Those of us who fancy ourselves writers need to pause now and then and pick up and read a story or two by the Master, Mark Twain. It makes one rather humble right smartly.
Samuel Clemens, more commonly known by his pen name of Mark Twain, had it all. This often curmudgeonly man was a storyteller. He could pull a laugh out of you one minute and rip a tear or two out of your eyes the next. He had a knack of capturing the local dialect, of turning a phrase just so, of writing descriptive pieces that transported you right into the middle of wherever it was he wanted you to be at the time. Much of what he had to say has endured down through the years and has become part of our everyday language. Other comments he’s made are less well known but still tickle the funny bone. One such phrase that brought a chuckle from me: “Doctor Meredith moved to Hannibal and was our family physician there and saved my life several times. Still, he was a good man and meant well.”
Most of us have read “Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Still others have read “Roughing It,” “Innocents Abroad,” and a number of other short stories of Twain’s. Those of us who haven’t are missing a real reading treat. The man is as alive, funny, brilliant, witty and wise as he was when he was tickling America a hundred years ago. Those of us who scribble words to put bread on the table would do well to read him again and again and yet again, to get a feel for the power of words written down in just the right order, just the right manner, and with the application of dialect, accents, wisdom and folly. Chances are we still wouldn’t get it just quite right. Mark Twain did. He endures through today. I’ve culled some of his more well known phrases that I suspect will amuse you a bit. This brilliant man was born and resided in Missouri during his impressionable teens, in the little riverbank town of Hannibal. He was a journeyman printer for eight years, was a Mississippi River pilot for four, a prospector in Nevada, a newspaper reporter in Virginia City, Nevada, and then broke upon the American literary scene with a piece called, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The Paper - 760.747.7119

For the next forty five years he penned books, stories, travelogues and observations. He was in huge demand as a lecturer. He was a master story teller and writer. Seldom did he write more than a paragraph without a beautiful and humorous anecdote, phrase, or tall tale. And so, we present you with a gift. A small collection of the brilliant sayings, comments and observations of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. You and I know him better as ‘Mark Twain.’

The world suffered a great loss in 1910. Mark Twain died. His facile pen and brilliant mind faded into darkness, only his works remain. His love of using dialect, of doing a caricature of the rich and famous, as well as the more mundane, his use of dialogue . . . are all still there for the taking. Check any library, book store, or garage sale and seek out the works of Mark Twain. You’re in for a treat.
Speaking of treats, researching Mark Twain is one of the sweetest treats. So often, researching an individual can be the tedious part of writing. Not so when researching Mark Twain. One soon finds oneself aboard a magic carpet, totally absorbed in reading his material, following the workings of his fertile mind, and usually laughing at some premise he has developed, some memory he has recalled, some story, real or imagined, that he has put to paper. I recall going to the Internet and stumbling across his autobiography. Deciding to ‘glance through’ bits and pieces of his autobiography I soon found that two hours had passed. The Old Master had done it to me again. He had mesmerized me and it was all I could do to tear myself away and try to focus on the story we were doing about him. . . not the story he was telling. I guess I'm speaking to those who may not have spent that much time with Twain or Melville. You can easily download any of Melville's short novels from the Internet. I suppose MOBY DICK was required reading for most of us, but, if not, please read it. There is nearly nothing closer to perfection, in my opinion.
Still, if you’re looking for a model, you can’t do much better than Mr. Clemens.
I wish both of those guys were writing novels, films, and television shows today. But Clemens would probably be into video games and Melville would still be found dead in a gutter one day. Being in the same world with them at the same time. That would be swell. When I mentioned this week’s cover story was on Mark Twain, a number of the professional writers on a Writer’s Conference to which I belong began to “ooh,” and “ah,” like giddy teenagers. They, like me, began to recall many pleasant hours of having read this man. I can think of no better advice to aspiring writers than to study Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Learn his style, learn his use of imagery, of dialect, of story telling. You may try to imitate him, and that’s fine. You’re imitating the best. But you will soon learn that no one, absolutely no one, can imitate Twain. They can try, but they will fall short. No writer I know has the fertile mind, the vivid imagination, the command of the language, the ear for dialogue and dialect, the skill of storytelling.

On Saturday, October 8 at about 1:57 AM officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the area of 1161 E. Valley Parkway regarding a serious injury collision. Escondido Fire paramedics were flagged down moments after the collision and were already on scene. Officers arrived and determined a single vehicle had struck a pedestrian on Ash just south of Valley Parkway. Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene it appears a 24 year old male was driving south on Ash in a green 1996 Volkswagen Golf. His vehicle struck a pedestrian in the roadway and came to rest on top of the person. It appears the individual was in a prone position in the roadway prior to the collision. Fire personnel used special equipment to lift the vehicle off of the pedestrian although the person died at the scene. Life saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful. The male driver of the Golf was not injured and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Mike Nelson of the Traffic Division. We are seeking the public’s help with anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any additional information about the collision. The man suspected of attacking a gas station clerk in San Marcos has been arrested in Encinitas. Sheriff's Deputies recognized the suspect from surveillance

The attack happened just after 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28th at the Chevron located in the 1200 block of W. San Marcos Boulevard. In the surveillance video, you can see the suspect walk into the store and immediately punch the clerk several times, knocking him to the ground. The clerk hit his head on the floor and was knocked unconscious. The suspect then kicked the clerk on the side of the head and was last seen getting into the passenger’s side of a light-colored sedan. The driver of the sedan was a woman who had previously entered the gas station to purchase beer. The clerk was taken to a local hospital. He suffered bruising/swelling to his face, a cut on the back of his head that required staples and bleeding inside his skull. Beautiful Lake Complex Vision for San Marcos Fades Away
It was such a beautiful plan . . . acquire an old reservoir for $1 a year for 50 years and then build a park around it on the 45 acre property. Visionaries saw boat rentals, an amphitheater, picnic tables, a bucolic scene. The city of San Marcos put its money behind it, investing more than $2.9 million in the project. Of that figure $1.9 million was used to buy 10 acres of land which would have provided access to the site. Another $850,000 was set aside for design work on the park. How could such a beautiful plan not come to fruition? The California legislature, for one, threw a monkey wrench into the plans when they banned rede-

Add to this the terrible drought California has suffered and, day by day, week by week, observers saw the manmade lake shrink to half its size. There is an alternate plan in the works which just might give some return on the money and time invested. A proposal has come forward for a shaded picnic area and parking lot . . . and maybe, just maybe, a small fishing dock.
The city has invested another $200,000 for redesign of the project; add another $1 million for construction. The design should be done by next summer. The overlook should open in 2018.
City Manger Jack Griffin is fully supportive of the project and the community has shown its approval as well. The San Marcos City Council will hear the recommendations, study the issues surrounding the proposals, the amount of money invested to date, plus the new commitment of funding and then make a collective decision.

Being a man of letters and one who loves intelligent and creative writing, reading everything from Readers Digest, Architectural Digest, National Geographic, Smithsonian, New Yorker, and various other periodicals, I have to say I'm now an avid reader of ... The Paper, in general, and more specifically, a fan of one Freidrich Gomez, the interesting and oh so brilliant feature journalist of this fine local paper. I like that Mr. Gomez has the talent and capacity to boldly take on a wide variety of topics, from Elvis to the Bible.
I admire and respect his direct, incisive, intrepid and well researched style. In a word, he's 'real.' I'd also say he's 'old school,' and 'straight up,' and doesn't seem to care at all about political correctness (PC), which is fine with me and most other intelligent individuals, because PC is a vir-

minutes. They gave him an IV that got some sugar into his body and he awakened, barely. They then transported him to Palomar Medical Center where he was given the best of care by an outstanding team of medical personnel. In particular, I would like to thank Dr. Asshin Nahavandi (he’s from Persia) who kept me and our family fully briefed. His neurologists, Drs. Choudy and Dr. Paduga, who ensured every test was run to make sure Scott was accurately diagnosed, and the fantastic nursing staff on the 5th floor. The bad news is that Scott did suffer some permanent brain damage due to having been in a coma for, apparently, several hours before being discovered. Some of the other brain damage may well be reversible, but it will take time. He has been transferred to a skilled nursing facility in Escondido and we are hopeful that we will get him back with much of his brain function restored. This has been a very difficult week for me, personally. A serious crisis like this often hits you unprepared and we often don’t know exactly what to do. We did follow the prescribed emergency actions but without the prompt response from the Escondido Fire Department and its EMT’s . . . without the superb medical attention of the doctors and nursing staff . . . the outcome may well have been much more severe.

There’s Trouble brewing at Vallecitos Water District: Did you know that while you and I were focused on other matters, these two Directors led the charge to increase water and sewer rates! Yes, it is true but the worst part is they aren't done with increasing rates unless they're in their seats in November! That's why I am writing to urge you to vote for other candidates in this race.

Candidate Withdraws
I made the decision to run for the office of Escondido City Treasurer to serve my community. However, since I filed my campaign papers personal issues and pending surgeries will limit my ability to serve.
Well, here the real story. Yes, there was a rate increase, partially, for increased water costs. By not dealing with the real increase, there is a real possibility of a short fall in revenues, estimated at $4 million dollars! Dollars needed to purchase water deliveries. This failure by their lack of leadership is misrepresenting us ratepayers.
I have met another of the candidates running for office - Ryan Clark whom, in my opinion, would make an outstanding Treasurer. He would accomplish every goal that is important to me.
It's Board Mismangement.
He and I share a particularly important value - we are both veterans who have served our country in a foreign war.
So why do it? It was politically expedient and convenient for campaign fundraising with developer friends and cronies. Follow their campaign donations by developer sponsored PAC's, if you need verification. They were supported by Directors, except Director Evans who stayed honest in her decision. These actions that continue to favor over ratepayers is misrepresentation!
I have decided to withdraw from the campaign and throw all my support to Ryan Clark. My name will still appear on the ballot but any person who might have voted for me should cast his or her vote for Ryan. Escondido will be a better City if he is elected. John W. Trudell Escondido, CA.

Deerfield is a far-left political activist who led the Escondido ‘movement’ to repeal the CA charter schools act. I believe that her partisanship and liberal policies have no place on our school boards. About Elections and Our Endorsements
As we mentioned several weeks ago when we posted our endorsements for the upcoming elections, we, like you, reserve the right to change our vote, or endorsement, based on new information that comes to light.
Since posting that statement several items of information have developed that have caused us to change our endorsements.
For the Palomar Community College Governing Board we now endorse the following: Rose Marie Dishman, Tim Fillinger and Nancy Ann Hensch
We have withdrawn our endorsement of Nina Deerfield for a number of reasons, not the least of which is her strong opposition to Charter Schools. The Paper is, and has been, a strong supporter of Charter Schools and Ms. Deerfield’s aggressive campaign against them is sufficient cause to withdraw our support. Instead, we support Tim Fillinger, in her place. He is an engineer, has good, solid credentials, and deserves to be elected. We also initially endorsed Gary M. Ernst for Oceanside City Treasurer. Unfortunately, Mr. Ernst has passed away. His name, however, will be on the ballot. We mistakenly assumed that the other candidate, Nadine Scott, an attor-

In fact, if Mr. Ernst is elected by the voters then the Oceanside City Council would appoint his replacement. We have nothing against Ms. Scott. We just don’t feel qualified to endorse her. We have endorsed Ryan Clark for this office and continue to do so.
We pointed out, however, that our research narrowed our selection down to two candidates, Mr. Clark and Doug Schultz. Both, in our judgment, are outstanding individuals and we would not be disappointed if either candidate were to win. We cast our vote for the endorsement of Mr. Clark primarily based on two key considerations. One, he has committed to making the job a full time one; that he will resign his position the day he is elcted to the position. Our position all along has been that the salary is outrageous for what is essentially a part time job. Mr. Schultz was not prepared to make that commitment.

The other consideration we had that tipped the scales in Mr. Clark’s favor is the fact that he is a combat veteran and paid a pretty hefty price serving our nation while ivolved with the Iraq and Afghhanistan dust-up.
In fact, he had risen in the enlisted ranks to a leadership position when he was blown up by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). From this combat injury he ultimately lost his left leg and walks today with a prosthesis. He won’t talk about that. I just did.

This session I authored a bill to establish a San Diego pilot program funded through the Victim’s Crime Fund to provide assistance to elder and dependent victims of financial crimes. My bill was supported by the California Commission on Aging and the California Elder Justice Coalition. It can be scary and lonely to try to navigate government agencies alone without an advocate or assistance. My office can also help to liaison on issues affecting seniors.
The California Commission on Aging serves as one of the principal advocates for older individuals in California, and assists with legislation and regulations involving programs and services for the elderly. They have recently been looking at the issue of older women in poverty through the lenses of retirement options, elder justice, food insecurity and health access. Issues affecting seniors

The Presidential Election
We have endorsed Donald Trump and will stick with that endorsement, regardless of the scandalous behavior that came out . . . but we won’t be terribly proud . . .even if he wins. We are endorsing what we feel is the lesser of two evils.
Hillary Clinton scares the hell out of us. We don’t trust her, we think she should be tried on criminal charges and should be in a penitentiary. The Donald is not a whole lot better but we’ll stick with him.
We wish we had a GOP candidate like former Defense Secretary Bob Gates, or former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, or former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
I would have zero problem endorsing any one of them and would feel much more secure as a citizen than if either of the present candidates get in. But, it is what it is.

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas.
I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me. 'Hello Barry, how are you today?'
'H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good' 'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?' 'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.'
'Good. Anything I can help you with?' 'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.'
'Would you like to take some home?' asked Mr. Miller. 'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.'
'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas? 'All I got's my prize marble here.'
'Is that right? Let me see it', said Miller. 'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'
'I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked. 'Not zackley but almost.'
knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.
Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. 'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.
They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt.'
'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho ...' With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.
I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.
Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and
The Bland Ambition of Being Vice President
Who would want a job that has little significance with all the embodiment of “second fiddle?” Some would say being the U.S. Vice President is a sort of political punishment. As former VP John Nance Garner (under FDR) was quoted as saying, “Being vice president isn’t worth a buck of warm spit.”
Since George Washington became our first President, there have been 12 Veeps who have made it to the Oval Office. Aaron Burr was charged with murder and treason; Hannibal Hamlin sat out the Civil War by hiding in a U.S. Coast Guard cutter off the Maine coast; Theodore Roosevelt attended law school while he was Veep for fear he otherwise wouldn’t have enough to do.
Richard Nixon became the first politician to receive a review in the entertainment magazine, Variety, for his famous “Checkers” speech on TV. Dan Guayle’s wife dismissed hints of scandal about a golf outing hat included young women by saying, “Anyone who knows Dan knows he would rather play golf than have sex any day.” Steve Tally, author of Bland Ambition, (Harcourt-Brace, 1992) wrote in his opening remarks, “The vice presidency, it seems, is not survival of the fittest, but elevation of the mediocre.”

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts ... all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket.
'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble'. Mr. Miller told the boy.
With a smile she said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

In recent years, beginning with the presidential campaigns of the 80s, the vice presidential nominee has been looked upon as the “attack dog.” They would be the bad guy, leaving the top of the ticket to be the good guy, so to speak. That doesn’t seem to be the case for this year’s campaign. In reality, most think of the vice presidency as not survival of the fittest, but elevation of the mediocre.
America’s first vice president, John Adams, was a founding father and Washington’s Veep. He probably was most unhappy in the position among all the others holding the second chair. Adams quickly realized there was literally nothing to do except preside over the Senate, which he found an utter bore. Washington, like many other presidents, did not include Adams in any major decisions. If ever there was a scoundrel occupying the Veep’s job it had to have been Aaron Burr, the third man to hold the position. Adams was Washington’s number 2; Thomas Jefferson was Adams. Burr was defeated for the presidency by Jefferson by one vote. Burr
had a running feud with Alexander Hamilton, himself a rather controversial character. When rumors began circulating (started by Hamilton) that Burr may have committed incest with his daughter, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel. The secretary of the treasury was mortally wounded by the vice president, and he was charged with murder in New York City where Hamilton died. Years later, while still the Veep, Burr was charged with treason for trying to create a new country involving the original Spanish-held lands.
Some 14 of the Veeps have become presidents. They are: Adams, Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Filmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Gerald Ford, and George Herbert Walker Bush. The most overlooked and underestimated man to hold the Veep’s office was Truman. When FDR died April 12, 1945, Truman had to step into the biggest shoes in modern history. World War II hadn’t finished and the decision of whether or not to use the atomic bomb was yet to be made. Truman didn’t know about the bomb, in fact, he hadn’t been briefed on anything of importance concerning the war. To point out the little regard FDR had for his Veep, he had only one meeting with Truman before his death. Truman was completely in the dark. For a man who had only a high school education, Truman turned out to be one of our best presidents, making some of the most important decisions of the 20th century – namely to use the a-bomb on Japan, thus ending the war and probably saving more than a million lives.

Should children witness childbirth? Good question. Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-yr old girl to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby...
Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry.
The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.
Kathleen quickly responded, 'He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place.....smack his ass again!'

Children's Book Drive in support of “Make a Difference Day,” a national day of community service on October 22nd. New or gently used books for children ages 5-15 are being collected through the month of October at the Assistance League Thrift Shop, 2068 E. Valley Parkway, Major Market at 1855 S. Centre City Parkway, and US Bank branches in Escondido. These books will go to the local children in transitional housing through Interfaith Community Services and YMCA after school programs. This book drive is being replicated across the country at over 100 Assistance League chapters. Congressman Issa represents the people of California’s 49th Congressional District, a seat he has held since 2001. As a senior in high school, Issa enlisted in the United States Army, where he received an ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in business. Where Did the Universe Come From?
Many people wonder how the universe got here. Was it created by God, or has it always been around? Consider this: In 1915, Einstein proved the direct relationship between space and time. His Theory of General Relativity requires that the universe must be constantly expanding. The universe cannot have existed since infinity past or it would be infinite in size. It must have had a beginning. Decisive proof of our finite beginning came from two Bell Lab scientists named Penzias and Wilson. They spent a year trying to quiet the background noise they were hearing coming from the huge Bell antenna set up in Holmdel, New Jersey. The
Princeton’s lead researcher, Robert Dicke, had been working to find a phenomenon called “cosmic background radiation.” 20 years earlier, a Russian scientist named George Gamow had predicted that if we were able to listen far enough into space, we should be able to hear the “cosmic background radiation” left over from the Big Bang.
Gamow hypothesized that if the universe had been forged in a massive cosmic explosion, the first photons would be detectable as microwaves. The Russian even suggested that these microwaves could be picked up by the big Bell Labs antenna in Holmdel. Neither Penzias and Wilson nor the Princeton research team had read Gamow’s paper. But Dr. Dicke knew immediately what the Bell Lab workers had found. “Well boys, we’ve just been scooped,” he remarked after he hung up the phone. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” We’re exploring questions like these at New Song Church these days. Come on over!

Highway 78 has the worst afternoon commute in the county. The 78 and I5 freeway interchange has a traffic light. Hours are spent idling in north county traffic and it will only get worse.
The current funding plan goes out at least 15 years before dollars come to even start north county transportation projects. Measure A accelerates dollars to fix and finish the 78 within the next 15 years. Measure A specifically identifies the 78 as an early action project. The cost? A half cent sales tax increase, all of which stays in San Diego County,
not Sacramento, transportation projects.

The 78 is north county’s economic spine for moving goods, workers, students, seniors, and military personnel. To ensure north county’s economic future we must make an investment in ourselves. I am a teen writing to you today about the “Daily Chuckles” section of The Paper. My family and I have been enjoying this paper for two years now. The jokes started out nice but slowly went down hill.
I enjoy the clean jokes as much as the next guy but also strongly dislike the inappropriate jokes. I do not wish for my younger sisters to read the majority of these jokes. This is a hometown paper and should be intended for the whole family. I am not asking for you to print only “kid friendly” jokes, as I also understand it is not necessarily a family paper, however, it is a local hometown paper that is easily accessable in many family friendly local businesses. I am simply asking that you take the inappropriate jokes down a notch. Unless or until these jokes improve, I will not read much of this particular section.
On the other hand, I very much enjoy the stories written by Friedrich Gomez as well as the weekly memo from Councilmember Olga Diaz, along with the overall paper. By the time PCs (personal computers) came along, computers had been common in business environments for twenty years. Processing power and data storage were expensive so computing and data storage was done in a central location, the “computer room.” The CPU (central processing unit) was surrounded by “mass storage” devices (discs, tapes etc), and high speed printers. The “computer Room” was a climate controlled place with a “raised floor” to allow frequent access to connecting cables. The “computer room” was connected by wire to the input devices (dumb terminals) throughout the business. Employees input data through these terminals, the CPU crunched the data and created reports, the data was kept in “mass

By the early 1980s technology had reduced the cost of data processing, storage and displays to the point where PC (personal computers) became affordable. The “computer room” disappeared as large business’ found “distributed processing” (networked PCs) more cost effective than “central processing.” Stand alone-PCs also became affordable for small business and home users. Local processing was in and the era of “central processing” and the “dumb terminal” was history. As the Internet came to dominate PC usage patterns and technology continued to improve access speeds, on-line computing power and applications, we went into reverse. Our smart phones and tablets aren’t really smart, they’re simply “dumb terminals” that access a “central processor,” the Internet. To the extent that our desktop and notebook PCs spend most of their time on the WWW they too are simply “dumb terminals.” For forty years PCs have been getting ever faster with ever more memory and bigger hard drives. Now users are finding that local speed, memory and storage aren’t important any more, everything they need is on the Internet. Since 1980 Microsoft, with 90% and Apple with the rest, has dominated PC OS (operating systems).
