Do pastors and church-going Christians, personally, struggle with pornography and other taboo issues in record numbers today?

If we journalist and media reporters would occasionally just step aside, and let leaders of these various religious groups speak for themselves . . . then maybe we might just learn a thing or two. This exclusive report to The Paper The Paper - 760.747.7119

allows pastors and their congregations the forum to speak out on their various concerns on porn addiction and other taboo afflictions that are silently plaguing and invading U. S. churches today in unprecedented record levels!

One by one, these taboo subjects are brought to light in this most shocking and revealing investigative report. MAJORITY OF PASTORS, MINISTERS & PREACHERS, SAY VIEWING PORNOGRAPHY IS A

MAJOR PROBLEM. Today, 93% of church pastors that were polled and surveyed testified that viewing pornography is an increasing and serious problem in the church today – for themselves, as well as for their congregations. These U.S. Christian churches have taken bold ‘ownership’ in recognising a disturbing reality with their righteous battle cry: “Ignoring (any) spiritual problem within the House of God is not compatible with the will of God.” This battle cry was set by their own

Christian saviour, Himself, over 21 centuries prior, when he ‘cleansed’ the house of worship from any malfeasance and, with ‘righteous anger,’ he openly toppled the tables of money-changers and knocked over the cages of sacrificial birds, and loudly proclaimed for all posterity:

Today, many Christians say that porn is a current, prodigious ‘thief ’ that is invading the House of God across the nation; a most ungodly thief; a thief which is rampant; and stealing the souls of the righteous today – in record numbers.

Despite the stigma and shame of pornography addiction, pastors and ministers are wise enough to know that if they, themselves, have such an addiction, they should come forward and seek professional and spiritual help. To their great credit and valour, they openly admit that ignoring or hiding this silent and insidious addiction, is most harmful, dangerous, and only allows it to spread, unchecked.

And so -- as with their proclaimed Messianic Christ Jesus -- they wish to cleanse God’s Temple as he once commanded in their Holy Scripture (previously cited).

Denying or downplaying that porn addiction has invaded Christian churches at record levels -- is certainly not the path of God’s “divine volition,” as they chorus loudly. MOST PASTORS ARE ADDICTED TO PORNOGRAPHY TODAY. Herewith are some startling statistics as to the prevalence of porn addiction across America today, via Christian polls conducted nation-

Dear mom and dad . . .

It has been three months since I left for college. I have been late in writing and I am very sorry for my thoughtlessness in not having written before. I will bring you up to date now, but before you read on, please sit down. You are not to read any further unless you are sitting down, okay?

Well then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my arrival are pretty well healed by now. I only spent two weeks in the hospital and now I can see almost normally and only get those headaches once a day. Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump was witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near

He also visited me at the hospital and since I had nowhere to live because of the burnt out dormitory, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him. It's really a basement room, but it's kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to get married. We haven't set the exact date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show. Yes, mother and dad, I am pregnant. I know how very much you are looking forward to being grandparents and I know you will welcome the baby and give it the same love and devotion and tender care you gave me when I was a child. The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which prevents us from passing our premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin injections I am now taking daily. I know you will welcome him into the family with open arms. He is kind and although not well educated, he is ambitious. Although he is of a different race and religion than ours, I know that your oft-expressed tolerance will not permit you to be bothered by the fact that his skin color is somewhat darker than ours. I am sure you will love him as I do. His family background is good too, for I am told his father is an important weapons merchant in the village in the Middle East from which he comes.

Somewhere, somehow, a house is being broken into and burglarized every 30 seconds. The thieves, usually amateurs, are in and out within 10 minutes after a quick ransack for anything they can carry out easily and sell quickly.

These robbers usually know the residents – some are even relatives of the homeowners – and two thirds of these break-ins occur during the day, usually about midafternoon when everyone is at work or shopping.

Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you there was no dormitory fire; I did not have a concussion or a skull fracture; I was not in the hospital; I am not pregnant; I am not engaged. I do not have syphillis, and there is no Middle East Terrorist in my life. However, I am getting a D in Sociology and an F in science, and I wanted you to see these marks in the proper perspective. Your loving daughter, •••• I believe it was George Bernard Shaw who wisely said "Do not do unto others as you would have them do unto you; they probably don't feel the same way about it. •••• I remember a time not so long ago when I sent SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) off for a trip home to Bonnie Scotland. This was back in the day before her dementia kicked in. I sent her home for a five week holiday.

Decided to give her a proper send off and visit a nice hotel located right at the Airport. We chose the Airport Marriott. As we drove up they had a doorman dressed in one of those white pith helmets such as they wear in Jamaica. "Walkom to de Marriott Hotel, my fren," he said. "Why, thank you. . .uh, er. .(looking at his name tag). ."Pepe". "You welcome.

Several years ago, thieves smashed their way into our house by leveraging open a patio door and they made off with a TV set and two video recorders. It happened in mid-afternoon while we were out on a quick trip to a nearby shopping center. None of the neighbors who were home at the time heard a thing. It happened the day after we had a contractor replace the roof on our house. We made the mistake of letting a couple of workers use our bathroom during the day. Those thieves didn’t make a mess because they knew exactly where everything was.

This happens when you’re at home, so your residence is even more vulnerable when you’re away. And despite the televised showings of all those criminals caught on camera, less than 20 percent of the homes in this land have any type of security system. Parking wasn't free. $18 in the parking lot or $18 valet parking. I chose valet parking. Ticked me off. I guess I'll always just be a little old country boy but dammit, seems to me if you pay $239 per night, parking ought to be free.

Had our choice of three restaurants. Looked over the wine list. "Ah," says I, to our waiter, "this White Zinfandel looks nice at $18 a bottle." "Aha!", says our waiter, "we use that as industrial strength insecticide! "Of course," says I, "how silly of me not to notice. I'll have the $36 White Zinfandel". "Excellent choice," says our waiter, as he holds out his hand for a dollar tip.

He brought the bottle back, poured a dribble or two in my cup, I swirled it about, smelled it, acted as though I knew precisely what I was doing, and drunk it down. "Great stuff!," says I, "any more? "But of course, my fren'", and he poured SWMBO's glass half full, then mine. I believe it is against the law

church pastors and ministers, most staunch church-going Christians, themselves, are secretly -- but have openly confessed in the surveys/polls -- that the encroachment and easy accessibility to porn sites is now a viable temptation to which they have fallen – in increasing numbers, and at a most alarming rate. The harsh reality today (which can no longer be ignored or “whitewashed,”) is that churches of worship are silently and insidiously being invaded by pornography addiction, everywhere, causing great concern among religious leaders and parishioners, alike.

(1) 76% of 18 to 24-year-old Christians actively seek out porn today. And one myth-buster is that porn addiction is not solely confined to males, but also to the female gender as well. (2) 71% of Christian teenagers (of both genders) confess that they hide their online porn behaviour from their parents. (The stigma prevents them from even openly confessing this to their own, closest peers.)

(3) 68% of church-attending men (of all adult ages) watch pornography on a regular basis.

(4) 87% of Christian women of all ages (combined) have watched pornography.

Instead, exercise your pet in the cool of early morning or evening. If you are out during the day, protect hairless and light-coated dogs with sunscreen.

Protect pets from pests.

Warm weather can mean an increase in fleas and ticks, so be sure your pet is up-to-date with their preventive medication. And since a shorter coat can mean a cooler pet and fewer pests, summer is a great time to visit the groomer.

Remember that dogs show heat stress differently.

Dogs aren’t able to sweat like humans — or speak to let you know when they’re too hot.

(5) 33% of Christian women aged 25 and under, search and watch porn at least once per month.

(6) 13% of Christian women say they have never viewed porn. (7) 55% of Christian married men and 25% of Christian married women say they watch porn at least once a month. (8) In addition to pastors, ministers, and preachers (both denominational and non-denominational), the majority of Christian church-goers, themselves: “Watch pornography regularly.”

IN TODAY’S EASY-ACCESS INTERNET WORLD, THE AVERAGE CHILD SEES PORN AT AGE 11. And it’s not just the church-attending Christian mature adults, married adults, or teen-aged boys and girls, or just the young single men and women who are watching porn.

(1) Because of the easy access to porn in today’s internet world, it is now the young children who are exposed to porn -- despite parental guidelines, and strictures put into place. One variable is that children have friends and their peers’ parents are not always as ‘watchful.’ Children are not stupid. In today’s computer, social media, smart phone, ubiquitous high-tech world, they are often smarter than parents give them credit for. (2) Various Christian research studies, surveys (sources, ibid), and replicated polls, now reveal an indis-

Escondido City Council puts term limit, salary measures on November ballot

The Escondido City council added two more measures to the November ballot during Wednesday’s meeting.

The Escondido City Council this week placed two measures on the Nov. 8 ballot for city voters to decide, one establishing term limits for all elected city offices and one setting the salary of the city’s elected treasurer position. Previously, the council approved a measure asking voters if they want to raise the city’s sales tax by ¾ of a cent for 15 years to bridge projected future budget deficits. Escondido voters will decide on all three ballot measures in the Nov. 8 election. In addition to weighing in on the ballot measures, city voters will elect a mayor and council members to represent council districts 1 and 2.

The council voted unanimously at its meeting Wednesday to place both the term limit and treasurer’s items on the ballot. All three measures — including the sales tax increase — require a simple majority for approval by voters.

The term-limit measure asks voters if they want to establish a lifetime limit of three four-year terms on the city council or in the treasurer’s position, and a two-term limit for the mayor’s office.

Due to an unforeseen water leak, the San Marcos Dental Center office will be closed temporarily for several weeks. They have had to close for renovations.

Long time personal friend, dentist, and loyal advertiser, Dr. Greg Hurt was unpleasantly surprised when he learned the floors in his clinic were “rising.” He had just had them replaced in December of 2019 and warranted for 20 years so ... an investigation was in order. Turns out after a cable, pipe and leak detection study that an iron pipe drainage under the foundation had deteriorated in several areas. So they had to be replaced . . and the clinic had to close during the renovation.

Once the new floor is in then new floor tile must be laid . . and then the clinic will be ready to open again, both for long time patients as

Voters will also decide whether the salary of the elected city treasurer should be reduced to the same level as that of a city council member, or $34,061 annually. The treasurer’s current salary is set by city law at one half of the highest salary paid to a department head other than the city manager, or $105,997. Currently, the office of city treasurer is held by Douglas Schultz, who was first elected to the post in 2016. In 2020, when Shultz had no challengers, the council appointed him to a new fouryear term. According to a city staff report, Shultz supports reducing the treasurer’s salary, but had suggested setting it at one-half of the mayor’s salary, or $39,870. The council instead voted to ask voters to align the treasurer’s compensation with the council’s annual pay. If approved by voters, the measure would take effect in 2024 at the end of Shultz’s current term. The staff report said four other cities in San Diego County have elected treasurers, and the average annual salary for the position is $13,742.

Supervisor Jim Desmond asks “What Happens When you Go Soft on Crime?”

When Proposition 47 was passed in California, like most ballot measures, it was misleading. The 2014 ballot measure was called The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act. How could someone vote against safe neighborhoods and schools? Eight years later, we are now seeing the negative consequences and opposite effects; instead of keeping our neighborhoods and schools safe, Prop 47 put dangerous criminals back on our streets.

The approval of Prop 47 served to reclassify and downgrade a number of serious crimes . The theory went: Our prisons are overcrowded, and we need to give people a second chance, so we shouldn’t prosecute nonviolent crimes. Drug possession, repeated shoplifting, gun theft, and possession of date-rape drugs

(all of which were felonies before Prop 47 was approved) are now classified as misdemeanors, with a penalty of up to one year in jail . However, most often, they result in the issuance of a citation, with no jail time or rehabilitation services. This is what allowed Justin Flores to be released back out on the streets of Los Angeles County. Flores was arrested in 2020 and charged with possession of meth, a handgun, and ammunition. Prior to that, he had been sentenced to prison twice, including first-degree burglary and vehicle theft. For both crimes, he served less than a year in jail. For his latest charge, Flores pleaded no contest, his charges were dismissed, and he was sentenced to two years of probation. He was ordered not to possess weapons, including guns, ammunition, and knives. Earlier this month, Flores ambushed and killed two El Monte police officers.

In the city of Escondido, in the supervisorial district I represent, Craig Blas was arrested on May 7. Police found 235 fentanyl pills, 3.6 grams of powder fentanyl, 36 grams of meth, a loaded magazine, a handgun, and baggies intended to sell drugs. Blas is no stranger to the law — this was the 10th time he had been arrested since 2020. In 2020, he was arrested seven times on similar charges of drug possession and weapons possessions. In

According to one mainstream nondenominational Christian website: “One of the most difficult parts of the Christian life is the fact that becoming a disciple of Christ does not make us immune to life’s trials and tribulations, such as the death of a child, cancer, mental illness, financial hardships, work stress, marital problems, or various carnal addictions such as pornography.”

Of all the great temptations of the world: Lust for Power. Worship of wealth. And The Temptations of the Flesh – the 3rd vice, ostensibly, seems the mightiest of all.

Not all mortals seek Lust for Power. Not everyone necessitates Great Wealth as a requirement for their happiness. Yet all mortals are of the flesh, and carnal lust is an inseparable biological power. “Lust for Carnal Pleasure” is among the highest standards imposed by the Christian Bible. It is the ostensible “ultimate challenge” to mortal beings, as the gauntlet is thrown down in Biblical Scripture: “But I say unto you, That whoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)

I ordered Fillet of Harrow in Strumpet Sauce, or something similar. I don't remember what SWMBO ordered as I was too busy fishing in my pocket for a dollar tip to lay in our waiter's hand as he was getting impatient.

Our waiter then advised us that he was not, unlike the other waiters on staff, Hispanic, but was Persian (which is known today as Iranian). He then proceeded to outline all of the current problems in Iran, Iraq, the formation of Kurdistan, and that he was a refugee from Iran because he had been involved in politics, and on and on. Meanwhile, our plates were getting cold. I slipped him a two dollar tip and began to eat.

I bade SWMBO farewell, gave her a hug, a wee farewell kiss, and gave her a dollar tip. I think by now it was force of habit.

I returned to hotel and checked out. Upon checking out I examined my bill. There were five phone calls I had made, collect, to my businesses. nation, they have not succumbed to any fear, embarrassment, shame, or the stigma that silences weaker souls into submissive silence regarding pornography. According to worldwide publication Mission Frontiers, covering over 160 countries:

“These pornography statistics can be overwhelming. The fact that pornography has such a tight grip on our society does not mean the Church is helpless to fight against it. Instead, Christian leaders must stand up and lead their churches through the battle.” (https://www.missionfrontiers.org-- pornography-and-thechurch.) The Barna Christian study (previously cited) revealed that 93% of pastors see porn as an increasing problem in the church, but only 7% have any specific tailored plan to openly deal with it.

However, by bringing the taboo problem out from the shadows and openly confronting the issue in wideopen sermons from the pulpit, church-goers will have a greater understanding of any “hidden, shameful pain” and, instead, will not just pay “lip service” but “internalize” and “live” the Scriptural credo: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are made possible.” (Matthew 19:26) It bears repeating: Statistically, most Christians have initially (denied) their regular viewing of porn, even to their closest friends and/or pastors. guessed it. PASTORS STRUGGLE WITH LIFE’S TRIALS, TREADING WATER TO KEEP THEMSELVES AFLOAT WHILE STILL HELPING OTHERS. On one radio station, pastors and ministers were discussing how men and women of the cloth need mutual love, respect, and encouragement from their congregations – and that it’s not just “a one-way street.” According to the discussion I listened to ‘live’ on the radio, these many members of the clergy stated that “church fellowship” means just that – which should include not just the congregants, but their pastors as well. “When was the last time you took your pastor to lunch or invited him/her and their spouse for dinner?

“How often have you taken the time to just smile, hug, and show just how much you love, respect, honour and respect him/her? And tell them how you pray for them and that your life is brighter just being blessed by him/her and their edifying sermons from the pulpit?

“Remember, pastors also need love, and show of support, acceptance, and positive feedback. They also can become deeply depressed with no one there to support them when it comes to their own inner demons,” such was the consensus voiced by these ministers, themselves on this particular radio programme. Aside from the omnipresent shadow of porn addiction everywhere, pastors also must contend and battle other afflictions, just as all humans do. DEPRESSION LEVEL OF PASTORS. According to a report by the Schaeffer Institute:

(1) Nearly 2,000 pastors leave the ministry (every month), citing depression, burnout, or being overworked as the primary reasons. (2) The same study also revealed that (90%) of pastors report working well over 55-70 hours a week, and 50% of them feel unable to meet the demands of their job.

(3) 42% of pastors and ministers have given serious consideration to quitting full-time ministry, up 13% from January 2021.

We Have Water – Let’s Use It!

California is once again in a serious drought, the second in a decade. This is a recurring problem in the arid West, but even in dry periods, we should have enough water to meet our needs. Voters understood that in 2014 when they approved a $7.5 billion water bond, which included $2.7 billion to fund construction of new dams and reservoirs. Unfortunately, few projects are underway, or even in the planning stage.

Our largest dams and reservoirs were built before 1979, most between 1945 and 1968, when our population was less than half its current size. My caucus and I have long supported efforts to increase water storage and conveyance capacity, to expand water recycling, and increase use of desalination.

The Governor has announced a new water plan for the state that would create storage for up to 4 million acre-feet of water to capitalize on big storms by storing water for dry periods. Desalination of seawater and salty groundwater would expand, and recycling would be encouraged.

Recycling, desalination, storage reservoirs, reliable groundwater and sensible environmental regulations – all must be part of a comprehensive solution guaranteeing a secure water supply for California. But without changing the bureaucratic and legal hurdles blocking new projects, efforts to create additional storage capacity and water resources will continue to stall.

It’s been eight years, through two administrations, since voters allocated billions for water projects, with almost no results. We need those projects, and we desperately need that water – now! Assemblymember Marie Waldron, RValley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Many can remember the 14-year struggle to build the Poseidon desalination plant in Carlsbad. The plant, which now supplies roughly 10% of San Diego County’s water, was almost derailed by lawsuits and bureaucracy on several occasions. Recently, a new desalination plant proposed for Orange County was blocked by the Coastal Commission, despite the Governor’s support.

Recruiting & Retaining Sheriff Deputies

Last week, we passed an important action when it comes to the safety of San Diego County. Earlier this year, I docketed a Board letter along with Supervisor Anderson to review the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department staffing and recruitment shortages. Since then, County staff has been working with the Sheriff's Department and other entities on a strategy to address staffing shortages. Applications to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department have decreased 25% during the past year and decreased 36% between 2018 and 2021.

I'm pleased to say, that the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a new compensation package to help fill the gap for the over 350 unfilled deputy and other staff positions in San Diego County.

The recommendations that were approved include: 1. Establishing night shift premiums. 2. Increasing the lateral incentive pay to $20,000 for new hires from other law enforcement agencies. 3. Establishing relocation allowances for Deputy Sheriffs’ classifications for new hires who relocate to accept employment with the County of

San Diego. 4. Allowing lateral transfers to accrue vacation at an advanced rate based on prior experiences. We must do all we can to recruit the best and brightest deputies to San Diego County. These brave men and women risk their lives every day protecting our neighborhoods and they should be compensated well for their bravery. I’m going to continue to look for ways to help our law enforcement officials and want to thank all of them for keeping us safe!

Travel Troubleshooter

Q: I booked a KLM flight through Expedia last year. KLM canceled the flight because of COVID in October. Expedia told me to wait 12 weeks for a refund. When no refund arrived, I contacted Expedia. Expedia claims KLM refunded me, even though I paid Expedia. KLM claims they refunded Expedia, which then should refund me.

After some back and forth, Expedia told me to contact my bank. I contacted Chase, my credit card company, to dispute the charges, but it was too late. Expedia has stopped responding to my requests for a refund. I have proof of all communications. I want Expedia to refund me for the amount of the flight. I am out of options since Expedia, KLM, and Chase said they can't do anything. Can you help me get my $427 back? -- Eric Aird, Zürich, Switzerland A: You should have received a prompt refund. Department of Transportation regulations govern your ticket if you used Expedia in the United States. The rules require the airline to issue a refund within seven business days if you paid by credit card and 20 days if you paid by cash or check. Europe has similar rules. I've reviewed the paper trail between you and the various parties -- Expedia, Chase and KLM. What a tangled web. You're right, they're blaming each other.

So who is ultimately responsible for your refund? Your online travel agency, Expedia. It took your money and agreed to act as your agent in purchasing the flight. After KLM canceled your flight, Expedia should have ensured you had a lightning-fast refund. It shouldn't have passed you off to KLM.

And what about your credit card? A Chase representative told you that too much time had passed between your purchase and your chargeback request. That's nonsense. Credit card companies can help their customers if they want, but they choose to cut off all requests after 60 days. They claim the Fair Credit Billing Act, the law that protects credit card customers, won't allow them to dispute claims more than two months old. But the law doesn't prevent banks from handling older disputes. A brief, polite email to Expedia might have done the trick for you. I would have forwarded all of your correspondence along with a polite cover letter to one of the Expedia executive contacts that I publish on my consumer advocacy site. If that didn't work, you might have I contacted Expedia on your behalf. "My agents confirmed the refund has now been processed and the customer has been notified," an

Q: I bought a washer, dryer, miniwasher, and pedestal from LG recently and applied for a $500 rebate. LG says the serial number for the pedestal is incorrect.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

The U.S. President who was a ‘Silent’ Wit

There have been only a handful of “middle Americans” (meaning not from the ranks of the socially and educationally elite), who have ascended to the White House. Calvin Coolidge has to be counted in that small number. Born John Calvin Coolidge Jr., July 4, 1872, he was the 30th president of the United States serving from 1923 to 1929. Coolidge was a Republican lawyer from New England who climbed up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming the 48th governor of Massachusetts.

I went to Home Depot, where I bought the appliances, and they couldn't help me. They gave me a number to call, but that just referred me back to the LG website. I can't get a human on the phone. This is very frustrating. I have been trying to submit my application for the rebate for over two weeks. My deadline is tomorrow. Help! -- Ralph Pack, McDonough, Ga.

A: LG offered you a $500 rebate for your appliances, and it should have given you one by now. LG has a helpful website where it shows you how to find the serial number on your appliance. But it only shows you where they are for washers and dryers, but not for pedestals. I did, however, find information about pedestal serial numbers online. Apparently, you can find the serial number on an exterior side panel. An LG representative also told you that normally the serial number is on a sticker on the door. I'm as frustrated as you are by this case. If I didn't know any better, I'd say LG is offering a rebate but making it impossible to redeem because it's hidden the serial number. But who knows? This may just be a simple misunderstanding. In the end, LG couldn't help you locate your serial number. It's possible someone removed the sticker before you purchased the item. I would recommend that you always check for a serial number when someone delivers your appliance. Maybe the takeaway from this case is: If you're applying for a rebate, you should definitely make sure you can find a serial number before you accept the appliance.

workers in other flailing industries. There also is still much debate among historians as to the extent Coolidge's economic policies contributed to the onset of the Great Depression. However, it is widely accepted, including by his own Presidential Foundation, that the Federal Reserve System under his administration was partly responsible for the stock market crash of 1929, that occurred soon after he left office which signaled the beginning of the Depression. Coolidge's family had deep roots in New England; his earliest American ancestor, John Coolidge, emigrated from Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England, around 1630 and settled in Massachusetts. Coolidge's great-greatgrandfather, also named John Coolidge, was an American military officer in the Revolutionary War and one of the first selectmen of the town of Plymouth. His grandfather Calvin Galusha Coolidge served in the Vermont House of Representatives.

The U.S. vice-presidency did not carry many official duties, but Coolidge was invited by President Harding to attend cabinet meetings making him the first Veep to do so. As vice president, Coolidge and his vivacious wife, Grace, were invited to a number of parties where the legend of "Silent Cal" was born. It is from this time most of the jokes and anecdotes involving Coolidge originate, such as Coolidge being "silent in five languages.” One story has it that a woman seated next to him at a dinner said to him, "I made a bet today that I could get more than two words out of you." He replied, "You lose."

Calvin Coolidge

Coolidge’s response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. The next year, he was elected the 29th vice president, and he succeeded to the presidency upon the sudden death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924, Coolidge gained a reputation as a small-government conservative and also as a man who said very little and had a dry sense of humor, receiving the nickname "Silent Cal." He chose not to run again in 1928, remarking that 10 years as president was "longer than any other man has had it – too long!"

During his presidency, Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the many scandals of his predecessor's administration. He signed into law the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, which granted U.S. citizenship to the indigenous peoples of the United States, and oversaw a period of rapid and expansive economic growth in the country, known as the "Roaring Twenties," leaving office with considerable popularity. He was known for his hands-off governing approach and pro-business stances. As a Coolidge biographer wrote: "He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class, could interpret their longings and express their opinions.” Scholars have ranked Coolidge in the lower half of U.S presidents. He gains almost universal praise for his stalwart support of racial equality during a period of heightened racial tension in the United States. His critics argue he failed to use the country's economic boom to help struggling farmers and

Coolidge often seemed uncomfortable among fashionable Washington society; when asked why he continued to attend so many of their dinner parties, he replied, "Got to eat somewhere." Alice Roosevelt, the feisty daughter of Teddy Roosevelt and a leading Republican wit, underscored Coolidge's silence and his dour personality: "When he wished he were elsewhere, he pursed his lips, folded his arms, and said nothing. He looked then precisely as though he had been weaned on a pickle."

Coolidge and his wife, Grace, who was a great baseball fan, once attended a Washington Senators’ game and sat through all nine innings without saying a word, except once when he asked her the time. As president, Coolidge's reputation as a quiet man continued. "The words of a President have an enormous weight," he would later write, " “… and ought not to be used indiscriminately."

Coolidge was aware of his stiff reputation; indeed, he cultivated it. "I think the American people want a solemn ‘ass’ as a President," he once told noted actress Ethel Barrymore, "I think I will go along with them."

Some historians suggest that Coolidge's image was created deliberately as a campaign tactic, while others believe his withdrawn and quiet behavior to be natural, deepening after the death of his son in 1924. When noted wit and journalist Dorothy Parker learned that “Silent Cal” had died on July 5, 1933, she reportedly remarked: "How can they tell?"

In 2016, he and his wife founded “Anthem of Hope,” a Christian organisation dedicated to “amplifying hope for those battling brokenness, depression, anxiety, shelf-harm, addiction and suicide.” And in a 2017 podcast interview with ChurchLeaders.com, my beautiful Pastor Jarrid Wilson’s message over the airwaves continued saving countless more souls who heard his voice and words of wisdom, everywhere. Then, on Monday, 9 September 2019, he sadly officiated at a funeral for a Christian woman who tragically died by suicide. Pastor Jarrid Wilson was shattered and shared the news on social media later that same Monday morning, after the funeral, when at precisely 11:01 a.m. he wrote: “Officiated a funeral today for a Jesus-loving woman who took her own life. Your prayers are greatly appreciated for the family.”

Hours later, after sending off his message, my beloved brother Pastor Jarrid Wilson committed suicide.

HUGE PROBLEM: PEOPLE JUST DON’T REALLY UNDERSTAND PASTORS – THEY NEED YOUR HELP, GUIDANCE, PRAYERS ALSO. Pastor Jarrid Wilson’s suicide sent shockwaves throughout the world, even PEOPLE magazine had people in shopping queues reading about his death by suicide. His church released the following statement which said it all: “Pastor Wilson was vibrant, positive, and was always serving and helping others. He wanted to especially help those who were dealing with suicidal thoughts. “Sometimes people may think that as pastors or spiritual leaders we are somehow above the pain and struggles of everyday people. People think we are the ones who are supposed to have all the answers. But we do not.” (Senior pastor, Greg Laurie, in a blog post.)

Pastor Jarrid Wilson, who loved his wife Julianne “Juli” Wilson, and his two little boys, Denham and Finch, was taken away at only age 30.

People who do not understand suicide, still do not comprehend that people who suffer from deep clinical depression, PTSD, and mental health issues, are not – because of their own affliction – not afforded the option of not wanting to leave their cherished loved ones behind. In their “broken world of depression and clinical confusion” they are not given that option. They themselves are part of their own affliction.

A fellow church pastor of Wilson, wrote in part: “People obviously don’t understand the totality of mental health issues in today’s world, let alone understand the basic theology behind compassion and God’s all-consuming Grace.”

HIS TWO LITTLE BOYS OFTEN ASK THEIR MOMMY WHEN THEY CAN VISIT THEIR DADDY. His boys are still too small to understand, and have been asking questions about their daddy. And where he has gone.

Both are little towheads (blond) and little Finch, in particular, was “asking so many questions about Heaven,” their mother, Julianne says. “He’s trying to wrap his mind around it all,” she captioned in her Instagram post.

“He knows it’s a happy place, where no one is sick or sad, and he told me it sounds like a really nice place to play.”

Julianne added that her two sons often ask: “When can we take an airplane to visit Daddy (in Heaven)?”

Then, in his innocence, little Finch reminds his mommy, “But make sure Mommy that I need to be home in time to go to school.”

On social media, their mother explains: “He believes Heaven is real, even though he says he can’t see it past the clouds.”

Page 10 • August 25, 2022

Then she posted her own anguish: “I love you, Jarrid. I miss you beyond what my heart can stand. Thank you for loving our boys and me with the greatest passion and selflessness I’ve ever seen or felt in my entire life.” In a follow-up post, Julianne writes: “I love you forever, but I have to say that you being gone has completely ripped my heart out of my chest. You loved me and the boys relentlessly and I am forever grateful that I had YOU as a husband. “I need you.

“But you need Jesus to hold you and I have to be okay with that. Longing to be with you, longing to make you proud. The boys and I miss you so much. I frieking love you too. So much more than you could ever know. Wish I could tell you that right now. We all do.” Then the young widow concluded: “I love you so much, babe. I miss you beyond words. I will continue to shout your Anthem of Hope (his and her suicide prevention project) until my very last breath.”

LESSON TO BE LEARNED: To reiterate and drive the point home: Pastors and Christians are not immune to the “storms of life.”

(1) Nearly 1 in 4 pastors (23%) acknowledge that they have “personally struggled with mental illness,” and half of those pastors said the illness had been clinically diagnosed as such. (2) Recent deaths by suicide from even children of high-profile pastors is no longer uncommon.

Today, a pastor whom I deeply cherish and learn much, from his religious books, lectures, sermons, devotionals, and videos, is the honourable American Southern Baptist evangelical Christian pastor, Richard Duane Warren, founder and senior pastor of the megachurch, Saddleback Church (affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention) in Lake Forest, California. On Friday, 5 April 2013, Pastor Warren’s 27-year-old son, Matthew, committed suicide after a lifelong battle with depression and mental illness. As with the Christian Jesus who openly cleared the Temple from malfeasance 21-centuries ago, Pastor Warren was not silent . . . he also openly declared war against clinical depression, mental health, and suicide within the church by launching “The Gathering on Mental Health and the Church.” That’s how you do it.

Not by hiding it in shame, or denial, but through “transparency” and “righteousness action.” Shortly after Pastor Warren’s son took his own life, Newspring Church pastor, Perry Noble, publicly documented their own struggles with mental health issues and depression within the church. When many Christians, pastors, and various churches, and close Christian friends, all reached out to me, to write this story – I at first hesitated.

Until they guided me through sources, church data, testimonials, and pleas for help in promoting wider public awareness and transparency.

Then I remembered what my Christian brother Pastor Jarrid Wilson said before he took his own life due to depression and mental health issues. Pastor Jarrid Wilson had a dear friend named Travis Akers, who was an Operational Iraqi Freedom veteran and a political commentator. Travis tweeted that Pastor Jarrid was one of the few people who knew of Travis Akers’ battle with alcoholism. But when military veteran Travis Akers finally decided to share his affliction publicly in order to help others, he was applauded by Pastor Jarrid, as Akers recalls: “He (Pastor Jarrid) encouraged and lifted me up. His reply after I went public was: ‘I’m proud of you man! What beautiful transparency!’” That’s all my Christian friends and pastors wanted in me writing this story: “greater public transparency,” so others may be helped.

This sweet face belongs to Curly! Curly is a sensitive soul who's ready to get her next chapter started with a family who will boost her confidence and go at her pace. She entered our care as a stray with a couple of other dogs, and when we first met Curly she was experiencing a lot of fear. She's made amazing progress working with our training team and building relationships with her regular caregivers. Now she's ready to head to her new home! Curly loves enrichment, long walks to sniff around and spending time with humans who have earned her trust. She’s happy hanging out at home where she feels comfortable and snuggling with her people! Is this the girl for you? Curly is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Drive. A Weekly Message from the Mayor of Your Community published in the belief that it is important for elected leaders to communicate with their constituents and that constituents have a means of hearing from their elected leaders.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones Hooray for clean streets

Did you know street sweeping not only helps keep our streets clean, but also prevents stormwater pollution?

By performing routine street sweeping in the city, we are minimizing trash, debris and hazardous materials from flowing into storm drains and polluting our local waterways, such as the Creek Project area.

The City of San Marcos contracts with Cannon Pacific Services, Inc. to provide street sweeping services. Public residential streets are swept once per month and commercial streets are swept twice per month. Streets will not be swept on rainy days.

The city’s Streets Maintenance Division is dedicated to creating safe roads in our community. If you see a street sweeper driving around town, give them a friendly wave to thank them for their service to our community! To find out when your street is scheduled to be swept, visit the public works webpage at san-marcos.net/publicworks or call the Publics Works Department mainline at (760) 752-7550.

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter

Downt own’s Clean & Safe Progra m

Recently Vista launched a new “Clean and Safe” program to provide services to continually improve and safeguard the vitality of our Vista Village, Paseo Santa Fe and historic downtown core.

Community ambassadors work to enhance the safety, cleanliness, and welcoming nature of downtown for residents, visitors, and businesses. The team of ambassadors can be seen around the downtown district connecting with local businesses, cleaning the area of litter, logging maintenance requests that require the City’s attention, and learning the needs of the community. When an area is well taken care of, it looks more inviting, and crime is deterred. So from the sidewalk to the street, the Vista Ambassador team is there to make certain that things are clean and safe for the community and tourists to enjoy.

Kudos to San Marcos City!

Bravo to the City of San Marcos for recently opening the "Family Justice Center." The new facility salvages human lives that have been victimized by unspeakable crimes, such as Human Sexual Trafficking, Domestic Violence, and Child Abuse. This facility provides critical support services for "survivors" of such heinous human crimes. Special thanks to San Diego County District Attorney Ms. Summer Stephan for leading the

charge for the Family Justice Center aka "One Safe Place."

Also, kudos and gratitude are extended to Mr. Friedrich Gomez for inspiring a new generation of student volunteers to get involved in making a "better world." Reading of Mr. Gomez as a dementia caregiver for the ex-wife of newspaper publisher Lyle E. Davis (Editor-in-Chief of The Paper) has inspired others to "get involved on a grassroots level."

We spotted Friedrich Gomez and Mary Davis at Cruisin' Grand (July 29) and if we could "bottle" the pure joy and laughter which we witnessed with these two, then we could make this dark world of ours a much, much brighter and happier place.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

Last night, as of this writing, the council discussed reviewing the Management Agreement the city has with the Center for the Arts. It was clear from the public comments that a number of people thought the council would be discussing defunding the Center. That is and was not the case. It is important to note that the Center belongs to the city, and so the council has a responsibility to monitor it as it does for all city assets, and in fact budgets about 3 million per year to support it. But the rest of the monies to operate the Center come from a non-profit board that hires a staff to put on shows, determine museum exhibits, etc.

The council should not be in the business of determining what is displayed or put on, or any type of censorship, but the council should insist that the Center should be used to elevate and promote the city. In a recent exhibition, I think one of the pieces out of many was a mis-step in the wrong direction. I proposed at the meeting that the new agreement has more detailed financial transparency and that we have a joint guiding “Values Statement” that expresses what we want the Center to do for the city, e.g., educate, heal, elevate, etc. so as to avoid future controversy. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara Mayor of Escondido pmcnamara@escondido.org

2021, he was arrested for drugs, weapons, and the suspected sale of narcotics. Blas, like many criminals, knows the loopholes of the law. By pleading no contest, he was able to evade prison time because his offenses were deemed “nonviolent.” Blas’s criminal history is eerily similar to that of Flores, whose crimes were also deemed nonviolent — until he murdered two El Monte police officers. We can’t wait for someone to murder police officers before we deem them dangerous. There’s clearly something wrong with the law.

The consequences of Prop 47 and Assembly Bill 109 have allowed situations like this to take place. AB 109 resulted in the ongoing transfer of criminals who should be serving longer-term prison sentences in state prisons for felony convictions to county jails. County jails were never designed to house violent criminals for extended periods of time, and county jails were already overcrowded before AB 109 was approved. AB 109 also resulted in the release of tens of thousands of convicted criminals back into our community. Attempted murder, burglary, domestic violence, elder abuse, battery with serious bodily injury, terrorist threats — all of those charges previously resulted in time in California’s state prison system, but they now make offenders eligible for early release under AB 109. I’ve spoken to many law enforcement officers who feel they have their hands tied. They are trying to enforce the law, arresting dangerous criminals, only for them to be let out days later or, in many cases, cited and released immediately.

lowed by HP 22%, and Lenovo 16%. Apple, with its hefty PC price tags and proprietary design, operating system and applications is the fourth largest PC brand. Apple’s PCs are comfortably entrenched in their market niche accounting for about 9% of Worldwide PC shipments annually.

PC sales tumble while prices rise in 2022.

Annual Worldwide PC shipments had been steadily declining since 2011 but perked up in 2020 and 2021 as corporations bought notebook and desktop PCs for millions of employees forced to work from home by Covid restrictions. Now in the first and second quarters of 2022 we are seeing the resumption of this decline. World- wide and American PC sales were down double digits in each of the first two quarters of 2022. World-wide PC sales are dominated by the same three brands that comprise 70% of American PC sales. In the global markets, Lenovo has a 25% market share while Dell and HP are tied at 19% each. Here in America the 2022 second quarter sales numbers show Dell as the leader with a 27% market share fol-

John Van Zante’s Critter Corner

There are several reasons why PC shipments are down here in the first half of 2022. The Covid “work from home” mandates of 2020-21 created a short term demand for PCs that drained world-wide inventories of components and finished PCs. Many PC component manufacturers affected by Covid shutdowns have been slow to get back into full production. Supply chain problems have been aggravated by manpower shortages in the shipping and material handling industries. Adding to these problems world-wide inflation, recession, the uncertainty of the war raging in the Ukraine and you have a “perfect storm” pushing new computer prices ever higher and making consumers reluctant to spend money. But there is an even bigger reason why new PC sales dropped by 18% between the second quarter of 2021 and 2022 continuing the downward trend in new PC sales that began in 2011. While new PC sales have declined in nine of the last 11 years, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PCs IN USE WORLD-WIDE HAS INCREASED EVERY YEAR SINCE 2011. HOW CAN THAT BE? There is only one explanation for this counterintuitive phenomenon; PCs are remaining technologically relevant a lot longer than they did prior to 2011. In simple terms, if your ten year old PC performs all the functions needed for your home or business, why would you buy a new one? The fact that small business and home

Friday, August 26th is National Dog Day. It was started in 2004 by Dog Trainer and Author Colleen Paige. Colleen is also responsible for National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day, National Cat Day, and National Wildlife Day.

I asked Colleen why she chose August 26th. That was the date when her family adopted their first dog from an animal shelter when she was 10 years old. She said that the purpose of National Dog Day is to celebrate ALL dogs. Mixed breed or purebred? It doesn’t matter. Her nationaldogday.com website says, “Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

National Dog Day

Every day is Dog Day here in San Diego County. One tourist told me, “When you pull up to a stop sign, look around at the other cars. You people take your dogs everywhere!”

If you have a dog, celebrate! If you want a dog, visit a shelter or rescue. If it’s not the right time to get a dog, sponsor a pet or find out how you can volunteer to help pets and the people who love them.

At your Rancho Coastal Humane Society, we believe that everyday is Dog (and Cat) day and that Every Animal Deserves a tomorrow.

users are finding it more practical to upgrade their old PCs than buy new ones is only part of the story. Commercial buyers of PC workstations find that their employees enjoy the the “perq” of getting a new PC every three to five years so the “enterprise” PCs are routinely recycled. These “enterprise” level PCs that become available from corporations schools and governments through this recycling process are significantly higher in quality, performance and reliability than the “brand new” retail PCs sold on the Internet and in Big Box retailers like Costco and Best Buy. Small business and home users have recently turned to these “refurbs” as a

more cost effective alternative to purchasing new “retail” PCs.

PCs up to twelve years old can often be upgraded to at least equal new PCs in performance and reliability at a fraction of the cost. Whether you need a free upgrade or trade in estimate on your old PC, want to check out our “refurb” inventory of desktops and notebooks or want a brand new custom built special applications workstation (gaming, editing modeling). I believe in second chances, but being arrested 10 times in a little over two years is well beyond a second chance. Laws in Sacramento continue to put the public in danger and tie the hands of our brave law enforcement officers. Criminal groups know this and are taking advantage of it. Stories such as those of Craig Blas and Justin Flores are unacceptable, but politicians have gone soft on crime in California and adopted policies and laws that favor criminals over the safety of our communities and neighborhoods. It is time for reform. Jim Desmond is an elected supervisor in San Diego County.
