What advice would you offer to someone who wants to become successful in commercial real estate? Learn, Learn, Learn. Commercial real estate, residential development and construction is a complex arena. Having knowledge of all aspects of development is critical. Ask a lot of questions from everyone involved, even from experts or competitors who are not in your deal.

Reynolds – a 30-year-banking veteran – leads Washington Federal’s commercial real estate division across Arizona. Since managing the team in 2013, he has helped to increase the loan portfolio by more than 450% to over $500 million on commercial real estate financing, and helped to finance

well over 400 commercial properties. What professional accomplishment gives you the most pride and what makes it so rewarding? Since I’ve been in my current role, not only has our loan portfolio grown from $90 million to over a half a billion, but we did it with a core team that has been together for more than 10 years here in the Valley. We’ve won as a loyal team. What do you consider the most surprising fact about you? I moved to Arizona in 1994 and went back to school to become a teacher.

I am blessed to partner and work with the most remarkable and talented developers and real estate investors within the industry. Being able to provide creative solutions that allow these companies to grow, expand their investment portfolio while shaping the communities we live and work in is incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to become successful in commercial real estate? Arizona is both a strong and yet competitive commercial real estate market. As such, someone who wants to be a part of the CRE market (whether as an investor, developer, contractor, banker, or any other connection) they have a myriad of opportunities given the amount of growth happening in all parts of the Valley. If someone wants to break into this sector, I highly recommend spending time with one of the commercial brokerage firms and/or find an opportunity to be part of a bank or other finance group that provides funding to this area. What do you consider the most surprising fact about you? I sometimes get looks of surprise when I talk about my days as a high school hockey player and then later as a high school hockey coach.

James has arranged several billion dollars in financing transactions including thousands of multifamily units throughout the Western and Central regions of the US. James and his team are closely aligned with NorthMarq’s direct multifamily lending platform including longstanding relationships with Freddie Mac & NorthMarq’s Fannie Mae DUS platform. James’ relationships are longstanding and in several instances span 20 years and as many as 100 transactions. What professional accomplishment gives you the most pride and what makes it so rewarding? I’ve had the privilege of mentoring several of my clients/associates’ sons throughout the years and it’s been extremely fulfilling to see them now leading successful careers. What do you consider the most surprising fact about you? I woke up one day and 25 years went by and I still get excited about doing deals after all these years! We are still having lots of fun here!
