Good evening everyone and welcome to Haywood Way for tonight’s league fixture against Leighton Town. Welcome to Paul, his staff and his players. At the weekend we earned a point against a much improved Arlesey team in difficult windy conditions, which was a good response to the disappointing midweek result at Baldock. It was the first time for a while that we had forced changes due to injury and unavailability. Leighton continue to be involved in the chase for promotion this season and I’ve challenged the players to make it as difficult as possible for those in the promotion race to pick up points when we play them. Congratulations to our U14 Squad who have reached the County Cup Final with a convincing 8-2 win against Didcot last weekend

Dynamos HISTORY Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football. Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. . After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone

Dynamos HISTORY Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last 'level five' team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming 'Double Winners' Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league. the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions, but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm , supported by Paul Bonham , Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 Scott Reynolds was appointed manager and when he resigned midway through the season it was left to Paul Bonham to take control but because of ground grading issues the Southern League made the decision to relegate the club and so after ten seasons in the Southern League. Phil Granville and Ben Gill were appointed midway through last season and will kick off the 2020/21 season again in the Spartan Premier Division. Steve Bateman was re appointed as manager in September 2021 Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12's Aylesbury & District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13's & 14's league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona's trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8's through to under 18's. At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14's, the Mayor's Cup at under 12's, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fairplay awards for their respective leagues. In the last 20 seasons across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football and play at the highest possible level.

Meet The MANAGEMENT Steve BATEMAN – Manager Bateman has enjoyed an illustrious non-league career, starting his playing days with Hemel Hempstead before joining Everton, where he went on to win the FA Youth Cup before later playing more than 300 games for both Chesham United and Slough Town. His managerial career started at Chesham but he also managed Berkhamsted Town, guiding them to a memorable FA Vase final at Villa Park, and local rivals Hemel Hempstead who he led to promotion to the Southern Premier League. Bateman was appointed Aylesbury boss in 2013, replacing Craig Faulconbridge, and spearhead a strong promotion push in 2014/15 finishing third to Royston and Kettering, Aylesbury's highest ever league position, before losing out in the play-offs to Bedworth. Bates then bought the biggest trophy back to Haywood Way when in 2016 Aylesbury defeated Chesham United 1-0 in the Berks and Bucks Cup Final at Windsor FC before departing the club at the end of that season. He then returned to Berkhamsted, this time gaining promotion from the Spartan South Midlands League in April 2018 before two succesful seasons in the the Southern League, helping them to a 6th place finish in his first season before ending season 19/20 in top place prior to the null and void decision due to Covid. Steve's then teamed up with Lee Bircham and Hemel Hempstead Town in the National League South before ending their tenure earlier this month.

Davis HAULE – Assistant Manager Davis is a Haywood Way legend and returns to Steve Bateman's management team as Assistant Manager. He will also be an important player in the middle of the park. Davis made nearly 200 appearances for Aylesbury between 2012 and 2019 and managed the side for a season and a half between 2016 and 2018. He brings with him an immense amount of knowledge of the non league game and will be an invaluable source of experience to the young players but also to the management team.

Last Time OUT Sat 5th February 2022 AVDFC 1 Arlesey town 1 Team: James Weatherill; Alex Mitchell, Will Mullarkey, Jack Hodgins, Terry Griffiths; Roy Brown, Matty Chew, Callum Shortt, Jake Baldwin; Chris Stapleton, Brian Haule Subs: Montel Brown, Ollie Lawford, Josh Edworthy, Luke Nugent, Dan McAteer The Dynamos have a run of five home games on the bounce with Arlesey Town first up. Steve Bateman was forced into 2 changes as captain, Dave Brown and midfielder, Alfi Touceda, were both out with injuries. Roy Byron and Matty Chew were both into the starting 11. It was a scrappy start to the match and Arlesey seemed to target Brian Haule in the first few minutes as he was down twice after tackles. After 6 minutes the first shot was from Arlesey who had a long range effort sail harmlessly wide of James Weatherill’s goal. A couple of minutes later and Arlesey again going close with a header over the bar from a free kick. Quarter of an hour gone and Dynamos were struggling to get going. Some great defending from Alex Mitchell saw Arlesey with a corner which was headed over the bar. Finally Dynamos got going after 19 minutes when Terry Griffiths headed on a Jake Baldwin corner and the fell kindly to Chris Stapleton, but his shot went wide of the mark. The majority of pressure came from Arlesey and some strong defending from Jack Hodgins was just enough to block a shot from the Arlesey No.10 who was causing some issues for Dynamos. 24 minutes and Arlesey were through on goal, James Weatherill came out and saved well with his legs and Will Mullarkey cleared the ball before Arlesey could react. Matty Chew was then in the thick of the action but tripped an Arlesey player up, resulting in the first booking of the match. On the half hour mark, Callum Shortt found some room and crossed for Brian Haule. He controlled well but fired his shot over the bar as Dynamos started to get some joy. 37 minutes and the best move of the match, former Dynamos player, Bruno Brito, split the defence with a great ball, finding their striker through on goal. He beat James Weatherill, but hit his shot the wrong side of the post…best chance so far. At the other end Callum Shortt again found space and knocked a ball through to Roy Byron who had ventured forward. He took a touch and rifled a shot which took a deflection and off for a corner. The corner was cleared well by Arlesey. 42 minutes and the breakthrough. A ball out from Will Mullarkey was headed down superbly by Chris Stapleton, into the feet of Brian Haule. He quickly moved the ball to Jake Baldwin who took a touch and hit a superb curling effort into the top left corner of the goal. Great strike. 1-0 Dynamos. 50 minutes on the clock and Arlesey, now with the wind, had a powerful shot saved by James Weatherill as he makes a double save after pushing away the first attempt. Roy Byron then tackled well and moved forward on the left wing to Will Mullarkey who was getting forward more. His cross found Jake Baldwin who found space for a shot which whistled wide of the far post. Good move and Roy Byron was having a great game in the middle breaking up play.

Last Time OUT 20 minutes remaining and Arlesey were pushing for an equaliser. Another decent mover from them beat the defensive line, rounded James Weatherill, but Terry Griffiths was on hand to make a vital block to keep Dynamos in front. Jake Baldwin then found some good pace beating a couple of players and whizzing over a cross straight to Brian Haule, he had space for a header but missed the target in what would prove very costly. Arlesey went straight down the other end and a shot deflected onto the arm of Jack Hodgins and the referee awarded a penalty. Slightly harsh maybe, but no complaints from Dynamos players. Arelsey scored the penalty. 1-1. 75 minutes and another glorious opportunity…Jake Baldwin again the creator as he ran riot down the left wing, this time hitting a low cross into the feet of Brian Haule, with just the keeper to beat, his shot went agonisingly wide of the goal. Less than 10 minutes remaining and Jake Baldwin again had some joy on the left as he cut inside and had a shot/cross which almost sneaked in as it flew past the defence and keeper. Ollie Lawford was introduced and Brian Haule came off. Jake Baldwin looked the most likely to cause issues for Arlesey and another decent cross field ball found Callum Shortt on the right wing, he skipped past a challenge but was then taken down. The free kick was clipped into the back post by Callum Shortt and Jack Hodgins was there to head towards goal but the keeper saved easily. With a minute left of the 90, Josh Edworthy came on for his first team debut, replacing the impressive Roy Byron. With 8 minutes injury time due to an injury to the linesman, there was still time for some action. However, the only 2 chance to note were both from Arlesey as first Alex Mitchell made a great challenge and then in the dying seconds, James Weatherill made a routine save to keep the score level. • •

Leighton Town HISTORY Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions. Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton Town Boardroom. The club then rejoined the Spartan League in 1967/68. Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved on to other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined. A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and after just two seasons, the club rejoined the South Midlands League. During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s. In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history. The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won, and with it a place in the Isthmian League. 1992/3 saw the Club’s success continue when they won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1970. The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point but the Youth Team retained the County Cup. 1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup. In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time. 1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy and the Buckingham Charity Cup. Season 2003/04 Leighton won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. They were also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey Town respectively. The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield. The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League Western Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them. After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semi-finalists, Borehamwood. The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they again finished as Runners Up.

Leighton Town HISTORY The Club were relocated to the Southern League Midland Division for 06-07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup. The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until mid-October. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in it’s history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Keith Scott then left in December to join Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more. The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level. The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties. Season 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League. The 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years. 2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place. 2015/2016 After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season. 2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and we eventually finished in 16th place. 2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA VASE. Gates improved and it was our best season for about 8 years, 2018/2019 Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned in the close season and Danny Nicholls was appointed as Manager but left in October due to work commitments. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson, who had previously won the Premier division title with London Colney as their new Management Team. They steadied the ship and we finished in mid table. 2019/2020 Was a good season for the Club as we again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form as we slowly climbed up the table. The team were also awarded the Team of the Month twice. 2020/2021 Town for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant we could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season. 2021/2022 Leighton are hoping to be challenging at the top end of the table but we are well aware that this is a difficult Division and several other strong teams will be competing to finish in the top 2 places. .
