Burke & Hare It is the early Nineteenth Century in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the city is renowned for its schools of medical learning. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of good corpses available for anatomical study, and two enterprising men fall into a profitable new business. Loosely based on a true story, director John Landis makes a very funny movie, even if it is a little bit off beat. The movie stars Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis, plus, a wealth of terrific character actors who all excel at this type of eccentric English humor. In addition, the movie features some superb Edinburgh locations, and sumptuous interior sets and costumes. The Ealing Studios are famous for this type of quirky English comedy, and this film is a marvelous example of the Studio’s style. The Fighter This is another movie which is based on a true story, and it follows the career of American boxer ‘Irish’ Micky Ward, and his unlikely road to the world light welter-weight title. Although set in the world of prize fighting, the movie is actually a very good study of the dynamics of a dysfunctional family. If Micky is to have any sort of boxing career, he must escape the clutches of his greedy and conniving mother, and his elder brother, a failed boxer, who acts as Mickey’s trainer. Both mother and elder son are only interested in what they can get out of Micky. The movie is well directed by David O. Russell, and it also contains some very powerful performances from actors Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams. 127 Hours And, again, another movie based on real events. This one tells the story of mountain climber Aron Ralston, and how he was trapped for 127 hours in an isolated canyon, when a falling boulder pinned him down. This movie is in the new genre of the principal character and major action being restricted to a confined space. Director Danny Boyle comes up with many inventive ways to maintain visual and narrative interest, however, there has been so much publicity about this movie that it is probably not necessary to go into all the gruesome details. There is a tendency, while watching the movie, to drift off while waiting for the gory bits. Nevertheless, if you are not familiar with all the Hollywood hype, the ending of the movie will come as a shock. I Am Love A wealthy Milanese family is holding a dinner party, and a chef, who is a friend of one of the sons of the family, pays an unexpected call to deliver a cake. After briefly meeting him, the mother of the family is captivated by the chef. Then, through a series of luncheons, dinners, and fetes, she is to fall madly in love. They conduct a passionate affair that will change every ones lives. Italian director Luca Guadagnino makes a visually stunning and highly romantic love story. Like much of Italian cinema, the movie is slowly paced, but, it builds to a touching crescendo. English actress Tilda Swinton speaks impeccable Italian throughout the movie, and her acting is simply flawless. The Way Back In most of his films, such as ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ (1975), ‘The Last Wave’ (1977), and ‘The Mosquito Coast’ (1986), director Peter Weir has always investigated a theme of man challenged by his environment. In his latest movie, ‘The Way Back’, a group of men are to be challenged by a series of environments. A handful of prisoners escape from a Russian Gulag, and they must trek from Siberia to India to gain their freedom. Along the way they confront dense forests, arid deserts, and soaring mountains. The movie has some pretty spectacular scenery, but, it is a rather long hike, and after a while, you just sit through it waiting to see who survives the journey. Faster Dwayne Johnson plays a paroled prisoner, who goes on a

rampage killing a lot of people who he thinks betrayed him in the past. Hot on his trail is Billy Bob Thornton, a cop with only a few days to go before retirement, and who also has a major drug problem. Total chaos is to ensue. Actually, ‘Faster’ is an inappropriate name for this film. It is not all that fast. Much time is spent developing character motivation, which slows down the speed considerably.

Blue Valentine To depict the events which led to the collapse of a marriage, this movie flips backwards and forwards in time. Eventually, it becomes hard to figure out what time zones the events shown are really in. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams give strong performances, in a movie which is a lot of hard work. Fair Game A CIA agent, who suspects that the Bush administration manipulated secret intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq, is discredited and persecuted by the White House. Australian actress Naomi Watts is fair enough, I guess, in this typical ‘Bush Bashing’ movie. Due Date In 1987 director John Hughes made a terrific comedy called ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’, which starred Steve Martin and John Candy. Now, with some slight plot changes, the movie is back as ‘Due Date’, with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. However, it is still the same old movie. The Resident Hilary Swank has won two Oscars. What on earth is she doing in this trash?

Mr. Robet’s Best Buys The Sicilian Girl After the deaths of her father and brother a girl vows revenge on the Mafia. Burke & Hare Two men fall into a new business providing corpses for anatomical study. Love & Other Drugs A salesman falls in love with a woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Burlesque A Los Angeles cabaret is facing hard times and it is saved by a new waitress. Kick-Ass A student becomes a Super Hero and fights crime in the alleys of New York. The Fighter A promising boxer must escape the grip of his greedy and conniving family. Let Me In A boy is bullied at school, and a girl shows him how to stand up for himself. 127 Hours A mountain climber is trapped in a canyon, when a boulder pins him down. I Am Love The mother of a wealthy Italian family falls in love with a friend of her son. The King’s Speech A very unorthodox speech therapist cures the stammer of King George VI.
