What the hell is FMF?

Welcome to the FMF experience... one of the biggest independent music events in the country, right here in your own backyard. It’s also one of the biggest parties in Orlando. Celebrating it’s 11th year, the Florida Music Festival is a 3 day (predominantly) unsigned artist showcase, in which more than 175 artists from around the country come to Orlando to play a 30 minute power packed showcase for the attending music industry and more importantly, the fans on 10 stages all within walking distance downtown. Some bands hope to sign with a major, others will go indie and still others are doing it themselves and just want your support. Some bands will rock you hard, others will throw down some hip-hop. But whether it’s punk, indie, metal, pop or whatever the heck you call half of the bands, it’s a blast. Each night there will also be headliners at all the major venues, with THE DIRTY HEADS, FILTER, CANDLEBOX, TYRONE WELLS, THE CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY, 7 NATIONS and more performing on their respective nights.

Rule 4 VARIETY AND VOLUME ARE THE KEY! So many bands, so many venues, how do I get a ticket or pass? (One wristband gets you into all 10 clubs for one night... the biggest rock and roll club crawl)! just ruin the album. So we all just made a conscious decision to just go in and have fun and write music like we would if nobody ever knew about us. That’s definitely the mentality. I’ve watched tons of interviews and if you’re not hungry and not scared that this could all be taken away from you at any minute that’s when you are going to lose your magic or lose who you are as an artist or a musician. So we try not to think about this stuff, we try to just go in and think that every album is our first album and nobody has ever heard of us so we’ve got to put out the best stuff we can. But at the same time having fun with it and being who you are.

14

Q

So you guys got your name when stealing a 12 pack at a store, ‘come here you little dirty heads’! What kind of beer was it!?

FMF GETS DIRTY THURSDAY DIRTY

J

SO WE MET UP WITH “DIRTY J” FROM FMF2012 OPENING NIGHT HEADLINER, THE DIRTY HEADS TO FIND OUT HOW DIRTY THIS SO CAL GROUP CAN GET.

Q

Welcome to the 11th Annual Florida Music Festival, we’re really excited to have you guys kick off opening night. So outside of SoCal, how does Central Florida rank?

A

At the beginning of our career it was kind of just the coasts. But now that we’ve grown and got more fans, I mean it’s hard to choose from East Coast to West Coast. But Florida has always been a second home for us. We’ve had some of the top ticket sales there. I mean we don’t care about ticket sales, I don’t care if there are 500 people or 2000 people, it just depends on the people that are at the show. But we’ve had some of the biggest shows in Florida for us to date and they’ve always been amazing shows. So it’s really awesome and we’re always really stoked to get down there and the weather is pretty similar to home so it’s always nice to get away from the shitty ass cold.

Q

[ [ “we can just do 4/20 week.”

We’ve had a lot of great ska/punk/ reggae artists over the years and our Keynote Speaker this year is Kevin Lyman. How do you think The Warped Tour changed the ska/ punk/reggae genre throughout the years?

A

Doubt, and going to festivals like the Warped Tour. I think it had a lot to do with it; it had a lot to do with spreading the whole Southern California vibe with those bands. Just the Warped Tour in general as a festival, it’s really the only touring festival left and as a band it really makes you change your whole mentality when it comes to live shows and how you deal with live shows and how you deal with people and festivals. It really steps up your chops, everyday you are playing while 50 other bands are playing and people are walking by going to other stages... how are you going to get those people to stay and watch you. You have to think about that, and have the mentality that we are going to put on the best show that we can every day and you also don’t know what time you are going to play. If you’ve done the Warped Tour in a van, you’ve definitely got chops. And I will definitely respect you no matter what kind of music you play.

It’s the combination between Warped Tour and Sublime and No Doubt, because both of those bands were very influential. If you talk to people who never heard of reggae or ska, but became fans of it, it’s probably got a lot to do with Sublime and No

Q

How has your relationship with Rome, Bud and Eric of Sublime affected your music in the studio and on the stage?

A

Well I think Sublime was really the first band that opened our eyes to a style of music where you could join styles of music. Where you could take a hip hop song and add reggae to it. You could take a reggae song and add a little bit of punk to it or rock or whatever. We don’t have a lot of punk influences but it was just kind of the first time we heard a band

that mashed up. They would mash up so many styles of music that made us realize we could do three of four styles of music in this one album, which was really cool. It was really great as an artist to be able to do that and not to just be stuck making 12 songs that sound exactly the same. With Rome, I mean that was just one of the coolest things that could have happened. He came into the studio, didn’t have an album, didn’t have anything, this nice little dude that would come in. He was super talented and we knew it when we became friends, and then we wrote that song and somehow it just blew up and became this smash hit. For everything that happened with Sublime with Rome and “Lay Me Down,” it was perfect because we got to go on tour with one of our best friends. We don’t really care how or who says or what, it was rad to have one of our buddies be on such a huge song for us, so it could elevate both of us into a different stage in our careers.

Q

So rumor has it the new album is due this summer, now that you guys have had success on the road and with Any Port in the Storm, how does the success affect the recording process, and the overall creativity aspect?

A

I think it actually adds pressure. We had such a big song; I think that if we let that get to us, I think it would

A

I don’t know where that story came from. I don’t know if it was from a store, but it was probably something really gross like Natty Ice, but I don’t really remember because we probably did it a couple times. But that’s not really how we got our name. I think we got our name more so because we used to tag along with our older brothers and there was a group of us and it was more so snaking beers off of those guys. And just being at their parties and stuff like that and we were always surfing and skating while they were trying to buy beers and then they kind of gave us the name and we kind of adopted it. When we wrote our first song that was in there and then that became our name.

Q

So as you know, we just missed getting you guys for 4/20, but we’re happy to be doing the 19th together, any tricks or treats we should expect for the national holiday?

A

Yeah, but we’re going to be there at like midnight and that’s kind of 4/20ish. And it’s like when Christmas comes around or my birthday comes around, I just do birthday week. So we can just do 4/20 week. We’ve got an awesome strand of weed, that’s probably what I’ll be smoking. But no, we’re just going to go play some shows and have fun.

Q A

Any additional supplies added to the band rider for that weekend?

Yeah, we have those face mask bongs but we’ve changed them into underwear bongs. So it’s like you put your legs through the things so it’s like you’re wearing a face mask on your whole junk and it just gets you really fucked up. I can’t believe you’ve never heard of that before, it’s because I just made it up.

FMF ARTIST: FILTER

FRIDAY APRIL20TH • WALL ST PLAZA •$10

ARTISTHT SPOTLIG

Over the last two decades Filter’s founder and lead man Richard Patrick has seen his share of highs and lows. Eclecticism has been a hallmark of Patrick’s career in Filter, and it’s administered with crushing efficiency on every studio production, and even moreso on stage. Original fans weaned on the industrial outbursts and corrosive beats of 1995’s Short Bus and 1999’s Title of Record know Patrick’s unmistakable scream, but also his unflinching honesty dominating the band’s smash “Take A Picture.” Filter makes their second FMF appearance this month, returning to the Wall St Plaza stage that they blew up back at FMF2009. We caught up with the voice of Filter to talk past, present and the future of rock.

WELCOME BACK TO the florida Music festival. it’s great to have you back. does orlando have any special signifigance in your career, since the house of blues show back in 2002 which made you decide to enter rehab and quit substances? RP: It was probably the worst show of my career and since then we have played Orlando and it’s been a shining return. I’ve been super healthy and my music came over the way I intended it to be. Orlando is one of the watermarks in my lifestyle change.

the fans seemed to think so as well, last time through. do you ever have any issues playing the same songs after nearly 20 years?

RP: I never understood that. You don’t want to play the songs? For me, I’m all about the fans this time. Back in the day, it was so hard for me to just understand fans and people who liked me. It was so weird. When you’re so self-destructive and so bad to yourself, how can you understand when people like you? Now, it’s, like, I’m writing it down: Is that what you want to hear? I need to put that in the set list tomorrow because that’s what the fans want to hear. The fans put me where I’m at and I need them.

speaking of which, how do you keep it interesting in the studio after all these years?

RP: A lot of bands find a niche and go ‘that’s us and that’s what we’re going to be forever.’ And it works and their fans expect the same thing. I think what happens is when fans grow older, there’s a new crop of young kids that are just getting into it. For the guys that have been around for a long time, like Bono, it’s always about blowing your own mind. It’s such a shock for people to realize “Take a Picture” is the “Hey, Man Nice Shot” band. It’s so confusing that you have to be a true fan to understand. I think it’s really about just being yourself.

DO you appreciate the live performance aspect more now than in the past, considering all the ways you have experienced it?

RP: When you’re on stage you’re like ‘It’s just people.’ It’s literally just people. They’ve got the same problems, they’ve got the same things, and they just want to see their kids. That’s the reality of the world. I think that back in the ’90’s we were like inventing anger. We were like fucking pissed! Like what? What, Kurt? Whatever, never mind.Apathy? It’s like what is our job? What do we want to do? For me, I want to make people happy. I want to feed my kids. I go to concerts, and the concerts are designed to entertain me. I didn’t really understand that. I thought it was almost an adversarial approach back in the early ‘90’s. Back when I was in Nine Inch Nails Trent and I would like throw shit at people, like throw cups of beer at them. It was so much anger extending of us that it was literally throwing beers at people. We were throwing glass beers at each other, and then he would tackle me. I think we were probably having troubles with our own lives. He’s actually a pretty substantially angry person to begin with. I’m actually a little more like I can get angry, but I hate getting angry. I hate being angry, but I really lose it when I get angry. I’m blessed. I’m comfortable, my life is good – and it’s time to give back to the world that’s been so beautiful to me. People pay money to see me sing and play the guitar. When we leave the stage, there’s a moment where I take the guitar off and I just listen to the applause. Some nights, it’s more applause than others, but think of all the people in the world who don’t get to have that experience. So to make a political record, I think it’s ballsy. John Lennon went “I’m huge – I’m going to start really saying something. It’s not just gonna be ‘She loves you/yeah yeah yeah.’ ” It’s not just gonna be that – it can’t be. It’s not from my soul. I have to talk about the things that are important to me. If people in the audience can identify with that and be inspired, then I’ve done my job.

FMF ARTIST: CANDLEBOX

SATURDAY APRIL21ST • WALL ST PLAZA •$10

WALL STREET PLAZA • APRIL 21st

Melodic post grunge veterans Candlebox are headlining closing night at the 2012 Florida Music Festival in support of their first studio album in nearly four years, Love Stories & Other Musings. After signing to their new label AudioNest/Fontana, Candlebox are carving their own role in today’s modern music scene, thanks to the support of their loyal fans. They have spent much of the past 5 years playing stateside and abroad for troops and appearing at festivals on multiple continents. Produced by Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn, A Perfect Circle,Tenacious D, Beck), Love Stories & Other Musings features nine new tracks and will include five bonus tracks, re-records of hits including “Far Behind” and “Cover Me.” We got on the phone with lead man Kevin Martin to talk about the new album, and coming back to a state that has always embraced the band and their sound.

First album in five years, what inspired you to break the silence and get back in the studio again?

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

KM: Years ago I read something that changed the way i look at everything! It struck so deeply that I have never forgotten it. It simply stated,“without music, life would be a mistake.” I’ve never forgotten it, even when i was struggling to find a song or a melody it kept me searching and frankly I could not imagine my life without it [music]. This record for me is no mistake, it is our music and our love for what a great gift we have been given. Love Stories & Other Musings is a new direction for us and I couldn’t be happier to share it with our fans.”

We are excited to welcome you back to Orlando for your FMF2012 closing night headlining performance. It seems Florida in general has always been a big supporter of the band, do you feel the same, and why do you think that is?

Kevin: Floridians love rock music and have been with us since 1993.We have always felt welcome and it is a great home away from home for Candlebox.

Over the years you guys have played most every type of venue and festival, what do you like about the festival atmosphere?

Kevin: People are all there to have a good time.Always a lot of electricity in the air and we love the great out doors.

You guys have managed to make albums for two decades, what is the secret to longevity and keeping the band in good creative spirits as a group?

Kevin: The fans, this is the best job in the world and we all feel the same way.The fans make it easy for us to be creative. There is also a lot of great new music and artists that inspire us.

FMF allows unsigned acts to make up the majority of the line up and seeking the ‘dream’, what advice would you have early on in their careers?

Kevin: Be true to yourself and your music.Trust in yourself and do not question your direction as long as you are being honest. The hit will show itself to you when you are not looking for it.

FMF ARTIST: 7 NATIONS

FRIDAY APRIL20th • WALL ST PLAZA •$10

WALL STREET PLAZA • APRIL 20th • 10PM

Seven Nations is not your father’s Celtic band. With a passionate, tender, and rollicking style that winningly veers from roots and folk to dance and fusion-rock, Seven Nations has earned a growing reputation as an adventurous band with a charismatic stage presence.

So you guys have pretty much been around the world, but we welcome you home to FMF2012, being a semi-local. How does Florida compare to the rest of your tour stops, on both the overall music fan side, and the Irish party side? Kirk: Thanks very much. The first thing that stands out about the Florida stops is how many people we see that know the band from elsewhere in the country or Canada. They always say..” What are you doing here?” ... and we always reply “No....what are YOU doing here?” ...Messes with our heads sometimes, but always good:) Florida can party Irish with the best of them. New York, Boston... Southside...just give them the right environment like Wall Street right?

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

What towns foreign or stateside are the most welcoming?

Kirk: Wow....we started the band in New York City years ago and have always been transient so, we never had the luxury of a home base.Whole regions like the Carolinas, Colorado, Northern California, the upper Midwest and greater New York have always been good to us. We’ve had surprises like Edinburgh, Scotland...Lancaster, England..and my favorite... San Juan, Puerto Rico. Bagpipes and fiddle?...Who would have thought?

How many skymiles do you put on the month of March and Sept, it seems you guys are on every Irish Fest!? Do you feel like you have to tour year round?

Kirk: Our touring through the season is definitely festival driven so there is not a lot of geographical reasoning to it.We’re usually doing two flights a week, meeting up with the truck, flying home for a few, then doing it again next week.We don’t feel like we have to tour year round but its best to keep busy.Wintering in Florida is good!!

You are one of the more mainstream acts to crossover from the Irish theme, how are your diehard fans when you start leaning more to the straight forward stuff?

Kirk: I have to tell you, we’ve lost a few along the way. But then again we’ve gained new ones and have even gotten a few back. No matter what kind of circumstance we like to throw our traditional learnings of Celtic music into, we always strive to maintain the integrity of what we have been taught and hope that that shines through.

You mentioned you are doing studio work for other musicians now, what type of projects are you working on?

Kirk: Oh, well I have a studio here in Orlando. This past winter has had kind of a country theme I guess. Just finished a complete CD start to finish for a talented up and coming singer songwriter from New York, Jamey Kelley. There’s a duet with Crystal Gail and a song with the Harlem choir on there. Also, just finished something for Billy McKnight and the Soul Circus Cowboys. We’re up next!

Not to be cliche, but how many beers does the band consume on an average show night?! Kirk: Who told you we drink beer?

KEVIN LYMAN

FMF INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT

We caught up with Kevin lyman to discuss his keynote interview at FMF2012, warped history in orlando, and his unique perspective on the business of music!

The Florida Music Festival & Conference celebrates more than a decade of introducing top tier music industry innovators to the aspiring music business students, regional industry and independent musicians, by turning FMF2012 up to 11! The 11th Annual edition is excited to announce a vital game changer in the business of live music, welcoming Warped Tour founder and seminal festival creator Kevin Lyman of 4Fini Productions. We caught up with Kevin on the even his Warped Tour 2012 line up announcement party to talk about the business and one of home away from home’s in the rock and roll world, Florida!

WHAT’S PLAYING ON KEVIN’S IPOD:

• Alvarez Kings Patience Is Strength Grand Union EP

• Michael Franti The Sound of Sunshine

it’s pretty exciting to bring our experiences at aXis Magazine QfullSofestival circle. The first Warped Tour we were the media sponsor and featured Sublime on the cover, and it ended up being one of the best rock and roll days of our collective staff’s lives! So how did Florida treat you overall in the early days and now?

Speaking of which, we have a lot of young students and musicians in QOrlando with UCF and Full Sail, what is your advice to the ‘music business’ student trying to break in? I just tell them to have patience, it doesn’t happen overnight. I had a Ahard time for 12 years, working in

the business, but I was also 20 years old and thinking ‘this is awesome! I’m throwing gear and people off stages!’ Financially the Warped Tour was a disaster in it’s first year. I had a lot of people around me that believed in the idea, and thought it seemed out of the box, and different enough for the business that they helped give it a second chance. If you are just getting into it, think different, and create a job for yourself.

How about the kids on was rough that first time through, the music biz side as Qmusicians? expected us to be doing AbigIteveryone venues because I had worked on Lollapalooza. But we realized it had to be in smaller venues, so we worked with smaller places like The Edge (now H20 on Livingston/Garland).A lot of the people didn’t get what we were trying to do, but places like Florida have always had a core group of kids that did. Although, we did have to bail Brad (Knowell of Sublime) out of jail every day, or two out of three days! He got arrested two of the three stops, we would bail him out and then drive him to the venue and put him on stage!

[ [ “ if you don’t get goosebumps when you open doors, then get out!”

It’s a world of freelancers. They need to know that they are going to have to make a living off a $1 a track. I tell musicians to learn the music business and do it themselves. Few artists are making it on majors, and you see indies like Fearless and Hopeless working in the artist favor.

A

We had a great tour with the first Sprite line up of Jay Z and 311 and then we set up the second tour with Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, and Sprite says no because ‘Ludacris drank a Pepsi on a commercial once.’ Taste of Chaos was great, and we are relaunching it. But we started seeing that all these metal bands on the Warped seemed to need their own festival. Not a tour they need to buy their way onto, but a metal world with a Warped attitude. So Mayhem was born. Starting a Mayhem Cruise at the end of this year Dec 7-11th with Lamb of God and Machinehead and a great line up. With guys like Brantley Gilbert, I started seeing outlaw country acts like

the ones I loved, you know,Willie and Waylon. So now we’re in our third year of the Country Throwdown, and it’s become a great festival.

How about that, as the genres and tastes change, how does your programming change?

Q

So when did you decide it was time to expand your music festival Qportfolio Considering all the shows you have and delve into other genres? been involved in over the years, Q What has and hasn’t worked for you? what would you say is the one classic

It’s not going to be perfect, but Ialways look at the staff and when they stress about that, I’m say,‘we’re working in music, we are lucky.’ And I have been lucky to have been doing this for 30 years. I’m coming to FMF, so I’m going to enjoy the trip and go fishing in Clearwater, then visit a friend in Lakeland, and come to the Festival and check out bands all weekend. I always go to a festival to check bands out and come home with something I never expected. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of new bands, it looks like you have a great line up. BURNSY'S 10 SIMPLE STEPS to enjoying your first

Ebelieve very year since the very first Florida Music Festival – I that was in 1872, if memory serves correctly –

thousands of people send me emails, letters and raunchy postcards asking, among other filthier things, what they can do to make sure that their first FMF experience is what the teenagers in the science club I volunteer with call a hella dope bomb ass experience. And the answer, friends, is rather complex. For starters, you can’t just step right into my insanely awesome lifestyle and expect to run with the big Chihuahuas. It takes many years and a liver the size of Tropicana Field to step up to my level. Also, you need to be ready for spontaneous dance battles to break out when rival gangs appear out of nowhere. After all, is there’s one thing that Orlando is well known for, it’s people who handle problems without violence. But this isn’t to say that you can’t start learning how to have fun like me and my awesome homeless friends, and that’s what I’m here for – to teach you things that will help you avoid being an adult. Today’s first lesson: Popping your FMF cherry and enjoying every last minute of it

Step 1: Be familiar with the headlining acts. Let’s face it – if you show up to FMF and you have no clue who the headlining acts are, you’re already screwing yourself out of a good time. This year’s headlining bands aren’t completely new to FMF either, as Filter has played the main stage before. By the holy law of the rock gods, they are required to make women’s pants fall off this year. The Dirty Heads and Candlebox, though, are as new to FMF as you are, so they, like you, are obligated to bring their Agame as well. And if anyone is caught slacking, it’s off to a Bieber concert. Step 2: Embrace the locals. Over the years, I’ve made some great new friends thanks to FMF and I’ve watched those bands go on to great things. The problem is that right now I can’t remember any of them, so I will just assume they are Pearl Jam, Green Day, U2, Adele and the Spice Girls (they loved being naked with me) and not bother going back to check if that’s true or not. Spread

L A IV T S E F IC S U M A ID R FLO

Step 5: Study up ahead of time. The entire

schedule for FMF is available at FloridaMusicFestival.com. Go check it out and then go to that YouTube site all the kids are talking about over their pog matches and search for some of the bands. Learn about them, embrace their music and look like an expert by fist-pumping and singing along. They’ll thank you for it.

Step 6: Don’t fist pump. Sorry, just realized that I endorsed fist-pumping, and I have punished myself with the required Bieber music.

Step 7: Treat all ladies with respect. This is an important point for me, because I’m widely considered to be the greatest gentleman in the entire state of Florida, if not the southeast, United States, North America, WestSpread your wings and check out the bands that play the ern Hemisphere, planet Earth or the Milky Way galaxy. I’m earlier time slots at the bars off the beaten path. If like that kind of respect. you need a primer on bands to go check out, you can’t go wrong with some of Central Florida’s veteran shredders. Step 9: Support your local musicians by purOff the top of my head, the following acts are worth your time: The Legendary JC’s (an absolute inexcusable must- chasing their CDs and t-shirts. The Black & Gold goes Green.. HOW DOES IT WORK: The Piezo floor sits on on a series of springs which are connected to small gears that absorbs the kinetic energy from dancing and converts it into usable electricity. For GreenWaves III, this usable electricity will be directed towards a battery. As the battery begins to fill up you will be able to see sizeable changes in the lighting and effects of the concert. When the battery fills up, expect surprises never before seen from a student run show at UCF. How can I experience the floor during GreenWaves III? GreenWaves III will be a general admission show, so floor access will be first come, first serve and very limited. The Entrances to the arena will be specifically labeled as to which lines are for floor access and which lines are for General Admission seating. Make sure to arrive to GreenWaves III early to not only make sure you can get your spot on the floor, but to also experience all of the Green exhibits, activities, and vendors that will be present leading up to the show!

“NOT ONLY IS THE AUDIENCE CREATING THE ENERGY BEING USED IN THE CONCERT, BUT THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY THAT THE CROWD CREATES CONTROLS THE LIGHTING AND SPECIAL EFFECTS OF THE CONCERT.“ 3rd Annual UCF Greenwaves Festival

WHEN: Thur, April 12th WHERE: UCF Arena

OUTDOOR STAGE (12 pm to 6 pm )

Alesso Dev 3Lau Killa Graham GreenWaves III is taking green sustainable practices and green events to the next level by incorporating a “piezo” dance floor that converts your dancing into electricity! Not only is the audience creating the energy being used in the concert, but the amount of energy that the crowd creates controls the lighting and special effects of the concert. Not only are we decreasing the overall amount of energy used by the concert, but we are creating the first interactive concert to date at UCF! 1.What are some of the major ways you are channeling the green aspect of Greenwaves and how do you think the students/community will react to your approaches? (Are you doing anything other than the floor technology?) . The main focus of this concert is to actually implement Green technologies and solutions into the show through the implementation of the Piezo flooring technology. The energy that is created from the movement and dancing from the crowd will control different aspects of lighting and special effects during the show, making it UCF’s first interactive concert. There are many surprises to be seen during the course of the show that are entirely in the hands (or feet) of the audience present for the show. Other ways we are going green is in the actual

40

lighting of the show itself. We are moving towards mostly an LED array for lighting fixtures, which use significantly less electricity than PAR Can lighting that we have used in past UCF Campus Activities Board (CAB) Concerts. We at the Campus Activities Board are very confident in the perception of the event from UCF students and the Orlando community because of how unique this event truly is to the area and concerts as a whole. The implementation of this technology is not only what the event is centered around, but it is also symbolic of what the future holds for concert events. In order to make this event inclusive to as many people as possible, the ticket prices are free for students and $20 for general admission. We have an incredible opportunity to do something extraordinary and forward thinking and we want as many people to experience GreenWaves III as possible. 2. Greenwaves is taking more of an electronic feel this year. How do you think fans will react to this seeing as Greenwaves started out more towards Rock music (ex.Anberlin) and what made you decide to change to electronic? GreenWaves was conceptualized in 2010 as an outdoor rock based festival for UCF.As GreenWaves has continued to grow and develop it became a festival that pushed the limits at UCF. The first year, the outdoor festival show was something that had never been tried at UCF. The ultimate result was overwhelming success with attention to the “green” side of the festival as well.As GreenWaves continued to grow, the Campus Activities Board then diversified to bring in many different genres of acts from reggae (the movement) to rap (J. Cole) and rock (We The Kings,Anberlin) to appeal to a much wider scope of students at the University. For GreenWaves III, the opportunity to utilize the Piezo flooring technology has completely changed the way this concert is being planned in comparison to concerts of the past. The move to electronic came from the concept of making a completely interactive concert that not only encapsulates the audience in music, but also allows them to actively control what is going on with lighting and special effects throughout the show. Looking at these two main variables, the only genre that could fit the huge task at hand was electronic. We are confident that this change in genre will both appeal to a new group of students that have yet

to experience GreenWaves, as well as appeal to past attendees of GreenWaves because of our growth in utilizing cutting edge Green technologies. 3. Is Greenwaves still going to be an all day event with bands/dj’s performing outside during the day? Although GreenWaves will be taking place on a Wednesday this year, we are still planning on making this an all day indoor/outdoor festival so students can experience different green initiatives throughout the day.The concert will not only be taking place inside the UCF Arena, but the outdoor activities will take place in front of the Arena leading up to the doors opening at 6 pm. UCF’s Environmental Coalition (ECO) is putting on the outdoor portion of this year’s festival. Activities will range from a Hybrid and Electric Car Showcase, a Sustainable Art Showcase, and other giveaways and green activities provided by both local and national vendors and sponsors, registered student organizations on campus, and university departments. There will also be two stages outside showcasing local Orlando DJ’s as well as a solar powered DJ.The scope of the concert has grown significantly from this past year, and having live

www.aXismag.com

music outdoors as well as several other green activities from the start of the festival until the doors open to the main event will ultimately provide for the most interactive GreenWaves experience yet. 4. How do you think Greenwaves has improved since it first started? GreenWaves improved in several main areas since the first GreenWaves in 2010. The Campus Activities Board now sees that GreenWaves is the largest concert that we produce during the academic year and because of that, the show budget has increased which has allowed us to continue to book bigger name artists, and put more budget towards lighting and sound for the event. GreenWaves III is no exception to this, because this year we are focused on bringing bigger talent and putting together a production never before seen from a student run show at UCF.We are implementing different lighting fixtures and special effects that have never been used in a student run show, and we want to make sure that the overall show quality that students are receiving for free rivals that of expensive shows in the Orlando area. 5. When will you be announcing who is performing to the public? The Campus Activities Board officially released the lineup for GreenWaves III on March 19, 2012.The Lineup will be as follows:Alesso, Dev, 3Lau, and KillaGraham. We are confident in this lineup due to Alesso’s strong presence in the electronic dance music scene, Dev’s multiple
