DELUNA FEST

WHO: Pearl Jam / Foo Fighters / Zac Brown WHAT: Beach front Festival WHERE: Pensacola Beach WHEN: Sept 21–23rd

In 1559... After surviving a treacherous journey across ferocious seas, Spanish conquistador Don Tristan De Luna made landfall on what we know as Pensacola Beach, FL. Upon landing, De Luna and his crew threw a party. It was (literally) the beach party to end all beach parties since the settlement was blown away by a hurricane a few months later. In 2010... America’s original beach party was officially revived with the launch of DeLuna Fest. For three-days, music fans can dance on the sugar white sands of Pensacola Beach, revel in a diverse mix of live beach-friendly bands and musicians, and admire Florida’s breathtaking sunsets. DeLuna Fest celebrates Pensacola’s rich heritage and raises a toast to America’s original settlement. DeLuna Fest returns September 21 - 23, 2012 with four stages (two directly on the Pensacola Beach sand) and a top-notch display of live music featuring a diverse blend of genres. Bands include Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Florence and the Machine, Zac Brown Band, Band of Horses, Ben Folds Five, Fitz and the Tantrums, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Wallflowers, City and Colour, Band of Skulls, and many more. Built on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, DeLuna Fest is the ultimate end of summer beach music festival!

BREWSCHOOL...

KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops

Brewgating pre and post Game with Erika of

World of Beer UCF

It’s tailgate season, that means lots of burgers, brauts and brews... so in order to leave some room for the grilled carcass, what style beer would you suggest? A style of beer that won’t fill you up is a ‘session’ beer. A ‘session’ beer is a beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV and features a balance between malt and hop characters and, usually, a clean finish. The purpose of a session beer is to allow you to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or ‘session’, without overwhelming your senses or getting too intoxicated. (Who knew you could enjoy beer and not get tanked?!) Historically, during WWI, workers were allowed up to 2 drinking “sessions” that lasted up to 4 hours. They preferred lighter beers that they could consume a good amount of during the short time period. Hmmm, booze and guns; My kind of party! Top three session beers:

• Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss.

A Hefeweizen from California. Its ABV is 4.8%. It is An American Hefeweizen; the hazygolden Hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day tailgate.

• Full Sail Session Lager:

A pale lager from Oregon. Its ABV is 5.1%, not sweet and not bitter. Just good. Light bodied and crisp. • Terrapin Easy Rider: A sessionable IPA from Georgia. This 4.3% ABV IPA is one smooth character of a beer. It’s brewed with an abundance of Maris Otter malt and five different hops including Galaxy hops from Australia! This golden hued honey is laid back and free wheelin’. Any suggestions for the local Floridian football fan? One beer that I’d recommend from these parts would be Cocoa Beach’s Pale Ale… It’s a Pale Ale from Cocoa Beach resting at 5.2%. Not too high of an alcohol content so you can sip and have more than one. It is a very traditional Pale Ale with a light mouthfeel, a deep golden color, and a slightly citrus hop aroma. Perfect for those hot afternoon Florida football games. Another beer from this area is Native Lager from Fort Lauderdale. It is a smooth tasting golden lager with absolutely NO aftertaste. They use the finest German Hops, Malts and Yeast to produce this easy drinking light tasting beer.

For the Knights coolers at the Ohio State tailgate? If we were at the Ohio State tailgate and wanted to welcome our visitors, I’d suggest anything from Angry Orchard, they make some delicious ciders. Great for the girls that don’t like the taste of beer, ciders are made from fruits. Another way to make Ohio’ners (sp?) feel welcome would to have anything from Hoppin Frog Brewery. They are known for making very flavorful beers in the most flavorful beer styles. They also use a special bottling machine that keeps the beer fresher! Now, if we didn’t want to be so friendly to the out-of-towners, I’d suggest anything from Bell’s Brewery, which is located in Michigan. Shove a Michigan beer in any Ohio fan’s face and get prepared for some $#%@ talking. What brew is best for beer pong at the tailgate? The best beer for a beer bong would have to be Shipyard Light. It is a Light Lager from Maine with an ABV of 3.2%. It is a crisp, dry, light Ameirican style golden ale with only 97 calories! This would be most like a Miller Light, you get the point.

The 2012 Casual And/Or Lazy Sports Fan’s Guide to

s ’ a d i r o l F And NCAA

courtesy of Ashley Burns

NFL ll Teams Footba

FAU – Retired Owls coach Howard Schnellenberger said that he believes that FAU is very close to being invited to join the Big East. This is important because it reminds us that 13% of Americans over the age of 65 are suffering from dementia. I’m just going to start this instant Pulitzer contender column off with a controversial statement – Florida is full of terrible sports fans. That’s not to say they’re all arrogant or mean or flat-chested, but a lot of them don’t know their B-holes from their elbows when it comes to the basics of the professional and collegiate sports teams in this state. And that sucks, because most of our football teams suck, and everyone needs to be aware of why they suck. That said, I’m going to use this month’s most read copy space to educate all of you, because I know how much you depend on me for, well, everything. Look, I’m not being cocky, but Stephen Hawking once called me a genius. And only a week ago, Burt Reynolds told me he thought I was hilarious. One of those claims is actually true. Find me at Finnhenry’s and buy me a beer and I’ll tell you which one. As for your football scoops, let’s start with the state’s NFL teams, led by my beloved Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins – You wanna know how bad the Dolphins are going to be this season? Go to Home Depot and buy yourself a sledge hammer and two large chunks of granite. Place your testicles in between the pieces of granite and then have a juiced up bouncer pound the top piece of granite with the sledge hammer. Then, once you wake up from the incredible pain that will undoubtedly have you fainting in a bloody mess, open your car door and slam your balls in it 5 times. All that pain, all that agony… won’t even be half as bad as being a Dolphins fan this season. Jacksonville Jaguars – I don’t think Jaguars fans – all 4 of them – have as much to be depressed about as Dolphins fans, but it should be close. The Jags are one missed block away from the Chad Henne experience, which could also come if Blaine Gabbert keeps sucking. Also, I have heard that England sent Cher Lloyd to America as revenge for the NFL sending the Jaguars to London. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Of all Florida teams, Bucs fans have the most hope. I’m not saying they should all get out the gear they bought when the team won the Super Bowl in 2002 and pretend like they’re loyal again, but it looks like Greg Schiano may have this team in good shape soon.

And now for a quick rundown of the state’s BCS football teams, starting with the school that I love so much, despite shunning me for so many years, UCF and the (Golden) Knights. UCF – On one hand, I like this year’s squad, and I’m excited about Storm Johnson’s debut. On the other hand, we still have an offensive gameplan that consists of Tecmo Bowl options like “Run Straight”, “Run Left” and “Run Right”. Just once I’d like George O’Leary to summon his dark spirits in hiring an energetic offensive coordinator.

Miami – So help me Moses in a kayak with Cthulhu, if Miami doesn’t get slammed by the NCAA worse than UCF did, I will fill so many pee balloons and hit the road to Indianapolis to pay a visit to the NCAA. But even if Miami gets off with a slap, this team is a punishment in itself. Hey, remember when the Hurricanes were going to dominate the ACC? Fun. FIU – Mario Cristobal cannot wait for a real football team to call him. Looking at you, Hurricanes. USF – I think that BJ Daniels is incredibly talented and could do very special things for the Bulls’ offense this season. That said, please God, don’t let them win the Big East. FSU – Ranked No. 7 in both preseason polls, the Seminoles are the favorite team in the Sunshine State. Unfortunately, they’ll eventually be No. 24 in the We All Know How This Turns Out Poll. UF – Will Muschamp needs to change his name to Will MusSEC6thseed.

aXisFIT BADASS of the MONTH

EAT BUFFALO WILD WINGS (the Salads)

While the vegetables in a salad provide fiber, vitamin A and potassium, it is important to pay close attention to the toppers and dressings. They can add an unhealthy amount of fat, salt and calories. Pass on salads that include fried meats, Opt for the Grilled Blackened Chicken Salad, which is served on a bed of fresh greens and has only 320 calories and 8 g of fat. Order your salad with dressing on the side. Buffalo Wild Wings offers fat-free ranch, light French, light balsamic and light Asian sesame dressings.

aXis: What do you do to stay fit? Hope: Diet, Diet, DIET! I truly do believe the saying “ You can’t out train a bad diet”. Eating a clean, healthy, balanced diet, doesn’t just effect the way I look. It also has a positive effect on how I feel. Training is the easy and fun part of being fit. But, diet is where you will feel and see the results. So I focus a lot of my lifestyle on a balanced, clean diet.

aXis: Where do you train? Hope: I actually train at both a Golds Gym and LA Fitness. I like the change of sense sometimes. I also train at the local high school track on the weekends where I do HIIT/Plyos, for my cardio and overall conditioning.

like a cave man!

aXis: What is your diet philosophy? Hope: I believe everyone’s body is different and it takes time to find out what works best for you, your body and your personal goals. For me, eating every 3 hours and cycling my carbs during the week seems to work best. This helps me maintain a lean figure while still keeping my energy up to be able to maximize my results in the gym.

DRINK

aXis: Favorite healthy meal? Hope: I can easily eat grilled chicken, broccoli and sweet potato at every meal! So simple, but yet so filling. I have no problem eating the same meals day in and day out.

1. Alternate alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks to save calories. Beer, Water, Beer, Water!!

2. Choose wine, light beer, or simple cocktails made with low-calorie mixers. Some mixers that won’t pack on the pounds include: Diet soda or diet tonic: 0 calories Orange juice (6 oz): 84 calories Cranberry juice cocktail (8 oz): 136 calories Light orange juice (8 oz): 50 calories Light cranberry juice (8 oz): 40 calories Light lemonade (8 oz): 5 calories

stay hydrated!

3. Skip the mixer altogether. Try ordering your favorite spirit or one of the new flavored liquors on the rocks. Infused vodkas like Pinnacle are very popular because they are not sweetened but infused with flavors, from jalapeno to peach, without adding any extra calories, 4. Dilute your drink. Another option is diluting your drink with club soda or sparkling water. Wine spritzers are a low-calorie standby. And if you usually drink vodka and cranberry, for example, try it with club soda, just a splash of cranberry juice, and a squeeze of lime. Garnish with a wedge of citrus or pineapple to add flavor and few calories. 5. Have a game plan. Before heading out to the cocktail party or happy hour, make sure you have a game plan. Decide in advance the number of cocktails you are going to drink and cut back on calories during the day in anticipation.

HOPE TRASK

When: October 6th Where: Crossfit Lake Mary Link: BeastModeBattle.com/Orlando

Beast Mode Battle is proud to announce that preparation for the second competition of 2012 is underway. We are extremely pleased to present CrossFit Lake Mary as the headline sponsor and host this year. The year’s first event was a huge success and October’s competition promises to be even better.

aXis: Favorite cheat meal? Hope: Favorite cheat meal.... do I have to pick just one?! This is hard one, but I think I would have to say anything “breakfast” related. Pancakes, toast, waffles, crepes, bacon, hash browns.... anything you can have for breakfast, I love! Obviously from my selection mentioned, I like carbs for breakfast!! When I get cheat meals, you can usually find me at the local IHOP with a stack of pancakes and a sugar filled flavored hot chocolate.

Beast Mode Battle’s claim to fame is its unique format. Athletes compete in a series of events that are set up in a circuit format. The athletes begin their heat and do not stop moving until they have completed all stations of the competition. There is no down time in between events. The athlete must dig deep and get into “Beast Mode” for the duration of their flight.
