THE AWTY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mr. Mark Schroeder

O

n behalf of the Board of Trustees of The Awty International School, I am pleased to provide this Annual Report to our school community and friends. The 2011-2012 school year saw Awty make tremendous advances on several fronts. First, our annual giving was the highest it has ever been. This was made possible through the tireless efforts of our annual Gala Chairs, Gina Gaston Elie, Shelly Hendry, and Kafi Slaughter, who helped the school raise more than $460,000 at the 2012 gala, Caribbean Carnaval: A Masquerade Ball. More than $110,000 was raised through the online silent auction. This was the most money ever raised in a silent auction for the school. The annual giving success should also be accredited to the incredibly efficient Annual Fund Chairs, Aimee and Tyler Flood, Marie-Louise and Bruno Jardin, Jill Munk, Suneeta and Raj Rangwani, and Corinne Rochette, who organized an army of class representatives in an effort to personally contact every family at Awty. The overall participation level from our targeted audience was 91%, with many classes achieving 100%. Awty staff and faculty gave the school their own ringing endorsement, having a 100% participation rate. These participation rates are significant for three reasons. First, while the bulk of The Awty International School’s annual budget is derived from tuition and fees, to

keep tuition and fees on a level comparable with other private institutions, the Annual Fund does provide an important piece of the total funding required to operate Awty each year. Second, as we solicit donors and foundations for large capital contributions, participation rates from within the Awty family are one key indicator which is looked to, to see if the school community itself is supportive of the institution. Finally, these participation rates are an indicator of the high esteem in which Awty is held by its parents, faculty, and staff. Thank you again, and please remember Awty again this year with a contribution to the 2012-2013 Annual Fund. Awty completed Phase I of its four-part Master Plan for the campus, with the construction of the Levant Foundation Building, and has completed one aspect of Phase II, the 440-space parking garage and maintenance facility. The second element of Phase II will be construction of a new pre-school building and a lower school addition. Funds are being raised now in order to be able to initiate that work. Progress on the Master Plan was only made possible by the hard work and generous support of a number of people and organizations. First, I want to thank Jamal Daniel for the work he has done chairing the Capital Campaign. Lisa Meacham chaired our Advancement Committee, which has produced excellent results. To

4

date, the campaign has raised over $8 million in new funds and commitments. This incredible level of fundraising in such a short span of time was made possible in large measure by generous grants from The Levant Foundation, Schlumberger, and GDF Suez. It gives me great pleasure to be able to thank them all publicly for their generosity. There have also been many other generous contributors, whose names appear within this report. After a break in fundraising over the summer, we have come back in the fall ready to resume our fundraising efforts to keep completion of Awty’s Master Plan on track. Awty’s continuing commitment to excellence is tangibly exemplified by the results of the past school year’s International Baccalaureate and French Baccalauréat test results, which, in both cases, were the best in the school’s history. And Awty’s success is no secret. For the entering 6th and 9th grade classes, the acceptance rate for offers of admission extended to prospective entering candidates doubled when compared to our average acceptance rate for the preceding ten years! Awty is in sound financial condition operationally, and with the strong sense of community we enjoy at Awty, I am confident we will continue to generate the funds from our Annual Fund and Capital Campaign to be able to support our existing programs and our construction plans.

Please join me both in celebrating Awty’s recent successes, and in giving generously when asked to do so this year.

A

THE AWTY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dr. Stephen Codrington

W

hen I arrived at Awty just over a year ago, I was welcomed by a quite extraordinary school community. I met deeply experienced and committed faculty, enthusiastic and committed parents, and most importantly, bright, aware, curious, and articulate students who were obviously passionate about their learning. The collective zeal for the school was infectious!

ments about the quality of the new teaching spaces, the width of the corridors, the excellent acoustics, the lovely use of color and natural light, and the renewed sense of creative energy that is readily apparent in the teaching as a result of the new environment. The school is deeply grateful to the many people who have helped the school to provide this new state-of-the-art, ecofriendly facility for its students.

There is a tremendous momentum at Awty to make our great school even better – and I choose the words “great school” carefully. In May 2012, our IB results were the best in the school’s history, with an average grade of 34.1 (the first time we have exceeded a mean of 34, the world average being 29.5). Our French Bac students achieved a 100% pass rate for the 11th year in a row. All 95 students in our graduating class were accepted into colleges and universities, 60 in the US and 35 in ten other countries. These numbers included six students who were accepted into Ivy League universities (three to Princeton) and six students who were accepted into Rice University. Eleven students were “Commended” by the National Merit Scholarship Competition and one student was awarded “Semi-Finalist” status.

Coinciding with the opening of these new facilities, we have seen a significant boost to our student numbers. We have started the 2012-13 academic year with 1,482 students, an increase of 186 students from the same time last year. These numbers mean that Awty is now the largest independent school in Houston and the largest single international school campus in the U.S.

Morale in the school was boosted by the opening of the new Levant Foundation Building and parking garage. We have received many glowingly positive com-

Despite these significant advances, Awty is not resting on the laurels of its past. In January 2012 an extensive community consultation process began that will lead to a new Strategic Vision for the period 2013-2018. The new Strategic Vision should position Awty for an even greater future, building on the foundations set by those before us while bringing new energy and ideas to our wonderful school.

L

THE AWTY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A LETTER FROM THE PROVISEUR Mr. Boualem Maizia

T

he 2012-2013 school year started unlike any other—and it wasn’t because for the first time we had more than 1,480 students. This incidentally made The Awty International School the largest international school in the United States, surpassing the Washington International School. No, this start of school was marked by new construction projects: the Levant Foundation Building and the new multi-story parking garage. We now have 36 additional classrooms and new office space for the administration. The 440-slot parking garage is a real blessing for the ever-growing number of teachers, parents, and visitors we have on campus. The new school year began with a palpable sense of energy. What can be more invigorating than to build up a school, to offer students and teachers classrooms equipped with smart boards and to leave behind the “temporary” buildings that far outlived their purpose? It is true that the school is changing its look; and indeed while the school’s facade has changed, the Awty spirit is still the same and I know that a great number of people will take care to see that it does not change. It is for this reason you have chosen this school and support it. All of these changes would have been impossible without the commitment and generosity of those who believe in

our school. I wish to thank them all most heartily. All have been invited to contribute according to their means either to the Annual Fund or to the Capital Campaign. I offer thanks as well to the companies that support us; their commitment is invaluable. This support and expression of confidence allows us to go forward and to be mindful of the school’s future. We want the school to be better yet, to be proud of its origins and of its past, and to be able to welcome its children in the best possible conditions. The plans that we dream today should be able to take shape tomorrow. And for this to be true, we need your support and confidence as never before.

L

TECHNOLOGY AT AWTY State-of-the-art technology can be seen at every corner of Awty’s campus from Promethean Interactive White Boards in the classrooms to the latest computers and software to wireless internet for all of the students and faculty. Technology plays such an important role in providing a top-notch education to our students and in preparing them for their future. The continued support and generosity of the Awty community helps Awty stay current with the latest advances in the instructional uses of technology and supports our infrastructure upgrades. Your gifts have helped enhance our technology program by allowing the school to: • Purchase new Promethean Interactive White Boards for the entire Lower School and Levant Foundation Building. • Certify current staff members to be Promethean trainers. These trainers are then able to train our faculty throughout the year and be available for any questions they may have. • Keep our software and hardware up to date, in order for our students to have the most current technology at their fingertips.

ON THE PLAYING FIELD Athletics is an important and integral part of the educational experience at The Awty International School. Our interscholastic athletics program promotes teamwork, encourages participation, and develops leadership in our students. Through contributions from the Awty community, the school is able to enhance this program and make a difference in the lives of each Awty athlete. Your gifts have helped the athletics program by allowing the school to: • Provide safe transportation to competitions off Awty’s campus. • Pay entry fees into tournaments. • Assist with the costs of travel, such as lodging and transportation, to different cities in Texas and surrounding states. • Provide equipment for students, faculty, and staff use in the weight rooms and dance studio.

AWTY & THE ARTS The Fine Arts programs at Awty provide opportunities for our students to learn and be expressive through both visual arts and performing arts. The arts help improve students’ overall academic performance as well as help them develop skills needed for their future, such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, and teamwork. Students who are actively engaged in arts education are likely to have higher test scores than those with little to no involvement. Involvement in the arts allows students to express themselves creatively and bolsters their self-confidence. Your support of the arts at The Awty International School enhances these opportunities by providing: • Art supplies and equipment for art and photography classes. • Costumes and props for theater productions. • Sheet music and instruments for choir, band, and orchestra.

THE AWTY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A DIVERSE CAMPUS Awty is a very unique school thanks to the diversity among our student body as well as our staff and faculty. There are approximately 55 different nationalities represented on Awty’s campus this year. Your generosity celebrates our diversity by supporting programs our faculty and staff members host throughout the school year like Fiesta de Mayo, Galette des Rois, Rosca de Reyes, Go Texan Day, Newcomer’s Day, Holiday Tree Lighting, and so many others. These programs not only celebrate Awty’s diversity, but have also become well loved traditions at the school. Every year, Awty seeks to enroll qualified students who will be successful in our programs and who will add to the diversity of our school community. Monetary donations from the Awty community support the cost of tuition for talented students who would not otherwise be able to attend Awty. We are able to give these deserving students the opportunity of an Awty education by providing scholarships and financial aid to them thanks to these generous contributions. Over $500,000 in financial aid is awarded annually.

The employees at Awty also represent nearly 30 different nationalities including American, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish to name a few. With the help of monetary donations from the Awty community, the school is able to maintain competitive salaries and superior health benefits for all staff and faculty. These contributions also help to provide the employees with several opportunities throughout the school year to attend educational conferences and professional development classes. Through the recent establishment of the Teacher’s Leadership and Excellence Fund, the school has a much needed opportunity to recognize our faculty members. The purpose of this fund is to honor and motivate pedagogical excellence, as well as to acknowledge outstanding contributions of longtime faculty and staff who mentor and help develop excellence in new teachers.
