Term Three and Time to Get Moving….

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you! Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

with several successful and popular programs under her belt. Already chalking up ten years in the fitness industry in Australia and Jakarta, Nin brings an energetic and indomitable style to this term’s JSA program at The Canggu Club. Classes are open to all levels from novices to nifty hip hoppers and are divided into two age groups every Tuesday and Thursday with 7- 11 years from 4pm and 12 years and over from 5pm.

As we salute goodbye to the silly season and succumb to the reality of just how much we have indulged in over the holidays, the time has come to climb off the couch and claw our way forward to fitness goals for 2017. But it’s not just the big kids who need to make a healthy move. School holidays bring with them a host of tasty temptations for tots and teens and our children’s weekly sports schedules and fitness regimens tend to be tossed out with the wrapping paper! The new school term has just begun and so too has the Term 3 timetable for The Junior Sports Academy. Commencing on Monday January 16th through to March 25th, now’s the time to sign up for your son or daughter’s favourite sports. With eight different activities on offer, there is something to suit every taste from Trampolining and Teen Strength to Swimming or Soccer! A couple of newcomers to the lineup are worthy of mention…. Rugby returns this term with local island team, Bali Chillis donning the coaching cap and spearheading afternoon sessions. A

special introductory price from just Rp50k per session (based on advance term payment for CC members) means that young footy fans can learn how to play one of the world’s most watched sports without breaking mum and dad’s budget. Training is scheduled for Wednesdays at 4pm. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in tournaments involving visiting teams throughout the year. Excited to be introducing a new, dedicated dance program, JSA welcomes Hip Hop to the schedule for this term too! With a focus on Hip Hop alone, this course combines a variety of traditional and innovative urban dance styles including the latest routines and techniques from popular music videos and artists. Students will learn routines and step progression throughout the term to culminate in a live dance performance at the end of term party. Dance classes are dynamic and help to build balance, flexibility, coordination and fluidity of movement. New dance coach Nin is no stranger to teaching on the island

trove of trendy cafes, boutiques and barbershops! Travel just a few metres down the main drag and you’re sure to find cutting edge fashion and fabulous food, not to mention a funky new haircut. Shopaholics, foodies and fashionistas rejoice because Berawa is your new haven! Jalan Pantai Berawa, home to Happy Chappy’s Express, popular eatery Milk & Madu and a host of other hospitality houses, appears to be the epicentre of attention for the moment and that’s exactly where you’ll find Frockk Shop #4. Nestled among a cluster of newcomers to the area, Frockk’s enticing store window is dressed with their latest summer range, an elegant selection of signature

One of my faves for feminine fashion in Bali has just opened its fourth store in the island’s south. That’s right, in addition to their stores in Seminyak, Ubud & Batu Belig, Frockk now has a top new shop in the happening little hood of Berawa. For a number of years this enclave had remained the sleepy sister to hipster hot spot Batu Bolong, however in recent times the area has experienced somewhat of an awakening with this once quiet surfer hangout now harbouring a treasure

styles in loose linens, cool cottons and stunning silks. That’s the beauty about Frockk, you can be sure to find finely tailored attire fashioned from predominantly natural fabrics - ideal for Bali’s oppressive heat and humidity. Hand printed and dyed for originality in colour and design, Frockk fashion is exclusive to their label, meaning you’re less likely to come across your double donned in the same sundress down the street! Business is clearly booming and because there are now four

Teen Strength is back after it’s popular start in the Term 2 Schedule. A Cross Fit inspired workout, this provides an opportunity to train with Canggu Club’s very own regional Cross Fit athlete Zach. One of the most sought after and fittest trainers on the island, Zach will inspire budding young fitness aficionados to become the best they can be! Kids, if you are keen to increase strength, speed, agility and endurance as well as improving conditioning to better compete in other chosen sports, then Teen Strength is your top choice. Sign up for sports is on now with discounts for advanced payments available to those who book, pay and confirm attendance for a minimum of 8 weeks out of the term. Should you not wish to commit to a full term schedule, drop in rates apply and Canggu Club members are also entitled to a discounted rate for every session. JSA sports are open to everyone including non Canggu Club members. For a detailed explanation of this term’s schedule, fees and conditions, go to the website at www.jsabali.com. The New year is well under way and it’s time to kickstart family fitness for 2017.

stores you’ll have no difficulties in acquiring your size in the style you desire and if a little adjustment is at all necessary, they’ll happily arrange alterations to ensure the perfect fit. It’s one of those stores you just feel compelled to pop into quite regularly as new stock is appearing on the racks all of the time and they even offer a VIP Program to valued regular customers. In addition to their divine collection of skirts, shorts, shirts and summery dresses, Frockk offers a selection of must-havehomewares to decorate your bedroom, living or lounge with the latest range of cotton or canvas clad cushions and bed cover sets. Or, add a bit of edge to your own outfit with a bauble, bag or bangle from Frockk’s range of stylish accessories. A tasseled leather wallet completes the look then select a soft cotton scarf for a little extra flair and sun protection when you’re riding your sepeda motor sweetie! Frockk stores in Ubud, Seminyak and Berawa are open seven days from 10 - 8pm or you could take a peek at their Batu Belig Discount Store for savings of up to 50% off end of the line styles and samples. The outlet store is open Monday through Saturday from 11am until 5pm and now that the road works are finally complete, access is easy! Ladies if you are looking for original designs with flattering cuts in fabrics that offer an easy answer to surviving Bali’s summer bake, Frockk’s the spot. Gift vouchers are available in store for any fashion loving friends, but I can tell you, with new stock arriving on the racks all the time, I won’t be waiting until someone turns a year older before I’m back at Frockk because in this case, first in is definitely the best dressed! Check out the latest designs on their website: frockkclothing.com or visit their newest store on Jalan Pantai Berawa.

and a bucket of prawns…nom…nom…nom. If you’ve still got room for dessert, there will be a pavlova eating competition a little later in the avo, (though word has it the Aussies may have pinched the pav idea from the Kiwis across the ditch….Maaf!) Join in for the 20/20 cricket match from 3pm in the afternoon. It’s Australia Vs The Rest of The World but I’d warrant it’ll hardly be a question of origin when it comes time to don the pads and face the pitch. As well as this iconic Australia Day activity, there’s more in the entertainment line up than you can poke a stick at with AFL and NRL handball, thong throwing (that’s footwear not underwear thank you!), Slip ‘n Slide action, Ultimate Frisbee and of course, the Classic Catch competition. Classic Aussie Tunes will play throughout the day, the Australian Open is live in The Sports Bar and it’s Happy Hour prices all day. Hip, hip hooray!

Howzat! You can almost hear the sound of sizzling snags and smell the onions on the grill…….. The festive season long forgotten, Christmas trees are packed away and hangovers from New Year’s Day, a distant memory (thank goodness!) But don’t get down in the doldrums at the prospect of long working weeks with no sign of fun in sight. Canggu Club is getting ready to fire up the barbecue for their annual Australia Day Party on Sunday January 22nd. Nope, the Aussie’s haven’t changed the date of their national day but it’s much easier to celebrate on a Sunday, so they’ve

decided to start the party early! Join them from noon on January 22nd for an afternoon of everything Australian, Oi! Of course you don’t have to be from down under just to join the fun, but it might help to have an Antipodean acquaintance to help decipher some ‘Aussieisms’ on the day. The more the merrier and it’s no secret that Australians do love a party! There’ll be a swag of Aussie food specials to satisfy any yearnings for a little taste of home. Wrap your laughing gear around meat pies, sausage rolls, a lamington or two and of course it’s not ‘Straya Day without a sausage from the Barbie

The celebrations are provided as a free event for everyone to enjoy. Should non members wish to also enjoy the facilities of Splash Water Park they can do so for the usual Rp300K and Rp180K for adults and kids respectively, providing the chance to cool off after cricket! Celebrate everything Australian and much, much more with The Canggu Club on Sunday January 22nd and enjoy lots of laughs, a laid back lunch and no doubt be entertained by a larrikin or two. Bring your cozzies and your cricketing prowess and a huge appetite for fun! For further details, check out the Canggu Club website and go to “What’s On”. CANGGUCLUB.COM

Gently Born into a Turbulent World Being born is not a particularly safe or comfortable transition, especially in the developing world. Every mother and child that survive the first 42 days is a bit of a miracle. And the midwives who support them on that epic journey are humanity’s heroines. Although the two American women who met in Bali about 15 years ago were already mothers and interested in birthing, they had no intention of becoming midwives themselves. But Robin Lim and Brenda Ritchmond became passionate birth keepers; in time, both become licensed midwives and continue to open clinics where women can experience a safe and dignified birth. “There’s a culture of unkindness associated with childbirth in Indonesia,” Robin told me. “It’s not unusual for women to be verbally abused and even slapped during labour.”

Brenda, Robin and the many Indonesian midwives with whom they work closely, believe that access to quality health care and to kind, hygienic, culturally appropriate natural childbirth is a human right. They call the practice Gentle Birth. They also strongly endorse breastfeeding; an infant in Indonesia who is fed formula is 300 times more likely to die in the first year of life than a breastfed baby. Although Indonesia’s domestic economy is strong, the benefits are not trickling down to millions of pregnant women living below the poverty line. In fact in the past few years maternal and infant mortality rates have actually increased, even here in Bali. According to IBI, the Indonesian Midwives Association, the maternal mortality rate is 359 per 100,000 mothers. Infant mortality is officially 23.5 per 1,000 live births, but may be higher because for religious and cultural reasons babies who die under 42 days old are not always reported. Why the high numbers? Poor pregnant women don’t have economic access to good medical care and are usually malnourished. About 80% are anemic. This leads to complications during delivery; most maternal deaths are due to hemorrhage following childbirth. In 2003 Robin first invited Brenda to assist with a birth. For a year or so they delivered babies at Brenda’s home in Nyuh Kuning near Ubud, using her family car as the ambulance and her kitchens (she owns Bali Buda) to feed the midwives and mothers. “Eventually we couldn’t handle the number of births on our own.,” Brenda explained. “We built the original Bumi Sehat Clinic and became a formal NGO. In September 2004 we had our first water birth at Bumi Sehat Clinic, and I continued

to apprentice with Robin for the next five years.” Brenda, an Indonesian citizen, took a four year degree in midwifery in Java. She now has an Indonesian Midwifery License to practice, and may be the only foreigner to obtain one. In May 2008 Brenda started a small pre-natal consultation clinic in Denpasar with an organization called Dompet Sosial Madani. That tiny initiative grew into present day Rumah Sehat Madani (RSM) located in West Denpasar, now a financially sustainable NGO. “We ‘retrain’ midwives that come to work for us and support them in opening their own clinics after they are comfortable with Gentle Birth practices. In this way Gentle Birth spreads into the population and makes the biggest impact, in my opinion.” In Nyuh Kuning, Bumi Sehat continued to grow. Besides providing medical care, Gentle Birth support and educational programs in Bali, since 2005 Bumi Sehat has been actively engaged in providing basic health care and birthing assistance in disaster areas. Being nine months pregnant is no joke anywhere, but after a natural disaster which may have wiped out home, family, community and any level of medical care, a pregnant woman is almost unimaginably vulnerable. Bumi Sehat’s first natural disaster was the massive earthquake and tsunami which struck Aceh in December 2004. In early January with support from IDEP Robin, her husband and five of her children set out for Samatiga, a village deep in the tsunami zone which had been almost completely destroyed. Sleeping in tiny tents amid the chaos, they built a clinic of tarpaulins and bamboo and led a team that distributed food and medicine. Robin gathered surviving midwives to help the deeply traumatized local women give birth. About 18 months later, with the support of IDEP and Ubud Rotary Club, the temporary clinic was replaced by a full service permanent clinic which still offers general health and childbirth support 12 years after the disaster.

These two remarkable women continue to spread the culture of escorting new lives gently and with dignity into this sometimes unkind world The experience of providing basic medical and birthing support in a disaster zone led Robin and the Bumi Sehat team to Jogjakarta in 2006 and Padang in 2008 following big earthquakes there. In 2010 Robin was invited to Haiti to set up a reproductive health clinic in the disaster zone. In 2013 the team went to Bohol in the Philippines after a major earthquake (soon followed by super typhoon Yolanda) and established a clinic at Dulag on Leyte Island which is still operating. The next disaster was the Nepal earthquake in 2015. In all of these journeys Robin worked with Direct Relief International and other NGOs. Everywhere Bumi Sehat provided a safe, hygienic environment where women could experience a natural, dignified birth in the midst of chaos. Robin was awarded the CNN Hero of the Year award in 2011, which provided about a third of the funding needed to build a bigger Bumi Sehat clinic when the land contract for the original one expired, with the balance of the money coming from donations and Rotary International. This year land will be provided on the island of Palawan in the Philippines to

build a birthing centre for surrounding islands. And recently a Japanese man has donated funds to open a clinic in Jayapura, Papua, on land donated by a church. So Bumi Sehat will be expanding from its three clinics in Bali, Sumatra and Dulag, to five this year. Robin Lim is one busy woman, and usually a tired one. She raises funds for the operating costs of the clinics and teaches about 13,000 doctors, nurses and midwives a year in Indonesia, the Philippines and Europe. Her popular classes in Indonesia are raising not just the technical skills but the status of midwives and also teaching them to practice medicine with kindness. And she still delivers babies. Brenda’s initiatives continue to grow on a more local scale. With Rumah Sehat Madani running well, original team members are planning a new project in Singapadu. Bali Kania Waras (Healthy Woman) will be a birthing clinic with nine beds, family accommodation, a playground and educational centre focusing on pre-natal education. The new clinic will be both financially and environmentally sustainable - still fairly radical concepts here. Brenda explained, “We’ll work with private clients and those on the national health care system, and will subsidize local women when necessary.” Her business Bali Buda has quietly supported the development of all three clinics since 2003, both financially and with food. “In the early days when Bumi Sehat was beginning I donated significant time to the clinic which should probably have gone to the business, but now both are strong.” These two remarkable women continue to spread the culture of escorting new lives gently and with dignity into this sometimes unkind world. Please support them in their important work. Bumi Sehat always needs donations for operating costs; tax deductible donations can be made through the website www.bumisehatfoundation.org. Bali Kania Waras seeks a major donor for construction costs. djasanda@yahoo.com.

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

What is the role of animals in ceremonies and ritual in Bali? Animals, dead or alive, are an essential part of any ceremony in Bali. Unlike their Hindu counterparts in India, very few Balinese Hindus are vegetarian or vegan, and animal products are on the menu at all ceremonies. Meat includes chicken, duck and goat, as well as pig’s blood if red lawar is served. Preparation of animals for slaughter, the slaughter process and the cooking is all the men’s duty. Once an animal has been selected to be on the menu, it is brought to the ceremony location and slaughtered outdoors, normally by the roadside (so the blood washes into the gutter). Animals are not slaughtered according to what we would standard slaughter procedures and not in a halal manner (especially since pigs are a favourite in Balinese cooking). Balinese have a penchant for suckling pig (babi guling) as well as pig entrails (urutan). Offerings for smaller ceremonies (coming of age rituals, such as tooth filings and three- or six-month ceremonies for babies, as well as weddings) always include cooked meat such as chicken and duck. At temple ceremonies, sacrifices of smaller animals such as ducks, chickens, roosters and baby chickens are necessary to complete certain rituals that include offerings to the underworld. You will see the animals tied up or held in small bamboo cages for hours, sometimes days on end “waiting their turn” to be ritually sacrificed. They are presented to the underworld and the lay priest officiating the ceremony will break the neck of the small animals, such as a chick, as he completes his mantras. Tabuh Rah is the name of the ritual spilling of animal blood for cleansing rituals (mecaru). Cockfighting is one way to achieve this, and it is also an opportunity for gambling (illegal in Indonesia except for religious purposes). Here roosters that have certain coloured feathers must fight each other, donning razor sharp spurs. Fights last only a few minutes, and are normally to the death. Severely injured roosters are killed on the spot by their owners. The blood from the fight is then used in a ritual to appease evil spirits. There is certainly a lot to write about when it comes to animals and Balinese religious traditions. More next issue.

Say What? Question: There is a new bloke in my life. We met traveling. Because we have only known each other for about a month, it’s hard to know much about him other than what he tells me. Along with trusting that, I am being impatient as everything is going really slowly, which is totally new for me. My last boyfriend of 7 years ago moved in with me after the first month, and we were sleeping together by the end of the first week. I’m not saying that going slowly isn’t the best thing ever, it’s just unusual for me, and my head is getting in the way. (“Maybe he doesn’t desire me? Maybe he likes me only as a friend? Maybe I repulse him on some level? Why isn’t he hitting on me?”) In other respects, it’s all been quite full on. We’ve slept together (literally), we’ve held and kissed and touched, and it’s all been quite lovely; but nothing has progressed below the neck. He’s told me that he’s into D/s (Dominance and submission), and that he’s the “s.” I’ve been strictly “vanilla” in my past relationships; but I’m game and actually quite excited to explore this if he’s interested in helping me along. In the context of our currently super-chaste relationship, however, I don’t know what to do. The old me would drink a bottle of wine and attempt to seduce him. The new me doesn’t want to get drunk, hit on him, or risk scaring him off. How do I stop over-thinking this and decide instead what to do? Dr. ZZ: From the sounds of it, this bloke is something of an old-fashioned gentleman who wants to get to know you before committing to a sexual relationship. If anything, this is a more “normal” pace than your previous relationship; it’s not all that slow, just not blindingly fast. It’s also likely that he’s likes you more than just as a friend and is not repulsed in any way. It’s also possible that he’s waiting for you to make the first move and is surprised at your slow pace. Unfortunately, our current society’s idea of “sexiness” is based in spontaneity, ambiguous communication, and the idea that sex is supposed to just happen. You mention “seducing” and “hitting on him.” How about “asking” instead?

going back to the lonely people with invites of one kind or another and leave it at two or so attempts before moving on from the socially active ones. What’s your take on how to best handle flaky people you are attempting to friend? Kinksters are used to this; they call it “negotiation.” Negotiation can’t be done entirely with sexiness and seduction; at some point, you need to just say what you’re thinking. (“Hey, I would like to sleep with you - as in sleep with you – and I’d like to try this D/s stuff you like. How do you feel about that?”) If he’s game, tell him where you’re at with having never done it before and your wanting him to tell you what kind of behaviors he likes. Then, before taking on anything too hardcore, make your first play session short and not too intense, and talk afterwards about how it went, and what you each liked and didn’t like. This is not “seduction”; it’s putting attention on the elephant in the room and getting yourself out of the awkward position of spending the night in bed with someone never knowing if this time it’s going to suddenly turn into sex. Question: I am a 28-year-old expat with many acquaintances in Bali from various parts of the world. As I attempt to build a circle of friends, however, I begin to realize that a lot of the people I know are flaky; they break plans and don’t respond to emails, etc.. In my own experience, I generally act like this either when I’m depressed and avoiding social commitments, or when I’m just not prioritizing the other person for some reason. For a fact, I know that a few of these potential friends are lonely and isolated; others have vibrant social lives. I keep

Dr. ZZ: We live in a non-committal age in which people tend to honor more and more their own personal freedom over the convenience or consideration of others. People speak of “sort of” liking something or “sort of” wanting to do something “sometime,” while accepting open-ended invitations with replies like “totally,” “definitely,” or “for sure.” It’s a world of political correctness. Heaven forbid you should hurt the other person’s feelings by delivering an honest no! This generates a lot of over-promising, underdelivering, and outright avoidance of making or confirming concrete plans which require cancellation or follow-through. You’re doing the absolutely right thing by not pushing busy people and by giving introverts several chances to come through. One way you may want to improve your approach is to take the lead in finding fun events you want to attend and then asking potential friends to join you for a specific activity at a definite time and place. (ex., the 9:30 AM class next Friday at the Yoga Barn). Otherwise, simply head off to events and activities that don’t require the company of another person for you to enjoy yourself, and let the Universe unfold as it will. Assume that “sure, maybe” means “no.” At least you won’t be waiting by the phone for them to make plans with you, and it will help you have a fun social life while you get out and do things in Bali. Strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet. Enjoy your own company, and you will never suffer from lack of quality companionship.

Restaurant & Food Update

Gerry William For more information see our website: www.balieats.com

Grow brings the talents of Singapore based English chef Ryan Clift to Bali. He is well known for his popular Tippling Club in Singapore, which works magic with local ingredients only. Ryan is doing the same in Bali. GROW has taken over the mezzanine restaurant Lola at L Hotel on Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan, which after re-modeling now has a street level terrace entrance. Over the years I have looked at many hundreds of restaurant menus in Bali. Sadly, within any one cuisine style, almost all are ‘sama-sama’! So often they are just straight copies of each other, often without fully understanding their complexity, which contributes to so many local failures. So when I see a menu that excites with its individuality, and prospective tastes, I can not wait to try. GROW has one of the most innovative menus I have seen for years. Start with a classic Steak Tartar, or be adventurous? Many places have Pan-seared Scallops on their menu but none with toasted corn, corn purée, basil jelly and curried popcorn. Crab Meat sounds familiar, but not with granny smith apple, lemon and pea purée, mint vinegar infused baby gem lettuce and wild pea shoots. A bit of French: Potato Confit with pickled shallots, parsley purée and a watercress salad or Rillettes of Duck Confit and Cashews with pickled local veg, lime, and coriander brioche. The Mains continue in the same vein; Beef Cheek, braised for 48 hours with beetroot infused quinoa, roasted baby beets and wild pea shoots, Pan-fried Grouper with pea and green curry purée, compressed celery, puffed wild rice and a tom kha emulsion. Even the desserts are different; how about a Basil & Lemon Tart [pictured], with crispy basil shortbread and fresh vanilla ice cream. GROW is certain to be one of the dining stars of 2017!

Bebek d’Ubud has arrived in the sleepy wood-carving [dolphin] hamlet of Tenkulak, a few kilometers south-east of Ubud, just east of Mas. It is a major complex comprising a double level building, large separate thatch roofed wantilan and many private Bale, with lesehan seating, jutting out over what will eventually be lotus ponds. The offerings are pure Balinese, some with a few short cuts [betutu grilled in the kitchen not steamed underground]. Gurame and Udang are offered every which way. Their specialty of Duck can be deep-fried, crispy or marinated before grilling. All time favourite Ayam Panggang Sambal Matah [half bird flattened before grilling served with raw shallot and chilli sambal] is on the menu as is Ayam Bakar Madu [grilled chicken with honey sauce]. Pork Ribs can be Saus BBQ [with BBQ sauce], Mekuah [in rich pork gravy] or Kecap [sweet soy]. There is a Seafood Curry, served in a half coconut, and many vegetarian dishes; Pumpkin Leaves with onion and garlic, Water Spinach, Gondo with grated coconut and lime or Bean Sprouts with garlic. Unlike most Ubud restaurants this one has a large parking area. The complex is spacious and relaxing, the staff all local and friendly. Jig U Jigu is the strangest named restaurant for a long time. Located at Taman Joglo on The ByPass Ngurah Rai, central Sanur, it is a restaurant in a Joglo, and offers a mix of Chinese and Indonesian cuisines at very cheap prices. Dim Sum for brunch can be steamed SioMay [stuffed with chicken, prawn, crab, quail egg or seaweed] or a range of deep-fried dumplings, strangely even including some Indian Samosas. There are many different styles of Rice dishes [Javanese, Hong Kong] and Noodles [bihun, kwetiau] with gurami, prawns, squid, fish, crab, clams or lobster. Gindara fish is one of the specialties, either as a main or in a soup. Only open a few months but already steadily busy, not surprising when you see the prices; Pakets from as low as Rp.35,000 [vegetarian ones @ Rp.25,000]. Even the most expensive Paket @ Rp.75,000 is great value [rice with grilled fish, clams, prawns, squid sate, plecing and sambal]. It is a pleasant space, air-con and non-smoking inside. Smoking is possible on the front garden terrace.

Opia is a new fine dining restaurant perched high up on the ridge at Jimbaran, with views over Bali. Executive Chef is the well-traveled talented Italian-Australian Nicolas Lazzaroni who made his mark in Bali as the opening chef at Ubud’s International Bridges restaurant, filling it virtually overnight. He then opened Como Shambhala’s Uma Cucina with fine Italian cuisine followed by more of the same at Settimo Cielo in Kerobokan. At OPIA the cuisine is modern Asian, many of the dishes being pure creations of the chef. Like most great chefs he has that unique ability to take simple ingredients and make them taste special! The large menu tempts the taste buds and makes it difficult to choose what to eat. Start with a salad of Shaved Cuttlefish, finely balanced with a dressing of tamarind, mint and coriander, or Pandan Parcels of spiced minced chicken. A Sate with a difference is one of marinated Beef Tongue coated with a coconut crust. Pot Stickers may have originated in the USA but these are pure Asian stuffed with roasted pumpkin and lamb. Amongst the mains Beef Ribs are barbecued with Sumatran rendang spices, Roasted Quail is infused with orange and star anise. There is Beef Cheek Massaman or a Jungle Curry of Red Snapper. Finish your Asian journey with a Sweet Corn & Kaffir Lime Baked Custard. Drunken Monkey is also found on the middle section of The ByPass Ngurah Rai, Sanur. It is located where Warung Korea used to be and offers a range of interesting Asian dishes, mainly Thai with a sprinkling of Chinese, Singaporean, Vietnamese and a couple of Korean from the previous menu. This time around a very professional approach has been taken, no doubt due to the influence of the new connection with the Ryoshi Group. Inside is two spacious dining areas, the main one is air-con and non-smoking, whilst at the higher level it is smoking and yet again with air-con. Two different menus are in use for lunch and dinner but many dishes are on both. Start with that refreshing Thai salad Som Tum; shredded green papaya with a touch of chilli. Yam Woo Sen is an unusual slightly sour seafood salad with glass noodles. Mains include my favourite Kra Pao [minced chicken with basil] and interesting alternatives such as Braised Pork Shank done Chinese style in 5 spices, served with duck egg and bok choy. Singapore’s popular Hainain Chicken is available as is the Vietnamese Pho Bo or Korea’s Japjae, fried sweet potato noodles with beef. With very budget prices, and smiling professional staff, Drunken Monkey is a sure winner! C/R/G-18 Jan 17

19 HOW CHARGES CAN DAMAGE YOUR INVESTMENT RETURNS

CV. BAYU SANTERO IMMIGRATION SERVICES License No. 043/22-08/PM/I/2003

Our Services: Have you ever wondered when stock markets appear to be riding high why your own investments are not keeping pace with them or when they are falling why your investments are falling even faster? The reason could be that you are not in the right asset classes at that point in time. If you have been investing mainly in the US stock markets for the past couple of years you should be doing very nicely, but if your money was in emerging markets or commodities you would probably be showing a significant loss. But stick to your guns; asset classes move in cycles. But even if you had been fortunate to pick the right market at the right time it is unlikely your investment will mirror the performance of the markets. The closest you can get is by buying ‘index funds’ or ETF’s (Exchange Traded Funds) which invest directly in the basket of shares that make up the respective index. But you still have to face fees to cover brokerage, management, custodian and other costs. So if you are going to be faced with fees anyway, why bother with index funds when for an additional charge you can select actively managed funds and enjoy a higher return? One good reason is that actively managed funds often underperform the indexes. There are good arguments both for and against active or passive, but investing in an index fund does help to lower the charges. A wise approach is to have a mix of ‘active’ and ‘passive’ funds. But people do not usually buy funds directly Indeed, most expat investors will buy their funds through one of the international life companies or similar ‘platforms’. From a practical point of view it makes sense because you need to make just a single application to one of the financial institutions and it will then invest in a selection of funds on your behalf. To invest directly with fund houses you would need to go through a lengthy application process, prove your identity, your residential address, your tax residency and source of funds with each one as part of their strict anti-money laundering requirements. If you live in Indonesia there may be additional requirements as Indonesia is listed as a ‘Category 3’ country where applicants attract closer scrutiny. Just proving your address alone in Bali can be a nightmare as many have found. If you have to go through this process to buy a single fund you can imagine the hassle if you want to buy from a dozen fund houses. You would probably have to give up your day job to keep up with the paperwork. No wonder then that people prefer to go through the process just once and let the life companies or investment platforms handle the paperwork to buy and sell the funds. But using life companies comes at a cost There is no question that the big life companies have provided a valuable and essential service to millions of investors around the world. So what is the problem now? Several decades ago investors often enjoyed double digit returns annually. Investment projections would regularly quote 12% as the upper annual return estimate. Investors hardly noticed the charges being taken out of their profits. But since the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 returns have shrunk, yet charges have never been reduced so their impact is now much greater on overall performance. The impact is felt even more by smaller investors who don’t benefit from the higher allocations given to larger investors. Indeed the difference is such that I have to advise small savers that their money is best kept in the bank, even at zero interest. This is because a typical life company will charge an extra 5% on units purchased if the monthly saving is less than US$500. Larger investors who can save say US$2,000 a month will have no initial charge but will be given an extra allocation of units with each premium paid. But even at the higher level a loss would be incurred if

the underlying funds gave a zero return. Success is still conditional on maintaining the plan in full. Early surrender or a reduction in premium can incur heavy charges. This is where many people lose out, especially after a period of poor performance. The penalties involved by early surrender mean taking a double hit. Patience is essential with long term investing if you want to avoid unwelcome charges. Portfolio Bonds – now an expensive option For decades, portfolio bonds have been the most convenient and efficient means of access to a universe of thousands of funds as well as a means of buying stocks and bonds without going through a long buying and selling process. To buy or sell funds you or your adviser simply complete a dealing sheet and fax or e-mail it to the life company. Valuations can be viewed online 24/7 via the life company or intermediary’s website. All very convenient.

The charges are quite high however and once again that was not a problem during the years of high returns. But that has changed, particularly since the 2008 crisis and investors now struggle to even cover the charges, many of which are ‘hidden’ such as bank and foreign exchange charges and custodian fees. This is particularly so in the case of ‘small’ portfolios of say under $100,000 since the impact of a fixed annual administration charge of around $500 on top of annual charges represents a much higher percentage than is the case in a million dollar portfolio. However, there are now some good alternatives such as ‘mini-bonds’ which offer fixed menus of 200 or more funds covering all the main asset classes, but at a much lower cost than an open architecture portfolio bond. Also, more cost-effective non-life company platforms are now moving in with much lower charges, yet allow the same access to thousands of funds. At least one of them is offering incentives to transfer from existing bonds and benefit immediately from lower charges.

C/BT/G-9 Nov. 16

Many fail to realise that if they take a partial withdrawal their charges are still based on the original investment. In such a situation, provided the bond has been running a number of years and is free from surrender charges it may be cheaper to bale out or switch to a non-life platform. The need to act can be even more pressing if your portfolio holds suspended funds as you will still be paying full charges, even on a fund which may be worthless. As I see it, the life companies still offer good products with their mini-bonds, savings plans and life insurance but the old portfolio bonds are now way too expensive. Apart from the above, how else can we reduce charges? If you are paying credit card charges to fund a regular savings plan you may find it is possible to switch to a bank that offers a Debit Card with no charge.

C/BT/I-04 Jan 17

As a rule of thumb, the larger your investment or savings plan, the lower the charges in percentage terms and these charges usually reduce also as the years go on. But the environment is not easy for small investors. Things may improve as interest rates rise and inflation returns. That’s when no-one should be out of the markets!

Departures by Nh. Dini Departures opens on a wrenching scene at Jakarta’s old Kemayoran Airport as Dutch evacuees pass through immigration. Employees of recently nationalized Dutch firms, plantations and factories were pouring out of the country. On their taut and worried faces was reflected the same kind of fear that I saw on the unforgettable faces of Chinese families crammed into Kota’s immigration hall during the riots of 1998. Evacuees included those who’ve worked in Indonesia for a short while and those whose families have lived here for generations. Elisa Frissart was among those choosing to remain behind. She was saying goodbye to her DutchEurasian family who was leaving for Holland. Elisa’s family decided to leave even though they were dark-skinned, spoke Indonesian, were Indonesian citizens and felt Indonesian. Elisa had left home four years earlier, seeking refuge from the unrelenting emotional abuse she suffered under her jealous mother. The family home felt like a prison, so she moved to a low-cost boarding house when she was only 17. Elisa was the only Eurasian in the hostel in the Jakarta suburb of Rajawali. One couldn’t tell from her skin or her face that she was mixed race, except for perhaps her “sharp nose.” It upset her to be treated different. “She’s Elisa, the Indo.” her housemates would say to visitors. The issues surrounding race are unflinchingly examined in this novel in which racism and sexism combine to limit the main character’s desire for selfexpression and fulfillment. Working for the new Garuda Indonesian Airlines, Elisa is determined to establish her independence and find a place where she feels like she belongs. She decides to throw in her lot with the young republic and identify fully as an Indonesian. She chose the pure Indonesian form of her name, dropping the diminutive Dutch ye as in Elsye. With the support of only two of her Indonesian housemates, Elisa learns what it means to be a young woman finding her way in the troubled early years after Indonesia’s independence. She sought out the company of Javanese crew and staff so she could become more Indonesian. Her only true friend, who accepts her for who she was, is worldly, bookish, straighttalking Lansih in Garuda’s Flights Department. At the time the atmosphere was tense in the capital where a minority of the population still identified with the colonizers and openly preferred using the Dutch language. But a feeling of ill will was directed at Indos speaking Dutch or who had foreign-sounding names even though their complexion was as dark as the natives. Some local shops and even pedicab drivers refused to serve them. People yelled “Dutch dogs!” at them on the street. Increasingly, lighter-skinned people were afraid of going out alone at night. With a dysfunctional family background and almost no knowledge of her ancestry, 21-year-old Elisa searches for her true identity. Finding her real father proves a heartbreaking ordeal and she encounters frustration with her various Indonesian suitors. She finds the prospect of marriage to the handsome Javanese, Sukoharjito with whom she has fallen deeply in love, may give her the sense of belonging and the stability she yearns for. Her brushes with romance and the stirrings of sexual arousal with Sukoharjito are about as racy as this novel gets, adhering as it must to the literary convention of the times. There’s a little too much attention in the book devoted to the oh-so-delicate micro aggressions, slights in friendships, demure Javanese-style courtships, niceties of mannerisms, parties and dates, church-going and co-habiting issues within the small circle of friends. I yearned for riot, murder, betrayal, infidelity – anything exciting. The story only gets interesting again when Elisa starts uncovering her family’s enigmatic and scandalous history in Surabaya, her mother’s carefree sexuality, doubts about her biological father and the lonely time she spent in an orphanage in Batavia during the Japanese occupation.

Nh. Dini’s writing style is unemotional on the surface, but raw feelings are stirring below that reveal themselves in a melodramatic bedside reunion with an adopted uncle and overwrought anguish when her boyfriend leaves her for another woman. She distances herself from the politics of the period, as if it is not her place to comment. NC/Ns/G - 27 July 11

Her disinterested observations make it seem that those turbulent times were uneventful. She presents a picture of normalcy. No opinions are expressed. A realistic eyewitness account of what it was like to live in a country where a resurrection in Sulawesi, military operations against rebels in West Sumatra, the downing of an American spy plane over Ambon, a national economy in crisis and Sukarno’s mass expulsion of Dutch citizens were taking place would’ve been an invaluable historical record. But we must bear in mind that Dini’s story of a young independent woman making her feelings known about the prejudices and discrimination she felt was daring for the period. Elisa had to constantly fight against the belief that Eurasian girls were free and easy as well as many other subtle ways that she felt frustrated at not being accepted by other Indonesians as one of their own.

C/NV/U-25 May 16

The author trained as a Garuda flight attendant, known in the parlance of the mid-1950s as an “air hostesses.” It was the time of telexes, Dakota airplanes and smoking allowed in the passenger cabin. After its launch, the national airlines used aging aircraft purchased from KLM that were badly in need of repair with no Dutch mechanics and few spare parts. The government even commandeered Garuda planes to put down regional uprisings. We get the inside scoop on the duties and perceived social standing of a low-ranking airline employee. We learn what it’s like traveling with the presidential entourage and serving VIPs. Dini is particularly adept at describing tactile details of clothing, dialog, facial expressions and Garuda’s operational and bureaucratic procedures. In a rare you-are-there account by someone who has survived an air crash, Elisa tells of her plane’s engines losing power and plunging to earth in a swamp with water quickly filling the cabin. In this book I found the references to social and political unrest, anecdotes from the very early years Indonesia’s nascent airline industry, the searing portraits of Elisa’s unpleasant mother and of her best friend Lansih actually more intriguing than the well-behaved and conformist personality of the young Christian narrator. Nh. Dini was one of Indonesia’s earliest feminists, so she makes sure her female characters explore a wide range of life options. In Elisa’s case, jolted and admitting defeat, she finally decides to apply for an immigrant visa and join her family in Holland, turning her back on the country that ultimately would not accept her as one of their own.

Short History of the Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset Our club was founded in Ubud in 2008. Only 8 short years ago. Our Rotary Club focuses on Balinese schools, on health, hygiene, and water projects across Bali. Balinese children are in dire need of this help. Some schools in Bali have NO water. No water for even a toilet, much less for washing their hands or drinking. We try and find these schools and help them with these and other situations that make learning difficult. How do we do this? First we find schools, villages, etc. that need help. Friends, house keepers, even our local Rotaractors provide information of places in need. Then we travel to the site and speak to the elders there to find out what they need. We never go in and tell them what we will do. We work with them to try and solve problems. Then we turn the project idea into a detailed proposal. If our club passes this proposal, it can be funded by our club alone, with another club or clubs, or through a District Grant if it is a short term and not too expensive of a project. If it is valued at over US$30,000, we use a Global Grant proposal and find other international clubs to go in with us. Once we have the money required by any of these methods, we work again with the elders to schedule the work.

The Rotary club provides the technical knowledge and the supplies only. The local people provide all the labor. Sometimes this can be carrying heavy loads of pipe or cement many miles uphill into the mountains.

• We support our local Rotaract club to provide books, writing paper and pencils to schools that don’t have these things. They find the schools in need and deliver the books, etc.

Just a few of our projects include: • 16 successful water projects in North Bali bringing water to villages where previously their women had to walk 3+ hours to bring water to the village. No more. Now mothers and stay with their children. A doctor can visit the entire village. A teacher can come for all the children.

• A one year program to train students and staff of a high school plus the staff of adjacent warungs (local eateries) in recycling. Training, monitoring, bins and collection supplied by EcoBali Recycling. RCBUS sponsored two bins. Neighbors have sponsored other bins. How can you become involved with these great endeavors?

• Demonstrate sustainable dry land farming in NW Bali. You can start by contacting us to join a meeting. UFF17 welcomes the famed ‘Spice Sisters’, a Papuan jungle chef, the world’s foremost tempeh expert and the husband and wife duo behind Bangkok’s Bo.lan Returning for its third year this 12–14 May, the Ubud Food Festival (UFF) announced today a sneak peek of Indonesian and international chefs ahead of its full program launch in March, which will be infused with this year’s theme ‘Every flavor is a story’.

As Indonesia’s leading food festival, UFF brings together the archipelago’s most celebrated chefs, restaurateurs, producers, professional food enthusiasts and food lovers for a three-day culinary adventure with Indonesian food as the star.

Across the Kitchen Stage and – in a new addition to the program – a free cooking demonstration series conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, the Festival will play host to a Balinese culinary showdown with the return of ‘the Four Mades’ – Made Lugra (The Ayung Resort), Made Runatha (Moksa), Made Janur (Moksa) and Made Surjaya (The Standing Stones).

Joining the UFF17 will be Australia’s much-loved Tasia and Gracia Seger, the Indonesian-born ‘spice sisters’ who recently shot to fame after taking out the top spot in one of Australia’s fiercest culinary competition television series.

An opportunity for Indonesian chefs to connect with industry members from Southeast Asia and the world, the UFF will also welcome chefs Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones of Bangkok’s Bo.lan – currently no. 37 in S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The husband and wife duo will be collaborating with the Street Food Chef Will Meyrick to present a special event at his celebrated Hujan Locale restaurant.

The sisters will appear alongside other culinary icons including the world’s foremost tempeh expert, Professor Winarno, and raw food specialist Arif Springs, whose plantbased approach to nutrition is underpinning a growing health food movement across Indonesia.

Expanding into tasty new terrain, a feast of Fringe Events will bring an array of Asian flavors to some of Seminyak and Sanur’s most enticing dining destinations, in dynamic collaborations between international and local chefs in some of Bali’s most chic surrounds.

The Festival will also welcome Charles Toto, the Jungle Chef from Jayapura, Papua, who uses local ingredients from his fertile homelands to put a Papuan twist on well-known Western favorites.

Two venues playing host to Fringe Events are the recentlyunveiled Mejekawi – a tasting kitchen and laboratory concept by the culinary team behind KU DE TA; and Bikini – the latest addition to the Sisterfields empire fusing the urban flair of a

New York warehouse with the pulse of a Miami Beach party. After the Festival, spice sisters Tasia and Gracia will set sail for the the Komodo National Park and lesser Sunda Islands on a 7-day collaboration with SeaTrek Cruises, serving up a stunning selection of freshly-caught and sourced Indonesian cuisine alongside UFF Founder and Director Janet DeNeefe.

“This year, the Festival will be infused with the theme ‘Every flavor is a story’,” explains UFF Founder and Director, Janet DeNeefe. “The theme celebrates Indonesia’s culinary heritage, in which every ingredient, recipe and culinary tradition tells a story of the archipelago’s diverse history, geography and culture. “The theme also reflects on the journey from producer to plate; from forging relationships with local growers to fostering awareness of broader ecological and industry trends that are shaping Indonesia’s – and the world’s – culinary landscape.”

BALI’S BEST MASSAGES UBUD

After a 30 minute leisurely hike through the spectacular rice fields along the Campuhan ridge, we arrived at Karsa Spa and Kafé. Graced with large lotus ponds of pink blooming flowers and an abundance of swimming fish. An oasis surrounded by such natural beauty you can’t help appreciating and enjoying being there. Designed as being eco-friendly environment they only use Ayurvedic and organic oil blends in their treatments. We were booked for Intuitive Heart Massage for 90 minutes. They have eleven very skillful and experienced practitioners offering this treatment, all with Reiki Tummo certification. This isn’t an ordinary relaxing massage but much more therapeutic. They use Reiki, Shiatsu, Balinese, Lomi Lomi, Swedish and Deep tissue techniques plus their intuition to locate areas in your body which require healing. After being accompanied to a quaint room with a splashing wall of water and soothing music, I took a quick shower to rinse off the sweat from the walk and lay down ready to receive. I quickly discovered that Gusti is a man who I could surrender my body to, realizing that his intuitive fingers were able to find all of the knots of muscle and painful points that I didn’t even realize I had until he pressed them and released the pain. He zeroed in on an old shoulder problem and worked to release the joint. When the massage finished, WOW! Incredible! An amazing massage. I’m not that easily impressed, but I was with Gusti. The treatment culminated in a spice bath filled with aromatic herbs that turned the water ruby. It was so lovely I didn’t want to get out of the tub.

Amazing ambiance describes Ayusha Wellness Spa located on the scenic Campuhan River is like entering an enchanted forest. Surrounded by ancient trees with spectacular views of the lushness below. The sound of splashing water and singing birds is all the music needed here. All of the beautiful treatment rooms are open air overlooking the river. I was booked for their popular Balinese massage and coconut scrub. They use all natural products in their treatments. After a very relaxing massage a yummy fresh coconut scrub was rubbed over my body, leaving my skin moist and soft. Then I climbed into a bubble bath with a view of the river below and nibbled on fresh fruit and drank tea. I was fortunate to get a blue glimpse of a kingfisher down by the river. Other massages include: aromatherapy, Deep Tissue, Hot and Cold Stone Massage T h e r a p y, O r i e n t a l S c a l p massage, Abhyanga (an Ayurvedic body treatment) and Neck, shoulders, back and feet. Ayusha Spa also has two Balinese healers on call - Mudiani provides intuitive full body massage with sacred Sanskrit prayers and mantras and Kasna practices a Balinese healing massage using intuitive energy techniques with a traditional family recipe for Boreh made with 31 types of indigenous medicinal herbs and spices. Ayusha Wellness takes a holistic approach to wellbeing, taking the time to find out your healing needs through consultation. This enables the therapists to address your specific issues during the treatment. It’s a great place to hang out for the day enjoying the tranquility. Svorga Loka Resort, Jl. Penestanan Kelod, Ubud. Karsa Spa also offers Deep Tissue, Balinese, Back, Neck, Shoulder, Shiatsu, T h a i Yo g a , Therapeutic Sports, Tibetan Bowl and Kids massage. They have 10 treatment rooms and a staff of 25, which can handle large groups. I highly recommend a walk through the rice fields to Karsa Spa and enjoy an amazing massage.

I enjoy a deep pressure massage and was delighted with the pressure points she employed during the massage, releasing some deep tension in my muscles. She also gave a good neck massage, something that is often lacking in Balinese massage. After thoroughly working on my back she moved down to each of my legs and feet. The front of the body included legs, arms, stomach and a pressure point face massage. I really enjoyed this massage and recommend it.

Jaens Spa Shanti was a pleasant surprise set amongst rice fields. With 10 rooms, everything is new looking with a Balinese theme. I enjoyed their popular ninety minute Bali Relaxation massage, which includes techniques from Balinese, Deep tissue, Thai and Reflexology. She worked on my back for a long time working out all of the tight muscles on my back and legs. The front of body worked on my legs, arms, stomach and finished with a lovely neck and face massage. After the massage she applied a Boreh paste which quickly began to heat up my muscles. This felt lovely. After 20 minutes she scrubbed it off my skin then I slid into a warm bath for a relaxing time. They also offer Warm stone, Jaen Reflexology, Back Relief, Traditional Balinese, Jaens Synchronicity with 2 therapists and their exclusive Flow Relaxation Radjanenenda massage with the owner Jaen, known as one of the best in Ubud. This lovely spa is a great place for relaxation and pampering. Jaens Spa Shanti Jl. Banjar Kumbuh Desa Mas. T: 0361-8768136/ 087860117659 W : www.jaensspaubud.com E: jaensspashanti@gmail.com

Set back from the bustling traffic on Monkey Forest is The Kayma Spa, which overlooks rice fields in a peaceful sanctuary. Here I found peace and calm and was greeted by very friendly staff and a cool drink. While refreshing myself I filled out a consultation form. Then my therapist led me to a quiet room with a view of the rice fields. I was having their popular Balinese massage, which the receptionist explained that everyone has Balinese massage but at Kayma, theirs is different. Indeed it was. It combines acupressure with muscle manipulations.

Each year I select some notable spas in Ubud that are known for their great massages. I was very impressed that all four spas offered a consultation form prior to a treatment which included drawings of the body that I could mark the areas that either needed more attention or should be avoided. It also asked what kind of pressure I preferred. The products they used were high quality and the staff spoke very good English. Plus the spas were exceptionally clean, offering beautiful views.

The Snakeman of Bali is a Fishman too… by ParacelsusAsia It is perhaps fitting that the man we know as the Snakeman of Bali, a man possessing a well-developed sense of humour matched by a keen scientific mind, has been written about best by that august body, the Herpetological Society of Ireland (HSI). As any Irish person will tell you Ireland has no snakes because back in the 5th century AD Saint Patrick, who brought the island into the fold of Rome and, just as surely as he consigned the old Celtic Church to the dustbin of ecclesiastical history did, with his bishop’s rod, usher all the serpents of Erin into the sea - never to be seen again. Alas, in this case, as the man once sang “it ain’t necessarily so”. For sure, it’s true Ireland, along with New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica have no snakes outside of zoos and pets, the reason for it has more to do with geography and the ice age than it has with Saint Pat. Of course the reason the shamrock Saint and his Roman sponsors got the credit is because snakes are evil nasty things that led Adam & Eve astray and that, dear reader - is why the Lord put enmity between the serpent and man to this day. It is also why close to 200 species of snake are in danger of extinction today. Of course, it’s a bum rap. Snakes are sexy, healing and downright archetypically fascinating… we know that. And any herpetologist or scientist studying snakes is going to tell us they play a key role in the eco-system and snake venom is used to treat diseases ranging from cancer to haemophilia. In other words unless we stop wiping them out and learn to appreciate them (at a distance), we’re going to be sorry. Which brings me back to Ron Lilley, the Snakeman of Bali with whom I spent a very agreeable few hours recently, shooting the breeze and generally finding out where he was coming from. Without stridency or hint of peachiness Ron is fascinated by the animal world and reptiles in particularly. When, at one stage in our conversation, discussing the state of the planet, I remarked in passing that - God help me, I rather missed the Unabomber - he almost giggled, but I could see he definitely included human fauna in his ecological spectrum and this is also very much part of his work. Since he was a small boy growing up in England in the mid-1950s Ron was into wild life, particularly snakes (I’d lay money he was one of those kids that produce snakes from his pocket in class). His parents were smart enough to let him follow his nose, which led him unerringly to a BSc in Zoology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. After graduation he worked in a number of jobs which included a stint in a rather bizarre zoo on the Isle of Wight run by an eccentric owner, into which he managed to rope in his brother. It was during this period that he first learned to handle venomous snakes. 1986 he made his first trip to Indonesia as project leader of an expedition collecting reptile specimens in Maluku for the Indonesian and British Natural History Museums. It was during this expedition that he met and became close friends another member of the team, Gayatri Reksodihhardjo, an marine conservationist, whom he was to meet again working in Central America and subsequently marry. Having completed his Masters degree in Conservation Biology at the University of Kent studying the Komodo dragon, the couple settled in Indonesia permanently, working with various nature conservancy NGOs and studying reptiles throughout the archipelago. The International Nature Foundation – Yayasan LINI In 2007 Gayatri and Ron co-founded the Indonesian Nature Foundation or Yayasan LINI based in Bali, which is the vehicle for their life’s work and shared vision. LINI is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of community-based marine conservation areas so as to promote sustainable fisheries in Indonesia. The Indonesian word LINI means “line” or connection. The organisation seeks to establish firm and lasting connections between all stakeholders involved in coastal resource management strong in the knowledge that in establishing and maintaining strong connections between all people involved, will result in the development of long-lasting solutions for sustainability. LINI’s vision is a future where people recognize the richness and value of marine ecosystems as a common global resource, and in which Indonesian coastal communities are committed and empowered to care for their environment thereby enjoying a higher quality of life. The NGOs mission is to work with marginalized coastal communities to reverse the degradation of Indonesian coral reefs

and raise awareness about responsible and sustainable marine resource use. Such projects include working with community groups in northern Bali to pilot reef rehabilitation programs to support Marine Conservation Areas management. Healthier reefs have already led to improved and sustainable livelihoods in a number of communities. These activities have also contributed to protecting community beaches from storm surges, providing sustainable sources for food and the ornamental fish trade, while creating opportunities for eco-tourism activities in the region. A LINI Aquaculture and Training Centre (LATC) was officially opened in April 2016 with a great attendance from community groups, university students, Government representatives from the District and Jakarta, as well as the private sector. Good progress has already been made with trainings for volunteer groups and intern students. The LATC holds various trainings and anyone interested should contact LINI on +62 361 8427 168 for more information. Key LINI activities include: Sustainable Ornamental Fisheries Indonesia has been a hotspot for marine ornamental fish collection for the global market for decades. A responsible and sustainable ornamental fish trade urgently needs to be developed to combat over-exploitation and destructive collecting techniques (cyanide) that are widespread. Effective reef fisheries management policies are lacking, and no local or national legal framework exists to support or regulate ornamental fish collection and trade. LINI is the only local NGO seeking to address these issues working toward a sustainable marine ornamental fisheries in Indonesia. Reef Restoration LINI is helping Balinese coastal communities in Buleleng and Karangasem, as well as other places in Indonesia to rehabilitate their reefs by establishing artificial reef aggregation structures in damaged areas to serve as habitats for fish and other reef organisms, on which the coastal communities depend. In Bali, many resorts help by hosting reef restoration as part of their environmental care program. LINI assists resorts install artificial reefs, coral tables, as well as training their staff to monitor and maintain sites. LINI aims to continue assisting the coastal communities of Buleleng to make positive changes to the marine environment there. Together with the fishing groups, LINI scientists have been monitoring and carefully recording the progress of reef restoration, and so far show that significant numbers of fish, which had previously disappeared, are now returning to these reefs. Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPS) A key LINI activity is the Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP), which is an alliance of fishers, exporters and buyers working together to help fisheries meet the demands of the international market while reducing illegal fishing practices, habitat destruction and by catch. Working with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, an international organization formed to promote sustainable seafood worldwide, LINI assists in the formation and co-ordinates implementation of various FIP projects in Indonesian waters. These include projects for: Small scale Pelagic fisheries in Lombok Strait Project funded by IMACS – USAID to monitor small scale small pelagic (near-surface) fisheries involving 200 fishermen in East Bali (Kusamba and Seraya) and West Lombok (Ampenan and Bangko-Bangko). The species monitored are Frigate and Mackerel tuna in the Lombok Strait, important fishing areas for fishermen from Bali and Lombok, where hundreds of boats fish daily. Small scale handline Tuna in Banda Sea Tuna fishing is an important artisanal industry in the Banda Islands, Indonesia’s fabled Spice Islands. Fishermen catch tuna using handlines from very small two to three man boats that are equipped with ice. Every day, they leave their villages early in the morning, and on the same day they return to sell their catch to processing boat moored in a sheltered strait near their home. The Banda handline tuna fishery consists of at least 200 fishers. LINI is assisting them with management and development in an FIP. Small scale Snapper & Grouper fisheries in Makassar Strait Snapper and grouper reef fishing provides livelihoods for thousands of fishermen throughout Indonesia. The fish are caught with either handlines on shallow reefs or caught using bottom longlines. Fiisheries in many areas are suffering from overexploitation and habitat destruction. An ongoing FIP is working to

ensure fisheries will recover.

Wildlife Conservation Close to the hearts of the founders LINI works with a variety of Wildlife Conservation projects, including: Bali Snake Patrol Still very much Ron’s baby. Snakes are important pest control agents in Bali, but their numbers have dwindled largely because snakes are feared, and tend to be killed on sight. Their skins are used for the leather trade, and these all come from wild-caught animals, as there are no commercial snake farms in Indonesia. Ron provides a service called the “Bali Snake Patrol”, which includes identification and capture/rescue of snakes, advice on snake-proofing premises, educational talks, and information about snakebite. He aims to raise public awareness about reptiles and other wildlife, promoting safety, and helping to conserve Indonesia’s reptile fauna. Ron has assisted in the making of TV documentaries about snakes and other reptiles. He is a regular contributor of articles about Indonesian wildlife. He also recently contributed to a field survey for the management and training of villagers to protect nesting areas of rare sea turtles in West Sumatra. For more information about the Bali Snake Patrol and its work, or for consultancies about reptiles and other wildlife management issues, contact Ron by email at ronlilley@lini.or.id or at rphlilley@ yahoo.co.uk. Ron can also be contacted via the LINI office or direct by mobile No. +62 813 3849 6700. Photos of venomous and non-venomous snakes found in Bali, along with other useful information, can be found on Ron Lilley’s Snake Patrol Facebook Page. Banggai Cardinal Fish Communities in the Banggai archipelago in northeast Sulawesi depend for their living on the collection and local sale of marine products, including food fish, octopus, squid, sea cucumbers, and live fish for the international marine ornamental trade. One sought-after species is the Banggai, once a b u n d a n t throughout the B a n g g a i archipelago, is now the first marine ornamental fish facing extinction due to over-collection. In early 2009 LINI launched a community-based coral reef conservation initiative surveying distribution for the Banggai cardinal fish, and monitoring its population in the area. With the support coral reef conservation can support more sustainable reef fisheries, and serve as a model for elsewhere. Traditional Education LINI runs a traditional education program with the children in North Bali coastal villages. At these sessions, children learn about nature, their culture, including how to make traditional teas and play Indonesian instruments. Back to the Snakeman The members of the Herpetological Society of Ireland wanted to know what Ron’s ultimate goal was? He told them he wanted to rescue snakes from people and vice-versa. What he is doing today in Bali is just that - educating people about snakes and their place in the local environment, providing accurate identifications, and up-to-date information about snakebite first aid. To this end he eagerly awaits funding for the first-ever scientifically-valid Bali snakebite survey. However badly needed, the project remains stalled. Funding agencies like Rotary, who are interested, need to know how many people are bitten and how many die before they can know what funds to commit. It’s a classic Catch 22; without data, no surveys, and without surveys, no data can be collected. Apart from the ever-present shortage of funding for the Bali Snake Patrol call-out service, which is by welcome donation, the only other serpentine concern on Ron’s mind is snake anti-venom. There really isn’t any in Bali, or not much that’s actually appropriate to the species and bite to be treated. “One day I’d like to build my own small reptile facility for venom extraction, education and snake viewing”, says Ron wistfully. It’s not much to ask, he’s doing a grand job. I hope he gets it. ParacelsusAsia ParacelsusAsia@yahoo.com

Do Children Thrive Online?

Teens are now spending an average of almost nine hours a day on line -- watching videos, posting photos on Instagram or chatting with friends on Snapchat -- according to a recent study prepared by Common Sense Media, a family technology education non profit. Common Sense’s mission is to ‘help kids thrive in a world of media and technology.’ According to Common Sense Media’s mission statement, ‘the media content [kids] consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century.’ Common Sense Media’s Executive Director, Jim Steyer, said in a Washington Post interview that he was ‘staggered by the amount of time that young people are spending social media – and how little the government has done to explore what that means.’ Many of us have heard about blue light from digital screens disrupting sleep patterns and know to take devices away from our kids (and ourselves) at least two hours before bedtime. We’ve heard or read that screen time for children should be limited – some say a half hour a day, some say an hour at day at most. Theories abound that digital devices may be affecting our children’s neurological development, their thinking, their social skills, their decision making ability, their very temperament and character. A Kaiser Family Foundation study in 2010 showed that kids aged 8-10 may spend up to five and a half hours daily on line, and that this daily total jumps to over 8 hours for tweens and teenagers. Steyer said ‘there is a definite upward trend … we are now in the true emergence of digital natives; that has enormous implications for anyone who cares about media, technology and children.’ I’ve discussed in a previous article the negative aspects of teens spending so much of their lives on line and hazards for parents to be concerned about and watch out for. But what are the positive aspects or benefits of future generations spending so much time in a digital world? Increasingly more and more of school course work and homework assignments are being put on line for students to access at home. Museums and educational facilities are placing huge swathes of information, learning and training resources online as well. Sites like Code or CodeAcademy that focus on teaching people technology skills and programming languages are now freely available to anyone who has an Internet connection. As our children become adults, they will consider it normal to go online to learn or research new things. Raisingchildren.net.au, a parenting website in Australia, lists the way that media can benefit children. For example, young children can stay in touch with distant family members or parents who travel frequently. Young kids can develop skills through social media use, such as literacy, numeracy and social behaviour. Programs such as Play School or Sesame Street, or apps like Teach Your Monster to Read, can teach kids the alphabet, as well as counting or identifying shapes – early math skills. Sites such as Sesame Street or ABC for Kids, or apps like Toca’s Tea Party, all model positive social skills by showing kids interacting in a healthy way. Older children can develop problem solving and critical thinking skills by playing computer games (that are designed to help develop these skills). According to the raisingchildren site, a survey of parents shows that the benefits of video games include improved motor skills, better hand-eye coordination and more creativity. Digital media can also inspire creativity in older kids by developing their imagination and story-telling abilities through apps such as My Story or Bubi Draw or by creating their own videos or taking photographs for YouTube or Instagram. Creating online content and receiving feedback from others can also make children ‘aware that their opinions and decisions matter.’ Teenagers can benefit from social media by writing blogs or participating in chat rooms. Teens can learn about political and social issues by reading about them online or watching videos. They become aware of global issues – and the debates surrounding them -- such as climate change, the environment or

refugees that get widespread coverage in online media and forums. A Pew Research Center survey taken in 2012 found that future adults will both benefit and suffer from what it terms their ‘hyperconnected lives.’ The survey showed that the more expertise a respondent had in this area, the more likely they were to respond positively, believing that ‘changes in learning behavior and cognition will generally produce positive outcomes.’

Danah Boyd, of Microsoft Research, wrote in her survey response that ‘brains are being rewired … the techniques and mechanism to engage in rapid-fire attention shifting will be extremely useful for the creative class whose job it is to integrate ideas.’ Amber Case, a cyberanthropologist, wrote, ‘the human brain is wired to adapt to what the environment around it requires for survival. Today and in the future, it will not be as important to internalize information but to elastically be able to take multiple sources of information in, synthesize them and make rapid decisions.’ Susan Price, CEO and chief Web strategist at Firecat Studio and Tedx San Antonio organizer, believes that ‘the amazing plasticity of the brain is nowhere as evident as in the rapid adaptations humans are making in response to our unprecedented access to electronic information. Those who bemoan the perceived decline in deep thinking or engagement, faceto-face social skills and dependency on technology fail to appreciate the need to evolve our processes and behaviors to suit the new reality and opportunities. Young people and those who embrace the new connectedness are developing and evolving new standards and skills at a rate unprecedented in our history. Overall, our ability to connect, share and exchange information with other human beings is a strong net positive for humanity’ she wrote in her survey. William Schrader, a consultant who founded PSINet in the 1980s was one of the most optimistic respondents. He wrote in his survey, ‘the future is bright for our youth worldwide. Technology by 2020 will enable the youth to ignore political limitations, including country borders, and especially ignore time and distance as an inhibitor to communications. With or without devices on them, they will communicate with ease, waxing philosophic and joking in the same sentence. I have already seen youths of today between 20 and 35 who show all of these abilities, all driven by and/or enabled by the Internet and the services/technologies that are collectively tied to and by it.’ Negative outcomes were listed as being a need for instant gratification and the loss of patience. Alvaro Retana, a technologist with Hewlett-Packard, felt that connected humans might lose the ability in the future to tackle complex challenges. ‘The short attention spans resulting from the quick interactions will be detrimental to focusing on the harder problems, and we will probably see a stagnation in many areas: technology, even social venues such as literature,’ he wrote. ‘The people who will strive and lead the charge will be the ones able to disconnect themselves to focus on specific problems.’ Many participants worried about the loss of ‘deep thinking’ or the ability to reflect and gain wisdom. Concern was also expressed about future generations having difficulty sustaining their focus on one thing and having very short attention spans. They might be more likely to seek ‘quick fixes’ rather than thinking through a problem carefully or thoroughly investigating a solution. Stephen Masiclat, a communications professor at Syracuse University, predicts that society will come to ‘devalue retrospective thinking and the wisdom it imparts. The impact of a future ‘re-wiring’ due to the multitasking and short-term mindset will be mostly negative not because it will reflect changes in the physical nature of thinking, but because the social incentives for deep engagement will erode,’ he wrote in his survey.

Local News Linda Garland - Champion of Bali Style and Founder of Environmental Bamboo Foundation Dies in Australia On Tuesday, January 3, 2017, Bali lost another expatriate of legendary stature when Linda Garland succumbed after a long battle with pancreatic cancer in Lorne, Victoria. Australia. Born in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland 70 year ago, Linda Garland grew up on a landed estate before bringing her indefatigable force-of-nature personality to the vibrant cultural renaissance underway in London in the 60s and 70s. After suffering horrendous injuries in a car accident in her 20s during a visit to Italy that necessitated months of hospitalization, Garland recovered and embarked on tours of parts unknown, a journey that eventually brought her to the Island of Bali in 1974 - an encounter leaving both Garland and the Island forever changed. In Bali, she married Indonesian Amir Rabik with whom she mothered two sons, Arief and Karim. Garland passionately embraced her new home and its cultural identities that complemented her interests in interior design. Along the way, Garland became one of the earliest proponents in a design movement that would become internationally known as “Bali Style.” [www.balidiscovery.com January 7, 2017]

Police Now Suspect Suicide in Death of Man Who Fell from Uluwatu Temple into the Indian Ocean A Bali tourist from Surakarta, Central Java, Kwan Anto Randy Saputro (57) fell to his death from the 100-meter cliff face at Uluwatu, South Bali on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Balipost.com reports that Saputro was visiting the area with his wife, Auw Jang Phin Khuan (51), at the time of the incident. The exact circumstances surrounding the man’s fall remain unclear, but witnesses say he climbed over a barrier fence before presumably jumping over the rock face into the ocean below. Moments before falling from the cliff, Saputro handed his handphone and wallet to his wife, telling her didn’t want the monkeys roaming the temple to take those items. Police from South Kuta now theorize that Saputro may have taken his own life by leaping off the cliff. Police are basing their suspicions on detailed interviews with eyewitnesses who saw the man jump into the ocean and discussions with the man’s wife. That the man had handed his handphone to his wife make it unlikely that his decision to climb over the fence was done in order to take a “selfie.” NusaBali quotes the head of the South Kuta Police Precinct who said his officers now strongly suspect the Central Javanese man took his own life.

Aussie Surfer Injured in Suspected Shark Attack at Balian, Bali An Australian man has reportedly been injured in a suspected shark attack while he was surfing at Balian Beach, Bali. Local newspaper Tribun Bali is reporting that Daniel Qeran, 48, was out surfing when he was allegedly attacked by a shark at 7:30 am on Monday morning. Qeran has reportedly suffered wounds on his right hand from the suspected shark attack. “It’s alleged that the victim is suffering from a shark bite. The victim has been taken to BIMC Hospital in Badung,” Tabanan Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner I Putu Oka Suyasa told Tribun Bali. Balian, a popular surfing spot, is in Bali’s Tabanan regency and was the same site where an American surfer was attacked in April 2016. I Made Edi Sumardika, an apparent witness of the incident, told Tribun Bali that there were about 10 foreigners out surfing at Balian, when all of a sudden they started rushing towards the beach. One of the surfers who came out of the water was bleeding, Sumardika said. At the request of the victim, the surfer was rushed to BIMC, according to Tribun’s report. [Coconuts Bali January 9, 2017] Taiwanese Couple Falls Ill with Chikungunya Fever after Bali Visit A Taiwanese couple was confirmed to have contracted chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne disease with symptoms similar to dengue fever, after a visit to Indonesia last month, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday. The CDC said the couple went to the Indonesian resort island of Bali last month and the wife developed a fever and muscle pains on Dec. 18. At first, she was diagnosed with dengue fever but on Dec. 21, it was confirmed that she had been infected with the chikungunya virus, the CDC said. The husband, meanwhile, developed a fever on Dec. 15 and was diagnosed with flu, but on Dec. 29 was confirmed to have chikungunya fever, according to the CDC.

The local manager of the Uluwatu Temple Complex called police at 12:15 pm, telling search and rescue officials that the man was floating in the surf and not moving. A 25-man rescue team arrived a short time later when a two officers rappelled down the cliff to the ocean’s surface to rig a hoist to bring the man’s body back to the top of the cliff. Because of the challenges posed by the terrain, the recovery of Saputro’s body required two hours. [www.balidiscovery.com January 7, 2017]

It said Taiwan health authorities have checking on the couple’s movements in order to clean up mosquito breeding grounds in areas they have been to, and will continue such action until Jan. 17.

Bali Cop Murder: Sara Connor Expects Boyfriend to ‘tell the truth’ in Court

Since 2007, there have been 94 confirmed cases of chikungunya fever in Taiwan, all imported, according to the CDC. It said 54 cases were imported from Indonesia, 15 from the Philippines, and the remainder from other countries. [Focus Taiwan January 3, 2017]

Byron Bay mum Sara Connor says she believes the judges who will decide her fate in Bali will be fair and judge her on the facts and evidence and not outside influences. And she says boyfriend and co-accused David Taylor, whom she said she loves, will tell the truth when he is called soon to testify at her trial and will tell the court she was not involved in the murder. Connor was speaking after her murder trial in the Denpasar District Court was adjourned on Tuesday after none of the prosecution’s witnesses called to testify turned up. The 46-year-old mum of two young boys told of her wish for the truth to come out, of her love for her two children and of the quiet Christmas she has just spent behind bars in Kerobokan prison. “I want to believe that the judges will be fair and they will judge by the facts and by the evidence and not by other influence and other pressures,” Connor said on the sidelines of her trial. She said the Indonesian legal system was different to what she is used to. “I really hope the Judges will take the right decision, based on the fact and evidence. I am sure they realise that I am innocent,” Connor said. [Cairns Post January 3, 2017]

Sydney Man Vasco Rodrigues Found Dead in Bali Pool An Australian man has been found dead in a resort swimming pool, in Ubud, Bali. The 27-year-old man, Vasco Rodrigues, from Sydney was on holiday with his girlfriend at the time. His girlfriend, 35-year-old Miroslava Kubeckova told Indonesian police that Rodrigues went for a swim after they had breakfast, when she retired to their room. Displaced Families from Mass Eviction at Bali’s Kampung Bugis turn to Mosque for Shelter A mosque has provided refuge sought by over a hundred people after a land dispute and mass eviction at Bali’s Kampung Bugis village in Serangan, south Denpasar. Homes were leveled to the ground and long-time, non-title-holding residents who had built their homes on the land were kicked out on Tuesday. The residents did not go without resistance though, blocking the paths of destruction crews-but in the end, the crews had their way. The Kampung Bugis eviction left around 36 households-at least 150 people-homeless. Unsure of where to go, many have fled to nearby Serangan mosque, Masjid Assyuhada. From young children to the elderly, the families have reportedly been camping out in the pavilion area of the mosque. “Some of us have tents. But not all are accommodated, so must stay in the pavilion hall of the mosque,” Hazan, a former Kampung Bugis resident, told Merdeka on Thursday. These tents seem to actually be makeshift shelters with tarps as roofs, set up on the side of the road. “My child keeps crying, wanting to sleep in his own house. Sleeping on the roadside under tarps, there’s much less heat,” another man from Kampung Bugis, Ega, told Merdeka. With no assistance from the government yet and no other compensation following the eviction, the former Kampung Bugis residents seem to be stuck, with nowhere else to go. Snorkeler Drowns in Nusa Penida A Denpasar resident has died snorkeling in Nusa Penida, a small island to the east of Bali. Nyawa Julian Ulam Hutabarat, 42, had been snorkeling in the waters of Crystal Bay on Saturday. Hutabarat’s mother, Dameria Martha Taruki, 61, had reportedly been present on the beach at the time of the incident. Hutabarat, who reportedly started snorkeling around 9:30 am, had come up several times to the shore to drink water and then would return to the sea. But around 1:30 pm, Taruki became alarmed when Hutabarat hadn’t surfaced for some time. Taruki got help from local residents to search for Hutabarat, who was ultimately found floating, unconscious nearby, reports said. Hutabarat was evacuated to a health center in Nusa Penida, but on arrival was declared dead. It’s alleged that Hutabarat became exhausted while snorkeling and drowned before being able to make it back to shore. “Regarding the incident, it’s alleged that the victim became fatigued and died while snorkeling and lots of water entered her body,” Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Suastika told Tribun Bali. [Coconuts Bali January 9, 2017] 3 Peruvian Men Arrested Over Bali ATM Theft Whether it’s by force or card skimming, ATMs sure are a popular target in Bali. Three Peruvian men have been arrested after fleeing to Java for allegedly stealing hundreds of millions of rupiah from ATMs at convenience stores in Bali and other Indonesian cities. The three suspects, from Lima, Peru, have been identified in reports as Robert Castro De La Cuba, 27, Jose William Salazar Ortiz, 30, and Frankho Pizarro Solano, 27. “They deliberately came to Bali to steal,” Denpasar Police Chief Nyoman Artana said on Thursday, as quoted by Merdeka. Cuba and Salazar were tracked down and arrested in central Jakarta, while Solano was arrested in Surabaya, reports said. The group’s first hit was a BCA bank ATM on Jl. Tangkuban Perahu, Denpasar in which they took Rp 117 million from on Nov. 28, 2016, according to Artana. From Bali’s Ubung Terminal, the three then caught a bus to Surabaya where they next targeted BCA and Mandiri ATMs, allegedly stealing Rp 387 million. When stealing from an ATM, one man would stand watch outside, while the other two would disable CCTV cameras and break into the convenience store. After getting into the store, the suspects would pry open the ATM and vandalize the machine, pouring soda over it, Artana told reporters. The three alleged perps are subject to charges carrying a max penalty of nine years, according to Merdeka. [Coconuts Bali January 6, 2017]

MUSIC MATTERS Greetings music pioneers and welcome to this first New year’s edition of Music Matters of 2017 here in your local Bali Advertiser. This issue we revisit a bar in Sanur which has given itself to live music, checking out an Aussie expat protest writer and looking forward to what 2017 is going to bring musically to the island of the gods. So without further ado welcome to the new year.

counters his beautiful ex-girlfriend and former bandmates who have since moved on to bigger and better things. The story is pretty much the story most of us go through as musicians trying to cut it on the scene but so often drifting into mediocrity instead. Although not naturally an actor Billy Joe plays a convincing character probably realizing that it so easily could have been himself had he not made it. If nothing else its a great side project from an otherwise very talented and very successful musician and well worth a look.

2016 was an evil year for the deaths of great musicians, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen the list has been long and miserable then George Micheal decided to put his name on the stained wall that was 2016. What a year. Well, good riddance I say and its high time we had some good musical news for a change so let’s ask the gods, to please do their utmost to make 2017 memorable for better reasons than the deaths of legendary musicians. OK. to business The Onion Bar in Sanur has had a rep as a good place for live music but following our last look the bar This year saw some great festivals here in Bali. Bloc party has gone all out to make itself THE place for live music in at Soundrenaline, UBUD Village Jazz and the Blues Festival Sanur. New and very loud Marshall amp stacks, new and all standard fare but 2016 also marked the beginning of a improved larger stage area and a serious amount of equipment true connection between Bali and Perth as musicians from has given it the edge on Casablanca and also Linga Longa either side of the pond traveled over to play music at local and although it does not have the following yet, I predict that venues in both Indo and Australia. The world is becoming a in 2017 the bar will take off and become a massive go-to live global village and for musicians trying to make a name for music venue in the area. themselves the free and now cheaper movement of people from country to country could not have come at a better time. Owner Gary spoke to me over the phone and had a quick chat about what was happening, why it was happening, and when Ok so to business. This year we can expect some events. is bringing something new into Hi Gary, the arena. Billy Joe Armstrong Hi Tobes singer of one of my favorite T-So what’s the crack here, you said you had some new 2017 bands when I was a teen, plans for the bar? Green Day has ditched the G-Yea that’s right, we are totally re-vamping and updating all stage in favor of the silver the music equipment. The Onion is growing up (or down descreen. Just released at the pending on your point of view) we are ditching the eatery vibe very end of last year Ordinary and concentrating on live music in a big way. World sees The mid-life crisis of a husband and father Perry T- Cool, so what’s the plan? (Billy Joe Armstrong) who, on G-We’ve already added some Marshal gear, we are re-doing his 40th birthday, decides to the stage area and providing serious equipment. Not only that revisit his punk-rock past by we are going to run battle of the bands live music challenges throwing an extravagant party with big prizes, showcase local talent, and maybe even do in the presidential suite of the Drake Hotel - where he en- some open invites to some international artists.

T-Wow definitely a good move! when you say international artists, what kind of genre of music are you going to showcase? G- Mainly rock, some punk but rock covers is where the action is, we are aiming to try and corner the market for great rock acts and with so much talent on the island it’s going to be easy. Now Australia is famous musically for some great acts AC/ DC, John Farnham, Kylie Minogue ( I had to cough when I said the last one) but I met up with a less famous but equally talented singer-songwriter in Perth the last time I was over there to discuss his love of Bali and the idea of a tour. Marty Cowie is no stranger to the music scene and has written tracks which have won songwriting competitions and have ended up being played on National Australian radio stations, his music speaks to people and largely has a political slant, owing to his own understanding of the world and his own non-violent beliefs. His song Bosnia, was about a young boy who grew up in the war-torn country and the only way out he could see was to become a soldier. The song is a glaring indictment of the war in the Balkans and won national acclaim in the mid 90’s. Marty told me that he is planning to bring some of his music to Indonesia in the near future and would love to play in some of the bars in Kuta, Legian, and Sanur. Ok folks that’s about all for now. Until then as always keep it live and make it matter. TJB out.
