THE SOCIAL 54 N. Orange Ave. 407.246.1419 Wed, June 26, 8pm, $10 Brutal is one way of putting it.The only way, really, considering the thermometer-cracking highs that faced Generationals during the monthlong sessions for their second album, Actor- Caster. “DC is very unforgiving in the summer. It just radiates heat,” explains singer/multi- instrumentalist Ted Joyner.“So even though it was sunny outside, we sat in the basement most of the time.” That explains the melancholic/morose bent of the band’s lyrics this time around, like how Grant Widmer-also a singer/multi-instrumentalistrefuses to pick up the phone in “Goose & Gander” or the way Joyner’s lovelorn melodies linger well after the last dust-clearing note of “Dirty Mister Dirty.” It’s as if they’re chasing every smile with a sneer, and at least one of them’s brandishing a knife behind his back.

ROADTRIP

Talking the left coast with local legend Kelly Slater With a rich history dating back to 1959, the U.S. Open of Surfing boasts one of a few of North America’s six-star World Qualifying Series (WQS)-rated men’s and women’s events. Offering the highest-possible allotment of qualifying points and overall cash prizes totaling $200,000, the prestigious competition is critical to American surfers aspiring to reach the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) elite World Tours. This month, aXis Magazine and Pacifico Beer are giving away two pairs of all expense paid tix to the US Open in Huntington Beach for the opening weekend of July 20th, with flights, hotels and Open tix covered... and Pacifico VIP treatment! So we took this chance to catch up with Cocoa Beach’s living legend of the aqua kind, Kelly Slater, to talk about the US Open’s past, present and future, and his own personal experiences at Huntington Beach.

aXis: The US Open has seen significant growth over the past half decade, what would you attribute this to? SLATER: For a lot of years, since the ‘80s, they had smaller crowds for whatever reason. And with the webcasts, surfers can just watch online. But there were a lot of people there and I’m not sure what you attribute that to. Maybe it’s surfing’s growth, maybe it’s just good marketing and publicity and where it’s held. You’d have to ask everyone what they’re doing there. There were probably a lot of guys there just looking for girls. aXis: Seems like an insane crowd, with some great bands on the mainstage and a constant party. Yet you brave the crowd and wander straight through unnoticed? SLATER: I get by with my hooded sweatshirt up. I actually didn’t have one walk where I didn’t get detected, but I just kept walking. It was actually sort of fun to see if I could make it all the way [to the competitors area].

aXis: Everyone thinks being a pro surfer is just a permanent vacation. But a tourney is actually quite grueling? SLATER: It’s pretty full on. I get really overwhelmed after I surf. You know, you surf, you do the interviews, and then you do an hour of signing [autographs].You just want a massage after that. It’s a lot of stimulation. That’s the biggest thing. From all the people to all the music to watching the contest, there are just so many things going on.

SOUNDCHECK

Say Anything has been making odd,

unclassifiable indie rock music since they were 14 or 15 years old, playing strangely literate and loud rock, characterized by what one might imagine if Larry David fronted a Fugazi cover band with the members of Queen. Not that that’s a stretch or anything. Having been birthed from the indie/punk boom of the early twentyfirst century, Say Anything rose to prominence with their (oddly) popular record …Is a Real Boy and somehow broke the “pretty boy punk” mold by establishing a career that thrived somewhere between music your pretentious college student of an older brother would like and the loud crap that your little brother uses to annoy him with. Say Anything followed that record up with the equally eclectic and lengthy, In Defense of the Genre and their exceedingly bratty (hopefully in a good way) self-titled LP. Say Anything saw a top 20 Billboard debut last year with their fourth studio album, Anarchy, My Dear on the indie Equal Vision Records. Now that you are caught up on their history, let’s talk about the present. Lead singer Max Bemis has had a busy year. Producing a graphic novel, his wife’s album and his first child, it’s no long a punk rock life for the active enrepreneur. Check out their stop at the House of Blues this month on their All My Friends Are Enemies: Rarities Tour.

SAYING ANYTHING FOR THE FIRST TIME So how rare are these rarities that you performing this time around? Max: This release is over ten years in the making and something I’ve been dying to share with kids. We have incredible fans who have taken the time to dig for these tracks in the past so I see this as my way of rewarding them for being so awesome and hardcore. What was your motivation to publish ‘Polarity’ graphic novel/comic ? Max: I am a die-hard, obsessive comic fan and have been since I was like really young. When I was growing up I read a lot of, like, more mature-oriented comics that a kid probably shouldn’t read but it resulted in me being pretty obsessed with the medium. And now in my house I have a library for graphic novels and it’s probably my greatest passion outside of music. I’d even say it equals my passion for music. So, being a writer and one who creates, you can’t help but have it occur to you,“oh, maybe I can write a comic.” How would you compare the process of writing music with a graphic novel? Max: It is similar is certain respects, in like getting into a mental zone of creativity. I have a very manic personality as most people know, and I just kind of bust into it, like I’ll just go in and write it from beginning to end like I do when I’m working on a song. But it’s a little different because when you’re recording or writing a song or if you’re performing music, you kind of have to be in it 100% at all times.Whereas, you get on stage and there’s no like “ahh I need five minutes” to go, like, take a pee or whatever, have a coffee. And when you’re recording, you’re also pretty locked into being there and tracking. But in this case, I felt able to; you know, get up and walk around or have a movie on in the background when it was raining and I was kinda writing next to my wife. It’s a little more mellow. But I’m still obsessed and involved during the process of writing and I’m just like adore writing comics. Back to the music... how do you approach the road and the fans now compared to when you started more than a decade ago? Max: This sounds corny – but really, for anything who’ a supporter of the band and you respect…I love to communicate with fans on Twitter, so feel free to follow me. I have a great time interacting and talking to people. It really keeps me going – whenever the people who support the band communicate their support is like the best feeling in the world and I still…I just think we’re so blessed to have the fans and supporters and even the people who just like our first record like… I love that.

STILL BELIEVES IN MAGIC..

On Thursday, June 27, University of Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel will almost definitely be the first man picked overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. Obviously, nothing in life is certain except for death, taxes and Kate Upton being in love with me, as the Cleveland Cavaliers could cite Noel’s injured knee and decide to skip out on his incredible potential for a (possibly) safer pick like Otto Porter or a more immediate impact big man like Alex Len. But if the Cavs indeed choose to do that, get ready for Oden-overDurant 2.0. The Orlando Magic should have been in that No. 1 pick hot seat, what with the worst record in the NBA and all, but the NBA is stupid and doesn’t automatically reward terrible teams because of factors like “tanking” and “fairness” and “parity”. Instead, our city’s franchise has the No. 2 pick, which means that GM Rob Hennigan will either have his choice of every player in the draft not named Noel, or he can trade down and try to acquire additional first round picks so he can grab Michigan PG Trey Burke and other young talent to fill holes. But since Hennigan has refused my requests to be best friends and allow me access to his diabolical basketball genius mind, I can’t predict what he is going to. What I can do is lay out what I would do if I were the GM of the Magic, like I should have been once Otis Smith was finally, rightfully fired. If I were in charge of making the No. 2 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft for the Magic, I’d probably want to trade down with a team like the Phoenix Suns at No. 5 to get Burke and take on the No. 30 pick, too. Or maybe I’d call the Minnesota Timberwolves to get their Nos. 9 and 26 to take Michael Carter-Williams. Perhaps I’d even call the Portland Trail Blazers to get the No. 10 pick and Will Barton for the No. 2 and Arron Afflalo or Glen Davis’s contract and then select Carter-Williams to be Jameer Nelson’s successor at the point. There are a lot of options the Magic can explor with the No. 2 pick that they might not have been able to do so with the first pick. But since I’m not an “expert” and I sometimes “have no fucking clue” what I’m talking about, let’s forget about trades and just assume that the Magic are going to take the guy who best suits their needs and the franchise’s personality going forward. If the Cavs take Noel first in this draft, I’d like the Magic to take Kansas SG Ben McLemore. And he agreed with me when we got the chance to speak recently. aXis: For the sake of this interview, we’re going to pretend that I’m the GM of the Orlando Magic, and you have to convince me that you’re the man that I should take with the No. 2 pick. So what qualities set you apart from the rest of the guys in this draft? Why are you Orlando’s guy? Ben McLemore: The Orlando Magic are oviously a young team with a coaching staff that’s devoted to teaching the young guys about winning, and I think that with my upside and my ability to shoot the ball and switch up defenders, I can fit perfectly with what the Magic are trying to do. aXis: What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says Orlando? BM: (laughs) Disney World. aXis: Have you ever been to Disney World? If not, would you be willing to postpone your first trip until the Magic win an NBA title? BM: I’ve never been, so I’d like to go when I get to Orlando if the Magic draft me. aXis: You probably should go right away, because history suggests that you may never go to Disney World if you agreed. Obviously, Florida offers people a lot more than most other states, and Orlando is basically right in the center of it all, so you’d have music, culture, beaches and nightlife all readily available. How much of an influence is a city’s culture in making you feel comfortable, whether Orlando, Cleveland, Charlotte, New Orleans, etc.? BM: I don’t think I’ll have a problem fitting in wherever I go, because I’m good with people and I feel like can I always be personal and fit in with any city.

aXis: Since we book the Florida Music Festival, what artist would you want to book for next year if you end up in a Magic uni? BM: If I had the chance to go to a concert or something like that, it’d be big, like Lil Wayne or someone like that. aXis: How much NBA do you watch during a season? Are you the kind of guy who just watches one team or do you watch as much of the action as possible? BM: I try to watch as much action as I can. I like to watch how the different teams play together on the court, how they play defense and how they just play as a team. I try to watch the players from each division and how they create for themselves and their footwork and try to use that and learn from that to put into my game and make myself better. aXis: Once you’re drafted and playing in the NBA – in Orlando or some other, loser town – are you worried at all about the groupie culture? Orlando does have a lot of very, very good-looking women. BM: (laughs) I think I’ll be able to handle that. I’ve matured a lot. aXis: As you played in college and your future as an eventual lottery pick became clearer, were there any teams that you watched and thought, “That’s a team that I can make an immediate impact for”? BM: Not really. I’m just glad that I have the chance to be in this situation. To be considered one of the top lottery picks, that’s a blessing. And to be able to play in the NBA is something that I’ve just always dreamed of.

2013 NBA DRAFT OFFICIAL ENDORSEMENT aXis: Are you for or against the NBA’s rule that requires players to spend a year in college before they can be eligible for the draft? Is that something that helped you or would you have wanted to go pro right out of high school? BM: I think it definitely helped me a lot. The things like going to school and getting any academics in are definitely going to help you in the long run. At this point, I’m still thinking about going back and taking some sort of summer classes and eventually getting my degree. aXis: If Andrew Wiggins would have made his decision and committed to Kansas before you declared for the draft, would that have made any difference in your choice? BM: I don’t think it would have made any difference. I already had my mind set and made up. I have to do what’s best for me and make the right decision for me. He obviously made a great choice by picking Kansas with the perfect coach in Bill Self and he’ll be great for the Jayhawks, but I needed to take my decision about my next step and playing in the NBA. aXis: How familiar are you with the new culture that the Magic has adopted in the wake of Dwight Howard’s mishandling of his departure and trade demands? Would you feel comfortable joining a team that is dominated by young talent, as opposed to one with more veteran leadership? BM: I definitely would. I can give a lot, especially to a young team like the Magic. I got to play with four guys this past year and it taught me a lot about playing with veterans and experienced guys, so I was able to learn a lot more that I could take with me to the next level. aXis: Analysts and critics compare your style and ability to Ray Allen. Is that a valid comparison or is there someone else you think is more fitting? BM: I think that’s a pretty valid comparison. He’s one of the best shooters in NBA history, so I’ve tried to watch how he does the little things and also how he shoots the ball so I can learn more. Like I said, I think it’s a great comparison. aXis: Us Orlando fans, we’re a pretty tortured bunch. We’ve come close two times, missed and then lost our superstars to Los Angeles. But most of all, we just like having guys that are active in the community. Do you feel that you’re a face of the franchise type that can lead a young team on and off the court? BM: Oh definitely. That’s one of the things that I want to do in helping a team win and leading a team to a championship is also helping the community. Wherever I go, I want to give back and I also want to give back to my own community. I’m very fortunate to be where I am and have this opportunity, so I want to not only give back but also just socialize with my new community. aXis: Finally, and this is probably the most important question I will ask in regard to giving you my endorsement for the No. 2 pick by the Magic. You’re a St. Louis Cardinals fan. I’m a St. Louis Cardinals fan. If the Magic pick you, are we watching the World Series together in October? BM: I think the Cardinals have a lot of talented guys and they can definitely win the World Series this year, so I’d definitely be watching them if they did. aXis: Fine, I’ll watch it by myself. (Accompany Ashley Burns with a stool at Cleo’s Lounge for the World Series by following @MayorBurnsy)

AND YOUR 2nd PICK IN THE NBA DRAFT IS.. Ben Mclemore! aXis thoughts #9: “It’s so hot out there... It’s so hot that I saw two trees fighting over a dog..”
