Your fashion is fab!

Fashionista top tips on how you can look amazing!

Top tips on how you can look great all year round and the perfect reason to hit the shops, Fashionista tells you where you’ll find the best buys.

1. Everyone loves having a clear out, so if you haven’t worn it for over six months then get rid of it! Also rotate your wardrobe to suit the seasons, for instance in winter pack away your summer clothes so that you don’t have to fight through summer dresses to get to that winter jumper and do the same in the summer with your winter clothes.

Here at Fashionista we believe that the best accessory to go with any outfit is your confidence. If you want to look good it is important that you feel good too! Make sure you wear the right clothes for your shape and enjoy your life to the full. No matter your age, race or shape you are beautiful, and if you follow these simple Fashionista steps then you will just enhance your beauty.

F

Lucy of the Miss Lucy Loves Blog gave Fashionista these tips just for you! 1. Wear what your comfortable in. Yes, those heels and skintight dress might look amazing but if you have to walk anywhere or eat anything then it's all going to go to pot very quickly. If you're comfortable, you're confident. 2. It might be a bit boring, but choose a colour scheme for your wardrobe which looks great with your skin tone, eye colour and hair colour. When you're out shopping, check that the item will complement the rest of your wardrobe and you will always look put together. 3. Layers are your friend if you live in the UK. Bulk buy plain tank tops so you've always got loads to hand, just in case the rest are in the wash!

Fashionista Confidence!

2. Good underwear is key to looking good. Your mother may say always wear matching underwear but Fashionista believe it is all to do with structuring, if you wear the right bra that top you love will look a lot better - trust us! 3. Make sure your clothes fit properly, you want people to be looking at how gorgeous you are not because you have a dress thats two sizes too big or too small. Always take someone you trust with you when you go clothes shopping, get them to tell you if an outfit shows off your best or bad bits.

Jewels all over the world!

When two sisters from Teesside decided to earn some extra cash little did they know that they would become one of the most exciting jewellery brands in the country, Amy Woodhouse tells their story.

J

ess and Emily Jane Lathan established Rock ‘N Rose in 2007 while they were both studying full time, Jess was at University and Emily was at College. Without any experience in jewellery making they decided to make some vintage inspired pieces from home, “We initially created a few unique pieces for ourselves, which caught the eye of friends and family.” says Jess, “We began to sell to our close friends and family and eventually Emily created an online store without any prior training.”

“If we love it, we’ll brand it Rock ‘N Rose”

featuring an artists palette and a birds cage perfect for summer weddings and picnics in the park!

Jess and Emily Lathan to grow and be exposed to a wide audience of fashion focussed individuals. In a recent issue of Now Magazine, Pixie Lott referred to Rock ‘N Rose as her favourite jewellery brand alongside Disney Couture and Tiffany & Co. A real honour for us!”

Much hard work goes into the pieces sold by Rock ‘N Rose with their inspiration coming from ‘the years we missed, the If winning awards isn’t the way to see how Hollywood era, romance, magpies and a good successful Rock ‘N Rose has become then the cup of tea.’ Each piece is specially made with army of celebrity fans is! “Many a wide range of jewellery available, from celebrities have been spotted wearing Rock Scrabble necklaces and Friendship bracelets ‘N Rose including Pixie Lott, Fearne Cotton, to Tea cup rings and fashion Turbans. SUMMER LOVIN’ With Denise is the creator of the Swelle Life blog and boutique, the perfect place for all your fashion needs. Whether you want to swoon over beautiful dresses, amazing houses or delicious looking cupcakes it is all in one place. Denise is originally from Canada and spent time living in heart of fashion, Paris. For more information visit: www.theswellelife.com

Maui Wowie Florals in summer are nothing new, especially now that we’re treated to them year-round. But 2012 has ditched the ditzy and gone full-on tropical with big and bold prints straight out of a Hawaiian Tiki party. Wear the traditional island look as an oversized beach shirt, or take it forward with high-tech digital prints that incorporate Hawaiian flowers.

DENISE

Good news, free spirits! Thanks to the spring/summer collections showing us everything from Roaring Twenties to 90s grungy flannels (really) and every decade in between, we can pick and choose to wear what we love most during our precious few warm weeks. And should we not have a say anyway? Blind trend-following is only good if you have a penchant for filling your Oxfam donation bag every two months. Times are tough and we need to make our wardrobe purchases count, so let’s forget the pyjama outfits from the catwalks and focus on the best of the trends: quality pieces that are firmly rooted in classic styling, with heaps of fresh, sensible flair to keep us enamoured a few years on.

Left: Tropical goes high fashion at Stella McCartney with kaleidoscope digital printed dresses and matching leggings.

Candy Colours Summer is the time to let go of your colour shyness and embrace the full spectrum of pastels and brights. No one does candy colour chic like Jonathan Saunders; his elegant cuts, fluid fabrics and feminine, graphic prints create a playful sophistication that can be worn at any age.

Dapper Flapper Every fashionista’s wardrobe must have a bit of that glorious Art Deco graphic style that drips with lush embellishments on luxurious fabrics. Sound too much for your causal lifestyle? Fear not, the look can translated to beachy retreats where an espadrille or flip-flop is the perfect companion.

Festival Fashion And it wouldn’t be summer in England without the music festivals, which are surely a ruse to keep the Wellington industry booming. This is the place where grunge is not only ok but practically uniform. Just don’t be silly and spend designer money on this trend unless you have the budget of Kate Moss – not only will your outfit endure a beating, but this look anywhere but Glasto will make you look like you’ve arrived in a Kurt Cobain-driven time machine! Fashionista Look

ta s i n o i h s Fa al! i c e p s r o edit

Welcome to my Wardrobe.

As a fashion lover I’ve always got my eye out for pieces to add to my collect, so now I welcome you to have a peek in my wardrobe. Here are a few of Amy Woodhouse’s favourite pieces. I like to have lots of tops in my wardrobe, they are very easy to mix and match with other items and are great for layering. I tend to wear batwing sleeved tops with leggings as the details tend to distract the eye from bits that I want to keep out of the spotlight.

I love leggings and practically live in them. I have numerous pairs in lots of colours and patterns, they're a must have item for me!

A good cut skirt works wonders, I love the bright purple of this one and it was a real bargain. The overlap of material at the front is fab for hiding my tummy especially after a big meal!

One thing which is important when buying clothes is making sure the outfit suits your body shape. What might look good on my size eight friend won’t work so well on my curves, to be confident in what you wear you need to make sure it fits properly.

Fashionista Look I like to have my own style. Sometimes I’ll follow trends if I think I can wear them well, every now and then I get it wrong but that’s to be expected. No one is perfect. Not even in fashion.

This maxi dress hides a multitude of sins, I wore it on holiday last year and it was the perfect day to night dress. The back detailing stops the dress from being too plain and it looks lovely on, the only bad thing is that it makes me want to go on holiday again!

I have lots of sheer blouses in my wardrobe, much like my tops they are a staple to my outfits. I love that they can dress up any outfit, whether smart or casual, they look fab with jeggings and flats.

Of all the shoes I own my favourites are wedges. I love how comfy they are to walk in and these ones have a little leopard detailing to add to any plan outfit.

This print dress is my fail safe outfit, teamed with tights and heels. It's a very flattering dress and the print is a great way to jazz up any outfit. 58

I prefer to wear modern clothes such as maxi dresses, skinny jeans, t-shirts and cardigans. I’m not a fan of vintage clothing but think that if you wear it right it can look amazing, just as long as you wear high heels with it – flat shoes are a big no!

Make Up for Summer Nights FASHIONISTA shows you how to create the hottest summer looks in easy to follow steps so you don’t have to work up a sweat.

I like going out with make up on, my favourite pieces are: Eyeliner, Mascara and Lip Gloss – I never go anywhere without these! I really like glossy nail varnish but love the crackle nail varnish you can buy. I think that some people can wear too much make up but I prefer a more natural look.

Ensure your face is clean and moisturised before applying a base, Fashionista has used Rimmel foundation and facial powder to create a pore less look. Add bronzer for an extra sun kissed feel. Next focus on your eyes, go for a bold colour to draw attention, in this case a Bright Blue Fearne Cotton eye palette has been used to create the look. Begin by covering your lids in the eye shadow, carefully trace the colour along your bottom lashes and finish up by gently smoothing out the eye shadow for complete coverage. Coat your lashes with a voluming mascara such as Soap and Glory: Thick and Fast. Finally go for nude lips so that you don’t attract from the eyes.

For this look go for a radiant blush base, cover using foundation and add a small amount of blusher for a summer feel. Cover your eyelids in a plain eyeshadow, Avon Colour Trio has been used here to create a base for the cat eyes. Use a gel eyeliner such as Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama, work from the inside of your eye and follow the lash line. When you reach the outer of your eye create a flick for added drama.

Apply a simple base coat to your face, ensuring that blemishes are covered and that you look refreshed. Begin work on your lips by applying a thin coat of foundation to make sure that the colour stays in place. Line your lips with a lip pencil, Fashionista recommends Boots Number 7 range, match the colour of the pencil to your lipstick. Cover your lips in the peachy colour, Rimmel Lipstick works well and comes in a range of colours perfect for pouting.

Dear Fashionista, I’d just like to say I really enjoyed your feature on local fashion; I loved reading about the street style in my town. I’ve even tried to create some of the looks in my spare time and have found that your tips were really helpful. The piece on what to look out for next season has helped me to expand my wardrobe and showing the article to my parents meant that I was allowed to spend all my pocket money on new clothes! Thanks Fashionista! I’d also like to say that the inspiration piece about the teen football star was fantastic, it’s good to see that girls from our area can take part in such big events and be recognised for their achievements and talent. Katy, Seaton Carew

Hi Fashionista, I’m so excited for summer to get here! I can’t wait to jet off on a family holiday and spend time lazing around the pool instead of spending my time indoors doing schoolwork. FASHIONISTA YOUR PROBLEMS Acne Troubles

Birthday Bother

Dear Fashionista, I’m 14 years old and suffer with terrible acne. I feel conscious of my looks all day and think that people are staring at my spots. It’s ruining my life! Help!

Dear Fashionista, It was my birthday recently and my best friend got me a really expensive present. My mum thinks I should give it back because I can’t afford to get her something of the same value back. I feel bad because I want to keep it, what should I do?

Anonymous, 14 Spots are something we all hate but we all get them! The best thing to do is try to make sure your skin is as clean as possible. Wash your face every morning and night with a spot reducing cleanser, if they persist then take a trip to your doctors and see if they can help you a little more.

Emma, 15

Good luck and here’s to fresh looking skin!

Don’t worry about the value, it’s the thought that counts!

F

Lost and Found Dear Fashionista, While I was out shopping with my friends I found a purse, I took it home with me and haven’t told anyone because I know my parents are struggling for money. Should I keep quiet and help my family or confess to keeping it? Jessie, 13 You really need to tell someone what you’ve found and get in touch with the police as soon as possible. Someone out there has lost something very important to them and although you have troubles of your own it’s not right that you try to solve them by making someone else pay.

Why not have a chat to your friend about your mums worries or maybe get your mum to speak to your friends mum. If your friend has got you a gift then you should be allowed to keep it but only if it is ok.

Online Bullies Dear Fashionista, I’ve been getting nasty messages from a girl online, I’ve seen her around school but she’s never spoke to me face to face. The messages are upsetting and I don’t know what to do because she’s never actually done anything. Help! Amanda, 14 It’s really important that you tell someone about what is happening. Online bullying is serious and although the bully may not have done anything physical to you they are still doing a bad thing that must be stopped. Maybe talk to an adult you trust or confide in a friend who can help. 122 May 2012

Trust issues

Concerned friend

Dear Fashionista, I’m sick of my mum, she never lets me do anything! All my friends are allowed to go to the town by themselves and I’m not. I’m 13 and think I should be allowed some freedom but my mum just won’t let me! What can I do?

Dear Fashionista, My friend has been making herself sick after someone called her fat, I’m really worried about it but don’t know how I can help. Do I tell her mum or see if I can help on my own?

Kylie, 16

You should tell someone you trust about this now, your friend could be causing herself serious damage by making herself sick. Try to get her to talk to someone who can help and also stop the people who are calling her.

Why not try to earn the trust of your mum. If you show her that you are a responsible young women then you should be allowed out with your friends soon. Most importantly remember that your mum cares about you and is probably just worried about your safety.

Anonymous, 15

Seeing Stars: A Year of Celebrity

About You and Shine A Light filling the air resulted in a great start to the year. I’ve seen McFly a few times in the past and each and every time they get better and to be honest a whole lot hotter! After McFly I experienced the most nerve-wracking event of my life - a real life premiere! And if that wasn’t enough the hottest man on the planet was attending - Robert Pattinson!

Amy Woodhouse spent 2011 reaching for the stars, over the year she met celebrities, saw shows and even attended a special fan event. Fashionista joins her in a year of celebrity.

L

ike every other girl in the country I’m a huge fan of our celebs and I’ve always wanted to experience the showbiz lifestyle, now I don’t mean jet setting around the world living the life of Hannah Montana (although that would be nice, I have a terrible singing voice and there’s no way I could rock a wig as well as Miley Cyrus) so I thought I’d spend the year attending signings and concerts, and some how I even managed to attend a premiere! As 2011 was on the horizon I decided to go in with a bang and headed to an Olly Murs signing in Newcastle.

After a long day of travelling, chatting and trying to control my nerves it was time for the premiere to begin. The crowd was huge and crushing but as the stars arrived, and as I caught a glimpse of RPattz I knew it was worth it (although my feet would argue about it the day after!) As RPattz made his way around the crowd he really was better looking in real life!

Although he had hundreds of fans queuing to see him he was more than happy to spend time with everyone, having a natter and signing his album. Despite the freezing temperatures the chance to grab a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek with the cheeky chap himself was well worth it and the perfect end to 2010!

He spent time chatting, signing and posing with fans, a true showbiz gent! And although I was a nervous mess when I had my picture taken with him, (photo above) it really was a dream come true. Not only did RPattz attend the premiere but his co-star Reese Witherspoon was there waving at fans as she talked to the press before she was rushed away, the cast of TOWIE posed for the paps and Marvin from JLS and Rochelle from The Saturdays came over for a quick chat before rushing away to see the film.

“As R-Pattz made his way around the crowd he really was better looking in real life!” I began 2011 with a McFly concert, (photo below) the sweet sounds of All

Photos: Amy Woodhouse

“I even had a natter to Danny about my summer holiday!”

Mcfly 126 May 2012

FASHIONISTA

The premiere took a while to get over, even now the excitement of the day gets me, but as that began to die down it was time for another concert - this time it was Kings of Leon! Rocking in to the summer was perfect, as KoL played Sunderland performing classic songs such as Use Somebody and King of The Rodeo. The whole night was amazing and really got me in the summer mood.

Fashionista Celebrity

And summer was about to get a lot hotter with a special meet and greet with the McFly boys!

It was a completely unique experience for those who were part of their website SuperCity, and Amy With R-Pattz gave the boys a chance to get to know their fans. The boys were lovely and spent time with each fan, posing for pics, chatting and signing autographs - I even had a natter to Danny about my summer holiday! Now that I’d spent some time with the boys it time for the girls to put on their dancing shoes and bring the party to Newcastle. First up was Katy Perry, who brought her California Dreams tour to the arena where she transformed the stage into Candy Land, a place full of wonder and surprises! After a night of Teenage Dream-ing and Fireworks I left the arena ready to dance the night away! Next at the arena was the fabulous Rihanna, shocking fans with her bold outfits and flirtatious behaviour Rihanna rocked the stage and had every one dancing away to songs like We Found Love and Umbrella, it was a great way to end the year! After a year of fun, celebrities and singing I finally feel like a fully fledged fan girl, something which I’m very, very proud of!

Fashionista Good Reads

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

This book was recommended to me by one of my university tutors and since he gave it to me, I think I must have read it at least once a year for the last ten years and bought it for any number of friends. There’s something about Donna Tartt’s control over the pace of the story that just pulls me in every time. Even though you know from the beginning that nothing good is going to happen in this book, you are so drawn in, just like Richard, the narrator and, just like Richard, before you know it, you’re lost and desperate and everything is happening so fast. I love this book.

Room by Emma Donoghue

A friend recommended this to me last year and I literally didn’t sleep from the moment I opened it to the moment I finished. It was such a different and moving book. As an author and seeing it as a writing exercise I found it fascinating. As reader, looking at it as a book, I loved it. Love, love, love.

Sweet Valley High by Francine Pascal

I read like a maniac as a child and literally burned through the Sweet Valley books. I think they really influenced my decision to write a series with the I Heart books. Just please never ask me about Sweet Valley Confidential. Broke. My. Heart.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I worked in children’s publishing for a long time before I started writing full time and this was one of those books that made me remember why. I loved the story, was fascinated by the characters and desperate to know what happened next every time. I’m excited to see what they’ll do with the movie. FASHIONISTA

Remember Me to Harold Square by Paula Danziger

My favourite Paula Danziger book and the novel that started my love affair with New York City. The first time I visited, even though I was 25, I brought my battered copy of this with me and tried to hit up as many spots from the Serendipity Summer treasure hunt as I could.

Fashionista Inspiration

One life: Live it to the full.

Fashionista loves local superstars, those who are not famous for anything but their amazing achievements after having a tough time. This issue Amy Woodhouse looks at the inspiring work of Lisa Askew after she won her battle with cancer.

In 2007 Lisa Askew was diagnosed with cervical cancer, something which affects over 50 women a week in the UK. At first it was thought that Lisa could be easily treated but the discovery that the tumour had spread meant that she was going to have to undergo gruelling treatment, which made Mascot ‘Bea’ her lose all of her hair and crushed her dreams of having her own family. However with the support of her husband, Andrew, she made it through, Lisa says, “Andrew has been my hero and I am so grateful for everything he has done for me. He has been so strong, he is a true gentleman and I am so lucky to have him in my life.”

Five years on and Lisa is cancer free, despite all she has been through she has taken full advantage of her second chance and is living her life to the max. She spends as much of her time as possible raising awareness and

money for local charity, the Butterwick Hospice. As part of her work she is the Butterwick mascot ‘Bea’, where she has raised lots of money for the cause through making appearances at thousands of events.

“You only have one life, look after it!”

Lisa - Now

Raising awareness for one cause is not enough for Lisa and she has spent much of her time travelling the country in an attempt to lower the age of cervical cancer screening as part of her “Cervical cancer is pants, save lives for under 25’s!” campaign, she has even paid a visit to Downing Street with her petition. In between all of her charity work Lisa has taken every opportunity that has came her way, living to her mantra of “you only have one life, look after it!” and now she is set to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity after being chosen to be an olympic torch bearer when the torch comes to the North East. To see Lisa carrying the Olympic torch head to Hartelpool on June 17th and see if you can spot her!

Fashionista One to Watch

One To Watch RJ THOMPSON The North East is well known for it’s fab music scene, anyone who plays in the area always comments on what a great place it is to perform, with a range of gig venues it really is perfect for intimate encounters or huge show-stopping performances. Not only is the North East great for gigs but it is also buzzing with local talent, open mic nights and local festivals are amazing places to stop local talent and be a part of their rise to musical fame.

This issue of Fashionista has one for you to watch out for in the form of Newcastle singer/songwriter RJ Thompson, Amy Woodhouse speaks to him here. How did you start your career in music? “I’ve been a musician for as long as I remember. My folks bought me a toy drum set when I was 3 and I smashed the crap out of it! Haha! I eventually started taking lessons on the drums and then picked up a guitar and started writing songs. When I was 16, instead of doing A levels, I went off to study music at college where I met a load of great people, and I ended up recording my first album while I was still at college. It has all spiralled from there really.” What musically inspires you? “The musicians I work with. I’m lucky enough to know a load of great players, and I’m definitely at my most productive, in terms of writing songs, when I’ve spent time in rehearsals imagining how things could work with the full band.” What do you think of the North East Music Scene? “It’s great. There’s something happening every night. A few weeks ago I was watching an acoustic folk band in Newcastle one night, and the next I was heading to see an electro band. There’s a really diverse scene at the minute, and a load of great venues around the region.”

Photos: RJ Thompson

What are your plans for the future? “I’m currently writing a bunch of new songs which will hopefully come together to form my next EP or album. I’ve been lucky enough to gig with some great people, so I’ll be doing some more shows later in the year around the area and further afield.”

Do you have any advice for budding musicians? “I’m not really qualified yet to give advice to people because I’m still learning myself, but if I have learnt one thing it’s just to write music that you like. Don’t try to fit into a genre or a scene. Just do what you like and hopefully things will work out for you.” For more information on RJ visit his website: www.rjthompsonmusic.com
