San Diego County’s recent near-fatal shark attack has already drawn statewide as well as national attention, then went viral. The story splashed over major TV networks such as ABC and CBS news, drawing San Diego County into global focus. By my scorecard any shark attack, no matter how rare, should, be given responsible attention.
On Saturday, April 30, 2017, a woman swimmer was attacked by a shark near the Camp Pendleton Beach Resort, off an area of San Onofre Beach which locals call “Church.” The 35-year-old, single mother of three young children, suffered bite marks to her right buttock and upper right thigh about 6:30 that evening and was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. The incident quickly spread through the wire services. Fox 5 news reported “North County Woman ‘fighting for her life’ After Shark Attack.” The victim, identified as Leeanne Ericson from Vista, was placed in a medicallyinduced coma at the time. She is expected to have a long and arduous road of recovery before her. She was one of the lucky ones. She lived.
Had it not been for bystander, Thomas Williams, this story might have had a different ending. It was Williams’ quick action and medical training which helped Leeanne Ericson survive her horrific ordeal until she could be airlifted by helicopter to La Jolla’s Scripps Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment. If there ever was an angel that day for victim Ericson, it was most certainly Thomas Williams, a Navy veteran who had completed an EMT course, just eight months prior, in his plans to become an Emergency Medical Technician. Without a tourniquet to stop the profuse bleeding, Williams was left to improvise by using a surfboard leash. Shortly after the attack, a large red sign with a shark image was posted stating: SHARK WARNING. KEEP OUT. WATER ACTIVITY PROHIBITED.
Ericson is currently out of her coma and described by her attending physician, Dr. Gail Tominaga, as doing very well, considering her near-death experience. Ericson’s condition may necessitate multiple surgeries and protracted therapy and, as such, her mother, Christine McKnerney, has set up a donation opportunity for anyone who wishes to help offset these medical costs at the following website: http://www.gofundme.com/leeannesmedical fund. San Onofre State Beach remains one of California’s most popular beaches for surfers, swimmers, sunbathers, kayakers, campers, etc., and its annual 2.5million visitors gives it the title as one of the top five most popular state parks in California. Apparently, it is also becoming increasingly popular with sharks.
Shark attacks in San Diego County are nothing new. Some have proved fatal. As far back as June of 1959 a great white shark attacked Robert Pamperin, age 33, off La Jolla Cove, who was snorkeling (skin diving) for abalone with his friend, Gerald Lehrer. The last time Pamperin was seen by Lehrer, who was also in the water at the time, was when Pamperin was spotted upright, in a vertical position sticking part way out of the water, in the air, as if standing on water – then he was suddenly jerked downward, under the surface. Frantically, when his friend, Lehrer, quickly dived down to check on Pamperin, he saw him in the jaws of

a very large shark that was estimated to be 20 to 23 feet long. Despite Lehrer’s brave efforts to frighten the shark off – it was too late. After a lengthy search which followed, the body of the swimmer, Robert Pamperin, was never found – only one of his two swim fins was left.
On April 23, 2008, retired veterinarian, Dave Martin, age 66, would meet his death by a great white shark, this time at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. Martin was “rammed from below” and jerked violently underwater. He would be pulled to shore by friends, but, it also was too late. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The victim succumbed quickly to massive blood loss. A subsequent autopsy determined from teeth marks that the great white shark was estimated by experts to be in the vicinity of 13 to 16 feet in length with a possible proportional weight of 1,500 to 2,400 pounds. Committee which keeps such records, San Diego County shark attacks are still rare. However, the potentiallydeadly area of such attacks revealed a pattern. The Shark Research Committee records show that nearly 50% or almost one-half of the dozen shark attacks in San Diego County since 2004, have taken place at San Onofre Beach, the same area where Leeanne Ericson was attacked just last month. According to shark authority, Ralph S. Collier, whom I recently spoke to, he now counts five such shark attacks at San Onofre since 2004. WHAT PRECAUTIONS CAN BE TAKEN TO PREVENT A SHARK ATTACK?
With summer just around the corner and large crowds expected at various San Diego County beaches, experts are quick to point-out precautionary measures to help prevent any possible shark attacks. Short of just staying out of the water, which most bathers will refuse to do, here is a short list of practical

tips that may, at the very most, prove life-saving. A. Always swim in a group. B. Never wander or swim too far away from the shoreline. C. Avoid the water during dusk or nighttime. D. Never enter the water if bleeding from any cut, sore, or body cavity. E. Do not wear shiny jewelry. F. Avoid striped or brightly colored clothing.
Keep in mind, most shark attacks happen within 100-feet from the shoreline, especially in the United States, Australia, and South Africa. WHERE DO THE MOST SHARK ATTACKS OCCUR IN THE U. S.?
Within the United States, San Diego County doesn’t even crack the top 12 list of regions with the most shark attacks. Below is a short list of 12 U. S. cities and counties with the highest frequency shark attacks, recorded from 1882 through 2016. 1. Volusia, Florida – 275 shark attacks. 2. Brevard, Florida – 130. 3. Palm Beach, Florida – 69. 4. Maui, Hawaii – 56. 5. Oahu, Hawaii – 38. 6. St. Johns, Florida – 27. 7. Martin, Florida – 35. 8. Duval, Florida – 32. 9. Charleston, South Carolina – 32. 10. St. Lucie, Florida – 31. 11. Randy Honebrink, of the Hawaii State Shark Task Force says, “It’s not unusual for even tiger sharks -- big tiger sharks -- to come up in such shallow water that they can barely move.”
When this specific question is posed, the shark-attack picture for San Diego County is not as flattering. Along the California coastline, San Diego County has had the most shark attacks recorded in the state, with Humboldt County a close second. Though shark attacks are considered very rare, this statistic does little to calm the nerves of San Diego County bathers. The fact remains that San Diego County has the most shark attacks with episodes predating 1933 records.
On October 11, 1958, young teen, John Allman, age 15, was bitten by a shark while swimming in shallow water off Coronado Beach.
WHERE DO MOST SHARK ATTACKS OCCUR IN CALIFORNIA?
From Imperial Beach (at least 3 shark attacks since 1950 and as recent as 2007), to Coronado, Carlsbad, Mission Beach, San Onofre State Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Solana Beach, and La Jolla, are just a sampling of shark attacks that have been recorded by the Shark Attack Database Records. CAN SHARKS ATTACK IN SHALLOW WATERS?
Short answer, yes. It already has happened, for example, right here in San Diego County. On September 17, 1984 a person who was wading in shallow waters was bitten by a shark – not in the ocean – but in San Diego’s Mission Bay. It was a non-fatal encounter, but, a shark attack, nonetheless. Research has found a most unsettling truth: most swimmers, worldwide, are attacked by sharks in shallow waters. Regarding these findings, shark experts are still baffled. They know that sharks come into very shallow waters, but, they are mystified as to what provokes them to attack a person. “You can’t really explain why sharks bite people,” say Honebrink. While it is a ‘given’ that sharks are predators, experts are stumped as to why these sharks don’t go after easier prey, such as fish? One theory is that in shallow waters, sharks are going after other prey and humans just happen to get in the way. DO SHARKS ENJOY THE TASTE OF HUMAN BEINGS?

The affable, red-bearded scientist, now in his mid-50s whose title is marine ecologist at Australia’s prestigious Southern Cross University, departs company from the ranks of most shark experts with his unique man-eating shark views: “Normally, they (sharks) eat fish, but they don’t mind red meat if they can get it (like humans). Seals are very red meat (like people) from oxygen proteins in the blood.”
So where does the idea come from that sharks, great white sharks in particular, do not like the taste of human beings? According to Bucher, people don’t like the idea that sharks may like the taste of human flesh. As such, Bucher believes that myths and misleading information are circulated among the ‘lay public’ without any scientific foundation to support these views. According to Dr. Bucher, there is no sound evidence that says sharks do not like the taste of human flesh. For Dr. Bucher, such claims quickly gained public acceptance because it seems to calm the nerves and psyche of people who may find the concept of man-eating sharks too disturbing.
What about the statistical fact that sharks, generally, bite people then quickly release them as if it were an accident or a distasteful experience? Dr. Bucher sees things differently: “Because most shark attacks on

humans involved a single bite, people think sharks did not enjoy the taste, or the attack was a case of mistaken identity. Sharks like our flesh, but they just don’t like our bones.”
On a different note, Dr. Bucher points out that human beings have a greater chance of dying from a car crash on the way to the beach than from any shark attack. Australia’s veteran shark hunter, Vic Hislop, agrees with Bucher’s view. Hislop states, “At least a hundred swimmers disappear every year here (Australia) and their bodies are never found. Many have been eaten. I’ve often caught sharks and removed human hands and feet from their stomachs. I even found a human foot still in its sandal.” Non-scientist, Hislop, further explains that the great white sharks can develop a taste for humans and that, once one does, it will travel from beach to beach devouring humans whenever it feels hungry.
Within the scientific community, Hislop’s claims are challenged and considered without verifiable foundation.
I called David Bader, noted marine expert at the famed Aquarium of the Pacific at Long Beach, California, where he is Director of Education and posed the same query if sharks enjoy the taste of people. David Bader believes otherwise.

According to Bader, humans are definitely not on the great white sharks’ food chain. “A great white shark is never, intentionally, going after a person as prey.” This is, also, the general consensus of shark authorities, worldwide.
Some shark researchers believe that sharks, generally, attack human beings when they become confused or their curiosity is peaked from people splashing in the water or if feet are dangling from a surfboard, while the surfer sits on top. Also, some experts surmise that surfers in shiny black, skin-tight wetsuits often resemble seals and sea lions, which are delectable items on, say, a great white shark’s menu.
Such shark-attack scenarios on human beings may be a result of what is known as “mistaken identify” (e.g. confusing a swimmer for a seal), a concept idea supported in part by some but not all shark authorities.
WHAT SHARKS ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS?
Well over 400 species of sharks have been identified, thus far. Out of that vast number, only a handful – perhaps, a dozen – are considered potentially dangerous. The three species of shark that are responsible for the most attacks on human beings are: 1. Great White Shark. 2. Tiger Shark.

Generally speaking, female great white sharks are larger than the males, sometimes attaining a length of greater than 20-feet. This species of shark (Carcharodon carcharias) a.k.a white pointer is, by far, responsible for the most global attacks on human beings with 272 documented unprovoked bite incidents as of 2012.
Nonetheless, most experts believe that these shark attacks are not indications that these sharks are seeking human prey. Rather, they believe the great white sharks prefer to hunt for seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, whales, sea turtles, and even birds. Great white sharks also eat carrion (dead animals that have been found floating in the water). They have also been known to eat objects that they are unable to digest (they do not chew their food).
According to a 2014 study, great white sharks have been known to accelerate to over 56 km/h (35 mph) for short bursts. These sharks seem to prefer prey with a high content of energy-rich fat. Shark expert, Peter Klimley, employed a rod-and-reel gimmick to troll (drag through the water) carcasses of a seal, a pig, and a sheep from his boat at the South Farallon islands, off the coast of San Francisco. The sharks attacked all three baits but rejected the sheep carcass.
Great white sharks can detect the electromagnetic field which is emitted by the movement of other marine life. Remarkably, great white sharks are so sensitive that they can detect variations of half a billionth of a volt. Which means even fish that tries to remain hidden by keeping perfectly still in a crevice or under a rock can still be

Worldwide, sharks kill just under 20 people a year. Each year there are 50 to 70 confirmed shark attacks and from 5 to 15 shark-attack fatalities around the globe. The United States averages just under 16 non-fatal shark attacks annually. Sadly, on the other side of the coin, sharks suffer greatly at the hands of human beings. Shockingly, between 20 to 100 million sharks die each year due to fishing activity of some sort, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File. In past decades, shark populations plunged from 30 to 50 percent. With marine laws now set into place, these diminishing numbers are now starting to change. ARE SHARK ATTACKS ON THE INCREASE?
The answer is a ‘tricky’ yes. Tricky, because these statistics have to come with an explanation. The number of shark attacks have risen over the past several years – not because sharks have become more aggressive, but – because there are greater numbers of people who enjoy going into the ocean waters. The steadily increasing numbers of bathers, swimmers, surfers, kayakers, scuba and skin-divers, today, along with a rebounding great white shark population, all make for more potentially-dangerous encounters. The equation seems to lay in numbers: more people in the ocean, higher shark

On May 19th at 9:49 p.m., two Police Officers for the City of Carlsbad Police Department attempted to stop a white Range Rover on Calle Barcelona and Paseo Avellano for a vehicle code violation. The vehicle failed to stop for the officers after they activated their emergency lights and siren. The vehicle led officers on a pursuit and came to a stop on the off ramp of Northbound Interstate 5 at La Costa Avenue. Officers were able to deploy a tire deflation device under the tires of the vehicle. The vehicle began to move again where it subsequently ran over the device causing all its tires to deflate. The female driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was taken into custody.
The driver was identified as Emilie Manley from Carlsbad, a 61 year old white female. She was cited and released for a misdemeanor violation of failure to yield to an emergency police vehicle and she was released to the care of a local medical facility. Bus Driver at Escondido Transit Center Hit by Stray Bullet
Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Escondido Transit Center in Escondido last Thursday. Shortly thereafter, the suspected gunman was in handcuffs. The driver’s wound was not life-threatening, police said.
The violence began when a pair of young men got into an altercation with a third man near the parked bus. One of the young men pulled out a shotgun and fired at the third man about 6:30 p.m., police said.
A round missed the intended target, pierced through the windshield of the bus and fragmented. A piece struck the driver, who was sitting inside during a lunch break, police Lt. Justin Murphy said. There were no passengers on the bus. The victim was taken to a hospital with a minor wound to his lower neck.
Shortly after the shooting, the suspected gunman and his companion were arrested, Murphy said. Police recovered a gun they believe was used in the shooting. The third suspect was not found.
Bus and Sprinter train service at the station on West Valley Parkway at North Quince Street was not disrupted, a North County Transit District spokeswoman said. Residents Raise Uproar over Homeless Camp in Oceanside
Residents who live near Oceanside’s Country Club Lane are not happy and they made their displeasure known to the Oceanside City Council, demanding that a large homeless camp in the area be removed. Hidden amont trees and bushes in a canyon east of I-5, between the senior center and the Goat Hill city golf course - is a homeless camp that is only one of several that have cropped up over recent years.
Residentx complain addicts and drunks are frequenters of the area and are impacting the senior center located nearby. A similar problem occurred in Escondido, very near Escondido’s

Recently, I mentioned to Nami that I had a huge amount of prescription drugs that I no longer had a need for and that I’d probably package them up and take them to the fire department or sheriff’s department and turn them in for disposal. “No need,” he said, flashing his world famous smile, “take these bags, put the pills in them, follow the instructions, then just throw them in the garbage.”
What he gave me was an attracive purple bag labeled “Medication Disposal System. - Safe - Effective Convenient.” The bag works for pills, liquids and patches.

Homelessness is a problem throughout San Diego County, and many cities struggle to deal with it. This year’s pointin-time count, taken in January, showed Oceanside leads North County with 531 homeless individuals, followed closely by Vista with 529 and Escondido with 523. Employees and volunteers at the Oceanside Senior Center said Thursday morning that transients frequent the center and its parking lot, but rarely cause trouble. Usually they just want the free coffee, refuse offers of long-term assistance, and move on when asked to leave.
It is said that at leas 100 transients live in the area.
Some transients have lived in the area for as long as three years. Many live on welfre checks and food from “Brother Benno’s.“ Residents complain of drugs being bought and sold in the area and the problem appears to be growing rather than being addressed.
Councilmemembers Lowry and Sanchez agreed there was a problem but it was difficult to know just how to address it. “We function within a very specific legal framework,” Lowery said. The matter was not on the agenda but Lowry and Sanchez chose to address it anyway. The matter was referred to staff for further study and recommendations.

Adding to the clothes line. How about all those "White flags" the diapers we rinsed out in the toilet by hand and hung on the line? The dry clothes we brought in, we sprinkled with water from a pop bottle with a sprinkler head, rolled them up, and put them in a bushel basket for a day, then ironed them!! Washing was quite a chore if your wringer washer & rinse tubs were in the basement! Most of the Ladies I knew did not have outside jobs, our job was to take good care of husbands & kids and our home!

I find myself watching KCST (Channel 7/39) and KGTV (Channel 10) as well as KUSI-TV (Channel 9). All have stronger personnel, some weaknesses, but all, to my mind, are stronger than TV8.
This town/county has a well earned reputation for fielding losers . . . in football, and in baseball.
As for football, I’ll be watching the San Diego Aztecs team . . no more San Diego Chargers. Not even sure I’ll watch them play in their new playpen.
Really disappointed in San Diego sports teams. ••••• Speaking of disappointments, I find that the KFMB-TV weekend newscasts leave a lot to be desired. Anchors Marcella Lee and Steve Price are good reporters but are not the right fit for the anchor desk. John Howard is very weak as a sports anchor . . . while Miles Kraska does a good job. I’d love to see Ted Leitner return to the sports desk at TV8. He was good - controversial sometimes . . . but he was good. Shawn Styles is, for my money, the best tv weatherman in San Diego - Matt
The writing of local news, particuarly on KFMB-TV is very, very weak. Sappy, syrupy stories that should not be part of a newscast . . . way too much dependence on news from other cities, states, communities . . . we need to see more hard news . . . and better written, from TV8. Weekday news anchors are adequate, but not great. I suspect the problem at TV8 lies with the News Director, Dean Elwood. He’s responsible for hiring the talent, for supervising the writing and production of on-air news.
We’ll probably have more comment on other stations and their program personnel in future columns. That’s enough for now. ••••• Congratulations to the City of Escondido City Council for turning down the proposed hotel complex that would have grabbed a big hunk of the Escondido Community Arts Center (for a long term lease of $1 per year!) as part of its footprint. Mayor Sam and his fellow councilmenmbers showed good judgment in telling this hotel developer to go back to the drawing boards. We would all like to see a top notch hotel in Escondido, but not at the expense of giving up property owned and paid for by the taxpayers of Escondido. Good going, councilmembers!

According to George Burgess, Director of Florida Program for Shark Research at the University of Florida, shark population is on the rebound. After a sharp decline of up to 90% in shark population in the U. S., they are now rising towards the numbers of a century ago. Since the passage of certain laws to protect, for example, the great white sharks – their numbers will obviously continue to increase. In National Geographic, Burgess stated, “For once we’re getting some good news; white shark numbers are going up and great whites are probably in a better situation than we’ve seen them in our lifetimes.”
Many shark experts agree that media hype over shark attacks are out-ofsynch with reality. While the U. S. averages less than one shark fatality every two years, 41 human beings are killed every year by lightning strikes in the U. S. coastal states, alone. This is not to minimize the trauma shark attack victims and their families suffer; rather it keeps in perspective where the real dangers lay. To cite further examples, California injuries or deaths caused by drowning, happen at least 200 times more than shark attacks. However one puts a spin on statistics, public fears regarding shark attacks rarely decrease. The question, “Are shark attacks on the increase?” is a more complicated one than it might seem. For instance, in California the answers would be
both “yes” and “no.” Yes, they are on the increase in certain areas, such as San Diego and Humboldt counties, to give just two regional examples. But the answer is “no” at other California beaches. As marine biologists explain: “Shark attacks in California are not evenly spread out along the coastline. Unlike San Diego and Humboldt County, the counties of Mendocino and Ventura, for example, have experienced less than 3 shark attacks in over 70 years!” ARE SHARKS ALWAYS AROUND SWIMMERS IN CALIFORNIA?
This question-and-answer should be clipped out, laminated, and carried around in your purse or wallet to show to possible non-believers. Heads up: Most people may not believe the answer.
The loaded question: “Are sharks always around swimmers in California?” could easily be asked in this more direct manner: “Would you swim in the ocean if you (knew) that unseen sharks were under and around you?” That’s basically the same question, but, turned inside-out and posed in a more compelling and direct manner.
The answer should be surgically precise, for it is a tricky one. Here’s a ‘qualifier’ answer: “Yes,” in certain areas of California’s coastline, such as at San Diego County’s San Onofre State Beach – more often than not -there will be sharks around you if you’re swimming, skin-diving, surfing, or kayaking in the ocean.
Let’s have the world’s foremost authorities on this subject answer this question in their own inimitable way.
I recently spoke to world renowned marine scientist, Ralph Collier, President of the Shark Research Committee and Director of Global Shark Attack File and he was quoted as stating: “Sharks glide unseen among surfers and paddle boarders on a nearly daily basis. I ventured to San Onofre (in San Diego County) in 2004 and spent a number of days looking down from the cliffs. I watched great white sharks swimming among, between, and below surfers, and they (the surfers) never even knew they were there! It’s not like every time they are around a human being they’re going to bite them.” Yes, there are shark attacks, but, Collier told The Paper he does not believe that these attacks on humans are predatory in nature. “Great white shark predator-attacks are very highenergy, high-velocity episodes. If great white shark-attacks on humans were predatory in nature, you wouldn’t have all these survivors to tell the tale,” Collier emphasized.
That seems to be the reason why sharks, in general, will bite then release a person.
Regarding the concept of “mistaken identity” (where sharks mistake a surfer, for example, for a seal or sea lion) this concept holds true for some attacks but, clearly, not all of them, according to Collier. There are complex components at play here, much of which are continually being researched. According to ReefQuest Center for Shark Research, “Clearly, white sharks are capable of killing and consuming humans. But, if white sharks regard humans as ‘fair game,’ why are so few people attacked by them each year?”
Predatory attacks by great white sharks will almost always result in death for its intended prey, followed by whole or partial consumption, as when it hunts for sea life on its food chain. Some shark experts surmise that such attacks on people may (possibly) be motivated when great white sharks perceive something as a threat or, perhaps, a breach of its territory. However, this theory is not subscribed to by all researchers. For many marine researchers, great white sharks are often, unfairly, given the ‘villain role’ by sensationalized movies such as “Jaws” (and its subsequent sequels). It should be noted here, that Ralph S. Collier’s Global Shark Attack File (GSAF) provides media with accurate data to counteract such negative hype about shark attacks. Nonetheless, the subject of sharks and shark sightings have dominated news in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, on May 6, 2017, CBS News reported: “Shark attacks on the rise along the California coast.”
And just days (from the date that this story was filed to The Paper), at least 30 sightings of sharks have been confirmed from San Diego to Long Beach, California, with officials in Long Beach issuing warnings that as many as 20 young sharks hunt off the area beaches, sometimes within 50-feet from the shoreline where bathers gather. sharks as sightings increase in Southern California.” The special report further noted that increased shark-sightings have placed some lifeguards on high alert. In more recent days, a Long Beach surf organization which monitors shark activity spotted nearly three dozen sharks from Long Beach down to San Diego County’s San Onofre beach area. As a consequence, “Shark Advisory” signs were posted in Long Beach warning residents to enter the water at their own risk.
On one particular day, Orange County Sheriff’s Department warned paddleboarders over the loudspeaker, blaring out the words: “ATTENTION IN THE WATER, THIS IS THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT! YOU ARE PADDLE-BOARDING NEXT TO APPROXIMATELY 15 GREAT WHITE SHARKS!” Next came an announcement from Deputy Brian Stockbridge, again over the loudspeaker to all swimmers: EXIT THE WATER IN A CALM MANNER.”
Most of the sharks that day were young great whites, approximately 6 to 8 feet in length and about a year old. According to marine biologist, Chris Lowe, from the shark research lab at California State University, Long Beach: “Shark populations are increasing. The annual ceremony at the California Peace Officer’s Memorial honoring officers killed in the line of duty was held in Capitol Park in Sacramento last week. Over 3,000 men and women in uniform traveled to Sacramento to attend, including Governor Jerry Brown, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and other state officials. The Christmas photos reminded me in 1968 I was selected Escondido Village Mother of the Year. I was MRS SANTA CLAUS. I rode in a sleigh pulled by 4 beautiful white dogs on the Christmas Parade. A picture of a quilting group showed Mary Watkins. We knew her and her husband years ago but haven't kept in touch. I forgot to tell you Ralph & Leah will have been married for 70 yrs on June 5th 2017. They live in the San Diego area now with one of there daughters. You bring back many good memories!
Now if you will do a story about the 4 H and FFA clubs when the SD CO Fair comes around you will be my HERO! These kid work there buns off keeping records, training, feed-
ing, cleaning up after their animals. The other papers have BIG stories about the rides and the food but don't bother about these hard working kids. The T V stations are the same!

The Cold War Era:
The two Atom Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ended World War II. They were the most terrible weapons ever devised (at that point in history) by mankind. Atomic powered weapons have the potential of destroying the world. Anyway, that fact began circulating around the world in the late 1940s. Until 1948-49, it was believed the United States was the only nation in the world that possessed the A-Bomb. We found out too late that spies among the research and development team at Las Alamos, N.M., that developed the bombs were feeding the information to the Soviet Union (Russia).
While the Soviets helped us win World War II, and supposedly were our “allies,” it became quickly apparent they had their sights on conquering the world. As the Soviets gobbled up all of Central Europe (Poland, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, East Germany and the Baltic states, the U.S. realized we were in a “Cold War” with Communism and Soviet aggression.
Loosely interpreted, “Cold War” is more a war of words and diplomatic maneuvering. There were several “close calls” for a ‘hot war” to break out between the Soviets and the socalled “Western powers,” (U.S., Canada, Great Britain, France, West Germany, Australia, and New Zealand), but luckily nothing ever developed other than blustering words, etc. The closest call to nuclear war was in October 1962. For 13 days the U.S. almost went to war with the Soviets when they began putting atomic warhead missiles in Cuba, which had become a communist state. President John F. Kennedy forced the Soviets to “back down” and dismantle everything.
While in the U.S. Navy between 195962, I had a very small role in the Cold War. I was an airborne assistant combat information officer flying patrols in the Pacific between Midway Island and Adak, Alaska. My crew’s job was to watch our radar scopes for any unidentified aircraft or possibly a missile sailing in the stratosphere toward Canada and the U.S. During two years of 11 to 13 hour flights, about the only thing popping up on our screens was an occasional errant airliner that had gotten off course or a flock of goony birds (Albatross) flying home to Midway Island. But, be assured, no Soviet aircraft or missiles got by French Frigate Shoals while we were on duty. By the 1970s, both sides had become interested in making accommodations in order to create a more stable and predictable international system, inaugurating a period of détente that saw Strategic Arms Limitation Talks and the US opening relations with the
People's Republic of China as a strategic counterweight to the Soviet Union. Détente collapsed at the end of the decade with the beginning of the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979. The early 1980s were another period of elevated tension, with the Soviet downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (1983), and the "Able Archer" NATO military exercises (1983). The United States increased diplomatic, military, and economic pressures on the Soviet Union, at a time when the communist state was already suffering from economic stagnation. In the mid-1980s, the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the liberalizing reforms of perestroika ("reorganization"-- 1987) and glasnost ("openness" -- 1985) and ended Soviet involvement in Afghanistan. Pressures for national independence grew stronger in Eastern Europe, especially Poland. Gorbachev meanwhile refused to use Soviet troops to bolster the faltering Warsaw Pact regimes as had occurred in the past. The result in 1989 was a wave of revolutions that peacefully (with the exception of the Romanian Revolution) overthrew all of the communist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union itself lost control and was banned following an abortive coup attempt in August 1991. This in turn led to the formal dissolution of the USSR in December 1991 and the collapse of communist regimes in other countries such as Mongolia, Cambodia and South Yemen. The United States remained as the world's only superpower. The Cold War effectively ended in December 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. The Berlin Wall separating the city from East and West Germany was torn down. In short, the U.S. and its Western Allies militarily “outspent” the Soviet Union, causing them to go bankrupt, and collapse of the Soviet state -- (a simple explanation). Other than China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Cuba, today communism has all but vanished from governments around the world. Even the Chinese are more capitalistic than they are communistic. The current posturing by North Korea is an example of how a “Cold War” could easily turn “hot.” They are constantly baiting the U.S., but so far, no shots have been fired.

Raider loves to cuddle, unless there’s a tennis ball around. In that case, all of his attention is on the ball. He can play for hours. After a full day Raider will want to crawl under the covers with you to help keep your feet warm. He was transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society from another shelter through the FOCAS program.

Zoning Code Update Housing Density Bonus

On my personal “Top Ten” music styles, country is in the bottom half. But, for my wife, it’s close to No. 1. So it was no surprise to hear an Alan Jackson CD playing in the car. When the next track started, my wife said, “Some of our friends might not like this song.” I listened a little closer.
“If Jesus walked the world today,” Jackson sang, “He’d probably be a hillbilly.” Now I was really listening. And thinking, “Yeah, I can think of friends who wouldn’t like that.” They probably wouldn’t like the part about him driving a Chevy or working at the plant, either. Even the religious leaders of his time got upset when he “surrounded

More recently, like yesterday, she started to describe how our new puppy, the Chug (Chihuahua/Pug mix) whom we call Cindy, went to the bathroom. The Humane Society had clued us in on this but still . . . . "She had to go pee-pee so she (breaks into laughter) practically stood on her head (more laughter) and had her head on the ground (more laughter) her front paws balancing herself, (giggling) and her hind feet up in the air . . . (uproarious laughter) and that's how she pees!" [I have shortened the telling of this tale considerably due to time and space considerations. The above took a full three minutes, maybe more, to get through]. I smiled at the story and after she caught her breath . . . we went on to other things to talk about. I was afraid that she might next describe for me how our new pup went poopie and I'm not sure Evelyn would have survived telling the tale.
The new pup is a feisty little bitch. That sounds terrible to say, doesn't it? But it is a factual statement. She is a bitch (for those who are unaware, that is the proper term for a female dog). She is a bit feisty and has tried to become the Alpha dog . . . Trixie, to her credit, will play and play with Cindy . . . but when Cindy tries to take control, Trixie lets Cindy know right away that she, Trixie, is the Alpha dog. If Cindy persists, Trixie will pin her down, show her fangs, and growl, as if to say . . . "I guess you didn't get the message the first time. I'm the Alpha dog. Got it?"

Another Mother's Day is in the books. This year I took advantage of sale prices at Stapes Office Supplies and bought Evelyn a stapler . . . just to be nice I threw in a whole box of new staples as well. She loves a clean house so I splurged a bit and bought her a whole box of vacuum cleaner bags. I always try to be both kind and considerate. I've noticed a certain coolness in Evelyn's demeanor today, however. I wonder . . . maybe she feels a bit under the weather? Or, do you suppose I overdid this romantic stuff on Mother's Day?

PC usage is declining because consumers have turned to the Internet for nearly everything they once did on PCs. They don’t need a computer, only an Internet connection. Home users with any PC with Windows7 or above already have a comfortable, fast Internet machine and won’t gain any benefit from buying a new PC. Those who do need to replace or add a new home device are looking to inexpensive Windows Cloudbooks or Google Chromebooks as an alternative to PCs.
Businesses rely on in- house networked applications among PC workstations. While Internet based applications and data storage are starting to make inroads into business computing, it will be a while yet before businesses give up their PCs. Here at The Computer Factory we are building and selling fewer new Windows PCs and more Chromebooks and Cloudbooks. The sales of refurbished notebook and desktop PCs have increased as home and business users realize that they get no tangible benefit paying twice as much for a new PC when refurbs carry the same warranty. A wise man once said, “change is inevitable, progress is not.” Microsoft’s operating systems are a magnificent example. The new “chip” credit cards are another example. In this day and age we often put up with changes that benefit the business or the Government but cause nothing but problems for us common folk. Let’s hope the changes in our industry are for the better. Whatever the changes, we must either adapt or “run away and hide.”
