BALLINA FLOOD AND PROTECTION FEASIBILITY PLAN

Seeking Community Feedback

Existing and future flood risks in Ballina and the surrounding floodplain are a consistent theme for the lives of Ballina Island and West Ballina residents. Ballina Shire Council is seeking feedback on a recently developed plan to help mitigate existing and future flood risks.

Due to our proximity to the coast, high tides pose a flood threat particularly when combined with floodwater from heavy rain. In the future, sea level rise due to climate change will result in more serious flooding. This means it is important to plan for future possible events. Council undertook flood investigations and developed the Ballina Flood Study in 2008 and the Ballina Floodplain Risk Management Study in 2012. From these documents the Ballina Floodplain Risk Management Plan (2015) was developed to help Council, emergency services and the community understand the potential for flooding in Ballina Shire. More recently the Draft Ballina Flood and Projection Feasibility Plan has been drafted and the Council is now seeking community feedback on this document.
