Explore Cumbria whatever the weather with the National Trust February half term is here at last, and the days are finally a little longer. The only problem that remains; will it shine or will it rain? At the National Trust, we’ve got all sorts going on across the Lakes, so you can enjoy a family day out whatever the weather. At Sizergh, follow the snowflake trail to learn more about these tiny natural wonders, or go wild on the woodland play trail. If the day’s a bit drizzly, warm up with a hot chocolate in the cafe or pop inside to explore the medieval house. At Wray Castle, take the great drawing challenge, following in the footsteps of the young Beatrix Potter who loved to sketch and explore. If the sun’s out, it’s the perfect spot for a stroll along the shores of Windermere. At Fell Foot, children can drop-in and join an orienteering workshop whilst grown-ups enjoy a brew with a view in the potting shed café. At Great Langdale and Grasmere, enjoy a frosty family-friendly winter walk where you’re never far from a spot to sit by the fire. Whether that’s at Sticklebarn, the National Trust’s lakeland pub, or at Allan Bank, William Wordsworth’s former home.

Let’s hear it for the boys Traditionally, performing arts have seen to be a sector that attracts more girls than boys, but with a current curriculum covering street dance, pop singing, acting for camera as well as musical theatre, Razzamataz theatre schools is proud of the number of boys and young men within the network of schools. “Boys love to dance and perform from a young age just as much as girls,” adds Debbie, Principal at Razzamataz school in Carlisle, “Our Tots classes for toddlers have many boys who love to get involved in the imaginary worlds the teachers create. But as boys grow up, they do become more self-conscious and often start to see performing as a girl’s activity. At Razzamataz, we are so proud that this is really not the case and our students, both girls and boys, work together and support each other to create brilliant work both on and off stage.” Parents wanting to get their sons into a healthy activity for the New Year can look to the many benefits that performing arts offers: better posture, increased self-confidence, more discipline and focus, teamwork, creating individuals, better co-ordination, a connection to emotions and learning to be fearless. With many parents concerned over the amount of time their children spend on screens, being part of a theatre school may be just the solution they are looking for.

Visit nationaltrust.org.uk/lake-district for details.

Early on in 2019, Razzamataz Schools in the area are offering a number of free trial sessions. These fun classes are for all children whatever their background or ability and there is a strong focus on keeping fit and active, having fun and making friends.

Finding Confidence through Comedy with...

Harry Hill

Primary Times teams up with Harry Hill to discuss how children can get more into comedy

H

arry Hill is one of the UK’s most beloved comedians. He has brought laughter to our homes through TV shows such as ITV’s Alien Fun Capsule, TV Burp and the voice of You’ve Been Framed. Now he’s sharing his comic knowledge with the younger generation to encourage them to get into comedy. After the success of his children’s book, Matt Millz, Harry launched a tour of ‘kidz’ with a sequel to the series, Matt Millz Stands Up. “Kids always ask me how to get into comedy, so I began the Matt Millz series to answer some of their questions. I was doing a book tour for the latest novel and found it quite limiting, so I thought I’d do a tour and a signing after the show, as I talk about how to become funny. It’s also easier to demonstrate physical comedy.” Despite his natural talent, Harry’s career didn’t begin in comedy, but in medicine as a doctor. “I struggled with the long hours as a doctor, and I think if I’d had more encouragement as a child to take up

comedy then I wouldn’t have spent five years at medical school. But becoming a comedian didn’t seem as achievable back then.” Comedy was a big part of Harry’s childhood. “I loved comedy growing up as it connected me with the outside world, as I lived in a rural part of Kent. I would memorise jokes I’d heard on TV and repeat them to everyone at school.” “Comedy definitely improved my confidence. I would tell everyone the jokes I’d heard, even though I think my Mum would have described me as a very shy child.” “Comedy, and the confidence found in making someone laugh is really useful. We all have to get up and do a speech at some point in our lives, whether that’s at work, a wedding, or on stage. I know I’m biased but I think comedy is incredibly important.” “The one thing I hope that kids took from my tour and the book is that they should have fun. I’ve always thought if you really want to do something, then you can do it. Reach for the stars.”

Top Tips Inspiration can come from anywhere for jokes, and you can always expand on a joke once you know which jokes work. Keep going. It won’t always be fun, or the jokes might not always go so well, but it will always be worth continuing if it’s what you want to do. Keep at it and you’ll get there. Have fun!

6 - www.primarytimes.co.uk/cumbria

primarytimescumbria

However, Harry’s greatest piece of advice is relatively simple. “Keep going. We all have bad gigs, not every joke will be received well, but the difference between a comedian and someone who is just “funny” is how to deal with failure. You just keep going.”

Whether you’re a stay at home parent, or you already have a job but would like the chance to make some extra money for those little luxuries or just to make ends meet, working as a partner with Essens is a great way to make money and friends.

But don’t just take my word for it... We've been with a few network marketing companies but always found the product either too expensive or not something everyone wants. Everyone loves perfume! We started Essens 17 months ago because we were fed up of working 7 days a week! After 6 months we had qualified for a luxury holiday and after only 10 months we were able to quit our pub! We've now qualified for a BMW! The products are excellent. The company is amazing. The compensation plan is one of the best I've seen, we are earning over £4k every month and now work from home helping others do the same. Justine & Phillip Smith—Gold Managers

I joined Essens because my daughter has really bad anxiety and depression and I wanted to retire early to help. She was driving around in a dangerous car so I wanted to reach the incentive to get a company car for her and to earn enough to help support her and reduce her mental health issues. I started about 18 months ago through Justine as I knew her from another company. As it was only £25 investment I decided I had nothing to lose and here I am now, making more money than I ever imagined and happily helping my team to do the same. Linda Milton—Silver Manager

I started with Essens first as a way to help with our family’s financial situation. I was on

maternity leave with twins and our sole income came from Chris. I felt that even if I could make £50 a month it would help. From the moment I started I loved it, it has opened me up and I've made friendships that I know will last a life time. I then got Chris to take the sample pack into work with him and his colleagues went crazy for the fragrances. He actually got my first recruit. We now work on it together and earn way more than £50 a month. Ashley Dawson & Chris Black—Partners I joined Essens 13 months ago because I was desperate to earn an income but it had to fit round my family. I lost my job when I was 8 weeks pregnant with my now 2-year-old twins, Harry and Ella. Essens gives me the flexibility to work when I can, however I can and there is no pressure from my upline. You work for yourself, so you get back what you put in. The help and support are exceptional, I’m so happy I found Essens when I did, this is now my full-time job and I couldn't be happier working for myself. Michaela Campbell—Partner

As for games, there are a whole host of different options that will keep the children happy and keep your costs low. Some of our favourites include the old classics of pass the parcel, musical chairs, and pin the tail on the donkey. Alternatively, for a more modern party game, a piĂąata is becoming an increasing favourite amongst children. They are available at most major UK supermarkets, and are sure to keep the kids laughing for ages as they eagerly try and retrieve the treats inside. Finally, before children leave a birthday party, they are usually expected to take a party bag home with them. Rather than the

classic cellophane bag filled with sweeties, balloons, and pencils, there are several alternatives which will keep your party guests smiling, without costing a fortune. Some of our favourites include a small children’s story book, a packet of seeds for children to grow their own vegetables, or some home-baked treats wrapped up with a bow.
