Fourth of July is just around the corner and that means spectacular firework displays around the country as well as 84-million Americans enjoying barbecues, all in the spirit of observing our country’s birthday! Did you know that more hot dogs are consumed during 4th of July than at any other time of the year? Well, it’s true. We Americans will eat well over 155 million hot dogs on that one day, alone, which is staggering! To better visualize this, The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

if every hot dog eaten during the 4th of July were laid end-to-end, they would extend from Escondido to New York City, not just once – but 5 times over!

While Americans eat far more hamburgers per year (50-billion annually) than hot dogs (20 billion per year), that statistic changes with hot dogs being more popular over 4th of July than hamburgers! That is why July is officially designated as “National Hot Dog Month.” Which item (listed below) do you think we Americans spend more on

4th of July? Take a guess. A Hot dogs B Fried chicken C Chips & dip D Beer

Make no mistake, fried chicken is one of the most popular foods during the 4th of July, but even fried chicken and hot dogs take a back seat to beer! So, if you guessed “D,” beer, well you’re absolutely correct! According to the U. S. Nielsen Consumer Company and the National Retail Federation, over 68.3 million cases of beer are sold over 4th of July! That means about $1-billion of the bubbly suds is con-

sumed!

Our country turns 242-years-old this July 4, 2018, and it would take an enormous birthday cake to feed everyone! The mountain-sized birthday cake would have to have enough slices to feed over 326 million Americans! But it would be well worth it. After all, our Mother Country still looks grand at 242 years, still a youngster compared to other countries around this Blue Marble. We Americans love a good 4th of July celebration and we love to

gather around family and friends and enjoy a hearty spread of delicious fare that runs the gamut from hot dogs to hamburgers, ribs to chicken, potato salad to coleslaw, and all gastronomical delights inbetween. Yup, no one celebrates and parties like we do, the children of Uncle Sam, and we’re high-stepping proud of that fact.

Well, now that it’s America’s birthday celebration, let’s continue the party spirit and have fun with some amazing facts about our great country. Some of these facts may truly shock you! Here’s your first multiplechoice question. WERE ALL U. S. PRESIDENTS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES? A. Yes B. No Just the question, alone, shocks many people! But if you said “No,” then you are correct!

Technically speaking, 8 of our early U. S. Presidents were not born in the United States because they were born (before) the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and, therefore, were officially born in the British colonies at the time! While it is true that all of our U. S. Presidents were Americans when sworn into presidential office, with George Washington our first U. S.

The angel said: "Unfortunately, there's only one space available in Heaven today so I must decide which one of you will be admitted."

The angel asked Dolly if there was some particular reason why she should go to Heaven. Dolly took off her top and said: "Look at these, they're the most perfect breasts God ever created and I'm sure it will please God to be able to see them every day, for eternity." The angel thanked Dolly, and asked Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the same question.

The Queen walked over to a toilet, pulled the lever and flushed it without saying a word.

The Angel immediately said: "Okay, your Majesty, you may go into Heaven." Dolly was outraged and asked, "What was that all about? I showed you two of God's own perfect creations and you

President in 1789, they all took office (after) the Declaration of Independence. However, they were not all born in the United States since 8 of our early presidents were born (before) the United States was created!

Today, it has been a long-standing Constitutional law that all U. S. Presidents (among other qualifications) must be born in the United States and be at least 35 years of age. WHICH U.S. PRESIDENT FIRST OFFICIALLY CELEBRATED 4TH OF JULY AT THE WHITE HOUSE? A George Washington B Thomas Jefferson C Abraham Lincoln The 4th of July was celebrated as early as 1777 with major celebrations, for example, in Philadelphia, where parades, fireworks and a thirteen-shot cannon salute took place. But the first president to officially celebrate with 4th of July ceremonies at the White House was none other than Thomas Jefferson in 1801. That Thomas Jefferson sure knew how to party!

So if you picked “B” above, well, then you earned another slice of pie! Incidentally, Thomas Jefferson was one of only three U.S. Presidents who happened to have died on the 4th of July. The other two were,

turned me down. She simply flushed a commode and she got admitted to Heaven! Would you explain that to me?"

"Sorry, Dolly," said the Angel, "but even in Heaven, a royal flush beats a pair, no matter how big they are." WELCOME to 2018

He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. 'Did you see the paper?' asked Gallagher. 'They say I died!!'

'Yes, I saw it!' replied Finney. 'Where are ye callin' from?' •••• An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut . The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, 'Sir, have you been drinking?' 'Just water,' says the priest.

John Adams and James Monroe. Jefferson and Adams not only died on July 4th, but they passed away on the very same day, only hours apart from each other (with Jefferson passing away first)!

President, James Madison, holds the distinction of being the smallest U. S. President, standing only 5’ 4” in height and weighting less than 100 pounds, which is less than the average American teenage girl!

Now, that’s a real son of Uncle Sam! WHO WAS THE OLDEST PERSON TO SIGN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE? A. John Hancock B. Thomas Jefferson C. Benjamin Franklin

If you guessed “B” William H. Taft, you get another slice of cheesecake with ice cream on top! William H. Taft, our 27th U. S. President never shied away from the dinner table! He was 6’ tall and weighed a staggering 340 pounds, becoming the heaviest American president on record! He would eventually exceed 350 pounds and it is said he once got stuck in the White House bathtub! A bigger bathtub had to be installed which could fit four normal-sized men!

On the other end of the stick, President Calvin Coolidge is the only American president (so far) who was actually born on July 4th, in the year 1872.

If you selected “C” for Benjamin Franklin, you are absolutely correct! There were a total of 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, with Benjamin Franklin being the oldest at age 71. Thomas Lynch, Jr. (born August 5, 1749) was the youngest at age 26. Edward Rutledge (born November 23, 1749) was also 26, but still 3 months and 18 days older than Thomas Lynch, Jr. WHO WAS THE SMALLEST U. S. PRESIDENT? A. James Madison B. Andrew Jackson C. Jimmy Carter

This is a hard one, but if you picked “A” James Madison, well you must be a super patriot! Our 4th U. S.

The trooper says, 'Then why do I smell wine?' The priest looks at the bottle and says, 'Good Lord! He's done it again!' •••• Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender, 'Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman.' 'Oh yeah?' said Charlie, 'And how did this one end?'

'When it was over,' Mike replied, 'She came to me on her hands and knees.'

'Really,' said Charles, 'Now that's a switch! What did she say?'

She said, 'Come out from under the bed, you little chicken.' •••• Patton staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Kathleen.

He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.. Managing not to yell, Patton sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood. He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed..

language comes as a total shock to many people today! But it’s true! If you chose “B,” Martin Van Buren, well you are a most amazing scholar, or the world’s greatest guesser! Our 8th U. S. President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, did not speak English as his first language! Van Buren grew up in the Dutch community of Kinderhook New York and only spoke Dutch as a child. He eventually learned to speak English as a second language while attending the local schoolhouse. Hmm, teaching such fun trivia in my U. Abraham Lincoln C. Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt

Are you kidding?! This is hard to believe, but if you picked “B” Abraham Lincoln, I’m just plumb impressed with you! In 1831, when Abraham Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois, he was soon confronted by a well-known bully by the name of Jack Armstrong. It was here where Armstrong challenged Lincoln to a wrestling match! Lincoln was a clerk, at the time, at a store known as Denton Offutt. To Armstrong’s misfortune, Lincoln

accepted the wrestling challenge, which quickly grabbed the town’s attention in the form of frenzied betting by the townsfolk. Lincoln won the match, and also his challenger’s respect, from that day onward. The town’s residents quickly learned of Abe’s supreme wrestling skills. As a young wrestler, Abraham Lincoln would only be defeated once out of approximately 300 matches! Now that’s a most amazing wrestling record that would even make The Hulk turn green with envy – well, if he weren’t already green, that is! Bottom line: you don’t mess with our 16th U. S. President. Bonus fact: Not many people know that Abraham Lincoln was once a part-owner of a saloon in Springfield, Illinois, called “Berry and Lincoln.” Boy, after all these years, that Lincoln is still full of historical surprises!

Of all the exotic pets kept at the U. S. White House down through the years, none compared to the pet alligators that belonged to President John Quincy Adams and President Herbert Hoover!

Starting with early U. S. President John Quincy Adams, the alligator was an unusual gift to the sitting president from a French general. Adams rather enjoyed the startled reactions to his pet alligator and continued showing-off his exotic reptile to disbelieving guests at the White House! The fierce-looking alligator was, initially, kept in the White House’s unfinished East Room and its nearby bathtub.

The scary intruder was eventually relocated to a different home.

Not to be outdone by the John Quincy Adams administration, a hundred years later, President Herbert Hoover would come to possess not one, but, two pet alligators, both of which were sometimes allowed inside the White House in the early 1930s!

The two alligators actually belonged to Hoover’s younger son, Allan, who frequently presented them to terrified guests!

Oceanside has agreed to license two delivery-only dispensaries for medical marijuana following the city’s medical marijuana ordinance which passed in April. Presently, Oceanside allows two licensed medical marijuana delivery services from outside the city for patients with prescriptions. The ordinance approved earlier this year allows the cultivation, testing, manufacture and other aspects of the cannabis industry,

Supporters of medical marijuana/cannabis oil talk about the need to give ailing seniors the safe and natural medicine they need. Many users say cannabis oil relieves pain far more quickly and safely than the many opioid on the market.

Meanwhile, the city of Vista approved initiatives for the city ballot that would allow medical marijuana retailers and testing laboratories, and levy taxes on those businesses. The City Marijuana Business Initiative would permit up to three

retailers to sell medical marijuana. It wouldn’t allow storefront sales, but would permit those retailers to sell through delivery only. The initiative would also allow two marijuana testing laboratories to operate in Vista.

The council also approved a separate ballot measure, the City Marijuana Tax Initiative, which would place a 5 percent business tax on marijuana sales and production. Each of the three potential pot delivery dealers would generate about $84,000 per year in taxes, the city estimated.

Vista is one of several North County cities that specifically prohibits marijuana sales, but the ballot measures would reverse that. The dueling initiatives come as the city has moved aggressively to rid itself of unlicensed pot dispensaries. The city of Escondido has turned a deaf ear to all proposals to provide for any form of medical marijuana dispensaries in that city. Man About Town

There's this guy . . . let's call him Jim . . . who has dedicated his life to taking care of all veterans, regardless of which branch in which they served.

Most of the veterans he services are those who are homeless, who are in need, who are down on their luck . . . and he recognizes that about 20% of all the homeless will never be anything but that . . . homeless. Still, he helps them all . . . sober, drunk, high, straight, gay . . . if they're a veteran and needs help, he's there, night and day.

It's not all strawberries and roses either . . . he's had veterans he was trying to help kick him, stomp on his feet, hit him, beat him up, vomit on him . . . and he keeps coming back to help them.

He works the streets . . . he works the streets you and I would not like-

In one case a friend of his asked him to come by and to bring a six pack. He agreed. When he entered his friend's apartment he found him on the floor with a needle still in his arm. He had injected a mixture of heroin and fentanyl. That fentanyl is bad stuff. It can, and does, kill within five seconds. It is becoming a major part of the opioide epidemic and it is flooding across the border and/or being manufactured in garage chemistry labs here in Southern California . . . in some cases even being mixed with battery acid. And people are putting this stuff in their bodies.

Jim also sees things on the street that sickens him. Kids, ages 10, 12, 14, selling themselves on street corners - for money for food, for drugs, for their family.

Jim has another friend . . . a big mirror image of a Hell's Angel . . . leather jacket, no shirt . . . just bare chest and muscle. This guy sees a car stopped at a curb with the driver chatting up adolescent kids, seeking sex for money. This guy has a great big 10' steel bar. He runs up, slams the steel bar into the rear window of the car. You can hear and smell the rubber burning for a full half minute as those cars beat it out of the area.

Most recently, Jim was working the streets, looking for veterans that needed help when he heard a woman whimpering and crying. She was next to a dumpster with her two children, both not yet old enough to attend school. Her husband had beat the hell out of her and then kicked her and the two kids out of the house. She was seeking refuge at the dumpster . . . and here were two grinning thugs approaching her, one with his pants down around his ankles, saying things like . . . "gonna give you some sugar, momma . . . " Jim scurried back to his car and grabbed a baseball bat. He rushed to the two thugs and he took a mighty swing and nailed the worst of the two thugs right up alongside the head. He hit him so hard he permanently disfigured the guys face. The other thug decided he had other places he should be and left. Quickly. The police had responded and Jim spent the night in jail . . . but once all the facts were sorted out, he was released. Thing is, Jim would do it all over again. I intentionally do not give Jim's real name . . . reason? Some of the things Jim has to do are not entirely legal. But things that have to be done. And some are things that, when done, are the only way to get the message across. Clearly.

Like laying a baseball bat forcefully against the head of a no-account creep. Why does Jim do things like this?

Metropolitan Police Department actually stopped and cited Ulysses S. Grant three times for speeding.” On one occasion, while serving as U. S. President, Grant was racing his horse-drawn presidential coach when he accidentally ran over a young boy’s foot. According to Washington D. C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier’s recent interview: “He (President Grant) was actually racing his buggy on M Street, where he was taken into custody (arrested and later released). We (the police back then) seized his horse and buggy.” These accounts are also corroborated by John F. Marszalek, Executive Director of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Collection at Mississippi State University. After police hauled the president down to the police station, they were unsure if they could charge a U. S. P resident. “They ended up letting him pay a fine and walk back to the White House.” WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT HAD THE MOST CHILDREN? A. John Tyler B. Dwight D. Eisenhower C. John F. Kennedy

The “Busy Bee” in this category is none other than John Tyler! So if you picked “A” above, well I think you should run for office! Our 10th U. S. President, John Tyler, who served from 1841 to 1845, had an astonishing 15 children during his lifetime! John Tyler fathered the 15

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT SPOKE THE MOST FOREIGN LANGUAGES? A Thomas Jefferson B John Quincy Adams C John F. Kennedy This is a very tricky one! So don’t feel bad if you missed it. While most people might pick Thomas Jefferson right off the bat, it was actually “B,” John Quincy Adams who (fluently) spoke the most foreign languages! While it is true that Thomas Jefferson spoke and read several languages, it was our 6th American President who still holds the record for speaking the most languages, including French, Dutch, Russian, Latin, Greek, German, and Italian, among others! In total, John Quincy Adams became fluent in as many as 8 languages! As a child, John Quincy Adams traveled with his father on diplomatic assignments all over the world. The young Adams was born with a most uncanny mind to quickly learn languages. Most early American presidents that served during the 18th and 19th

centuries, studied Latin, and sometimes Greek, in their classical education but, even then, they were not always truly fluent in both speaking and reading these languages.

While historians can confirm that Thomas Jefferson was said to speak 5 foreign languages, foremost scholars are quick to point out that Jefferson often exaggerated his (fluency) in each of them. Linguistic experts evaluate Thomas Jefferson speaking some of these foreign languages on a “conversational fluency” only, but not on a “proficiently fluent” level. Nevertheless, Jefferson had an eclectic library including dictionaries in a wide variety of world languages, including Arabic, Gaelic, and Welsh (though historians agree he was not fluent in all of them).

Thomas Jefferson’s own contemporaries, such as John Adams, knew the twinkle in Thomas Jefferson’s eye whenever Jefferson would overly-embellish his linguistic talents. Jefferson once bragged that he learned Spanish fluently in just 19 days while on a sea journey to France, to which John Adams amusingly quipped: “But, Mr. Jefferson tells large tales.” WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WAS ONCE A LAS VEGAS DANCER AND STANDUP COMEDIAN? Yes, you read that question correctly! And the correct answer is one of the multiple choices below. Close your eyes, and take a guess! You

This one is tricky because all of the U. S. Presidents listed above were/are known for their wit and sense of humor. Such as when President Barack Obama did a 20minute standup comedy routine with comedian Keegan-Michael Key at the 2015 White House Correspondence Dinner, to cite just one example. But only one former American president actually did a professional dance and standup comedy routine in Las Vegas! If you chose “B,” Ronald Reagan, well, you are simply amazing!

In the mid-1950s, Ronald Reagan’s acting career took a nose-dive and in order to stay healthily employed, the future U. S. President became a dancer and standup comedian at the Last Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas!

In February of 1954, Ronald Reagan performed with the singing group called The Continentals, and with the Blackburn Twins, along with Evelyn Ward and the Honey Brothers. Reagan appeared in the hotel’s Ramona Room where he hosted the show, told jokes, danced, and even performed with trained chimpanzees! Later, Ronald Reagan would say

about his Las Vegas experience: “I hope I never have to sink this low again.” But in 1954 the future U. S. President was $18,000 in debt and sorely in need of financial income.

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WAS ONCE A HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADER? Yes, as shocking as this may sound, you did read this question correctly. Take your best guess, below.” A. George W. Bush B. Barack Obama C. Donald Trump Hmm, this is a difficult choice, no question about that. But if you selected “A” for George W. Bush, then rah-rah-rah for you!!

President George W. Bush (son of President George H. W. Bush) certainly had the high school spirit and he proved it, time and again! Our 43rd U. S. President, George W. Bush, was head cheerleader in high school during his senior year at Phillips Academy, a boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts! He also played baseball. WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WAS A COSMOPOLITAN FASHION MODEL?

This question, alone, sounds unbelievable! But, it’s true! Take your best guess, below: A. John F. Kennedy B. Gerald Ford C. Ronald Reagan

This is a tough one because everyone knows that former President Ronald Reagan was widely photographed and even won the title of the “Most Nearly Perfect Male Figure Award” from the University of California in 1940 – but, that is not the correct answer!

If you guessed “B” for Gerald Ford, I’m just flabbergasted at your amazing ability to guess correctly! President-to-be, Gerald Ford, was once a model for Cosmopolitan and Look magazines in the 1940s. And in April of 1942, he graced the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine, dressed in his U. S. Navy uniform. The cover photo can still be viewed today and shows a young 29-year-old Gerald Ford kissing his girlfriend, at the time, Phyllis Brown, also a Cosmopolitan Magazine model. Gerald Ford would meet his future wife, Elizabeth Bloomer Warren, while working as a model. Ford’s wife, Elizabeth Bloomer Warren, was also a fashion model for John Robert Powers Agency as well as a dancer with the auxiliary troupe of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT WON THE “MOST NEARLY PERFECT MALE FIGURE AWARD”? A. John F. Kennedy B. Ronald Reagan C. Donald Trump

Amazing and fascinating details you never knew! But if you guessed “B” Ronald Reagan, well, you are quite the quiz-master! In 1940, our future American leader, Ronald Wilson Reagan, was voted the “Most Nearly Perfect Male Figure Award” from the University of California! Widely-photographed in swimwear, a young 29-year-old Ronald Reagan was the easy winner in a wide gallery of opposition! THE STATUE OF LIBERTY & THE LIBERTY BELL CAME FROM WHAT TWO COUNTRIES? A France and Italy B England and Germany C France and England

If you selected “C,” France and England, well, I’m impressed! The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the country of France on October 28, 1886, and the Liberty Bell originated in England! By the way, the formal name of our Statue of Liberty is “Liberty Enlightening the World.” Did you know that our precious statue is a representation of a goddess from Roman mythology? Well, it’s true! The Statue of Liberty is modeled after ‘Libertas,’ the Roman goddess of freedom! HER HEIGHT. She stands a full 151 feet in height from her base to the top of her torch and at the time of her dedication was the tallest iron structure on Earth! With the pedestal and foundation included in the measurement, her full height is 305 feet tall. WAISTLINE AND SHOE SIZE. Our Statue of Liberty has some very colorful fun facts that are very rarely mentioned. Here are some examples for your reading enjoyment! This colossal statue, nicknamed the Colossus of New York, has a gigantic 35-foot waistline, but don’t tell Jenny Craig that! And if the Statue of Liberty were to wear a pair of shoes, well, her shoe size would be a gigantic size “879.” Hmm, and I thought my grandpa had big feet at size 14!

SHE ACTUALLY MOVES! Did you know that winds actually move the Statue of Liberty? Well, it’s a fact! Winds of just 50 mph cause her to sway up to three inches and her torch moves as much as six inches!

SHE HAS BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING OVER 600 TIMES! Because of her singular height, our beloved Statue of Liberty has been a lightning rod at times and has been struck numerous times! It has been estimated that she has drawn around 600 lightning bolts since she was first put into place in the New World! The first time a photographer officially captured a bolt of lightning striking our Statue of Liberty was in 2010. The celebrated photo made world news! The photogra-

My, how times have changed. In 1962 the five top selling imports in the U.S. were Volkswagon with 192,700 sales, Renault, 29,763 sales, Triumph, 15967 sales, Volvo 13157 sales, and Mercedes Benz, 11075 sales. In 2017 the rulers of the roost were Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima.

Hey Guys, do you remember the first car you bought your wife? In my case it was a second marriage for both of us and it came with three kids for starters. So I yielded to emotion and bought her dream car----a 1956 Ford T-Bird. Picture this, three kids and bags of groceries in a two passenger car. It didn’t work, but the marriage did. Next month will be 53 years. Ain’t love grand?!

Back when bigger was better, this glitzy sleek coupe was the advent of the wide track cars. Powered by a 389 cubic inch V-8 it put out 300h.p, gas mileage was a non-contender at 10 mph pulling this 4233 pound swoopy beauty down the road. This model was named after a Salt Flat in Utah and had performance to live up to its name, with 0 to 60 in 8 seconds and a top speed of120 mph. Options at the time were A/C for $355.00, tinted glass, $35.00, electric antenna, $20.00 and a sportable radio for $140.00 with a Motorola Reverbaround speaker in the middle of the back. Base price was $2768.00. That was 59 years ago. What’s your feel for this week’s yesterdays car?

Answer: 1959 Pontiac Bonneville Sport Coupe

Kids & the Great Outdoors

Electronic devices and virtual reality can be great, but there’s nothing like experiencing nature first hand. Unfortunately, many youth living in inner cities and underserved communities never have the opportunity to really experience the outdoors. The benefits of recreating are many, including healthy exercise, learning about nature, acquiring new skills and making friends. To help make that happen, I voted in favor of Assembly Bill 2614, introduced by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D – Los Angeles), when it passed the Assembly on May 31st. The bill requires the Natural Resources Agency to compile a list of schools that can contract with non-profit organizations to provide transportation services. By allowing school busses that go unused on weekends or during vacation periods to provide transportation services for youth, better utilization of public resources will be encouraged. For many kids, shutting off the video game or the iPhone to go take a hike or go to the beach, camp or go fishing will open up possibilities and life

experiences that were never dreamed of.

AB 2614 is supported by the California Parks and Recreation Society, California Outdoor Recreation Partners, the Trust for Public Land, Outdoor Afro, Westfield State University and many other groups. I’m happy to report the bill has wide bi-partisan support and has now been forwarded to the Senate, where hearings are pending in the Natural Resources and Water Committee. With over 280 parks covering about 1.4 million acres in the State Parks System, including Palomar Mountain and Anza Borrego State Parks, we have ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our parks belong to all of us – let’s help make sure our kids get to use them. Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

pher, Jay Fine, said he had waited more than 40 years to capture the perfect shot! The image which was caught on film by the 58-year-old photographer was deeply emotional and mesmerizing for us Americans to witness our precious Statue of Liberty – standing resolute and strong – against one of the most powerful forces in nature!

HER SISTER STATUE FACES HER FROM ACROSS THE OCEAN! The Statue of Liberty is one of the most cherished gifts to the United States from the people of France. Many replicas were created and several occupy various French cities. But the most special replica is located at the Ill aux Cygnes, not far from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is one-fourth the size of America’s Statue of Liberty and, like its original American counterpart, it also sits within an island (Swan Island, in the middle of the River Seine). There is a very deep emotional story involving this replica in France. It originally faced towards the east but, somehow, this was thought to be wrong. So, it was carefully re-positioned so that it currently looks to the west, a touching tribute since it now officially faces in a new direction allowing her to look towards her bigger sister in New York.

The two sisters are now aligned to look towards one another, today.

The Liberty Bell, which remains a strong symbol of freedom, originated in England and at 2,080 pounds is presently located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Unlike the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell was not a gift from England, but was merely commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack in 1752. The bell was cast with lettering from the Old Testament Bible with the words: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants therof.” (Book of Leviticus, 25:10) A little known fact is that, at one time, the Liberty Bell was welltraveled! It’s true! Beginning in 1885, the City of Philadelphia allowed the famous bell to be put on display at various patriotic events and celebrations! This immortal symbol of America cracked the first time it was rung but was recast by local artisans, twice, for the same reason. Both the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell remain among our most treasured icons from France and England, respectively.

SUMMATION. There is much to learn about our beautiful country and its unique and colorful heritage, and I only hope this article whets your appetite to continue your own voyage into learning about details and exciting facts about this great nation of ours. We Americans love to have fun and we love, cherish, and embrace the

bright sunshine of democracy which we all revel in. Someone once said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

I second that notion.

We may not have a perfect country, nor a perfect government, but we are still the model and envy of the world today. Despite our flaws, domestic issues, and off-setting values, we are singularly and supremely the most shining example of what can be.

We are the 3rd planet from the Sun. But our great nation is #1 on this spinning Blue Marble we call Earth. Regarding our promise and potential for the future, Abraham Lincoln once said: “We are the last best hope of the world.”

The Rise and Fall of Napoleon

Napoleon Bonaparte emerged and became emperor of France following the chaos of the French Revolution.

After King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were executed, chaos reigned over France. Neighboring nations such as Austria, Prussia (Germany), Spain, and Great Britain declared war on France. After the Revolution’s "Reign of Terror,” a young artillery officer quickly rose through the ranks capturing the hearts of his countrymen much as he had overwhelmed his enemies on the field of battle. Napoleon was quick to capitalize on his popularity. He became known as “The Little Corporal,” which referred to his short stature and the rank from which he started in the Grand Army.

In 1805, Napoleon lost a critical sea battle at Cape Trafalgar off the coast of Spain. Realizing his Grand Army could never cross the English Channel as long as the Royal Navy controlled the seas, Napoleon marched his Grand Army across Europe, invading Russia. Napoleon out-ran his supply lines, and being ill-equipped for winter and Russia's "scorched earth" tactic (burning everything and then retreating, leaving nothing for the enemy to survive on), Napoleon had to retreat from Moscow in 1812. He entered Russia with 600,000 troops, but only 40,000 survived to return home. Napoleon returned to France where he was stripped of his crown and exiled to Elba, a small, desolate Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy. Napoleon was given a personal guard of 600 French troops, but the sea around Elba was patrolled by the Royal Navy. He managed to escape and return to power. In 1815, Napoleon led his reorganized Grand Army against the British and the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in present-day Belgium. Once again in defeat he was stripped of his power and exiled to the even smaller and more desolate British-owned island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic off the coast of Africa where he died mysteriously on or before May 15, 1821. It's long been a debate whether he died of natural causes or was murdered.

Napoleon's influence is still around us today. Every nation Napoleon conquered or controlled drives its vehicles on the right side of the road. The British drive on the left. The reason has been argued, but the most common explanation is that Napoleon wanted his cavalry to be able to draw their swords and fight as they road down a road with the weapon on the “outside of the column, instead of the inside. It makes sense if everyone was right-handed. Still, like his death, no one knows for sure. Ask any Brit today and they’ll explain, “You Americans drive on the right side of the road, whereas we British drive on the ‘correct’ side.

which was France's Louisiana capital city, north and west to the Rockies and Canada were included. It became known as "The Louisiana Purchase.” The selling price was a staggering $15 million, less than 3 cents an acre. Today, nearly all of this land produces enough food to feed millions of people around the world.

Firmly in control of the army, which meant he controlled the nation, in 1804, Napoleon was crowned Emperor of France. During the coronation ceremony in Paris' historic Notre Dame Cathedral, the Little Corporal did something that shocked everyone witnessing the ceremony: just as the pope was about to place the crown on his head, Napoleon grabbed it and put it on himself. He would later explain that no mortal man was above the Emperor, so how could anyone but Napoleon himself place the crown? With Napoleon firmly in control, France went on the offensive, conquering nearly all of Europe and much of Russia. Because of early explorers and fur trappers, France controlled half of what is today the continental United States, plus much of the middle portion of settled Canada. The only thing stopping him from complete European domination was the British Royal Navy, at that time, the most powerful in the world. In order to raise money, Napoleon sold all of France’s territory to the United States in 1803. The prairie land between the Mississippi River from New Orleans,

Climate Action Plan Update

The City of Escondido is about to embark on a comprehensive update to our Climate Action Plan (CAP). The purpose of a CAP is to guide local policies that address climate change and impacts and create a sustainable, healthy and livable community. Our first step is to measure the City’s baseline greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and establish target reductions. This work will be done primarily by technical

Tree Center’s summer camp will incorporate nutrition education, gardening, cooking, art, and movement throughout the curriculum and reinforce these subjects through hands-on activities that allow students to practice smart decision-making skills. This healthy environment combined with culinary art will provide the children with opportunities to gain knowledge of and practice positive behaviors. Using many teaching strategies, this camp will play a powerful role in influencing the student’s physical activity and food choices they make at home and beyond. This camp is open to children ages 6-12. The camp is Monday-Friday, July 23-27, from 9:30am to 3pm. The Catering Day is Wednesday, July 25th. The camp takes place at the Palomar Universalist Unitarian Fellowship, 1600 Buena Vista Drive, Vista, 92081. For more information, contact Nancy Marks at info@willowtreecenter.org or 760.458.0150. Patches, an 8-year-old Domestic Short Hair mix, is a handsome cat looking for a loving home to call his own.

It has been a long road to recovery for Patches, but this sweet kitty is now ready for adoption! Patches lived with a large, painful bladder stone for over a year before being relinquished to us. Presumably due to the pain of the bladder stone, he started chewing the tip of his tail. After we removed the stone and the injured part of his tail, he has been a very comfortable kitty who loves snuggles and will purr and make muffins in your lap. His demeanor has changed entirely and he deserves a second chance in a happy home, pain-free. Will you give this lovable, snuggly cat a home? You can meet him at the Escondido Campus today! His adoption fee includes his neuter, permanent microchip identification, current vaccinations, 30 days worry free insurance from Trupanion Insurance and a certificate for a free veterinary exam! Patches is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3450 E Valley Parkway. To learn more about making him part of your family, please call (619) 299-7012.

Unplugging and Recharging

Someone is always suggesting that we “unplug.” Get away from cell phones, tablets, computers and our “connection” to the world. Yet, I find myself “plugging in” more and more—and not to the Internet.

More and more things in my house are powered by rechargeable batteries. Tools, cameras, appliances and all the “connected” things like cell phones and e-readers. Some of you even have automobiles that require recharging.

It is my e-reader that gets most interactive when it needs recharging. As the percentage of charge goes down, I get a screen message, “Connect to charger or turn off now.” The next message is stronger and the back light

Recharging electronics is a 21st century problem, but long ago Jesus talked about recharging when he said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The Message translation says, “You’ll recover your life.” Jesus practiced what he preached. In the gospels, we often read of Jesus retreating “to a solitary place” to pray. To meet with the Father, to recharge for the ministries that were coming. He learned this from God who, after a busy six days creating the universe, rested on the seventh day and taught us both the rhythm of work and rest and the need to recharge on a regular basis. There are all kinds of symptoms, diagnoses and names that describe going too long between rechargings. And an equal number of reasons and/or excuses for why we don’t do it. The reason for taking the time to recharge is simple. God created us to recharge. Jesus practiced recharging and taught us to recover our life in Him. Don’t let your available power reduce to single digits. Plug in to the power of Jesus and recharge.

A visitor to Israel attended a recital and concert at the Moscovitz Auditorium. He was quite impressed with the architecture and the acoustics. He inquired of the tour guide, "Is this magnificent auditorium named after Chaim Moscovitz, the famous Talmudic scholar?" "No," replied the guide. "It is named after Sam Moscovitz, the writer." "Never heard of him. What did he write?" "A big check," replied the guide. •••• Crabs

An attorney boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs, and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him.

She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator.

He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out.

Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior. Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, "Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please raise your hand?" Not one hand went up... so she took them home and ate them. Two lessons here:

Tired from waiting for their overdue baby, my daughter and her husband broke the monotony one night with a trip to the movies. My daughter went inside to get seats while my son-in-law bought popcorn and drinks in the lobby. Paying for the refreshments, my son-inlaw knocked over his soda. The clerk mopped up the mess and refilled his cup. Rattled, he then joined his wife. Talking over the background music, he dramatically described his embarrassing episode. One of his expressive gestures upset the bucket of popcorn. He sheepishly headed back to the lobby. When he was out of earshot, the woman sitting next to my daughter turned and said, "You're not going to let him hold the baby, are you?" Project Picture

My 12 year old daughter asked me, "Mom, do you have a baby picture of yourself? I need it for a school project." I gave her one without thinking to ask what the project was.

The City has been successful in being awarded two grants regarding bicycles.

The first grant, Environmental Study for the Coastal Rail Trail across Loma Alta Creek would extend the existing Coastal Rail Trail limits in the City of Oceanside by creating a Class I bicycle and pedestrian path that spans across the Loma Alta Creek between Oceanside Boulevard and Morse Street. This connection would improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility and create a relatively safe route for pedestrians and

Microsoft Win 10, Part I of II.

Our readers often comment on our apparent antipathy toward Microsoft. It is true that we have a love/hate relationship with Microsoft. Every day we are plagued by the problems that Microsoft’s constant OS (operating systems) updates create for our home and small business customers. Corrupting and losing files and programs, crashing computers and rendering important programs and devices obsolete are common results of Microsoft’s, from a users point of view, unneeded, destructive and unwanted OS update programs. Microsoft tells users that these updates are for their own good, that they improve performance

Obituary

Susana Jauregui

Microsoft has long known that its core business of supplying OS (operating systems) and applications for PCs is shrinking and that it needs to find a new source of revenue if it is to continue to thrive and grow. Microsoft has had a monopoly position in PC OS and applications for nearly 40 years. 2015 marked the high water mark in Microsoft’s revenues at $94 billion. In 2016 and 2017 revenues were under $90 billion.

A part of Microsoft’s has been to leverage its dominance in the personal computer business into a profitable future in cloud based services and applications. Windows 10 was the latest component in this strategy. Win 10 is designed to transition Microsoft’s customer base into the “cloud.” In order to accommodate the evolving cloud technology, Windows 10 has been forced to evolve along with it. That’s the reason Win10 is constantly being modified and “updated.” This creates compatibility issues for Win 10 users every time Microsoft implements a new “build.” There have been five new “builds” since July of 2015. Microsoft is aware that each new build creates problems and expensive repairs for some users but the feel they must keep up with changes up or risk losing ground to cloud rivals like Google, Apple and Amazon. The biggest impediment to the execution of their Win 10 strategy is their own OS, Win 7. Microsoft

created a massive problem for themselves with the highly aggressive “free Windows 10 upgrade program” They weedled, cajoled, threatened and eventually forced millions of happy Win7, to accept the free Win 10 “upgrade.” Now the Win 10 “updates” are beginning to clash with the older hardware and software on the Win7 and Win8 PCs that accepted the free Win10 “upgrade.” Today OS usage is fairly evenly split between Win 10 and Win 7. There are about 500 million user of each OS. In April and May Microsoft released the latest Win10 “update” (Build 1803). In the past month Microsoft’s Win10 dropped 2% in market share while Win7 gained a corresponding amount. This shift was caused by Win 10 upgrade users choosing to go back to Win7 as the latest Win10 updates

The overwhelming majority of Win7 users saw no benefit in taking the free Win10 upgrade. Many were “upgraded” involuntarily by Microsoft. Most have regretted it. The mantra of the Win7 hold-outs has been “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

Microsoft desperately needs universal acceptance of Win10 in order to fully implement their cloud strategy. Could it be that Microsoft is deliberately trying to “break” Windows 7? It would certainly be to their benefit if something came along to sabotage Win7. Is Microsoft trying to murder their own child? Tune in next week for exciting conclusion

The goals of the project were to digitalize records in the Valley Center Cemetery from Rolodex to a modern spreadsheet, and to upload complete and accurate information to Find-A-Grave. Now and future generations will be able to locate a family member’s grave, and it’s also a useful tool for researchers and genealogists. It is a positive reflection of our community that people all over the country will be able to find information about people buried in Valley Center Cemetery because the records are so complete. This is a win/win for everyone. As the project members worked through the Rolodex cards, hundreds of records were researched online so that essential data could

be uploaded. The cemetery was walked innumerable times, hundreds of headstones were photographed; photos were edited and uploaded to Find a Grave. The spreadsheets contain over 2,000 entries but because paperwork wasn’t always done in the early days of the cemetery, the actual number of people buried there is unknown. (Records go back to the 1800s) Louise Kelly, President of the Cemetery Board, stated that several times when digging a grave, a body would already be found in it and there would be no record of the person. “Because of this, estimates range from 2,000 to 4,000 number of persons buried there,” states Ms. Bartholomew. The original list of veterans buried in the cemetery was 42 when the DAR first began placing flags on the graves for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Through their research, the Project Team has identified over 190 veterans and the discoveries continue. This research led to the promotion of the Wreaths Across America project and national recognition of the Valley Center Cemetery and our local veterans. The project has come to an end with the acceptance of the newly digitalized and cross referenced records presented to Ms. Kelly who accepted them for the cemetery board. The members of the Cemetery Project Team included DAR members: Sharon Bartholomew, Susan Harris, Linda Perez, Margaret Simonsen, and Wendy Zengschmidt.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF DOLORES VANDENBERG Case No. 37-2018-00027500 PR-PW-CTL To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate or both, of Dolores Vandenberg. A Petition for Probate has been filed by Stephanie Vandenberg in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, 1100 Union St., San Diego, Ca., 92101, Central Courthouse. The Petition for Probate requests that Stephanie Vandenberg be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and codicils are available for examination in the files kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal repreesentative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representattive will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed actions.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: July 24,2018 Time: 11 a.m . Dept: 504 Room 504 Address of court: Same as noted above. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in Section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statues and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a peson interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petioner: Brianna Bocian SBN 256914 1901 1st Ave #1071 San Diego, CA. 92101 619.365.5310 6/14, 6/21, and 6/28/2018
