She is the daughter of Sandra and Andy Riggins of Carlsbad. After the presentation, Kei performed "The Singer" by Michael Head, accompanied by Ruth Weber on the piano. RB Chorale Scholarship Winners Announced The RB Chorale awarded $10,000 this month to six promising musical students who will be attending college in the fall. Pat Bean, RB Chorale founder and director, commented of how talented the entire group was and stated "It wasn't easy for us to pick just six from a field of 22 applicants," said Pat. The Annual Guest Day of the Lake San Marcos South Course Ladies Golf Club, presided over by President, Jan Houston, (left), honored the Club's "Ambassador of Love," 101-year-young Margaret Carroll, who will be 102 in September and played golf until three years ago. She always has a hug and smile for everyone, has always been involved in the LSMSC Ladies Golf, and continues to be involved as the "Ambassador of Love." Pacific Belles Chorus Presents Scholarship
At their "All American Picnic" show recently, Pacific Belles Chorus, the Escondido chapter of Sweet Adelines International, presented their 2012 Notable Young Musician Scholarship Award
Kailyn O'Donnel, graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School, received $2,500. Accepted to eight Bachelor of Fine Arts programs, she has chosen Texas State University to nurture her singing, dancing and acting talents, with Broadway musical theatre her goal. Emily Balderrama earned $1,500, and has chosen the Music Department at Cal State University Fullerton. A Rancho Bernardo High School graduate, she has been playing the cello since age 10 and teaching private cello lessons since 7th trade. Alana Stroud, a Valley center High School graduate is on her way to Whittier College on an academic scholarship that will cover part of her tuition. She loves to sing with her church's praise band and plans to minor in Music while pursuing a degree in Public Relations. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Chase Pado, a graduate of Poway High School, was awarded $2,500, and plans to attend UC San Diego's music
program, focusing on piano and jazz studies. Besides being an accomplished jazz and classical pianist, he composes and performs in his own band, Tough Times Trio. Oscar Cid del Prado, a Valley Center High School graduate, has been accepted at Valparaiso University in Indiana where he plans to major in Music/Classical Vocals. Oscar picked up $1,500, and performed a rousing rendition of the classic Neapolitan song, "Funiculi, Funicula." Kimberly Durflinger has a passion for music. After graduating from Helix Charter High School, she plans to attend Eastman College of Music in Rochester, N.Y., pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Musical Performance. She was awarded $1,000. "Catch" Program in San Marcos Looking for a free fun children's activity this summer? The San Marcos Library and OASIS have teamed up to present CATCH Healthy Habits. CATCH is designed to introduce healthy lifestyle habits to children, ages 3-10, and their parents. Short lessons include the importance of fruit and vegetables to the secret of ordering healthy at a fast food restaurant. A healthy snack is included each session, and outside play includes games with hula hoops, parachutes, bean bags, and more. The program will be offered each Monday and Thursday through July 12. Free Literary Event Now Accepting Participants The Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, partnering with Oceanside Public Library, will hold "Write On, Oceanside! 2", a second annual book fair celebrating Oceanside-only authors. The committee is currently seeking participation from published Oceanside authors, and will consider published, self-published, and independent publisher works in the categories of non-fiction, fiction, children's books, teenage, how-to comics/graphic novels, poetry, plays, science fiction/horror, biography/autobiography, gardening, cookbooks, animals, photography/art, myster and spiritual. Independence Day Celebration Announced - The Knight’s of Columbus will celebrate Independence Day with a pancake breakfast in Webb Park at 11666 Avena Place, Rancho Bernardo. Open to the public, it is the site for the opening of festivities for the “Spirit of the 4th.” Breakfast will be served from 7am-11am; cost of $5/adults, $3/kids from 4-12, and free for the younger kids as well as military in uniform. Musical entertainment from the famous Menchtones of Barbershop Quartet fame singing patriotic songs will set the mood. All proceeds will be donated to the Veterans Village of San Diego to provide services to our military heroes in need. The event is under the direction of the St. Michael’s and San Rafael Councils of the Knight’s of Columbus. Free Composting Workshop in Escondido - A composting workshop will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 8:3010am, at the Escondido Community Garden. The workshop will be staffed by master composters and incloude instruction and demonstration in the building and maintenance of a backyard compost pile and worm bin. The workshop is free, and no registration is required. Will be canceled in the event of rain. The Community Garden is located on the west side of Centre City Parkway, just north of Hwy. 78. Composting workshops are held quarterly and hosted by the Escondido Community Garden and the City of Escondido. “Liberty" at Artists Gallery - A monthlong fine art exhibit celebration "Liberty" will be on display at the Escondido Art Association's Artists Gallery, 121 W. Grand Avenue, from Thursday, July 5 through Saturday, August 4. The collection includes original paintings, drawings and photographs submitted by local and regional artists, judged by representational and abstract artist Kris Petersen from Vista. Ribbon awards for the best artworks will be presented during an Artists' Reception on Saturday, July 14, from 58pm. The public is invited to mingle with the artists and enjoy free refreshments. The Kiwanis Club of Sunrise Vista will again hold their annual golf tournament, one of their major fundraisers, on Saturday, August 18, starting at 1:30pm. Proceeds will be used for programs to benefit children and families in the local community. Consider making a donation to the tournament that may be used as a raffle or auction item, as this is essential for the event to be successful. This year's event will be held at the Fallbrook Golf Club in Fallbrook, and they are partnering with the local chapter of Stand Up for Kids, an organization that assists homeless youth. The Kiwanis Club also works with the Boys and Girls Club, BUG (Bring Up Grades), New Haven Homes, local Scout Troops, Scholarships, Green Oak Ranch, Treasure Chest of Books in elementary schools, and more.
