It is a grisly subject matter, to be sure.

But how the thirteen apostles -- yes, there were thirteen, not twelve -- died is a most interesting question nonetheless, especially in light of the fact that few people actually know the answers.

For the record, the thirteenth apostle was Matthias (Hebrew translation: Mattityahu), not to be confused with the Apostle Matthew, aka Levi. Matthias was chosen by the remaining eleven after Judas Iscariot committed suicide by hanging himself after being overcome with personal guilt over betraying Jesus (Yeshua), known as the Christ, for thirty pieces of silver.

The original apostles who lived, followed, ate, and slept in the company of the historical Jesus were a most unlikely assemblage of human flesh: crude fishermen, a corrupt tax collector, simple peasants and common tradesmen, all with questionable moral and ethical backgrounds.

Simply put, these original followers were – at best – a checkered group, even by the standards of their own day. A raggle-taggle compilation whose collective infidelity is embarrassingly well-known to Biblical and secular scholars alike.

Their unofficial leader, Simon Peter (whom Jesus called ‘The Rock’), was anything but a rock when his faith was uprooted three times -- along with his integrity -- when Peter cowered and quickly denied to his accusers that he had any affiliation with the Nazarene Jesus -- not once -- but his denial was three times in succession within the span of thirty minutes.

Almost the entire group of disciples would eventually scatter like chaff in the wind when the ninth hour arrived for their Rabbi Jesus’ ignominious crucifixion at Calvary.

However, this period of vacillation and tenuous loyalty was later replaced by a mysterious attribute of unwavering faith – but only after the death of their teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, who had promised to send them a ‘comforter’ (or Holy Spirit) to strengthen and solidify their faith after his earthly departure.

Whether this theological notion was a reality which came into play is impossible to prove or disprove; yet after Jesus’ death on the cross, the abandoned group, remarkably, for their remaining years – never faltered again even unto abominable torture and horrific death.

How these apostles, individually, met their fate is not fodder for the weak or timid of heart. Historically, the methodology and bloodletting covered a wide range of torture, including being skinned alive, stoned, sawed into pieces, boiled, burned, and beheaded.

It is most compelling that such unimaginable, protracted suffering and excruciating painful death could have been avoided entirely, if only they had recant-

ed their religious views.

Yet, all of them did not.

In absolute truth, and by the strictures of historical evidence, there is no authentic, reliable source – outside of the Christian Bible – which chronicles the deaths of the original apostles.

The only apostle whose death is actually recorded in the New Testament Bible, is James, the son of Zebedee, aka James the Greater (Acts 12:1-19). The deaths of all the remaining apostles are only cited through church tradition and apocryphal writings which remain unreliable sources not formally accepted as being sacred (or canonical) by mainstream Christology.

Nevertheless, here is an enumeration of each apostle’s death, according to church tradition and non-Scriptural sources.

SIMON PETER. By trade, Peter was a fisherman. He was a married man whose wife would eventually accompany

him on his missionary journeys (1 Corinthians 9:5). His marriage is well acknowledged by mainstream Christian and Jewish scholars, however, this is an extremely sensitive and incendiary viewpoint with the orthodox Catholic faith, which vehemently challenges that he was a married man, despite what is clearly found in Matthew 8:14 (“When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.”)

Simon Peter, who was appointed leader of his own group of neophyte followers, was eventually martyred in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. He was sentenced to death for his rebellious religious views. The autocracy at the time pronounced Simon’s method of execution to be by crucifixion, a slow, painful, tortuous death.

Peter’s only request was shockingly unconventional, even for his turbulent, unpredictable era. Simon voiced that he was unworthy to be associated with his Messiah’s death of crucifixion and therefore only asked that he be crucified

upside down.

Few civilities were respected by the ancient, barbaric Romans. But courage was a brute attribute which even the Roman legionnaire, centurions and gladiators openly admired.

The Romans obliged and Simon Peter’s inner courage remained unbroken. His last breath was gasped with his head facing, lifeless, in the downward position.

ANDREW. According to non-Biblical ancient sources all the way up to the 15th-century religious historian, Dorman Newman, the Apostle Andrew (the brother of Simon Peter, mentioned above), met his most painful demise while visiting Patras, in Western Greece, in the year 69 A. D. As history retraces the events, Andrew engaged in long heated religious debates with the Roman proconsul, Aegeates. These ongoing debates would prove to be his undoing.

vince the Apostle Andrew to give up Christianity, but to no avail.

Exasperated, the Roman proconsul finally gave Andrew an ultimatum: relinquish his Christian viewpoints or face torture and execution. Andrew was eventually scourged, then placed on an X-shaped wooden cross. He was tied (rather than nailed to a cross) so that he would suffer for a longer period of time before dying. The agony and suffering endured a full two days.

BARTHOLOMEW. Aka Nathanael, was an apostle who ventured into various countries, including India, where he continued translating the Gospel of Matthew. He was eventually challenged for his beliefs and many cultivated a hatred towards his immovable, sustained religious views.

The Apostle Bartholomew’s death is recorded as being at the hands of “impatient idolaters.”

He would, eventually, be brutally beaten, skinned alive, and then beheaded.

THOMAS. The Apostle Thomas was known for his skepticism which would, in time, result in his sobriquet, “The Doubting Thomas,” which survives to this day. This disciple met his death brutally and directly. While preaching in Greece and India he angered religious authorities who martyred him by running him through with a spear. His agonizing death came slowly.

MATTHEW. Aka Levi, was a dishonest publican (tax collector) whom Biblical scholars say was driven by greed. Tax collectors were notoriously corrupt and greatly hated by the Jewish people in ancient times. In this regard, as a collec-

tive people, the Jews had no historical equal. As scholars quickly note, “Of all the nations of the world, the ancient Jews were the most vigorous haters of tax collectors.”

Even the Pharisees viewed tax collectors as enemies to be shunned.

After becoming reformed as an apostle, Matthew would come to write the Gospel which bears his name. Matthew was eventually martyred in Ethiopia. He was, allegedly, stabbed in the back by a swordsman sent by King Hertacus.

King Hertacus was offended by Matthew criticizing the king’s lack of morality.

MATTHIAS is not to be confused with Matthew (aka Levi), mentioned above.

Matthias was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the disciple chosen to replace Judas Iscariot, following Iscariot’s suicide by hanging. Though Matthias was a replacement for Judas Iscariot, Matthias had been in association with the Christian Jesus from the time of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist at the river Jordan. Many scholars believe Matthias was an earlier disciple of John the Baptist. Matthias’ death is placed at circa 80 A. D. when it is said he was stoned to death by the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem for his Christian views, and then beheaded as an enemy of Caesar.

However, according to several historians, Matthias was crucified in the ancient kingdom of Colchis, on the coast of the Black Sea (modern-day Georgia).

His method of execution and place of death remains uncertain to this day.

JAMES. (Son of Zebedee, aka James the Greater). The Biblical account of James’ death is chronicled in Acts 12:119. He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament Bible. As such, he is traditionally

Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it, don't be hard on yourself.

If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

According to Scripture, the Apostle James was “put to death with the sword,” which was accepted vernacular for decapitation (beheading), by order of King Herod Agrippa I in the year 44 A. D. Anything beyond Acts 12:1-19, is considered non-scriptural sources and, thus, relegated to traditional thinking which may, or may not, contain elements of truth. According to non-Biblical writings, James was arrested and sentenced to death. It is alleged that one of James’ false accusers suddenly repented and confessed his wrongdoing, and then converted, on the spot, to Christianity, knowing full-well that he, also, would face the death sentence. According to this apocryphal writing, the Roman executioner beheaded both men, simultaneously.

JAMES (Son of Alphaeus, aka James the Less). The Apostle James has a rather dubious distinction of being, by far, the oldest disciple to be martyred at the ripe old age of 94. The nonagenarian was mercilessly beaten and stoned by persecutors, and finally clubbed to death. In Christian art he is depicted holding a fuller’s club. Other traditional sources say he was crucified in Lower Egypt.

THADDAEUS. (Aka Judas or Jude) Yes, there was more than one Jesus apostle called Judas. However, more commonly referred to as Thaddaeus, or sometimes Lebbaeus, the Apostle Thaddaeus would be crucified at Edessa (the name of cities in both Turkey and Greece) in the year 72 A. D. Some ancient sources give a conflicted version of his death, citing that Thaddaeus was, instead, clubbed, axed, and impaled with

SIMON the Canaanite (aka the Zealot).

Simon preached in Mauritania on the west coast of Africa, eventually making his way to England, where he met his death by crucifixion in the year 74 A. D., just two years after fellow apostle, Thaddaeus.

PHILIP. Philip was the first disciple chosen by the Christian, Jesus. Philip became a missionary for his faith in Asia, then he proselytized in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, where he was scourged with a multiple-thong flagellum whip, known as a “scorpion,” which gives a flesh-tearing ‘bite’ to its victims. After the Apostle Philip endured protracted sufferings from Egyptian scourging, he was thrown into a filth-infested prison.

In the year 54 A. D. his long suffering finally terminated with his eventual crucifixion.

JOHN. The Apostle John was the only member of the original disciples who managed to avoid a most violent death.

But barely.

During the wave of Christian persecution in Rome, he was once thrown into a huge basin of boiling oil, but, survived the ordeal. The Apostle John eventually passed away peacefully at Patmos, the small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. His death is assessed by religious scholars to have occurred approximately in the year 100 A. Largely because he interfaced directly with well-established historical figures such as the 5th prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate (A.D. 26–36) in archaic legal proceedings, as well as with Herod Antipater, ruler of Galilee and Perea. In facing his own accuser, Pontius Pilate, Roman prefect (governor) of Judaea at the time, much of this historical encounter titillates scholarly fancy and peaks intellectual interest, whether one subscribes to Christian tenets or not.

As such, these proceedings constitute the most well-known trial-and-sentencing case in world history, permeating in its recognition every civilized culture and language on Earth, regardless if one is Christian, atheist, or agnostic.

International familiarity on this incident is unquestioned.

The historical Jesus was reluctantly sentenced to death by crucifixion by order of Pontius Pilate. Reluctantly, because as a pagan, Pilate was a superstitious man and was greatly agitated by his wife’s warning concerning his dealings with the Christian Jesus. While Pilate was sitting on the tribunal, a message came to him from his wife, “Have nothing to do with this just man (Yeshua), for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream about him.”

Adding to Pontius Pilate’s reluctance was that his captive, Jesus, had astounded him with replies that seemed more profound and abstract, as opposed to the common verbiage from the unwashed masses of his era. Consequently, Pilate periodically toyed with this mystical figure, curiously asking questions to test

Valley Center Baseball Club to Host Pro Baseball Camp – The Valley Center Baseball Club announces the 3rd Annual Pro Baseball Camp for Sunday and Monday, December 18-19, from 11am to 4pm, at the Valley Center High School Varsity Field.

“This marks the 3rd year that the Valley Center Baseball Club has been able to host

Since Jesus was widely-viewed as an insurgent, Pilate was well aware of his rebellious past brushes with Roman law.

Prior traps had been devised to catch him in wrongdoing; traps that were deviously set by the Pharisees and Herodians, all working complicit with Roman authority. Luke 20:20-26 identifies these elements as “Spies, sent by teachers of the law and the chief priests,” all enemies of the religious iconoclast, Jesus of Nazareth. His enemies had anticipated that, among other things, Jesus would oppose the tax as their purpose “to hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.” For Pontius Pilate, it was no longer a simple cat-and-mouse game he was playing; it was now his own life that was part of the stakes. Tiberias was the ruthless Caesar of Rome; paying taxes to Tiberius was not an option; it was a requirement. Taxes imposed on Judaea

by Tiberias had already led to riots. New Testament scholar, Willard Swartley, writes: “The taxes had provoked the wrath of the country. Revolts had erupted and were suppressed only with some difficulty.” Caesar Augustus Tiberius was now, more than ever, intolerant of those who voiced any further opposition to his taxation. He would expect his governor, Pilate, to seek no compromise with the likes of Jesus who now stood before him. Yet, Pilate’s great reluctance stayed on. The wisdom of this mystical figure was like no other. He recalled his wife’s urgent message of admonishment which further perplexed him.

Pilate knew of the previous, ‘infallible’ traps that had been set to ensnare this irreverent Rabbi Jesus. The Pharisees had previously approached him asking him, in their well-devised plot: “Should the Jews pay taxes to Caesar?” If Jesus were to answer yes, he would condone the enslavement of his people under brutal Roman law. If he answered no, then he would openly breach Emperor Tiberius’ law.

The plot was well-devised.

Ostensibly, to human logic, there was no viable way out of this dilemma. The Pharisees prodded him, till Jesus finally asked his accusers to show him a coin and inquired of them, whose likeness is upon it. They obliged, extending a Roman denarius coin with the likeness of Tiberius upon it with the inscription: “TIBERIVS CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTI FILIVS AVGVSTVS.” (Translation from Latin: Caesar Augustus Tiberius, Son of the Divine Augustus.)

After producing the denarius coin, his enemies continued taunting him for a reply.

The defiant Jesus’ answer would emerge unexpectedly and his accusers would be thunderstruck at its genius. Pointing to the coin’s image, Jesus replied: “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, Render unto the Lord the things that are the Lord’s.” As hateful as they were, they withdrew, as if stunned into submission.

Their mortal wisdom had confirmed to them that their question would be foolproof and yet, somehow, their eyes were suddenly skinned; their ears somehow re-pierced. It is recorded in Matthew 22:22 that “they marveled” and “being satisfied with the answer, they went away.”

So now he stood, before Pilate, on the same matter of taxation by his accusers.

certainly a dangerous rebellious statement of defiance to Emperor Tiberius’ reign.

Prefect Pilate was a pagan first, then a subordinate to Roman rule, second.

Instinctively, he first had to answer to his own private demons of superstition.

This was no ordinary man he was dealing with. The best minds of his enemies could not chart his motives, nor predict his responses but, instead, they were shocked at his unexpected exploits and powers of reasoning. Pilate was aware of all of these antecedents. He had heard of the rebel Jesus’ other exploits.

One memory was a recent one. Into his midst his enemies had dragged a woman named Mary Magdalene for Jesus to reckon with. The Scribes were formidable in their knowledge of the Old Testament Bible; they were men whose profession was to study and interpret Hebrew Law and write commentaries on it. Logically, there appeared no way to escape the dilemma: If this Nazarene frees her, he would openly and clearly break the Law of Moses in front of all the Jewish people assembled before him. If he agrees to have her stoned, the horrifying spectacle and bloodshed that stoning-todeath brings, would forever tarnish Jesus’ preaching of compassion and love. Escondido Gang Reduction Intervention Prevention (EGRIP) Taskforce will hold a Press Conference on Friday, December 16th for the opening of the North County Tattoo Removal Program. This program has been the vision of the EGRIP Task Force, under the leadership of Chief Craig Carter for almost 10 years.

The program which is funded through a CalGRIP grant from the California BSCC in Escondido and Vista will begin offering free tattoo removal services for youth and young adults who have visiable gang tattoos on their face, neck and/or hands that are preventing them from gaining employment and leaving the gang life behind them.

This program has been an identified gap in services; that are currently not free or reduced Gang Tattoo Removal services in North San Diego County. While participants are going through the removal process they will also receive services to help them attain their high school diploma, GED or gain employment.

Supervisor Bill Horn granted the program the money to purchase a laser tattoo removal machine. The program is a partnership between Escondido Police, City of Vista, Escondido Education COMPACT and Neighborhood Healthcare. The program is also supported by the North County Comprehensive Gang Subcommittee which has an extensive membership; including Mayor’s from all North County cities, the District Attorney’s Office, SD County Probation, County of SD, HHSA, San Diego County Sheriff ’s, Oceanside and Escondido Police Departments as well as North County Service Providers.

Escondido’s Joyce Masterson to Retire

Long time administrative aide to the City Manager, Escondido’s Director of Economic Development and Community Relations, Joyce Masterson, is retiring after 29 years of service to Escondido. Her last day in the office will be December 16, 2016.

New Five-Star Hotel Planned for Ponto Beachfront Area

Long a popular surfing site, Ponto Beach may soon see a five-star resort hotel filling a vacant ocean-view property at the southeast corner of Carlsbad Boulevard and Avenida Encinas.

Plans call for a 14-acre project, which in turn, would accommodate 267 rooms, 46 times shares and a three level parking garage with 820 spaces.

Area residents were briefed this week by the developer, Kam Sang Co.

The site, along historic Highway 101 just north of Encinitas and the Batiquitos Lagoon, is considered a gateway for anyone entering Carlsbad from the south.

The nonprofit Escondido Creek Conservancy is seeking $355,000 through a regional water grant to begin designing the restoration project — a first step toward transforming the urban culvert from a polluted canal to a picturesque waterway, officials said.

“We would love to see it be a much more natural channel, and a public amenity for the community..,” said Ann Van Leer, executive director of the conservancy.

The proposal targets state bond money earmarked for projects that involve poorer communities in water management. The creek plan is one of a package of proposals in a $5.5 million grant request by the county’s Integrated Regional Water Management program, administered by the San Diego County Water Authority.

Escondido Creek flows 26 miles from its headwaters in Bear Valley above Lake Wohlford, to the ocean at San Elijo Lagoon. For most of that length it flows in its natural course, but for seven miles through the city of Escondido, it’s contained within concrete embankments and lined with chain-link fence.

I’ve known and worked with Joyce for many, many years. I’ve always been impressed not only with her work ethic but with her skill and expertise in handling major tasks. She, for example, was the person in charge of making sure everything was done just right at the new Public Works Building in Escondido during its construction. She had the blueprints, the plans need to complete the job, and knew who to call to get job orders done or changes. The end result was a mighty fine building. No one was more responsible for seeing to it that that job got done right than Joyce.

ing, then they could claim he lacked wisdom and, therefore, not the Anointed One which many had begun to proclaim.

Scripture recounts how he continued to draw silently on the ground and when they persisted for an answer, he gave one that was neither yes, no, or silence (all of which would have discredited him).

Extraordinary for its day, the Nazarene, instead, answered their question with a question which evaded the plotter’s carefully pre-calculated trap. He gave a disguised answer wrapped in a query: “Who among you is without sin, for the Law also commands that such a person should cast the very first stone?”

Even contemporary secular academicians regard this as a most startling and brilliant dialogue, reminiscent of what scholars today call ‘elenetic methodology’ which was not known in that part of the ancient Jewish world. This is critiqued as unique genius; a subtle yet profound exhibition of unprecedented archaic wisdom.

This same Rabbi Jesus once confused the most brilliant religious leader of his day with his interpretation of Jewish rabbinical truth and Biblical Law by telling the scholarly Nicodemus, “You know the letter of the law, but you do not know the spirit of the law.” The brilliant expert on the Torah, Nicodemus (Pharisee and member of the Jewish Sanhedrin) could not fathom its meaning, nor could he comprehend the terminology of being “reborn.” According to Christian historians, Jesus’ contemporaries could not see the apparent ‘spirit of the law’ in regards to Mary Magdalene, nor the outcome of it which, ostensibly, resulted in her becoming “reborn” as a disciple.

Pilate had already tried without success to send Jesus to Herod, since Jesus was a Galilean and Herod was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod Antipater, nicknamed “Antipas,” was a 1st century ruler of Galilee and Perea. He is often referred to as both “Herod the Tetrarch” and “King Herod.” (Though the Bible refers to him as King Herod, he never held the title of king). It was this same Herod who had previously ordered the death of John the Baptist and had longed to see this mystical Jewish teacher, Jesus, in hopes of observing one of his miracles.

However, the so-called Messiah says little to Herod’s questions. After being brutalized by Herod’s soldiers, he is returned to an even more reluctant Pontius Pilate.

Pilate inquires further, carefully, as if treading on dangerous, uncharted waters, “Where is your kingdom?”

Weakened and bloodied, Jesus’ soft reply is impossible to fathom: “My kingdom is not of this world.” It was from such supernatural pronouncements that some – even family members – thought him to be insane.

For the ancient Jewish people, it was prophesied that their savior would establish a kingdom on Earth. This prophecy was, erroneously, taken literally to mean a physical, military kingdom which would topple the established despotic rulers and, thus, liberate the Jews from their enslavement. It was too abstract to cogitate a spiritual kingdom, an unseen kingdom, which girds the world today, making Christianity the most prevalent and powerful influence and spiritual force in existence.

physical world which, he voiced, are the true underpinnings that cause misunderstandings, wars, bloodshed, and rampant injustice. To established thinking he was, again, thought to be most crazed.

“Then, you are a king?” an intrigued Pilate further inquires. Jesus feebly answers, “So you say that I am a king. For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth.”

As if pursuing a quarry down yet another rabbit hole, the Roman governor took another jab: “Tell me. What is truth?” It was not an idle query. Pilate, in his mortality, and confused fear, truly wished to tap into this (seemingly) other-worldly wisdom. Who was this man, he wondered? Whither did he truly come? He seems not of this world.

Sadly, for Pilate, his question “What is truth?” remained unanswered. To his reply, Jesus answered with silence. To Pilate, it made no sense not to reply. To the paradigmatic Jesus, silence was the perfect answer. Similarly, he had uttered seemingly bizarre statements: “Oh Father, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.” (Matthew 11:25) Throughout his ministry, the Rabbi Jesus often, by design, clothed or openly withheld certain truths for so-called divine reasons. He had been widely-known to suddenly speak in parables when the “unworthy” were approaching or within earshot. His sudden reticence in the presence of Pontius Pilate when asked “What is truth?” seemed – from his past behavior – not a silent response sprung from incompetence, accident, or whim.

Instead, his silence appeared to be by purpose and design, at least by his own idiosyncratic way of thinking. However,

for most, he appeared mentally unbalanced.

Jesus had often resorted to speaking cryptically, on purpose, to mask his true meaning or hide ultimate truth in specific scenarios, which on the surface seemed without reason or rhyme. This behavior often even confused his own disciples. Mystified, they finally asked their Messianic figure, “Master, why do you suddenly speak in parables when others approach?” At other times, there were variations of the same query, “Master, why do you speak to the people in parables?”

Jesus was, by all accounts (secular or Christian), most profound and abstract by any standards, but especially for the crude, rudimentary world of unsophisticated antiquity from which he occupied.

He gave a timeless reply which, even today, seems conflicting and irrational for the purpose of his ministry: “I speak in parables so they won’t understand.” He later illuminates his meaning in his native Aramaic language, “Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God, but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables.”

So, in parables, he chooses to hide some ultimate truth in riddles, symbolic meanings, that are not to be taken literally.

(The word ‘parable’ from the original Greek ‘paroimia’ in Strong’s Concordance essentially means “a fictitious illustration.”)

bolically of men’s faith (the seeds) and the birds (the devourers of faith), and so forth. As many who critique the Bible on fanciful tales and childlike notions, do so – ironically – with wrongful premise. This mysterious religious figure Jesus pronounced: “Therefore, I speak to them in parables: because they seeing, see not.

And hearing, they hear not. Neither do they understand.”

In the final panel of discussion, showcased before a fervent crowd, Pilate avoids an uprising from the crowd by acquiescing that Jesus be crucified. But, to appease his own inner-turmoil and dark fears, he washes his hands before the crowd and shouts in fluent Greek: “I am innocent of this man’s blood! You shall bear the responsibility!” (Notation: Unlike envisioned in the movie “The Passion of the Christ,” Pilate’s dialogue with the historical Jesus was in Koine Greek, not Latin, according to the world’s foremost authorities on the Bible. Koine Greek was the universal language of Jesus’ day, permeating wide sectors of the Roman Empire. This wide-spread linguistic influence was inevitable since the Greeks had conquered Judaea some two centuries prior to Jesus’ reported birth.

The New Testament Bible was even originally first written in Greek. By the 4th century Greek would eventually replace Latin as the official language, especially in the Eastern Roman Empire.

Hebrew and Aramaic were never spoken by the Romans because they considered these to be languages of the slaves (the Jews.)

At the crucifixion, most of his disciples had scattered, leaving the abandoned Rabbi Jesus to die a most ignominious death in his early thirties, just outside the

walls of Jerusalem, at a hilly locale called Golgotha (derived from the Aramaic word “gulgulta” meaning “Place of the skull”). According to the Gospel of Mark (which is the oldest of the Gospels and which scholars believe is the “purest” in that the latter Gospels copied from Mark), the dying Jesus issues his anguished cry from the cross in his original Aramaic tongue: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani” which translates to: “My God, My God, why hath thou forsaken me?”

Even these piercing words were by design, and not – as commonly believed – merely words issued out of pain and feelings of abandonment.

Once more, even to the end, his words would be misunderstood.

In meeting his death, the Christian Jesus, interestingly, was quoting words that had been uttered approximately 1,000years before his own crucifixion. In the Hebrew Torah (the Christian Old Testament Bible), Psalm 22:1 reads: “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?”

Interestingly, this cry from the cross was, ostensibly, a statement of fulfilling Scripture.

As he hung, this so-called Son of Man, was indeed abandoned by all twelve male apostles, save for one. It is noteworthy that (according to the Gospel of Mark) three women, Mary Magdalene, Jesus’ mother, Mary, and Mary’s sister, Salome (Mary of Clopas), stood resolute at the foot of his cross. Other women were said to be in the vicinity, but, not at the foot of his cross.

In everything he did – and whether he

be the true Christ or not -- he seemed to confuse, befuddle, and mystify his contemporaries. He seemed to break with every tradition, Mosaic Law, and managed to offend the religious establishment of his day. However, in his own view, he never broke the Law – he fulfilled it.

One scholar notes that, with his encounter with Pontius Pilate, there was “a chasm between two modalities of understanding. Pilate represented the mundane world, limited, and rooted. The alleged metaphysical Messiah, Jesus, saw the world as only a passing shimmer, rippling across the surface of Reality. Between these two viewpoints there is an unbounded void which can never be bridged by intellect. It can only be bridged by faith.”

This so-called savior did not make the attainment of blind faith easy by any measure. His reasoning seems difficult to accept. He voiced that he wished never to ‘purchase’ one’s faith with indelible proof from the eyes and ears. He wished for faith to ‘be earned’ the hard way, by making that most difficult ‘leap of faith’ without seeing and without the benefit of proof.

If Biblical prophesies hold true, then, many spiritual men in high places (pastors, priests, ministers, rabbis, et al) will eventual falter in their faith, viewing the Scriptures as merely childish fairy tales and whimsical notions, as opposed to seeing them through the prism of parables and the lenses of childlike innocence: “Let the little children come to me and do not stop them, because the kingdom of heaven is made up of people like this.” (Matthew 19:14).

If his prophecies hold fast, then many clergy and men of the cloth, will succumb to a world with no faith. They will continue to preach, but only by vocation

and with masked doubt. In Matthew 15:8-9, the man from Galilee prophesies: “They will draw near unto Me with their mouths, and honor Me with their lips – but their heart is far from me. But in vain (futility) they do worship Me.” For many, science admits no godly interference. It is a most childish notion to do so. Quantum mechanics, Theory of Relativity, and the physical universe are the realistic forces, not fanciful Biblical tales and unsubstantiated fantasies.

Today’s accepted science (cosmology) says there was an unimaginable, cataclysmic explosion from which the universe first expanded faster than the speed of light. It is compelling to note that at this precise cosmological moment, there was a blinding light – at the very moment of inception – when the universe as we know it was born.

This super-cataclysmic light is poignant in that it, perhaps by coincidence, matches what is found in the Jewish Torah (aka the Christian Old Testament Bible), which describes in Genesis 1:3 the beginning of the universe: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

Fanciful physics with a theological spin?

Perhaps. Perhaps not. When all is said and done, I’d give a slight nod in the direction of what the Hebrews first penned (over 4,000 years ago).

Hmm, that’s plenty food for thought. If one maintains an open mind, that is.

The initial funding would cover preliminary designs for a pilot project to improve a quarter-mile stretch of the creek, where it flows through Grape Day Park in downtown Escondido. It would be part of a city project called “PeopletothePark,” which recommends renovating Grape Day Park to make it bigger, build a new library and restore the section of Escondido Creek that flows through the park.

That segment would be a model for further creek restoration, which conservancy officials envision as a linear public park.

A natural creekbed would cool and clean the water that flows through the course, helping to improve habitat downstream for diverse species,.

Turning what is essentially a storm drain into a river park could also jump start urban renewal, officials said. They note that property values are higher near urban parks, and that other cities have embarked on similar restoration efforts.

The cities of Los Angeles and Santa Ana are removing concrete channels along their rivers, the proposal notes, and River Walk at San Antonio Texas generates an estimated $1 billion annually in economic activity for that city, including jobs and tax revenues.

In San Diego County, the city of San Marcos has begun building its Creek District, which aims to build a mix of residential projects, and a small amount of retail and restaurant space, along San Marcos Creek, while preserving and enhancing creek habitat.

Safeguarding our Elections

The first bill I introduced this session deals with voter security. On December 5, during the Legislature’s organizational session, I introduced Assembly Bill 4 (AB 4), the Voter Integrity Protection Act. The Act will verify and protect voter registration data to ensure that changes made online to voter information have actually been made by the voter.

My legislation is in response to incidents this past spring during the primary election cycle in Riverside County portions of my district, when voters felt disenfranchised after abnormalities came to light involving records that had been altered without the voters’ knowledge.

Changes to addresses, party affiliation and preferences regarding mail-only voting had all been made online without voter consent.

My legislative fix is simple. It will bring security procedures

up to date by requiring the County Registrar to notify voters if their registration has been updated online. Voters would be notified of pending changes to their records via either a postcard in the mail to the voter's last known address prior to the requested change or by email or text message, if that is the voter’s preference. This simple step has been the norm in the private sector, including banks, credit agencies, health plans and others for the past several years.

The sanctity of the elections process should be something upon which we can all agree, regardless of party. With the support of Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin, I am looking forward to final passage of AB 4 later this session.

Gift Wrapping Tips for Men

This is the time of year when we think back to the very first Christmas when the Three Wise Men: Gaspar, Balthazar and Herb went to see the baby Jesus; and according to the Book of Matthew, "presented unto Him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

These are simple words, but if we analyze them carefully, we discover an important, yet often overlooked, theological fact. There is no mention of wrapping paper.

If there had been wrapping paper, Matthew would have said so: "And lo, the gifts were inside 600 square cubits of paper. And the paper was festooned with pictures of Frosty the Snowman.

And Joseph was going to throweth it away, but Mary saideth unto him, she saideth, 'Holdeth it! That is nice paper!

Saveth it for next year!' And Joseph did rolleth his eyeballs. And the baby Jesus was more interested in the paper than the frankincense.

But these words do not appear in the Bible, which means that the very first Christmas gifts were NOT wrapped.

This is because the people giving those gifts had two important characteristics: 1. They were wise.

2. They were men.

Men are not big gift wrappers. Men do not understand the point of putting paper on a gift just so somebody else can tear it off. This is not just my opinion; this is a scientific fact based on a statistical survey of two guys I know.

One is Rob, who said the only time he ever wraps a gift is "if it's such a poor gift that I don't want to be there when the person opens it."

The other is Gene, who told me he does wrap gifts, but as a matter of principle never takes more than 15 seconds per gift.

"No one ever had to wonder which presents daddy wrapped at Christmas," Gene said.

"They were the ones that looked like enormous spitballs."

I also wrap gifts, but because of some defect in my motor skills, I can never completely wrap them. I can take a gift the size of a deck of cards and put it the exact center of a piece of wrapping paper the size of a regulation volleyball court, but when I am done folding and taping, you can still see a sector of the gift peeking out. (Sometimes I camouflage this sector with a marking pen.)

If I had been an ancient Egyptian in the field of mummies, the lower half of the Pharaoh's body would be covered only by Scotch tape.

On the other hand, if you give my wife a 12-inch square of wrapping paper, she can wrap a C-130 cargo plane. My wife, like many women, actually likes wrapping things.

If she gives you a gift that requires batteries, she wraps the batteries separately, which to me is very close to being a symptom of mental illness.

If it were possible, my wife would wrap each individual volt.

My point is that gift-wrapping is one of those skills like having babies that come more naturally to women than to men. That is why today I am presenting: GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS FOR MEN:

John Jay: America’s 1st All-Around Citizen

John Jay was from a wealthy family of merchants, who became an attorney, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, a signatory on the Treaty of Paris, in which England recognized American independence. He also was a governor, a slaveholder, as well as the nation’s first Chief Justice of the United States.

* Whenever possible, buy gifts that are already wrapped. If, when the recipient opens the gift, neither one of you recognizes it, you can claim that it's myrrh. * The editors of Woman's Day magazine recently ran an item on how to make your own wrapping paper by printing a design on it with an apple sliced in half horizontally and dipped in a mixture of food coloring and liquid starch. They must be smoking crack.

* If you're giving a hard-to-wrap gift, skip the wrapping paper! Just put it inside a bag and stick one of those little adhesive bows on it. This creates a festive visual effect that is sure to delight the lucky recipient on Christmas morning: YOUR WIFE: Why is there a Hefty trash bag under the tree?

YOU: It's a gift! See? It has a bow!

YOUR WIFE (peering into the trash bag): It's a leaf blower.

YOU: Gas-powered! Five horsepower!

YOUR WIFE: I want a divorce.

YOU: I also got you some myrrh.

In conclusion, remember that the important thing is not what you give or how you wrap it. The important thing, during this very special time of year it to take many naps.

The name “John Jay” was an important one in the forming of the nation, but to the casual reader of history one might mistakenly assess Jay was somewhat boring. He was too busy during his lifetime to ever have been boring.

Jay was born Dec. 12, 1745, into a wealthy family of merchants and government officials in New York City. He became a lawyer and joined the New York Committee of Correspondence and organized opposition to British rule. He joined a conservative political faction that, fearing mob rule, sought to protect property rights and maintain the rule of law while resisting British violations of human rights.

Jay served as the President of the Continental Congress (1778-79), an honorary position with little power.

During and after the American Revolution, Jay was Ambassador to Spain, a negotiator of the Treaty of Paris by which Great Britain recognized American independence, and served Secretary of Foreign Affairs, helping to fashion U.S. foreign policy. Jay, a proponent of strong, centralized government, worked to ratify the U.S. Constitution in New York in 1788, by writing five of “The Federalist Papers” but, not using his name. Jay assisted the Papers’ main authors, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison.

As a leader of the new Federalist

Party, Jay was the Governor of the State of New York (1795–1801), where he became the state's leading opponent of slavery, even though he was a slaveholder himself. His first two attempts to end slavery in New York in 1777 and 1785 failed, but a third in 1799 succeeded. The 1799 Act, a gradual emancipation Jay signed into law, eventually granted all slaves in New York their freedom before his death in 1829.

After the establishment of the U.S. government, Jay became the first Chief Justice of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1795.

Washington officially nominated him on Sept. 24, 1789, the same day the President signed the Judiciary Act of 1789 (which created the position of Chief Justice) into law.

Jay was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Sept. 26, 1789, and Washington signed and sealed Jay's commission the same day.

Jay swore his oath of office on Oct. 19, 1789. Washington created the first court by nominating John Rutledge, William Cushing, Robert Harrison, James Wilson, and John Blair as Associate Judges. Harrison declined the appointment, however, and Washington appointed James Iredell to fill the final seat on the Court. Jay would later serve with Thomas Johnson, who took Rutledge's seat, and William Paterson, who took Johnson's seat.

The Court's business through its first three years primarily involved the establishment of rules and procedure; reading of commissions and admission of attorneys to the bar; and the Justices' duties in "riding circuit," or presiding over cases in the circuit courts of the various federal judicial districts.

Chief Justice Jay established an early precedent for the Court's independence in 1790, when Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton wrote, requesting the Court's endorsement of legislation that would have the Federal government assuming the debts of all the states.

Jay replied that the Court's business was restricted to ruling on the constitutionality of cases being tried before it and refused to allow it to take a position either for or against the legislation.

On the night of May 14, 1829, Jay was stricken with palsy, probably caused by a stroke. He lived for three days, dying in Bedford, N.Y., on May 17. Jay had chosen to be buried in Rye, where he lived as a boy. In 1807, he had transferred the remains of his wife Sarah Livingston and those of his colonial ancestors from the family vault in the Bowery in Manhattan to Rye, establishing a private cemetery.

Today, the Jay Cemetery is an integral part of the Boston Post Road Historic District, adjacent to the historic Jay Estate. The Cemetery is maintained by the Jay descendants and closed to the public. It is the oldest active cemetery associated with a figure from the American Revolution.

Christmas Eating Tips

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can.

And quickly. It's rare. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me.

Have two. It's later than you think.

It's Christmas!

3 . If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone.

Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to

a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do.

This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge.

Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention.

They're like a beautiful pair of shoes.

If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin.

Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin.

Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert?

Labor Day? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake?

Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost.. I mean, have some standards.

The site of the “sermon on the mount” was moving. As we sat and did devotionals there, it was easy to imagine listening to Jesus speak the beatitudes.

My wife and I recently returned from Israel. I have entitled it the “Land of Perspective.” It’s an amazing experience to walk where Jesus walked. So many things stood out.

Let me mention a few.

We woke up the first morning to the “Sea of Galilee.” I’d read about it many times, but to see it was breathtaking.

Knowing Jesus sailed there. We took a ride on the Sea and could truly feel His presence.

We ventured to Nazareth, where Jesus was from. There we visited a village that represented life as it was in His day. The beauty and simplicity stood out. The characters we met there were genuine and authentic.

Later we arrived in Jerusalem.

Words can’t express what we felt as we laid eyes on the Holy City.

Our eyes filled with tears and we felt incredible joy. The lyrics to the famous song came to mind:

"Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest.

Hosanna to your King!"

The experiences we had there are far too many to tell. We prayed at the Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall). One lady we met asked my wife to pray for her and reminded her of how difficult it was there.

A visit to the garden tomb area where Jesus died and was resurrected was accompanied by a sign that said “Jesus Christ, declared by power to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead.”

The trip made us want to read our Bibles more and that’s a good thing. It confirmed our faith. We know that these things were written that we might believe and have eternal life. Anyone who has not been to the Holy Land should consider it.

Miracle on 34th Street

Why not take a break from the hustle and of bustle h o l i d a y shopping and enjoy a classic theatrical favorite staged in a unique setting? The Brooks Theatre presents “Miracle on 34th Street; A Live Radio Show” December 16th through 18th.

This production is based on the Lux Radio Theatre Broadcast that aired on December 22, 1948 in a national CBS Broadcast. When that tactic didn’t get the results they wanted they began to “hassle” Win7 users by bombarding them with updates and then slowing the update servers to a crawl.

When that didn’t work, last month they simply started bundling the Win 10 “snoopware” into the Win7 updates... This action prompted many professionals in the PC service industry to recommend that users turn of the “Automatic Update” feature on their PC. Today’s Win7 “updates” have little to do with your security and a lot to do with Microsoft’s.

What do we recommend? There is no single answer. Windows 10 is basically the same as Windows 7.

The changes are minor and easily accommodated. The “snoop” features aside, Win10 is not a bad OS. If the “snoop” features and the fact that Microsoft controls your PC don’t bother you and your favorite applications are compatible, then a new Win10 PC will work for you.

As far as upgrading to Win 10 we recommend against it. An upgrade to Win10 gives you nothing and can cause major headaches. We will continue to sell new notebook and desktop PCs with Win7 or 10, your choice.
