Frankenweenie After his pet dog is run over and killed by a motor car, a young boy, who is a bit of a science geek, brings it back to life using electricity. Just like in the 1931 horror classic movie ‘Frankenstein’! Although Tim Burton’s latest cartoon is made for the Disney organization, it is full of all of his usual off beat humor and imagery. The cartoon is a fabulous mix of puppetry and computer animation, as it pays an hilarious homage to the traditions of the horror genre. In a stroke of sheer genius, Burton shoots his cartoon in Black and White, which enhances his tribute to the Golden Years of Hollywood. Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino also pays homage to another movie genre, this one from Europe, in his latest black comedy. ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ was the name given to bloodsplattered Italian imitations of American westerns, which became popular in the 1960s. They gained an international reputation and made stars of American actors such as Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood. The genre was typified by dramatic panning landscape shots contrasted with extreme close-ups. The tension would build slowly to moments of intense action, and, it was all accompanied by persuasive percussive music. In the films, the protagonists were always laconic wanderers who were deadly with a gun. Tarantino uses all of these clichés effectively, to tell a fascinating tale about two bounty hunters who are trying to rescue a woman enslaved by a brutal plantation owner. However, coming in at 2 hours and 45 minutes, Tarantino pushes his homage to its absolute limits. Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz star, but, look out for Franco Nero making a brief guest appearance. Nero played the original Django in a long series of successful Spaghetti Westerns. Hitchcock Recently, in the movie ‘The Girl’, the relationships famous director Alfred Hitchcock had with his leading ladies was examined. In particular, ‘The Girl’ looked at his relationship with Tippi Hedren, as they made ‘The Birds’ (1963) and ‘Marnie’ (1964) together. The movie was a revealing look into Hitchcock’s obsessions. Now, along comes another movie, simply entitled ‘Hitchcock’, which again delves into the director’s private life. This movie concentrates on the making of ‘Psycho’ (1960), and it depicts the important tasks Hitchcock’s wife had in the creation of all of his movies. Alma took an active part in the casting of his movies, plus script writing and pruning, and assisting in the cutting of all of the final edits of his movies. Her influence on his creativity, and his reliance on her judgment during their film-making process, has long been overlooked. This movie attempts to rectify the myth that Hitchcock did it all himself. Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren play the couple, and they bring a great amount of insight into their roles, but, the film does not really explore Hitchcock’s sexual fixations to any great extent. Dredd Set in an industrialized American future, where millions of people live in mega-cities, law and order is carried out by motorbike riding cops called ‘judges’. These cops have the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Judge Dredd, and his sidekick, has to storm a huge apartment building complex to capture the head of a drug manufacturing organization. Much mayhem and violence then takes place. Director Pete Travis makes a terrific action movie, which is relentless in its pace and dazzling with its production values. The drug in question is called ‘Slo-Mo’. It has the ability to slow down the perception of reality to a fraction of its normal speed. As you can imagine, this leads to some amazing photographic special effects. The Sessions A handicapped writer, well-played by John Hawkes, spends most of his life living in an iron lung, and, although he is capable of intercourse, he has never had a sexual experience. He hires a sex therapist to awaken and initiate

his sexuality. Through a series of six therapy sessions an emotional attachment develops between them, which the therapist is anxious to control. Writer, producer and director Ben Lewin handles this true story sensitively, while, Helen Hunt gives a superb performance as the therapist. Ms. Hunt also allows moments of full frontal nudity, so, be prepared to be shocked.

Lincoln In 1865, as the American Civil War approaches its end, President Abraham Lincoln wants to pass a constitutional amendment law which will forever ban slavery from the United States. However, for the passage of this bill, he needs a majority of congressmen to vote for it, so, he goes about lobbying the reluctant politicians. Steven Spielberg’s film is an incredibly spectacular production, but, it is also an incredibly boring history lesson. All we learn from this film is that the American politics of 150 years ago were just as corrupt then as they are now. Daniel Day-Lewis plays a determined Lincoln. The Paperboy A sexual melodrama set in America’s Deep South during the ‘Swinging Sixties’. This is the movie which contains the naughty scene on the beach between Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, which everybody is talking about. Confession of a Child of the Century In 1830 a young Parisian libertine treats an older woman not all that nicely.
