Ayrshire Cancer Support provides practical and emotional support for people affected by cancer from its dropin centres, in hospital wards across Ayrshire, and where necessary, at home. As a dedicated, local cancer support charity, we are proud to offer free support to anyone affected by cancer in Ayrshire. Now in our 39th year we have, with the support of our local community and volunteers, developed our offering to provide a range of free services including: patient transport, professional counselling, professional complementary therapies, support groups, drop-in facilities and a range of informative and educational literature about cancer, its treatment and its prevention. We have formed partnerships with NHS Ayrshire and Arran, with whom we hold a Service Level Agreement in relation to the implementation of our work and the supervision of our counselling staff.

We have partnered with Dumfries House Wellbeing Centre to provide emotional support to people affected by cancer in the Cumnock area, and with EDF Energy in Hunterston to provide cancer support services to their workforce via their cancer network. We are holders of the Volunteer Friendly Award and recognise the importance of, and value, the work our volunteers do. Our staff, board and volunteers work collaboratively for the benefit of people affected by cancer. We are forward thinking and do not underestimate the value of our work in supporting Ayrshire people affected by cancer.

Impact Statement

by David McCall, Chair (2020) Ayrshire Cancer Support has continued to grow successfully each year and has continued to support people by providing both practical help and emotional support to the rising number of people affected by cancer in Ayrshire. This includes those diagnosed with cancer, their family members, carers and the bereaved. We aim to improve the quality of life of those living with cancer and ensure that help is readily available for those who need it. The positive impact we are able to have on the community is evident in the feedback we receive, and you will see examples of this throughout this report. All of our services are provided free of charge and include: patient hospital transport, cancer nurse manager,

counselling, complementary therapies, support groups, a better health hub at Crosshouse Hospital, our own dropin centre and provision of cancer related information. Working in partnership with NHS Ayrshire & Arran helps us to deliver high quality services for those in need, and working alongside the other members of the Scottish Cancer Coalition ensures our expertise and experience contribute to the Scottish Government’s Cancer Policies for the future. Our ambition remains to build on our achievements, extend our services in line with changing demands and have a positive impact for all those who need our support.

My Story

by Donna Findlay On the 18th of April 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Hearing the word cancer was incredibly scary and this was the day that has completely changed my life. The emotional impact it has had on me and my family has been huge. Soon after my diagnosis, I went on to have a lumpectomy with lymph node removal. Thankfully the cancer hadn’t spread and was all successfully removed. This was then to be followed by 6 rounds of chemotherapy, 19 sessions of radiotherapy followed by hormone blocking medication for a further 10 years. Half way through chemo, my precious mum passed away. At this point emotionally, was the lowest I’d ever felt. This is when I considered counselling. I’d heard such good things about Ayrshire Cancer Support so when my treatment was almost finished I contacted them and made an appointment with Anna. There was part of me that was a bit apprehensive as I didn’t know what to expect. I just knew that I had to try and make sense of everything and learn how to get back to living my life. Cancer had changed things incredibly. Deciding on counselling was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As well as talking with Anna, I had some reflexology sessions with Caroline, they were fantastic.

Every session I had with Anna always made me feel so much better. She had such a good way of helping me make sense of everything. For the first time in a long time, I felt that I could get back to living my life to the full. Counselling isn’t something that anyone should feel ashamed or embarrassed about. It has helped me enormously. It’s ok to not be ok. I would recommend the services of Ayrshire Cancer Support to anyone. It is such a wonderful and worthwhile charity. The first picture of me here was taken during my last round of chemotherapy. I wore the cold cap during my 6 treatments to try and keep some of my hair. It froze my scalp to -4 degrees. It was absolutely awful. I was really not in a good place here, physically or emotionally. The second picture is me today, feeling so much more like myself. No matter how hard things get in life, with a good mind-set and support, you can get through it. I won my fight and am still here. I am so very lucky and will never take that for granted. Life is for living so don’t sweat the small stuff. Anna said to me a quote during one of my sessions and it’s so very true; “When you love what you have, you have everything”, and I certainly have.

Our Free Services

Ayrshire Cancer Support provides free practical and emotional support to anyone affected by cancer in Ayrshire. ★ Patient Transport

from home to hospital for people undergoing cancer treatment.

★ Counselling

to help people come to terms with a cancer diagnosis, either their own, or that of someone close to them.

★ Carers Groups

to provide a space for people with caring responsibilities to meet and have time out and learn new ways of coping.

★ Hospital Ward Visits

are undertaken by our complementary therapists to help alleviate the symptoms of cancer for those who are currently receiving treatment in hospital.

★ Bereavement Support

to help people who are bereaved through a cancer diagnosis.

★ Complementary Therapies

including massage, aromatherapy, reiki and hypnotherapy to help alleviate stress and anxiety and the symptoms of cancer and its treatment.

★ Workshops

including Healthy Eating and Look Good Feel Better to help cancer patients learn new techniques in a group setting.

★ Specialist Cancer Information

is provided by our Cancer Nurse, who meets with patients and their families who feel that cancer specific information in relation to their treatment would be beneficial.

★ A Drop-in Centre

is available on a non-appointment basis to allow people to engage with our services or simply to have a coffee and chat with people who may have undergone similar experiences.

★ Podiatry Service ★ Support Groups

are facilitated in our drop-in centre to provide peer support for a range of people affected by different cancer types.

Our Work in Numbers

The reach of our free services continue to grow. In total we provided 23,144 appointments or drop-in attendances. We provided 13,870 free patient journeys to hospital appointments and treatments and 9,274 therapeutic sessions. Our therapeutic and patient transport team is led by Louise Graham, Head of Cancer Support Services. Our small staff team is supported by sessional staff and volunteers.

Governance

We are governed by a Board of Directors who drive our vision and mission forward, whilst ensuring good governance. Our staff team is small and for every one member of staff we have twenty volunteers who support the delivery of our services. We believe that specific cancer related roles should be held by professional qualified staff, to ensure the safety, confidentiality and accountability of the services we provide. Our staff team appreciate the roles that our volunteers hold and their input is crucial to ensuring cohesive and consistent service delivery. We are organisational members of The Scottish Cancer Coalition, COSCA, Voluntary Health Scotland and Health & Social Care Alliance Scotland. Individual staff are also members of: Nursing and Midwifery Council, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapy, Federation of Holistic Therapies, Complementary Therapists Association, International Register of Massage Therapists, International Federation of Reflexology, National College of Hypnotherapy & Psychological Therapy, NHS Directory of Complementary and Alternative Practitioners and National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. The Future

We are passionate about developing our services throughout Ayrshire. To this end, we plan to create a new drop-in centre in Ayr which is on a par with that in Kilmarnock – a bright, purposed centre with accommodation for counselling, drop-in and complementary therapies. We also plan to stretch the reach of our services in this centre, to extend to children and young people. We have worked in recent years to grow our relationship with the NHS to reduce waiting times for people seeking psychological support and to ensure that we can continue to provide free patient transport to cancer treatment hospital appointments regardless of where they take place in the West of Scotland. We work closely with the NHS to help ensure our services can support any redesign of their cancer treatment services. We continue to seek the views and opinions of our patients and families to inform our services, and we aim to develop the scope of our feedback gathering by continuing to host a range of focus groups in each of the service areas. Ensuring that everyone who needs to use our services is aware of their existence is an important part of our future plans and we continue to develop our marketing and communication activity through a mix of channels and media. Professionalism is key to providing best practice and we continue to engage regularly with integrated joint services including the local cancer network, Scottish Cancer Network, NHS and Voluntary Action South Ayrshire. We are praised for our friendly and caring approach by our clients and the balance between professional care and the voluntary input will stand us in good stead to continue to provide quality support to people affected by cancer.

Our Volunteers

We are proud to have so many supportive volunteers who help to deliver our services Without volunteers, the level of work we could undertake would be greatly reduced. Our patient transport service is undertaken by volunteers who are co-ordinated by a staff team, who match volunteer drivers to patients and their appointments. Similarly, our drop-in volunteers meet and greet clients in our drop-in centre and provide information about the range of professional services we can offer. Our income is supported by retail volunteers as well as Ambassadors for the charity who attend cheque presentations and talks about our work to community groups. Many of our fundraising events are supported by volunteers.

We are enormously grateful to each and every one of our volunteers who in their own way enable our services to continue to be accessible and free of charge.

Our Supporters

We have many dedicated supporters throughout Ayrshire, who helped raise a total of £1,204,526. Our income continues to grow in reponse to the growing demand for our free services. Our Fundraising team is lean with 4 staff members as is our Retail Team which consists of 6 staff (F/T and P/T) and is led by Laura Brown, Head of Income and Communications. Our income is raised through multiple income streams including: legacies, inmemory donations, trusts and foundations, community fundraising, client donations and our retail operations.
