OOK for Buyers has the corporate mission of communicating and describing the evolution of fashion and, consequently, of Italian culture to fashion international buyers. History has taught us that leaderships, both cultural and economic ones, are dynamic and often cyclic. After an undisputed Italian supremacy, the trend flows have been powered by multi-ethnic and global creativity during the last decades; but, the global design environment still preserve the undoubtedly Italian, extraordinary capacity of representing elegance and style in every cultural product created in so far. Italian design is a tangible asset which is indispensable to all international buyers willing to widespread Italian style and expertise across the world, through their own stores. BOOK for Buyers n°32 now closes the curtains on 2017 by highlighting a passion for “Italianity” in all its contents. The cover story, photographed by Federico Canzi, has been set in an exceptional location: the Eighteenth-century’s Teatro Petrella in the small town of Longiano, which is the perfect synthesis between culture and fashion. Actually, from these images does a flawless overview on the FW 2017-18 collections emerge. You will find out how the continuous metamorphosis of the made-in-Italy production is strongly linked to the rediscovery of the origins. The Prêt-à-porter and Fast Fashion are characterised by a precise input: i.e., to enhance the history of Italian fashion. So let’s read about the rediscovery of Italian heritage to renew the brands’ image, as told by the Marketing Director at Alea, a brand founded in 1952, an year after the official institution of Made-in-Italy. The Fashion&Art section, through the eyes of Salvatore Ferragamo, will tell about Italy in 1927, the year when he made his return to Italy. Luisa Tazzari, owner of Big Boss stores, will talk about her (almost 50-year long) job experience in the Italian Retail industry. Then, the Communications Manager at .bijouets, Stefania Favaro will open the doors to the production with 3D technology, now considered as the Third Industrial Revolution. In this issue, we will also inaugurate a new “Service” heading dedicated to the cultural and society sectors interacting and evolving synergistically with fashion. This is why we will meet architect Pier Currà, who has recently concluded important job experiences in the industry of Fashion Retail. The Design&fashion section will present the exhibition entitled “Abitare Cangiari” (“Living Cangiari”) realised in collaboration with Lualdi design company, with the strong commitment of recovering and enhancing the traditional cultural heritage of the Calabria region (Italy), through a selection of clothing articles produced by using organic materials and production processes having a zero environmental impact. Enjoy your reading!

Buona lettura.

Fashion is undergoing a period of profound changes. The end customer tends to want more and more. To enhance this phenomenon are the social network and the frantic rhythms that inexorably affect our daily life. Many social media are considering the possibility of opening up to the e-commerce, which means that we can buy directly from a post with just a click. Everything is within the reach of all. This is why in a short time many young brands in the field of fashion have managed to prevail by introducing some substantial novelties in a mature industry. The end customer is less and less inclined to be faithful to a single brand or to wear only signed garments. It happens, therefore, that consumers tend to mix luxury items with others of less commercial value, creating an original and captivating contrast. On the following pages you will find more information about the new season trends and a BOOK For Buyers’ selection of Italian clothing brands.

ELENA MIRÒ INAUGURATES ITS FIRST FLAGSHIP STORE IN MILAN

Elena Mirò - the brand which is the expression of femininity, Italian prêt-à-porter, and expertise in the dress making - inaugurates its first Flagship Store in Milan, entirely designed to enhance the soul and personality of its customers, in every aspect: with a surface of 350 sqm and 5 shop windows facing Via Manzoni, next to Piazza della Scala. The new project by Elena Mirò is based on the desire of respecting the building and local area heritage. The architectural works conducted by a team of architects from Elena Mirò have “incorporated” the history, the design and the architectural specificities of the hosting building, creating high profile interiors and, at the same time, a welcoming environment. This great restyling work started in June 2017, and it was concluded last October, within record times. Now the entire building is equipped with an external lighting system enhancing the architectural structure and creating a particular atmosphere during the night. The light comes directly from the building, and it gives it an added value and a new life, making Piazza della Scala even more magic. This architectural project was realised in full respect of the area requirements. The internal and external architectural intervention on the location has focused on some specific, strong elements, such as the external and internal arcades, and some construction materials that have been re-interpreted (all derived directly from the original building facilities).

The Italian women prêt-à-porter brand denominated Forte Forte – born in 2002 from an idea of brothers Giada Forte and Paolo Forte – is now strengthening its distribution network through the opening of new monobrand stores. The campaign has already begun a month ago, with the launch of an E-Commerce Website, and it will now include the opening of two monobrand stores in Paris and Milan in 2018. Interview to Luisa Tazzari, owner and woman department buyer at Big Boss

Luisa Tazzari

Luisa, can you talk about your career? When and how did your passion for fashion start? I have been working in the Retail sector for almost 50 years. It now may seems an eternity, but, actually, the years have flown by. For the future, I’ve still got a lot of goals to achieve. I have always had a great passion and love for fashion. After concluding my studies at the University, where I graduated in law, I started to teach French at school. But, during one

of my holidays periods in the Riviera of Romagna (Italy), I met a young man designing knitwear who produced his articles in Tuscany. I decided to go and visit him at his own factory, and I came back home with two suitcases full of marvellous sweaters and pullovers. My best friends soon became my first customers, and I then decided to make return to my friend’s in Tuscany in order to find new products; in that occasion, I bought a large quantity of top brands’ jeans and sweatshirts. Later on, I decided to open my own business at home; given the ever-increasing demand for new products, I undertook a new enterprise. In particular, I contacted a company based in Cattolica (Italy), which was at the beginning of its activity as well. It was the 1978 year. The company was denominated Gilmar and it produced women’s clothing. In the following years, the company developed up to creating the Gerani brand (producing men’s clothing), and the Iceberg brand (producing both men’s and women’s lines).

“I have always tried to give to each store a unique identity by keeping a leitmotiv in terms of elegance, luxury and research.”

Your first store was denominated “Boutique Equilibrio”, then “Big Boss” arrived. Tell us how you succeeded in opening so many sales points and in keeping them active for so many years. In 1980, I opened my first shop: EQUILIBRIO; I really needed it. During those years, I was teaching French at school, while I was growing up my two children. I commenced my new business in Argenta, close to Ferrara. My second store was named “BIG BOSS”; I opened it together with a business partner, in Lido degli Estensi, a sea town. Those were the fab 1980s, when EL Charro was so popular! Young people went literally crazy for that brand. They waited for hours for the opening in the early morning to buy and wear that brand’s jeans, shirts and belts. The atmosphere was absolutely cool! The store colours were

the white and the blue. My customers came from all over Italy. In 1984, together with my business partner, I opened a third store: “ALIBI”. This store concept was designed for a more classical clientèle. Here we introduced new brands that were trendy at the time: Giorgio Armani, Stone Island, C.P. Company. I will never forget the day of 25th April of 1986, when we inaugurated our new BIG BOSS store in Lido degli Estensi. This is still today the current sales point. Later, in 1989, we also opened a store in Ferrara. Here I could feel at home. As I had spent most of my youth in Ferrara, we decided to open BIG BOSS Men, BIG BOSS Women and BIG BOSS Accessories there. From 1989 to 2012, I experienced a fantastic period of my life, before my stores in Ferrara were sold. At the peak of my business expansion, I totalled as many as 12 stores. Now I don’t want to remember the following sad years, but I prefer to recall the most exciting ones: for example, when I was responsible for the selection of stock inventories and orders. How do you do your products selection? How can you successfully identify the top collection, materials, colours and trends with 18 months in advance? It is not simple. It is an innate personal talent, like personal

Eravamo arrivati a 12 boutique.

Have you got any unrealised dreams? A new Retail Vision? Maybe an Online activity? Of course! Who hasn’t got any? Yet, you should also be aware that, once you arrive at a certain moment of your life, you can transmit your dreams to others. For example, I have two fantastic granddaughters. Who knows if, one day, they will meet a knitwear producer like I did, or if maybe they will feel my emotions when I took home my first suitcase full of clothing articles to be sold! Or if they will ever open an online shop to explore new business opportunities! After all, some emotions are only yours, and do they remain yours forever!

Giancarlo Tafuro, Alea’s Communications Manager

Founded in 1952, in the same year when the doors of the White Hall at Palazzo Pitti were open for the first time to welcome international buyers and journalists arrived in Florence to attend for the fashion shows that marked the birth of the “made-in-Italy” production, Alea has offered us an overview on the heritage and new market challenges for the brand through a brief interview to Giancarlo Tafuro, the company’s Communications Manager.

The brand was founded in 1952, and it was therefore witness of the made-in-Italy evolution. Can you talk about the brand’s history? The history of Alea company is worth being told. It was around the end of 1940s. The Second World War had left to the young European generations entire nations to be rebuilt. Italy was one of them, and young Italians could distinguish themselves for their capacity of “doing free enterprise”, a quality on which the Italian economic boom of 1950s and 1960s was based. Many US companies took advantage of this wave of optimism, by offering their products and services to the Italian market. Among them, there was Singer. This company was founded by Isaac Singer in New York in 1851 and it had the objective of conquering over the Italian market. As a matter of fact, by relying on the network of small Catholic parish churches in the Italian villages and towns, the company started to hold training courses oriented towards young women for the selling of sewing machines. For these young Italian women, this initiative

by Singer represented an opportunity for getting a job. In the small town of Savignano sul Rubicone, there lived two young men: Agostino Maremonti and Spartaco Onofri. Like all their 20-yo peers, they had survived Second World War. In the summer of 1951, they visited the town local parish church, and they found out the initiative organised by Singer. They soon realised that the US company had created something unique: it had trained a first work group of persons capable of tailoring men’s shirts. Mr. Onofri and Mr. Maremonti then asked to the local parish priest for the possibility of creating their own business inside the parish rooms. This is Savignano sul Rubicone, the place where Roman emperor Julius Caesar told to Rome, as an act of defiance: “alea iacta est”, i.e. “the die is cast”. In the same way, Mr. Onofri and Mr. Maremonti took on the new challenge. In 1952, they founded Alea. And, after 65 years, this challenge still continues. The sales campaign for the FW 2017-2018 collection is now closed, reporting positive results if compared to 2017. This is thanks to your Retail expansion strategy across Northern Europe and the Asian continent. What are your current development projects for the distribution network? In addition to the initiatives already set up in Northern Europe and Asia, we are now expanding our activity in North America and, in particular, in Canada. In this country, our products are now widely appreciated, after a long period of stagnation due to custom duties and regulations. The recent changes in custom regulations and duties will help in making our products more competitive.

are not enough. What we need is an integrated development strategy. Let’s imagine having a strategy like a multiple-step pathway: starting from the product, it continues up to the post-sales service, passing through a series of intermediate steps, i.e., checkpoints. Fashion show and trade fairs are among these checkpoints, together with our sales agents/distributors, the social activities, and so on. All fashion shows should become

“We would like to continue to propose elegant shirts, but with a modern touch. ” part of a coherent strategy providing for initiatives and activities aimed at this fundamental stage based on trade business. If you are not fully aware of, or you simply underestimate the strategic importance (especially in terms of communication) of the company’s participation into a fashion show or event (like Pitti Uomo), you risk to penalise (or abort) the entire process.

Recently, you have marked a new stage in your brand’s image development. What are the new Alea’s stylistic features? And which elements have you kept from the corporate legacy heritage? At present, we are experiencing a transition from the classical lines of our legacy heritage to an easier and “non conventional” shirt, thanks to innovative fitsizes and exclusive prints. We would like to continue to propose elegant shirts, but with a modern touch. For example, a man in suit should wear a shirt with a bold print rather than a simple striped pattern. In other words, we would like to keep up with modern lines, without losing our “savoir-faire” and elegance in creating tailor-made shirts.

How does Alea communicate and present the quality of its collections in the era of influencers and social networks? Alea is keeping up with the modern digital technologies and, in addition to the legacy Website, it now manages a dedicated corporate blog, and a series of corporate accounts/profiles on the top social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, just to mention two of them. The company is very active in this regard, and it prefers to publish important close-ups on details to make the brand attractive to everybody. Recently, it has begun to collaborate with important influencers. Do you think that the virtual store can eventually replace the physical store? The virtual store will never replace the physical one. Certainly, we have been discussing a lot about online business and famous E-commerce websites for some years. But a shirt is still a men’s formal garment which should be tried on before buying it. The perfect combination of an online store and a physical store is certainly the best solution to be adopted in order to meet Alea’s target audience, from the youngest to the most traditional customers willing to visit a boutique to choose their outfit.

1927 - THE RETURN TO ITALY GABRIELLA SABA

Italian fashion returns to its origins. We have observed this tendency during the latest catwalks of the Milan Women Fashion Week, where the Italian BIGs of fashion have paid homage to their stylistic origins. Versace, Dolce Gabbana, Gucci and Prada are now aiming at their heritage as the key factor for the success in the next seasons. Today, the desire of recovering the history of made-inItaly production materializes in a symbolic year for the history of Italian fashion: as a matter of fact, in 2017, fashion is celebrating the 90th anniversary of Salvatore Ferragamo’s return to Italy. To pay tribute to this important event, there is nothing better than a special exhibition dedicated to it, which is obviously organised by the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum based in Florence. The exhibition intends to become a sort of “mirror” of what the so-called shoemaker of Hollywood stars could observe during his journey back to Italy, a country that appeared to be completely renewed and changed for those who were arriving from abroad, after a long period of distance.

and inspired by the then Fascism’s promises of growth and modernity for his home country, Salvatore Ferragamo left the United States on board of the Roma liner in 1927, to make return to Italy. In Hollywood, he had become a successful businessman: in fact, he could assist and contribute to the great cinema revolution. With his comfortable and beautiful pairs of shoes, in line with the new lifestyle based on a wealthier society, he had covered the feet of famous actresses such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. At that time, the United States were opulent and highly-developed, but only in Italy he could indeed find skilful artisans to meet the needs and expectations of his famous customers. The idea of founding a handmade footwear factory in Italy for continuous exports operations in America was realised only partially. Salvatore did not limit himself to open a workshop in Florence, but he decided to permanently settle down in the Tuscan city in a period when the word “return” was often used: a “return to order”, a “return to old professions”, a “return to the great Italian tradition”. In particular, the exhibition intends to describe the history of this transition: a transition for practicalness and style. The exhibition pathway is a moment of contemporary reflection which Carlo Sisi (the curator of the exhibition) develops by following the thread linking all aspects of Salvatore’s journey back to Italy. The exhibitive story tells the perception and feelings that he had of the then Italian culture, while visitors can examine these elements in their entirety like in a cultural formation novel. The set designer Maurizio Balò has created eight sections by following the mental journey by Salvatore Ferragamo in a 1920s-Italy. Starting from his cruise on board of the liner - obtained through a photomontage that sets forth the rich interiors and the opulent lifestyle inside the liner -, the visit pathway continues up to the aesthetic expression of body physicality as conceived in the culture of the early Twentieth century. With the installation of paintings by Guido Ferroni, the typical wardrobes and the paintings of famous Italian women like Marquise Luisa Casati, Paola Borboni and the Sisters Wulz, the exhibition creates a vivid image of Italy during the early Twentieth century, where the concept of made-in-Italy started to develop in the intellectual consciousness.

Contemporary low-cost brands reproduce a version of the season’s trend seen on the catwalks and sell it at affordable prices. It was once thought “I buy this garment because it will last forever”; a definitely outdated argument. The “fast fashion” has introduced a new concept: the chance to lightheartedly get rid of an old cloth, as there are plenty of other things to buy. Along with the programmed collections that outline the new trends, we are offered continuous spare cycles of clothes for different temperatures. Here is a selection of emerging b2b Italian companies that, in our opinion, deserve our attention.

Donatella Versace has “out-cried” in the catwalk her emotions and nostalgia, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of his death.

“Let’s imagine a world without his creative genius”, Dj Violet’s voice has then continued through the lyrics of the song created specifically for this fashion show. A flat world, with no prints or colours. The collection has actually recovered from the Medusa archive the iconic dresses and clothing articles designed by Gianni Versace during his career. Donatella has paid homage to her brother’s creations without making the collection nostalgic. Each clothing article has been re-interpreted in a contemporary way. It has been the celebration of an always-current tradition, the presentation of a timeless work of art.

“It would be impossible to celebrate his entire world in one collection, so I have decided to focus on his beloved prints.” Donatella has commented in the fashion show official press release. The “Native Americans” prints from the Spring/Summer 1992

BACK TO THE ROOTS. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MADE IN ITALY NICOLA BRAJATO

Gucci could not have chosen a better location for its Cruise 2018 collection. The paintings seem to come to live through Alessandro Michele’s creations, walking down the corridors of Italian art and Renaissance cradle: Palazzo Pitti.

Fashion, by its definition, is ephemeral, variable, always ready to turn the page and move one, to carefully check the future without betraying its own past. The spring/summer 2018 collections presented at the last Milan Fashion Week, as this issue of BookforBuyers shows us, manifested a deep interest towards the Made in Italy heritage undertaking a journey back to the origins and bringing the fascinating history of the Italian identity on the catwalk. If the “Made in Italy” corresponds today all around the world to a specific origin indication which is based on the idea of taste, style, innovation and quality, it is thanks to the evolution of a cultural operation that has characterised the XX century. Despite the attempts to affirm an independent Italian fashion, in a period in which Paris and the Haute Couture were reigning throughout all Europe, begin in the first years of the century with the artist-seamstress Rosa Genoni and later with the fascist regime (even if with strong restrictions), it is difficult to talk about an effective Made in Italy until the middle of the century. Indeed, the roots of a totally Italian fashion start to give the first life signals only in 1951. Thanks to Giovanni Battista Giorgini’s genius, the first fashion show dedicated to Italian fashion designers is organised in Florence, at Palazzo Pitti Sala Bianca. The Alta Moda is presented to American buyers and

to the international press, which from this moment will never stop to talk about the so called Italian Style. A few years later, specifically during the 70s, the birth of the Prêt-à-porter gives a great push to the Made in Italy evolution, a phenomena of fashion democratisation that permits the connection between the creative system and the industrial one together with Milan which affirms itself as one of the most important fashion capital, reference point for the great season of the Italian fashion which continues during all the roaring 80s. But the risk for a decline is behind the corner, and the 90s crisis affects fashion too, which is by the way able to overcome the obstacle through organised strategies of renovation, orienting itself towards a “luxuryfication” of its supply, as the Prada and Gucci cases show. An operative line which arrives until today, capable of making the difference in a global market that is always more rich and variegated. To briefly retrace the main steps of the Made in Italy is an essential exercise in order to apprehend the evolution of the Italian Style between its crisis and rebirth, to understand from where we come from and to know how to analyse the contemporary Italian fashion system, a cultural industry which has reinvented itself through a wise and skilful relationship between manufacture, design and creativity, affirming itself with an outlined and wellfounded identity.

Curvy Fashion now bears the signature of Made in Italy

Lattementa FW 2017-18 collection

The fashion of the so-called “large sizes” is an ever expanding market, with great growth opportunities. Curvy women have now achieved such a high level of awareness of their body and beauty that they don’t buy a dress or clothing article just to cover themselves. The selection and research about products within this market is always getting more and more refined, while the customers’ requirements

are becoming higher and higher. Fashion is therefore adopting the “customer centricity policy” as well, so that the product can fit and meet the customer’s needs (and not vice versa). In particular, it is estimated that, in Italy, 33-35% of the feminine population wears clothes of over the “L” size (i.e., over “46” for Italy, over “14” for UK), that is to say a population of about 10 million women. And, given these figures, we can clearly maintain that Italy is a successful market for curvy collections. This is indeed confirmed by the Italian

With the dream of offering to each woman a fashionable and young stylish product, he founded in Italy one of the first curvy fashion houses for selling Fast Fashion collections. più raffinata e gli standard dei consumatori diventano sempre più elevati.

From a distribution perspective, the main necessity was that of obtaining a more extensive widespreading for our products across the national territory. If, on the one hand, it is true that, during the last decades, we have observed a centralization of the products distribution and store location within largest stores and malls (for the necessity of finding everything, quicker and in the same place), on the other hand, our target market still prefers to buy at the local store. Our sales process is based on psychological needs, Lisa Benati (Retail Manager) has told to our Book.

But the curvy revolution does not stop here. Now, the company is aiming at the conquest over the European market, with the launch of a new Prêt-àporter collection.”In reality, this is a preview that we offer to you - continues Lisa Benati–, It is a project still at the early preliminary phase, we have just begun to talk about it. CELEBRITY STYLE

In fashion you can not do without the accessories. Sometimes they are more important than the garment itself, alone they can dress up and customise even the slimest dress, they manage to enhance our character and also transform our style. A hat, a pair of gloves, a purse, a belt, a pair of shoes today more than ever become the protagonists of the look and are indispensable in the closet of a woman. An accessory can tell a lot about who wears it and often manages to solve the situation “I do not know what to put on”, can style us, can make us chic, can give that glam look that the only dress often can not. In the ranking of women’s clothing priorities, accessories certainly occupy the top positions. On the following pages you will find a BOOK For Buyers’ selection of ‘Made in Italy’ fashion accessories, bags, shoes and belts.

THE FLORAL ROMANTICISM BY LELLA BALDI

3.

The shoes within the FW 20172018 collection by Lella Baldi are created from an encounter with the arts and an imaginative abstracted landscape. Here all accessories and applications are taken to life thanks to a floralinspired Romanticism. The floral theme is the great leitmotiv in the brand production: a sort of continuum in all the latest collections by Lella Baldi, which, for this season, becomes the brand’s symbol and carryover element. The footwear Stylism is absolutely pure, while the flower petals wrap and encompass these shoes by merging with them, like if they were a unique marking and signature by the artist.

During the course of the years, HSL has developed a set of skills and competence to become a leading company in the rapid prototyping industry; in 2012, it has invested all its long-established baggage of expertise into a new production challenge. Together with designer Selvaggia Armani, the company has created a collection of jewels entirely realised with 3D printing in polyamide.

“Third Industrial Revolution”, a concept aimed at building up exclusive innovation with an integrated project and production model. How do you create jewels with 3D printing? No limit to creativity. This is the philosophy at the basis of the usage of 3D printing technology: a new projecting frontier that overcomes the barriers imposed by daily routine business and mass production. By instantly elaborating the original idea to create the end product, this technology reduces the processing times, and it is capable of experimenting new forms and designs, which would be hard to realise with the traditional systems. 3D Printing is an additive process that transforms a 3D CAD file directly into a solid object. The technology used by .bijouets consists in a laser sintering process which makes use of polyamide powder and, as its name suggests, it applies a laser technology to sinter the materials used for the jewel construction, layer by layer. Initially, a thin layer of powder is spread from a specific device and the laser technology starts the sintering process, where required. The board is

lowered at the required measure, then another layer of powder is spread, and the process is repeated again and again, as applicable. The main advantage of this process is the fact that no supporting element is required, as the non-sintered powder provides for support to the higher layers. At the end of the process, the jewel must be freed by the powder in excess; at .bijouets, the created objects are then hand-finished and painted.

The new so-called “light” production technologies are a step forward in the eco-sustainable production. Has your company endorsed this commitment too? Yes, .bijouets makes use of light technology having a minimum impact on the environment, and thus it is sustainable. Ideas are turned into the final products through an almost immaterial, imperceptible process, allowing reducing the wastes and the emissions, while respecting the natural environment. The packaging is also eco-friendly, and it is realised with completely recyclable paper.

From a stylistic perspective, your brand’s distinctive feature is the creation of your collection in collaboration with contemporary designers and architects. For the 2017 collection, you have concluded collaboration with designer Maria Diana. How do you select your partner designers for your creations? The selection of our partner designers comes from an accurate research at an international level and from the encounter with them at international industry events, where a reciprocal interest may rise. We are also open to “voluntary applications” or manifestations of interest.

Can you talk about your collection designed by Maria Diana? How have you met her for the first time? The first meeting with the designer was at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, when we soon experienced a reciprocal interest thanks to a common aesthetic and design vision. For this collection, Maria Diana has created simple and elegant pieces of jewellery to be worn every day, and which can be customised given their modular structure. As a matter of fact, the Cube collection is inspired by the aesthetic principles and lines of the designer. The jewels within this collection aim at innovating the brand’s production without compromising its style; geometric elements, paired in different colours, do create a ground-breaking movement, though characterised by simplicity. Each item in this collection is unique, and it combines style, research, tradition, and innovation together.

Bracelet of the Gianfranco Ferrè collection

Recently, your company has collaborated with the Gianfranco Ferré Foundation, taking two of the famous designer’s jewellery articles back to life. What does this collaboration consist in? And how is it born? Our collaboration with the Gianfranco Ferré Foundation is born thanks to prof. Alba Cappellieri, who has favoured our meeting with it. The objective of the Foundation is that of reproducing and reproposing to the end customers two pieces of jewellery shown off at the exhibition dedicated to the Italian designer, entitled “Gianfranco Ferré. Sotto un’altra luce: Gioielli e Ornamenti” (“Gianfranco Ferré. Under a new light: Jewellery and Ornaments”), and sponsored by Turin’s Museums Foundation. All the items on show - realised for fashion catwalks from 1980 to 2007 - are described as accessories to dresses, but they are presented together with some of the clothing articles in which the jewellery concept has invented and given life to the dress itself, becoming its core element and soul. After seeing our creations on show at the Jewellery Museum in Vicenza (Italy), the Foundation has assigned to us the realization of two marvellous jewels designed by Ferré. The result of our reinterpretation work is now exclusively on sale at the bookshop of Palazzo Madama (Turin) until the closure date of the exhibition in February 2018.

The excellence of Italian footwear: Greymer

Greymer’s head office and factory based in San Mauro Pascoli

Today, the so-called “Rubicon Valley District” represents the world’s most important industry area for the production of women luxury footwear. Yet, in 1600, the area could count on four cobblers only. It was around the beginnings of 1900 that the local footwear industry took a decisive leap forward by moving to a complete manufacturing of shoes to be sold across the Italian markets. In

The turning point for the local industry was around the second half of 1950s, when Italy experienced a real consumer boom. Finally, in 1957, MIR-MAR - the first footwear high-technology industrial company - was founded. And it was at the end of that decade that the area could see the birth of the first shoemaking companies making the district famous worldwide - Casadei, Pollini and Sergio Rossi.

Companies like that, which are run by young businessmen or businesswomen capable of enhancing and re-interpreting the brand according to the values of new buyers groups (e.g., the Millennials), are a certainty in the continuous evolution of made-in-Italy production across the Rubicon Valley District.

GREYMER

MyGrey FW 2017-18 collection

For the 2017 winter season, Greymer and MyGrey will present a collection that definitively shades the distinction between day and night wear. The exploration of a style dark-side has generated Gothic-inspired models with Romantic but cutting-edge elements, such as leather or gross grain ruches, pearls and flower embroidery works in black or grey tones, with a more sports and masculine design and sole.

The Tuxedo or Smoking concept is re-elaborated with classical shoe forms enriched with fur inserts, metal details, cashmere strings, velvet and grosgrain fabrics. Boots, cuissardes, moccasins, ballerinas, lace-up shoes, cool slippers, as well as details like zips and metal sails are mixed with leather inserts and warrior-alike forms. Active wear thus becomes even more sophisticated, with precious Glamour fabrics and woollypunched surface layers.

Stivali, cuissardes, mocassini, ballerine, stringate, pantofole dalle forme grintose, dettagli come zip e vele metalliche combinate a inserti in pelle e sagome da guerriero.

MILAN, LOMBARDY DISTRICT

The Italian city of Milan is recognised internationally as one of the world’s most important fashion capitals, along with Paris, New York and London. It is additionally recognised as the main sartorial hub in the country, with Rome and Florence being other major centres. Throughout the 20th century, the city expanded its role as a fashion centre, with a number of rising designers contributing to Milan’s image as a stylistic capital. Following this development, Milan emerged in the 1960s and 1980s as one of the world’s pre-eminent trendsetters, maintaining this stint well into the 1990s and 2000s and culminating with its entrenchment as one of the “big four” global fashion capitals. As of today, Milan is especially renowned for its role within the prêt-à-porter category of fashion. In 2009, the city was declared as the “fashion capital of the world” by the Global Language Monitor, even surpassing its relative cities.

CTM was born in 1984 thanks the initiative of about thirty textile operators which have been working in the “heart” of Milan for many years. Today “Centro Tessile Milano” gathers over 190 associates offering a wide range of textile products, from clothes to underwear, from leather fashion to linen, from costume-jewelery to fabrics, from footwear to haberdashery.

FLORENCE, TUSCANY DISTRICT

Florence is regarded by some as the birthplace and earliest centre of the modern (post World War Two) fashion industry in Italy. The Florentine “soirées” of the early 1950s organized by Giovanni Battista Giorgini were events where several now-famous Italian designers participated in group shows and first garnered international attention. Florence has served as the home of the Italian fashion company Salvatore Ferragamo since 1928. Gianfranco Lotti, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Ermanno Scervino, Stefano Ricci, Patrizia Pepe, Enrico Coveri and Emilio Pucci were also founded and most of them are still headquartered in Florence. Other major players in the fashion industry such as Prada and Chanel have large offices and stores in Florence or its outskirts. Florence’s main upscale shopping street is Via de’ Tornabuoni, where major luxury fashion houses and jewelry labels, such as Armani and Bulgari, have their elegant boutiques.

The town of Prato counts 3,500 workshops in the garment industry and ready-to-wear, most of them are located in an industrial park named “Macrolotto di Iolo”. The Pronto Moda Prato district is in rapid evolution thanks to the reaction of the most dynamic traditional industry in the fashion sector and to the launch of new production companies.

CARPI, EMILIA DISTRICT

The industrial textile-clothing district of Carpi is one of the most important in Italy and one of the few effective throughout Europe. By tradition it is specialized in production of knitwear and clothing, and its strength lies in the high production capacity of small and medium enterprises, which were able to coordinate creativity, design and excellent technical standards in the yarn manufacturing. The firms in the District have developed distinct abilities, know-how and efficiency in a logic of integrated supply chain. The outcome is a competitive network capable of providing either highly specialized services or complete management of the entire production process. This functional network can run with great flexibility according to the production needs. The District is an “intelligent network, in which creativity and innovation are spread at each stage of the process, from concept to delivery, so as to add value at every phase of manufacture.

ANCONA, MARCHE DISTRICT

Ancona is one of the main ports on the Adriatic Sea, especially for passenger traffic, and is the main economic and demographic centre of Marche region. Since the 1980s the economy of the district has been radically transformed, without however repudiating its rural past. Many of the small craft workshops scattered throughout the rural settlements have modernised and become small businesses, some of which have become major renowned brands (Indesit, Tod’s, Guzzini, Teuco). This evolution led to the emergence of ‘specialised’ industrial areas, which are still profitable: footwear and leather goods in a large area straddling the provinces of Macerata and Fermo; furniture in the Pesaro area in particular; household appliances and textile industry in the province of Ancona, in which the main engineering companies are also to be found.

NAPLES, CAMPANIA DISTRICT

Naples is Italy’s fourth-largest economy after Milan, Rome and Turin, a major cargo terminal and its port is one of the Mediterranean’s largest and busiest. The city has experienced significant economic growth since World War II, being one of Italy and Europe’s top tourist cities. In recent times, there has been a move away from a traditional agriculture-based economy in the province of Naples to one based on service industries. In early 2002, there were over 249,590 enterprises operating in the province. Most of them are located at CIS, an industrial area near the town of Nola. The creative and commercial heart of Naples is Chiaia district. Stretching from Via Riviera di Chiaia to Via Calabritto, then Piazza dei Martiri, Via Santa Caterina, Rodino square, Via Filangieri and Via Dei Mille this elegant district represents a path across the main brands of design and fashion and hosts the annual event “Napoli Moda Design”.

Fashion Architect Interview Pier Currà

Arch.Pier Currà

When did you found the Pier Currà Architettura firm? And what was its mission? Our firm was born in Cesena (Italy) in 2015, after a series of consulting and job experiences in Italy and abroad, and today it includes a team of six architecture professionals. I like to maintain that, here, we do only deal with architecture, in the original literal sense of the word: every day, we work to combine the concept of Archè with that of Tèchne. They

represent the primary principles that govern the ideas and the research on the techniques that are more suitable to realize them. At our firm, we have the opportunity of dealing with projects at different scales, from the product design to the building up of large structures, but our method at work does not change. From architecture to fashion. Can you tell us how you started to collaborate with the fashion retail industry? It has been a lucky encounter, but, at the same time, something we all wanted to do. On this respect, I can confirm the common idea that the success of our actions depends on to what extent you can stimulate and pursue your passion; by following this approach, you can meet the right people and do the best encounters. For us, our lucky encounter has been with the company Campomaggi & Caterina Lucchi SpA, which soon proved to be willing to recognise our enthusiasm and to welcome our ideas. We have worked with them on one of their most mission critical investments - the opening of the flagship store of Campomaggi brand in Via della Spiga - Milan, amid the most prestigious stores in the world. In particular, we have proposed a total restyling of the brand’s exhibition concept and we have dealt with every single detail.

“we do only deal with architecture, in the original literal sense of the word: every day, we work to combine the concept of Archè with that of Tèchne.” A modern store should be, in theory, a space where the public and the product establish a dynamic interaction. Today’s technology plays a fundamental role. Can you tell us how you succeeded in consolidating this relation in the Retail stores created by you? How can technology support this interaction? Nowadays, the Retail sector is changing dramatically. Resources are always more and more oriented towards the social and Web promotion channels, which represent the decisive phase in the customer journey (the so-called Zero Moment of Truth). Yet the physical store continues to be the true soul of the brand. Today, digital technologies offer extraordinary opportunities, but, for them, to become efficient, it is necessary to expand the project’s scope to an immersive, interactive experience, at the very heart of space. The mindless usage of digital technology as an instrument of the in-store dialogue with the customer can indeed end up flattening and trivialising the purchasing experience. When, at our firm, we examine a brand, we study its expressive codes, the

target public, and the modalities of interaction with the customers; we are fully committed in understanding how and to what extent the technological component should be used, with the idea that, under most circumstances, some detailed choices (such as the olfactory perception) are more important than giving to customers the possibility of using a huge touchdisplay. Many of us forget the fact that technology does not mean digital technology only. In our recent job (the Gabs brand’s flagship store in Corso Como Milan), we have broken all the conventional rules of visual merchandising by hanging their bags to a metal display rail in continuous motion which crosses the entire store for about 30 metres. Here, our objective has been a light, dynamic structure, while aiming at a new, impressive shopping experience. The technology used

In fashion, a product usage value is secondary with respect to the design and beauty attracting the end customers. Your work consists in finding the “main features” of a product and in highlighting their quality and performance. How is this process managed in the fashion cases which you dealt with? They say that a good architect works with his hands in the pockets and, on my opinion, this say is particularly true, especially when you deal with retail design. Being able to capture a brand’s soul is a real challenge that we cope with by trying to listen to the product’s target people: that is to say, the designer, the communications office, the sales department, the sales agents, as well as the production department. The results from this process help us in thinking about and designing the showroom. For example, while we were engaged in preparing both Campomaggi stores in Milan, we realised that time was a key factor. And it was a hard task! Yet we have been able to develop this concept in a completely new manner: for the job in Via Spiga, we have worked on the theme of a Renaissance studio and library - rooms where time expands and remains in standby; while for the job in Corso Como, we have worked on the gesture of “sculpting”, or imprinting a new

sign, like an action trying to compete with eternity. In this case, in addition to a large wall in pigmented brass coating by artist Pietro Spoto, we have deliberately used a fragile stone material so that it could be chipped and break during the assembly phase and during the store usage, becoming the physical transposition of the passing of time. What is the main feature characterizing your projects? In addition to a certain sobriety in the geometrical patterns, I think that it is not possible to exactly recognise a “signature” in our works, and, to some extent, I am happy for that. Each project has its own story and a path. On my opinion, in the long term, it is possible to appreciate and recognize the usage of a certain method. We like to identify a fertile perimeter, while working on an idea: then we suggest it, by making it more readable, and trying to obtain indications to compose our architectural project. Once we have taken our hands out of the pockets, the rest of the work activity consists into a daily, accurate finishing process to positively resolve all the project’s aspects and issues.

LUALDI HAS PROMOTED THE EXHIBITION ENTITLED “ABITARE CANGIARI - ETICA E DESIGN” Design and fashion have merged together once again. And this time, it has been for a special exhibition of great social impact, even in ethical terms. The true top player at the exhibition has been Cangiari, the first Italian brand of high-quality ethical fashion which makes use of G.O.T.S. certified organic materials/fabrics only, and which can rely on a consolidated cooperative supply chain - a social working environment where disadvantaged people are employed. The exhibition’s message has been ethical too: a refined, organic and sustainable lifestyle, imbued with the values of each product from GOEL business (a Cooperative Business Group based in Calabria, Italy). This brand’s history is particularly interesting, with important cultural developments. Cangiari has succeeded in recovering and enhancing the traditional heritage design of hand-made Calabria textile works from GreekCalabria and Byzantine origins, by saving a complex form of art from oblivion. These works and techniques were orally handed down from mother to daughter, through old women called “majistre” (i.e., teachers), singing lullabies and old chants denominated “nenie”.

There are as many as 1800 threads to be inserted in the typical Calabria loom heddle. This ancient art has been recovered by Cangiari, becoming an ethical and eco-friendly lifestyle brand.

During the last edition of the Fall Design Week, Lualdi - a made-in-Italy furniture design leading company - has promoted the exhibition entitled “Abitare Cangiari, etica e design” (“Living Cangiari: ethics and design”) inside its showroom. The exhibition has ended on October 20th, and it has described the brand’s weaving art through a series of videos and photos in Black and White, together with a selection of valuable hand-made clothes and articles produced by the brand itself. With the same vision used by Cangiari in the recovery of the ancient tradition, in the course of the years, Lualdi has been able to transform the family-own joinery shop into a company capable of customising its own production according to the most differentiated project needs. The meeting point for both brands is represented by the capacity of creating “unique and exclusive articles”. Throughout the exhibition, visitors have also had the opportunity of seeing the prototypes of the first home accessory collection which has been realised by the creative and production community at Cangiari, upon the completion of an innovative experimental LabBrain Design workshop (based on the principles of the socalled ‘Design Thinking’), held last June by Patrizia Scarzella and Valentina Downey in Calabria (Italy).
