“World of Reptiles” at Escondido Public Library – On Thursday, August 24th, from 3:30-4:30pm, a program called “World of Reptiles” will be held in the Turrentine Room at the Escondido Public Library, 239 S. Kalmia St., Escondido, for children ages 5-12. The program features EcoVivarium of Escondido, a local non-profit organization that introduces children to the world of reptiles, their habitats, favorite foods, and the role humans play in their survival. This program presents an opportunity for hands-on learning and interaction so children can get up-close and personal with reptiles, such as bearded dragons, lizards, and snakes. Children’s Librarian Kristine Macalalad states, “EcoVivarium founder Susan Nowicke’s passion for our scaly friends and education is infectious. History Center to Hold Knife Smithing Classes at Blacksmith Shop – Starting Sunday, August 27th, and three Sundays thereafter, from 9am-3pm, a course for advanced students on the fundamentals of Knife Smithing will be held at the Bandy Blacksmith Guild at the Escondido History Center, 321 N. Broadway, Escondido. This course will provide you with necessary skills, knowledge, and guidance to be able to begin making functional yet beautiful knives. In the four weeks, in a small class setting with competent and skilled instructors, you will cover all basics and concepts of fundamental forging and grinding skills, final fit and finish, tools and equipment of the trade, metallurgy and science of knife smithing, and the philosophy, history and art of making knives. Minimum age for this class is 18; no exceptions. This is not a beginning class; students must have already completed a full course in general blacksmithing. There will be personalized instruction; all tools and materials included in the price of $250. Tuition due one week prior to class; no refunds or transfers after that time; Mastercard/Visa accepted.
