PICKS You know, the book enthusiast in me absolutely adores a great read. During my visit to my daughter in New Orleans, I happened upon a Black-owned bookstore and discovered this incredible, life-changing book. It’s the kind of book I wish I had read 20 years ago. Now, I’m excited to share this little gem with some of my favorite people as a heartfelt gift.

ALEXA SYSTEM Okay, so I might be late to the party, but I recently got an Alexa system for my house, and I absolutely love it! The ability to make announcements in every room and call my son through it when I’m out has been a complete game changer for me. I drive my son crazy with, ‘Jay, take the dog out!’ every morning.

FACE B/ACE

Of

In our exclusive interview, meet Cordell, a dedicated laborer from the vibrant west side of Chicago, who shares his inspiring journey in the construction industry. Cordell not only provides valuable safety tips for those navigating this field but also imparts insightful wisdom for individuals contemplating a career in construction.

Why did you choose the field of construction? I chose construction because I wanted to be part of the process of rebuilding Chicago. I love the work and the sense of duty that comes with it, like keeping the work area safe and clean. What are some of your challenges? In the beginning, it was tough, but now I’m used to it. I’m on my feet for eight hours a day, watching for dangers, lifting heavy objects, and keeping the area clean. Multitasking is a constant. How long have you been in construction, and what are your memorable projects? I’ve been in construction for seven years. A standout project was contributing to the police and firefighters academy. It felt special because Chicago depends on its police for safety, especially for seniors.

10|www.bacemagazine.com

“Cordell is a hardworking laborer from the west side of Chicago who is dedicated to his family and takes immense pride in the work he does.” What advice would you give to someone entering construction? Keep moving forward. Never give up, even on tough days. Follow the rules and take precautions. What holiday traditions do you have? As a construction worker I love the contrast of putting up holiday lights and décor. It’s a time to be with friends and family, to enjoy each other’s company. I love the snow, the bright lights, and the love the season represents.

Cordell on Construction Safety What cautions do you look out for regarding dangers on the construction site? I watch for damaged tools, protruding nails in wood, and unstable scaffolds. My role is to spot these hazards so my coworkers stay safe. What safety challenges do you face as a laborer? The toughest challenge is working alongside other carpenters without getting in their way. Timing is critical to prevent accidents. Is winter construction more hazardous than other seasons, and what advice do you offer civilians near construction sites? Warm weather is ideal, but if you’re working in winter, dress warmly and watch out for ice. Keep your tools warm to prevent freezing. For civilians, look for caution tape and cones, which mark hazardous areas.

Thank you, Cordell, for being the FACE Of B/ACE in this holiday issue.

Can you tell us about your journey in the construction industry and how you became passionate about helping the community access construction jobs? When I started with CEC, I wasn’t entirely aware of what I was getting into within the construction industry. The magnitude of CEC’s role in the industry became clear as I progressed. Initially, I assumed my role would involve coordinating outreach events for new projects, based on the job description. I often joke with Rachel about this phase. It wasn’t until my first project, W.E. O’Neil’s Plumbers Hall, that I truly grasped the significance of organizations like CEC. From that point on, I was determined to ensure we served the community to the best of our ability. This meant personally knowing and addressing each individual we served, going the extra mile. My passion lies in serving and helping God’s people, and I believe He led me to CEC for precisely that purpose. What inspired you to join Community Empowered Through Construction, and what are your primary responsibilities as Senior Placement Coordinator? Joining CEC in June 2016 was a bit challenging initially. I had no prior experience in this domain, and interacting with people, something I wasn’t fond of, was a crucial part of the job. Relying heavily on my customer service background and the values instilled in me, I persevered. Despite the nervousness and initial discomfort, I persisted. In the fall of 2017, I achieved a significant milestone— securing my first sponsorship into the trades, specifically Electrical Local 134. Witnessing the joy in Rocky’s voice at that moment validated my sense of purpose and belonging at CEC.

“Witnessing the joy in Rocky’s voice at that moment validated my sense of purpose and belonging at CEC.” My main responsibilities involve collaborating directly with community residents to facilitate their access to opportunities within the construction industry. This encompasses those who are already part of the union as well as individuals aspiring to enter the union trades. The pathway to achieving this involves forging partnerships with General Contractors and their subcontractors on diverse construction projects throughout Chicago, in addition to collaborating with various workforce organizations. Can you share some success stories or memorable experiences from your work with Power Construction, Lendlease, Walsh, or other organizations in the construction industry? Over the years, I’ve cultivated valuable relationships that have contributed to CEC’s success. Power has been a strong ally in launching numerous careers in the trades. Collaborating with Walsh on the Cook County project was a memorable experience, leading to several candidates being sponsored into the trades. UnionBlu has also played a pivotal role in kickstarting the careers of several top laborers. However, one of the most touching success stories is that of a union carpenter who, after spending 25 years behind bars, transformed his life through our program. Sam’s journey from an apprentice to a foreman embodies the essence of CEC’s mission.

Research and understand the various trades available within the construction industry.

How has the construction industry evolved regarding diversity and inclusion during your career, and what changes would you like to see in the future? The construction industry in Chicago is slowly progressing in terms of diversity and inclusion. While there’s an increase in minority-owned construction companies on major projects, workforce diversity remains a challenge. Efforts from some companies and organizations are commendable, but true change necessitates a collaborative effort involving unions, general contractors, subcontractors, and workforce agencies to reshape the construction landscape in Chicago.

In your opinion, what are the most significant challenges that individuals from underserved communities face when trying to access construction jobs, and how do you address these challenges? Accessing union trades can be challenging for individuals from underserved communities due to limited opportunities and required certifications. I advocate for giving them a chance and engaging in conversations to understand their potential. Encouraging individuals to take classes and continuously learn during employment gaps is crucial. Additionally, I emphasize mastering all aspects of a trade.

What advice would you give to individuals looking to enter the construction industry, particularly those from underrepresented communities? Research and understand the various trades available within the construction industry, beyond laborers and carpenters. Comprehend the requirements of the trade you’re interested in, stay motivated, and be prepared to work hard. In one word sum up what the holidays mean to you? Family.

WINTER CONSTRUCTION INSIGHTS:

BEST PRACTICES FOR COLD WEATHER CONSTRUCTION Weather Monitoring: One of the first steps in preparing for winter construction is closely monitoring the weather forecast. Be prepared for sudden changes in temperature, precipitation, and wind. Having real-time weather updates will help you make informed decisions and schedule work during favorable conditions. Equipment Maintenance: Cold weather can be tough on construction equipment. Regularly maintain and service machinery to prevent breakdowns. Cold temperatures can also affect the lubricants and fluids in equipment, so choose those designed for low temperatures.

A

s the winter season approaches, construction professionals need to prepare for the unique challenges that cold weather brings to their projects. While winter construction can be more challenging than working in warmer months, it’s not impossible with the right strategies and precautions in place. In this article, we’ll explore some essential best practices for cold weather construction to ensure successful and safe project completion.

20|www.bacemagazine.com

Heated Workspaces: Create heated workspaces or shelters for workers to take breaks and warm up. These areas can also be used for storing materials that may be adversely affected by cold temperatures. Snow and Ice Management: Snow and ice buildup can pose significant safety hazards. Keep walkways, stairs, and work areas clear of snow and ice by shoveling, salting, or using heated mats. Daylight Hours: With shorter daylight hours in winter, plan construction activities accordingly. Adequate lighting is crucial for safety and productivity. Invest in high-quality

lighting systems to illuminate work areas effectively. Flexible Scheduling: Recognize that winter weather can disrupt schedules. Be prepared to adjust timelines and budgets to accommodate delays caused by adverse conditions. Safety First: Emphasize safety measures such as anti-slip surfaces, fall protection, and emergency response plans. Ensure that all workers are aware of coldrelated risks and the signs of cold-related illnesses like hypothermia. In conclusion, winter construction can be challenging, but with the right preparation and adherence to best practices, it can be carried out successfully. Prioritize safety, monitor the weather, and equip your team with the right gear and knowledge to mitigate the challenges of cold weather construction. By doing so, you’ll ensure that your projects stay on track, even in the coldest months of the year.

Drawing from over 30 years of experience braving Chicago’s harsh winter conditions, Troy Schaumleffel from Power Construction, offers valuable insights and tips for construction workers on overcoming the challenges posed by extreme cold weather. • • •

• • • •

• • • • •

Check the weather forecast the night before to prepare for the conditions. Always keep extra clothes and gloves in your car. It’s better to have too many layers than not enough. In cold temperatures, wear rubber boots over your work boots instead of piling on multiple pairs of socks to prevent sweating and cold feet. Consider investing in insulated Carhart bibs or overalls to stay warm. Bring a thermal jug filled with coffee or hot chocolate to keep warm during breaks. Opt for a warm spot to take your breaks and lunches. When temperatures drop to -8 degrees or lower, some jobs may be shut down due to reduced productivity and safety concerns for workers. Keep moving to maintain circulation and prevent frostbite; avoid prolonged standing. Ensure that walkways and egress areas are salted, shoveled, and free from slip hazards. Regularly check gang ladders for ice or debris and keep them salted for safety. Protect water lines from freezing by heating them or providing a controlled environment to prevent burst pipes. After a day in the cold, take a hot shower when you get home, have a healthy dinner, and get a good night’s sleep to combat fatigue and the toll of cold weather exposure.

B/ACE BOSS

CORNELL BURNETT 22|www.bacemagazine.com

Can you tell us about your journey and experience in the power industry and how you got started? My entry into the industry was unexpected; in 1985, a fellow basketball player at Lafollett Park handed me a job application for ComEd. Despite working in a factory at the time, I filled it out and started as a meter reader. Over the years, I climbed the ranks, attended climbing school, and eventually moved into management as the Director of Workforce Development and Public Affairs, after obtaining my bachelor’s degree.

“My relationships in the utility industry led...” As a workforce development program, how does Construct work? Construct is geared toward individuals aged 21 to 35, providing a pathway into construction careers with a focus on utility and construction companies like ComEd, Intren, and Mostech. We offer training, resources, and partner with organizations like “Communities Empowered Through Construction” for recruitment. The goal is to break down barriers and make these opportunities accessible. How quickly can one get into these programs? Getting into these programs can be challenging, but it’s possible. Generally,

being part of a union is essential for certain positions. I recommend obtaining a CDL or CDL permit to show your ability to drive company vehicles. Positive life choices, passing a drug test, and starting with entrylevel positions like Traffic Management and Vegetation Management are common steps. Many opportunities for advancement exist, and having a GED can open doors to higherpaying positions. What are the most challenging issues you are currently facing in the electrical utility industry? Diversity is a significant challenge in the industry. It’s not always intentional; sometimes, it’s due to a lack of awareness of opportunities. Diversity, in this context, encompasses factors like race, gender, and location. Bringing training programs to innercity areas with good transportation is crucial to reducing these challenges. 23|www.bacemagazine.com

What have been your past success stories? Intren, owned by Mostech, is part of a $12 billion company that is committed to strengthening Illinois communities. Individuals trained through my program have the opportunity to work for Intren. This partnership ensures a competent and prepared workforce, showcasing our commitment to making a lasting difference. How can someone who is interested in this opportunity be a part of your organization? We work with “Communities Empowered Through Construction” for recruitment and interviewing. Their strong community pulse helps us identify motivated candidates willing to be part of something great and elevate themselves to the next level. What is the next class in the pipeline? Our next class will start in January 2024, with two cohorts. Conducting programs in January and February aligns with the beginning of the year and the start of the construction season.

24|www.bacemagazine.com

What are the other things people should know about you? I believe in having multiple streams of income. Beyond my role at Mostech, I have a nonprofit called “You Too Mentorship Program,” an art gallery called “Studio Imani,” and a hair salon called “Imani Studio.” My children, all educated, are part of these ventures, contributing to a family legacy of business and community involvement. Lastly, as we enter the holiday season, what traditions do you have with your family for the holiday that you would like to share with us? With my children now grown, they take the lead in holiday traditions. I let them decide and do their thing while I continue my passion for training and educating individuals for opportunities in workforce development, equity, and inclusion. This work is vital to me, and I recently obtained a certificate in diversity and inclusion from Cornell University to further contribute to these efforts.

SUBCONTRACTOR YOU SHOULD KNOW I graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and started my career with Pepper Construction in Project Management. Over the early part of my career I had many great mentors and was a part of several amazing Chicago projects including Marshall Field’s Renovation, Art Institute MEP Upgrades, NEOCON work in the Merchandise Mart, Homan Square Community Center and several others. I became heavily involved in college recruiting and developed a passion for organizational culture. I decided to get my master’s degree and transitioned into human resources where I was able to learn and understand how the business operated not only from a single project perspective, but a corporate standpoint. As my career progressed, I transitioned to become a part of the executive leadership team with Power Construction. I had the opportunity to work with and learn from several industry leaders during my time as a vice president with Power Construction where I was fortunate to build a department that focused on culture and relationships. Being a female and African American minority, I have always been passionate about inclusion and culture and my love for construction remained, so in 2022 I decided to start my own firm, Byford Construction, Inc.

SAHARA BYFORD

President - Byford Construction, Inc.

30|www.bacemagazine.com

It has been a wonderful journey and I believe the experiences throughout my career have led me to this point. It truly takes a village to be successful, and I have realized through this process that I have an amazing village. My husband and kids have been so supportive

and encouraging as I transitioned to entrepreneurship and our team at Byford Construction has been absolutely amazing. We have great employees that have years of expertise and relationships, which gives us the opportunity to be competitive and execute on every project. I have also been fortunate to have so many strong relationships throughout the industry that have been instrumental in project opportunities, entrepreneurial mentorship, financing, and insurance along with many other areas. I am grateful for all the support, and I look forward to the day that I can ‘pay it forward’ to other women and minority entrepreneurs in the construction industry.

focused on installation of millwork, casework, doors, frames, and hardware, division 10 specialties, and to a smaller extent, framing and drywall. As a woman with extensive experience in the construction field, what challenges have you faced and overcome throughout your career?

after a few weeks. Could you share a memorable project or achievement from your career in construction that you’re particularly proud of?

Could you describe the key services that Byford Construction, Inc. provides, and what makes your company unique in the construction field?

One of the achievements that I am most proud of was working with our team to establish a true diversity and inclusion program during my time at Power. We were committed to focusing on all aspects of the organization with specific, measurable outcomes including scholarship programs for women and minorities, mentoring programs for trade employees, diverse board members, M/WBE subcontractor onboarding programs, and community involvement. We were able to partner with owners, community organizations, and CPS to develop something called the ‘Circle of Impact’ that hopefully will continue to grow and impact diversity and inclusion within construction.

Byford Construction is a certified Minority and WomenOwned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) specializing in highquality carpentry and general contracting services.

As the founder of Byford Construction, Inc., you’ve had the opportunity to make a significant impact. Can you share your vision for the company’s future?

Our team is not just focused on completing projects, we are dedicated to building relationships and exceeding client expectations. We prioritize our client needs and goals and put an emphasis on seamless communication and meticulous planning. Our carpenters are skilled union professionals who take pride in their work, ensuring that each project is completed to perfection through safe and quality execution. With years of experience in the industry, we excel in rough and finish carpentry, specifically

My parents always taught me to work hard, believe in yourself, and to stay curious. These are all foundational actions that I believe helped me to be successful. The construction industry

has evolved a lot throughout my 20+ year career, but I can recall being the only female and minority on job sites when I came out of college and people thought I was job site secretary. I worked on some tough sites over the years, but I asked lots of questions and found that people love to teach. Construction has knowledgeable, skilled workers in the trades and if you are truly curious, you can learn a lot. I implemented Foreman Fridays where I walked the job with different Foreman every Friday asking questions. It was amazing to see how supportive people became of a woman on the job site

Our vision is to be a leading M/ WBE carpentry company known for excellence, diversity, and social impact. We aim to inspire innovation in carpentry while promoting equity and diversity in our industry. Through our dedication to craftsmanship, community, and collaboration, we envision a future where our work transforms spaces, lives, and perceptions, driving positive change in our communities and beyond.

31|www.bacemagazine.com

In a male-dominated industry, what strategies or initiatives have you implemented to promote diversity and inclusion within the construction field? Construction is still a male dominated field, but there continues to be an increased focus on bringing and keeping more women in this industry, which is wonderful. I have enjoyed speaking at Women In Construction Week events and supporting several organizations over the years that promote women in construction including PWC-Professional Women in Construction and FWC-Federation of Women Contractors. I also like to go back to Purdue University and speak to construction students, both men and women, about some of the Unconscious bias that exists and how to be an advocate and ally for others when they are on a construction job site. One of the key quotes that I have continued to find impactful over the years is “if you aren’t actively including, you are probably accidentally excluding”. This is such a simple thought but can force you to look at your actions differently.

One of our favorite holiday family desserts is pumpkin bars. It’s a recipe that goes back over 100 years to my great-grandmother. I loved making these bars with my grandmother and mother and now it is so special that I get to make them with my daughter and pass down the tradition. I love the fall spices and you can’t go wrong with cream cheese frosting. Thinking about this dessert makes me hungry right now and puts a huge smile on my face!

THE POWER OF GIVING:

POWER CONSTRUCTIONS PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT B/ACE Magazine had the privilege of interviewing Sean Glasgow, the Director of Community Development for Power Construction. Sean plays a vital role in establishing impactful workforce opportunities and nurturing partnerships with local businesses. His responsibilities go beyond construction projects, emphasizing Power Construction’s commitment to giving back to the community it serves. As we embrace the season of giving and reflect on the holiday spirit, Power Construction, guided by Sean, remains dedicated to making a positive impact across the Chicagoland area. With a focus on both construction excellence and community well-being, Power Construction stands out as a beacon of positive change during this festive season.

36|www.bacemagazine.com

Can you share how Power Construction has made a positive impact on the Chicagoland area?

How does Power Construction inspire others to participate in philanthropic efforts?

We always do a community toy drive and partner with Lutheran Charities, who provide us with a list of the toys children would like. Over four weeks, our lobby is filled with over one hundred bags of toys. A few days before Christmas, we load them up and deliver them to Lutheran Charities. This is just one of the ways Power Construction and our employees give back.

Making philanthropy part of your company culture is crucial. It should be an expectation, and that’s why I’m proud to work at Power Construction. Giving back is not just about business; it’s about contributing to the community where you work, and this spirit resonates with our employees.

Apart from the holiday season, how can others get involved with you and Lutheran Charities?

Can you share a memorable moment from your philanthropic work?

Our employees can also take two days off each year to give back to their communities. In what other ways does Power Construction assist philanthropically? We actively encourage our employees to give back, and our company’s executives lead by example. We aim to be impactful in the neighborhoods where we’re working. Many of our charitable ideas come from our employees’ input.

I understand you have a scholarship. Can you tell us about it? We’ve initiated a scholarship fund over the last four years. This is one of many ideas that emerged from our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve. The scholarship, which goes up to ten thousand dollars, is for students pursuing engineering. Do you have any holiday traditions you’d like to share? I celebrate Christmas with my large family. Over the past four Christmases, I’ve hosted gatherings at my house, with up to forty people joining us. We share food and fond memories of Christmases past. This tradition is very precious to me. 37|www.bacemagazine.com

Christmas has always held a special place in my heart, invoking a unique blend of nostalgia, warmth, and festivity. It is a time when the world seems to slow down, and we gather together with loved ones to celebrate the spirit of giving, love, and togetherness. The twinkling lights, the aroma of freshly baked cookies, and the sound of familiar carols filling the air create an atmosphere that is truly magical. For me, Christmas is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewal. It reminds me to pause and appreciate the blessings in my life, the relationships that have shaped me, and the experiences that have made me who I am. It serves as a gentle reminder to reconnect with those who matter most, to reminisce about shared memories, and to create new ones that will be treasured for years to come.

Every holiday season, I organize an event called the “Tree of Remembrance.” This event is dedicated to honoring those who have lost someone to violence in Chicago. It’s an initiative of my organization, “Never Forget Chicago.” We set up a unique tree at the Daley Plaza, specially fabricated for this purpose. On this tree, we engrave the names of those who have passed away. To tie this back to my art, I also provide T-shirts to the families of the deceased. These shirts bear the message “Never Forget” along with the name of the departed individual. It’s an example of how I connect my work from books to public displays and T-shirts, all in the spirit of remembrance and healing. Participating in the “Tree of Remembrance” is open to anyone who has lost someone to violence and wishes to honor their memory. For those who want to volunteer and support this cause, we welcome your assistance. To get involved, please visit “Never Forget Chi.org” where you can find registration information. If you’d like to reach out directly, feel free to email me at neverforgetchicago@gmail. com. Email is the most efficient way to connect with me. Thank you for sharing your remarkable journey with us, Maxwell. Your dedication to art, philanthropy, and the community is truly inspiring, and you are making a significant impact on the world.
