Perfect for preparing and dimensioning small components. This excellent small block plane is perfect for small plane work like musical instrument making, preparing Kumiko for Shoji screens, or anywhere you need an accurately dimensioned small component. It has an adjustable mouth and adjustable depth skids. The skids turn this small block plane into a high precision thickness plane. It is capable of thicknessing small pieces of wood to within 0.025mm. The design allows you to make workpieces of a size that are virtually impossible to produce easily by any other method. HP-12 Dual Angle Smoothing Plane
Easily adjustable, and practically universal.
Bridge City tool making at its very best. This may be the only bench plane needed in the workshop. It comes with two blades, each with two edges; effectively the HP-12 is four planes in one. One blade has 30° and 35° bevels whilst the other has a 40° bevel at one end and a toothed edge at the other. Used bevel-up and bedded at 12° it can be a low-angle plane for end grain, a standard smoothing plane, a high angle plane for difficult grain, or a scrub plane for fast flattening. When located in the plane, the edge of the blade that is not in use, sits in a protective aluminium channel. The blades are 5.7mm thick and 50.8mm wide, hardened to 60-62 HRC from A2 tool steel, and lapped to a mirror finish, no flattening required. The HP-12 includes a pair of depth skids. Fitted on either side of the body they turn the HP-12 into a highly precise thicknesser. The depth skids allow accurate dimensioning of stock to within a tolerance of 0.05mm. This is two tools in one, both a standard and a low angle block plane. The blade sits bevel-up with a bed angle of 12°. The blade is 4.76mm thick with two edges, one at each end. A 47° bevel for general work and a 42° bevel for taking a fine shaving off end grain. The sharp edge of the blade, not in use sits in an aluminium channel for protection. Gone is the traditional steel bar across the body to help clamp the blade. In its place, a quick action blade clamp, with a 4-linkage mechanism that snaps into place. The 304 stainless-steel rear tote fits palms perfectly, making it a most comfortable plane to use. Adding to its functionality is the inclusion of the depth skids, turning it into a 50.8mm wide thicknesser. When using the HG-4 it is virtually impossible not to achieve a square, even edge at an exact bevel angle. Added to that, is the ability to put a micro bevel on the edge, to within a degree or less. It can accommodate blades up to 70mm wide, and will even take blades that taper in length. A sliding T-Square incorporated into the design makes the correct setting foolproof. Simply turning the rear micro-adjustment knob changes the bevel angle, each full turn equates to one-degree. The included Set-Up Gauge comes marked with 20°, 25°, 30°, and 35° angles, for fast and repeatable initial setting.
