Linda Villanova parked her 12-year old Toyota Corolla two blocks from her home in Vista, CA., grabbed her groceries and trudged toward her rented California bungalow. It had been a long, disturbing day. At work, her boss said the rumors that the restaurant was laying off kitchen help could be true, but hoped it wasn’t, still she needed to be alert that change could happen. Later, at the hospital, the young Asian doctor smiled and assured Linda that Abuela, would be released within the week and the The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

dentist was pleasant, but insistent when she told Linda that both daughters needed braces, that Lilianna would require expensive oral surgery beforehand.

As Linda prepared supper her fears mounted. What if her car broke down? Again. How would she get to work? What if Carlos lost his landscaping job? What if the landlord raised their rent? We need more money, Linda thought. How could she make that happen? Linda had noticed Carlos’ pickup parked on the grass near the garage

when she came into the house. As usual, it was loaded with large bundles of grass trimmings, scrub cuttings and leaves. He’d empty the truck on his way to work tomorrow morning.

After supper, Linda helped the girls with their homework, saw to their baths and tucked them into bed. She had a nagging feeling about the truck as she did the evening dishes and prepared the table for breakfast. She emptied coffee grounds into the big jar so she could spread it on her roses later. Then it hit her. Suddenly, she knew how to make more income.

Smiling, she called, “Carlos, come join me outside, please.” Perplexed, Carlos followed her to his truck. Linda took his hand. “See my new business?” Carlos shook his head. “What do you mean?”

Linda laughed. “Tonight, we’ll lay cardboard on the grass. Tomorrow morning you’ll un-load your truck on it. We’ll add water and lime and stir it every so often. That way the cuttings will decompose faster. Then, we’ll package the compost

A million-dollar business was born at that time. Over the next year, Linda’s Top Soil and Mulch, became a favorite of landscapers, home gardeners, and others. Compost bins soon replaced the brush pile, Linda producing 100 five-pound bags of rich compost a month. Within six months, her daughters had the dental work they needed, and Linda replaced her Corolla with a more serviceable car. Not to be left out, Carlos started his own landscape business, making his rounds in a shiny, new pickup. When abuela passed away, Linda had the resources to return her grandmother’s body to the family cemetery in Bakersfield, thanks to Linda’s inspiration to search for and use her existing resources, those in her own back yard.

NIMBYism is in full cry these days, i.e., a much-needed homeless shelter is shouted down because it’s too close to an elementary school; residents lobby against a neighborhood skate park since, “it would draw undesirable teen agers and gang members to our community;” a low-income housing project is cancelled after local resident’s yell, “Not In My Back Yard.” This article presents a different viewpoint on back yards. Mildred, the church gossip, and selfappointed Monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her extracurricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there WOULD KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING!

Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.

Later that evening Frank quietly parked

solve a problem? Maybe the answer is there, and it may change your life when you find it. *** Rachel Rootes was born and raised in England. She met her husband Stan on a bus in London as he vacationed from his job as a San Diego city bus driver. After a two-year trans-ocean courtship, they married and moved to Mira Mesa near Stan’s parents.

Stan’s father died unexpectedly, forcing the couple to become his mother’s care giver. They moved into her three-bedroom house and soon filled it with the pit-a-patter of four little ones. Reflecting on her present lifestyle Rachel quickly points out it wasn’t financial difficulties alone that caused her to start her herb garden. “Our oldest son, Ralph, suffered terribly from allergies,” she says. “We tried every conceivable remedy. Honey from local bees. Flonase. Any purported cure, no matter how ridiculous, we bought it. Nothing worked. Then one day a neighborhood lady suggested I try mallow. I’d never heard of it.

“I Googled it and found mallow listed as a cure for respiratory complaints. But finding a reliable supply was almost impossible. Finally, after several potential suppliers failed us, I sent off to Ferry and Morse for seeds and planted them in a strip of dirt behind the house. Green shoots came up in 5 days. When they were maybe 4 inches his pickup in front of Mildred's house ... walked home ... and left it there all night. You gotta love Frank!

high, I snipped some and served it as a tea to Ralph. A week later, his symptoms disappeared completely.” This success lit a fire under Rachel. What other herbs did suffering people need? She started researching herbs, and learned that St. John’s Wort, a leafy, green plant was effective in relieving depression. And like mallow, it was hard to come by in the original plant form. She immediately planted three rows behind her house, so she’d have enough to sell at local swap meets and farmer’s markets.

Her research led to Creeping Charlie, an herb known to have a positive effect on a number of maladies from speeding recovery from colds, to treating headaches and as a detoxifier to purge bodies after drug and alcohol use. The demand for these herbs led Rachel to add to her inventory. Soon she sold plantain, an easy-togrow herb, which in tea form soothes infant colic and as a poultice helps reduce the effects of sunburn, rashes and inflammations; and is effective as a hay fever remedy as well. Rachel’s stable of backyard herbs grew quickly. Burdock was next - a spiky herb with roots used in traditional Asian cooking. It is also a tasty medicine to control appetites and build red blood cells. Her biggest seller however became a low-growing herb with an appealing purple flower called Self-Heal,

or All Heal. Its popularity caused Rachel to rent a plot where she could grow it in larger quantities, staggering her planting times so as to always have a fresh crop available.

As the name implies, Self-Heal is used to solve many health challenges from skin rashes to sun burn, high blood pressure to athlete’s foot. Rachel plans to double her production of this herb.

So, you ask, how much money has Rachel realized from her backyard herb garden? This past twelve months she reports a net earning a little north of $39,000 - after deducting swap meet and farmer’s market booth rentals. Not bad for a fun, part-time business. But, Rachel doesn’t judge her success by money alone. She’s prouder of the number of people she’s helped. “I wanted my herbs to help people the way mallow helped my son when I started my garden. That’s still my intent.” *** Donald Nguyen is a Vietnamese refugee who migrated to California shortly after the fall of Saigon. In a hospital, a bunch of the relatives gathered in the waiting room where a family member lay, gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber. "I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the BRAIN."

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, 'How much will a brain cost?' The doctor quickly responded, “$5,000 for a Democrat's brain and $200 for a Republican's.”

The moment turned awkward. Some of the Democrat relatives actually had to 'try' to not smile, avoiding eye contact with the Republican relatives.

door. When the plants were 4 to 5 inches high, he’d sell them to nurseries. One day at lunch, Nguyen overheard a conversation between a Chinese cook and a restaurant owner. The gist was, unless they could find a more reliable, cheaper supplier of Chinese vegetables the restaurant would close. Nguyen asked a few questions, then hurried to Home Depot and purchased several large pots, took then to his apartment, filled them with dirt and planted Bok Choy (pok choy, or bok choi.) In another pot he planted kale. Six weeks later when these plants matured, Nguyen snipped them carefully, wrapped them in white paper and made his way to the restaurant. They gladly paid him his asking price and ordered more for the following week.

With his profits, Nguyen bought more pots, soil and seed, planting bok choy and fast-growing kale. Using a computer at the library, he located several community gardens and visited them. He found eager growers of Chinese vegetables who sold him their fresh choy sum, (vegetable heart), snow peas, Chinese radishes, zucchini and baby corn. Nguyen in turn sold these to restaurants. Thus, a thriving business was born.

At the meeting, Hightower announced in his fact-of-the-matter way the financial condition of house. Three sober drunks had purchased the three-bedroom, singlestory house with the idea of providing alcoholics a relatively stressfree environment and time needed to recover. The owners paid the mortgage, the utilities and salaries of the manager and assistant manager. These funds were supposed to come from the fees the ten house members paid - $200 or $300 a month – based on need. Social Security and insurance company pay outs were still a year or two away. Inevitably, there is many a slip between cup and lip. Often, the hoped-for funds from residents did not materialize. This meant funds for groceries, laundry, landscaping and other services had to be raised by the residents.

Kramer was aghast at Hightower’s report. “I came here to sober up, not worry about what and when I’ll eat.” Kramer also bridled at the house rule where every resident had to be up and out by eight o’clock each morning, but he zeroed in on Hightower’s statement that the house would sponsor their usual twice monthly car wash that weekend.

“Hell, every high school service organization, glee club and varsity football team holds car washes. We’re off the main thoroughfare so we don’t get much traffic. How can we compete with high school girls in bikinis when it comes to washing

Man About Town My Time Machine

I've decided to focus at least 20% of my daily activities on inventing a time-travel machine. Once perfected, I'd like to go back to when I was about 35 years old (retaining, of course, all of the vast knowledge I have since accumulated over the ages), and about 50 lbs lighter. (I have zero interest in going back to when I was 18 or so).

I would incorporate the ability to be visible or invisible, my option, so that I could, for example, go back to the time of Hitler and, while invisible, hit him in the face with an axe. Goering, too. And Eichmann. I would go back to the time of Ghengis Khan and ask that he try to be a little nicer and more considerate of his fellow man.

I would also go back and visit some

The man in the sketch is described as a white man, standing 5'10" tall and weighing 160 pounds. He has short black hair and a black beard. The suspect has a light complexion and was able to speak in a Russian sounding language. He was wearing dark color clothing that resembled a uniform.

I would probably spend even more time with my two sons. We had a good father/sons relationship . . . but I could have done even better. I probably should have encouraged them more. Who knows what they might have accomplished? I would go back and listen in on all of the war planning activities . . . on the plans for the Normandy Invasion . . . on the discussions when Harry Truman decided to drop the A-Bomb. So many things I would like to do . . . if only I could hurry up and finish this here invention.

I know! I'll buy a couple bottles of wine and a case of beer and we can all get together this weekend and work on the invention together! And, yes, I'll give each one of you a ride in our time machine.

Show of hands . . . who's coming this weekend? And where do you want to go? And what era? To see whom? Visible or Invisible? Taking orders. First come, first served. I get to be the first to see and visit with Jesus. I'll report back to each of you. Colby’s back!

“Orange trees.”

“What’s on those orange trees?”

Hightower was tired of the game. “Oranges, ass hole. What’s your point?”

“To quote the Bible. ‘The fields are white with harvest, the workers they are few.’ Or in this case, the trees are filled with gold. All we have do is harvest them.” “Whatta ya mean?” This from Hightower.

“We knock on doors throughout the community asking home owners to donate their oranges. We even give ‘em a receipt for tax purposes. We pick the oranges, bag ‘em a Baker’s Dozen to a sack. Sell ‘em for a buck. Two bags for a buck seventyfive. Make sense?”

had earned $887.00 for the house, and those who sold, split $315.00. The following two weekends they did equally as well. This again points out the axiom, have a problem? Look in your own back yard for solutions first. Find a need, then fill it. In this case, the Sober Living facility needed money, and the general public needed oranges (although they might not have known it). When these two forces – need and solution - come together the payoff is great. Mr. Wayne Kramer wasn’t finished showing the power of using available resources. The day after Thanksgiving, he approached Childers.

Neither Hightower or Childers spoke.

“Christmas is coming. Let’s go on a field trip to the mountains. The resident tree trimmer we have here getting sober, takes his climbing gear. He cuts mistletoe from the trees. Those on the ground put a sprig or two in bags with a cute saying, like A Kiss for Christmas. We sell it for a buck. Whatcha think?”

Childers nodded. “And a child shall lead us.” *** The next day, house members picked and sacked oranges, selling them at busy street corners during Friday’s drive time. Saturday afternoon, they ran out of oranges. They

learned to sew, but their ability to practice was hindered by a shortage of cloth. Enter Mr. Kramer. He sketched out several simple Christmas designs – a jumping elf, a prancing reindeer, a Christmas tree with a large star on top. He then visited a yardage shop and got a donation of 100 yards of Christmasthemed material. The ladies sewed this into the designs Kramer had drawn up. Another group sold these at free booths in malls and shopping centers, raising over $2,000 for the home. Again, the old adage. Use available resources – the stuff in your own back yard – and start where you now stand to fill a need. Often riches come to those who see opportunity in the mundane. *** Claire Wagers is 87 years young. She still lives in the house she and her husband Henry built in 1969. Henry passed away in 1990. They had no children, so when Claire learned that Henry’s pension from his 40 years as an assembler at an automotive plant would be cut in half, Claire knew it was up to her to find a way to replace her lost income.

The first thing she did was to review her living quarters. Her home had three bed rooms. She used one as a sewing room, slept in one, with one virtually unused. She guessed she could rent it out, but that seemed intrusive, as she enjoyed having the girls over for bridge one day a week. Plus, many

Inside the house, Claire took out paper and pen and made a list of all the ways she could increase her income. Planting a garden and selling the vegetables did not seem practical. months earlier. What had he wanted? Something about raising fish.

Claire got up and went to the window. The restaurant owner’s car was parked in his driveway. She grabbed her pad and went outside. When she was close enough to see the phone number clearly, she jotted it down. Back inside, she dialed the number and left a brief message and her number as the computerized voice told her to do. She hung up and returned to her list. Since renting her room was not an option, maybe she could sign up for Airbnb but that too seemed impractical. How about renting out space in her yard for RV’s to park? She’d heard there was a need for that.

After lunch, Claire called her bridge-playing ladies and confirmed they were coming as usual on Wednesday. When her phone rang, she figured it was Sarah telling her what goodies she’d bring to bridge. Instead, it was her neighbor, the Chinese restaurant owner. Was she interested in renting a spot in her yard where his son could install a water-filled vat to grow fish in? “Yes,” she said. “In fact, my water hydrants are still in place and they work just fine.” *** The Universe abhors a vacuum. The amazing thing is, once we recognize a need and seek to fill it, it’s almost as if the Gods agree and align the stars so that everything needed falls into place. Reflecting back in time when I was 16 years old and had been driving for three years, my dad sent my mother and me to a neighboring town 60 miles away to pick up a new car for our dealership from a like brand dealer. The trip was on a good safe paved road in good weather during a nice time of day, with little traffic. My mother was semi dozing in the passenger seat when she remarked to me and I quote, “Step on it. We have to get there.” Looking down at the speedometer we were cruising at a ‘wide open speed” of 100 mph! That’s a true story. I grew up in a speed loving family.

It was still in the forties after World War II when automobile manufacturers were still playing catch up. Most cars were very prosaic and were equipped with the bare necessities and austere design. This week’s “Yesterday Car” was an exception. Built by one of America’s Independents it was one of only 2000 built. Powered by an overhead valve and in line six cylinder with seven main bearings it was one of two companies that built such a tough, long life motor. The other was Rolls Royce. Needless to say, both of these engines were extremely smooth running and provided good performance. Name this rare convertible, which was built for only one year.

Helping Our Local Citrus Economy

California's fresh-market citrus producers are working hard to prevent being affected by a disease called Huanglongbing, (HLB) or citrus greening disease. The disease, for which there is no known cure, is spread by an invasive pest known as the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), an aphid-sized insect that first appeared in our state in 2008.

Since our region is a high producer of citrus, this is a concern for our growers and our local economy. Disease symptoms include asymmetrical yellow mottling on leaves, hard fruit that is bitter and doesn’t ripen, along with excessive fruit drop. The disease is devastating. In just 10 years Florida has lost approximately 162,000 citrus acres. It is estimated that 90% of Florida citrus acres are infected. Mexico is heavily impacted, and the disease is quickly spreading in Texas. Unfortunately, with the ACP insect present in 24 California Counties, our $3.3 billion citrus industry could easily suffer the same fate.

HLB has now been found in over 500 residential citrus trees in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside Counties, placing the nearby citrus groves and nurseries of Riverside and San Diego Counties at serious risk.

Given the importance of the citrus industry to our state and region, I and several Assembly colleagues urgently requested an additional appropriation of $10 million to combat the psyllid and the spread of HLB. I’m pleased to report that the request was granted and the additional funding was included in the budget that was signed into law on June 27.

Thanks to foresight and funding from growers and state and federal governments, research will continue to find a cure and to breed new citrus varieties that will be able to resist this terrible threat to ornamental citrus trees and to California’s vital citrus industry.

caused quite a bit of public excitement -- all of which caused commotion and the need for police intervention to keep public excitement, etc., from getting out of control in downtown Escondido! Is this funny rumor true and can you verify the colorful details? Editor’s Note: Reasonably close to an accurate account. This was not, however, ‘Cruisin Grand,” it was just “Cruisin’” The location was East Valley Parkway with much of the activity taking place in front of the old Escondido Village Mall.

Yes, I managed KOWN Radio which was located in the mall. But I wasn’t the one who promoted it on the air; it was the brain child of the late Clip Helps, our Program Director. He got the idea from the movie “American Graffiti.” He talked about it on the air and thought we’d get a dozen or more cars to respond. We got hundreds! Then Lieutenant John Wilson, since reteired, and a long time friend, stopped by my house and invited me to ride along and see what was happening. I spent the rest of the evening with him. Some party-goers were spraying shaving cream on the windshields of motorists - a definite safety hazard. There were several arrests.

We all truly love your weekly Thursday magazine and we are loyal readers who can't wait to see the next cover story!

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

Whatever your middle name, you're doing a helluva good job, pardon my French! Keep those cover stories coming!

In those days, the office of President was elected by the U.S. Senate. After some 38 ballots in a close election, Burr’s presidential run for President against Thomas Jefferson lost by one vote, relegating Burr to the office of Vice President, which, in those days, second-place finishers were relegated.

From Patrick Flannigan and friends in Escondido, California.

Editor’s Note: Thank YOU for a most entertaining Letter to the Editor. Brought back some fun memories.

Burr blamed Hamilton for his defeat. In business, It would be among the first of a long line of insults and disagreements between Burr and Hamilton. The Forgotten Man: Aaron Burr

If you were asked who the third Vice President of the United States was, few would know it was Aaron Burr. Wait a minute -- didn’t he shoot and kill our first Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel?

Hamilton prominently takes his place in history as founder of what today is the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Mint, and with his picture on the $20 bill. Conversely, Aaron Burr’s bio is found in very few school history books, primarily because of his 1807 duel with founding father Hamilton.

Editor’s Note: True story. It was written by our Friedrich Gomez. Cover story was “Escondido’s Hidden Treasures.” You can find it in our archives at: https://issuu.com/awodigitaledition/docs/the_paper_04-2017?e=2076238/47502876

The third big question we were bantering around at Vinz's outdoor patio area is, what does the "E" of your middle name stand for? Guesses so far have been: Edward or variation of that, Eric, Ethan, Earl, Evan, and Emmett. Be careful with your answer because we all have a friendly money pool on the correct answer! Editor’s Note: lyle eugene davis; my mom, in a fit of creativity, named me lyle eugene davis and my baby brother . . . eugene lyle davis. Dad never said a word.

Then the two men became founding bankers. Burr founded the Bank of Manhattan Company, which today is JP Morgan-Chase. Hamilton founded rival Bank of New York, making them bitter political and business competitors. It’s the fame duel that caused Burr to be banished to near historical obscurity. What caused the duel is a matter of conjecture. One of the reasons could be Hamilton’s vicious rumors. The two men were often invited to dinner parties hosted by leading New York politicians, businessmen and even each other. During those years, Burr was widowed and lived with his daughter and husband. Hamilton reportedly suggested at a social gathering that Burr committed incest with his daughter. Enraged, the Vice President challenged the Treasury Secretary to a duel in Weehawken, N.J., as dueling was illegal in New York State. Hamilton was mortally wounded, dying a day later. Hamilton’s death destroyed Burr’s political, social, and business career and standing. Years later, Burr traveled west to embark upon what was an alleged attempt to form a new nation, for which he was charged with treason, but later was acquitted.

The late Lt. Bob Wolford called out the department in riot gear and they walked the entire parking lot of the Mall. I thought that was an overreaction and unnecessary.

Also, while eating at Vinz restaurant & bar, we also heard the wild rumor that Vinz Wine Bar & Restaurant once had a real 1920s style speakeasy underneath a portion of its present establishment, which has since been covered over! This is too good to be true and we heard you had written about this in your weekly magazine, The Paper. Can you tell us what issue that was in and if it can still be read online?

He was admitted to the bar of New York in 1782.Burr was twice elected to the New York state Assembly, was appointed State Attorney General, then he was chosen as a U.S. Senator.

Burr spent the remainder of his life in obscurity practicing law in New York, dying in 1836.

Burr had an illustrious war record, serving during the Revolutionary War under Gen. Benedict Arnold in the Quebec expedition. Burr distinguished himself in that battle earning a place on Gen. George Washington’s staff. But, after only two weeks, he asked for a transfer back to the battlefield.

For an interesting look at Burr’s life in historical novel form, try Gore Vidal’s “Burr.”

Tom Morrow's books are available at Amazon.com in soft-cover or via Kindle E-mail.

In battle, Burr saved an entire brigade, which included Hamilton, from capture after the British landed on Manhattan. Evidently miffed because Burr had resigned from his staff, Washington did not commend Burr for his heroic actions. This led to an eventually estrangement between the two men. In 1777, Burr was promoted to lieutenant colonel, assuming command of a regiment. During the harsh winter at Valley Forge, Burr led a small unit guarding an isolated pass. He drove back an attempted mutiny by troops who wanted to escape the Valley Forge winter. In 1779, Burr had to leave the Army due to bad health, but he remained active in the War. He was assigned by Washington to perform occasional intelligence missions. During one of those missions, Burr rallied a group of Yale students in New Haven, Conn., to aid a small group of soldiers in a skirmish with the British. This action repelled the enemy’s advance, forcing them to retreat.

The primary planning document for spending on tangible items is called the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget. This budget is my favorite because it validates current needs and anticipates future needs for items like new 619.299.7012.

sidewalks, playgrounds, street lights, crosswalks, public art work and bike lanes. There are also investments in technology items like servers and software that make our city services more efficient.

Funding to invest in these public projects is cobbled together from a variety of sources including development fees, gas taxes, grants and project loans. Development fees are also known as “impact fees” and are collected for specific purposes from every new construction project in the city. The concept

1. Negotiate A Better Mortgage Rate With HARP - If you’re a homeowner born before 1985 and you want to save yourself thousands of dollars this year, there’s a government program that you might be able to take advantage of called HARP. The Home Affordable Refinance Plan (HARP) could help hundreds of thousands of Americans reduce their monthly payments by as much as $3,500 in their first year. In order to qualify for HARP you’ll need good or excellent credit, so if you don’t have a very good credit rating then this probably isn’t for you. If lowering your payments, paying off your mortgage faster, and having an extra $290 a month in HARP savings would help you, then this could be the easiest money savings tip you take. 2. Install A Home Alarm System - This money saving idea is also for senior homeowners, so if you’re a renter you can skip this one. Did you know that homes without security systems are 2.5 times more likely to be targeted by burglars and intruders? But installing a home alarm system isn’t just to stop burglars and intruders, it can also save you big money year after year. A house

behind these fees is that every time a new project is built in Escondido, there is an impact caused by the additional people. More people means more traffic and therefore a need for road expansion and maintenance and more use of public safety services. As our city grows, we need to maintain quality of life standards. alarm will save you money on your homeowners insurance policy (which is generally mandatory if you own a home). In fact, on average installing a home alarm system will give homeowners a 10-20% discount on their insurance by having a high functioning home alarm system installed. The good news is that these home alarm companies are pretty desperate for customers at the moment so you can get a good deal. For instance, one of the best alarm system companies – ADT is currently offering over $850 in free equipment plus a $100 Visa gift card with $99 Installation and purchase of monitoring service. That means you basically get a free alarm system for over a year, just by paying a $99 fee. It’s also really important seniors have a high functioning alarm system installed so that they can get medical aid in the case of a life threatening emergency, especially for those who live alone. 3. Our Rightful Heritage

There is always an appropriate time to declare our freedoms, and especially now in July. The First Amendment highlights our basic freedoms – of the press, religion, and speech. It also states that Congress will not exercise control over these freedoms, implying that any elected representatives, including the President, cannot.

We, as citizens, regard such freedoms as our right to say what we feel, believe what we want, and write as we wish, always taking into consideration any dishonest, immoral, or profane comments. We shall not be threatened by our elected

officials to silence us, degrade us, deny us, or even restrict us with any office of government such as the FBI, CIA, or IRS. However, political officials don’t always follow these principles. At times, they can become insecure, arrogant, paranoid, and self-serving, using their power to deny us these freedoms. When a nation of citizens allows such abuses, it deserves to be ruled by an autocrat or dictator. Such has happened many times in the history of nations. Hopefully, we are responsible in protecting our freedoms of speech, religion, and the press. We could well heed the words of Martin Niemoller, a German pastor in the days of Nazi Germany, who watched the subtle process of losing freedom. He wrote these prophetic words, “First they came for the Socialists, then they came for the Jews, then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.” Any stifling of our basic freedoms by any person or group is a threat to all of us. Balanced Budget Approved

The Vista City Council has approved a $130 million budget for the fiscal year which began July 1. The city budget has two main sections, the Operating Budget, which covers the day to day work of the city, such as providing fire and law enforcement services, parks and recreation, and other core services, and the Capital Improvement Program, which covers major construction projects. The spending plans have been developed to meet the needs of residents and businesses of the City, as well as City

One man, unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, “Why is the Democrat's brain so much more than a Republican's brain?” The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, “It's just a standard pricing procedure. We have to price the Republican's brains a lot lower because – they're used.”

What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park.

Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress - $5,000. Tux rental - $100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks.

A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Two pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes - one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache... You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes. No wonder men are happier! NICKNAMES

Last week we began a discussion on why Microsoft continues to cause serious problems for users with “automatic updates.” Lost data, corrupt OS (operating systems), applications that no longer work, lost drivers, crashed PCs and expensive repairs are common problems for millions of Windows users every time Microsoft initiates a Windows “update cycle.” Users with Win7/8 PCs have the option to turn off the automatic updates but Microsoft has removed that option from Windows10. Many users that previously accepted the “free upgrades” from Win7/8 to Win10 are now backtracking to their previous OS to avoid Microsoft’s automatic update problems. Unfortunately

there are hundreds of amazing cruises at great prices to be found online. Is there any better way to celebrate life than to venture out at sea? Cruises are wonderful with their all-inclusive travel options where you get to sit back, have a drink or two for free, soak up the midday sun and enjoy some high-class cuisine along with various live music performances. Cruise lines offer a huge variety of discounts for senior citizens, and this includes some of the most well-known companies like Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean, offering exclusive deals to citizens over the age of 55. You will be able to get a cruise deal anywhere in the world, be it the Caribbean or even the icy Alaska. Keep in mind that not all cruises have discounts, so it is best to check with the specific cruise company. 4. Get a Lower Auto Insurance Rate - You might think you’re already paying a low auto insurance rate, but recent research shows that only 5% of Americans over the age of 55 are paying less than $50 per month for car insurance. If you’re currently paying more than $50 per month, and have had no accidents or tickets in the past two years, you can probably secure a much lower car insurance rate. The best way to do that is to compare quotes from multiple insurers – let them compete for your business. In fact, there’s a new website that allows you to do just that – it’s called Best Quotes Auto Insurance. Once you fill out the form on their website they’ll provide you with multiple quotes you can choose from. If you’re still not satisfied, you can always call up the major car insurance companies and let them know you’re looking for better offers and that you’re a senior citizen. 5. Save on Medical Costs - Healthcare is an essential part of human life, and the costs of doctors and the right treatments add up more and more as we age. Most retirees need to take some type of medication, so it’s only right that you should be getting the most out of your medical insurance. By

To understand why Microsoft is willing to put users through so much pain, one needs to understand Microsoft’s current situation, problems and strategies as it relates to home users and small businesses. The World is turning away from local processing and applications in favor of Internet or cloud based applications and computing. Microsoft’s core business has always been the sale of PC OS and applications for “local” processing. PCs are slowly being replaced by Internet connected devices that are able to do everything in the cloud that any PC can do locally.

Microsoft’s previous bosses Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer were able to hang on to Microsoft’s dominance in PC applications and OS through shear inertia but Microsoft long ago stopped being a cool or innovative place to work. As a bloated bureaucracy, they failed to recognize the significance of the Internet and mobile computing and communications until long after more agile companies had established a foothold. Even with the advantages of having the OS that ran 90% of the World’s PCs, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Bing were crushed by newcomer Google in the contest to be the leading Internet browser (Chrome) and search engine (Google Search). Late to recognize the importance of “smart phones,” Microsoft bumbled and stumbled losing billions in their abortive attempts to crash the party with the twin disasters of Windows 8 and the purchase of Nokia's smart phone business. Instead of growing,

working with the best insurance company for your needs you can be sure to have the best coverage for the cheapest prices. Some insurers will send seniors a discount card that you can show when paying for prescriptions. Just remember to check with your local pharmacy to see what discounts are available to you, because discounts might change depending on location. Many seniors may be able to get extra benefits and don’t even know they’re available. You can also check if you are eligible to get vision, dental, hearing or prescription drug coverage included in your plan. 6. Get Paid To Take Online Surveys - Let’s face it, a lot of us have a bit of extra time on our hands after we retire. What if you could get paid a little bit of extra pocket money just for taking a few online surveys? Would you do it? There’s a new website called Survey Junkie that allows you to do just that. You provide them with a bit of information about yourself and they’ll match you up with to surveys that you can complete for big brands. You then earn rewards and virtual points that you can redeem for Paypal or eGiftcards. You won’t make a ton of money doing this, but it could help pay for a few things every month and it’s easy to do. 7. Save on Life Insurance - Unfortunately, as our age increases so do our premiums for life insurance. In fact, typically the premium amount rises 8-10% for every year of age. For senior citizens, rising life insurance policy costs can add up significantly. Many senior citizens also have a hard time qualifying for a new policy once they reach a certain age. The best way to get the cheapest life insurance policy possible is to compare quotes from multiple carriers in much the same way you would do with car insurance, or cell phone plans. Luckily, there’s a new website called LifeInsurance.net that will automatically use your information to find you the best life insurance policy for your needs at much lower prices. 8. Go Shopping - Banana Republic, Kohl’s, Marshall’s and Stein Mart - You might be surprised to learn that a lot of trendy shops give a senior citizens discount. At Banana Republic, if you over 50-years old you can get a 10% discount at stores, simply by asking for it. At Kohl’s on Wednesdays, over

Microsoft Window’s mobile market share actually dropped from over 3.0% to less than 0.5% between 2014 and 2018. With their traditional business shrinking and their inability to gain a foothold in the growing mobile markets, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s latest CEO (2014) developed a new and comprehensive survival strategy for his company. The part that interests us is how this strategy affects home and small business PC users. Windows10 is the key.

Microsoft has ceded the mobile market to Google (Android 80%) and Apple (iOS 12%). Windows mobile is dead. CEO Nadella needed a new plan. Since nearly 90% of Android phone users also have a Windows PC., Microsoft reasoned they could use the Windows OS on PCs to develop “cross platform” applications that they could market to Android and IOS (Apple) users. Microsoft today is busily developing applications that will run on non Microsoft platforms. They want Windows to be able to accept input from the non-Microsoft “Internet Ecosystems,” for example to be able to receive and answer a text message while at your PC without needing to grope for your phone. Google made $80 billion in advertising revenue last year; Microsoft’s advertising revenue was around $5 billion. Google owns the OS and the browser on 80% of the Worlds mobile devices and that puts them in the “catbird seat” for advertising revenue. Additionally, although Windows runs 90% of the World’s PCs, Google’s “Chrome” and “Google search” are the dominant Windows browser and search

60s can get 15% off. And on Tuesdays, outlet stores Marshall’s, Ross will offer up a 10% discount for seniors – though the exact age is determined by each store. Walgreens hold a “Seniors Day” once a month too – which varies by location. Discounts of 20% are available for Rewards card members that are over 55 years old in store, and if you’re shopping online you can get a 10% price reduction. If you are 62 or older, you can get a 10% discount every Tuesday and Wednesday at Dress Barn. And that’s not all, Stein Mart are treating over 55s with their clearance offer. On the first Monday of each month, you can get an extra 20% discount on clearance items. Goodwill gives 10%20% discounts varying by store. Just remember to check with the specific store in your area, as discounts might vary and change without notice. 9. Eating Out - If you don’t feel like cooking be sure to turn to these places for good senior dining deals. From fast food to steak restaurants, our compiled restaurant list will definitely help you make your choice. Keep in mind that deals may vary at participating locations and can change without notice.

engines. That gives Google the inside track on all PC based Internet advertising and tracking data. User data refined through artificial intelligence is the bread and butter of Internet revenue. So while Google has direct access to usage patterns through ownership of the browser and search engines, Microsoft must keep redesigning the Windows OS in its effort to glean this information from Google’s browser and search engine. That causes problems. The computer OS is far more complex than an OS or application designed simply for Internet access like Android, Chrome or Google search. A PC OS like Windows must be able to manage all the computer functions like memory, storage, applications, drivers and a host of other functions. Using an unwieldy OS like Windows to try to steal information from ever evolving Internet access applications is like chasing a butterfly through a china shop with a sledge hammer. It’s hard to avoid damaging the merchandise. Microsoft will keep redesigning Windows10 in order to collect the browsing data needed to feed their artificial intelligence engines so they can monetize you. The continuing “updates” will continue to cause problems. Microsoft thinks you will continue to grin and bear it because you have no alternatives. They are wrong. If Microsoft’s “weaponized” Windows 10 drives you up the wall you have several options. You can hunker down with Windows7 and turn off the automatic updates or go all in on the WWW with a Chromebook. The last two we call the nuclear options and are equally unpleasant,

Cut The Cord on Cable Forever Millions of Senior Citizens are completely cutting the cord on their monthly cable costs, allowing them to save $100+ per month in unnecessary fees. Many of them are switching to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video subscriptions, but there are also other ways you can get cable channels without needing to pay a monthly fee. All your local news, weather, sitcoms, cooking shows, kid’s shows, sports and thousands of movies are available for free with an antenna. In fact, most broadcast stations offer additional regional programming, absolutely free. The SkyWire antenna simply attaches to your current TV’s antenna jack (all TV’s have them), and then you get to enjoy Free Broadcast TV. It supports 1080p HDTV and has up to 30 miles of range, so it’s nothing like the “rabbit ears” you used in the past. If you find you’re not watching as much television as you used to, this could be the perfect solution for you and can save you a lot of money every month. 11. Consolidate All Your Existing Debt Into One Simple Payment - Stepping into retirement can be pretty daunting. Doing it with existing unsecured debts can make it even more of a challenge. Debt consolidation is the process of combining all your unsecured debts into a single monthly payment. Generally this allows for much lower payments on a monthly basis than the sum total of the separate debts – making life a lot more manageable. The likelihood in these circumstances of reducing interest rates is very high, and there are many firms out there who will walk you through the process

Or has the mysterious “check engine” light come on, and next thing you know the mechanic has a list of expensive engine parts that need replacing? Unfortunately, mechanics know taking advantage of people is easy, given their lack of knowledge about car maintenance needs. But there’s a new device you can carry with you in your car to tell you exactly what’s wrong with it. If you own a car built after 1996 then you can use this brilliant new device called Fixd to instantly diagnose any car problems. This means the next time your “Check Engine Light” happens to come on, you’ll know exactly what the issue is and the Mechanics won’t be able to lie to you! In the United States alone, this product did over $50,000,000 in sales in 2017. 13. Chances are you purchase the same household products on a daily/weekly basis. But what if you could get free samples sent to you from these very same manufacturers? Not a lot of people know about it, but you can actually claim free samples from top brands. If you’re looking for a way to get household goods, pet food samples, sweet treats, posters, days out vouchers and much more, we recommend signing up for the Free Samples Guide. Once you provide them with your email address, they’ll let you know when you’re eligible for the latest free samples and how to claim them. 16. Compression gear designed for the elderly has helped millions of Americans who have experienced foot pain related to the arch, heel, ankle, or plantar fascia. These episodes, no matter how short or how long, determine chronic issues varicose veins and difficulty walking becoming more frequent as time moves on. The wonderful team over at Doc Socks have come up with a fantastic pair of compression sock sleeves. These new socks dramatically reduce swelling and pain in the feet. They soothe achy tired feet and help with the circulation of blood flow so that your feet are getting enough oxygen… Right now they have a special 50% off discount just for seniors who qualify! 17. Get A Reverse Mortgage - Now although a reverse mortgage is available to older homeowners, it’s still a loan and should be looked at as such. Reverse mortgages allow elders to access the home equity they have built up in their homes now, and defer payment of the loan until they die, sell, or move out of the home. Because there are no required mortgage payments on a reverse mortgage, the interest is added to the loan balance each month. This could be a great option for you if you have a lot of home equity built up, but need some extra money to live during your retirement years. Many

retirees have worked hard all their lives and have most of their money tied up in their homes but don’t want to sell because they enjoy the area they live in. NightSight Driving Glasses - Seriously, did you know that the vast majority of car accidents happen at night and right before dawn? A lot of that has to do with glare and the problems with vision many people experience. Maybe that’s the reason these driving glasses are selling at a big discount for seniors over the age of 55. Night Sight HD promises to reduce night driving glare and eye strain, and it will dramatically improve seeing at night during snow or rainy conditions. It lets you see enhanced colour, is durable, lightweight and is fully equipped with polarized lenses. Contemporary Women Donate Teddy Bears for Vista Community Clinic – The Vista Community Clinic will soon have Teddy Bear Hugs for children they treat. The Vista Community Clinic provides the community with essential services designed to keep people healthy. Through donations from the community, the clinic is able to set up a safety net for children who otherwise would go without the medical care they need, or end up in a hospital emergency room. On June 23rd, the members of GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) brought their scissors and sewing machines to the San Marcos Community Center. During the club’s “Sew In”, members were able to create 71 handmade teddy bears. These bears will be donated to the Clinic so that each child receiving medical or dental care will have a friend to “hug”. Visit: www.cwonc.org www.cfwc.org www.gfwc.org
