The former Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner, may be the world’s most renowned transgender person today, but she is far from being the only influential sex-reassigned individual. Jenner may have blazed the most publicized trail for transgender liberation, but the daily events from countless others have reverberated more deeply, more profoundly, and have uprooted old laws and replanted new ones – all of which more directly affects you and me in our day-to-day lives. Sexual reassigned individuals have necessitated new laws for the daily workplace, newer and broader guidelines for sexual-abuse training by various work management teams and even controversial access to gender-assigned restrooms in many cities and states.
In all such scenarios, as cited above, people from around the globe are experiencing the transgender influence, if they like it or not. DATELINE SAN DIEGO COUNTY.
Violet Ri of San Ysidro High School would prove to be a pioneer of sorts. The attractive senior was popular, congenial, and transgender. Her transgender status was well-known at her school and, in fact, she won the sentiments of her classmates to the point where she was nominated for 2015 Homecoming Queen. She was on the precipice of making history: she became a nominee to become the first transgender Homecoming Queen in San Diego County history.
Already among the elite five students running for the prestigious school honor, she had already reached a historical benchmark. Win or lose, Violet Ri’s story captured national and international interest.
On Friday evening, November 6, 2015, fellow student, Pamela Guadiana, won the Homecoming Queen Crown fair and square. However, the residual impact of transgender awareness was greatly championed by a most courageous Violet Ri and, in so doing, her presence was, in itself, a crowning achievement for her. Her motto remains a clarion call to a nation of other emerging transgenders: “Be different and embrace it.” Originally born a boy, Violet Ri began transitioning around her junior year at San Ysidro High School. Her acceptance was overwhelming -- she was supported by her parents and encouraged by fellow students to the point of being cheered along with the San Ysidro High School marching band during a pep rally.
Today, Violet Ri is a bright and promising student at the University of Riverside, California where she has taken a major in Liberal Arts. She continues to be an outspoken advocate for

others like herself, “I really want to be an advocate because trans youth numbers are growing.”
As a student at the university level, Violet Ri continues to be a bright, intelligent, and well-loved individual in her brave new world. She is a bright star on the horizon for many transgender youth, many of whom continue to look in her direction for guidance, inspiration, and acceptance.
Such transgender stories are often quickly met with pros and cons and great combustible controversy. One way or the other, it is an emerging reality in today’s world – to ignore its existence would be the height of human folly. DATELINE ALASKA, U.S.A.

road paved with controversy, legality, and ethical challenges.
All of the above played-out in full force in 2016, just one year after San Diego County’s Violet Ri made a run for her high school’s Homecoming Queen crown. But this time, at Haines High School in Alaska, senior student Nattaphon “Ice” Wangyot made a successful run of a different sort. The transgender athlete captured all-state honors in girls’ track and field, a historic first in making “Ice” Wangyot the first transgender athlete to compete in any high school state championship.
Born biologically a male, Wangyot began transitioning to female during his junior year. In May of 2016 Wangyot became Alaska’s first transgender to win the state championship in the girls’ track and field events at Anchorage. But not without widespread controver-
sy and criticism which spread from a local news story to national, then global news.
In the United States, 30 out of 50 states already have policies set into place which allow transgender athletes to compete as the gender they identify with. Protestors from the Alaska Family Alliance saw things differently than some Wangyot supporters. Many protested that Wangyot’s triumphs on the track and field were more than just an individual exercising their right for ‘gender identity.’ According to critics, the transgender repercussions now directly affected the scholarship plans of other biological females in a most unfair way: “We have a responsibility to protect our girls that have worked really hard, that are working towards college scholarships,” was one reply. faced Wanygot in track competition expressed her own personal view: “I don’t know what’s politically correct to say, but in my opinion your gender is what you’re born with. It’s the DNA. Genetically, a guy has more muscle mass than a girl, and if he’s racing against a girl, he has an (unfair) advantage.”
What started out as an ordinary high school foot race at a track and field event in Alaska, turned out to be a milestone moment of reflection in jurisprudence. (Jurisprudence includes principles (behind) law that make the law. Jurisprudence scholars strive to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of law, and of legal reasoning which – in theory – should make any law fair and just). Wangyot’s reasoning behind the law which allowed her transgender status to compete with the girls seemed quite simple, at least to Wangyot’s thinking. The transgender athlete said her success on the track and field events were because she just worked harder than her competition. And Wangyot posted her remarks on Facebook for all to read: “If your kids have ‘attitude’ and practice enough it’s gonna be more fun.” Wanygot’s remark on Facebook ignited a firestorm of angry replies.
One mother posted: “If you were directing your comments towards me and my daughter, I think you need to reevaluate what you said Ice. She is a phenomenal runner for a female. She happens to be the fastest female in the MatSu Valley. And she’s only a fresh-

Men are physically different than females.” The widely-circulated comment that Wangyot could not compete with the boys, so girls were targeted as easier opponents, was also resurrected by the same mother: “Your times would not have allowed you to compete with the boys (at the state level). So don’t start casting stones telling my daughter she isn’t good enough. Because, she is.”
Wangyot’s scenario was clearly different from cheerleader Violet Ri from San Ysidro High School. Violet Ri’s situation seemed far more democratic where students could freely vote the outcome. In Nattaphon “Ice” Wangyot’s situation, the components of fair play in track-and-field competition was well-challenged, according to many legal observers Nonetheless, the transgender athlete was not without supporters. One student pointed out that defending female champion, Tanner Ealum, was able to vanquish Wangyot on the track. As the student commented, “If Tanner can beat her (Wangyot), then anybody can have a chance to beat her.” And others did: At Anchorage, Wangyot only finished in third place in the 200-meter dash (27.3 seconds), and was soundly trounced when she only managed a fifth place in the 100 meters event (13.36 seconds).
Prior to Nattaphon “Ice” Wangyot’s transgender headlines in high school volleyball and track-and-field events, the Alaska School Activities Association had already begun serious discussions back in 2014-15 regarding how transgender students would be
accommodated in interscholastic sports. The outcome of such meetings was that each individual school district in Alaska would have to make their own decision regarding transgender students. At Haines High School, Wangyot, for example, said she used a single-occupancy restroom. Her gym showers were arranged when the other stalls were empty, and her coach made certain no one else interrupted.
Whichever side one comes down on – or even if one chooses to remain neutral – the transgender era will, nonetheless, continue to impact and play a viable part of our daily lives, our schools, the workplace, and the nucleus of families around the world.
As such, it forces us, for better or for worse, to deeply reflect on ourselves, our sense of ethics and morality, our level of tolerance, and our interpretation of new laws – all of which will most assuredly define us as a human species and set into play our future social values. THE TRANSGENDER LEGACY.
It may come as a surprise that the transgender legacy is a long one. The erstwhile Bruce Jenner follows a long line of predecessors. Lili Elbe (1882-1931) was a Dutch transgender woman, born in Denmark, died in Germany. She is considered one of the first (identifiable) recipients of sex reassignment surgery. The year of her sex change was 1930, in the country of Germany. Others followed suit, such as American, Christine Jorgensen (19261989), who was born in the Bronx, New York, and whose sexual reassignment surgery took place in Denmark in late 1952. Jorgensen’s sex-change was high-profile news, worldwide, and the

The first surgeon to perform sex reassignment surgery within the United States was Dr. Elmer Belt (1893-1980). Prior to the Christine Jorgensen sensationalism in the world press, Dr. Belt was quietly performing sex-change operations for a number of years. He performed primarily male-to-female operations, although he did also perform a few female-to-male procedures as well. Only after suffering from family pressures did Dr. Belt stop performing sex-change operations in 1962. Aside from the contemporary, Caitlyn Jenner, Renee Richards (born Richard Rasking in 1934), is an American ophthalmologist and is among the most celebrated cases of transgender women in history. As is common with most transgender women, Raskind began cross-dressing sometime during college. What catapulted Renee Richards into the world spotlight was her quest to compete in professional tennis matches as a transgender woman. Prior to Richard’s sex reassignment surgery, he competed on the professional tennis ranks as a male. After his male-to-female surgery in 1975, the transgender Renee Richards sought to compete in the female tennis ranks in 1976, but was denied by the United States Tennis Association, which barred Richards from competing in the 1976 U. S. Women’s Open. The highprofile litigation finally was resolved when the New York Supreme Court stunned the world by over-ruling in her favor. In this landmark decision on August 16, 1977, Judge Ascione found in Richards favor by declaring, “This person is now a female.” Judgment further declared that denying her entry

Though allowed to compete in the U. S. Women’s Open, Renee Richards lost to Virginia Wade in the first round of the singles competition. However, Richards advanced to the finals in the women’s doubles.

When Caroline Cossey appeared as a sexy ‘extra’ in the 1981 James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only” starring Roger Moore, she turned many heads with her allure and sensuality. Tula’s gender-disguised life ended in 1982 when the exotic English model would be exposed in tabloids as a transgender female but, by then, it was too late -- Tula had already accomplished what many of the world’s most beautiful, aspiring females could only dream about.
Before her exposure, she was the fantasy girl of countless millions of men around the planet, and admired by legions of beautiful women. Her accomplishments take one’s breath away, especially for her time: she worked on one of England’s most popular TV game shows; became a supermodel appearing in top magazines such as Australian Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar; she was booked extensively as a “glamour model,” even appearing as a Page Three Girl for the British tabloid The Sun.
Even after she was ‘outed’ as a transgender female, Playboy Magazine welcomed her back in their September 1991 issue, which has become somewhat of a collectible issue today, alongside of Marilyn Monroe’s sexy layout in the premiere issue of Playboy Magazine back in 1953.
However, the debacle and scandalized headlines after Tula was exposed as transgender diminished Tula’s enthusiasm, plunging her into deep depression to the point where she would contemplate suicide.
As such, her modeling career never fully recovered and after a period of soul-searching she slowly became a crusader for transgender rights, using

Originally born Barry Kenneth Cossey on August 31, 1954, in Norfolk, England, Caroline Cossey, more popularly known by her modeling name, Tula, is now 62 years old and is married to second husband, David Flinch (1992-present) and currently resides near Atlanta, Georgia, in America. Caroline transitioned from male to female when she was 20 years old.
While the famed American, Caitlyn Jenner, became a trans-woman at the much older age of 64, Tula and others of her ilk were transitioned at a much younger age, while still blossoming in their youth, empowering them to capture international beauty titles, pageant crowns, as well as the envy of both men and women everywhere.
Had she not succumbed to the scandalized headlines and public scrutiny, Tula wonders to this day if things might have been different for her, if only she had held fast to her meteoric success, which was still on the ascent.
But no – instead, she chose to selfdestruct on her own. She voluntarily removed herself from the highly popular British game show “3-2-1” which continued to run successfully for 10 years and from which she earned a high salary, and stratospheric popularity. “It’s amazing to think what my life would have been like if I’d stayed,” she wonders out loud.
It is most remarkable that, despite her own choice for self-removal from the public eye, she still remained in high demand for magazines, television, and segments of entertainment in general. But now, after her exposure, she felt her demand was now based on her

unique gender identity, rather than her modeling virtues. “All the jobs offered after my past was revealed became based on my gender,” she wistfully recalls.
Transgender models were not widely accepted at the time. It was highly ironic because prior to being revealed as a trans-girl, the world had already called her among the most beautiful of women from what they initially saw with the uncensored eye. After being ‘outed’ these same admiring minds seemed to color and overrule their own visual judgment.
The eyes of the world, somehow, saw her beauty differently before she was exposed. Some said her image was for the uncensored eye, not the mental shackles of prejudice which now anchored and clipped her wings.
An ancient bard once penned: “Beauty is best beheld by the unfiltered eyes only, not with the clumsy intrusion of thought which reeks of pride and prejudice.” Uncanny words which eerily seem to fit Tula’s early life, when she captivated the eyes only – not the transphobic minds – of men. Not so unlike the title of the James Bond spy film she once appeared in – “For Your Eyes Only.” DATELINE SOUTH AFRICA.

The murder happened on June 7th in the 2200 block of San Clemente Avenue in Vista. Construction workers found the body of 51-year-old Robert Pierro when they entered the home. Pierro had trauma in the upper portion of his body. Anyone with information about this murder or Duran's whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. A resident of Temecula, Jackson was sentenced to state prison by Vista Superior Court Judge Michael Washington.
Officials said the thefts happened over at least a four-year period, and were uncovered in April 2016 when a bank contacted the company’s owner after suspecting his signature had been forged on a $2,500 check to Jackson. old roommate after a dispute. According to CPD, Kuykendall and his roommate had a dispute and when the roommate turned his back, Kuykendall stabbed him. Police responded to the 2200 block of Avenida Magnifica at 8:23 a.m. after Kuykendall reported the alleged crime. He notified police he placed the knife in the kitchen sink and was waiting on the porch. Kuykendall also noted that there was a third roommate inside the apartment that was providing medical aid to the victim.
The 20-year-old man, meanwhile, was transported by the Oceanside Fire Department to a landing field where he was airlifted to Scripps Medical Center in La Jolla and is currently in stable condition. A 44-year-old Chula Vista man was arrested by Carlsbad police for kidnapping an Escondido man on Thursday. Anthony Henderson allegedly forced a 22-year-old male victim to perform sex acts at gunpoint at a motel on the block of Macadamia Drive in Carlsbad. The victim was able to call police.

But, sometimes a confession can set the record straight, and I want to give credit where credit is due. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they used to say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Lim. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and the cute little boys.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story. Back then I was a high school student and an avid martial artist in Korea, but I developed a painful neck condition while I was practicing flying-sidekicks. The pain in my neck was so intense that I couldn’t move my neck, study or read, and sometimes I couldn’t even sleep. My hands were getting numb. I went to a doctor who told me he didn’t know what the problem was and just gave me some pain pills, which didn’t solve the problem at all. After considering surgery, (That was the only option according to the surgeon), I decided against it. But, there’s more... While I was in college, I was

California's Native Wildlife
This month, I was excited to join 200 caring people from around the state to advocate for native wildlife at the Capitol for the Humane Society’s annual lobby day. At the press conference in front of the Capitol, I spoke about my bill, AB 1031, that creates a voluntary donation `check off ’ on state tax returns to support Native California Wildlife rehabilitation groups like Project Wildlife in San Diego County and about 70 others that rescue and provide care for injured, sick or orphaned wildlife statewide.
California law currently allows taxpayers to donate to a number of charitable funds when filing their tax returns. My bill adds the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Fund to the list of causes eligible for taxpayer donations. These funds will be distributed by the Franchise Tax Board via annual grant programs to eligible entities working to protect native wildlife. trained as a native songbird rehabilitator. Since then I have cared for and raised many baby birds from house finches, starlings, swallows, mockingbirds, doves and many more. Each had unique medical problems and most were released to the wild. Dedicated volunteers transport and rehabilitate injured or orphaned wildlife, from opossums, owls, hawks, raccoons, etc. all over our county. It costs money for food, the central office and medical supplies. AB 1031 will help these efforts all across the state.
The bill is progressing in the Senate, and I am hoping for final approval later this summer to help God's special creatures that make California such an awesome place to live. The event was a resounding success, thanks to all who participated, for the direction by Carol Spizzirri and her committee, the traditional Hawaiian Luncheon Luau by the St. Mark Country Club, music by the Lake San Marcos Ukulele Club, fashions from Chico’s and the White House Black Market, the beautiful Bird of Paradise centerpieces, other table and room decorations, for all the donations making it possible for all the items to bid on, for those who narrated and auctioneered, and especially for those who attended and supported this event, making it such a great success. THANK YOU! Meetings of the Republican Women will be dark this summer, but do come by the booth at the 4th of July celebration at the Lake and the Republican booth at the San Diego County Fair – the LSM club will be covering the booth on June 29th. Oceanside Charitable Foundation Supports Local Youth - Oceanside Charitable Foundation (OCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $53,000 in grants to five local nonprofit organizations at its 9th Annual Grants Celebration in May at the Oceanside Museum of Art. This year, OCF supported programs that helped vulnerable and at-risk youth in the Oceanside community. The programs funded include: New Directions with Casa de Amparo ($25,000); Basic Needs/My First Home with Just in Time for Foster Youth ($10,000); Safe Space with North County LGBTQ Resource Center ($10,000); School Pantry Program with Feeding San Diego ($5,000); Fire Safe Kids with the Burn Institute ($3,000). “Over the past nine years, OCF members have come together to grant more than $450,000 to organizations strengthening our community,” shared Beverly Holtz, OCF Board Chair. “OCF was founded for Oceanside, by Oceanside, to benefit Oceanside causes. The work OCF grantees are doing is a strong testament to this commitment, including grantee Casa de Amparo.” Casa is a current and former grantee that embodies the mission of OCF and its grantmaking. The organization supports individuals impacted
by and at risk of child abuse and neglect, through a range of programs and services that promote healing, growth, and healthy relationships. Through the Casa de Amparo New Directions Program, local youth ages 18 to 25 who are foster and former foster youth are able to participate in a housing program that addresses the challenges of transitioning from foster care to independent living. And that’s just one of the programs supported by OCF. OCF is dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in Oceanside by increasing responsible and effective philanthropy; building a community endowment for the benefit of the region; providing funds annually to community organizations and causes, and giving the community a vehicle for legacy planning and gifts that will benefit Oceanside now and forever. Retired Marine, Cal Frsanz, was Guest Speaker at DAR - The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), was privileged to have retired Marine, Cal Franz, as a guest at a recent meeting. Franz presented a power point presentation about SSgt Reckless, a Mongolian mare who served alongside the Marines of a recoilless rifle platoon during the Korean War. The battles being fought by this platoon were in hilly country and the weapons had to be moved constantly so as not to draw enemy fire. Reckless would carry six to eight 75mm recoilless rifle rounds, each weighing about 25 pounds, up the hills, and carry the wounded down, most often by herself with no Marine handler. Even though wounded at times, she continued her task. When the unit left Korea they worked to get Reckless brought to the United States to live out her life in peace. She sired four foals, and was buried at the stables at Camp Pendleton when her 19 year life came to an end. A monument was dedicated to her at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. As the Marines say, “She wasn’t a horse –she was a Marine.” Regent, Alida Woodward, presented Franz with thanks for his service and a certificate.

CWONC Members Volunteered at Beer Festival – From June 16-18, members of Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) served as stewards at the 11th Annual San Diego International Beer Festivals in Del Mar at the fairgrounds; the largest beer festival on the West Coast. The 2017 Competition featured 1,564 entries from 291 breweries from 23 U.S. states and 20 countries. The event is an opportunity for CWONC to raise funds in support of their favorite community projects – helping women, children, the military and our fourlegged friends. As the 1950s began, Murrow began his television career with misgivings about the new medium. CBS Radio’s “Hear It Now” moved to television and was re-christened “See It Now.” In 1953 Murrow launched a celebrity series entitled “Person to Person.” The Man Who Pioneered Radio and TV News
Edward R. Murrow came to prominence with a series of radio broadcasts from Europe for the Columbia Broadcasting System during World War II. He was born April 25, 1908, Egbert Roscoe Murrow at Polecat Creek, near Greensboro, North Carolina. His parents were Quakers. His home was a log cabin without electricity or plumbing, on a farm bringing in only a few hundred dollars a year from corn and hay.
A graduate of Washington State College, Murrow joined CBS in 1935 and remained with the network for his entire career. When Murrow joined CBS there was only announcer Robert Trout who coached Murrow with tips on how to communicate effectively on radio.
Murrow went to London in 1937 to head CBS's European operations. He hired journalist William L. Shirer, and assigned him to Berlin. When the war began on Sept. 1, 1939, Murrow provided live radio broadcasts back to America during the bombing of London. These broadcasts electrified U.S. radio audiences. These reports, especially during the Blitz, began with what became his signature opening, "This is London!" He flew on 25 British and American combat bombing missions over Europe, reporting to listeners. At the end of one 1940 broadcast, Murrow added a nightly phrase being used by Londoners: "Good night, and good luck." He was urged to stick with it, and another Murrow catchphrase was born.
As the war expanded, Murrow expanded CBS News in London to include a group of reporters acclaimed for their intellect and descriptive power, including Eric Sevareid, Charles Collingwood, Howard K. Smith, and others, later dubbed “Murrow’s Boys.” In 1944, Murrow sought Walter Cronkite to take over for Bill Downs at the CBS Moscow bureau. Cronkite initially accepted, but after receiving a better offer from his current employer, the United Press, he turned down the offer. On April 12, 1945, Murrow was one of the first reporters at the Buchenwald death camp in Germany. In his radio
“See It Now” focused on a number of controversial issues, but it is best remembered as the show that criticized McCarthyism and the Red Scare, contributing, if not leading, to the political downfall of U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wisc., Murrow used excerpts from McCarthy's own speeches and proclamations to criticize the senator and point out episodes where he had contradicted himself. The broadcast contributed to a nationwide backlash against McCarthy and is seen as a turning point in the history of television. It provoked tens of thousands of letters, telegrams, and phone calls to CBS headquarters, running 15 to 1 in favor.
Murrow offered McCarthy the chance to respond to the criticism with a full half-hour on “See It Now.” McCarthy accepted the invitation, accusing Murrow of being a Communist sympathizer. Ultimately, McCarthy's rebuttal further decreased his already fading popularity. Murrow's hard-hitting approach to the news, however, cost him influence. “See It Now,” in general, did not score well on prime-time television. However, Murrow’s program concept lives on today as CBS’ “60 Minutes.” Another contributing element to Murrow's career decline was the rise of a new crop of television journalists. Walter Cronkite's arrival at CBS in 1950 marked the beginning of a major rivalry which continued until Murrow resigned from the network in 1961. Murrow held a grudge dating back to 1944, when Cronkite turned down his offer to head the CBS Moscow bureau. Murrow was invited by New York's Democratic Party to run for the U.S. Senate. Harry Truman advised Murrow that his choice was between being the junior senator from New York or being Edward R. Murrow, beloved broadcast journalist and hero to millions. He listened to Truman.
A chain smoker throughout his life, Murrow was almost never seen without a cigarette, smoking between 60 and 65 a day. He developed lung cancer and lived for two years after an operation to remove his left lung. Murrow died April 27, 1965, at his home in La Jolla two days after his 57th birthday. His colleague and friend Eric Sevareid said of him: "He was a shooting star; and we will live in his afterglow a very long time."

Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: The Local Link - Museums and architectural societies around the country are celebrating the 150th birthday this month of Frank Lloyd Wright, America's best known architect. At the Valley Center History Museum, a display has been posted to note that work of the iconic architect is reflected in two local properties. In 1959, the year Wright died, one of his sons, John Lloyd Wright, was hired to design a home on a 10.5-acre bluff on North Lake Wohlford Road that echoes the architectural concept of his famous father. The home of 2,900 square feet has been compared to an extant Wright house in Iowa that was built in 1908. Original blueprints of the Valley Center house, signed by Wright, were examined by local historians when they were found in a bedroom closet inside the home in 2004.

Elsewhere in Valley Center, John Lloyd Wright, who worked briefly with his famous father, was commissioned in 1949 to design an office for United Nations Ambassador Irving Salomon at historic Rancho Lilac on Lilac Road. Valley Chapter, DAR, Identifying Veterans Graves in Valley Center – 163 and Counting; that’s the current number of veterans identified in the Valley Center Cemetery by the ladies of the Center of the Valley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) who have been working for months examining headstones and updating records. Currently, 1,538 records have been uploaded to Find-AGrave. This is a HUGE accomplishment and will greatly benefit family research. The veterans identified represent all Americaninvolved wars/conflicts from the Civil War to modern times. Word spread quickly and it became crystal clear that residents care about the public library and we haven’t forgotten the senseless closure of the East Valley Branch Library. FREEDOM – WHAT IS IT?
The 4th of July is about freedom, at least for us Americans – freedom from England’s taxation, appropriating and abusing individual property, quartering soldiers in the colonies, denying the right of assemblage, restricting free trade, plus excessive tariffs and more. We share in the fruits of the Revolutionaries who fought and defeated the British forces and gave us our American way of life. The slogan, “Freedom isn’t free,” is often heralded as the price which was paid to give us our freedom. Yet, what really is freedom? I would like to define it as freedom from oppression and freedom for opportunity. Oppression comes in many forms, probably the most obvious is political control, where a

This is seenin countries such as Saudi Arabia where women are not allowed to drive a car, be seen in public singly, or be equally employed. This restraint is also in countries such as North Korea with no opportunity for dissent of any kind, especially about the Government.
We need not go far in the U. S. to find oppression – in religious movements exercising control over beliefs and behavior, in homes where a spouse dominates with demands and abuse, in companies which threaten firings and discrimination when employees expose abuses, when because of color, religion, or sexual orientation there is harassment. And we could add more examples. It is in such cases there is no freedom. And then there is the freedom of opportunity – opportunity to think, disagree, imagine, create, express, believe, explore without recrimination of insult and punishment.
A nation to be free gives equal opportunity to all in freedom from oppression and freedom for opportunity. In these two expressions we can freely sing “God bless America” and mean it.

One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, "What time is it?" The tower responded, "Who is calling?" The aircraft replied, "What difference does it make?" ference. If it is an American Airlines flight, it is 3 o'clock. If it is an Air Force plane, it is 1500 hours. If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells. If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3. If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it's Thursday afternoon and 120 minutes to "Happy Hour." During training exercises, the lieutenant who was driving down a muddy back road encountered another car stuck in the mud with a red-faced colonel at the wheel. "Your jeep stuck, sir?" asked the lieutenant as he pulled alongside.
"Nope," replied the colonel, coming over and handing him the keys, "Yours is." Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new colonel was sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door. Conscious of his new position, the colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the airman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes, General, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir." Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, "What do you want?"

That was only one part of Mom’s personal philosophy. Mom started in 1946 gradually buying up the hundred-year-old Victorian homes that lined her street (North 11th street in Richmond, Indiana.) Mom bought one after another converting them to apartment buildings with four to ten, one and two bedroom apartments. By the mid 1990s mom owned twenty-two properties with 130 apartments. It wasn’t the best part of town and most of mom’s tenants were factory workers who paid weekly. Though Mom was relentless in chasing down delinquent tenants “if you give an inch they’ll take a mile,” she actually loved

Mom had been out of the “landlord business” for a decade when she died in 2007. Her funeral service and visitation was attended by scores of her tenants. We were amazed how many lives she had touched. Her passion for fairness stayed with all of us, her four boys. Doug became a judge, Rex an Attorney and Gary a science teacher in Greencastle Indiana. I spent most of my career managing large manufacturing divisions for fortune 500 corporations. I found Mom’s philosophy worked extremely well. Treat everyone as if they were your friend and neighbor, bend over backwards to help those who genuinely need help but slam the hammer on those who tried to “job” or take advantage of the system. In over twenty years managing large industrial operations from Canada to California we never lost a LRB claim or a lawsuit. We found that our employees were nearly always on our side when it came to stopping the abuse of work rules by a few selfish employees. Nome and I retired from the corporate world to open the Computer Factory in 1995. We brought Mom’s operating philosophy to our own business. We aren’t as tough as Mom but we don’t have to be. The overwhelming majority of our customer

relationships are positive. We do have disagreements sometimes, but so do best friends. Rarely do we find ourselves in a situation where a customer actually tries to stiff us. As a matter of fact, we can recall it happening only twice in the past 22 years. So this is a collection effort dedicated to you Mom, we haven’t given up. The amounts are too small to be worth filing in Small Claims Court so we are making this public appeal as our last ditch effort to get what’s owed us.
