Doctoral Consortium Class of 1996

Participating in the 1996 Doctoral Consortium helped shape my future career and life. Most important were the people I met. In particular other PhD students. Dean Shepherd and I met for the first time and became instant friends. We have remained friends since and have conducted much productive research together. I’m still in touch with many other participants. I also met leading people in our field for the first time. Bill Gartner and Candy Brush gave a memorable seminar. Karl Vesper gave great advice I still live by: If you want to succeed as a scholar, most importantly “affix the seat of your body to the seat of your chair.” Since then, I’ve organized the Doctoral Consortium twice and have spoken at many more. It is a privilege to engage with the young enthusiastic PhD students that will become the future leaders of our field. The BCERC

Doctoral Consortium is the ideal place for doing this.
