Letter from the Rector For some time, the concept of innovation has been invading the academic sphere with great force. The crisis we are going through leads us to search for new ways of doing new things. This is, without a doubt, an opportunity but also a challenge. Should an institution that is over 900 years old, and which represents in large part the cultural tradition of the Western World, do new things in new ways? The answer surely lies in properly understanding what innovation means. Our university, as a Catholic institution, knows that One only has Himself preached in all Truth the ability to make all things new. No doubt the key lies not only in attempting to do new things but especially in renewing everything on each occasion. The act of renewal is not only what one does but is also the renewal of oneself, making oneself anew in the most profound sense of the word so as to be able to offer the best of oneself.

Daniel Sada Castaño, Rector of Francisco de Vitoria University

Francisco de Vitoria University does not wish to live immersed in a dynamic of permanent change which prevents it from recognising its own essence. On the contrary, it aims to return, time and again, to the same so as to be able, in this regard, to make each occasion a renewal of its commitment. Francisco de Vitoria University renews, in each subject, in each year, in each classroom, its perspective of the tasks at hand.

are a new commitment to training in disciplines with great individual and social impact. The appointment of a new Pope has again awakened the shared joy of many of our students who decided to accompany him in his first public act. The Debating Society organized the First Inter-municipal Tournament of School Debate, widening the horizons of our classrooms and Jewish Week was the opening of a new bridge between brothers.

The Doctoral Theses of Miguel Osorio, Carmen Romero and José Luis Parada draw upon a new perspective of their respective subjects. The Psychology Degree and the Joint Degree in Employment Relations Law and Human Resources

For one more year, we wish to make a record of our mission within these pages. Each one of the activities herein is the fruit of a renewed effort to look at the reality of our students and our world with fresh eyes. Francisco de Vitoria University Report 2012-2013  | 3

Engaged Educational Community INTEGRAL EDUCATION at UFV This is a responsibility embraced by each and every member of the Educational Community.

Student societies

Social action “Contact with the student is the key element to our educational project. This contact comes about when you, as a professor grow along with the student, when you meet along a common path, because when you reach this meeting point with the student, there is growth for all involved. In turn, just as we have been accompanied at some point in our lives, our students can accompany someone one day. Therefore, mutual growth takes place, although we begin from different points of reference. It is the giving to the other that our project advocates Laura Martín Martínez in such a manner that the integral Most Highly-valued Professor, development of the student can 2012-2013 Academic Year take place”. 6  |  Francisco de Vitoria University Report 2012-2013

As part of the educational programme, our students participate in professional internships in order to experience what they are taught in the classroom and have an initial contact with the working world before finishing their studies. Every year, new collaboration agreements are signed with businesses.

Javier Sánchez Mesa, former student of Computer Engineering and entrepreneur - www.behappy.co

“UFV puts the tools within your reach which you need in order to enter the business world. The training is practical and up-to-date and the result was that I had no problem in finding work, despite the crisis. After finishing Computer Engineering, a classmate and I decided to set up our own company, BeHappy, which is aimed at business integration on the internet, making mobile technologies and the web easy for companies. Two years later, we have over ten employees and are working on a number of projects for UFV and we have customers in Asia, America and Europe” Francisco de Vitoria University Report 2012-2013  | 11

Educational Project The student is at the centre of the entire educational process. Since its founding nineteen years ago, UFV has been working with students to help them improve skills which will allow them to to contribute to society wherever they go. Every year, the University, through the Optimus Prize, recognises the merits of the most outstanding student in each course.

Laura Martínez Prat and Mar Cabeza Cabrerizo, both Biotechnology students, jointly received the Optimus Prize for 2013 for having taken full advantage of their university and academic life in a special manner. Laura Martínez Prat

“At this University, you have a treasure chest full of gold coins and it is up to you and only you whether you decide to take them or not. Each one of these coins is an opportunity to find yourself, to be a better professional and a better person. What is more, these coins aren’t only subjects, teaching aids, activities and good practices but also people around you, such as class mates, teachers and tutors who help you along the way to advance in both, your private and university life”.

“The UFV offers a model of university which not only attempts to give the student necessary tools to be able to carry out their professional activity in a satisfactory manner, but also offers a training and development model in many other aptitudes, which are more important and valuable than knowing how to analyse the genome, write a news article, or predict the costs of a project or product. It aims to develop those aptitudes which are necessary to achieve our objectives in life, learning from and with other people, and above all, to be happy. In total, the UFV is committed to excellence, in the face of the dominant trend towards mediocrity, as a motor for change and improvement in society. In my view, this is a model to be followed and encouraged”. 12  |  Francisco de Vitoria University Report 2012-2013
