February meeting of North Dumfries Heritage Preservation Society
The regular meeting of the North Dumfries Heritage Preservation Society was held at the North Dumfries Community Complex with the following members in attendance: David Pyper, Gail Rhodey, Ron Sage, Jeannine Babister, George Barrie, Rosemary Phillips, Irene Adeney, Rachel Redshaw, and Margaret McCreery. It appears that the NDHPS will be part of the township’s summer student project this year, with about two days per week of time allotted for archives. Executive members will consider the role and work for summer students. Two volunteers from Southwood Secondary School have come forward to work on a website for NDHPS. They will contribute up to 70 hours total in volunteer time in the next four years. Please forward ideas to Irene Adeney to share with the students. Adeney will discuss equipment needs with the Ayr Library, Paris Museum and township office. Pyper will contact the WRAR for their advice and direction. Members were reminded that NDHPS is considering a calendar sale and house tour for next year for 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation. It was suggested sponsors for the calendar pages would help fund the production of the calendar project. This should be ready for fall fundraising starting in 2016. Ayr News can provide printing and the summer student may be able to assist this project. The NDHPS approved spending $1000.00 to purchase three display cabinets, a five-drawer file cabinet, 10 certificate frames and 20 display plaques from the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. Adeney suggested that the NDHPS should approach the Township Council for consideration of space for a permanent archival display area attached to the township office. The members were supportive of this idea, but it would require a revision to the terms of reference for the NDHPS. Adeney will investigate dates to present the idea to the township council. She also pointed out that grants that the NDHPS can access might also support the needs of the Township and that this may be an incentive to move forward. Adeney suggested that Ken McLaughlin, author of the book Cambridge: Making of a City, would be a good speaker for a fall fundraiser. Ideas that were discussed included possible dates in September 11th or 17th, and that it could include a dinner, corn roast, bbq and lecture, possibly at the Dickie school site or the former Goldie House on Northumberland Street, with permission of the family. Members were asked to consider other ideas for a fall fundraising event for the next meeting. Adeney reported that Andrew Taylor’s book, Our Yesterdays and Todays, has been scanned and she will seek to get a digital copy of this for the NDHPS. This would be a good addition to our digital project. In addition, another group has requested a reprint of this book. There will be a community celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of North Dumfries at July 3rd concert of the AyrParis Band. The NDHPS agrees to participate. Members are asked to consider what can be done for that event. Ron Sage, Gord Taylor and Pyper will attend the grant program review of the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation to determine the procedures for spring applications. The Canadian Subsidy Directory website was flagged as a place to find alternative funding sources as well. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9 (a change from the regular Tuesday time slot), at the NDCC at 1:00 p.m.
Etonia ETONIA, February 29, 2016
Etonia United Church Pastor Lori Minler led the worship at Etonia last Sunday morning. Faithful Cliff Collard greeted at the door and pianist Connie Boone led the music for the day, After the announcements were read, in preparation for worship we sang ‘Come and Find the Quiet Centre’ and the Christ Candle was lighted by Colleen Pike and the Bible was opened by Lois Watters. ‘Come In, Come In and Sit Down’ came after the Call to Worship and was followed by the Opening Prayer. The Minute for Mission was a video from the United Church of Canada. The offering was presented for dedication by Arnold Mantel and Brian Ackland with grandson Kohan. We were treated to a beautiful rendition of ‘Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)’ sung by Penny Mason and Nancy Durham. Lori then read a lovely untitled poem which was written by Alicia Carpenter and in Sharing Time she continued with discussing 40 acts of generosity. We sang ‘A Touching Place’ and after scripture from Luke, chapter 7 read by Cathy Collard Lori delivered the sermon, ‘Loving Generously’ in which she hoped that there is room in our hearts for forgiveness. The Call to Prayer was followed by the Prayers of the People and the singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The worship closed with ‘Amazing Grace’, the Benediction and the Choral Amen. He was a respected doctor with the RCAF and also at McMaster University in Hamilton. Our prayers are with Don and Jean Eaton and also with Connie and Bill Boone. Last Wednesday evening the Princeton Book club met for the monthly get-together, and because of the freezing rain and rain the attendance was sparse. We are also starting a cookbook club, when each of us chooses a cookbook, reviews it and chooses a recipe to bring for a tasting at the meeting. We had some delicious samples for this first time. Everyone is welcome to come and join, they are a good group, the books chosen (by Librarian Betsy) are usually (!?) very interesting and the cookbooks also make good reading. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday evening of each month starting at 7:00, so come and join us. Upcoming birthdays, good wishes for a happy day and a happy year this week and next go to grand-daughter Ann Haw, to Jillian Cain, to Darlene Eaton

Drumbo DRUMBO, February 29, 2016
Drumbo Chatter Hello again! This week we head into March. When I think March, I think Spring!! Yeah!! Now that I have a smaller yard and we did most of the structure and planting last year, I just have to wait for the warm weather and put out my furniture and plant some annual flowers. It’s nice to keep it simple, that way I can enjoy what I have and I don’t have to spend hours maintaining it. I always look forward to putting up my Hummingbird feeders. I love to watch them when I am outside soaking up the warm weather. I would like to give thanks to our local Legions, who through their Youth and Education program, give young people an opportunity to speak in public. Two of my great-grandchildren won gold in their age groups and will move on to compete at the Woodstock Legion in March. Congratulations Braxton and Brody. Good luck in March. Have a good week and Happy Leap Year.

Life Lessons Couples without children always know how you should raise your kids. A mule dressed in a tuxedo, is still a mule. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn Patronize local merchants, even if it costs a bit more. Do not spread yourself too thin, learn to say no politely and quickly. Praise in public, Criticize in private. Don’t be afraid to say “I do not know or I am sorry.”

Ken Jackson welcomed everyone to the service and gave the morning announcements. Marcie Cunningham lit the Christ Candle, as well as all the advent candles. We sang “Let All Things Now Living”. Rev. Larry Balkwill, Pam Bader, Bethany Jackson and Jeanie Green sang “I Love You Lord More Than Thee” accompanied by Joan Shantz on the piano. Rev. Ken’s time for Young Worshippers was about how when our lives seem jumbled God offers us help to change and to do the things that He wants us to. Marcie Cunningham led in the Liturgy for Lent and extinguished the first, second and third candles. Rev. Ken led us in the Words of Assurance and the Doxology. Ann Hoard read the scripture reading of Isaiah 55:1-9 and then the gospel lesson of Luke 13:1-9. Rev. Ken’s inspirational sermon was entitled “More Manure”. Something to Think About I remember one word that was called to me quite often in school, ‘Quiet’. It was usually directed at me more than the other students. Don’t know why, maybe she noticed me more than the others who were not paying attention. But then again, maybe it was me. Maybe I should write a book on what I learned from my grade two, three, fourth grade teachers. Recently I was doing some visiting with some relatives and their place is out in the middle of nowhere. As we walked around the yard on that pre-spring, spring day, I noticed more than anything the quietness. So stark against what I was used to. It was so nice to have a quiet place to go to. But here, where they live, it was all a quiet place. Back in school we boys were sometimes a handful. Maybe that is why my marks reflected the noise of the classroom just as our towns and cities are too noisy with traffic and congestion. I must have got quieter as the years past because I started getting higher grades. Nice. I had learned something from all that yelling. Today I realize there is more to the scripture: “Be still and know that I am God”. It’s more than just being still. It’s putting out of our minds all the noise of life. Blocking off our life from the noise and congestion and just opening our ears to learn from the Master. And just like when we were kids, we will get to know Him by talking less and listening more. If we are to truly get to know God we have to do a lot more listening. It’s not about what we ask, or what we think we know but it’s about what we have heard Him say. Just like the line of that old hymn, ‘open my eyes that I may see. . . ‘ Something to think about. Rob
