MESSAGE FROM HIS EXCELLENCY

Mr. John E. Beale

Ambassador of Barbados to the United States of America and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States on the occasion of the 49th Anniversary of Independence of Barbados

I welcome this opportunity, on behalf of the Embassy of Barbados in Washington, D.C., to extend warm greetings to the members and supporters of the Southern California Health and Education Inc. as you celebrate the 49th Anniversary of lndependence of Barbados. I congratulate you as you host the Annual Independence Dinner/Dance and Awards Banquet, testament to your ongoing commitment to Barbados and to the Barbadian community in your area. I also extend congratulations to this year's scholarship and community recipients whom I am sure have worked very hard and are deserving of the awards. Each year your Association continues to make a valuable contribution to Barbados and in this regard, I am happy to pay respect to the President Mr. Martin Greenidge, the Committee and to all those who have served. Your efforts to improve the physical wellbeing of the community by hosting two health fairs are also recognized and duly applauded, especially given the high incidence of non-communicable diseases among our nationals . The support shown to the Special Olympians from Barbados during the 2015 Los Angeles Special Olympics World Games and the assistance given to the director and cast of the Barbadian film Vigilante - The Crossing when they traveled to Hollywood for the historic showing of the film are also to be commended. It is very pleasing to the Government of Barbados that Barbadians overseas continue to feel close bonds to their homeland and strive to reflect in their adopted countries the pride and industry that characterize our people . You the members of the Southern California Health and Education Inc. are flying the flag of Barbados high in Southern California through your ongoing contribution to your community and to our beloved Barbados. I exhort you to continue to serve. As I close, I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Independence Day, as we reflect on our rich heritage, giving thanks to the Lord who has been our guide.

MESSAGE FROM SCHE PRESIDENT

Mr. Martin Greendige I am deeply honored to greet you again this year as we celebrate this 49th year of Barbados' Independence. Not so many years ago we took the leap of faith and ventured out on our own. Those years have done us well. Amidst the struggle and difficult times we have maintained a slow but steady progress. We have kept our forefathers torch burning, not so much for ourselves, but for the many to follow us. No matter what issues we face in our daily lives, this time of year is very special to us as a people. This is the time when we renew that love, friendship and community and celebrate with each other no matter where our journey finds us. The gifts that we were blessed with as Barbadians allows us to make every thing and every one around us better no matter where we are. As we celebrate our independence let us do so in a manner that will encourage, inspire and promote true love to every one around us. Let our lights so shine that our presence will warrant imitating, we are not in Barbados now, but Barbados is still in us therefore lets show our friends how we do it. Thanks for your support and your continuous generosity towards this organization. Every time you give to us we are able to give even more to those less fortunate. We are fortunate to have two reasons to enjoy and feel proud, thanksgiving and our independence. Live them to the fullest, share and spread the joy and continue the spirit through the Christmas season. May the grace of God bless you and your families as you continue to share with others.

Martin Greendige President

MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES

April Sutton

April Sutton is an award-winning Television Broadcast Pioneer in Hollywood. She became the youngest Inductee in the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1993 for her outstanding television reports on Black Entertainment Television (B.E.T.) Network.

More than 40 million TV viewers have watched her entertainment reports covering the Oscar Awards, Grammy Music Awards, Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, American Music Awards, Hollywood Movie Premieres, and RedCarpet gala events. The Ohio native became the first hired Hollywood on-air talent for B.E.T., as the "Face of Hollywood" for 10 years, which sealed her name as part of BET's early history. Her status as a Hollywood Socialite and popular TV Host soon opened new career opportunities. In 1996 she became a contributing West Coast Television Correspondent for the Geraldo Show (CBS), covering the O.J. Simpson case, the Princess Diana story, the Ennis Cosby story, the Tupac Shakur story, Hollywood movie premieres and Red-carpet gala events. Ms. Sutton has received many honors for her television work in Hollywood as the Producer and Host of the "April in Hollywood" Show, which has aired on the Time Warner Cable Television Channel. Additionally, the City of Los Angeles presented special proclamations to her, along with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, City of Compton, City of Lynwood, and top recognitions from many civic and community organizations. In addition to her many achievements, Ms. Sutton is a committed advocate of Tanzania. She has sent countless numbers of boxes of brand new tennis shoes to children in Tanzania, and has worked tirelessly, developing projects which bridges the gap between top celebrities and Tanzania. Last year, she produced a video titled: "Hollywood to Tanzania" featuring celebrities giving greetings to the people of Tanzania. Her cultural and artistic campaigns have also successfully attracted entertainers who have written messages to the citizens of Tanzania, which was given to the country for a special museum exhibit. This year, her work continues as the Founder of the Diversi-Tea Celebration. The evening gala recognizes Union Day in Hollywood. She has observed the United Nations General Assembly, where World Leaders including Presidents, Kings, Prime Ministers, and Foreign Ministers speak in front of an international audience about global issues. Her attendance at international summits, and leadership forums, keeps her current on topics discussed by participating Diplomats. She will always be known as the first hired Hollywood based Television Personality on the first Black Television Network in American history, but she remains clear on the importance of her global efforts. She states, "I am certainly linked to B.E.T. and the public never hesitates to remind me that I had a major role as the first "Face of Hollywood" for the network, but my television career also gave me a broad range of international interests." She adds, "I felt compelled to develop artistic, cultural, and media initiatives for Africa, which have been successful because of the willingness of celebrities and community supporters, who like myself, see the importance of connecting with global citizens." Currently residing in Los Angeles, Ms. Sutton is single, and conducts workshops for youth and college students across the country. She holds a Masters Degree in Television Communications from Kent State University, and a B.A. Degree in Speech Communications.

SCHE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Rhema Francis

As a direct result of who I am and the environment I was raised in, I have set goals in place and am determined to live my life knowing I have fulfilled the purpose God placed within me. I believe that part of finding my true purpose is to continuously explore the talents that God has gifted me with. Ultimately, I desire to use my intelligence and gifts to build something tangible for future generations. In this essay, I will attempt to provide a basis of my foundation, share my specific goals and discuss the paths required to help meet my expectations. For the most part, I grew up in a single-parented household. I lived with my mother who managed to care for me and my siblings while completing her master’s degree. With that example before me, I learned how to celebrate life in increments and to remain focused on long term goals. My childhood included living in multiple states and I believe that exposed me to different cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds and subsequently gave me insights and broader perspectives. As a result, I am confident in who I am, inner motivated and believe that I easily relate to others. I initially came into college as an exercise science major to become a physical therapist. I chose this profession because science interests me, and I found it be an area where I could see myself excelling. However, after going through months of rehabilitation due to extensive injuries playing sports, my course of action has changed. It changed due to self-evaluations of ensuring I was on the right path. I began asking myself why I should be the person that helps people back to health when I can be the person that fixes them in the first place. I discovered a deeper passion and commitment and now desire to study medicine; with the hopes of becoming a surgeon. The idea that I will someday have the ability to save someone’s life absolutely intrigues me. I believe that this is my sense of calling. I feel I have the ambition to take me there and have great success. Strategy involves many internships and programs to make myself more competitive when I apply for medical school. At this point, I am not sure what type of surgeon I will be, but I am sure that by learning at a school with many great minds I will find inspiration. I believe my mother worked too hard for me not to be great. Her efforts were truly inspirational and it has shaped me into the woman I am today. It has motivated me to keep grinding, keep pushing and to keep challenging for the things that I want in my life. I believe that there is no place for average, only greatness. Working hard with utter determination will open doors for me that will benefit my life. Praying to God and having faith in my life will also provide me the opportunities that He has in store for me.

SCHE SCHOLASTIC OUTREACH

Araceli Salazar

Dear Scholarship Committee,

Thank you very much for the honor of being considered for your generous scholarship that will surely impact our fourth grade students at Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Long Beach. Currently, Lee Elementary is a title 1 school, because of our high number of children from low socio-economic families. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. There are a total of about 1,000 students enrolled in our school with 140 students in fourth grade. There are four fourth grade teachers with 35 students in each class. Needless to say, our students face many challenges that impact their learning every day. One major challenge we face daily is accessing rich reading materials. With new Common Core Standards, quality literature is needed to inspire and motivated students to learn with the use of Close reading and collaborative discussions. For this reason, we have been purchasing classroom book sets with our own money to use in our classroom but with so many students the cost is very high. Exchanging and sharing a small number of books among the four fourth grade classes is also a very difficult task. Another challenge we have at our school is funding educational fieldtrips, because of rising bus fares and admission costs. These fieldtrips help students with first hand learning opportunities that are needed to inspire students and help them make real life connections with their learning. With the scholarship money, we would like to purchase quality literature book classroom sets to help support the new demanding Common Core Standards that require students to do close readings and hold collaborative discussions for higher order thinking. These classroom sets would benefit four classrooms with 35 students each. If possible, we’d also like to use a remaining part of the scholarship for an educational fieldtrip that would benefit our students’ education. Thank you very much for your generosity, your help will directly influence the learning of many students and will help us teachers enrich our students’ learning while motivating and encouraging them along the way. With gratitude, Arcelia Salazar & 4th grade level team
