g. The city has refused to pay Maher the 2nd payment of $75,000 in July, when due; there are reports of a letter, not on city letterhead, but allegedly crafted by city staff, which awaits Maher’s signature, agreeing to not run for office or comment on political activities and/or city business, that only when Maher signs this will the $75,000 be released to him. The city has stated the $75,000 is being withheld because of a breach in the severance agreement. What was the breach? Ed Gallo. I don’t know anything about that. This is the first I’ve heard of it.

Olga Diaz: I have heard the same thing but don’t know if it’s true or not. I know people who say they have read it. It was written as though Jim had written it. Jim is not a liar. Jim and I may have disagreed at times on policy issues but I learned early on that he is not a liar.

Jim Maher was contacted. He confirmed that upon advice of legal counsel he cannot release it at this time. If and when the DA contactds him, it will likley

Sam Abed: Declined to comment other than to say that Olga Diaz had called the DA. He then said, this was something he “had heard.” (Olga confirms she had called the DA for clarification on an issue).

h. Do you have any concerns about the possible violations of the Election Code Section 18205? Ed Gallo: “I’m not aware of the Section.”

Olga Diaz: I’m very familiar with the Section and, yes, I’m very concerned about it because, as you know, several of the areas, extortion, conspiracy, bribery, are felonies. That means prison time. This could be big. That’s why we need someone like the DA to tell us if there were violations or not.

i. Why was the settlement agreement not voted on by the City Council?

Ed Gallo: This was an issue with an employee with City Manager, who controls.

Olga Diaz: I was not consulted on it.

The removal of the Cherokee Nation from their native lands in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama was one of the saddest episodes in American history.

President Andrew Jackson gets much of the blame, but he is only the historical face on this Indian removal from the South to the Middle Southwest. In the late 1830s, Congress passed the "Indian Removal Act." The Cherokees, which notably had the only written language and considered by the white man to be the most civilized among the Native Americans, fought the

Blessing of the Animals at Unity of Carlsbad Church – On Sunday, October 6, churches around the world – including Unity of Carlsbad – will celebrate something that St. Francis of Assisi started almost 800 years ago – blessing our animals. Unity of Carlsbad meets in the Activity Room at the Carlsbad Senior Citizen’s Center, 799 Pine Street, Carlsbad, every Sunday, 10am11:30am. For more info, contact Rev. constitutionality of the legislation, taking their case all the way to the Supreme Court. The effort failed, and in 1838, the Federal government began removing the Cherokees to the "Indian Territory" in what is today Oklahoma.

President Jackson ordered Gen. Winfield Scott to lead 7,000 troops, removing the Indians from their native lands. The Cherokees were promised money, livestock, and various provisions and tools. Some of the Indians refused to go and took off to hide in the mountains of North Carolina, the swamps of Georgia, and other places too inhospitable for white men. Others were allowed to stay by taking U.S. citizenship, but in the winter of 1838-39, 15,000 Cherokees were marched some 1,000 miles through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas into the forbidding Indian Territory. Many of the Cherokees walked the entire distance without footwear and skimpy clothing.
