Newly appointed Royal Thai Ambassador to Bahrain, His Excellency Sumate Chulajata, shares his vision for diplomatic cooperation, cultural exchange and economic collaboration in an exclusive interview with Kristian Harrison.
- His Excellency Sumate Chulajata
How has your experience in Bahrain been so far?
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here. My first impressions were the wonderful weather and the warmth of the Bahraini people. When I arrived in December, the Arabian Gulf Cup was underway, and I had the pleasure of watching the final match between Bahrain and Oman. Celebrating Bahrain’s victory with locals was a memorable introduction.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time, and how have you explored Bahraini culture?
I enjoy playing golf and football and love travelling. Bahrain has offered me the perfect opportunity to explore a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity. I’ve visited the Manama Souq, Bahrain Bay and Block 338. During Ramadan, I attended several Majlises and Iftar gatherings and even fasted myself to better understand and appreciate the culture.
How would you describe the current state of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Bahrain?
I consider myself lucky to serve in Bahrain, given our strong diplomatic history since 1977. The relationship thrives at both the royal and people-to-people levels. Nearly every Bahraini I meet has visited Thailand, and there’s deep admiration for Bahrain among Thais. I would describe Bahrain as a dear friend of Thailand in the Middle East.
How do you see these ties growing stronger during your tenure?
I see enormous potential in food security cooperation. Thailand has a robust food industry, while Bahrain is a key Middle Eastern hub. Our strengths are complementary. Additionally, we aim to expand cooperation in agriculture, trade, investment, public health and energy – all of which align with Bahrain’s Vision 2030 goals.
Are there any new trade or investment initiatives in the pipeline?
Bahrain is an important economic partner, and both governments are working on enhancing bilateral trade, possibly through a formal agreement. We see potential in boosting Thai exports, especially food and halal products, to Bahrain and the wider GCC. We’re also exploring Fintech collaboration and other investment ventures, particularly in wellness, tourism and agriculture.
What steps are being taken to enhance business partnerships, particularly in tourism, food exports and technology?
These are priority sectors for the Embassy. At the Bahrain International Garden Show 2025, we organised the Thai Pavilion with 16 entities showcasing innovations in food and agriculture. We also support private sector initiatives connecting businesses from both sides.
In tourism, we’re working on improving flight routes and promoting medical tourism. In food, Thai agri-food capabilities align with Bahrain’s food security agenda. For technology, Thailand’s digital growth and Bahrain’s regional tech leadership open doors for collaboration in Fintech and e-commerce.
Are there any upcoming initiatives to promote tourism between the two countries?
Thailand remains a top destination for Bahrainis for leisure, medical treatment and business. We’ve expanded visa-free travel for up to 60
days, and our global e-visa platform makes travel easier. We’re also promoting lesser-known destinations and wellness tourism.
We’re strengthening partnerships with Bahraini travel agencies and influencers. Last May, we held a business matching event linking 30 Thai hospitality businesses with over 100 Bahraini travel agencies to showcase Thailand’s rich tourism offerings.
What cultural exchange plans does the Thai Embassy have in Bahrain?
Cultural understanding is the foundation of strong relations. Promoting Thai culture is a national priority, and we’re planning several events, including the Thai Festival. This flagship event will feature performances, crafts and culinary highlights.
Culinary diplomacy is key too. We promote the ‘Thai Select’ label for restaurants maintaining high standards. We’re also fostering academic cooperation through exchange programmes, internships and visiting professors between Bahraini and Thai universities. These efforts aim to deepen mutual appreciation and people-topeople connections.
How large is the Thai community in Bahrain, and what roles do they typically hold?
Our community consists of around 3,000 people and continues to grow. Many have lived here for decades and are well-respected. Younger generations also bring valuable skills. Thai people are known for their hospitality, and many
work in hospitality and wellness – hotels, spas, restaurants and airlines. We also have professionals in engineering, construction and services.
The Embassy remains committed to supporting the Thai community through regular engagement and assistance, helping them feel connected to home.
What message would you like to share with both the Thai community and the Bahraini people?
I’m deeply grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received – it has made me feel at home. To the Thai community, thank you for strengthening our bilateral bonds. The Embassy is always here for you.
To the Bahraini people, I’m honoured to serve as Ambassador and build upon our shared friendship, one rooted not just in diplomacy but mutual respect and cultural understanding. I look forward to working with the government, businesses and communities to create new opportunities and deepen our ties even further.

In this issue, Bahrain This Month turns the spotlight on education –one of the most important decisions facing parents as they prepare for the upcoming academic year. With families across the Kingdom considering their options and thinking carefully about their children’s futures, we’ve taken the opportunity to explore the ever-evolving sector in Bahrain.
We’ve reached out to a wide range of schools across the Kingdom to find out what sets them apart and why they believe your child should be learning with them. From international institutions to home-grown centres of excellence, each one brings a unique vision and approach to nurturing young minds.
Education in Bahrain is changing, and fast. What was once a traditional, classroom-bound system is now evolving into something far more dynamic, thanks to the Kingdom’s growing investment in technology and innovation. With Vision 2030 as a guiding framework, Bahrain is working hard to ensure its students are not just keeping up with the world but staying ahead of it.
In recent years, schools across the country have embraced a digital shift. Coding, robotics and virtual learning are no longer niche subjects – they’re becoming part of everyday education. The push for this transformation gained serious momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the need for remote learning highlighted the importance of digital tools and flexible teaching methods. Now, that urgency has turned into long-term strategy.
The Ministry of Education has been central to these changes, teaming up with global tech partners and rolling out major initiatives like the Digital Empowerment in Education Project. From interactive smartboards to AI-assisted platforms, classrooms are becoming more connected, more responsive and, crucially, more engaging.
It’s not just schools feeling the shift. Universities and training institutes are also revamping their programmes to better match the demands of the modern workplace. Virtual reality labs, cloud-based coursework and even blockchain systems for secure certification are slowly becoming the norm. These developments are designed to give students the practical, future-ready skills they’ll need in a tech-driven world.
Furthermore, as the Kingdom continues to become a cultural melting pot, language centres such as Berlitz Bahrain are thriving as our community integrates on a deeper level.
In this month’s feature, we also explore how education in Bahrain is being reimagined for a new era. We look at the schools pioneering these changes, the technologies making a difference and the people working behind the scenes to prepare the next generation for a future we’re only beginning to understand.
AI is revolutionising education with personalised learning and automation, enhancing efficiency and accessibility. However, it raises concerns about ethics, data privacy and the future role of human teachers.
Artificial Intelligence has become a gamechanger in education, offering students and teachers new tools to enhance learning experiences. AI-powered platforms are revolutionising traditional teaching methods by making education more interactive, adaptive and personalised. While its benefits are undeniable, the increasing reliance on AI in schools also comes with challenges that must be carefully managed.
One of the most significant contributions of AI in education is personalised learning. AI-driven platforms use data analysis to understand each student’s strengths and weaknesses, creating customised learning paths. Adaptive learning software, such as AI-powered tutoring systems, adjusts lesson plans based on student performance, ensuring that learners progress at their own pace.
This approach is particularly beneficial for students who struggle with traditional classroom settings. AI can provide additional support to those who need extra help while allowing advanced students to move ahead without waiting for the rest of the class.
Programmes like Carnegie Learning and Squirrel AI use machine learning algorithms to enhance student engagement, making lessons more interactive and efficient.
Beyond the classroom, AI is streamlining administrative tasks, enabling educators to focus more on teaching. AI-powered tools can automate grading, schedule management and attendance tracking, reducing the time spent on paperwork. Chatbots and virtual assistants can also provide instant answers to student queries about assignments, deadlines and course materials.
This automation not only improves efficiency but also helps educational institutions optimise their resources. Teachers can dedicate more time to mentoring and interacting with students rather than managing repetitive tasks.
Despite its advantages, the rise of AI in education presents several challenges. Data privacy is a major concern, as AI systems rely on large amounts of student data to personalise learning experiences. Schools must implement strict data protection measures to prevent misuse of sensitive information.
Another concern is the potential decline in human interaction in education. While AI can provide excellent academic support, it lacks the emotional intelligence and mentorship that human teachers offer. Learning is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about developing social and emotional skills, which require personal guidance from educators.
AI is undoubtedly shaping the future of education, making learning more accessible and efficient. However, its role should complement rather than replace traditional teaching methods. A balanced approach – where AI supports teachers rather than substitutes them – will ensure that students benefit from both technological advancements and human mentorship.
As AI continues to evolve, its integration into education must be guided by ethical considerations, data security and a commitment to student well-being. When used responsibly, AI has the potential to revolutionise learning, making education more inclusive, engaging and effective for generations to come.
As The British School of Bahrain celebrates its 30th anniversary, Executive Headteacher Liz Stanley reflects on its enduring values, global impact and bold vision for the future of education.
This year marks a significant milestone for BSB as it celebrates 30 years of delivering worldclass education in the Kingdom. At the helm is Ms. Stanley, Executive Headteacher since 2024, whose forward-thinking leadership is already shaping the next chapter in the school’s story.
Ms. Stanley brings over two decades of experience to BSB, having led top-tier schools across the UK, UAE and Oman. She says: “I was drawn to BSB by its established excellence, global reputation and, most importantly, its warm, inclusive community. Leading such a dynamic and diverse school is a genuine privilege.”
Her impact has been immediate. Within her first year, Ms. Stanley launched a landmark campaign in partnership with UNICEF to provide access to education for 10,000 underprivileged children in Palestine, Senegal and India. She explains: “This initiative honours BSB’s journey by giving back. It reflects who we are – a community that leads with compassion and purpose.”
Innovation is central to her vision. The school is now integrating cutting-edge platforms like Inspired AI, the Inspired Metaverse and a global digital study platform, equipping students for a rapidly evolving world.
“We are not just celebrating the past,” Ms Stanley notes. “We are also preparing our students for a future that demands creativity, resilience and global awareness.”
BSB’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence continues to grow. In 2024, it was named one of the top 150 private schools globally and ranked in the top 15 in the Middle East. This success, however, goes beyond academic scores.
“We measure success by the whole child,” Ms. Stanley says. “Whether it’s our students winning international music competitions or excelling in global sports tournaments, we celebrate every achievement.”
Equally important is student wellbeing. BSB’s award-winning 360-degree approach ensures a supportive, low-stress environment. “We empower students to manage their own mental health,” she explains. “From peer mentoring and counselling to mental health ambassadors, our structures are proactive and inclusive.”
The school’s distinctive culture is also shaped by its strong parental and community engagement. “Our parents are true partners,” Ms. Stanley shares.
“From our Parent Ambassadors to the weekly BSB Playdate for toddlers, we foster a spirit of collaboration and belonging.”
With exciting developments on the horizon –including campus expansions, international scholarships and new university partnerships –BSB is poised to continue its leadership in global education.
Reflecting on her goals, Ms Stanley says: “I hope to leave a legacy of academic rigour, kindness and innovation. BSB is not just a school – it’s a launchpad for confident, creative leaders of tomorrow.
“I want to extend my gratitude to our dedicated staff, engaged parents and hardworking students. It is through our collective efforts that BSB remains a beacon of excellence in education. I look forward to seeing our students continue to thrive and make their mark on the world.”
As BSB looks to the next 30 years, it remains steadfast in its mission: nurturing excellence while preparing students to thrive lead and inspire in a changing world.

Principal Dr. Simon Watson shares how St Christopher’s School Bahrain is preparing for the future while maintaining its longstanding reputation for excellence.
Dr. Watson’s vision for St Christopher’s School Bahrain is clear: “We aim to be recognised as the leading school in the Middle East.” A crucial step in this plan is the 2026 opening of a new Senior School spanning 100,000 square metres, equipped with exceptional facilities. “This new Senior School, alongside our existing Primary campus in Saar, will further elevate our already enviable reputation in the region,” he says.
The school is also expanding its academic offerings, particularly in the Senior School. “We are diversifying our learning pathways, ensuring that students and parents have access to highquality education with a range of choices tailored to their needs,” Dr Watson adds.
Academic Excellence & Holistic Education
St Christopher’s prides itself on academic excellence. “We care deeply about each child and are committed to doing everything possible to support their learning journey,” says Dr. Watson. The school continuously evaluates its practices through internal reviews, external inspections and engagement with educational research.
Beyond academics, the award-winning Future Ready Curriculum ensures students are equipped with vital life skills. “It integrates metacognition, global impact, entrepreneurship, digital literacy and well-being,” Dr Watson explains. Real-world learning experiences foster confidence and adaptability in students.
Extracurricular activities play a significant role in shaping students. “We offer a vast array of opportunities across music, drama and sports, enabling every student to find an area of interest,” he says. The school encourages both participation and success to ensure a wellrounded education.
Inclusivity remains a key focus. “One of our core values is mutual respect, a principle that is evident the moment you enter our school,” Dr Watson says. “Students from diverse backgrounds feel valued and supported within this environment.”
The school embraces technology in education while ensuring traditional methods remain relevant. “Our approach to technology is centred on using the best strategies for learning –whether that involves digital tools or pen-andpaper methods,” Dr Watson explains. The Head of Digital Learning ensures that AI and other emerging technologies enhance education rather than replace essential skills.
Parental involvement is key to student success. “When parents actively engage in their child’s education, students are more likely to thrive,” Dr Watson notes. Initiatives such as parent workshops, classroom visits, the Festive Fayre and Iftar in the Park help foster strong schoolcommunity relationships.
Mental health is a top priority. The school uses Komodo, a well-being monitoring system, alongside a no-mobile-phone policy to keep students engaged. “Our teachers have strong relationships with students and can recognise when additional support is needed,” says Dr Watson.
Reflecting on his career, Dr Watson credits his maths teacher for inspiring his passion for education. “Like many teachers, I was inspired by an exceptional educator whose love of teaching ignited my own passion for education,” he shares. “Leading St Christopher’s has been rewarding, particularly spearheading the New Senior School project, a lasting legacy for the wider community in Bahrain.”
Muhammed Izaan, a 10-year-old prodigy from Bahrain, is stunning the art scene with incredible mosaic portraits made from a simple toy … the iconic Rubik’s Cube.
A student at Capital School Bahrain, Muhammed is captivating audiences by turning a childhood passion into an impressive craft, creating intricate portraits using hundreds of cubes.
Muhammed’s love for the Rubik’s Cube began early. “I started solving cubes when I was just four years old,” he explains. “From that moment, it became an exciting challenge and passion.” Over the years, he has mastered multiple variations of the puzzle, including shape-shifting and gear cubes. However, his fascination with mosaic art took his skills to another level.
“The inspiration to create Rubik’s Cube portraits came from international cubers,” he says. “I saw people making detailed portraits with cubes, and I thought, ‘Why not give it a try myself?’” With 500 cubes at his disposal, Muhammed carefully plans each design by pixelating images and solving cubes to fit the pattern.
Each portrait takes between 90 to 120 minutes to complete. While the process is enjoyable, certain details require extra attention. “The most challenging part is working on facial features, especially the eyes. The colours have to be placed precisely to get the right look,” he explains.
His first large-scale portrait was of Harry Potter, a character he admires. “I love reading and Harry Potter is one of my favourites. Seeing my first big portrait come together was an exciting moment.”
Since then, Muhammed has created over 30 portraits of renowned personalities, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Amitabh Bachchan and Mr. Bean. He has showcased his work at various events, from Dana Mall to Thai Mart, often drawing large crowds. “Creating art in front of a live audience is exciting,” he beams. “People come up to me, take pictures and congratulate me. It’s a great feeling!”
One of his proudest moments was an event where he presented a portrait of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. “Bahrain MP Dr Maryam Al Aldhain personally congratulated me. That recognition meant a lot,” he reminisces. “Another highlight was receiving a personal message from an Indian movie star after completing his portrait. It was a huge surprise and motivated me even more.”
Muhammed’s ambitions extend beyond his current work. “I want to create a massive artwork using 3000 to 4000 cubes, and maybe even attempt a world record. I’m also exploring smaller portraits with micro cubes as gifts.”
For those looking to try Rubik’s Cube art, Muhammed advises: “First, master the 3x3 cube. Once you’re confident, start experimenting with colours and patterns. It takes patience, but it’s worth it.”
Grateful for his parents’ unwavering support, Muhammed remains focused on expanding his craft. “This journey has been incredible. I’ve met inspiring people, broken records and discovered so many opportunities. I’m excited to see where this takes me next.”

In this month’s tea-infused mocktail, we showcase Dilmah’s Royal Treatment, a drink infused with elegance and a touch of the exotic, the Royal Treatment is a refined beverage that blends bold flavour with delicate aromas. Perfect for a sophisticated afternoon or as a signature welcome drink, it offers a vibrant twist that is both refreshing and fragrant.
At its core, the drink balances the tart sweetness of raspberry with the warm, spiced depth of cinnamon. These notes are softened and elevated by the floral, soothing character of jasmineinfused green tea. The result is a beautifully layered beverage that feels both luxurious and revitalising.
Ideal for social gatherings or simply enjoying a quiet moment of indulgence, the Royal Treatment offers a visually pleasing presentation too. Finished with a cinnamon stick and fresh mint sprigs, it is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the palate.

• 25ml Giffard Cinnamon
• 125ml Green Tea with Jasmine

Launched in 2015, it is the region’s leading e-commerce platform dedicated to selling plants and gardening products, serving both individual and corporate customers. From indoor plants to gardening tools, the platform is integrating greenery into everyday life.
Mohammed Fayaz, Business Development Manager at PlantShop.me, had a vision to make plants accessible to all. He says: “Bahrain has a strong commitment to green sustainability and
In a region embracing sustainable living, PlantShop.me is transforming plant shopping across Bahrain through tech innovation, corporate partnerships and an unwavering commitment to greener urban environments.
selection but in its user-friendly interface. It serves as more than a marketplace, offering expert advice, gardening tips and a space for plant enthusiasts to connect and grow.
PlantShop.me has also established itself as a reliable partner for businesses across Bahrain. Its corporate clientele includes 500 Falcons, Flat6 Labs, Startup Bahrain, Kingdom Projects, Standard Chartered Bank, Downtown Rotana, Velas Restaurant, Bosporus Restaurant, Omicron, Petal and Beans, Taj Hotel, Baker & Spice Bahrain, Nexel Computer and Sun & Sand City Centre.
The company provides tailored B2B services including:
Plant maintenance contracts – ensuring greenery in corporate spaces is wellmaintained.
Office plant sourcing – helping companies choose the right plants for their interiors.
With rising awareness around wellness at work, more companies are turning to greenery to improve air quality and employee morale.
Unlike businesses that merely capitalise on the green trend, PlantShop.me is rooted in sustainability. Mr. Fayaz says: “Going green requires a long-term commitment. It’s not just about selling plants; it’s about fostering an ecosystem where sustainability is second nature.”
Aligned with Bahrain’s broader sustainability goals, the company aims to reduce urban heat and promote green living. Inspired by the Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is today,” its mission is forward-looking.
With tech-driven solutions like AR-based plant visualisation and a new mobile app, PlantShop.me is paving the way for smart, sustainable shopping. As it grows, its vision remains clear – to make every space in Bahrain a little greener.
Bahraini motorcycle racer Ali Adiby tells Kristian Harrison about his determination to realise his dream of being the first Arab to compete at the prestigious Manx GP on the Isle of Man, the gateway to the iconic TT races.
Ali’s fascination with motorcycles ignited at just 10 years old, despite his parents’ apprehensions about the dangers involved. He was captivated by the roar of engines and the thrill of speed. But convincing his family was another matter.
“My parents always said it was too dangerous,” says Ali. “So I used to go to internet cafés just to download MotoGP pictures. I’d stare at them for hours and imagine myself riding the bikes.” Eventually, he bought his first motorbike in secret. “One day my parents came home and saw it. They were shocked,” he laughs. “But that’s where it all started.”
He began riding dirt bikes, then shifted his focus
towards becoming a professional. A call to the Bahrain Motorcycle Club (BMC) opened the door. “They told me they couldn’t provide a bike, but they’d support travel and logistics if I brought my own,” he recalls.
His first ever race, in Qatar in 2012, was a revelation. “I beat experienced Bahraini riders, some with years more experience than me,” says Ali. “People started saying I had real ability.”
His progression continued. In one rainsoaked international race, half the riders crashed, but he managed to finish in the top 10 – a major breakthrough.
Though setbacks followed, including crashes and financial difficulties, his determination never wavered. By 2015, he was back with a new bike and a new focus. A sponsorship from the Qatar Federation followed, complete with a Spanish mechanic and a fully prepared bike.
and is now trying to get more race experience under his belt, with the possibility of traveling to next.
“I was finally just a rider. I showed up, got on the bike and raced. It was a dream,” he says. That year, he won Rookie of the Year and multiple podiums in the Qatar Championship. Since 2016, Ali has competed in the Bahrain Motorcycle Championships, frequently reaching the podium and securing first place among competitors from various nationalities. His most recent achievement was winning the 2024 championship.
Now 36, Ali is pursuing his most ambitious goal yet: qualifying for the Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man – the gateway to the world-famous
“It’s not just a race. It’s a piece of history,” he says. “If I make it, I’ll be the first Arab rider ever to compete there. That would mean everything to me.”
Despite his accolades, one challenge remains: consistent support. “People don’t realise how much this sport costs – bikes, travel, maintenance, gear,” says Ali. He’s hopeful that with a little backing, he can make his mark not just for himself, but for Bahrain.
“I want to create history for Bahrain and the Arab world,” he says.
“Not just to race, but to inspire others –to show it can be done.”
Shi7ehlo is a celebration of Arab identity, culture and craftsmanship, bringing handmade creations to the forefront of Bahraini fashion. Its owner, Shahrazad Aljallad, tells us more about the brand’s uniqueness and authenticity.
“To me, clothing is not just a necessity but a creative display of feelings, memories and resilience,” says Shahrazad. Through this concept space, Shi7ehlo showcases an assemblage of unique, handmade pieces from across the Arab region.
The curation process is a delicate blend of collaboration and craftsmanship. “I work with consignments locally and across borders, bringing together Shi7ehlo capsule collections made in Tunis,” Shahrazad explains. “The aim is to offer exclusivity through a fusion of sharing, inspiring and blending. It’s in our uniqueness that we are able to offer something truly special.”
Bahrain’s creative talent is deeply rooted
“Bahrain is a fusion of old and new in every aspect,” she asserts. “It’s vital to utilise this diversity in every domain. By introducing collections that embody these values, Shi7ehlo remains a platform that celebrates self-appreciation and cultural pride.”
Reflecting on the future of fashion trends, Shahrazad emphasises the importance of authenticity over fads. “We have been conditioned to accept fast fashion as the best, but true empowerment lies in choosing quality over quantity.
“So ladies, dress to express, not to impress!”

Kristian Harrison takes the wheel of the 2025 Bentley Continental GT Speed First Edition, experiencing a rare blend of luxury, power and craftsmanship.
Let’s get one thing straight from the start, this motor is the most mesmerising machine I’ve had the pleasure of laying eyes on. Seriously, if cars could flirt, this one was basically giving me smouldering winks from across the car park. That dazzling Candy Red looking like liquid metal laced with rubies was as close to my favourite car colour ever.
Once I collected my jaw from the floor and slid into the plush interior (Pillar Box Red and Beluga hide, thank you very much), you’re met with the kind of comfort that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with anything less. It’s got the full First Edition treatment – think Mulliner detailing, precision diamond quilting, Dinamica headliner – the works. The seats not only cosset but perform actual magic tricks on your posture, thanks to the Front Seat Comfort Spec and wellness features.
And then there’s that screen.
You push the start button and boom – the Bentley Rotating Display flips like something out of a Bond film. One moment, you’re looking at an elegant panel of veneer, the next a 12.3-inch touchscreen whirs into view. Or, if you’re feeling discreet, hit the ‘Screen’ button and it flips again to reveal a trio of analogue dials – a gentle reminder that while the tech is cutting edge, this Bentley hasn’t forgotten its classic roots.
But let’s talk performance, shall we? Under the sculpted bonnet lies an Ultra-Performance Hybrid Powertrain that combines the V8 power you know with an unprecedented boost of torque from its electric motor to deliver truly astonishing performance: 1,000Nm of torque and 771bhp, delivering 0-100kmph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 335 kmph. That’s not ‘quick for a Bentley’, that’s just quick, full stop. And thanks to the carbon ceramic brakes, it stops as confidently as it goes.
The sound? Glorious. That deep, baritone growl becomes a snarling crescendo as the revs climb – a guaranteed way to raise the pulse, particularly of unsuspecting passengers.
keeps things composed yet engaging, especially when you switch it into Sport mode. The car seems to shrink around you as you open it up on the highway with a grin plastered across your face. And yet, when you dial it back while weaving through the tighter city streets, it glides like a magic carpet.
There are faster cars, flashier cars, maybe even more technologically complex ones. But none blend opulence, performance and presence quite like this. The Continental GT Speed First Edition isn’t just about driving – it’s about arriving, in every sense of the word.

Managing money effectively is about more than just saving –it’s about balance. This month, Pria Masson explores how to cultivate mindful financial habits, set meaningful goals and maintain a healthy relationship with money.
In my previous column, I urged you to look at where you sit on the spending-saving scale and to notice your patterns. This month let’s talk about how to get to wherever you want to be in relation to spending and saving.
Irrespective of your financial situation, we all interact with money and very few of us have a healthy interaction. By that I mean, very few people are satisfied with their level of savings or their quality of expenditures. But how does one get to a place where there is more contentment in relation to money? The answer lies in an old mantra – habits and consistency pave the path to change. So, let’s hack your money mindset this month.
Goals are for everyone
If you are a person who says I don’t have a financial goal or I don’t want to set one, and, if that is true, this article would not have caught your eye. So, since you’re here, goals are for you.
You very likely have some unmet financial need and to be on a healthy financial path, a goal is non-negotiable. Acknowledge the need, set the goal.
Companies usually have quarterly budget meetings. We all know the reason why – to take stock of where plans and reality sit and to take measures to get things to be where they need to be. Treat your personal finances with the same respect. Plan and keep checking in on the plan just like you would for other personal rituals such as making sure you check in with a doctor, getting your car checked regularly etc. That doesn’t mean you live life like a company – it means you factor in the main stuff that you know, account for some overheads and then keep a track to make sure you’re not too far from your goal.
We all have electricity, rent, etc. to be paid, and like we all know, there are non-negotiable expenses. Most of us use credit cards to make many of these expenses. Overdue charges on these credit card bills are in the range of 2 percent on an average. Don’t let the small number fool you because it translates to a whopping ~26 percent annually. You may change your mind. So, how do you make sure you do not allow an overdue snowball to form? Simple hack – automate credit card bill payments if you’re using credit cards for the points you earn and convenience. Set up specific payments if you’re using them to pay for things you do not have money for. Automate as much as possible so that you have no decisions to make when bills are due, and you can plan appropriately.
Anything in excess, even seemingly good things, can sometimes set us on an unhealthy path. We all need a little bit of crazy in our lives. So, while you can use the many apps available to watch your spending, while you can track and plan judiciously, don’t forget that you have a life to live – and money pays for that life. Save as you need to but spend as you need to as well. When the two are in balance, you will likely experience limited guilt and interact with money for what it is – a means to the many options of living a wholesome life. Remember: Mindful spending, prudent saving.

Indulge
In his monthly series for Bahrain This Month, Bill Grieve casts his civic lens on areas of concern, offering an enlightening and engaging perspective on various issues affecting life in the Kingdom.
Smoking in residential apartments is not just a personal choice; it’s a public health issue that affects everyone in the building. In a densely populated country like Bahrain, where apartment living is common, secondhand smoke infiltrating homes poses serious health risks to nonsmokers, particularly children, pregnant women and the elderly.
Despite Bahrain’s progressive tobacco control laws, there is still no legal framework prohibiting smoking inside residential buildings. With growing awareness of secondhand smoke dangers and the global movement towards healthier living, Bahrain needs to consider updating its laws to include smoke-free apartment policies. Such a step would protect residents, reduce fire hazards, improve air quality and align the country’s regulations with international public health standards.
Secondhand smoke is a silent killer. Studies have proven that exposure to tobacco smoke can cause respiratory diseases, heart conditions and even cancer in non-smokers. In apartments, smoke travels through the ventilation systems, walls and open windows, making it impossible for non-smokers to avoid it and its rancid acrid stench.
Children are particularly vulnerable, as their developing lungs make them more susceptible to asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory issues triggered by smoke. Similarly, elderly residents and individuals with pre-existing health conditions face heightened risks. Enforcing a smoking ban in apartments would significantly reduce these dangers, ensuring safer and healthier living spaces for all.
Beyond health concerns, indoor smoking leaves lasting environmental damage. The residue from cigarette smoke – often referred to as third-hand smoke – clings to walls, furniture and carpets for months, creating a persistent toxic environment. This not only makes apartments less hygienic but also increases maintenance costs for landlords and tenants alike.
Smoking is a leading cause of residential fires, often resulting from improperly discarded cigarette butts. Fires in apartment buildings spread rapidly, endangering lives and causing significant property damage. A ban on indoor smoking would drastically lower the risk of such incidents, making residential complexes safer.
Bahrain has made notable progress in tobacco control through Law No. 8 of 2009, which prohibits smoking in public places, healthcare facilities and educational institutions. The law also enforces strict advertising regulations and tobacco taxation to discourage smoking. However, residential apartment buildings remain a legal grey area, leaving non-smokers unprotected from involuntary smoke exposure.
Extending these laws to include multi-unit housing would be a logical and necessary step in Bahrain’s journey toward a healthier society. Other countries have already implemented similar policies, demonstrating their effectiveness.
Several nations have successfully introduced smoke-free residential regulations, including:
• United States
• Canada
• Europe
We can learn from these examples and implement similar measures to protect residents.
The demand for smoke-free housing is growing globally, and Bahrain is no exception. Many residents prefer to live in buildings where they are not exposed to harmful smoke, and surveys worldwide indicate that tenants are even willing to pay higher rents for smoke-free environments.
Landlords and property developers can benefit by adopting smoke-free policies, as such buildings often attract more tenants, retain value better and have lower maintenance costs. Implementing and enforcing smokefree regulations would be a win-win for all stakeholders.
The case for smoke-free residential policies is undeniable. Secondhand smoke in apartments endangers lives, increases fire risks and contributes to environmental pollution.
The Health Regulator, property owners and residents are encouraged to come together to advocate for smoke-free apartments. By refreshing, modernising and enforcing tobacco laws, we can take a decisive step towards a healthier, safer future for all.
