U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter, a Marine Corps veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, called on authorities in Mexico today to expedite Andrew Tahmooressi’s proceedings and release. Tahmooressi, a Marine Sergeant who served combat tours in Afghanistan, is being held on weapons charges in a prison near Tijuana after mistakenly driving into Mexico with three legally-owned firearms.

“Mexico has its own laws and processes, and we have a responsibility as neighbors to acknowledge and respect each other’s systems,” said Rep. Hunter. “But Andrew’s actions were not deliberate: it was not his intention to enter Mexico. He simply got lost at the border on his way to meet a friend. Andrew is not a weapons trafficker and he’s not a criminal. He is a U.S. Marine who had in his possession three legallyowned firearms. If Mexico argues that makes Andrew a criminal, worthy of imprisonment, then a reality check is in order. The facts have been presented and now it’s on Mexico to do the right thing. Mexican authorities have set a hearing for the end of the

Back on February 24th at 9:55 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was dispatched to a serious injury accident on Rancho Santa Fe Road and Calle Barcelona.

Upon arrival, officers surveyed the traffic collision and contacted witnesses who observed a Buick sedan driving southbound on Rancho Santa Fe Road, north of Calle Barcelona. The Buick sedan was travelling at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Buick ran a red light in the intersection and collided into a red Ford Mustang.

The driver of the Buick was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with serious injuries. The 20-year-old male occupant

Letters to the Editor

‘Separation between church and state’ is CLEARLY NOT codified in ANY law, it is merely a legal ‘idea,’ strained from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Association where he writes, “I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof’, thus building a wall of separation between Church and State.” Many of the arguments at that time were against the country declaring a national religion; it was never their intent to scrub religious expression from public life as it is now. The conflict comes from the fact that these are two absolutes with no possible middle ground. To believe in one means you cannot believe in the other. IF, as atheists

Their board of directors made a brilliant choice in naming Jerry Van Leeuwen as their new, permanent CEO. Jerry had recently retired, after 26 years, from the city of Escondido where he had held several top admin type jobs, most recently as Community Services Director. Together, Jerry and Megan have put together a fascinating schedule of at least 22 presentations this coming year just for the concert halls. In addition to rentals to outside promoters, the Arts Center will once again be booking acts on its own, with the guidance of a promoter that has a national reputation for booking the right acts at the right time at the right price.

Look for some major shows to come to Escondido that will present a broadly diverse selection, designed to please all phases of the San Diego County market.

I’ve known Jerry for years and watched him as he handled every tough assignment that come his way and always came out on top, mission accomplished. I anticipate no difference here. Look for Jerry Van Leeuwen and his brilliant staff to light up the skies in Escondido’s arts community. ••••• All kinds of smiling faces in The Paper today. The newest smiling
