Cuban Missile Crisis Cont. from Page 3

Grechko explains his reasons to Deputy Garbuz: “We know that Defense Minister Malinovsky had been asked more than once to have pre-firing radar ‘lock’ onto a target for preliminary launch and the minister has said ‘no’ on multiple occasions! “And it’s now impossible to get in touch with Moscow in such a short time!” After a short reflection, the voice transcript reveals Grechko announcing in Russian: “Well, let’s take responsibility ourselves!” Deputy Commander Garbuz of Soviet Forces in Cuba, agrees.

SOVIET RADAR: (Both generals agree, stating out loud their voice command to subordinates): “Destroy Target Number 33.” Instantly, two Soviet SA-2 surfaceto-air-missiles (SAMS) launch into the air near the eastern city of Banes. One explodes near the U-2.

Shrapnel pierces the cockpit, along with Anderson’s pressurized flight suit and helmet, causing both to decompress at high altitude, most likely killing him instantly. The U-2 plunged 15 vertical miles from the skies.

Third -- because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.

Fourth -- No obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene. Fifth -- We will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, selfesteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that

Target Number 33 was destroyed.

U. S. war with the Soviet Union now appears imminent.

The shocking news stuns President Kennedy in his Oval Office. His military advisors want immediate retaliation!

Kennedy correctly assumes that the aerial kill was not authorized by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Despite the urgings from his military advisors, he worries that retaliatory airstrikes would inevitably result in all-out nuclear war.

Kennedy says on record: “It isn’t the first step that concerns me. But its both sides escalating to the fourth or fifth step . . . and then . . . we don’t go to the sixth step . . . because there is no one around to do so.” As Kennedy tells his advisers this, both of the president’s hands form rigid fists which he brings up to shield his face. AMERICAN U-2 PILOT MAJOR RUDOLF ANDERSON, JR. DID NOT DIE IN VAIN. Anderson’s earlier U-2 missions gave America the crucial ‘smoking gun’ against the Soviet Union.

Eleven days before his death, Major Anderson’s U-2 plane took definitive photos that were shown to President Kennedy on October

there will be one valedictorian, not eight.

Sixth -- And last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue.. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately fortunate -to be alive and to be an American. Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you. Do you enjoy reading The Paper? 16, 1962, revealing the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba.

The photo disclosures to Kennedy triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis, of which the world today still speaks of.

U. S. ULTIMATUM TO SOVIET UNION. The youngest elected U. S. president is now sleep deprived as he officially demands that the Soviet Union immediately remove all the Soviet missiles already in Cuba, as well as for the complete destruction of all missile launch sites, which were considered as an imminent (close proximity) firststrike threat to the U. S. mainland. From their launch point in Cuba, these types of missiles are capable of not only quickly reaching targets in the Eastern U. S. with deadly pin-point accuracy if allowed to become operational but, also, such a close range would greatly decrease to almost zero of any practical efforts for American antiballistic defense to engage. THE SOVIET UNION WANTED A NUCLEAR FIRST-STRIKE CAPABILITY. According to declassified documents, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev “had gambled on sending these particular missiles to Cuba with the specific goal of increasing his nation’s nuclear first-strike capability against the United States.” After several secret meetings with his political and military advisors, OBITUARY

Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade of U. S. warships to stop Soviet ships from delivering further military supplies to Cuba. The show of American military force was apparent when three formidable U. S. aircraft carriers, the U.S.S. Independence, U.S.S. Essex, and the U.S.S. Randolph formed a ring around Cuba.

The Soviet Union was warned of the U. S. naval blockade through diplomatic channels. ON THE BRINK OF A NUCLEAR WAR. Despite the blockade, Soviet ships continued en route to Cuba.

For thirteen days in October of 1962 the world held its breath, seemingly on the brink of nuclear war, and prayed for a peaceful resolution to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The leaders of both superpowers recognized the devastating possibility of a nuclear war as the opposing naval confrontation grew closer and closer by the hour as Soviet naval ships continued onward towards Cuba!

A FULL RETALIATORY RESPONSE AGAINST THE SOVIET UNION. At 12:30 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), on Monday, October 22, 1962, President Kennedy interrupted all
