O ART & DESIGN PORTFOLI

DIVIDED WE FALL Style: Pictorial Modernism 1st place

VOTE LIKE A KANSAN Style: Art Nouveau 4th place

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Style: Digital Revolution

SOLUTION: With 2020 being an election year, I focused on encouraging everyone to get politically involved and work together to make this nation a better place. “Divided We Fall” shows the divide between the Republican and Democratic parties and how internal conflict is ripping our nation apart. “Vote Like a Kansan” encourages all Kansans to vote, using their brain, heart, and a bit of courage in choosing a candidate. Finally, “How Low Can You Go?” explains how politics has become a limbo match, with candidates from both sides stooping lower and lower competing for the favor of the public. Two of my posters placed 1st and 4th respectively in the ADP Poster Project Competition.

HISTORY OF GRAPHIC DESIGN, FALL 2020

CHALLENGE: Use historical poster design styles to address current political or social issues.

ADP POSTERS

AMERICAN DEMOCRACY PROJECT (ADP) POSTERS

POEM EXCERPTS: Morning Bliss:

Soaring in the night, Any restraints undone, Riding gusts of passion, Two shapes made into one.

Wedding Bells:

The midday sun hangs as Witness to our matrimony, A couple with sparkling Eyes and ambitions.

Pure Passion:

So this is what it means to love... To find the beauty in each day, And in each day’s end, In each other’s embrace.

SOLUTION: AgJournée (silver day) is a wine company based around looking for the silver linings in life and the simple joys of each day. This line focuses on an element of romance, great for sharing with a significant other. Each type of wine has its own poem silkscreened onto the back of the bottle, woven together to create a complete love story. From the morning after a one-night-stand, to a midday wedding, and finally ending in an evening in love, let AgJournée serenade you with its bold storytelling and even bolder flavor.

GRAPHIC DESIGN III, FALL 2020

CHALLENGE: Create a collection of wine bottles, bags, canisters, and boxes.

Notice the color gradiation, marking a change of scene or character perspective. Nelson Gray’s scenes are pink while Newby’s are blue.

SOLUTION: My title sequence is for an original noir story I created. Silhouette City: a place where shadows roam the streets, silhouetted citizens in an ever dark city. No one understands them; how or why they’re here or what they truly are. But for some, the shadows could answer secrets, despite being one themselves. They are born from mysteries, lies and deceit, from truths both sought and denied. One such secret, the death of a cop and the disappearance of his detective brother, lies hidden within the shadows. It’s a long-cold case only one man can solve: Jack Newby, former reporter for the Silhouette Gazette. He has a special connection with the shadows. They show him the past, replayed with him in the lead role. The cost: his sense of self. Will he find what he’s looking for or lose himself in the shadows? What’s the fate of the missing detetive? The answers await in darkness, to be discovered (and even influenced) by the reader in Silhouette City.

MOTION DESIGN, SPRING 2020

CHALLENGE: Animate a title sequence for a tv show or movie.

Conceptual Cover

Drop Cap Cover

SOLUTION (Conceptual Cover): The Conceptual cover resembles a ransom letter. This ties to when the Phantom kidnaps Christine and the many letters he writes to the opera house managers throughout the course of the story. The back of the conceptual cover depicts more of the Phantom's letters from the book and a summary as if written in the Le Monde newspaper.

SOLUTION (Drop Cap Cover): My Drop Cap cover represents the phantom's connection to music and his passionate side, hid away behind a mask and under the Paris Opera House. The flourishes on the P resemble the French fleur-de-lis. The back of the Drop Cap Cover symbolizes how the Phantom snaps, his heart broken by Christine, and reveals the skull beneath his mask. A quote from the book is depicted beneath the illustration: “He had a heart that could have held the entire empire of the world; and, in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar.” The red front represents love and passion and the black back despair.

TYPOGRAPHY, FALL 2019

CHALLENGE: Design one conceptual and one drop cap book cover. I chose The Phantom of the Opera.

BOOK JACKETS

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA BOOK JACKETS

SOLUTION: I created my game in Cinema 4D. The story: Arguing over which outdoor activity is best, some outdoor enthusiasts decided to settle the decision by racing to the peak. However, their little contest broke the one rule of the woods: never climb to the top of the mountain. The behemoth guardians dislike those who stand above them (and at the peak, anyone would be taller than the giants below). The behemoths were angered... and now they will need your help to make it down the mountain! In this adventurous twist on snakes and ladders, you travel around the rings, landing on signs to move down and out from the peak of the mountain and avoiding tree stumps and moving behemoth pieces. First to escape wins!

GRAPHIC DESIGN IV, SPRING 2021

CHALLENGE: Design an adventurous twist on the classic board game, Snakes and Ladders. Create a board, spinner, pieces, and instructions.

CHALLENGE: Work with a partner to create a non-profit event to help raise money for a cause. Adopt the style of a famous designer. SOLUTION: My partner, Perla Medina, and I decided to create a rodeo to help raise money for breast cancer research and support. Our sponsor for the event is the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Since this was for my History of Graphic Design class, one requirement was to base our designs on a famous designer's style. We chose Jessica Hische, a talented typographer who specializes in elegant hand-type and clean, simple cartoon characters. We created an identity, logo, banner, poster, and merchandise for the event, as well as a complete website using Wix (a free website creation site).

CHALLENGE: Design a soap brand and packaging, including 3 individual bars of soap (each with a different scent) and a 3-pack. SOLUTION: Originally sponsored by soap manufacturers, soap operas were popular during the 1940s and continue to entertain audiences today. With my brand, Soap Opera Products, these popular shows are paying it forward. Each box is themed around a different soap opera (which I made based on common soap opera tropes) and comes with a free collector’s card and code to unlock exclusive episodes. The front and back of each box resembles the front and back of a vintage radio. The top features a tuning dial and the company’s story. The sides of each box resemble old radio show advertisements.

BAR SOAPS
