If you are fortunate enough to be surrounded by great friends and a loving family this holiday season, as I am, they will top your list of what to be thankful for. But no one’s list should end there. Personally, I

appreciate the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Summer Ceylon iced tea and all the caffeine it delivers. Then there’s college football on Saturdays, my sleepfacilitating white-noise machine, Dentyne Pure peppermint gum, my filledto-bursting iPod and the stack of books waiting on my bedside table. I could go on and on, but the point is, it’s important to acknowledge the little things that help you get through the day. As we enter the season of gimme-gimme, don’t forget to take a second to appreciate what you’ve already got.

Happy Holidays, Michelle Burgess Editor-in-Chief

Featured Contributors We asked this month’s Featured Contributors about their holiday memories and whether they were naughty or nice…

When Jessie Worger isn’t busy writing for azTeen, she is busy tearing down the field as a member of the Highland Hawks soccer team. Based on what she says about her childhood, it’s good that Jessie found a way to channel her energy. “When I was little, the house was my playground,” she says. “Kitchen counters were perilous mountains, couches were boats, the spaces beneath beds were caves, and I was an adventurous explorer. My mom told me I was a naughty child because I could find my way into anything and everything, especially things that would cause a mess. Once when my parents had supposedly tucked me into my crib, I climbed over the bars and crawled into the crafts room. There, I found a wonderful bucket of purple paint and lathered myself head to toe in it. By the time my mom walked into the room I was a purple monster. If curiosity makes you naughty, I was definitely a naughty child.” Chaparral senior Jimmy Abarikwu, however, is a different story. According to Jimmy, he was an absolute angel as a child. “When I was a kid, I was most definitely a nice guy,” he says. “I was very kind and helpful, always helping out in class and playing nicely on the playground during recess. I had lots of friends, and girlfriends too. I never got into trouble with them, but we still had lots of fun.” Jimmy is an azTeen model and Street Team member, but it’s in his role as the azTeen Wolf at the azHallowTeen Bash in this issue’s Caught on Camera that he had to let go of the nice guy within and let loose his inner beast. Bash guests were happy to see that as the wolf, Jimmy was just the right mix of naughty and nice.

superman Joe Brooks’s folksy vibe crosses the pond

Myspace has had both a negative and a positive effect on society over the years. For UK native Joe Brooks, however, this powerful site is the secret weapon behind the start of his highly accelerating career. After the first release of his songs, the mellow, melodious Brit’s Myspace popularity grew along with his international popularity. His brand new album, Constellation Me, demonstrates why Brooks’ success is no surprise. Recently, azTeen caught up with Joe to talk about life, death, and making it big (and keeping it that way). : What is your writing process like? JB: Superman was written six years ago. It had around 10 million plays on Myspace, which is the reason why my Myspace became so big. I wrote it with a couple of songwriters from the UK which have become good friends of mine ever since. I don’t know about you, but as a guy in high school, there’s always that one person that you like that you’d love to be on a date but they’re “out of your league” and seen as the popular one or the beautiful one. So it’s about this girl who’s been my best friend ever since and it was about her and not being able to have her when I was younger – around 16. It’s basically about if I were a superhero how I’d be able to get her. : What are the first five words that you think of when I say ‘Arizona’? JB: The Grand Canyon, the desert (laughs), sunsets, Frank Lloyd Wright, would I be correct? Would I be correct if I said that there is a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright stuff in Arizona? Yeah. JB: There you go. I guess I’m not too stupid after all (laughs). And I guess I also think of stars. I can’t wait to be out in the middle of America and be able to look at the sky and see it in a way that I’ve never seen it before. It’s going to be incredible. : If you could have invented one thing, what would it be?

Naughty & Nice 2010

JB: Wow, that’s a tough question. I probably would have invented the car. No, I would have probably invented the Dyson Hoover — they made so much money after that (laughs). : Do you prefer UK artists or American? JB: I don’t think there’s a possible answer because I like a lot of both and I also dislike a lot of both. I like the originality and the eccentricity that comes out of the UK. There are a lot of cool bands and sounds that come out of there, but at the same time, there are so many talented singer/songwriters and a lot of different genres in America. : What is the life of Joe Brooks like? JB: Right now it’s really busy (laughs). Pretty much just partying. No, I’m kidding. I live in LA and I go back and forth from the UK to LA and I work extremely hard, I’m not going to lie. While on the road, I get to experience a lot of experiences. I get to do a lot of industry functions and events, I write, I do a lot of the online stuff—a big passion of mine is Photoshop and graphic design. Just recently I did the Myspace and the website. Basically everything that goes into building a brand, that’s my job, I do it 24/7. Wow, I don’t know any band that puts that much effort into what they do. JB: Yeah, neither do I, and it’s slightly frustrating sometimes, I’ve got to be honest (laughs). You know, so many

bands and so many artists fade away very quickly, and I feel that the harder I work, the longer I’ll stick around. So that’s the plan. There is no “5 steps to making it” and each day is different. One thing I have to advise to anybody is that you need to be completely open to be able to change in a split second. You need to be able to change plans, jump on a flight, travel here, travel there, cause if you’re willing to do that, a lot more people will want to work with you and you will receive a lot more opportunities because you’re just on it. : Tell me something that none of your fans know. JB: I have two six-by-seven-foot paintings in my apartment. One of them is called, Paint On Canvas One and the other is called, Paint On Canvas Two and what I basically did is I bought these two half-priced canvases, chucked a load of paint on them, and I stuck them on my wall. People come over and ask me where I got them and how much I paid for them and literally all I did was just splash paint all over them. So basically I create art for my walls that I don’t think are great at all (laughs).

: If you were on death row, what would be your last meal? JB: Firstly, I would have to ask you why I’m on death row (laughs) and secondly, I’d probably go with fish and chips. It’s got to be fish and chips with a splash of vinegar from the “chippy” at the top of my road in Southampton and mushy peas. Have to have the mushy peas. Love the mushy peas. : What is one band that you truly respect? JB: The Killers, 100 percent. Brandon Flowers is my man crush. He is one of my idols and I think he is amazing. I try to take a lot of influences from him, you’d probably see that in my music or in my performance but he does influence me a lot. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him at the ASCAP Awards and it was great. He’s really shy, really quiet, and smaller than me, which is unbelievable because I’m like a stick. He was just a really nice guy. Be sure to check Joe Brooks and his music out at myspace.com/joeborooksmusic.

Pat: With our previous album, Come Around, we had to write it and record it immediately after we had signed with Epitaph. We wrote it in one month and recorded it the next. Everything was pretty rushed and it turned out pretty awesome, but on this album we had a full year to write it. We are all really young dudes and have experienced growing up for the past two years on the road and dealing with many real-life situations, falling in and out of love, so we had so much more to write about on this album lyrically. It came together very naturally.

It’s a natural thing that comes easier with personal experience. Be sure to check out Sing It Loud at myspace.com/singitloud

If you have ever read a story in azTeen and thought “I can do that!” we want to hear from you. If you read us and say “Why isn’t there more about my school in here?” we want to hear from you. Through Jan. 14, azTeen is accepting applications for staff positions. Applicants must be graduating between 2012 and 2015 and attend an Arizona high school. We are looking for writers and photographers, and also for correspondents who will act as ambassadors for their school and ensure its representation in our pages. Previous experience isn’t necessary, and writing ability is secondary to enthusiasm and dependability. Want to be involved? Visit azTeenMagazine. com and click on “Join the Mag” for application instructions.

If you were plugged into azTeen’s Facebook over the past couple of months, you could’ve won a limo for Homecoming, movie tickets, a case of Muscle Milk, dinners, clothes, jewelry, gift cards… you get the idea. You would have been the first to know details about the azHallowTeen Bash, had a chance to meet Rob Dyrdek and gotten to ogle some high school sports hotties. Don’t miss another contest or alert! Log on right now and connect with azTeen Mag; our link is http://www.facebook.com/azteen.

Nominations should include the names, titles or grades, school community and contact info for both the person being nominated and the nominator, as well as a paragraph on why this person is deserving of a HOT 100 recognition. Winners will be profiled in azTeen’s HOT 100 Issue in May. Deadline for submissions is February 20; they may be emailed to azTeena@azTeenMagazine. com, with “HOT 100 nomination” in the subject line. 5Q for RJ Mitte He’s a cast member on TV’s edgiest show and fledgling movie star. But this Louisiana native, 18, has more on his mind than acting Besides the upcoming fourth season of AMC’s Breaking Bad, in which you play Walter White Jr., what else do you have going on right now? “Since early September, I’ve been in Portland, Oregon, filming a movie called The House of Last Things. It’s a suspense/thriller (and) my first film. It’s an indie, so there have been some challenges, and I love that; it’s exciting. Plus I get to do my own stunts which is really bad-ass. You can go to my Facebook page and see some behindthe-scenes pictures from the film that the crew has posted.”

1

Your character on Breaking Bad has cerebral palsy, and in real life you have a milder version. That prompted your involvement with I AM PWD; what can you tell us about it? “I AM PWD (Inclusion in the Arts

2

and Media of Performers with Disabilities) is a Tri-Union campaign that works on behalf of performers with disabilities, advocating inclusion and accuracy in the media. For me personally, I doubt I would have had the chance to do what I’m doing today if someone else hadn’t already spoken up and made some noise. I’m just doing what I can.” What advice would you give to teens who dream of acting as a career? “First, I would say, ask yourself why you want to become an actor. It’s not as easy or as glamorous as it seems. It takes a lot of devotion and determination, as well as patience, preparation and perseverance. If it is the career path you choose, don’t expect overnight success. Stay focused, find great acting coaches and learn as much as you can.”

3

my

car

What advice do you have for teenagers in general? It can be about anything at all – maybe something you wish you’d been told but had to learn the hard way? “Education should be your numberone back-up plan. It will help you with whatever life brings your way. Set your goals high and stay focused. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.”

4

What else do you want people to know about you, your work or your life? “I hope to encourage others to never give up on what they want in life. You can reach any goal you set for yourself if you educate yourself and work hard. I also hope that teens recognize and take action against bullying. Don’t be afraid to speak up and make a difference.”

5

“I love my car because I bought a 1972 Ford Bronco Sport from Craigslist and completely rebuilt it. Everything that changed I did myself, and after working so hard on a car, I guess it became a part of me. Nobody has a car quite like mine.” —David Cutler, Highland ‘11

When I was 13 I begged for a camera for Christmas. I had two presents left to open, neither of which looked like they could be a camera. At that moment I started to realize I wasn’t getting the camera I had set my hopes on. I began to open my very last present and burst into tears of happiness – I got the camera I had wanted so badly. 20

Our holiday models? Oh, they were naughty by nature. But photographer Scott Foust tamed them at his Scottsdale studio, Image-Industry Photography & Design during a super-long but fun, fun, fun shoot right before Halloween. Check out interviews and outtakes on our Facebook.

Brody Kade Longo Basha ‘13 So, are you naughty or are you nice? Generally, I can do both. I’m a good student, a great friend and what I believe to be a pretty decent son/older brother. But I am also a teenage boy, so I most definitely have my naughty moments ... Why would Santa put coal in your stocking this year? Well, I’m not tryin’ to get myself in trouble here… but Santa would most likely put coal in my stocking this year for losing a pair of shoes, some money and my retainer for the second time. If you were very, very good, what will you find wrapped up for you? I would final all the clothes and shoes I could ever ask for! I love clothes, sometimes even more than people. Also some cold hard cash – nothing beats American currency.

you stand on the hot-button issue of illegal immigration, it is impossible not to be moved by the stories of the teenage undocumented immigrants in Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth. Arizona is the most visible national symbol of this controversy, which affects 65,000 teenagers who can’t enjoy the parts of high school most kids take for granted – prom, dating, planning for college. Our students know something new is going to come, so it gets ‘em excited. But it all starts at the heart of dressing up in green and gold and going all out! We all have heart and help use it to fuel up our panther spirit! It’s our pride in everything we do that keeps it going!” – Lea Munoz, Peoria ‘12

diggin’ it shineon

Gilbert junior Macey Gardner is arguably the best outside hitter in Arizona and already committed to playing for ASU in the fall of 2012. The 6-footer is a superstar on her Junior Olympics club team as well, but those who know her say that her skill is matched only by her humility. On the eve of the state 5A-1 playoffs, she spoke to azTeen about her life and her future.

What’s your biggest pet peeve? When people eat, drink and swallow very loudly. My dad and brothers eat loudly, but that’s how I learned to swing hard!

So, how did you choose ASU? I was so blessed to have many choices and was very interested in UCLA, Pepperdine, Washington and UC Irvine. However, I chose to stay near my family, friends and church and play the sport I love near the people I love. Coach Jason Watson was a huge part of that decision. He is building the kind of program that really hits home with me. I would be so proud to be a part of making ASU a place that is known for its volleyball.

Are yo naughty, u or are you n For sure nice. C ice? that all the tim oach tells me the best out of e. I try to expect best in others myself and see the an without being d to win and lead ho just enjoy wor stile. I guess I king than being loudhard more probably need . But I to be louder!

What songs, snacks, routines or rituals get you pumped up before a game? The dinner before a game day, I eat pasta and salad to get some major carbs for stamina. For warm-up music, I like the old-school ‘80s. I think I would have enjoyed the ‘80s. But more importantly, I make time to sit by myself in silence, say a prayer and think about the upcoming game.

ribe Desc r you y in lit ona ss. pers ds or le r lm a o c 10 w , yet with a d n n a e v t e ri D y. Velv intensit l, baby! Stee

What’s a secret talent, fear or wish of yours that very few people know about? Fear of needlessly coming up short in a game, or in life.

Why is Gilbert Tiger girls volleyball consistently so good? Quite simply, our coaches and anyone who commits to the program commits to working hard. Every girl in the program, from the freshman team to varsity, works very hard, and I am really fortunate to be around some amazing girls.

Are you highmaintenance or low-maintenance? My brothers, Kyler and Brock, and sister, Tatum, would say high-maintenance, but I think I am pretty lowmaintenance.

Do you eat, sleep and breathe your sport, or do you have time for other things? My first priority is my relationship with my Heavenly Father. I also love my time with family and friends and work at Firehouse Subs. I am gone most days from7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. or later.

Do you have a favorite quotation? I have a couple that I hear in my home frequently: “Don’t sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate” and Psalm 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? If you know what’s right, do it! azTeenmagazine.com

studette. In each issue, one standout student gives the scoop on life at his or her school. This month, Millennium senior, IB candidate and varsity cheerleader Alyssa Manke tells us some Tiger tales…

Downtime:

Westgate in Glendale is where most of us hang out on Friday, Saturday nights. The selection of restuarants gives us a variety and the movies are right down the strip. Yogurtland is especially popular! It’s a nice, healthy treat. Throughout Goodyear, teens from Millennium like running at night. Lifetime Fitness is not far away, so we like to work out together. The biggest thing that we all love doing is going to support our Varsity Tiger boys on Friday nights! Afterwards, there is a kickback where we just chill at some friend’s house and party! We play many games like “Have I ever...” or Truth or Dare. During the weeknights and weekends, students go to work, literally. Millennium kids work at numerous places like Applebee’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Starbucks and In-N-Out.

Trending:

What’s in right now is the long-hair look, gel nails, beanies, silver wear, Juicy Couture, Tiffany’s, and skinny jeans. At Millennium, the biggest class taken is the psychology class. The class has over 60 students, yet we still take so much from the teacher, (Hot 100 winner) Mr. Travis Guiney. Also, the Taylor Gang and Kid Cudi are big on campus. Some kids walk around singing Kid Cudi or just screaming “Taylor Gang!” when they pass by some friends.

“When you get to college, you realize who your real friends from high school were. There’s a handful that I’m still good friends with, and others I see occasionally and it’s still like old times whenever we hang out. My relationship with my family is stronger since I’ve started college, though. I think that’s because I’m not around them so I appreciate them more.”

“College isn’t really like a huge shock from high school like many people would expect in terms of social changes. The kind of friends you kept in high school are pretty similar to the friends you will make in college, I think. There’s a great potential to meet who you want to meet. College is a very diverse place with diverse groups of people, and it really turns out the way you make it to be.”

Lindsay Jakows

“My relationship with high school friends is really almost completely lost. If it wasn’t for the casual update through facebook, it would be completely lost. It makes no difference to me though, I’ve moved on. Regarding my family, I still live at home, so things are almost the same, but I am not home very often because of school, so I see them less.”

Rob Stanford University of Redlands ‘12; is a Philosophy Major with an Asian Studies minor and an emphasis on Pre-Law

“Everything for the most part is exactly the same for me when I’m back home. It is somewhat of a relief to come home and blend right back in as if time didn’t pass while I was away.”

Pepperdine ‘12; is double-majoring in International Studies and Political Science

“I still have my two best friends from my senior year of high school. It doesn’t seem like we call or facebook enough, but we’re still really close. My family life is somewhat better because being away from them allows me to calm down and not get sucked into the drama of my dysfunctional family.”

Samantha Schwartz

UofA ‘12; is majoring in Physiology

“My relationship with my family has not changed very significantly since I have left. It is hard at times not seeing them every day, but I talk to my parents on the phone daily which helps. As for my high school friends, I do not talk to the majority of people I hung out with in high school. I have a few close friends that I still keep in touch with, but for the most part we have just grown apart.”

Emmanuell Maldonado

ASU ’12; is majoring in Business

“I can honestly say I was popular in high school. I had tons of friends then realized those same friends were not as adamant about college as I am....therefore those same friends are not around today. In college, it is wise to be-friend people with your same interests. If they weigh you down, how will you climb? My relationship with my family has nothing but improved, matured, and the level of respect has risen, which is always nice.”

Corinne Solheid

University of Minnesota ’13; is majoring in Biochemistry/ Pre-Med and minoring in Spanish

“I have been lucky to stay in touch with my high school friends over the first year of college. I think that facebook and texting helps a lot with that. This summer, we are all hanging out again at home just like we always have. I hope that I will continue to stay friends with my high school friends for the rest of my life. My relationship with my family has not changed all that much, either. I have always been pretty independent from my family, so going away wasn’t that much of a change. We still get along, so coming home for the summer has not been a very big change either.” 38

“Most of my high school friends went to different colleges, so I really only get to see them during winter or summer breaks. I almost prefer that I don’t see them very often, because then we can just enjoy the time we spend together without having to worry about all the “drama” from high school. When you only get to see your friends a few times every six months, gossip and rumors just don’t seem to matter as much. Plus, you never get bored listening to each other’s stories because they’re new to you. I’ve enjoyed watching my friends from high school find their own places at their schools or in their jobs. It’s corny, but I’m proud of what my friends are doing out in the world. I also appreciate my parents more now that I’m not “living under their roof.” Growing up, it was hard to get to know my parents as people, because they were authority figures. Now that I’ve gained some independence I can take a step back from the parent-child relationship and get to know my parents as actual people. I also have two older siblings, and they’ve always treated me like the baby of the family. Going to college has helped to establish my role as an adult in our family, and that’s been a really nice change.”

Zachary Gastony, Texas A&M University

“Howdy, y’all! So far college life is pretty great. Not too sure where I left off last month, but I’ll try and give y’all the scoop. I really underestimated how hard my classes would be, especially math and physics. I spent eight hours before each test studying like crazy only to completely bomb my first set of exams! Now I’ll be stuck all semester having to pull my grades up. The party scene is pretty awesome, and no matter what, somewhere, someone is having a kick-ass party and my new friends always know where it is. Other than that, I miss home more than I thought I would, especially when I had to do my laundry last week and was forced to operate the laundry machine. That’s about it, thanks and Gig ‘Em Aggies!”

freshmen “First semester is almost over. How’s it going so far?”

Hillary Burgess, The University of Texas

“I got into the Texas Wrangler Darlins, the organization with whom I fell in love at first sight! There are 15 girls in my pledge class, and I get along really well with all of them. We have a lot of requirements our first semester, such as volunteer hours and early-morning jogs, but it’s been a lot of fun. Also, Matt and I just got pet baby hedgehog I named Snooki. She is absolutely adorable and will help me de-stress (they are illegal in Arizona, FYI). Overall, I’m very busy, but having an amazing time. Hook ‘em, Horns!”

Vivian Padilla, ASU

“College is awesome! I’ve gotten to know so many new people, and it’s always so fun to go to school every single day. I’ve gotten involved with student government, as well as with my college’s newspaper, The State Press. My schedule is so laid-back, but I’m a busy journalism student who’s absolutely loving every aspect of being a Sun Devil. Some days I don’t have class, but I’m out and about interviewing people. It’s something that I’m enjoying; just the other day I interviewed someone who appeared in MTV’s The Real World. It’s crazy how exciting college is, and I can’t believe that a few months ago I was worrying over it! I also love jumping on the light rail or on the ASU shuttle and traveling over to the Tempe campus and taking in the college-town environment. Fork ‘em, Devils!”

Emily Piskulick, Gonzaga University

“So far, Gonzaga has been incredible. My roommate, Kennedy, and I have been getting along so well. We have perfected a really good roommate balance. Sometimes we do a lot together and other times we live our own lives, which is the perfect way to not get sick of the other person. My classes have been challenging but well worth the effort. I’ve been getting involved, too – I joined the Young Democrats club and HERO (Helping Educate Regarding Orientation). Between schoolwork, parties and the different clubs I participate in, my days are always exciting and packed full of entertaining things to do! I just can’t wait for basketball season to start. Go Zags!”

Brittany Hardy, Princeton University

“As I write this, freshman parent weekend is only a week away. I’m really excited to see my family and to do some winter shopping. It’s getting kind of cold here in Jersey, a complete 180 from Arizona. It has been raining for the past two weeks, but I love the fact we can wear adorable rain boots and whip out colorful umbrellas. However, the rain does make it difficult to get to and from classes quickly. I don’t like to have gaps in my schedule, so I scheduled all of my classes 10 minutes apart, and for the most part, I’m only in class on Mondays and Wednesdays. My favorite classes are Spanish and Poetry. I’ve been taking Spanish for a few years now, so it’s mostly just a review class for me. I love my poetry class because it’s relaxing to sit and analyze the beautiful ways English can be manipulated. I’ve joined the Princeton Association of Black Women (PABW) and its sister group, Woman to Woman. These groups are support/discussion groups for women on campus. My religion is a big part of my life, so I make sure that I devote time to attend Bible study every Monday. Outside of school, I’ve just started one of my PR internships for a company that ensures things deemed “non-recyclable” (diapers, drink pouches, markers) are recycled. There are even some random guests; Lupe Fiasco came in today during a lecture, so everyone was pretty excited to meet him and hear him speak.”

Corey edwards, UofA “I’m halfway through the semester and just took a bunch of midterms. I

plan to do a little better next time; I need to actually study in college! A few of my classes are pretty cool though, and my chemistry professor is great. Mythology is interesting but there are a lot of material and readings to remember. In this picture, my frustration with that class can be seen. Aside from classes and studying, I’ve been having a fun time hanging out with my friends away from home. Every Tuesday night we attend an improvisation show in the student union and we go to the football games we can get into. Zona Zoo! This semester I became a member of the club Alpha Epsilon Delta. Doctors and medical students talk to us at meeting and we participate in fun socials, fundraisers and service. So far my freshman year has been awesome and I know it will continue to be. Bear down, Arizona!”

wanna be Spartan something the future is bright for Camelback students

Nestled near the foothills of beautiful Camelback Mountain and located in the backyard of the Camelback Corridor and the Biltmore, Camelback High School is truly an urban oasis of opportunity. Its breathtaking scenic mountain vistas, amazing views of the Phoenix skyline, and a recent $20 million renovation are just part of the story of CHS. The new Game/Web Design, Engineering, Architecture, Robotics and Sustainability (GEARS) Magnet puts CBHS on the forefront of the STEM Movement. Our aggressive Advanced Placement (AP) growth plan will result in 20 AP offerings by 2013. We have extensive performing and visual arts programs that offer band, guitar, drums, piano, choice, dance, drama, ceramics, drawing, AP Studio Art, and digital photography. Aside from offering every major sport, we also offer over 50 clubs that range from archery to break-dancing to fashion to hiking to chess. Our Camelback College Commons, accessible before school, during, and after school, boats ping pong tables, pool tables, air hockey tables, basketball hoops, and foosball tables. Our innovative Advisory period provides every student with instruction in organization, character, and study skills as well as an opportunity to receive academic assistance and catch up on homework during the school day. Camelback High School is dedicated to creating students of strong character, commitment, and competence in a highly supportive and rigorous, yet enjoyable, environment in pursuit of fulfilling our mission of preparing every student for success in college, career, and life. And though we speak 27 different language and come from many different culture and countries from around the globe, we are proud to be Spartans and are unified by our CHS motto, “Once and Spartan, Always a Spartan.”

what are you

thankful for this year?

“I’m thankful for friends who play in the mud with me.” --Tess Sommer, Chaparral ‘12

This year I am thankful for all of my sports-med family. Even though I spend hours and hours a day with them and sometimes hate them, I don’t know what I would do without them. --Victoria Donlon, Mountain Pointe ‘11

“I am thankful for my very best friend, Holly McConnell, without whom I would not be who I am today. She empathized with all of my trials and tribulations through the past three years and I could not be more grateful for her existence.” — Lindsay Kelley, Xavier ‘12

“I am thankful for the website TextsFromLastNight.com because it relieves me of my boredom at school.” --Allie Schoen, Arcadia ‘11

“I am thankful that I am finally a senior and have only one more year left in high school before I am out for good.” --David Bull, Chaparral ‘11

--Ilana Tasillo, Pinnacle ‘12

“I’m thankful for my whole family and for people I can trust who will never judge me.”

--Mandie McDonald, Millennium ‘13

-- Lindsay Gentrup, Campo Verde ‘12

“The thing I am most thankful for is making it through PCDS. I have been going there my whole life and I’m finally starting senior year. I have been waiting for this year since I was five.” -- Rachael Lopez, Phoenix Country Day ‘11 “I’m really thankful for my parents for helping me so much to purchase my car and everything they’ve done for me this year.” --Nicole Nowakowski, Saguaro ‘11

“I’m thankful for all my close friends who have been with me throughout high school. Without them, things would have been hella harder!” – Chelsea Regan, Horizon ‘11

“I am thankful for family. Most of my family lives in Arizona, but it is different parts of the state, so I feel fortunate that I get to see them over the holidays. I love the feeling of togetherness and unity that the holidays bring. It is so fun to have everyone all together, even if it’s just for one day.” --Shaye Cody, Chaparral ‘11

“This year I am thankful for all of the great clothes I’ve found!”

“This year I am especially thankful for words because without them there would be no such thing as expression and people would have no means to communicate their feelings or thoughts.”

“I am so unbelievably thankful for my amazing brother and parents who always support me no matter what happens.” --Taylor Sundermeier, Saguaro ‘11 azTeenmagazine.com

“I am thankful for my friends, family, the community around me and my boyfriend, Jeff, who has been by my side through it all. I couldn’t be more grateful for everything I have learned in the past year. I thank God for every day that I wake up.” -- Taylor Stephens, Xavier ‘11

“This year I’m thankful that I have such a strong support group of friends. It’s nice knowing that even though I’m going through all the stresses of senior year and college, I’m not going through it alone because my friends are always there and going through the same stuff as me.” --Molly Blevin, Xavier ‘11

“This year I’m pretty thankful for the fact that I only have one class that makes me want to rip my hair out!” --Emma Franco, Millennium ‘12
