FOREWORD

HERE’S A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YA...

I guess it’s that time of the year again. Another issue, another 100 ciders or so consumed in the process. We’ve got some pretty cool shit in this issue, and I’m exited as ever to be featuring the work of some really sick young people. That’s what this magazine has been about from day one, and three issues in, it’s not slowing down. This issue is also named ‘Life’s A Bitch’ as a little 10 year tribute to Nas’s Illmatic record that I was listening to over and over while pulling this issue together and I think it’s pretty bang on. Sometimes life is a bitch, and you need to kick it in the balls and get the job done. Keep on keeping on. First up, we commandeered illustrator SPILLZAY to go to town on our cover. We gave him free reign to trash the thing. He could have been drawing dicks on it for all we knew, but he came up with the goods, and I’m pretty fucking stoked with what he came up with. We also have a chat with Cam Blackwell, a young photographer out of Hobart doing some cool shit, whose work is featured on the cover this issue, we discover New Zealand label Kingdom Of, get some internet inspired goodness from Bored Kids Who Draw, feature a collection of skate photographs by Eddy Hamra, discover the work of Brooklyn based artist Frank Stapp, Billy Zammit captures some of the biggest names in Australian street art going at it, and AXIOM writer Peter Macpherson tells us why he really fucking hates the Liberal Party, plus a bunch of other stuff that I can’t think of anymore. I hope this issue inspires you in some way: to pick up a camera, write an angry rant (not to me), paint, sketch, spray paint, design, cut shit up, skate, or maybe just sit on Tumblr all day. Because that’s what I get out of all this, seeing people doing cool shit makes me happy. Cheers, Lucy

editor, creative director, designer.

What makes you uncomfortable? Milk, hate the stuff.

What makes you uncomfortable? Being stagnant. Not moving forward and not seeing results. Losing motivation is my biggest fear.

What makes you uncomfortable? Silence.

What makes you uncomfortable? When girls wear work out gear out and they haven’t gone to the gym.

Who is your hero? I absolutely froth over Haruki Murakami! His literature is divine and out of the ordinary. He makes alleyway cats and grocery trips memorable.

What is your most listened to song? 1998 - Chet Faker

Who is your hero? The guy who invented tinder. What is your most listened to song? Echoes, by Pink Floyd. What do you wish you invented? Tinder.

What is your most listened to song? That’s a tough one. It changes week to week. At the moment it’s ‘Gold’ by Jaws.

Who is your hero? Grandad (George Heard)

What do you wish you invented? Post It notes.

Who is your hero? My hero is my pop as lame as that sounds. I always wonder if he would be proud of what I was doing. What is your most listened to song? My most listened song is probably ‘slow it down’ by the Lumineers. What do you wish you invented? I wish I invented uber!

What do you wish you invented? Twist off bottle caps.

PALO ALTO I am so god damn excited for this movie, I may submit myself to watching a cam recording before it’s even released. Featuring a killer cast, including James Franco, Nat Wolff, Emma Roberts and Val Kilmer. Directed by Gia Coppola (Sofia’s niece) and based on the book ‘Palo Alto : Stories’ by James Franco, it sees April (Roberts) the class virgin, in the throws of some serious student teacher shenanigans with Mr B (Franco). This is not your typical American high school tale of recklessness and sex. It’s chaotic, beautifully shot, with standout performances from its mainly young cast. For a directorial debut, Gia has knocked it out of the park. Palo Alto opens in limited release from June.

GRAND SCHEME WINTER 2014 The boys over at Grand Scheme have been doing some pretty cool shit of late. Every collection they drop is more solid than the last, Maui Wowie was killer, and the new collection for Winter 14 is full of shit you never knew you wanted until now. Top of our list is the 420 jersey seen here, and the T-Shirt with a reaper skating on a tombstone. What more could you ask for? To check out the full collection and to shop online, check out www.grandscheme.com.au

DZ DEATHRAYS - BLACK RAT There’s something in the water in Queensland...Axiom favorite Violent Soho are from the sunshine state, and now, DZ DEATHRAYS are making waves too. Described as a ‘Two piece thrash party band’ I’m yet to discover how two dudes with long hair can produce such an amazing record. The video for their single Reflective Skull is one of the weirdest fucking things I’ve seen in a while too. The crew at I OH YOU records who signs both DZ DEATHRAYS and Violent Soho have a knack for picking up acts with such a unique sound to whatever else is going on in Australian music. Just when you thought punk and grunge were slowly dying off and mediocre melodic hardcore bands were taking over, DZ DEATHRAYS produce a record that defies genres and just wants to party. Testament to that was when a few months ago they played a gig at Oxford Art Factory, quite a small venue, and you could hear that shit from the street. Kids were losing their shit, climbing on stage, on each other, and tearing the place up. Standout tracks from Black Rat include the go-to party track Gina Works At Hearts, sing along Keep Myself On Edge, and punchy Nightwalking. If there’s one record to spend your hard earned cash on, make it Black Rat. For tour dates and all that shit, check out www.dzdeathrays.com

ESTATE OF MIND Our friends over at Estate of Mind, aka, the coolest boutique in Sydney, have packed up shop and moved fully online. Gone are the days of rowdy basements parties in the old shop, where shit got weird on a number of occasions. But do not fear! Their e-boutique is fully stocked with all the best shit from KTZ, Assk Paris, Emma Mulholland, Joyrich, Roberto Piqueras and a whole bunch of new underground designers you’ve probably never heard of. Jump online and check it out. For full store details and to buy online, hit up www.estateofmind.com.au

THE CLIFF DIVE Brought to you by the boys who own Tio’s comes The Cliff Dive, in all its tacky, Tiki inspired glory. Housed in what used to be The Gaff nightclub (horrible memories) The Cliff Dive is one of the coolest bars to open of late. Sunken dance floor, bands every other night, and beers in cans only. Once inside, it’s that tropical and otherwordly, you feel as if you’re Ariel in the god damn little mermaid, complete with fake shells and glowing blue lights to hint at water. It’s so bad it’s good. And the cocktails are pretty lethal too. What more could you want? Maybe for the junkie outside to stop hassling you for a cigarette, but it is Darlinghurst after all. The Cliff Dive, 16-18 Oxford Square, Darlinghurst

ACID REIGN It’s cold, Winter is coming, and you need new hoodies, jackets, beanies and rugby jerseys. Well, the boys at Acid Reign have you sorted. Every garment designed by Acid Reign is hand screen printed on demand for the customer, their garments and quality are on point. Our top pick is the reversable coach jacket, with inner lining of Michelangelo’s The Creation Of Adam, it’s a winner. For more info and to buy online, check out www.acidreignshop.com

WILLESEE 420 – SHOT OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT HOUSE, APRIL 20 Featuring Jesse Willesee, sisters Jasmine and Liz Dinjar Photography by Raphael Walker – Styling by Jasmine Dinjar

ARTIST PROFILE - JESSE WILLESEE

Whether you dig or dislike the dude, conceptual artist Jesse Willesee is hard to ignore – mostly because he’s staring back at you from the daily newspaper thanks to his Tabloid Art campaign, which is kind of like a master class in creating media scandal and routinely lands his mug in the international press for such stunts as smoking weed outside police stations and Parliament House. Jesse shared with us the behind-thescenes images from his recent 420 protest and his recollections of the day. “Sydney’s Parliament House is in the CBD, on a main road, so there were people everywhere: so many tourists on guided tours. We had blunts that were so big and really smelly, it was obvious what was going on! Raph, the photographer, was so nervous he wouldn’t lift the camera up to his eye – he was literally just shooting from the hip, as they say, ha. When I did Marijuana is Not a Crime, I was taking it so seriously. I smoked weed in front of six police stations, and I was nervous for the first three. This time was way different - 420 is like my Christmas. So we were basically trying to smoke more weed than we’ve ever smoked in our lives. I was pretty relaxed by that point in the day, we’d already been “celebrating” a while. When the story broke, (the girls) Jasmine and her sister freaked out that their religious, marijuana-hating father would see them smoking weed in the Telegraph - haha. They didn’t realise how big it would go. I don’t love how the media draws my family into it so much, but I really liked the Daily Mail’s well-rounded coverage, even if they called it 204 instead of 420 a few times. I wanted to protest on 420. I didn’t just want to put up an Instagram of me smoking. How can you just celebrate if it’s still prohibited where you live, and you know in your head and heart it shouldn’t be? I have a new show in Sydney in June called CAMGIRL/CAMBOY, exploring the popularity of webcam sex work among young people for quick cash. (Designer) Demian Renucci is working with me on creating a capsule collection to tie in with the show. It’s going to be different kind of controversial. I can’t just keep smoking weed in front of stuff, haha”.

HERE AT AXIOM WE REALLY LOVE SEEING YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS KEEPING SHOOTING ON FILM ALIVE. CAM BLACKWELL IS NO EXCEPTION, WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE TASSIE BOY TO HAVE A CHAT ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON DOWN IN HOBART.

So straight up, how old are you and where are you currently living? I am 20, 21 in September! I live in Hobart, and I am so cold right now. I wish I was cold, I fucking hate summer. What’s the vibe like down in Tassie? How did you get into shooting on film down there? Is there much of that stuff happening in the way of culture? The vibes are pretty weird for my generation down here, if you don’t like getting drunk and dancing to the worst music ever, there’s not much to do hey…There are some cool places and people down here though, and I think Hobart is catching on to the Melbourne lifestyle a little bit, but things are still very slow. I started off with digital when I was younger, but I always hated editing, So when I started shooting with film I didn’t have to touch my photos much to get the look I wanted, and I guess I love the raw / natural look that film gives. The film and digital culture seems to be gradually getting bigger, there are some really talented people down here; it’s just harder to get the limelight I guess! The culture is definitely growing though, a lot more kids are showing interest these days, which is good to see. Yeah sick. That’s why I love film so much too, it feels more authentic. Are there many places to get it developed around you? I know it’s a struggle for me and I’m in the middle of Sydney! Well there were two places, and I used to take my negs to this small business as it was cheaper, and the dude fucked me around a bit, so I switched shops, and two weeks later the old dudes scanner caught on fire with the rest of his shop! So there’s only one place in the city at the moment, but there’s a couple other places in the ahh… ratchet areas? Haha. That’s pretty intense, some places want to send stock to Melbourne and that takes around two weeks for a neg scan. What are your mates like when you want to take their photo? Do they go all Zoolander on you? Haha yeah fuck that! Na man they’re so chill! I can imagine that they’re quite used to it now. Jeff and Luke (who I take most of my photos of) seem to have mastered the whole natural pose thing and even have their own looks now. (Shout outs to Trinlay and Ling Ling !! ) So they’re just used to you documenting their lives for the past few years? Yeah pretty much man! Like I said they’ve gotten pretty used to it by now! And yeah, they normally nail it; I tell them if they look stupid though. Jeff really likes being in front of the camera, which helps. That’s what I really dig about your photos, they capture really great candid moments. Youth nonchalance at its best. It seems like it’s a whole other world in Hobart. Like, I love that shot of the skate park in stark contrast to the mountain in the back. You just don’t see that in Sydney, everything is so urban. Thanks man, yeah that skate park is a fair bit out of the city, we go on trips a fair bit, the city gets pretty boring, but yeah the country side is bullshit down here, so we try and check it out as much as we can. Adventuring is one of the more fun things to do down here. Like getting high in the bush? Haha, word. I’ll take your word for it. So what’s next on the agenda for you? Keep documenting the kids of Hobart? Study some shit? The agenda consists on saving dollar bills! The kids and me want to move. And yeah I’d like to study in Melbourne at some stage. Yeah cool, I think Melbourne is the place to be right now, keep at it! www.camblackwell.tumblr.com @cam_blackwell

“We found ourselves both working in the same screen printing factory and realised that we shared similar interests revolving around business and had a like taste in fashion. We both always had a strong vision to start a clothing label, which expressed personal inspirations and experiences through the form of handcrafted garments. The brand itself is still under construction having grown from our early work. We have taken a more simplistic approach in the way we bring our designs to life incorporating symbolic elements that reflect our own interests. Each piece conveys a significant story that has inspired Joel and I in the direction we are choosing to take the brand. Initially, the creation of Acid Reign was a hobby in which we never envisioned to grow to even the size it is today. We enjoy creating pieces that we love, keeping in mind that our consumers are our number one priority.

BRAND PROFILE - KINGDOM OF

KINGDOM OF BORN IN NEW ZEALAND, KINGDOM OF IS THE COLLABORATION OF 3 YOUNG CREATIVES GIVING STREET WEAR A NEW SPIN. COMPLEX CONCEPTS ARE PUSHED TO CREATE A LABEL WITH A PERSONALITY, AND A CULTURE WITHIN ITSELF. AXIOM CAUGHT UP WITH SAM FRASER, ONE THIRD OF THE LABEL TO GET THE LOW DOWN ON THEIR NEW COLLECTION, SEASON ZERO.

89 - I WANT THE T OP

BRAND PROFILE - KINGDOM OF

How did the Kingdom Of originally start up? I’ve always been into fashion + design and such, and used to like hanging in a store called little black crown (closed now) they used to bring in all the sickest designers from overseas and round the country, anyway the guy Sheldon (who ran the store with his partner) saw some jewelry I had been making. (I was constantly loosing rings / breaking chains so had decided to use the skills I’d obtained in school - design tech - to make my own - mainly handmade one off pieces from silver) He liked the stuff I was doing and asked if I was interested in putting some stuff into his store. From there with my foot in that door, teamed up with my good friend Myles and our other good mate Phil to get the clothing stuff off the ground. Small run stuff, which started moving well and with the steep learning curve thing, kept progressing forward. We have just been pushing forward since then really. Yeah, I get that sense of collaboration from the label. How do you find working with two other people when designing a collection? Are there too many ideas floating around, or can you all come together and form one strong aesthetic? It’s great really. Being able to talk and bounce ideas of each other, while still maintaining a common goal in mind. With each of the guys coming from different backgrounds, with their own sets of skills and strengths working together can be very dynamic at times. Luckily we all maintain a similar aesthetic taste and will ride similar vibes. This is where collaboration really works best with us guys. All bringing ideas to the table, people will give their thoughts. Someone’s idea may be cut in half and molded into part of someone else’s idea. But in the end you get a far better product. At times, particularly at the start of a season, the scope of ideas can be quite considerable. But these can be stripped back and melded into a working plan through many scribbled bits of paper and a lot of banter. I feel like this collection, Season Zero has a really strong graphic element to it. Even down to the design of the look book and the graphic elements on the garments, what was the main inspiration for the new collection? With this collection and the look book especially I wanted the clothes to come across strict. Built simple yet firm, encompassing aspects from a “ghetto colliding with grunge aesthetic” but housing it within a minimalistic setting. Eliminating the excessive overtones to create garments full of subtle detail yet dominated by the blueprint of the surrounding culture.

That’s really cool. The styling is really thoughtful too: shooting Doc Martins, which are essentially a punk icon with street wear is a nice little touch to emphasize the concept. What’s the vibe like in New Zealand when it comes to young creatives? Is there much of an industry for street wear? Thanks, Phil and I work together with that all that work. It’s great working with him as we get on really well and tend to inspire each other constantly. It’s refreshing working with someone as talented as him, really helps stimulate you to want to do more. Create more I guess. New Zealand, Well the main cities at least have really been expanding culturally as of the last few years. People are more adventurous about what they will wear, especially in menswear. Street wear is really big here; people love that casual cool vibe. You are going from the beach to the bar but able to not be over dressed or under dressed for either. With pieces like ours, which can be dressed up or down so easily, it creates a really versatile wardrobe that people really love. It’s really positive for us to see the NZ market growing and us growing with it. Totally, In Sydney there seems to be new labels popping up every other day, and the majority of them are doing the same shit. It’s a line of 6 t-shirts screen-printed with some logo they’ve tried to design in illustrator and hope for the best. And that’s what I really like about Kingdom Of, it has such a strong aesthetic and personality it stands out in that aspect. Is everything screen-printed and manufactured in NZ? Yeah all of this collection is manufactured right here in NZ. Pretty much all of our stuff is, which is great! Manufacturers here are second to none and it’s good being able to be in a hands on setting with them. We have gone overseas in the past to get pants and jackets made, as they were very large quantity items, which in the timeline would only be ready in time by going overseas. That’s great to hear that everything is being kept quite local. What’s next for the label? Pushing out of NZ into Aus maybe? Growing in every direction, Aus is top of the agenda. We are also going full steam on summer, and preparing for shows + installations and some parties we have coming up. Awesome, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for you guys!

With over twenty artists on the scene over two solid days, (think Roach, Numskull, Beastman, Fintan Magee, Phibs, Thomas Jackson and Scott Marsh) The Big Wall was used as a canvas for all those involved. With the addition of some surprise guests rocking up and the constant flow of drinks the weekend was amazing thanks to the supportive crowd and good music. Yet another success from the crews at The Projects and The Hours.

DEAR AUSTRALIAN LIBERAL PARTY, WE HATE YOU. THIS FEDERAL BUDGET IS REALLY SET TO FUCK US OVER, BIG TIME. EXCEPT IF YOU’RE REALLY RICH OR GINA RINEHART, THEN YOU’RE SWEET. FOR THE YOUNG, DISABLED, UNEMPLOYED AND ELDERLY, WE’D BETTER BATTEN DOWN THE GOD DAMN HATCHES BECAUSE TONY ABBOTT AND HIS BAND OF MERRY FUCKWITS ARE COMING FOR YA. AXIOM WRITER PETER MACPHERSON GIVES US A PIECE OF HIS MIND ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.

Tony Abbott is a prick. There, we’ve all been thinking it, best just to get it out in the open. He’s a liar, a bully, a chauvinistic pig, and an all around slime bag that I think I’d hesitate to waste my urine on if he exploded in flames before my very eyes..Probably still would but, taking a cheeky wee on a politician is kind of a lifelong dream of mine. Now, there are those who might say that it isn’t about ‘personality politics’ and to a certain extent, I can agree with them. But to another, slightly more dominant extent, I feel an overwhelming urge to smack them square in the mouth and tell them that they’re wrong. A single man’s personality doesn’t entirely sum up the Liberal Party, and in that respect, this argument will always be a two edged sword. Tony Abbott is a figurehead; he’s the Liberal Party’s ideals, values and acumen all dressed up and smooshed into a well fitted white shirt and ‘Benevolent Blue’ tie (Unlike the filthy Commie Crimson of the Labor Party.) Yes, it’s true, clothes DON’T make the man, and the same can be said of a personality; it is actions that speak the loudest in this respect, but a personality is by far the best yardstick of an individual’s intentions. Look at some of the great leaders of history; Mandela, Lincoln, Churchill; men of flaw and virtue, each with their own unique brand of individuality; men who have all had greatness thrust upon them and risen to the challenge spectacularly, sort of like Maverick in Top Gun. But let me ask you this: does Tony Abbott really seem like the sort of bloke we can trust with shirtless, greased up volleyball high fives? Or the role of steering our nation through the next three years? Absolutely not. Time and time again, Mr. Abbott has shown himself to be a thoroughly unscrupulous individual. From his early days as a student at The University of Sydney and the infamous ‘wall punching‘ incident, to the misogynistic gaffs he leveled at Julia Gillard during her time as Prime Minister and all the way through to the present day where his thoughtless and insensitive bedside manner have made headlines around the world. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t think that an apology and the age old defense of ‘I shouldn’t have said it’ is enough to reconcile Mr. Abbott’s image with public criticality. So, why is it that there are still people out there who defend him? I’m talking of course about the voracious young Libs out there who bombard you with facts and beat you into submission with their warped perspectives and doctored facts. ‘Tony Abbott is doing great thin-‘ Prick. ‘Mr. Abbott is only human‘ Yeah. A Prick-y one. ‘He’s changing this country for the be-‘ Perhaps you’re not understanding what I’m getting at here? Allow me to be specific. He. Is. A. Prick. One has

to question how the Liberal party managed to garner any votes with Cap’n Tone at the helm, but I think that the answer to this is a fairly simple one: The Labor Party cocked up at a crucial time. They threw a party, had a few laughs and it all got a little out of hand; the host passed out and it was up to old Jules to clean up before inspection day. That’s where the Liberal Party came in; they’re like the older housemate who spends his time reading comic books and collecting action figurines in between sending angry letters to porn stars. Nobody likes him until there’s a crisis, and unfortunately, that crisis happened to be around election day. The general public consensus seems to be almost equatable with guilt; Labor made a bit of a mess of things and surely there’s not a single other party they could vote for, right? Libs are in, and we’ll all have to be reminded of the hangover for the next few years. Whereas many of us sit on the fence between Labor and Liberal, the hard-line measures presented in the budget are unusual at best and downright draconic at worst. For a Government that champions business and industry, the Liberals have a remarkably poor understanding of risk versus reward. Yes, we live in a first world democracy. Yes, we are one of the luckiest countries in the world. Yes, we are fast becoming a leader on the world stage (I like to think that it’s because of our mad breakdancing abilities, but that isn’t grounded in any factual evidence whatsoever) and at times, I think that we remind ourselves of this to remain optimistic; to remind ourselves that things could be far worse. But at such a crucial point in history, where our planet faces challenges the likes of which we have only begun to comprehend, where we have the chance to address, and actively affect the world in a positive way, we are now pedaling backwards. Slashing foreign aid, privatizing education, demonizing asylum seekers, scaling back conservation and renewable energy programs, taxing the already marginalized and pressing forward with industry that destroys our pristine environment and has worldwide ramifications: is this the way forward, Australia? Idealistic goals require realistic action in order to succeed, but does that mean we should give up on dreaming big? Should we just stick with what we know because it’s easy? From what I have come to learn of my adopted country, that is not the Australian way. We’re driving into the unknown and we’ve got a madman with a Medieval attitude at the wheel. Point blank; I can’t stand the Liberal Party (this time around at least), I can’t stand their plans for Australia and I certainly can’t stand the condescending, derisive, intolerant, back-pedalling, sycophantic, self-promoting, hook-nosed, metaphorical syphilitic festering sore of an individual that is Tony Abbott.
