Did you know… In an average lifetime a person will walk the equivalent of 5 times around the equator. RESNET NEWS The team would like to report that the £500 donated to the Braunstone Adventure Playground in honour of the late Janet Statham. The money is going to fund a day trip to Skegness for the children which was one of Janets favourite places. It was decided the fund was to remember all the work Janet had done on the estate campaigning for children’s services. The Residents’ network has been busy organising a number of activities such as the Treasure Trail to be held at the Braunstone Adventure Playground in the first week of the summer holidays. Along with a subsided family day trip to ‘Plantasia’, which saw 44 local resident’s have a day out in the countryside; exploring mazes and meeting farmyard animals. The Garage Sale is still continuing to increase its sales in creative ways, to raise more funds to help support the community. School uniforms, have especially gone down a treat over the summer months. The team have been over whelmed with the amount of donations of clothes, shoes, toys and bric-a-brac and would like to thank the generous public for supporting our causes. As always, were are looking for volunteers to help us develop our community business further. If you are interested please call: 0116 223 2256 to speak to the Neighbourhood Support Team.

Old Newtonians RFC is a

community focused Rugby Club based on Hinckley Road, Leicester Forest East. We had a successful 2017/18 season winning matches and fundraising for local causes. We have a number of senior mens and ladies teams, plus minis. We are always looking for new players so if you are interested, please contact us via our website: http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/oldnewtonians/ Old Newtonians runs with motto of ‘Not for us but those who follow!’ so you know we will always put the community first, above our own fame!

Treasure Trail Thanks to The Residents’ Network Team, The Treasure Trail was a successful event carried out at the Braunstone Adventure Playground. Young people aged 6 to 15 years enjoyed a range of activities such as summer themed treasure hunt with fun prizes, a bug hunt and ‘Isla stones’ painting. Which was inspired by Isla Tansey who started a campaign to decorate stones and hide them with the hope of putting a smile on the face of the person, that finds it. A Pinata stuff with goodies created excitement as to who would break it open along, with a feast with healthy foods. The event gave an opportunity to young people to meet their friends in a fun and safe environment during their summer holidays.

Police News The team have recently started carrying out street consultations across the Braunstone & Rowley Fields area. With a view to speaking to local residents PS 1272 and getting to know Wayne Chapman what issues they think we should be tackling in the area. We are currently tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) in the area of Gaddesby Avenue after reports of racial abuse, threats, damage, street drinking and drug abuse. A police investigation is under way and a number of arrests have been made in the area. We continue to work with our partners to resolve the issue. We continue to have reports of motorcycles being ridden around the area by youths, some of which are not wearing helmets. We continue to request that members of the public report incidents to the Police by calling 101. We are currently running an Operation to target this issue, officers in plain clothes and uniform will be patrolling and targeting known offenders. So far, we have had a brilliantly hot summer and it looks to continue, we are all busy and we would like to take the time to remind residents to secure doors and windows if you are leaving your home unattended, no matter how short the time may be. Check out our facebook and twitter pages to see more of what the team are actively doing in Braunstone Park & Rowley Fields. @LPBraunstoneRowley OR Braunstone and Rowley Fields Police on Facebook.

Friends of Highway Spinney (FOHS) News Since the last edition of the Braunstone Alert we have been busy preparing for our Britain in Bloom, ‘it’s your neighbourhood assessment’. Our main project this year is to improve the Wyatt Close entrance. Members have cleared away the undergrowth which, has enabled them to repaint the entrance. Two ‘Information Posts’ have also been freshened up. We have been very fortunate to engage with the Leicester City Council Neighbourhood Improvement Team. These have been invaluable in clearing away the undergrowth by the railings on the pavement, either side of the Wyatt Close entrance. Following this, they have prepared and repainted the railings along this stretch, with FOHS providing the paint and brushes. It is now looking very smart! We also met one afternoon with Nick Packham from Urban Buzz who brought along plug plants of St John’s Wort, Red Campion and Wood Anemone Rhizomes. These we planted in the Spinney, in the area adjacent to the Wyatt Close entrance. Members also attended the AGM of ‘Knighton Wild’ with Sally Cunningham doing a talk entitled Ecological Gardening. Ecological gardening is about how to grow a healthy garden whilst being aware of your actions as a gardener on the wider environment. In her words ‘your garden should not just buzz, but shrill, squirm and wiggle!’ We have been to an IYN Gathering at Evington House where Mick Eaton showed us how to look after our secateurs, followed by a very informative tour of the park. After this we returned to the house to receive information and tips about our forthcoming assessments. We have also been on a wonderful tour of The Belgrave Hall Gardens and House. We are finally on Facebook! Please have a look – you will find us under our name of ‘Friends of Highway Spinney.’ It is regularly updated with information and photos. Lastly, I would like to inform you of our Annual Fungi Walk which will be on Friday 28th September 2018 meeting at Wyatt’s Close at 2 pm. This will be led once again by Fungi expert Richard Iliffe. Please contact me if you would like to book a place as spaces are very limited, email: janicekeithlock@hotmail.com or phone: 0116 291 7121. Janice Lock, Events Secretary

Commomoration to 82nd Airborne Division On Thursday 16th August, Braunstone History Group commemorated The 82nd Airborne Division with their annual service. The day has been celebrated since the late 1990’s to remember the ‘All American’ soldiers. The service was held in the Walled Garden on Braunstone Park, where the Division set up camp back in World War 2.

Helen Catterwell (History Group Chair) said ‘the service was thought provoking, it involved all areas of the community and celebrated everybody connected to the Division.’

Autumn Chutneys By Caroline Cutting

Pumpkin Chutney

Green Tomato Chutney

Ingredients:

Ingredients: • 2 ½kg green (unripe) tomatoes – you can throw in some red ones too. • 500g finely chopped onion • 1 rounded tablespoon of salt • 500g sultanas • 500g cooking apples • 500g light brown sugar • 1.14 litres Cider Vinegar. Method 1. Slice the tomatoes finely and layer with onions in a large bowl, sprinkling salt on top of each layer. Cover & leave overnight. 2. Next day, chop the sultanas using a large sharp knife, then peel, core and chop the apples. Put the sugar and vinegar into a large pan and bring to the boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the sultanas and apples and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Strain the tomatoes and onions in a colander but don’t rinse them. Tip them into the pan with the apples and sultanas and bring back to the boil. 4. Simmer for about an hour, stirring occasionally until the mixture is thick and pulpy. Transfer to warmed jars and cover with lids. Will keep unopened in the cupboard for 6 months plus, store in the fridge once opened.

• • • • • • • • • • •

1kg diced pumpkin or butternut squash 1 medium onion 1 inch of a piece of ginger, grated 3 cloves of garlic, grated or crushed 500g sugar 1tsp salt ½ tsp chilli flakes 3 cardamom pods 5 peppercorns 250ml cider vinegar 1tsp black onion seeds

Method 1. Crack the cardamom pods open to remove the seeds, throw away the shells. Grind the seeds, together with the chilli flakes and peppercorns – you can use the bottom end of a rolling pin for this. Toast the crushed seeds in large pan until they are warm but not crispy or burnt. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients - except the sugar – to the pan along with 250ml of water and simmer over a medium heat for 30 minutes, stirring frequently. 3. Add the sugar to the pan and stir until completely dissolved. Leave to simmer for a further hour, stirring every now and then. If the chutney looks too dry add a little more water. If too watery, then simmer for a little longer. 4. The pumpkin should be tender at this stage, so now you can decide the finished texture of your chutney. Left as it is it’s quite chunky but if you would prefer it smooth then puree it in a blender or mash with a potato masher to break the chunks down a little. 5. Pot up into clean, warm jars, leave to cool completely before putting on the lids. Store for two weeks or so before eating to allow the flavours to develop. Store in the fridge once opened.

Braunstone Foodshare Updates Braunstone Foodshare has now been incorporated in to the core B-inspired offering in response to the new data protection act. We are still going to be led by multiple partners and will be holding the first ‘Braunstone Foodshare Steering Group’ on: Monday 17th December at 10.30am. Braunstone Foodshare would like to thank the community for their generous donations of tins of dog food and for £137.15 cash donations at the ‘Bark on the Park’ event. It is great to see such community spirit supporting worthy local causes such as the RSPCA and ourselves. Foodshare is getting ready for the annual ‘Harvest Festival’ where the community donates a range of non-perishable food items to support local causes in Braunstone. If you are interested in getting involved you can drop food off at local schools, churches, community centres or to the Neighbourhood Support Base on 45 Wellinger Way, Braunstone, Leicester, LE3 1RG.

Power to Change & Community Business B-inspired has secured another community asset... One of Braunstone’s most loved Youth Centres will now be managed by B-inspired. Leicester City Council has offered ‘The Grove’ to B-inspired as a ‘Community Asset Transfer’ as part of the city council’s Transforming Neighbourhood Services Programme. Things you have told us you want so far... B-inspired will work with the local community to develop a lively hub of activity. We will work with Street Vibe (who currently operate out of the building) to offer more services and activities for young people. Along, with working with local football teams, dance clubs and fitness classes to host a range of multi-sporting activities on the site. This is to encourage more young people to get active and to support them in making better lifestyle choices for the future. The Grove will also play host to facilities and services, to be used by the whole community. The building will provide space for community groups to hire at a reasonable price, provide access to IT facilities, offer training to support residents with a range of different endeavours and be host to a new community café / restaurant. It’s still quite early for us to give you more details at present. However, be assured that we will keep you informed of our developments and will be listening to local resident’s needs, wants and desires as we develop this amazing asset in to a Community Hub. Angie Wright, B-inspired Chief Officer told us: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been approved to take over The Grove as a Community Asset Transfer. The City Council have put faith in us to work with the community to make things happen in this building, which has sadly been underused for a few years. Working with local Football Teams and Community Groups we will be able to develop lots of activities that local people have asked for. We hope to bring in funding to improve and develop the facilities and will be asking for you to share all those brilliant skills and talents we know are in Braunstone, to help make things happen. Look out for more news!”.

Power to Change & Community Business Pet Service Consultations From ‘Bark in the Park’ Braunstone residents told us these would be the pet related services you would want to see come from a new community business. Farewell Braunstone Blues In May 2015, The Braunstone Blues were established. A dedicated team consisting of a mixture of Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). 999 demand data from all three services was analysed and it was found that the small geographical area of Braunstone produced close to 4,600 999 calls every year. This was roughly 56% EMAS, 40% Police, and 4% Fire. With the population of the area being 15,700 people living in 6,000 homes, it was shown to be the highest area of demand in all of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The Blues have worked with partners and residents of Braunstone to deliver a healthier, safer and more secure community initative. Raising awareness and directing residents to appropriate services via a home visits and delivering appropriate campaigns, to reduce the number of emergency calls in the area. The Blues have four main areas of work; Home Visits, Community Events, working with high demand users and running Life Skills sessions in the community. After 3½ years, the project is sadly ending in September. The Blues have definitely made their mark in Braunstone and will be sadly missed by all whose lives they changed for the better. We wish you all the best for the future and want to say a huge thank you on behalf of the whole community.

Braunstone Health and Social Care Centre Back in 2004, B-inspired (formally Braunstone Community Association) funded the building of the Braunstone Health and Social Care Centre on Hockley Farm Road, Leicester; for the local community. This was through the Labour Governments’ ‘New Deal for Communities’ funding which aimed to improve the lives of people in Braunstone over a sustained period of time. The funding was managed by ASRA housing (now PA Housing) who went on to own and manage the building up until last month, in trust for the community. On the 3rd July 2018, PA Housing kindly released and transferred the asset to The Braunstone Foundation (the charity name of b-inspired). This will allow B-inspired to have autonomy over its legacy, management of the building and have opportunities to develop more community-based services for Braunstone residents. Angie Wright, Chief Officer of B-inspired said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for B-inspired to link the Health Centres Services, with the other support services B-inspired currently offer to improve the lives of Braunstone residents.” Nothing is changing for registered patients. The services and high-quality health care will remain the same. The only thing that has changed is the ownership and the management of the building, which is now a part of B-inspired. The building will still have the Apple a Day Café, the GP Practice, Health Service / Support Teams and a Chemist. As an organisation we are incredibly proud to take over such an amazing asset in the community and welcome three new staff members to the B-inspired team. The team as a whole, are looking forward to working with various B-inspired teams more effectively. They are excited by the new opportunities it holds for the Health Centre and the positive impact it can make in Braunstone.
