RUGBY UNION

The Bali Rugby Club travelled to Jakarta for the annual Jakarta 10’s tournament on May 5th with a large squad of 19 players that included 9 junior players. The first 4 games consist of pool games in order to set each teams’ position for the playoffs for silverware in the afternoon. With 2 close losses, a draw and a win; Bali Rugby was positioned in the Bowl playoff (below the top 8 teams). The following games were where the Bali team started to hit its straps with a comfortable win 12-0 over the Cendrawasih Highlanders from Papua and finally a Bowl semi-final against the Flying Kukri’s (Gurkhas) from Brunei. In this game the young Bali junior players really held their own against the servicemen of the Gurkhas team. An early try by the Kukris was converted and with the score at 7-0 the Bali team threw everything at the men in green in an effort to make it to the Bowl final. A gallant extra time try attempt by young outside back Scott Atkinson was waved away by the referee and left the Bali team a little deflated but proud of their efforts for the day. The Flying Kukri’s played against the Jakarta Bantengs in the Bowl final and was narrowly beaten by the local boys of the Bantengs team. Overall the tournament was won by the Singapore Wanderers who defeated the Polytechnic Shah Alam team from Malaysia. For the Bali team, Christopher Dharma was recognised for his on field and off field efforts and was rewarded with a new pair of rugby boots, while Markus Ria was selected as players player and was rewarded with three nights stay that was donated by Bali Rugby supporter the Pullman Hotel Legian. Finally, congratulations to the following Bali team players who due to their on-field efforts at the previous Bali hub game held at the Canggu Club and at the Jakarta 10’s were selected for the Indonesian national team’s training squad, the Rhinos; who will face Guam in Kuala Lumpur on June 5: BannyParasutha, Nick Mesritz, Dan Sivess, Markus Ria and Scott CRICKET HATTEN WINES BALI CRICKET LEAGUE The first two rounds of the Super 8s competition has seen Hatten Tigers in front as the only undefeated team having won both of their opening matches. In the first match on 12th May Hatten Tigers won the toss and decided to bat first. Led by veteran Soni Hawoe, who opened

the innings, they scored 6 for 89 in their allotted 15 overs. This didn’t appear to be enough but some early wickets saw Udayana crumble to be bowled out for 44 in reply, well short of their target. In the second match Lovina was declared the winner when Sanur did not have sufficient players to take the field. The second round on 19th May saw Udayana score a huge total of 2 for 156 with their captain, Suda Arsa, and Kadel Gamantika compiling a great opening partnership of 141. Sanur batted very well to reach 5 for 138 when their overs were completed but the target proved to be too big to overcome. In the second match Hatten Tigers had an easy victory over a young Lovina team. SCORES: First Round; Hatten Tigers 6/89 – (Soni Hawoe 34, Urip Astawa 15, Suda Arsa 3/26) defeated Udayana 44 – (Kadek Gamantika 18, Kadek Suardika 3/21, Soni Hawoe 2/1) Lovina defeated Sanur by forfeit Second Round; Udayana 2/156 – (Suda Arsa 78, Kadek Gamantika 50 n.o., Amol Tekade 2/32) defeated Sanur 5/138 - (Rhana 47 n.o., Manoj Joshi 21, Wayan Agus 2/22, Surendra 2/23) Hatten Tigers 1/52 – (Urip Astawa 34 n.o., Ade Yadistriawan 1/13) defeated Lovina 50 - (Rian Heo 21, Kadek Suardika 3/13, Wayan Sariana 2/13) SOCCER

Bali Sports Foundation’s Under 14 soccer failed to retain the Singapore Cricket Club’s Soccer Six title they won for the last 2 years, however winning the Bowl competition over the weekend of 18/19 May in Singapore. It was however an experience of a lifetime, first time on a plane, first time on a train, first time playing on a smooth grass surface that these children will not forget. To help pay for this tour, this Saturday Bali Sports Foundation will host the Coaltrans Soccer Sixes at Hotel Grand Bali Beach with senior and veteran (35+) competitions.
