The families of those killed so senselessly deserve answers.” Obama also said America owed a great debt to law enforcement services, including the Boston and Massachusetts police forces and the FBI, which tracked down the perpetrators of Monday’s attacks. “These men and women get up every day, they put on that uniform, they risk their lives to keep us safe, and as this week showed, they don’t always know what to expect,” the added. The president came to the podium in the White House press briefing room shortly after law enforcement services captured suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, alive in the Watertown suburb of Boston. Obama, who watched the end of the huge manhunt in Boston on television in the White House residence, also remembered the three people killed when twin blasts took place near the finish line of the famed Boston marathon on Monday. “One thing we do know is that whatever hateful agenda drove these men to such heinous acts will not, cannot prevail,” he said. “Whatever they thought they could ultimately achieve, they’ve already failed. They failed because the people of Boston refused to be intimidated. They failed because as Americans, we refuse to be terrorized.” annual exercise between our countries. It’s a representation of our treaty and our alliance,” Goldbeck stressed. He added that the annual military and humanitarian exercise is the U.S.’ commitment to the Filipino nation. “We stand with you, by your side through national disasters and common threats such as transnational terrorism. It’s part of our shared oneness as two countries, but as people together in democratic values,” he pointed out. Although there have been no reports of any Filipino casualties, the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. is coordinating with federal authorities in connection with the incident to ensure that all Filipino nationals in Boston are safe and accounted for. IMMIGRATION BILL F 1 ROM PAGE

The provision of the bill in question, S. 744, would allow the parents of U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents to request a waiver from the Secretary of Homeland Security to allow them to apply for legal residency. Applicants would need to meet all requirements, which include not having a felony conviction. Those who qualify would be classified as Registered Provisional Immigrants (RPI) with a right to travel and work in the United States. After 10 years, they would then be given a chance to apply for a green card. The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act would also allow DREAMers – undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children – who have been deported a chance to reenter the United States with RPI status. To ensure that there are no Filipinos affected by the incident, the Consulate General in New York dispatched a consular officer to Boston today to meet with authorities and members of the FilipinoAmerican Community. The consular officer is ready to extend any assistance that Filipino nationals there may require. In light of this incident, the Filipino Community in the United States is advised to continue monitoring developments and to observe the usual caution when attending or going to large, public gatherings. immigrants a chance to return to the country legally, the law is still very narrow, explained Claire Bergeron, a research assistant at the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) a non-partisan immigration think tank based in Washington, D.C. “It will be limited to people that were not deported for a criminal reason,” said Bergeron. “What kind of criminal convictions will bar you will depend on regulations issued by DHS (Department of Homeland Security).” In Arizona, this particular aspect of the proposed bill is of special interest because the state has carried out large numbers of deportations resulting from state laws like SB 1070 and heavy-handed enforcement tactics such as immigration sweeps of neighborhoods and businesses in places like Maricopa County. During 2010, the year SB 1070 became made it a crime to be an undocumented immigrant in Arizona, more than 92,000 people were deported from Arizona, accounting for about one quarter of deportations nationwide.
