INCREASING GUN-RELATED CALLS

Waterloo Region’s violent crime rate is second highest in the Province of Ontario

Of the 12 municipal police services in the province, Waterloo Region has the second highest violent crime rate. “Over the past several weeks and months, we have responded to increasing calls involving gun violence throughout Waterloo Region,” said Chief Bryan Larkin. Since the beginning of the year, Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has responded to 10 shootings. Larkin said that these major crimes have resulted in significant pressure and demand on police resources

“To those who continue to commit senseless acts of crime in our region, it has to stop,” said Larkin. “We will not stop. We are committed to working around the clock to hold those accountable for their reckless actions against the community. We are committed to keeping Waterloo Region the thriving and vibrant community we all call home.” Anyone with any information about recent events throughout the region is encouraged to contact WRPS at 519-570-9777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

MAN IN STABLE CONDITION FOLLOWING FALL FROM AYR APARTMENT BALCONY – The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after Waterloo Regional Police were involved in a serious incident at the apartment building at 170 Northumberland Street in Ayr. According to the SIU, on Wednesday, June 22 at approximately 2:38 p.m., the police received a call about a man in distress at the apartment building. Officers arrived and entered the apartment. The man fell from the second storey balcony and landed on the ground below. The man was taken to hospital via an Ornge Air ambulance helicopter (shown at left). As of Friday, June 24, he remains in hospital in stable condition. The SIU is a provincial civilian oversight agency that investigates the circumstances involving police that result in a death or serious injury.
