3 Team’s Note

rd

As for tourists, Bali seems to be stopping time in an utter relaxation. For us at The Mag, time seems to be flying by: our first magazine was launched three months ago and yet it seems like yesterday. The Mag 2 grew into twenty pages thicker than the first one and The Mag 3 is loaded with heaps of cool content to guide you and enjoy the island at the fullest! Last month we had tons of fun creating some fresh content for you: we hit the road on our motorbikes and strolled down the Ten Best Bali Beaches (page 42) for you to enjoy, where at one of the beaches, Geger Beach in Nusa Dua, we stumbled upon Mr. & Ms. Wayan who told us about their seaweed plantation (page 34). After gettin’ our suntan at the beaches we hit downtown to Seminyak’s brand-new piercing and jewelry outlet Rabia where we met Mr. Albar, one of the most recognizable Faces of Bali (page 36), for a chat about body-related art and modification. Our regular feature What’s Cooking led us to the much praised authentic Italian eatery Osteria Telese down on Jalan Laksmana right in front of the Oberoi Hotel, where we had a laidback evening with Italian Chef Mr. Miko who introduced us to a true Napolean dining! Belissimo! Once in a while we all have to do ‘it’, sittin’ down on the toilet. How normal it may seem back in the west, yet how different it is in Indonesia. We’ll get you tourists up to speed on a little thing called The Asian Squat (see page 18). Okay, you can now go on yourself. Ready... squat... and read! The Baru di Bali team

The Mag • The Asian Squat

it’s all about the

opinion

Asian Squat As mentioned in an award-winning documentary by Daniel Hsia (How to do the Asian Squat [2002]), the Asian Squat is much different from other squats. Originating in India, the squat made its way to China, where Asians figured that it was the ideal way to eat rice and be ready to defecate at any given time. Given these uses, the squat has evolved into more than just a makeshift eating position.

The most important use of the squat is to keep the Asian bottom clean It is now a way of life. Asians everywhere use it when they are smoking, reading, eating, waiting, shaving, and any other gerundverb combination you can think of. Let’s not forget the most important use of the squat, keeping the Asian bottom cleaner while using the bathroom (which in many Asian countries is just a hole in the ground with running water). Think about all the crap that

Asians have developed many techniques to accommodate the strenuous activities that they are accustomed to in their native countries. This includes bending over to pick rice in rice patties, strengthening their arms to sell food to pedestrians, or just sitting back to enjoy the little things in life like eating bowls of rice. However, somewhere down the line, Asians figured that they couldn’t do all of these activities standing up for extended amounts of time. Hence, the Squat was born. After reading this article, you will know what the Asian squat is, where it comes from, and most importantly, why it’s effective.

accumulates when the cheeks are so close together (like in the American toilet). This way, Asians are able to be quite economical in their choice of toiletries. As Asians moved to other parts of the world and grew more refined in their mannerisms, they began to shift away from their use of the Asian Squat, calling it “mundane” and “unprofessional.” Modern science has proven the squat as an efficient posture that reduces pain on the patellar (knee) tendon. In addition, the Asian is now more balanced because their centre of gravity is above the feet, and the heels snugly contour the ground. For that reason, it has risen to prominence once more in only the last 200 years. The Asian Squat allows Asians to play poker without a table, eat without a table, and do pretty much everything without the need for man’s inventions. Without it, Asians would be even shorter than they already are (due to improper posture), hungrier, lonelier, poorer (tables cost money too), and most importantly, tired-er (yes, I added an ER to tired). It’s a craze that’s making its way across the pacific and Atlantic oceans. It’s an innovation. It’s a lifestyle. It’s the Asian Squat.

Written by Peter Nguyen for ‘Stuff Asian People Like’ source: www.asian-central.com/stuffasianpeoplelike/

Now, if you grew up in a ‘western environment’, you might not be familiar with the Asian Squat. This type of squat is more relaxing, because of the posture and point of gravity. So, bend those knees, and get to know the new way of relaxing your body (frequent excersise might be needed)

& how to do it the

Right Way...

1. Put your feet wider then you’re used to do with the ‘Western Squat’. 2. Make sure your heels are on the ground; this is the most important thing to do it the right way. 3. Don’t lean to much to the back, you will fall. Try to put your body weight forward.

Airport Transfers

If you’ve ever been to Bangladesh between monsoonal rain storms on one of those bargain basement tickets you can get in Kowloon and suffer yet another 45 minute, long haul transit stop you’ll appreciate that some airports can fall a little short of the mark. I’ve got nothing against Bangladeshis, especially in Kowloon, but Zia International in downtown Dhaka falls so short of every mark it’s actually, well, crap.

ow refreshing arriving in Bali is. Sure there are some decidedly spaghetti western gaucho types with comic book moustaches and too tight in the ass uniforms ready to pounce all over the wide eyed and spotty traveler, but they’re not the cold, two-headed-alien robotic unemotional freaks you get at most western travel hubs like Sydney’s Kingsford Smith. At least they smile if they see you as a business opportunity. In Sydney, it’s going to be cavity search time with industrial rubber gloves and a quart of Vaseline for making a comment about how the country’s forefathers were convicted felons and you didn’t know you needed a criminal record to get in these days.

opinion

public in England. “He was arrested for smiling with intent your honour. And he was wearing a loud shirt in a built up area. Serious crimes indeed! Especially when there’s absolutely sod all to be happy about in this green and pleasant land”. The very thought of pompous British types sends shivers down my spine, but I’m not there, I’m here. In Bali. And I can’t wait to check in and check my luxuriousness out.

At least they smile if they see you as a business opportunity

It’s this smiling thing. Staring blankly out of the protective window of my people wagon on the way from the airport to my luxury private one bedroom villa with private pool and 18 hour a day room service (that’s what the website said so it must be true right?), everyone seems to be either smiling or laughing. Not the sort of reaction I was expecting, but then I’m not sure what I was expecting really. Nothing? Everything? You’d be chased down the street by a screaming mob of Neanderthal peasants waving garden forks and freshly sacrificed bleeding chicken heads if you smile like that in

The Mag

My first drive through Kuta and Legian and into some really cool and trendy part of town called Seminyak (that’s the website blurb again) is a real mind bending trip of bizarre contrasts. The organized chaos of city streets seems insanely dangerous, which I guess it is, but maybe there’s some unwritten cosmic law that keeps some kind of order here. Maybe that’s why people smile a lot. They just know that they can be as mindless as they want, without any regard for other road users, and they’ll be alright. The cosmic law will keep me safe, for sure. I mean, how else do you rationalize the average family of half a dozen souls all squeezed onto a small moped with just two decidedly shoddy looking crash helmets between them and Dad isn’t even looking what’s coming down the road when he pulls out into traffic. Let’s hope he doesn’t start using his mobile phone at the same time.

Oh my god! He is!

My eyes are assaulted by an absurd display of signs for shops, banks, money changers, hotels, luxury private villas (hope mine is up to scratch), massage parlours and spas. And between them are small markets and side stalls bulging with the freshest of fresh looking vegetables, handicrafts and brightly coloured sarongs. This is awesome! People walk across the street with an indignant wave to fast approaching traffic as if they have some kind of superhero power in the slightest movement of an outstretched palm. I’m half expecting tight brightly coloured latex and not very clever masks. Coming through! And the traffic either slows down or stops! My driver is polite without being obnoxious. He asks where I am from, so I tell him. He asks how old I am and if I am married. Then he wants to know how many children I have and when I say I don’t have any he wants to know why not. Is

there something wrong with my loins? Maybe it’s because I need a local girlfriend. And funnily enough he can arrange that for me. Or maybe I would prefer a boy? No thanks mate. And guess what? He’s smiling! Even as mopeds overtake him on the inside. Even as some asshole goes through a red light and almost causes a CNN type of breaking news world event accident. We pull into the serene and cloistered environment of my luxury villa complex. How can this be so close to the chaos I’ve just driven through? It doesn’t make sense. It’s quiet and peaceful. It’s beautiful. A true garden of Eden feel with outrageously coloured bougainvillea bursting forth in heavenly showers splashed against verdant green palms. And there to greet me dressed in a figure hugging sarong is Venus’s sister. And she’s got that enigmatic, stunningly attractive smile thing going. It’s time for me to check in and start a new life.

The Mag • What’s Cooking? You might be familiar with the popular spots to eat out but some of the very best restaurants in Bali are hidden away. These restaurants are so good that people start to talk about them and in no time the word gets out and food lovers from all over the island will swarm the place and all of a sudden location doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Osteria Telese is that kind of place. It’s located on the famous Jl. Laksmana Oberoi but it’s way past the part that is densely populated with restaurants, if you’re coming from that area heading towards Petitenget, just keep going straight, pass Kudeta and it’s a few hundred meters on your right hand side. If you go there around dinner time you’ll see that it’s quite packed so the word about Osteria Telese is already out. Now, I agree with the fact that there are so many Italian restaurants around the Island. You have Cucina’s, Ristorante’s, Trattoria’s... They are everywhere! However, if you know anything about Italian food then you’ll know that although the basic pizzas and pastas will always exist on every Italian restaurants menu, it all depends on what part of Italy the chef or owner comes from because the ingredients and preparation of these dishes can vary to the extreme. Osteria Telese specializes in the cuisine of Naples (or Napoli in Italian), a charming city full of culture in southern Italy. The basics of this region are to cook with fresh ingredients, to keep it simple and to be patient. The antipasti from Naples is often pickled and served with olive oil and vinegar as the dressing. We had the honor of trying some of Osteria Telese’s antipasti. The ‘Sardine Alla Spagnola’ for instance; marinated sardine with olive oil and vinegar, now, it might not sound too mouth watering but it is a great starter as it is light, refreshing and yes, it is surprisingly super tasty. Same story with the ‘Carpaccio Di Tonno’, this tuna carpaccio is one of the best on the island, the tuna practically melts in your mouth and is perfectly partnered with olive oil, lemon and capers. Other recommended antipasti dishes are the ‘Crostone Di Napoli’ (slices of baguette with mozzarella, fresh basil, tomatoes and anchovies) and the ‘Melanzane Sott’ (pickled eggplant in olive oil) which Mikko, the owner, presented us with to ‘introduce us to Napoli’. I haven’t been there yet but I was enjoying it already! After the antipasti we had the pleasure of trying some of Mikko’s recommended Piatti’s. The ‘Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina’ (home made potato gnocchi with a very fresh tasting tomato sauce, accompanied with mozzarella and parmesan) was delicious. I claimed the Gnocchi while the others enjoyed ‘Linguine A Vongole’ (linguine with fresh clams) and the ‘Bistecca Alla Pizzaiola’ (sirloin with tomatoes, roast potatoes and spinach). As far as I could see they were quite happy with their dishes as well given that their plates were empty in no time. So there you have it. Our word is out. Go experience it for yourselves and see if you agree with us that if you put a bit of an effort into the trip your taste buds will be very happy you did, and if you do agree, then spread the word.

Venue at The Moon, I never really have understood the idea behind the name, maybe it’s the similar named ‘Villa Moon’ behind the restaurant that gave owner Melody inspiration for the name of her restaurant. However it may be, the venue and food served at almost ridiculous low prices are indeed ‘out of this world’! Venue at The Moon is a semi-open contemporary styled restaurant located directly next to the famed Bali Catering Company and right across from Warung Bonita on Jalan Petitenget very close to the acclaimed ‘Eat Street’ Jalan Laksmana (Oberoi Street). Last week Melody invited us over for what she called ‘a little food tasting’, well, I don’t like to call people liars, but she was! This food tasting was not little as promised: with about fifteen different dishes, this has been the most extensive review so far. And it was good folks! From Ravioli to Tuna Steaks and from Thai Beef Salad to miniature Beef Burgers – we had it all! For the normal weeknight that it was, the Venue had a nice crowd of both expatriates and tourists dining, drinking and conversing together like one big happy family, and to me that’s how a place like this should be! We haven’t tried it yet but I heard that the Friday Night Live Music at the Venue is quite happening so go on: have an amazing meal and enjoy the tunes at this happening restaurant on the extended Eat Street Jalan Petitenget!

ALBAR, JAKARTA

He brought his interest (or curiosity) into the next level that led him to the ‘body modification’ two years ago, when he had his tongue split into two (lizard-like tongue). “I had my friend split the tongue for me. He runs a body modification studio in Seattle, USA, and he was in Bali at the time. My friend was not equipped then. But since I was very determined, we were only using clam to cut off the tongue and ice cubes to dry up the blood,“ Albar told TM, adding that he has been wanting to have his tongue split for so long. Albar stated that he had an intention to have a pair of hornshaped silicon implanted on his forehead. “But my girlfriend, Patricia, doesn’t like that.”

It was in 2004 when this guy landed his feet in Bali, putting in a different color to the chic and exclusive scene of Seminyak area with his ‘bizarre culture’ and look. Growing up in the eastern Jakarta’s neighborhood full of fashion enthusiasts, Albar developed his ‘body art’ interest by having his left ear pierced when he was still on the first grade of junior high. The first piercing on the ear got him addicted that he went to magazines in search of ideas on which part he should have his body pierced next. Albar currently has around 30 piercings nestled on his body.

Patricia, however, is supportive towards Albar’s interest on body modification. “I’m totally cool with it, as long as not on the face. I think it’ll be cool if he has something on his back. You know, just like dinosaur,” she said. “It also doesn’t matter for me if he modify his arms. Just…not on the face, please,” Patricia said, while looking at Albar begging. Albar claimed that he is the only person not only in Bali but also in the entire Indonesia with a split tongue. “I’ve so far never met nor seen anyone else with a split tongue like mine. So yeah, I think I’m the only one.”

Aside from his daily activities as a piercer and a tattoo artist, Albar is at present also focusing on his band “The Last One” which launched its first album on Friday, June 13 in Padi Padi Restaurant & Lounge. “I’m the vocalist. We play punk, metal, ethnic, underground…pretty much eclectic. Just check us out.” To see and experience Albar does his magic on your body, visit his piercing and tattoo studio at Rabia (barudibali.com/rabia) on Jl. nknown to even some of its loyal visitors, Bali’s Nusa Dua offers more than just ranks of five-star hotels and up-market restaurants and shops. The thousands who stay in the luxurious hotels within the Nusa Dua complex and Tanjung Benoa are largely unaware of this white sandy beach located just five minutes away on the southern edge of the area: Geger beach. Accessed through a dirt track to the left on the road leading to the Nikko Bali Resort, Geger remains a very private beach, which makes topless sunbathing very popular here.

best weed in town!

Yet, the attraction in Geger is not just the private beach alone. It has been for many years since the locals firstly cultivated seaweed that up to today the seaweed plantation itself along Geger Beach has become a particular appeal even for the visiting sun worshippers. The Mag (TM) caught up with Mr. Wayan Repun, who has been cultivating seaweed in the area for five years now. He told TM that he goes to the sea to collect the seaweed twice on a daily basis, in the morning and in the afternoon. “But when I feel tired or don’t feel well I only go once in a day, either in the morning or in the afternoon.” With the presence of tourists around, he admitted that there were times when he felt very awkward when laying the wet seaweed under the sun. “They (the tourists) were watching me. I’ve never had so many eyes on me before. It feels strange and funny in a way,” he told TM. But the five-year practice seems to be working now, for Mr. Wayan has finally gotten used to be the center of attention and let those foreign eyes watching him. “The tourists are nice, they don’t disturb me at all.” Another seaweed farmer TM caught up with was Ms. Wayan Kecrit, who on her spare time (between 11AM and 4PM) offers a relaxing massage on the beach. “It’s a good business, you know…while waiting for the seaweed drying up. I could certainly use the extra cash,” she told TM, blushing. IDR 9k per one kilo of the dried seaweed seems to work well for Mr. Wayan and Ms. Wayan to support their families. When asked how many kilos of dried seaweed they can sell per day, the two Wayans (the Mr. and the Ms.) looked so all confused. “I don’t know, I can get IDR 80k in one day,” Wayan the mister said. Well Mr. Wayan, that would be around 9 kilos of dried seaweed per day. The dried seaweeds would then be delivered mainly to Jakarta to further be developed for pharmaceutical industries and processed food. A French couple visiting the area, Phillippe and Anne, told TM that the seaweed plantation adds another color to the scene and gives the touch of the traditional Bali and Indonesia. “Without the plantation we would feel like we are on some beach in Europe, because the situation here (in Geger) is pretty much the same as in Europe.” Watching the seaweed farmers doing their activities gives a different kind of pleasure as it illustrates the thick Bali’s marine aquaculture and its role for the locals in Geger area. If you are into photography, the scene would also worth a couple of great shots. To catch up with the farmers performing their things you should be around on the beach at eight to ten in the morning and four to six in the afternoon, at least that’s what Mr. Wayan told TM. Bali Through a Lens Pantai Geger, Just do it. Let me tell you about one of my favorite, if not “the favorite” place in Bali, Pantai Geger, a surprisingly beautiful, quiet and unspoiled corner in the mid of a much more tourist Nusa Dua. Pantai Geger is Bali at its best, a beautiful beach, calm and safe swim on high tide, kids dreamed pool on low tide, one of Bali’s best waves during the raining season and a unique landscape of green rows patiently tend by the hard working local community. I have enjoyed many hours watching the seaweed farmers, I’ve tried to understand, unsuccessfully, a flow of heavy seaweed loads perfectly balance in the farmers’ shoulders going up and down the beach, in and out the water. I have taken hundreds of pictures and I hope I have not disturbed much, I have relax and have fun while they have worked hard, paradise to me, hard daily living for them. As a little tribute I want to share this picture with you, Just do it… Jorge Monje

Neighbor from hell, part 3 Apart from several early posts, I have not said anything more about our neighbor from hell. It’s not a good practice to say on a public blog that one’s neighbor is a big fat idiot. However. Our neighbor is a big fat idiot. And possibly dangerous, as people with a single working neuron can be. This morning she came over to complain that our German shepherd was barking too loudly last night. Now, German shepherds are smart. Unlike Balinese dogs…unlike the several hundred or so Balinese dogs living and barking in a quarter mile radius of our village (to the Balinse, the barking of dogs is calming white noise)…German shepherds (at least ours) don’t bark at the moon, and they don’t bark at other dogs barking at the moon. In fact, when Kazu was barking last night, I went out to investigate. Guess who she was barking at? Our neighbor from hell’s mutt, who had trespassed into our garden. It finally took an hour to shoo her out.

... opinion

I pointed this out to her. I said that with several hundred dogs barking at night, what is one more? In fact, her dog yaps incessantly at every stray breeze. “But Balinese dogs go arf-arf,” she says, “and your German shepherd goes woofwoof. You shall stop it, please.”

Awesome Beaches

1 Soka

The line of beaches in Bali makes the island one of the most visited holiday destinations in the world. Each beach is different from the other, depending on what you’re looking for: a quite place to relax, surfing, sunbathing, you name it because Bali has it all! Here’s a quick guide on which beach to go to make your stay in Bali a lot more enjoyable. Here goes:

Soka beach is located in Tabanan regency, 10 km west on the traffic between Gilimanuk (the ferry port town that connects Bali and Java) and East Bali; thus, many buses stop in this area to cool their engines. Soka is also a popular hangout spot for the local younger generation to spend their weekend or for holiday sightseeing. You can also find wet rice fields close by, which adds another attraction to this small, black sandy beach.

3 Sanur

Sanur beach is a calm, quiet lagoon area offering great conditions for windsurfing, parasailing and other recreational activities. The calm waters of Sanur make it very popular as a family leisure destination. Sanur is also a well-known site to watch the sun rises as you jog along the white sandy beach. It is a perfect spot for non-surfer people.

42

The Mag

2

Geger Accessed through a dirt track to the left on the road leading to the Nikko Bali Resort, Geger remains a very private beach, which makes topless sunbathing very popular here. The seaweed plantation along Geger is another attraction of this beach, even for the visiting sun worshippers.

Geger attracts mainly European tourists and is a good place to bring kids as the water is safe to swim in – no waves or currents close by. The fact that the beach has fewer vendors makes the beach enjoyable for you to relax.

4

Dreamland Dreamland beach is really beautiful and its clear blue water looks very inviting. Nevertheless swimming is rather impossible due to the strong currents, yet you can still see some people staying in the water and play with the waves. To access the beach you have to pass a gate that leads to a private Villa Park and passed the Pecatu Graha developments. The high tide makes Dreamland an excellent playground for the experienced surfers. Dreamland Beach is crowded during the day and although the stretch of the beach is actually relatively short, you can still get the impression that the beach is a perfect, laid back hangout spot.

5 Lovina

Lovina beach is well known as an excellent site for sunset watching, snorkeling, and diving. Nightlife activities are also abound, as well as chartered boats to go out into the sea. If you like what Kuta offers but do not like the crowds, Lovina Beach is for you. Dolphin watching is Lovina’s main attraction, and thus visitors go there in June, July or August, when the weather is good and the waters are blue and clear.

Balangan

6

This hidden paradise is located north the Dreamland Beach; that would be before Dreamland if you’re coming from Kuta direction. Accessed through a small, long bumpy road, the spectacular view of this white sandy beach will swap away all the exhaustion caused from the long journey you’ve taken.

At low tide you can see the expansive reef that protects this oasis, offering hours of peaceful rest on the sand or just floating in one of its natural pools. Bring a pair of rubber shoes to avoid any sharp rocks. Balangan is perfect if you want to have a private time for it is very quite, especially during the weekdays. The Mag

continues ... Kuta

7

Kuta is the most celebrated beach in Bali. The beach area is also known as the center of nightlife activities and a shopping Mecca with its lines of shops, boutiques and galleries. The beach itself is regularly packed with sunbathers, masseurs and vendors. So you can always expect a big crowd in this area. Kuta is also a favorite site for surfing, although most of the surfers on this beach are beginners or those who are in the intermediate level. Sunset in Kuta is just magnificent.

8

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot, one of the most popular places of interest in Bali, is located in the Tabanan Regency. It is the home of a dramatic oceanfront Hindu temple, which is one of the main temples in the worship of Balinese Gods. The temple itself is built on a small peninsula, which is only accessible at low tide.

9

Nyanyi

‘Sunset Terrace’ is provided for a breathtaking view watching the sun setting down. A number of restaurants and gift shops are also available on the terrace, making your visit to Tanah Lot even more convenient and enjoyable.

Another black sandy beach situated around 10 minutes before Tanah Lot from Canggu direction, Nyanyi beach is very popular among the locals in the area, especially during the sunset when many youngsters play soccer. Nyanyi is very quiet all day up to around four o’clock in the afternoon.

STAY

HEALTHY :) Great, you have finally arrived in Bali! Got all your plans sorted out? You probably know that there are many things you could do here on your holiday. If you are here for the culture, look no further. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, its probably not far from where you are now. So, go and enjoy your selves, but remember to stay heathy. Here is some information to keep in mind and a few tips on how to keep your health during your holiday:

informational

Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is a kind of virus that is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito (the black tiger mosquito). During the raining season you have to be extra carefull because that is the time these mosquitoes breed. The symptoms of dengue are high fever, severe headache, backache, joint pains, nausea and vomiting, eye pain, and rash. (go to hospital if you have these symptoms). HOW TO AVOID: 1. AVOID any mosquitoes. 2. Put insect (mosquito) repellent lotion on your skin 3. Put mosquito coil in your or spray your room before you leave so when you’re back, it’s mosquito free! 4. Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially between 10AM 2PM and 4PM - 6PM (=that is when these guys are extra active)

a black tiger mosquito, recognizable by its black & white legs and body

Sounds all a bit scary but don’t worry too much. Dengue infections are rare, especially in tourist areas and your hotel probably smokes out their garden every few days to kill these mosquitos.

Bali Belly or Diarrhea

Running to the toilet every time can be a bit embarrassing and annoying. And next to that, the stomach cramps can be quite painful. Most diarrhea cases begin abruptly but will resolve in a few days without treatment. Make sure, when you’re suffering from diarrhea, that you drink enough liquids (i.e. water and juices, beers and liquors do not count guys!) to avoid dehydration. If the symptoms like nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, stomach cramps or fever continue for more than 3 days, seek some treatment. HOW TO AVOID: Drink purified water only. Avoid eating or drinking beverages from street vendors or other establishments where unhygienic conditions are present. Avoid eating raw or under cooked meat and seafood. Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables unless peeling before eating. But don’t let this information stop you trying new types of food during your holiday, but just remember to be careful.

Severe Sunburn or Heat Stroke

Its great when you go back to your home country and show of your exquisite brown tan. But be careful you don’t burn to much of that skin of yours or let your body litteraly get overheated. Now you might have already heard all the warnings about skin cancer and that you should protect your skin with sunscreen. Well, here we are, warning you again; buy sunscreen, wear a hat, limit the tanning sessions and try to stay out of the sun at least from 11AM till 3PM. A heat stroke is caused by dehydration or a overheated body. Avoiding a heat 48

The Mag

stroke is based on the same principals of avoiding a sunburn, plus, keep your body hydrated (again alcohol, tea or coffee don’t count) and be careful with vigorous physical activities in the sun. Symptoms of a heat stroke are: high body temperature, the absence of sweating (with hot red or flushed dry skin), rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, strange behavior, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizure or even a coma. HOW TO TREAT A HEAT STROKE VICTIM: In severe cases, get medical assistance immedeately. The important thing to achieve is to cool the victim. Get him or her in a shady place, remove the clothes and apply cool or tepid water to the skin. Get some ice packs and place them under the armpits and groins. Fan the victim to promote the cooling. Monitor the body temperature and continue the cooling efforts untill the temperature drops to 101/102 F (38.5 C).

Traffic Safety

We are not proud of the traffic conditions in Bali. Most local drivers are used to it, but for first timers in Bali, it can be a total different experience then back home. For them we recommend to take a taxi instead of renting a motorbike. More expensive? Yes. Safer? Absolutely.

Hotel Safety

Whether you are staying in a five star hotel or a youth hostel, do take care of slippery floors, the pool, stairs etcetera. There are many cases of broken bones, severe bruises, cuts, and some need serious treatment for it, such as an operation. Most of these cases happen to the senior tourist, where their bones aren’t as strong as they used to be. So take things easy and don’t rush. Better safe than sorry!

Water Safety

Be careful where you swim, some beaches have strong currents, sea urchins and sharp corals. Diving and surfing is fun, but it can also be dangerous. Many accidents happen from lack of concentration and under-estimating the danger of the sea. Major injuries or even death can happen during these activities. So always be extra cautious when you are having fun surfing, diving, or just plain swimming. Make sure to swim with a good swimmer, never swim alone, and only swim in safety zones (= between the red/yellow flags, a one-colored red flag means danger, do not swim there). As for swimming in general (including swimming at your hotel’s pool) make sure you warm up, to avoid any cramps during your swim.
