He was only a high school dropout, yet he founded a college which eventually would become known as Walsh University, now in Canton, Ohio.
He ran away from home at the tender age of 16, without completing his high school education and yet, in time, he would pose as a fake doctor, successfully performing major, complex surgeries.
He gave the word ‘identity theft’ new meaning back in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s until death stopped his masquerades in 1982.

History is replete with famous imposters, but none such as this one.
His true name was Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Jr. and he proceeded to stun the world by successfully masquerading as a civil engineer, a lawyer, a doctor of psychology, prison warden (twice), sheriff’s deputy, a Benedictine monk, a Trappist monk, an editor, a cancer research scientist, college professor, child-care expert, dean of philosophy at a Pennsylvania college, zoology graduate, ship’s doctor and the list goes on and on. Had he never really existed in the flesh, such exploits would have been considered too far-fetched to be placed in the non-fiction section of any library. Even by Hollywood movie-making standards, such a script might be rejected as being too embellished for a documentary – perhaps better suited for the genre of fantasy fiction, such as found in blockbuster movies such as “The Transformers,” today. Yet, he did exist. And he was a ‘transformer,’ in the purest sense of that word.
Amazingly, he truly transformed into the roles of many elite individuals by forgery, faked documents, and other insidious means of identity theft. Furthermore, a book would be written about his life in 1960, aptly titled “The Great Imposter,” which became an instant New York Times bestseller. He was born almost 100 years ago as Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Jr., on December 21, 1921, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. While growing up in the lower southwest area of Lawrence, he was simply called “Fred” instead of Ferdinand by friends and neighbors.
Fred’s father, Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Sr., worked in the old Theatre District in Lawrence as a movie projector operator. He prospered enough to relocate the entire family to the more affluent area on Jackson Street, an upper-class section of the city known as Tower Hill Neighborhood. Fred’s father was hit hard by the Great Depression which necessitated the family to move from the more exclusive Tower Hill Neighborhood to a much poorer area of town. During these financially-hard times, young Demara, Jr. decided to run away from home in 1937 when he was only sixteen years old and proceeded to join the Cistercian monks in Rhode Island. The rigorous selfdenying life of a monk proved too austere for him so he moved on.
Demara began his great imposter lifestyle when he joined the United States Army in 1941. It was there when Demara borrowed the name of his Army buddy, Anthony Ignolia, and decided to go AWOL (absent without authorized leave).

Still AWOL from the U. S. Army, he then joined the U. S. Navy and trained as a hospital corpsman. Not satisfied with his training career he decided to fake his own suicide masterfully. He did so by leaving a small parcel (a package wrapped in paper) with a few clothes inside. All this he left on the wharf, close to the loading-and-unloading area for ships. The topper was that he even left a most convincing suicide note, complete with emotional farewell. His life of deception was off to a nefarious start.
At one time he stole the identity of a certain Dr. Robert L. French, a Naval officer who held a Ph.D in religious psychology. Posing as a fake professor, Demara taught bril-

liantly on the academic subject of psychology at Gannon College (now a university) in Erie, Pennsylvania. Still pretending to be Professor French, Demara proceeded to study theology, cosmology, and epistemology at Chicago DePaul University.
The uncanny ability for Ferdinand Demara to ‘pull off’ these faked roles with technical success has been greatly discussed by experts in the various fields in which Demara placed himself into.
Speculations on Demara’s great success in his various charades was that he may, in fact, have possessed a true “photographic memory,” scientifically referred to as “eidetic memory.” Eidetic memory is clinically defined as: “The ability to recollect an image so vividly that it appears to be real.” According to scholar, Annette Kujawski Taylor: “In eidetic memory, a person has an almost faithful mental image snapshot or photograph of an event in their memory.”

According to Herman Heine Goldstine, mathematician and computer scientist who helped develop ENIAC, the world’s first modern electronic digital computers, he claimed that his colleague, John von Neumann, was a genuine “eidetiker” (a person who possesses an eidetic memory). According to Goldstine, the mathematician, von Neumann, was able to recall from memory every book he had ever read. (John von Neumann was one of the scientists who secretly worked on America’s most topsecret endeavor, The Manhattan Project, which succeeded in building the world’s first atomic bombs.)
A scientific investigation published in a 1970 issue of Nature by Harvard vision scientist, Charles Stromeyer III, found that his future wife, Elizabeth, was able to recall poetry written in a foreign language – a foreign language which she did not understand -- years after she had first seen the poem. She remains the only documented person to have passed such a test. If photographic memory truly exists, it would certainly seem to have played a critical role with Ferdinand Demara’s successful medical skills, for example.
But eidetic memory, alone, would not have sufficed for Demara to successfully become a medical surgeon. There were other factors at "Off to England next month," says John. "It's the only chance Jim gets to drive." •••• A man decided that he was going to ride a 10-speed bike from Phoenix to Flagstaff. He got as far as Black Canyon City before the mountains just became too much and he could go no farther.
He stuck his thumb out, but after three hours hadn't gotten a single person to stop. Finally, a guy in a Corvette pulled over and offered him a ride. Of course, the bike wouldn't fit in the car.
The owner of the Corvette found a piece of rope lying by the highway and tied it to his bumper. He tied the other end to the bike and told the man that if he was going too fast, to honk the horn on his bike and that he would slow down. Everything went fine for the first 30 miles. Suddenly, another Corvette blew past them. Not to be outdone, the

Demara also possessed an extraordinarily high I.Q. – another indispensable arrow in his quiver of deceptions. In short, he was an abnormally-skilled quick-learner on top of his photographic memory, all of which empowered him to bring whomever he impersonated, into seeming reality. As a practicing surgeon he was, as one source put it: “Apparently able to memorize necessary techniques from medical and dental textbooks. And then, ingeniously, apply this data with amazing improvised skills.”
Demara was also said to be able to read at an alarming rate of speed – scanning the pages as quickly as he could turn them. This, apparently, all came to fruition when Ferdinand Demara befriended a young medical doctor named Joseph C. Cyr, who was fresh out of medical school from Quebec’s Laval University. Demara secretly obtained copies of all relevant documentations, including high school diplomas, test scores, medical school records and degrees of Dr. Joseph C. Cyr. For Demara, the rest was easy.
In 1951, Demara joined the Canadian Navy as Dr. Joseph Cyr. He was quickly assigned as a trauma surgeon aboard the HMCS Cayuga, a Royal Canadian Navy

The moment of truth came shortly thereafter. Sixteen Korean soldiers were brought on board the HMCS Cayuga and all of them were badly in need of a trauma surgeon – their injuries were so serious that they required immediate medical attention or they would surely die. Adding to the urgency of medical necessity was that there was only one surgeon on board. Dr. Joseph Cyr (Ferdinand Demara in disguise) was quickly summoned.
Arriving on the scene, Demara immediately commanded that these various wounded soldiers be transported quickly into the ship’s operating room and prepped for surgery.
While that was being done, Demara disappeared into his ship’s quarters and proceeded to ‘speed read’ various related medical procedures for each wounded soldier. His alleged photographic memory quickly formed crystal-clear images, along with various surgical techniques, into his brain.
Still parading as Dr. Joseph C. Cyr, Demara emerged from his personal quarters. He would proceed to astound the world with his uncanny medical accomplishments – of

which he had no prior physical experience at such a high level of surgical intervention. One by one, Demara attended the dying. Each with uncanny skill and success.
On one soldier he removed a lung after a bullet had pierced through his chest cavity. In another, it only took him 10 minutes to delicately and skillfully extract a bullet that was lodged only a quarter of an inch from the patient’s heart. Through sixteen consecutive major operations, Demara, incredibly, attended each trauma case, suturing critical wounds and performing complicated chest surgeries and other major trauma procedures. In essence, Demara – posing as a real trauma surgeon – successfully saved the lives of the sixteen wounded soldiers. All of whom never suffered any negative postsurgical complications.

Explore Space @ Your Library/The Great Eclipse and Palomar Telescope – The Escondido Public Library invites the community to attend two space-themed events for adults and families this August: The Great American Eclipse 2017, on Tuesday, August 1, and Palomar Telescope: Bridge to the Stars on Tuesday, August 22. Both events run from 6–7:30pm, in the Turrentine Room on the second floor. On August 21, the continental United States will experience a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1979. Astronomy hobbyists and expert photographers, Les and Mary Anderson, have been photographing eclipses for more than 38 years. They will present The Great American Eclipse 2017, on Tuesday, August 1 at 6pm to explain how to safely view and photograph the event. Mr. Anderson is President of the Southern California Association of Camera Clubs, which oversees the Photographic Arts Building in Balboa Park, and Mrs. Anderson is the Vice President of Programs.
ly Ferdinand Demara in disguise – reached heroic proportions in the Canadian newspapers, the real Dr. Joseph C. Cyr, who was practicing in New Brunswick, Canada, became increasingly perplexed.
An investigation followed and it was found that both men who shared the same name (Dr. Joseph C. Cyr), also shared the exact same years in attending the same high school, medical college and, in fact, both had identical test scores and passing grades on all medical exams, on exactly the same years.
It became obvious to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (which are both a federal and national police force in Canada) that one of these two men had to be an imposter. Demara’s heroic life-saving surgeries aboard the Royal Canadian destroyer, the HMCS Cayuga, had made such media headlines that it seemed readily apparent to the Royal Mounties that Demara had to be the ‘real’ Dr. Joseph C. Cyr.
Experts have said such an undertaking by the imposter, Ferdinand Demara, was tantamount to asking a Neanderthal to operate a presentday laptop computer.
Fortunately, the authorities uncovered the entire charade, thus preventing any faux pas arrest of any sort. The great imposter, Ferdinand Demara, would be exposed as a complete fake doctor.

Escondido Writers Group Meets Monthly at Library - Escondido Writers Group meets at the Escondido Public Library on Tuesday, August 1, from 1–4pm, in the Turrentine Room. Even Capt. James Plomer on board the HMCS Cayuga, refused at first to accept the fact that Dr. Joseph C. Cyr was being impersonated by a charlatan (Ferdinand Demara) on board his ship. Especially after the ship’s captain had personally witnessed Demara’s successful surgical talents under wartime pressure.
Also, the fact that Demara had treated Capt. Plomar’s infected tooth was of no help in convincing Plomar that Demara was – in reality -- not the true Dr. Joseph C. Cyr.
The further allegations that Demara was not even a real doctor at all, seemed too outlandish for the warship Captain to buy into – again, especially after witnessing Demara’s amazing surgical skills with his own eyes.
The fact that Demara (posing as Dr. Joseph Cyr) had actually saved the lives of sixteen wartime soldiers; received official Canadian commendations, and had already won the loyalty of his shipboard mates – even after being exposed as a fake doctor – the Royal Canadian Navy chose not to press charges against Ferdinand Demara, allowing him to return to the United States.

For these charges of desertion, Demara would serve 18 months in the Naval Disciplinary Barracks at San Pedro, California.
Demara would continue to masquerade as other elite personas, adding a remarkable – yet criminal – legacy to his dubious resume.
Back in the United States he proceeded to obtain personal records and identities of others, such as when he assumed the persona of a Dr. Benjamin Jones and worked as an assistant warden in a Texas prison in 1955.
His celebrity and exposure from the Canadian Royal Navy flap in major newspapers clipped at his heels, making his identity thefts more difficult. In 1957, Demara was again arrested in North Haven, Maine. On two occasions he successfully posed as assistant prison warden and deputy warden in two different prisons. When a prisoner recognized him from a LIFE magazine feature story, Demara hot-footed it to Penobscot Bay Island, where he morphed into the identity of Martin Godgart, a high school teacher. From this escapade, Demara would again be uncovered, this time sentenced to six months in prison for impersonating the south central

Insurance agent Shawn Heffernan, 42, of San Diego, was arraigned today on multiple felony grand theft and elder fraud charges. Heffernan was arrested at his residence yesterday after an investigation by the San Diego Regional Fraud Task Force revealed he allegedly defrauded five senior victims out of more than $1.1 million promising investment returns, but spent the victims' money on his own personal expenses including jewelry, rental properties, and a Maserati. Three of Heffernan's victims were seniors. "Heffernan's alleged crimes are reprehensible," said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. "Heffernan violated his fiduciary responsibility when he used his position of trust to take advantage of vulnerable seniors by taking their money and using it to live the high life."
According to investigators, Heffernan initially sold annuity policies issued by legitimate insurance companies, but then convinced clients to surrender their annuities and purchase new ones with different insurance companies, which resulted in him collecting substantial commissions for the new sale, but cost his victims large early surrender penalties. In one case, investigators identified more than $490,000 in early surrender fees for the client and $280,000 in additional commissions collected by the defendant. Evidence revealed Heffernan allegedly convinced victims to cash out their annuities or invest additional funds into vaguely defined investments. Heffernan then deposited the money into a person-

We called him out for misrepresenting a bond issue . . . we called him out for manipulating the board of directors and, to be fair, we called out the board of directors for hiring him in the first place. A little old weekly newspaper like us was able to ferret out information on Mr. Covert that, had the board known, would have caused them to not hire him in the first place. The board had plenty of money
al bank account and spent it on his living expenses. If a client requested to withdrawal money from their investment, Heffernan used money taken from new investors to satisfy the earlier investors.
"This defendant took advantage of some of the most vulnerable in our community, stealing their money and leaving them high and dry for his own personal gain," said San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan. "This prosecution is a great example of our office's commitment to fighting financial elder abuse and helping seniors know how to protect themselves against it."
A team of law enforcement officials from a number of agencies worked on this case, including the investigators from the California Department of Insurance, the U.S. Secret Service, and the San Diego District Attorney's Office. Investigators are concerned Heffernan may have more victims and are urging anyone who did business with Heffernan and believes he may have defrauded them to contact the California Department of Insurance at (858) 6937100.
The criminal complaint includes five felony counts of grand theft, three felony counts of elder fraud, and an aggravated white-collar crime enhancement. If convicted of all charges, Heffernan faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in state prison. Vista Continues Crackdown on Marijuana Shops
Medical marijuana despensaries are having a tough time in Vista. They are forbidden by Vista laws but many still remain open and operate illegally in the city.
to hire a private investigator and they could have vetted Mr. Covert rather easily. We did it. No reason a private investigator couldn’t have done what we did.
The Catholic Hospital brought Covert in to expand their hospital inventory and he did the job, setting up 17 hospitals. Only problem was, apparently the new hospitals he acquired for the organization were all losing money and became a drain on the organizations revenue. Many layoffs developed. It appears Covert saw the writing on the wall and resigned before his board of directors were able to make the decision for him. His hospital group is now in merger talks with Dignity Health; if the merger goes through there would have likely been cuts at the top echelon of staff. This would have likely included Covert. One can only hope that the the door does not hit him square in the backside while he’s on his way out. He’d probably sue.
The Prayer: There is an upscale retirement community located on N. Broadway known as Meadowbrook Village. They have a mighty good restaurant on camputs and I’ve dined there several times. Good friend, Arie de Jong and his weife, Anneke live there; they moved into town because the Ranch was just too much for Anneke.

An employy was cited and officials hauled out over 30 pounds of processed marijuana or concentrates. The shop was at the corner of Vista Village and Civic Center Drives, across the street from Vista Magnet Middle School and Wildwood Park. Vista issued a statement Friday saying that it had received a number of complaints about the dispensary, and that led to Wednesday morning’s raid. BMX Track for Escondido?
North County may have its first BMX venue if things go the way Escondido officials are thinking. For quite some time there was a big push to place a BMX track in Kit Carson Park but after a concerted effort by neighborhood groups that option was abandoned by the city. Instead, they think they have a new location identified. An unused portion of Jesmond Dene Park in northern Escondido offers the potential for a 1-4 acre site. The BMX facility would be privately built and operated. Last week, the City Council took its first step toward updating the park’s master plan to allow for the track.
Several BMX track operators have expressed interest in building a facility in Escondido. One of them is Vince McCurdy, who own BMX tracks in Kearney Mesa and Lakeside. His other tracks have proven successful and he feels certain he would have a similar success in Escondido. He would privately finance and build the facility. and his wife joined us. I noticed his accent and asked, "Is that a Dutch accent I hear?" He answered it was. "Hmmm. Do you happen to know Arie de Jong." "Yah," he said, "I know him pretty good. He's my brudder!"
He told me he and I had met many years ago and he knew me by reputation and that I had managed the radio station for Alan Skuba. He was Arie's bother, Pete DeJong. We had a great conversation and then when the meals arrived he said, "I know Lyle dat you vill join us as we say grace (and all at the table joined hands)." And then I heard probably the most beautiful prayer/saying of grace I had ever heard.
"Allmighty Fadder, ve are happy to be in your presence on dis day . . . along vit Lyle and his Mary, my vife, Rina, and Shirley (the third party at the table). Ve haf been having a good conversation, remembering all the good times and all that you have blessed us vith. Ve remember udder gude people like Alan Skuba, he vas a very good Mayor, and ve remember Lyle, he vas very good on de radio." He continued on with more traditional prayer and closed and we all said Amen. I'm not much for praying and am not very religous, being a farily well known heathen and skeptic (though some of my dearest friends are of the Christian faith . . . including retired Pastor Dick Huls) . . . but I just felt good when I heard that prayer and felt good that he remembered Alan Skuba, and me, and that his prayer was so "one on one" with his God. Most sayinsg of grace I forget. Not this one.

Marine Corps (through my military service as a Radarman in CIC (Combat Information Center) in the Navy and also through my growingup years); anyway, quite a number have thanked me for writing-up the Staff Sergeant Reckless cover story. I can't capture in words how they expressed themselves, but, take my word -- they were very, very moved and honored to see their warrior horse on the cover of The Paper. Hot Dogs: You may not have noticed but winter is over. So is spring. It isnow summertime. Summertime means hot temperatures.
Though it should be painfully obvious it stands to reason that if it’s too hot for you to walk barefoot on the sidewalk then you can bet your flip-flops it’s way too hot for your dog as well.
The pads on their feet feel the hear. They suffer. Maybe more than you or me. But we can whine, complain, cry, scream and hold our breath till we turn blue to demonstrate how uncomfortable we are. Our dogs wouldn’t think of embarrassing us by demonstrating that they are in heavy pain.
It is a scientific fact that dogs can’t talk. At least not in a human language. They can’t say . . .”Hey, pal . . . I love you more than life itself but would it kill you to walk me on the grass instead of this hot sidewalk or street?” In the past week alone I’ve seen at least a half dozen well meaning people who clearly love their dogs, taking Rover out for a walk. Rover didn’t complain but you can bet s/he was hurting.
These lovely people didn’t mean to hurt their dogs . . . it’s just that they don’t realize how hot that paved concrete is and the pain they are causing. Once they are properly educated the dogs will have a much more comfortable life and look forward to even more walks with their most beloved human. End of lecture.

Like a chameleon, he changed guises and looks, adding different hues and colors to his identity palette.
While a monk in the Brothers of Christian Instruction, Demara would eventually found a college in Alfred, Maine, called LaMennais College. Demara was so brilliantly convincing -- together with his high I. Q. -- that he actually got his new college chartered by the State. However, when someone else was appointed to head the new college, Demara left in anger.
The college which was founded on Demara’s idea in 1951 existed until 1959 when it moved to Canton, Ohio, and changed its name in 1960 to Walsh College, now officially known as Walsh University. On November 12, 1959, Ferdinand Demara appeared as himself on the widely-popular television game show, “You Bet Your Life,” hosted by famed comedian, Groucho Marx, a segment which can be viewed today on YouTube. On the “You Bet Your Life” quiz show, Groucho Marx was fascinated at Demara’s ability to successfully fake his skills as a surgical doctor. The conversation proceeded as such:
Groucho: “When you did these surgeries, what did the other doctors think of you? Did they watch you operate?” Demara: “When I was in Hallifax, at the Royal Canadian Navy’s Headquarters, I gave seminars in internal medicine to other doctors!”
Throughout his enigmatic lifetime, Ferdinand Demara and his infamy gained a strange mix of complicated celebrity and notoriety and peculiar acceptance. A most puzzling mixed-bag of public perception, seemingly viewed through prismatic lighting. Demara’s transformations and evasive personalities which he morphed into as easily as one slips on a sports coat, makes it difficult to perceive the real man behind the different masks. He is as elusive as trying to nail down Jell-O.
What was the true motivation behind Ferdinand Demara’s impersonations? Unlike other imposters, he did not seek wealth, power, or any semblance of fortune. None of his impersonations brought large sums of money. Instead, Demara was after an elusive quality of ‘respect.’ He only wished to be ‘somebody’ and, in the process, became many ‘somebodies’ through identity theft. As one source phrased it, “He never seemed to get (or seek) much monetary gain in what he was doing –
just temporary respectability.” That, and the thrill of the chase; the emotional charge of deceiving the keenest minds and tweaking their noses in the process.
Demara, himself, was quoted as saying his motivation was also: “Rascality, pure rascality.” He had a variety of interesting friendships. He had a close relationship with movie actor, Steve McQueen, of whom Demara delivered last rites in November of 1960.
Demara’s own personal physician, Dr. John J. Zane of Anaheim, California, believed Demara to be a ‘pathological liar,’ a clinical term in which a person may actually believe in their own fabrications. This may account for Ferdinand Demara’s intrepid and unswerving confidence and conviction which powerfully convinced others that he was, indeed, the person he was pretending to be. On June 7, 1982, the 6-foot, 350pound Ferdinand Demara died of heart failure and complications from diabetes, the latter of which necessitated the amputation of both his legs. Demara lived in near-anonymity in Orange County, California, where he worked as a Baptist minister, then a visiting chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Anaheim, until illness halted him from being an imposter. During his last days, under the care
of Dr. John J. Zane, his doctor said: “He was about the most miserable, unhappy man I have known. Over the past few weeks, all he said was he wished to die and go to heaven.” History has no shortage of famous imposters, liars, swindlers, and cheats. If anything, this scurrilous cup truly runneth over.
There was Victor Lustig, the con artist who posed as a government official and fraudulently sold the famed Eiffel Tower in France in the 1920s. There was Christopher Rocancourt, the French imposter who masqueraded as a French nobleman, and also as an heir to the Rockefeller family. Let’s not forget Cassie Chadwick, a Canadian woman who successfully defrauded the U. S. banks out of millions of dollars by claiming to be an illegitimate daughter and heiress of Andrew Carnegie. And so the list of great pretenders goes on, seemingly with no end in sight.
However, these past imposters – as brilliantly successful and devious as they were – all were only onedimensional; none had the wide spectrum of devious skills as the multi-talented and deceptive imposter, Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Jr.

Suddenly, with comparison, all other imposters fade away as only wisps of smoke. They all had only one string to their bow. One hue to their palette. Only one path to tread.
Demara’s exploits were simply beyond the reach of any other. Who else could have been a successful trauma surgeon performing major operations; taught other doctors in internal medicine at seminars; founded a college; taught at the university level; been a lawyer, a civil engineer, prison wardens, sheriff’s deputy, Trappist monk, editor, cancer research scientist, childcare expert, zoology graduate, dean of a college, and so on and so forth? Forging transcripts and personal documents, he became the universal man, in a manner of speaking.
Yet, such villains, such criminals, should never be idolized nor romanticized. What they did was corruption on the highest personal level; prostitution of ideals and human decency; predatory acts against innocent victims. Nonetheless, Ferdinand Waldo Demara, Jr., simply boggles the human mind.
He occupies a notorious center stage, spotlighted alone, as truly the Great Imposter.

Carlsbad Varsity Lancer Dancers Offer Scholarships to Kids Dance Camp Elementary and middle school kids who love to dance, or aspire to try out for dance or cheer squads in the future, are invited to brush up on their dance skills this summer with the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team. The 12-time National Champion Lancer Dancers will be holding a Junior Lancer Dancer summer camp from August 15th through 18th at Carlsbad High School from 9am to noon each day. The team will be offering scholarships to qualified families to attend their Junior Lancer Dancer camp. Scholarships will be awarded based on HUD guidelines for low income families in San Diego County. Families that do not qualify can attend the summer camp for a donation of $125. "We believe all children should be able to take dance classes, no matter what their income level is," says Rachel Whitehead, the team's Scholarship Coordinator. "We want to share our passion for dance with community youth that may not have the same opportunities that we have."
Spending time with these teenage role models will help Junior Lancer Dancers gain selfconfidence, improve technique and learn how to develop a winning attitude. Dance camp also is a great way to stay fit, make new friends and just have fun. Camps are tailored for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers ages 5 to 14. As your Assemblywoman, I oppose tax increases, which is why I voted against extending cap-and-trade, a huge regressive tax on the working men and women of this state.
Though cap-and-trade fees generate billions for California’s general fund, there is little evidence of any positive environmental impact. Under the program, caps are placed on greenhouse gas emissions by industries, such as oil refineries and energy producers, which pay fees on emissions that exceed those caps. Though the intent is to create incentives for industry to invest in new and cleaner technologies, the fees are usually passed through, largely removing the incentives by forcing consumers to pay the additional costs. Like the recent gas tax increase and extensive changes to the Board of Equalization, last week’s cap-andtrade vote to extend the program’s expiration date from 2020 to 2030 was rushed through with little debate or input from those most affected, including California’s small businesses. These costs will be added to the 12 - 20 cent per gallon gas/diesel tax going into effect this November. On the other hand, smaller businesses will see out-of-state and foreign competitors that don’t have to worry about cap-and-trade undercut their prices, forcing them into bankruptcy or out of California. Regrettably, California’s small businesses and its hard working taxpayers, many with the least ability to pay, will be saddled with years of massive tax increases as a result of last week’s cap-and-trade vote.

Hair Follies
Hair runs in our family.
Dad was mostly in sales until about age 35 when he decided to go to barber school back in Omaha, Nebraska. I think he saw how successful mom was with her in-home beauty shop and decided he’d like to do that as well.
Off to barber school he went - spent the time and training and he became a barber. He barbered until he was 90 years of age . . . and would have barbered until he passed away, one week prior to his 92nd birthday, had he not have had to stop barbering to take care of my mom, who had developed Alzheimer’s. (Mom had run her beauty shop till age 86 before she passed away at age 88.
It’s a fine and noble profession, the hair business. Made a very comfortable living for mom and dad and thanks to them, we were able to inherit a few baubles, bangles, bead, money and a house on the Caloosahatchee River in N. Fort Myers, Florida (which has since been sold).

In 1864, Johnson, as a War Democrat and Southern Unionist, was a logical choice as running mate for Lincoln, who wished to send a message of national unity in his re-election campaign; their ticket easily won. When Johnson was sworn in as vice president in March 1865, he gave a rambling speech, after which he secluded himself to avoid public ridicule. Six weeks later, the assassination of Lincoln made him president.

In Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 reelection bid, southern U.S. Sen. Andrew Johnson was chosen to be vice president in an effort to heal the country after a long Civil War. Johnson was from Tennessee had stayed loyal to the Union – the only southern legislator to do so.
Johnson, who was born Dec. 29, 1808, in poverty in Raleigh, N.C., served in more city, state and federal offices than any other U.S. politician. At a young age, his father apprenticed him to a tailor, but he ran away, heading west. He worked in a number of frontier towns before settling in Greeneville, Tenn. Johnson was basically illiterate before learning how to read from his wife. He got his first taste of politics as Greeneville alderman and then mayor before being elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1835. Johnson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843, where he served five two-year terms. Then in 1857, he was elected governor of Tennessee by the state legislature, and then served as governor before being elected U.S. senator.
Johnson was elected vice president as Lincoln’s running mate, and after Lincoln’s assassination, he became the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869.
President Johnson favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union. However, his plans did not give protection to the former slaves, and that put him into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives. The first American president to be impeached, he was acquitted in the Senate by one vote. In his congressional service, he sought passage of the Homestead Bill, which was enacted soon after he left his Senate seat in 1862. As Southern slave states, including Tennessee, seceded to form the Confederate States of America, Johnson remained firmly with the Union. Johnson was the only sitting senator from a Confederate state who did not resign his seat upon learning of his
Johnson implemented his own form of Presidential Reconstruction … a series of proclamations directing the seceded states to hold conventions and elections to re-form their civil governments. When Southern states returned many of their old leaders, and passed Black Codes to deprive the freedmen of many civil liberties, Congressional Republicans refused to seat legislators from those states and advanced legislation to overrule the Southern actions. Johnson vetoed their bills, and Congressional Republicans overrode him, setting a pattern for the remainder of his presidency.
Johnson opposed the 14th Amendment, which gave citizenship to former slaves. In 1866, Johnson went on an unprecedented national tour promoting his executive policies, seeking to destroy his Republican opponents. As the conflict between the branches of government grew, Congress passed the Tenure of Office Act, restricting Johnson’s ability to fire Cabinet officials. When he persisted in trying to dismiss Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, he was impeached by the House of Representatives, and narrowly avoided conviction in the Senate and removal from office. After failing to win the 1868 Democratic presidential nomination, Johnson left office in 1869. Returning to Tennessee after his presidency, Johnson sought political vindication, and gained it in his eyes when he was elected to the U.S. Senate again in 1875, making Johnson the only former president to serve in the Senate. He died just months into his term. While some admire Johnsons strict constitutionalism, his strong opposition to federally guaranteed rights for African Americans is widely criticized. He is regarded by many historians as one of the worst presidents in American history. In 1942, Hollywood filmed a biography of Johnson, “Tennessee Johnson,” starring Van Heflin and Ruth Hussey.

while visiting friends in Oceanside, a group of U. S. Marines stopped me on the street and shook my hand. I honestly don't know how to react on such occasions, so I exhibited my patented blank face and looked down. These Marines are very insightful; they noticed my inability to reciprocate as I was -- at the moment -- very, very emotionally-moved at being in their presence, as I once was on a combat ship when I served under a Carrier Strike Force Battle Group which supported them with ship missilelaunches and aviation firepower and, sometimes, bringing them on board.

Summer Basketball
I’ve watched a lot of basketball this summer. Four grandchildren, a second grader, fourth grader, and two high school freshmen are playing. As you can imagine, the skill level and competitiveness varies widely. So does the teamwork. At the lower levels, each team has one, maybe two, good players. They get most of the rebounds, take most of the shots and score most of the points. When they get double teamed, or “trapped” in basketball language, they look for the other good player, even if teammates are closer. The second grader, the only girl on her team, noticed this right away. “The boys won’t pass the ball to me. Coach said to pass the ball.” The fourth grader’s team does a little
The nearly high schoolers have learned how to play as a team. There are still players who try to do it by themselves, but most understand they are stronger as a team. They pass the ball, even to girls, and are willing to give up a shot if someone has a better “look” at the basket.
The Bible talks about Teamwork. Paul saw his place on the team when he wrote, “The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers….” (1 Corinthians 3:8-9 NIV). In Romans, he wrote, “so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others” (Romans 12:5 NIV). Jesus set the standard for team work when he told his disciples, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:30 NLT). Later, praying for all believers, he prayed that “all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21 NIV). Life may or may not be like basketball, but it is true that both go better when we are part of a team, not trying to do it all by ourselves.

San Marcos is home to three dog parks that designate a safe area for your dog to roam off leash. Leashes must be used when walking dogs on trails, in parks, or other public spaces.
Safety is the City’s primary concern and dogs that run free in parks and on trails may encounter snakes, opossums, mountain lions or poison oak. Keeping your dog on a leash can also prevent disturbance of wildlife habitat and limit personal liability.

BBQ Teams Descend on Vista
San Diego’s largest BBQ competition, “The Vista BBQ Classic” takes place this Saturday, July 29. For the past eight years, teams have traveled from all over the state to compete for prize money, trophies, and bragging rights. The BBQ teams will descend on historic downtown Vista on Friday afternoon, July 28, to season, smoke, and grill their choice cut of meats for the competition on Saturday. Delicious BBQ tastes, a street fair, and live bands will provide a day of fun for the whole family. Adults can
wrangle a bull, lasso their favorite person, or learn the two-step.
On Friday, from 5-8 pm, the public is invited to a “BBQ Meat n’ Greet” to meet the teams and watch how they cook up their delectable meats for the following day’s competition. This is a great time to see what goes into competition BBQ and to enjoy the downtown area on a Friday night. It’s a great question so last month we decided to find out who our customers are. Do we cater to a certain demographic, is there such a thing as someone who “looks like a Computer Factory customer.” We have been around since 1995 and Nome made the observation that our business and home customers “do seem to be getting a bit older.” “Sure” I said “but that’s a good thing, it only means that our customers tend to stick with us over the years.” “That may be true” countered Nome, “but it’s probably not a good thing if your toughest competition is the “grim reaper.”

One way to look at your customer base is by generation. Folks born before 1945 (the end of WW2) are members of the “Silent generation” or the “Greatest Generation.” That’s the generation that raised Nome, me and the “baby boomers.” We speak their language and fit like a glove with those two generations. Folks born between 1965 and 1981 are known as Generation X. Most business owners and working folks today are “GenXers.” We notice little difference between the “boomers” and “GenXers” and we get along just fine with them too. Demographic analysts describe “Millennials” as those born between 1981 and 2015. Early “Millennials” (1981-91) seem pretty much like the rest of us but those post 1991 “millennials” are a piece of work. “California Millennials.” under 25 years old are particularly scary. The rap on these folks is that they are selfish, lazy not too bright and virtually unemployable. They are victims of a “dumbed down” education system that elevates social consciousness and political correctness over real learning like science and history. It ridicules success, competition, work ethic and traditional values. These millennials grew up in pay-for-play Shwarzenegger/Brown California where everyone is some kind of victim that needs government help. Some curmudgeons live in the hope that most “Millennials” will tumble off a cliff or blunder Aerial Gunner Wings. He was then assigned to a B-24 Liberator Bomber. As a gunner, he completed 30 missions and returned home as the war ended. He married Bonnie Scales on August 10, 1946, and their marriage lasted over 70 years, until his death on July 18, 2017. Bonnie and George had three sons, Michael, Patrick and Timothy; Patrick and Timothy predeceased George; three grandchildren, George, John and Surrey Ann; and four great-grandchildren. George’s sweet spirit will always surround us as we recover from our loss.
