Woodland Wonders Susan Ashmun I ran across this enormous ivy growing up a tree when we were doing some clearing. (Unbelievably, the Olmsteds planted 1100 Hedera ivy here in 1917) It was calling out to be used in a new way with its beautiful fuzzy climbing roots still attached. I gathered other woodland plants to make an arrangement.

After years of zonal denial failure, this beauty spent the winter in a friend’s rustic greenhouse and emerged happy. Rose Suzette de Turenne Rosa ‘Just Joey’ hybrid tea is a favorite although not considered the best form for a hybrid tea because its petals are more loose and relaxed. If grown mostly in the sun, the color will be paler – in partial shade, more intense, but might not be as floriferous.

I received this Ponytail Palm as a gift when the caudex was the size of a marble, over 40 years ago. I have always wanted to show it, but because of its size and weight that hasn’t been possible- it takes four grown men to just transplant or move it. That is why I am delighted to enter it into this virtual show…and also show a photo of its amazing bloom. It has bloomed twice, so far, which is supposedly unusual in this climate, as this plant is a native of Mexico. As you can see it likes living in my dining room where it gets plenty of light.

(Buckwheat); Sambucus racemosa (Red elderberry); Antennaria margaritacea (Pearly everlasting); Spirea betulifolia (birchleaf spirea).

These are probably the “ugly ducklings” of the wildflowers currently blooming, but worth celebrating anyway. I’m particulaly happy to have the Birchleaf spirea, a hardy native, filling in the banks near our main house.

Baird Board 3 contains: Sedum stenopetalum (Wormleaf stonecrop); Rosa gymnocarpa (Baldhip rose); Penstemon procerus (Small Flowered penstemon); Rosa nutkana (Nootka rose(; and Castilleja hispida (Harsh paintbrush). The Nookta rose is highly fragrant. The paintbrush is found in many shades of red, orange and yellow.
