“Where ya goin’?” this concrete slab asked.

On a warm June evening in 1957, along with 83-other young men I boarded a Military Air Transport Service, Cargomaster, bound for Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. I was seventeen, a week out of high school. In the seat next to me, was Gerald R. Hermann. Soon to be twenty-two, Herm, has hardly left my side since we met two days earlier at the Greyhound Bus Station in St. Louis.

“I’ve got a free hotel room somewheres.” His Adam’s apple bobs.

He shoves paper at me. “I’m off to be a Marine. Could ya help me? We ain’t got big cities in South Dakota.

Name’s Herm.” His grip hurts my hand.

After a breakfast of bacon, eggs, and coffee – Herm helps himself to my toast - we walk to the Induction Center, along with probably twenty other young men, all “Off to be Marines.”

ing and swabbing the restroom under the critical eye of a Marine three-striper, or talking with other recruits, Herm leaves my side only when we line up in alphabetical order for physicals.

When I step across the yellow line and place my feet in the white shoe imprints outlined on the green concrete floor, raise my right hand and swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, Herm’s next to me. On the cattle car ride to the airport, his lanky 6-foot, 3-inch, 180-pound body dwarves my 5-foot 7-inch, 155-pound frame.

In truth, every recruit there looks at least fifteen pounds heavier, 5 inches taller, and much tougher than me.

What have I gotten myself into? *** Somewhere over Colorado, a young stewardess, dressed in crisp Air Force blues, distributes stale ham and cheese or soggy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Herm has two of each. Later, he crosses and uncrosses his legs, a worried look on his face.

“There’s a head in back,” I say.

“A what?”

“A restroom.”

He bolts past me. “Just in time,” he says on his return. “My first time to fly. Always wondered how ya did

What a challenge we must be: a Missouri high school graduate, a South Dakota farmer, Detroit street runners, Kansas wheat growers, two Nebraska Mormons, a twentyfive-year-old auto parts salesman from Galina, Illinois, a church organist from Walker, Tennessee.

Later, we’ll be joined by two Navaho Indians from Arizona, and Marine Reservists from Guam, and a Canadian Army private. Tall, short, skinny, or fat, we stumble into the mess hall, wearing Marine Corps sweat shirts, green caps hiding new burr haircuts and scarf down cold pancakes, reconstituted eggs, mystery meat sausage, prunes or oranges, warm milk and a brown liquid euphemistically called coffee.

We meet our drill instructors and march to the Quonset huts that will be our home the next fourteen weeks. You guessed it. Herm, and I are in the same platoon. We graduate boot camp on a Friday are bussed to Camp San Onofre, on massive Camp Pendleton, for Infantry Training: 50-mile hikes in full gear, simulated fire fights, advanced first aid clinics, hand grenade nomenclature classes, and booby trap demonstrations. Three weeks into this routine our Military Occupation Status, (MOS) is post-

We graduate in early September.

While other Marines scatter to exotic-sounding duty stations: Hilo, Hawaii, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Treasure Island, California, Herm and 3 other unlucky bastards, and myself head for Marine Barracks, Point Mugu, a top-secret missile base near Oxnard, in Central California.

There, Herm and I are assigned to 2nd Platoon, topside. When we stow our gear, he points to a rack.

“Mind takin’ the top bunk? I’m afraid of heights.” *** Our racks, beds to civilians, are WW II vintage. Our gear lockers are dented. The locks won’t lock, with rusting doors and bent shelves, offering as much security as a cardboard box. Other barracks amenities are just as grand - showers with only two stalls; concrete flooring peeking through dirty gray paint.

The back ladder (stairs to civilians), creaks and groans when stepped on, hand rails long lost. Each morning we assemble for roll call and P.T., on a parking lot with holes that could swallow a jeep.

Duty at Point Mugu - Headquarters, Pacific Missile Range - follows a Port and Starboard regimen, i.e., one platoon stands duty for twentyfour hours then relieved by the other platoon. Our days are structured around six guard shifts, each four-

When It Rains, It Pours

The unusually rainy winter we have had in Phoenix this year reminded me of a joke some of our Seattle, Washington relatives related a few years ago. It seems a lady moved from Phoenix to Seattle and when she arrived it was raining. While she moved in, it rained. The next day it rained... and the next.

After several rainy days, while standing on her porch, she noticed a young boy on the porch of her neighbor's house. Trying not to sound too depressed, in a cheerful voice she called over to the lad, "Hi son, I'm your new neighbor."

"Hi," the boy called back and waved.

"Say, son, does it ever stop raining here?" she asked.

With a look of consternation, the youngster replied, "Lady, how would I know? I'm only six years old!"

In a Purdue University classroom recently, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United State.

It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age

However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president.

The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?"

Yep, these are the same kinds of 18year-olds that are now voting in our elections! They breed, and they walk among us...

hours in duration. Liberty call for the off-duty platoon begins at 1600 and ends at 2400. Friday, the offduty platoon stands inspection, with liberty until 2400 Sunday night.

Maybe six months into this numbing routine, after a day of close order drill, judo practice and a sixmile run, I hit the shower. Other Marines splash on Afta Shave and dash for the Liberty bus. My usual routine is shower, eat chow at the mess hall, grab the 1730 bus to town, and hole up at the Oxnard library. California bars vigorously enforce the no alcohol for minor’s law; beach sand sticks to me like flour to a chicken wing, the fabled California sun broils my skin, so the library is my refuge.

One night I stay in the barracks, stretching out on my bunk in sweat clothes, devouring “Exodus,” a novel by former Marine, Leon Uris.

Herm showers and slumps on his foot locker in his skivvies, a towel draped over his shoulders.

“You like the marines?”

“Better than cooking at a greasy spoon.” My fate if I’d stayed in my hometown. “How about you? You like it?”

“You bet. First time ever I don’t worry about bein’ yanked from bed and get beat on.” He stands, his towel falls. When he bends to pick

you can't smoke any of them.

“Who’s Wanda?”

“My sister. Sixteen. She’ll be the first in our family to graduate. If Dad don’t get her.” *** A few days later, Herm waits when I come out of the shower, shortly after 1200 hours. “Ya got 1600 watch, right?” He wears the glasses his recruiter promised.

I nod.

“I wanna send an allotment to the bank so Dad won’t worry ‘bout the farm payment. That way he won’t drink, and Wanda won’t get beat up.

Could ya help me fill out the papers?”

His manner is so genuine, so innocent, that I find myself nodding, knowing full well I’m going against the adage to make only acquaintances in the Corps, not friends.

American Cultural Organization (FACO) in partnership with the Oceanside Public Library, and Tri-City Medical Center, as its major sponsor. This festivity is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. True to its theme, “Celebrate Culture, Inspire Harmony”, the attendees will have a better appreciation and understanding of the Philippine culture in this celebration. There will be lots of Filipino food, handicrafts plus numerous vendors of various cuisine, products and services, and lively entertainment.

The event highlights the different cultural dances of the Philippines representing its three big groups of islands – Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. There will be a parade of colorful costumes and competition for the 2018 Little Miss, Pre-teen and Mrs. Fil-Am. Fil-Am performers of various arts will entertain the public during the Pinoy’s Got Talent Show. In addition, there will be special guests like R&B/Pop Singer Leo Villamil and Rockstar performer Malou Toler. To conclude the celebration will be a one-hour lively performance of the Red, White and Blue band where the public can dance!

In line with the association’s goal to provide youth education, there will be awarding of scholarship grants to five (5) deserving FilAm high school senior students in North San Diego County and five (5) high school students in the Philippines. Donations to the Oceanside Public Library and Oceanside Senior Center will be given. The event offers all-day crafts and activities for children at the Library’s patio. Darna, the Wonder Woman of the Philippines, will be in costume to meet the kids for photo shoots and talk about the heroine. Inside the library will be Philippine handicraft displays and video about Filipino food cooking and history. Now in existence for almost 40 years, FACO is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization whose platform includes youth education, disaster relief, and preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Among its big projects in the Philippines are providing scholarships, sponsoring a classroom and building a multi-purpose hall and evacuation center in Tacloban, Leyte. FACO is also a major donor for the House of the Philippines project in Balboa Park and the Oceanside Public Library. The association is proud of its cultural programs like providing

At the Company Office, I point out to him that once the allotment is deducted from his pay, he’ll have $6.18 left over for the entire month.

He grins, shrugs and signs. *** One Monday morning, half-way through P.T., a semi-trailer stops in front of the barracks. Workmen drop cartons of gear lockers, bunk beds, desks, and cans of green paint on the sidewalk. The Executive Officer assembles both platoons and announces a contest: The platoon that can paint their quarters and move in the new furniture the fastest, wins a four-day Liberty Pass.

It’s a good contest, but my platoon has duty; 1st Platoon has training.

Also, our regular Platoon Sergeant is on leave, so I’m acting in his place, though only a corporal. (In the Corps, you often work above your pay grade.) I’m sure 1st Platoon will spend their day rehabbing their unit, not training. We can give them a battle, but they should win the competition easily.

By now Herm has a reputation as a cumshaw artist - a guy who ‘finds’ under-utilized tools, typewriters, even furniture - and redirects them for better use with him, or his platoon. Herm has also demonstrated his physical strength. On Burn Detail, he ripped up thick volumes of classified and sensitive material, including the base telephone book, bare-handed, while the Officer of the Day looked on in stunned disbelief.

I call my Fire Teams together.

“Team One, carry out the old furniture then scrub the deck. When it dries, apply the paint. Team Two, arrange all the new stuff into groups near the back steps. When the decks dry, Team Three, carry everything up, but take them from their cartons only when they’re arranged properly.”

Herm smiles like he does before asking me for help. “Got it covered.”

But, he has watch from 0800 to 1200. Before he jumps into the Guard Truck, he and another marine drag two industrial fans up to our squad bay. Where Herm found them, I don’t know or care.

I’ve got to see the flag is raised in front of Company Office, that the previous shift’s log book is reviewed and signed off on, that guards are relieved and new sentries posted. Marines not on duty need chow and Sick Call held. The

When I go topside, the empty barracks echoes; old furniture is outside, new gear at the ready. Herm’s industrial fans dry the freshly-painted deck. When Herm comes off duty, he’ll attack the un-opened cartons with his long arms and cornhusking tough hands.

Meanwhile, 1st Platoon waits for paint to dry, since they have no fans to speed the process. To keep everyone busy, their NCO’s direct that cartons be opened on the grass. This results in cardboard clogged entryways and little progress. In the spirit of Marine Brotherhood when our floors are dry, Herm ‘loans’ his fans to 1st Platoon. After cancelling Liberty Call, they grudgingly move in new furniture.

We win the four-day Liberty Pass hands down, thanks in a large part to Gerald R. “Herm” Hermann. *** Shortly after “The Big Remod,” as our barracks transformation was called, Herm comes up as I shave.

“Got a letter. Dad came in drunk and tried to beat up Wanda. Mom drove her to Uncle Don’s. Dad says he’ll teach Wanda a thing or two when he finds her. Any advice?”

The Paper • Page 4 • June 7, 2018 Fatal Traffic Accident Escondido

On 06/03/18 at 0016 hours, Escondido Police dispatch received a call regarding a vehicle Vs. pedestrian collision in the area of 1000 E. Washington Ave. Police and Escondido Fire / Paramedic units responded and located a 32-yearold female pedestrian who had suffered serious injuries. The female was transported to Palomar Hospital where she was rushed into surgery for two broken femurs, multiple internal and head injuries.

The female later died at the hospital from the extensive injuries.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling west on Washington Ave. The female pedestrian was crossing north on Washington Ave near Beech St. with a 33-year-old male companion.

The driver of the pickup swerved to avoid the male pedestrian and struck the female pedestrian.

The driver was evaluated at the scene of the collision for intoxication and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. The driver was identified as Joel Francisco Juan. Juan is 32 years old and a resident of Escondido. Juan

was later booked at the Vista Detention Center on felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.

The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer N. Kluka of the Traffic Division.

Candidate for Supervisor Cleared of Allegations

A campaign finance complaint against county supervisorial candidate Jim Desmond is being shelved after the attorneys hired to review it determined there wasn’t cause for investigation.

Desmond, now mayor of San Marcos, is running for the 5th District seat that will become open when county Supervisor Bill Horn terms out this year.

Ana Rosvall, a local Realtor and member of the Twin Oaks Valley Community Sponsor Group, filed the complaint with the San Marcos City Clerk on May 25, alleging that Desmond accepted donations in his bid for supervisor that violate city campaign finance laws.

The city appointed attorneys with the firm Best, Best & Krieger to investigate. On Friday, they issued a letter stating that they would not

“We find that the complaint does not present probable cause to believe that a violation… has occurred,” attorneys Gary Schons and Shawn Hagerty stated.

“Therefore, we are closing your complaint without further action.”

Desmond said he was pleased with the quick response, and the decision to close the complaint.

“It goes to show that city campaign rules don’t apply to county regulations, which is what we thought all along, and we were vindicated,” he said. “So we’re moving the campaign full speed ahead.”

Schons and Hagerty said the complaint was not valid for several reasons. They said there’s a one-year statute of limitations on such complaints, and many of the alleged violations had occurred outside that time window, or would be past that limit by election day on Tuesday.

They also said that the monetary limits on campaigns apply only to municipal elections, not county races. Finally, they said there isn’t probable cause to believe that Desmond’s actions materially benefited the donors.

As for Mr. Rick Bova's dissatisfaction (published in The Paper 5/12/18), it's highly ironic (and amusing) how Mr. Bova falls into his "own trap" of defining fairness in critiquing the PC article.

C., I hardly know, so his high school student sister, can take refuge from a drunken father who beats her up. The amazing thing is, it worked. Herm got his loan. *** Shortly after Herm’s phone call, I go to the Company Office to have write a letter of recommendation for a squad member arrested for shoplifting women’s underwear. While waiting, I read new notices on the bulletin board. One is a personnel memorandum. It says the Corps has a critical need for Marines to serve at overseas embassies. After signing my statement, I tell the clerk I want to apply for Embassy Duty.

He hands me the memo. “Knock yourself out, Fucker. But, don’t take it out of the office.” *** I complete the application on the spot. I need letters of recommendation from two officers and my Commanding Officer’s signature. I knock on the Executive Officer’s door, hoping to set an appointment for the next day.

The captain asks, “How can I help you, Corporal?”

I show him the memo.

Twenty minutes later, I head back to the barracks, my request for Embassy Duty winging its way to D.C. by Official U.S. Marine Corps mail. My life changed forever. * ** Two weeks before Christmas 1959, my transfer is approved. I have ten days to report to Marine Security Guard School, Washington, D.C. Passport photos must be taken, dress blues purchased and tailored, forms, endless forms, filled out in triplicate. An in-depth physical and dental exam awaits me and an interview with a Navy psychologist, plus immunization shots for malaria and small pox. And, regular duty pulled.

Friday night, before I ship out Saturday, I pack. The barracks is quiet, since it’s Liberty Weekend. I slip socks over my boondockers and set my duffle bag on my foot locker.

Herm’s on his bunk, his face buried in a pillow, his body jerks.

Herm tells me he’s tried to convince his Dad to rotate crops, charge hunters to hunt pheasants on their land, and that in grade school Herm played football and his Dad was so proud when Herm bulled through the other team for a touchdown, that he clapped him on his back and hugged him and that his Mom cried when she dropped him off at the bus station when he left for Marine Corps boot camp. *** I sleep my way across country on a Greyhound, get off Christmas Eve morning in St. Louis, and call my Sis, hoping she’ll invite me to spend Christmas Day with her family.

When she doesn’t, I walk to Union Station and buy a ticket to D.C.

“You okay?”

He sits up. His eyes are red, his face swollen.

“What’s wrong, Marine?”

“Wanda. Dad busted her rib.

Blacked her eye. She quit school and ran off to Sioux Falls to be married.” His face is white as his skivvy top. “If I’d stayed home, he’d have me to beat on not her.”

I dropped Herm a line from the embassy in Teheran, including a stamped, addressed envelope to make his reply easier. One never comes.

“You did what you thought best.”

That seemed the right thing to say.

“Yer leavin’ makes it worse.”

“You’ll be fine, Marine.” Then I ask, “You read, but can’t write?”

I wonder, whatever happened to Wanda? *** In September 1997 I visited Sioux Falls, South Dakota as a consultant.

I found myself in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people, a long weekend stretching out before me.

A bank of phones lines one wall of the hotel. Out of curiosity, I open a directory. Gerald R. Hermann is listed. Route 3, Vermillion, South Dakota.

At the concierge’s desk when I inquire about Vermillion, she calls over a hotel employee. “I go by there twice a day,” he says. “You got a rental?”

I nod.

“I’m off at 4. Follow me. I’ll take you right to his gate.” *** A gravel road leads to a white house under a stand of trees. Up close, the ribs of a snow fence punch the gray sky. The yard is weed-grown. The back porch and middle part of the house shows evidence of a fire, the siding sootstained, windows boarded up. A mobile home sits in the shadow of an outbuilding.

I let the medical mistake slide.

“You ever marry?”

“Nope. Who’d want a broke down guy like me?” His goofy country laugh is just a memory.

He glances toward the trailer. “I’d invite ya in, but ain’t got no furniture. Just a bed, chair, stove, TV.”

“What more do you need?” I tap his shoulder. “I wondered about Wanda. Now I know.”

I drove back to Sioux Falls, stocked up on books, Diet Cokes and Planter’s Peanuts for a week end of reading. It wasn’t so long after all.

A gruff voice answers my knock, “Who’s there?”

“Platoon One Sixty-three on the road,” I yell, in my best Drill Instructor’s voice.

The door opens a crack. “Who are ya?”

Did You Notice the make of car Prince Harry drove Meghan Markle to their evening wedding party? It was a 1968 Jaguar “E” Type Roadster. What we didn’t know. It was a unique electric conversion. We get a touch of the past with a hint of the future. It was a North American series with the steering wheel on the left hand side. Is that a clue to whom will be doing the driving in that family?

When I was in the automobile business I wrote a car column for 40 years. Looking back I found an article I wrote in June of 2002…only 16 years ago and I quote, “Have the Big 3 (GM, Ford, & Chrysler) lost the car market? There are 545 car models on the U.S. market and only 198 (36.3%) of them come from the Big Three. In the month of May Ford sold 85,052. Look at it this way, Toyota out sold every domestic brand except Ford.

Another 1043 sales and Toyota would have been number one.

We Americans have seen cars like the Model T, Chevy Impala, and the Ford Taurus rule the roost. In recent years Toyota Camry and Honda Accord have been the crowing roosters, moving into first place.” All this was back in 2002 and it has only gotten progressively more lopsided.

Tesla just got a negative call on the braking capabilities of the Model 3 by Consumers Reports. Elon Musk was able to update deficiency that basically overnight to an acceptable rating. That is new technology at work…truly remarkable. Tesla will also offer a performance version of the Model 3, but with a price increase from $35,000 to $78,000. This performance version goes 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph, and has a 310 mile range on a single charge.

“Not too hot.”

Herm comes down the steps one at a time. “Bad knees,” he says.

He wears heavy boots. Blue jeans with no belt. A checkered shirt with one sleeve rolled-up. A wicked vshaped scar creases his right cheek.

His hair is uncombed, thinning, sprinkled with gray.

His hand is gnarled and cold when we shake. He points to his hip.

“Broke it last month. A drill hammer damn near did me in.”

“Sorry, you were hurt. Other than that, you okay?”

“Yeah.” He squints his pale blue eyes. “After ya left for wherever it was . . . : “Teheran.”

“Yeah, Dad came home drunk. Ran over a steer. Lost control. Hit a tree. Split his head open, broke his neck. Froze in his own blood.

Mom asked the Marines to let me out. They did. Been here ever since. She died five year ago March. Died hanging out clothes.”

“You’ve had some tough luck.

How about Wanda? She okay?”

“Died. Cat Scratch Fever. Doctors treated her for the flu. That’s wrong to do with Cat Scratch. Left two daughters. Husband Russ remarried. Raised the girls. Lives up ‘round Brookings.”

Loopholes that allow convicted rapists and human traffickers to walk free before completing their sentences must be closed; criminal use and possession of firearms must be reined in.

Thousands of cases of sex trafficking are reported in the U.S. each year. Unfortunately, San Diego County has been identified as a major hub for this despicable criminal enterprise. That’s why I’m supporting legislation that would add human trafficking involving child prostitution and forced prostitution to the list of violent felonies. The bill would also make these crimes a “strike” under the state’s Three Strikes Law. Other bills combating human trafficking would increase court ordered protections for victims, require registration of persons as sex offenders who solicit prostitution from a minor, increase mandates for reporting suspected sexual assault of a child, and provide critical funding to prosecute human trafficking.

I am also supporting legislation to increase prison terms for felons convicted of a second or subsequent offense involving a firearm.

Prison terms would be lengthened to 4, 5 or 6 years in jail from current sentences that range from 16 months to 3 years. I also fully support a budget proposal to increase funding for the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS), which tracks felons in order to seize illegally possessed weapons.

Currently, the state has a backlog of 10,000 people who illegally possess firearms; last year only 408 weapons were retrieved.

The first priority of government is public safety. Convicted felons should not be in possession of firearms, and human traffickers and rapists must always be treated as the violent criminals they are. I am fighting to close these loopholes in current law to increase public safety in our communities.

A Unique Summer Activity for Kids and Families in San Marcos - “I learned to sew on a sewing machine and I made this!”

That’s what hundreds of quilt shops across America and Canada hope to hear from kids age 6-14 in their communities this summer.

Local quilt shop proprietors like Sewing Machines Plus in San Marcos are welcoming kids to their shops, June 21 through October 31, by participating in Row by Row Junior.

It’s the kids’ version of the widely popular summertime travel event for quilt making fans known as Row by Row Experience.

Kids visit shops in person and collect a free sewing pattern designed just for them to make. They’ll find encouragement and be inspired by the colorful, creative world of sewing right in their own hometown. “We want to introduce kids to the intrinsic benefits of learning how to sew,” says Janet Lutz, creator of Row by Row Experience.

“Making things on today’s modern sewing machines incorporates all the elements of STEM education in an artful way that builds self-esteem and perseverance.”

When offered for the first time in 2017, Row by Row Junior was the largest initiative of its kind ever attempted in the sewing industry.

This year, six new patterns and project ideas designed around the theme “Sew Musical” will appeal to kids and their families.

“Fostering intergenerational relationships and learning to sew at home is important to the Row by Row Junior program,” says Lutz.

San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy Has Big News - The Safari Park, through the San Diego Global Wildlife Conservancy, announces that Victoria, one of six female southern white rhinos who live at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center at the Safari Park, is pregnant! Victoria is the first rhino in the Zoo Global’s 102-year history to become pregnant through artificial insemination. Though Victoria and her embryo are southern white rhinos, this is huge news for her northern white rhino cousins. Victoria is part of the one-of-akind rescue program to save the northern white rhino: with only 2 left on earth, both of them female, these gentle giants have been poached to the brink of extinction.

But we have a plan to bring them back using cutting-edge science and decades of animal care expertise. Victoria’s pregnancy is an important first step, proving the science is working. Victoria is only about 9 weeks along, and rhino pregnancies last 16-18 months. It’s early, the road ahead is long, but it’s exciting to share this wonderful, milestone news.

North County Homeless Summit Update – The Alliance for Regional Solutions has an update on the goals and actions that have come from the Summit.

The goals set at the Summit are: Small group discussion of 3-5-year goals, categorized; 1. Create a coordinated outreach plan to connect people to services; 2. Increase housing availability for low income and homeless people and identify alternative sources of funding; 3. Develop a homelessness advocacy and education network for North County to engage city, state, federal reps, law enforcement and the public; 4.

Regional approach to reducing entry (and length of homelessness) through prevention and diversion and programs and services; and 5. Develop a coordinated regional “resources guide” and training. Two task forces were formed after the summit. Part I -- Jefferson Davis: A Man of Many Faces

He was a West Point graduate, a Mexican-American war hero, a presidential cabinet secretary, son-in-law to a U.S. President, a U.S. senator, a Congressman, and as president of a bogus nation he was accused of treason and imprisoned. Jefferson Davis was all of these and more.

life of a military wife on frontier army posts. Davis's own experience led him to appreciate Taylor's objection, so he arranged for the letter to be sent to the War Department. Against his former commander's wishes, he married Sarah in Louisville, Kentucky.

In August 1835, Jefferson and Sarah traveled south. Their goal was to spend the hot summer months in the countryside away from the river floodplain, for their health, but both of them contracted either malaria or yellow fever. Sarah died at the age of 21, on Sept. 15, 1835, after just three months of marriage.

Davis was also severely ill, and his family feared for his life. In the month following Sarah's death, he slowly improved, although he remained weak.

In 1844, Davis was sent to the Democrat convention for a third time, and his interest in politics deepened. He was selected as one of six presidential electors for the 1844 presidential election and campaigned effectively throughout Mississippi for the Democrat candidate, James K. Polk.

Davis had met Varina Banks Howell, then 18 years old. She was a granddaughter of New Jersey Governor Richard Howell. Within a month of their meeting, the 35-year-old widower asked Varina to marry him. They were married on Feb. 26, 1845.

During this time, Davis was persuaded to become a candidate for the United States House of Representatives and won the election.

In 1846 the Mexican–American War began. Davis raised a volunteer regiment, the 155th Infantry Regiment, becoming its colonel under the command of his former father-in-law, General Zachary Taylor. On July 21 the regiment sailed from New Orleans for Texas.

Born in Fairview, Kentucky on June 3, 1808, Davis was an American politician who served as the only president of the rebel Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. He was a member of the Democratic Party who represented Mississippi in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives prior to switching allegiance to the Confederacy. He also was the United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857, serving under President Franklin Pierce.

After graduating from West Point, Davis served six years as a lieutenant in the United States Army. He fought in the Mexican–American War (1846– 1848), as the colonel of a volunteer regiment. Before the American Civil War, he operated a large cotton plantation in Mississippi and owned as many as 113 slaves. Although he argued in the Senate against secession, he believed states had an unquestionable right to leave the Union.

In 1829, after West Point, Davis was stationed at Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, Michigan Territory (now Wisconsin). Zachary Taylor, a future President, had assumed command shortly before Davis arrived.

As an ironic side note, during the Black Hawk War, Capt. Abraham Lincoln led an Illinois company for a short time at Fort Crawford.

Davis fell in love with Sarah Taylor, daughter of Taylor. Both Sarah and Davis sought Taylor's permission to marry. Taylor refused, as he did not wish his daughter to have the difficult

In September 1846, Davis participated in the Battle of Monterrey, during which he led a successful charge on the La Teneria fort. On Oct. 28, Davis resigned his seat in the House of Representatives.

On Feb. 22, 1847, Davis fought bravely at the Battle of Buena Vista and was shot in the foot. In recognition of Davis's bravery and initiative, Zachary Taylor is reputed to have said, "My daughter, sir, was a better judge of men than I was."

Honoring Davis's war service, Governor Brown of Mississippi appointed him to the vacant position of U.S. Senator Jesse Speight, a Democrat, who had died on May 1, 1847.

In 1848, Senator Davis proposed and introduced an amendment to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that would have annexed most of northeastern Mexico, but it failed on a vote of 44 to 11.

Southerners wanted to increase territory held in Mexico as an area for the expansion of slavery.

The Pierce administration ended in 1857 after Pierce's loss of the Democratic nomination to James Buchanan. So, Davis ran for the Senate, was elected, and re-entered the Senate on March 4, 1857.

As tensions between the North and South began to grow over slavery, Senator Davis became a vocal advocate of states’ rights.

Have you ever wondered how great deeds are accomplished? Or for that matter, any deed at all? They begin with a thought. A friend of mine, long ago, shared with me the concept that thoughts are things. I am convinced he was right. The Bible confirms it with the expression, “As a person thinks, so is he.” It is these concepts which have shaped our world. All things begin with a thought, whether ill or good, which, if kept in focus, will produce the result. If we want to change our lives, and indeed the world, it all begins with a thought, then the idea, and finally the deed.

I like to think of this process as gardening, a hobby of mine. As I survey the area for my garden, I think of what I want to grow for the season.

The seed is the thought. Within the seed is energy, life, and tremendous potential. Once it is planted and nurtured, it will produce. What is it you want, need, or believe is necessary for a happy and fulfilled life? Plant that seed in your mind, nurture it, and watch it grow. The greatest expression of this experience for good is found in the words of Paul, a Biblical writer, in Philippians Chapter 4, “Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good reputation, dwell or think on these things, ,and practice these things, and God’s peace will be with you.”

The only reason my garden grows, is because I plant the seed.

Summer is here, which means the city’s annual summer concert series is back.

To kick things off, don’t miss the San Marcos Summer Mini Music Fest on Saturday, June 30 from 2 to 8 pm at the Wood House Gardens, 1148 Rock Springs Road.

Parking Problem at Church

A few years ago, I caught a story on the radio about a Baptist church that had a problem. It was with the Methodists down the street. Some Baptists were unable to find a space in their own parking lot because members of the nearby Methodist church, which met earlier than the Baptists, got there first. So the Baptist church had a problem.

Now, they COULD have towed the Methodist's cars away. Or, they COULD have patrolled their lot Sunday mornings. Or, they COULD have written a letter to the offending church members imploring them to park elsewhere. But they didn't.

Instead, they did something else.

One Sunday morning they stuck a bumper sticker to every car in the lot -- Baptist and Methodist alike. They all got one. The sticker read: "I'M PROUD TO BE A BAPTIST!" No more problem.

The latest notable Russian Internet mis-adventure has received widespread recent publicity. Known by various names but most commonly as “The Russian Router Hack, (RRH)” it has roused the FBI to ask all Americans to take action. The FBI has asked American computer users with routers (nearly all of us) to step up and help save themselves and the world from Russian spies.

It may sound like the plot for a “D” grade movie but it is not. It is potentially serious business. If RRH is allowed to spread it could enable the Russian “bot herders” to access to PCs across the globe creating a powerful “robot” network with millions of PCs and LANs. To date the FBI estimates that up to 500,000 routers worldwide have been hacked. That may sound like a big number when you consider that there are probably 100 million active routers just in the USA. The problem is that while this particular hack is small and was identified fairly early, it has exposed the serious worldwide vulnerability that routers represent.

While the immediate threat has been eliminated, the vulnerability still exists. This vulnerability provides potential criminal access to all hard wired or WiFi connected devices including your PC, and all “smart home” security and convenience devices. Abetting this vulnerability are weak router passwords and cheap or older, less secure routers.

The three step approach recommended by the FBI is as follows: 1.

Reboot your router by unplugging the power from the 110 volt AC circuit for thirty seconds.

2.

Plug router back in, go to router manufacturers website, download latest hardware/software updates.

3.

Change router password to a secure password (letters, num-

bers, and symbols) then write it down in keep it where you can find it again.

Remember your router WiFi password only needs to be installed one time on each device (Phone, PC, and tablet) but you do need to know it if you get a new device or when you want to allow a guest to use your WiFi. Many users will be able to successfully execute these steps without help but many won’t. Since it must be done on site, call us if you need help. CITY OF SAN MARCOS AMENDMENT TO THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS

TRANSNET LOCAL STREET IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM OF PROJECTS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on June 12, 2018 a public hearing will be held with respect to the City of San Marcos adopting projects in the 2018 Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), as the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Regional Transportation Planning Agency, is required by state and federal laws to develop and adopt a Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). The RTIP is a multi-billion dollar, multi-year program of proposed projects for major transportation projects in the San Diego Region.

Transportation projects funded with federal, state, TransNet, and the San Diego transportation sales tax program must be included in an approved RTIP. The RTIP covers five fiscal years and incrementally implements San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, the longrange transportation plan for the San Diego region. The 2018 RTIP covers fiscal years 2019 through 2023.

The City of San Marcos recommends programming the 2018 RTIP projects as they are either regionally significant, capacity increasing projects or are projects that are being recommended for TransNet revenues.

All projects programmed with TransNet funds meet all the requirements of the TransNet Extension Ordinance and accommodate travel for pedestrians and bicyclists. A complete list of the amendment is available for public review at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 1 Civic Center Drive, San Marcos, CA.
