There is no shortage of written material on the Cuban Missile Crisis. If anything, there is an over-abundance of books and related literature on the subject. What is almost never addressed is the pivotal query: Could America have survived a full-scale nuclear war back then?

Military experts and a variety of historians have pondered this ‘necessary’ question. It would have been foolhardy for the United States in 1962 not to have assessed this question on military terms. Otherwise, they would not have been doing their job. As uncomfortable and regrettable as the topic may seem, emergency preparedness and military protection of U. S. citizens must all be prudently evaluated. This is a requirement if we, as a free nation are to, realistically, make tough, calculated choices. Viable options and choices that may best safeguard our very existence in an often turbulent and unpredictable world. Over half a century has passed – 54 years to be exact – and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 continues to be a specter, the Ghost of Worldly Past, which continues to haunt us, presenting history often with little form or substance which resembles true fact. The event seems to have taken on a mutant life of its own, bearing little resemblance to its actual self. Professor Sheldon Stern, college teacher, esteemed author, and erstwhile historian at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, says that a half century later there are still, “Misconceptions, half-truths, and outright lies,” concerning the Cuban Missile Crisis. And most reputable historians agree with that harsh assessment.

MISCONCEPTIONS. As pointed out by Dr. Stern and most historians, ‘pop culture’ such as found abundantly in the print and visual media (tabloids, magazines, books, television, and motion pictures) have irreparably shaped public opinion. Even on today’s global internet which feeds an intellectually hungry world there are no shortages of sensationalized themes, such as: “The Cuban Missile Crisis Almost Ended the World,” and “Black Saturday, the Day the Entire World Almost Perished,” or “The 13 Days That Almost Ended Human Civilization,” and from England, “The Day the World Almost Died.”

DID THE WORLD REALLY ALMOST END? Such media moments like, “The Apocalypse Almost Happened,” has ingrained itself so deeply and so indelibly into the public consciousness to this very day, that it is no exaggeration to say that it

changed an entire nation of people.

Even the world’s highly-esteemed professor, Jim Willis, Ph.D, who has taught at the university level for over three decades and served 6 lecture tours for the U. S. State Department, goes so far as to say that the Cuban Missile Crisis was a leading “media moment that changed America.”

But, was the Cuban Missile Crisis truly a close dance with the apocalypse? Was the total destruction of human civilization truly at risk, back then? As Professor Stern notes: “Never before or since, has the survival of human civilization been at stake in a few short weeks of dangerous negotiations.” This is the crossroads of apocalyptic thinking where many military historians and contemporary secular scholars, today, begin to part company from Stern’s end-of-the-world scenario. An

ever-growing consensus among the most august military and secular academicians now see things completely different than the near-ending of human civilization.

According to many of the most qualified minds, both then and now, the Cuban Missile Crisis was nowhere near the end of the world, nor was it anything that resembled any apocalypse, even if nuclear war was unleashed to its fullest capacity. (The apocalypse is commonly used to refer to the so-called “end-time scenario” or to the “end of the world in general.”) Make no mistake, the Cuban Missile Crisis was a most significant moment that would have changed the entire world had a full-scale nuclear exchange developed between the Soviet Union and the United States. Declassified documents clearly show many White House personnel wonder-

ing aloud, “Will there be a tomorrow?” And rightfully so. On record, U. S. Defense Secretary at the time, Robert S. McNamara, said he wondered out loud if he, “would live to see another Saturday night?”

Certainly for millions of people, if nuclear war had broken out, there would most certainly not have been another tomorrow.

COULD WE HAVE SURVIVED A NUCLEAR WAR WITH RUSSIA IN 1962? Placing popular public opinion aside and allowing this question to become an ‘open forum’ for qualified military and secular historians to address, the overwhelming and conclusive answer may surprise, or even shock you. In 1962, we were fully cognizant then – and now – that a full-scale nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the

United States would not have resulted in total mutual annihilation, now popularly known as MAD. (MAD stands for “Mutually assured destruction” and “is a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a fullscale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides would cause the (complete annihilation) of both the attacker and the defender.”) If reality is allowed to step in, the United States would have survived with tens of millions of Americans dead (a most dreadful scenario we, most certainly, wished to avoid -- if possible). However, in such a brutal, lethal nuclear exchange, the Soviet Union, on the other hand, would most certainly have been erased, completely, from existence, in the opinion of military both then, and now. Even the Soviet Union, privately, knew this ultimate outcome. Russian propaganda aside, Khrushchev’s military advisors knew better.

Had the Soviet Union truly believed otherwise, and their belief system was well-founded on military fact, they may never have – in the face of human world history -- “stood down” (as expressed in military terms) so ignominiously as they did when their bluff was called. 1962 BALANCE OF POWER. When John F. Kennedy campaigned for the U. S. presidency, one of his key issues was an alleged “missile gap,” between us and the Russians. In stark

reality, there was no “missile gap” that America had fallen behind on.

In actual fact, the United States led the Soviet military machine by a superwide margin – and this margin would continue to greatly increase. The “gap” soon resembled a chasm, with American (military) missile technology far and away in the lead. In 1961, one year prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet Union had only 4 ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) called R-7 Semyorka. By October 1962 during the 13-day standoff, the Soviet Union may have possessed close to 40. Declassified intelligence reports say this number (may) have been as high as 75, but, this margin of difference would have made little difference in the overall picture.

By contrast, the United States had over 170 ICBMs at the time, and quickly building more. Furthermore, America’s naval program was far, far superior to Russia’s at the time (and still is today). Back in 1962, the United States had 10 George Washington and Ethan Allen class ballistic missile submarines. The topper is that every one of these U. S. ballistic-missile submarines had the capability to launch 16 Polaris missiles each, with a range of 2,500 nautical miles. Each UGM-27 Polaris missile was a two-stage solid-fueled nuclear-armed rocket. What made our U. S. ballistic submarines so ferociously deadly was that on July 20, 1960, these 10 subs became the world’s first submarines able to launch nuclear-tipped Polaris missiles – while completely submerged, underwater. This was a most breathtaking achievement in modern warfare, a fact the Russians were well aware of. Ten ballistic missile submarines, each able to launch 16 nuclear-armed rockets, submerged and undetected, was a most startling achievement, unmatched in the maritime world at that time. If you don’t have a calculator handy, that’s a total of 128 Polaris missiles raining down thermos-nuclear annihilation. At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, these sister subs were ringed close enough to destroy any country several times – enough overkill to make the rubble bounce multiple times. (The predecessor to the GPS satellite navigation system, the submarines used a similar system (eventually known as NAVSAT) because they needed to know their position at launch, in order for the missiles to hit their target with unforgiving accuracy.)

In essence, Khrushchev was, unwittingly, his own worst enemy when he loudly boasted to the world that the Soviets were building missiles “like sausages.” Such puffery from the flamboyant Russian leader only increased the production of more U. S. missiles, prodigiously adding more to our already-superior supply. Nevertheless, Khrushchev unwittingly fueled the misconception of a missile gap with the Soviets proudly pulling away and, as Khrushchev phrased it: “Waving bye-bye to the Americans.”

On the cover of the September 8, 1961 issue of TIME magazine, Khrushchev was splashed in living color – nuclear fireball mushrooming in the backdrop – and pointing his finger making his ominous promise: “We Will Bury You!” As TIME reported “Moscow’s bang sent shudders down millions of spines.” (Khrushchev had made the

The actual tale of the tape was a dismal picture for Khrushchev. At the time, the Soviet Union possessed mediumrange ballistic missiles in descent quantity, about 700 at best. The downside with this modest arsenal of medium-range missiles was that they were (very) unreliable and extremely inaccurate. Adding to the crushing disability of inaccuracy, this arsenal of 700 missiles where only medium-range, not ICBMs.

On top of all this, the U. S. in 1962 had a considerable advantage in total number of nuclear warheads: America had 27,000 nuclear warheads against the Soviet’s 3,600. And, as if this were not lopsided enough, the Soviet’s comparatively meager number of nuclear warheads suffered greatly in its capability for target-accuracy. In translation, the U. S. had a considerable advantage in specific missile technology which is a requirement for accurate missile delivery.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States also led in missile defense capabilities, as well as naval and air power. It is true that the Soviet Union at the time had a 2-1 advantage in conventional ground forces, especially in field guns and tanks in the European theater, however, in a (totally unlimited) cataclysmic nuclear exchange – there would be instant

annihilation upon the Russian landscape – repeatedly -- not a single, one atomic bomb drop, as in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. NOT THE APOCALYPSE. The Cuban Missile Crisis, in retrospect for many military authorities and strategic analysts today, would not have been a true apocalyptic event. (To reiterate, the term apocalypse is commonly used to denote the “the so-called end-time scenario” or the “end of the world in general.”) In the expert view of many analysts today, the Cuban Missile Crisis was, indeed, a truly dire world event but was revved up in over-sensationalized fashion as: “The 13-Day Standoff That Almost Ended the World.”

According to many experts on the subject, such an event would have been unimaginable, but far from being apocalyptic.

Current view shared by an ever-growing number of military historians is that America would have survived such a punishing exchange of thermonuclear weapons, perhaps being successfully hit 20 to 25 times by incoming Russian nuclear arsenal – but far from wiping out the United States. On the opposite side of the coin – according to international authorities – the Soviet Union would have been totally decimated by America’s overwhelming edge, which we held at the time. The view being that America at the time had almost 4,000 nuclear devices that were all fully capable of reaching Russia, statistically unimpeded. In contrast, the Soviet’s at the time were only armed

with about 300 nuclear weapons capable of reaching American soil – but the caveat is that (most) of their nuclear weapons were only via Russian bombers, which in turn would have been vulnerable to being eliminated by U. S. strategic fighters.

In Cuba at the time, U-2 spy planes clearly showed the first arrival of Russian R-12 medium-range ballistic missiles (the first arrival on the night of September 8, 1962 and the second arrival on September 16). Each R-12 missile is capable of carrying a thermonuclear warhead. Just 90 miles off the Florida coast, this posed an unacceptable nuclear missile threat at a ridiculously close-range. FAST FORWARD TO BLOCKADE. The Cuban Missile Crisis showdown was now fully underway and the world held its collective breath. Initially, during the blockade, the Soviet Union clearly showed no indication of backing down. Quite the opposite. In fact, the Soviet Union had made several comments to the contrary. And the United States had absolutely no reason to believe the Soviet Union was bluffing.

Under the circumstances, a dangerous, volatile stalemate was reached. A “Responsive Strike Alert” was made against the Soviet Union. Simply put, the U. S. was preparing for an invasion of Cuba and also preparing for a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union if the Russians responded militarily against us, which was a very real possibility. televised message to an American nation. In it, he noted: “It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack by the Soviet Union on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union.”

The words hung in the air, like daggers: “. . . a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union.”

The words could not have been clearer – a full, unlimited, total nuclear attack against the country of Russia was in the balance. America was now fullycommitted to its promise and there was now no bluffing whatsoever at the political and military poker table.

At the precise time of the speech, an official military directive went out to all U. S. Forces around the world, placing them on DEFCON 3.

The next day at 10:00 p.m. EDT, the U. S. raised the readiness level of SAC forces to DEFCON-2. For the only (confirmed) time in United States history, B-52 bombers went on airborne alert, and B-47 medium bombers were dispersed to various military and civilian airfields and made ready for takeoff – all fully equipped – on just 15minutes notice.

One-eighth of SAC’s 1,436 bombers were placed on airborne alert and over 145 intercontinental ballistic missiles all poised in the direction of the Soviet Union, ready for launch status (some of them targeting Cuba).

interceptors to 16 designated areas within 9 hours, with 1/3 maintaining 15-minute alert status. Additionally, 23 nuclear-armed B-52s were sent to orbit crucial points within striking distance of the Soviet Union. This combined action sent a ferocious signal that the United States was in deadly earnest. Air Force General, Jack J. Catton, later estimated that approximately 80 percent of SAC’s (Strategic Air Command’s) war planes were ready for launch during this time. U. S. Air Force four-star general, David A. Burchinal recalls in his own words: “The Russians were so thoroughly stood down, and we knew it. They didn’t make any move. They did not increase their alert; they did not increase any flights, or their air defense posture. They didn’t do a thing, they froze in place. We were never further from nuclear war than at that time, never before.”

They (the Soviet Union) were, militarily and technologically, over-matched – and they knew it. Air Force general, David Burchinal, who would become Deputy Commander in Chief, United States European Command said: “The Russian capitulation was never in doubt. The CD (Chrome Dome) operations were designed to make it clear to the Russians that they were hardly even competing in the military confrontation, and could quickly have been destroyed.” THE OUTCOME. down, the Soviet Union with great reluctance, backed down and agreed to dismantle all missiles they had placed in Cuba, only 90 miles off the Florida coast. In turn, President Kennedy agreed to not invade Cuba in the future. Also, Kennedy secretly agreed to remove all U. S. missiles in southern Italy and in Turkey. This move on the part of the United States remained a secret for the better part of 25 years. Kennedy considered the removal of U. S. missiles from Turkey and Italy as a “symbolic pledge,” since the Jupiter rockets were already obsolete and we had already planned for their removal/replacement. (For historical accuracy, there remains some dispute as to the removal of American missiles from Italy was part of the secret negotiations. Khrushchev later wrote in his memoirs that it was. Regardless, when the Cuban Missile Crisis had subsided, Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara, gave the official order to dismantle the U. S. missiles in both Italy and Turkey.)

Military savants are quick to point out that their views are not to minimize the danger of that era, nor to glorify it but, instead, to better put into perceptive a more accurate historical view during that most intense international event. Unimaginable emotional stress can take its toll on U. S. Presidents, much of which remains hidden and out of public awareness. After the Cuban Missile Crisis, Robert Kennedy later revealed that there were intense moments when his brother, President John F. Kennedy, agonized in worry as in a near-death struggle. In one account, during the most crucial hours,

Robert Kennedy said of his presidential brother: “His hand went up to his face and he closed his fist and his eyes.”

In the Cuban Bay of Pigs failure, Kennedy was well scrutinized, head in pillory. In the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was lionized. Kennedy knew of the vagaries of life and was most fond of the ancient adage: “Victory has a hundred fathers and defeat is an orphan.” (The quote had its germination 19 centuries earlier with Roman senator and historian, Publius Cornelius Tacitus who said of war, “Victory is claimed by all, failure to one alone.” Tacitus’ remark was later borrowed and revised by Italian diplomat, Count Galeazzo Ciano in The Ciano Diaries, 1939-43.) War is a messy business and the saying that “nobody wants war” is no longer a self-evident truth. History, both past and present, clearly reveals that there are some who crave it; who beckon it; even embrace it. And there are times when it was thrust upon us.

Even today, there are belligerent factions and even rogue nations, like North Korea, that openly voice nuclear plans to attack and destroy us. Like all things political, there remains two sides of every story and history is often written by the hand of the victor. IN RETROSPECT. According to Raymond L. Garthoff, specialist on arms control, intelligence, the Cold War, NATO, and the former Soviet Union, he observes that: “In the United States, there was almost universal approbation for President Kennedy’s handling of the crisis.” British-American journalist and U. S. State Department reporter, Michael Dobbs writes that: “The relentlessly upbeat tone was established by the

court historian, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., who wrote that Kennedy had ‘dazzled the world’ through a “combination of toughness and restraint, of will, nerve and wisdom, so brilliantly controlled, so matchlessly calibrated.”

to a vast number of military experts – past to present – who were generous in their time and attention.

Overall, the events of October 1962 are widely hailed as Kennedy’s finest hour. Graham Allison joins many others in presenting them as, “A guide for how to defuse conflicts, manage greatpower relationships, and make sound decisions about foreign policy in general.”

To all of you, this article is dedicated.

On the other hand, historian Sheldon Stern partially agrees, noting that Kennedy repeatedly rejected the military advice of his advisors and associates who called for military force and the dismissal of peaceful options.

And also, very special thanks to the countless fans of The Paper who requested, via email and in person, for me to write an article dealing with this theme. Especially my military brothers and sisters who served with me in the U. S. Navy on board various combat ships in radar’s CIC (Combat Information Center).

Regardless how one swings the measuring rod of evaluation, the Cuban Missile Crisis and America’s ability to survive, remains a most unforgettable chapter in United States history.

(This article, by design, avoided referencing the Soviet Navy officer, Vasili A. Arkhipov, often hyped as “The Man Who Saved the World,” and “The Man Who Stopped World War III” on the premise that his inclusion did not fit in with the overall theme of: “Would America Have Survived a Nuclear War?” Also, much of what has been said of him has, sometimes, bordered on sensationalism and hyperbole, with sketchy technical aspects conspicuously missing.)

Renovations are coming to the Capitol

As a member of the Joint Rules Committee, we have been tasked with directing an upgrade or replacement for the rapidly deteriorating State Capitol Building Annex. The building was designed in the late 40's and completed in 1952 at a cost of $7.5 million. Originally intended to house a part-time Legislature, the Annex is home to the offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor, 115 of California’s 120 lawmakers, along with 1,400 executive branch and legislative staff.

contains hazardous building materials such as asbestos and lacks adequate fire protection. There are electrical wiring and ductwork issues along with deteriorating galvanized sewer and drainage lines. Today, the building is overcrowded and fails to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards. The Annex was built long before computers, photocopiers and cell phones, with rows of empty wooden phone booths still dominating some of the hallways. Many of the building’s “key systems are in the 65th year of their expected 50 year useful life.”

Safety issues are a primary concern. Last year, the Annex was visited by 1.5 to 2 million people, including tens of thousands of school children. The Annex

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, REscondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

California’s main Capitol building, completed in 1874, is a historic treasure. However, after World War II it became obvious that the old building wasn’t large enough to handle the needs of a growing state. The Annex, at approximately 365,000 square feet, solved that problem for decades.

The old Capitol building was extensively upgraded in the 1970s and 80s, but these upgrades did not include the Annex. Modernizing technology, enhancing visitor access and upgrading safety compliance will bring "the people's house" into the 21st century.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

In Honor of The President’s Lady

During his time before and during his presidency, Andrew Jackson fought a number of duels, primarily in defense of his wife, Rachel. Her husband’s dueling and vehement arguing was the ultimate in protection of his lady’s honor.

Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson, born Rachel Donelson on June 15, 1767, was the wife of Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States. She lived with him at their Nashville, Tenn., home, known as “The Hermitage.” Ironically, Rachel died just days after her husband’s election and before his inauguration in 1829, therefore she never served as First Lady. Nonetheless, Jackson’s detractors kept sniping at him about his “adulteress” wife, continuing to call them out. In those days, he didn’t have Twitter so his dueling challenges made him the ultimate fighting president. Rachel was married at first to Lewis Robards in Nashville. In about 1791, she eloped with Andrew Jackson, believing that Robards had secured the couple a divorce. However, it was later revealed Robards had not, meaning that her marriage to Jackson was technically bigamous. They were forced to remarry in 1794 after the divorce had been finalized.

She had a close relationship with Jackson and was usually anxious while he was away tending to military or political affairs. During the deeply personal prelude to the 1828 election, Rachel was the subject of extremely negative attacks from the supporters of Andrew Jackson's opponent, John Quincy Adams. Jackson believed these attacks hastened her death, and thus blamed, even challenged his political enemies. Her love for her husband was unmistakable. She languished when he was away for politics, fretted when he was away at war, and doted on him when he was at home. Unlike her husband, Rachel never liked being in the spotlight of events. She would consistently warn her husband to not let his political accomplishments rule him. After Jackson's legendary victory at the

Battle of New Orleans, she warned his subsequent popularity would tempt him to value his glory over his family.

During the process of Rachel and her first husband’s divorce, Kentucky became a state instead of a territory of Virginia and North Carolina. Territorial management, including Tennessee, was turned over to the Federal Government. These complicating factors were understood by locals and the unusual circumstances of the Jackson marriage were not greatly discussed in Nashville society.

In 1793, when Andrew and Rachel learned the divorce had never been granted, it technically made Rachel a bigamist and an adulterer in the eyes of the law. Further complicating situation, the legitimacy of the Jackson marriage came into question because they were married in then-Spanish-controlled Natchez, Mississippi. The Jacksons were Protestants, and only Catholic marriages were recognized as legal unions in Mississippi. After the divorce was finally legalized in 1794, Andrew and Rachel wed again in a quiet ceremony in her mother’s home. According to the Tennessee Historical Society, John Quincy Adams' presidential campaigns targeted Jackson's "passion and lack of self-control" in both 1824 and 1828, "making it central to the argument that he would devastate the integrity of the Republic and its institutions.” (Does that sound familiar?) One newspaper ran an article asking, “‘Ought a convicted adulteress and her paramour husband be placed in the highest offices of this free and Christian land?”

The publicity surrounding her and the public knowledge of what was considered a very private matter caused Rachel to sink into depression. She reputedly told a friend “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than live in that palace in Washington.” Adding to her stress, in 1828, Their adopted son, Lyncoya Jackson, died at the Hermitage. Between the scandal, her son’s death, and a heart condition she spent much of the campaign depressed and crying. Rachel died suddenly on Dec. 22, 1828, probably of a heart attack. That her death came immediately before the newly elected president left for Washington was more than an inconvenience; it was crippling. He held her body tightly until he was pulled away, lingering at the Hermitage until the latest possible date.

Even though her maladies began as early as 1825, Jackson always blamed his political enemies for her death. "May God Almighty forgive her murderers," Jackson swore at her funeral. "I never can." She was buried on the grounds at The Hermitage wearing the white dress and shoes she had bought for the Inaugural Ball. Her epitaph reads: “A being so gentle and so virtuous slander might wound, but could not dishonor.”

Rachel Jackson was the title character of a 1951 historical novel by Irving Stone, The President's Lady, which told the story of her life with Andrew Jackson. In 1953, the novel was made into a film of the same name starring Susan Hayward and Charlton Heston as the Jacksons. Tom Morrow's books are available at Amazon.com in soft-cover or via Kindle E-mail.

Wine Month Celebrated at History Museum Exhibit - September is California Wine Month and docents at the Valley Center History Museum are inviting lovers of wine to visit the museum this month to see a recently-expanded exhibit that showcases Valley Center as home of San Diego County's first commercial winery 165 years ago. As wineries around the state host tastings, vineyard tours and festivals, the local museum is showcasing its historic role in the production of grapes. Along with photos and documents, visitors will see a rare copper vat that was used in grape-crushing at the Vineyard Ranch which was established in 1852 by Col. A.E. Maxcy who planted 1,500 acres in Muscat and Mission grapes. History Museum president Earl Brown said September, start of the traditional annual harvest season, is an appropriate time to recognize the role played by Valley Center in California's winemaking industry. The longheld "first commercial winery” claim of the Valley Center Historical Society was validated in the 2016 publication, "A History of Wines & Wineries in San Diego County". Author Richard Carrico states, "Maxcy's Vineyard Ranch, near what was then known as Bear Valley and is now Valley Center, was the first recorded operation to produce and sell wine."

Apology to Escondido

On Wednesday, August 23, 2017 hundreds of Escondido residents attended a City Council meeting to express support for the Escondido Public Library. A group of residents requested time to make a presentation about the library but Mayor Abed refused their request. Even so, they sat patiently through a staff presentation that included a sales pitch from the vendor. I apologize to the residents who were treated with disrespect and condescension. Maxcy's death in 1901, the ranch was acquired by a prohibitionist who abandoned the winery. Ruins of the original winery, however, remain near Old Guejito Ranch Road. In recent years, grape-growing has been restored to the site, and the first bottles of wine were produced and sold several years ago. Elsewhere in the Valley CenterPauma Valley area, there are an estimated one dozen boutique wineries in operation. The History Museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road is open Tuesday through Saturdays from 12noon to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit vchistory.org or call 760.749.2993.

Nearly 100 of the attendees spoke eloquently about the value of our public library and the quality of programming and services currently offered. Hours of resident testimony gave way to Council comments. Councilman Gallo said he was “tired of this crap” in reference to public feedback. AMERICA’S GREATNESS

This is not a political question about America’s condition – is she great or not great? There has been much said about our country’s condition. The focus has been on the rallying cry, “Make America Great Again.” Is America not great? “What makes America great?” was asked in the 19th century of a French Diplomat, Alexis de Tocqueville. After much research and travel in this country, he concluded that it was because of the churches and their spiritual influence. If America has lost her greatness, and it is based on de Tocqueville’s studies that our spiritual and moral bearings have been compromised, the church has defaulted in her mission and

I want to make another case for America’s greatness. It is not white supremacy, the Nazi slogan, the Klu Klux Klan, or any other exclusive supremacy group. It is rather in the diversity of many races, colors, religions, sexes, - immigrants from all parts of our world. When allowed to mix, share, give and take, it pollinates a society. Out of it comes genius, productivity, and the best of the mixture. Most of America’s industrial development, art, science, literature, religious thought and music, and culinary skill has come from the immigrant. All this has helped make America great. More of the same will only add to her greatness. The argument that there are some who enter this country and seek to do us harm cannot be denied anymore than there are those in our own midst who seek our destruction. As citizens, we need to pray for our country and those who lead us that they have wisdom, integrity, and humility. With gratitude and thanks, we will keep America great!

New Honda Dealership Coming

The familyowned CAR G r o u p announced earlier this year it has been selected by Honda to open a dealership in Vista. The CAR Group has selected properties on West Vista Way, including the former Vista Entertainment Center site. The owner had been trying to sell the property for over a year and closed the bowling alley in May. The new Vista dealership, the Norm Reeves Honda Superstore, will be the company’s sixth Honda dealership and will sell new and

Works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Oceanside Harbor Days

Come join us on September 16th and 17th for our annual Harbor Days celebration, taking place from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. This event is sponsored by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Tri-City Medical Center and Genentech, and will be sure to please attendees of all ages. Included in the festivities is a Pier Swim called the Tiki Swim, where competitors swim with a yellow inflatable duck tethered by a bright red rescue boat. There will be other fun activities to experience, including arts and crafts, great food from several vendors, the Pirates

Cove exhibition, vintage pirate ships, a kid’s area, a Nail n’ Sail competition, military, police and fire displays and so much more! Attendees can participate in a sandcastle competition, fishing derby, pancake breakfast, beer garden, and live music will be provided. Mark your calendars and plan to attend with family, friends and neighbors for a fun-filled day. Harbor Days is free to the public with complimentary transportation provided by the Chamber via the British Bus Company.

They will pick up Harbor Days attendees from shuttles stops in the Harbor and provide pick-up/drop-off locations at the downtown Oceanside Transit Center, located at Seagaze and Cleveland Streets.

“The sales prevention department”

That’s me, at least that’s what Nome and the guys call me. Actually we are all pretty good at sales prevention when it comes to preventing the sale of new PC systems. There are often alternatives to buying a new “retail” PC that give you better performance, quality and reliability. That’s one huge difference between the way we relate to our customers and the way the employees in “big box” retail stores like Best Buy, Fry’s, Staples and Office Depot relate to their customers. The business model for these stores is Prayer Helps Pastoral Services Available Always Here to Help and to Pray

With their orientation toward product sales, big box stores have little interest in providing real customer service. Even when they try, (like Best Buy’s “Geek Squad”) when it comes to computers they are woefully inept and ridiculously expensive (check out their ratings on Google). It isn’t because they aren’t good kids, they’re simply inexperienced. The high turnover in these entry level positions coupled with an understandable lack of interest by corporate management in providing real computer service renders their technicians ineffective. Computer service and problem solving is not their business, new product sales is. Here at the Computer Factory our primary business is service, PC sales are secondary. Our revenue may be evenly split between product sales and service but our profitability is based on how good a job we do in solving problems and providing answers. Certainly we can sell you a brand new notebook or desktop PC with Windows7 or 10, copy your files over and give you a trade in value on your old

We can add or replace a business or home desktop or notebook PC with a refurbished “corporate” PC of higher quality and performance than that of a new “retail” PC costing twice as much. We try not to let any useful computer go to waste. A notebook PC with a broken screen may not be worth fixing, but hook it up to a monitor, close the lid and plug in a mouse and keyboard and, voila, you have a perfectly usable wi-fi desktop PC for $100 dollars.
