I distinctively remember the first time I read Playboy Magazine.
Huddled beneath the steps leading to the basement coal bin, my flash light casting dark shadows on the wall, I devoured this forbidden fruit eagerly. Obtaining such a plum publication had not been easy. I’d bribed a cab driver into buying a copy by promising him the centerfold Playmate of the Month. I was 14, a freshman in high school. photographs or even the Playmate’s name, but I do remember the impact that magazine had on me and countless other young men over the next thirty-odd years. In those faintly musky smelling pages I acquired invaluable information on topics of intense interest to me, an orphan boy: How to select and knot the correct tie, choose and use the proper shaving gear, make shoes last longer. And yes, it always came back to ‘them’ – those alien creatures called girls – how to talk to them, treat them and yes, court them, that made Playboy the center of my reading world.
Limited Contact Between Sexes
In most families at that time, any activity involving men and women other than prayer, or as depicted in national magazines, admiring the latest shiny car, was a sin, worthy of a paddling and visit from the local priest or pastor. In my dank cubby hole, I gleaned information that privileged young men learned from their college-educated fathers and other family members.
Over the years Playboy taught me how to entertain, from choosing the right appetizers, stir the perfect martini, select the proper wines, and
cook the right steak - secret information the high-school dropouts in my family had no need to know. Playboy became my life-style manual. I was not alone. In September 1957 over 700,000 newsstand copies were sold. The Man -The Revolution
There was a man behind this publishing success. A man born to religiously Puritanical parents in Chicago, Illinois, in the heart of the Great Depression in1926. His philosophy would change how America had sex over the next half-

century. His message that any activity between consenting adults, man and woman, man and man, woman and woman, should be joyous, celebrated and repeated. Often. This open-minded approach to sex was a radical departure from the norms of the day, as we’ve seen. Some observers felt Hefner’s ideas were the recipe for greater freedom and happiness in all transactions. His detractors felt his ideas of sexual tolerance would lead to the destruction of society and doom the family unit. Both sides, it’s fair to say, agreed these new guidelines spelled the end of America’s innocence. Hugh Marston Hefner, despised by many, an icon of gracious living to others, was the publisher and editorin-chief of Playboy Magazine from its first issue in 1954, until his death at age 91, in 2017. “Nothing was printed in the magazine that Dad didn’t know of, or in many cases, suggest,” said his daughter Christy, who edited the magazine for over 25 years. Although Hefner explained his philosophy repeatedly in Playboy’s pages and bequeathed nearly 3,000 volumes of scrapbooks and essays to the University of California, Los Angeles that detailed his day-to-day activities, much about Hefner’s attitudes remains a mystery. Where did he derive his philosophy? What great thinkers influenced him?

What was his major drive other than the financial success of his publication?
When his first wife, Mildred “Millie” Williams confessed before their wedding that she had been sexually unfaithful while Hefner was away, he stated her admission was “the most devastating moment of my life.” Were his wife’s indiscretions so hurtful, so disruptive that he revised his traditional viewpoints on sex and become an advocate for open-marriage and sexual freedom? Hefner’s early history gives no hint of his passion to change America sexual conduct. His career as a publisher started when Esquire Magazine – at that time a Men’s Magazine dedicated primarily to male fashions, movie reviews and short stories - where Hefner was a promotional copy writer, refused him a $5.00 weekly raise.
When Hefner quit, it was not to start his own publication. Instead, he took a job as newsstand and promotions director for Publisher’s Development Corporation. Here he noticed many customers asked for a gentleman’s magazine that stressed lifestyle issues. In those days most men’s mags were sleazy efforts that had to be asked for at the cash register. Most such publications featured salacious nude photographs of women bordering on pornography. After some six months on his new job, Hefner became convinced that men would buy a magazine to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. Economy by spending your refund check wisely: * If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka . * If you spend it on gasoline, a lot of your money will go to the Arabs.
* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, Taiwan, Japan, or China...
* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala... * If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea . * If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to China or Taiwan .
* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to bonuses and they will hide most of the money off shore... Instead, keep the money in America by:
1) Spending it at yard sales, or 2) Going to ball games, or 3) Spending it on prostitutes, or 4) Beer or 5) Tattoos. (These are pretty much the only American businesses still operating in the U.S.) Conclusion: Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day!

In early 1953, Hefner raised $8,000 from 45 investors, including a $1,000 investment from his own mother – “Not because she believed in the venture, but because she believed in her son,” Hefner would say - to launch Playboy. At first named Stag Party, the title changed after Stag Magazine threatened a law suit for trademark infringement. Playboy’s first issue with Marilyn Monroe as cover girl and Playmate of the Month, produced in Hef’s kitchen, sold 54,175 copies, an unprecedented number for a firsttime magazine.
Hefner, who never met Marilyn Monroe, is buried in the $75,000 crypt next to hers at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles. “Spending eternity next to Marilyn is an opportunity too sweet to pass up,” Hefner told the LA Times in 2009. This statement, according to psychologists gives a real hint to a deeper motivation of Hefner: The Fear of Death. His commitment to equality among the sexes was challenged early on. In 1955, Charles Beaumont wrote a science fiction short story, “The Broken Man.” Rejected by Esquire Magazine, Hefner published it. A cranky older woman, in her senior years, was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store.She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard, to the arresting officer who took her away. This set the tone for Hefner’s reoccurring plea, any sexual act between consenting adults is just fine. As late as 2012, he wrote a passionate plea in support of gay marriage, stating that a fight for gay rights in “a fight for all our rights. Without it we will turn back the sexual revolution and return to an earlier puritanical time.” Hefner’s message that America’s repressed sexual attitudes came from our Puritanical beginnings and did not reflect the views of modern men, resonated with a male audience. In 1956, Playboy’s paid circulation surpassed 700,000 copies per month; by 1959 it rose to over a million. When Playboy Enterprises went public in 1971, the magazine was selling 7 million copies monthly, earning a profit of $12 million in 1972. By then, Playboy Enterprises, the parent company of Playboy, owned 23 Playboy clubs, resorts, hotels, and casinos, with memberships totaling nearly 900,000 worldwide. Suzanne Moore, wrote that Hefner threatened her with a lawsuit for calling him a ‘pimp.’ Moore argued that “he was man who bought and sold women to other men.” She further stated that “Part of Hefner’s business acumen was to make the selling of female flesh respectable and hip, to make soft porn acceptable.” English writer Julie Bindel stated Hefner “caused immeasurable damage by turning porn – and therefore the buying and selling of women’s bodies – into a legitimate business.” Hefner’s former girlfriend, Holly Madison, would later say that during her residence at the Playboy Mansion, Hefner “encouraged competition – and body image issues – between his multiple live-in girlfriends. His legacy is full evidence of the exploitation of women for professional gain.” Insatiable Sexual Appetite
Hefner seemed to have a deep hole in his psychic; when the cold winds of loneliness blew, he sought solace from his willing girlfriends. According to reports, he was sexually involved with 11 of the 12 Playmates of the Month at one time. He did not deny reports that he dated as many as seven women concurrently.

Most of the Hefner’s girlfriends agree on three things 1) Hefner was always exceedingly courteous and polite; he seldom expressed anger; 2) he treated each of them as the most important person in his life while they were involved with him; 3) he would grow distracted when they expressed a personal opinion or formulated a viewpoint contrary to his. Hefner showed little or no interest in traditional sports: Baseball was “a stick and ball game”; football, “big sweaty guys pushing other big sweaty guys around.” He did like to watch and talk about automobile racing – from stocks to Formula One’s. In January 2009, Hefner began a relationship with Crystal Harris, who would become his third wife, after their well-publicized break up was mended. She joined the Shannon’s as his “number one girlfriend”. (Holly Madison, had ended her seven-year relationship with him earlier that year.)

Carlsbad Charitable Foundation Awards $90K to Combat Homelessness – The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, marked its 11th year of giving at its Annual Grant Awards celebration on May 2nd at the home of members Yvonne & Carm Finocchiaro. At the event, CCF and its members awarded grants to three nonprofit organizations with programs that will help combat poverty and homelessness within the Carlsbad region. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 2017 Point-in-Time Count, homelessness has increased 5 percent in San Diego County over the past year, with more than 9,000 San Diegans living on the streets or in shelters and an estimated 160 living in Carlsbad. The 2018 CCF grants aim to be part of a regional solution by supporting programs that give Carlsbad residents the necessary tools to avoid or move out of homelessness. The 2018 grantees include: Interfaith Community Services ($15,000) will support the Carlsbad Family Self-Sufficiency Program, providing residents with access to comprehensive programs that empower local youth and families to lead independent and thriving lives, by having greater access to critical support, such as employment, nutrition assistance, housing and social services. Also, local families struggling with poverty will be provided transportation assistance through bus passes and gas vouchers for travel to school and job interviews or work sites to gain or retain employment. Solutions for Change ($60,000) grant will support the sponsorship of up to six Carlsbad families to be enrolled in the award-winning Solutions University program, where they are provided vital life skills classes, individualized case management and career preparation. This program helps create strong, independent families, capable of pursuing every opportunity they want in life, from raising a happy family, creating a successful career, buying a home, and sending kids to college. This fear of intimacy seems to have effected Hefner in other ways. Though he claimed not to worry about his eventual demise – his mother lived to be 101- many of his associates spoke of Hefner’s obsession with death. In a Hollywood Reporter article near the end of his life, a psychologist is quoted as saying, there were, “Two ways to look at Hefner’s hedonism. The first is that Buddhist principle of living for the moment. The other is an abiding fear of death. I vote for the latter. That’s why he meticulously records his daily actions, his every thought, his every attitude in his journals. A person obsessed with the legacy he’ll leave, does this.” Others reported on how alone Hefner was. Working long hours, eating alone, and being solitary are strong indicators of fear of death, according to Dr. Grompers. True, Hefner had a dozen or so friends that he regularly invited to Movie Night at the Mansion. None of them were life-long acquaintances, most had recently come into his life. As he advanced in years, Hefner often ate alone, read alone and spent long hours alone in his darkroom, poring over nude photos of the next Playmate. And, he most frequently went to bed alone. The Paper • Page 4 • May 17, 2018 San Marcos Mourns a Mission Hills High School Girl Killed by Car
Late Saturday morning a Mission Hills High School girl was killed when she was struck by an out-ofcontrol car that hit her on the sidewalk of East Mission Road in San Marcos, near her school.
School Principal Courtney Goode had the sad duty of sending a recorded phone message to parents later in the afternoon, confirming that a student had died in a traffic collision. Goode said crisis counselors would be available to students and staff at school on Monday.
The accident happened about 11 a.m. in the westbound lanes of East Mission Avenue in front of the Hollandia Dairy complex of buildings. Sheriff’s deputies strung yellow caution tape across westbound lanes to block traffic during the investigation. Two hours after the accident, members of the victim’s family huddled together in a nearby parking lot. The girl was walking on the north sidewalk when she was struck by
the vehicle, a sheriff’s deputy said in a statement. He gave no explanation about how the vehicle ended up on the sidewalk. The driver was not injured but the girl died before she could be taken to a hospital.
A black BMW smashed into the side of a Hollandia Dairy building, with damage at the rear of the car, too. The car apparently had left the road, jumped the curb, knocked down a small tree and hit the girl as it crossed the sidewalk. A second car, a silver Honda, also was seen off the road and stopped next to the building, 20 to 30 feet from the BMW. It was reported that the driver is a junior and a member of the baseball team. Two Mission High red and white baseball caps could be seen on the sidewalk. San Marcos Unified School District Superintendent Melissa Hunt issued the following statement:
“Right now, we are making arrangements to support our Grizzly families in the wake of this tragedy. A full crisis response team of District and outside counselors, We were only about 10 yards off the beach when I noticed Mary was having difficulty and in some distress. I alerted the Divemaster and he swam over to her and escorted her to shore. Someone had put way too much lead weight on Mary's weight belt and it had been dragging her underwater. Some of the weight was removed and the dive began again.

In 1969 my then-wife, Mary, and I decided to take a scuba diving course and earned our scuba diving certificate. The final dive of the course was an ocean dive at Morro Bay, on the central coast. We put on our neoprene wet suits, fins, tanks, masks, weight belts (to counteract the buoyancy of the wet suits and let us descend) and headed out from the beach.
We explored the beautiful world of the underwater ocean . . . saw hundreds of fish, beautiful orange/gold Garibaldi (a protected species; you can't hunt them or molest them) . . . lots of beautiful rock formations, kelp beds . . . and we found both lobster and abalone. Of the two, even back then, abalone was far more expensive to buy in a store or restaurant. We just helped ourselves. After the dive we gathered together in a pine grove on the beach. We'd pop out the abalone meat from their shells, throw them in a skillet with plenty of butter, opened a bottle of Dago Red wine, and sat around the campfire, enjoying the aroma of the pines, the wood fire, and the salty ocean air.
That's still one of my favorite memories of scuba diving . . . a good day of diving, sharing fresh caught abalone and a glass or two of Dago Red wine in a peaceful beach setting.
Mary did not pursue scuba diving . . . but I did. My cousin, Doug, had also become certified and he and I became diving buddies. (You NEVER dive alone. Diving buddies are critically important to each other). We did beach dives, we did boat dives;
social workers, and psychologists will be on site Monday and through the duration of the need of our students, staff, and families. This is a terrible loss and our hearts go out to our student's family in what we know must be unimaginable grief. Principal Goode recorded a statement for parents that said, in part:
“It is with great sadness that I call to share one of our Mission Hills students was involved in a traffic accident on Saturday and has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family.” New Palomar College Campus in Rancho Bernardo
Palomar College celebrated a major southern expansion as it unveiled its new South Education Center this week in Rancho Bernardo. The new center, which held a ribbon-cutting on Monday at 11111 Rancho Bernardo Road, will serve students in that area with a variety of core classes in a four-story building.

I dived off of Catalina Island, off San Clemente Island . . . all super experiences. One day we were headed out for Cortez Banks, a prime dive spot for huge lobster, about 10 miles out into the ocean; weather came up and we diverted to the lee side of San Clemente Island. I got seasick repeatedly while on the boat in such choppy waters . . . but once I got my tanks on and went over the side, I was fine. In the water I just enjoyed life . . . no seasickness. We were diving with two or three SEAL team members. They exercised "controlled breathing" so could stay down much longer than we amateurs; they also dived deeper and found lots of lobster. We would burn up a tank of compressed air in, maybe, 20-30 minutes. They'd be able to stay down 45 minutes plus.
Because I'd get seasick again once I got back on the boat I couldn't wait for my air tanks to be recharged so I could get back in the water and avoid being sick. I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself because I think I made four dives that day. We were diving in about 30-45 feet of water and you're not supposed to make a lot of dives as breathing compressed air, at depth, can result in you acquiring "the bends." I lucked out and even managed to avoid getting seasick on the boat trip back to the docks. I have long since given up scuba diving. Though it is an absolutely delicious sport it is also a lot of work. For every hour underwater you will likely have spent two hours preparing for the dive. As I am basically a lazy guy I decided to give up diving.

I managed to earn my private pilot’s license and took up flying. I enjoyed flying. I was managing KOWN, the Escondido radio station, and come lunch time I remember inviting Ross Allie, one of my salesmen, to join me for lunch . . . but I didn't tell him we were gonna fly over to Catalina Island for lunch. We boarded the Cessna 150 and headed down the runway. I heard a clapping noise and said, "oh, crap!" "Don't say, 'oh, crap!" a terrified Ross said. We got airborne, leveled off, and I discovered the clapping noise was a loose strap hanging outside the door and the windstream would slap it against the fuselage. I opened the door, pulled the strap in; no more problem. Ross was relieved. We saw several gray whales migrating south for Scammon's Lagoon in Mexico where they would both give birth and/or breed for future generations. We enjoyed the big, white puffy clouds set against a blue sky; life was good and the scenery wonderful. It was a pleasant flight. The airport at Catalina Island is on top of a mountain and is angled upwards. It's a fairly small strip. You descend, land, and roll out while going uphill. At the end of the runway is a sloped bank; at the bottom of the bank was (then) the remains of an aircraft that had crashed. Keeps you on your toes. We went to the Airport in the Sky, ordered a couple of Buffalo Burgers and then made the return flight home. More adventures . . . but they will wait another day in the telling.

a frenetic work schedule. This epitomized Hefner’s early years. In addition to his duties with the magazine, he hosted Playboy’s Penthouse in 1959 and 1960, and Playboy After Dark in 1969 and 1970. In 1970, Playboy became the most influential men’s magazine worldwide, with circulation at 7 million. To make travel easier Hefner obtained a black McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 airline jet that he named, The Big Bunny. In addition to his hectic travel, his attention to Playmates and 18 to 20-hour work days, he also rebranded his magazine. In 962 he’d introduced an innovative feature, Playboy Interviews, this changed the publication’s emphasis on the female body and sexual behavior to that of a serious chronicler of American society. The first interview set a high bar: Alex Haley, the author of “Roots,” interviewed the musician, Miles Davis. Soon to follow would be in-depth examinations of a host of celebrities, politicians and opinion makers: Frank Sinatra, Fidel Castro, Barbra Streisand, Martin Luther King and others. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs would get their time in later years. Two of the most important first interviews were Haley’s encounter with American Nazi Party founder, George Rockwell, and future Democratic President, Jimmy Carter’s conversation.
In his interview, the Sunday Schoolteaching Carter stated he “lusted after women from time-to-time,” overcoming his carnal desires with prayer and restraint. This aroused the news media. Many national publications and leading politicians of both parties called for Carter’s immediate withdrawal from the race for the White House. (Ah, what innocent days those were.)
In his conversation with Negrohater, homosexual-hater, “Burn, baby, burn” advocate, George Rockwell, the erudite Haley, a retired Navy veteran, and avowed homosexual treated Rockwell with respect, letting him express his views in depth. They ended up agreeing on several points – the value of family, the need for a better educational system and the reform of the American justice system. (What a departure from today’s wild accusations where citizens on both sides of an argument refuse to concede to the other on any issue.) In 1975, Hefner moved his permanent residence to Los Angeles, so he could have more direct supervision of Playboy’s production. At the same time, he became the driving force in the restoration of the Hollywood sign, calling it “Hollywood’s Eiffel Tower.” In 1980, Hefner was awarded the first Annual Hollywood Hall of Fame, as Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Over the years Hefner would donate millions of dollars to aid civil rights causes and protect
the First Amendment.
In 1963, Hefner had been arrested on obscenity charges after nude pictures of Jayne Mansfield appeared in the June issue of Playboy. The photos allegedly offended Chicago Corporation Counsel, John Melaniphy, who felt the captions beneath the images were too suggestive and thus “obscene.” These charges were dropped when the jury arrived at a no verdict decision. In 1964 the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation was established to facilitate individual rights in society, placing emphasis on civil rights and liberties.
Over the years, Hefner donated countless millions to fight censorship and encourage human sexual research by providing grants to nonprofit organizations through his Playboy Foundation. When he married Kimberly Conrad, in 1989, the demeanor of the Playboy Mansion West (also called the Holmby Hills Estate), resulted in scenes of idyllic family life. Hefner suffered a mild stroke in 1985, and in addition to many life style changes, named his daughter, Christie, as chair and chief executive officer of Playboy Enterprises. Hefner though remained the ramrod of Playboy. From 1990 until his death, Hefner devoted much of his time to philanthropic projects, such as the Sundance Film Festival’s Freedom of Expression Award. He endowed the “Censorship in the Cinema” course at University of Southern California. In 1994, he established

Could be. As an orphan boy raised in less than ideal circumstances by a devoted sister in the foothills of Missouri Ozarks, Playboy Magazine educated me in many every day, non-sexual issues that have served me well – from proper etiquette to how to invest in the stock market. In 1972, I hit a rough patch in my life. I was divorced, lost a job I loved, had my car repossessed, was evicted from my apartment, and suffered other indignities. Hoping to restore a modicum of balance in my chaotic life I wrote a two-paragraph letter to ten American executives asking for their advice. Hugh Hefner was one of seven who replied. On my original note he wrote, “We all fall short at times. The key? Find your passion and follow it.” In my opinion, Hugh Marston Hefner followed his own advice very well.

Well, we gone and went and done did it. We took our ride on the B17 from Ramona to John Wayne Airport.

Normally, you pay $425 for a brief ride in one of these. We want on press passes. Several others were 'plane sponsors' (you donate $7000 and you get a $500 leather flight jacket, flights for you and a guest anytime the Tour is on the road [provided you call in advance; you can't just show up on show days and expect a ride], other media, and friends of the Tour. It's usually easier to hop a ride on these birds when they fly from one airport to another, between shows. On show days that's how they generate revenue. 10 passengers @ $425 each = $4250 per hop, they did 33 flights while at Palomar Airport (that includes the B17, the B24 and the P51. The P51 goes for $2500 for a half hour!) One guy, the father of one of the volunteers, flew backseat on the P51, free.

DARING TO BE DIFFERENT in so many ways is this week’s mystery car. With the most efficient aerodynamically lines adding to its windcheating shape it helped its Maserati V6, which was mounted backward in this front wheel drive coupe, to have a top speed of 140 mph and still deliver 25 mpg at cruising speeds. Equipped with the world’s best four wheel disc breaking system, plus a unique self-leveling hydro-pneumatic suspension it was a joy ride in and to drive. It was Motor Trend Magazine Car of the Year in 1972. Guess who was a very early owner? Yours truly. It was my all-time favorite and the most unique car I’ve ever owned.

Animals Need Our Advocacy Too
Most of us love animals and want to see that they are treated humanely. That’s why I’m supporting several bills this session that will help ensure the safety and well-being of pets and wildlife.
It often falls to first responders to provide life-saving first aid to animals during emergency situations. This is not infrequent, as thousands of pets are rescued by firefighters and other first responders each year. Senate Bill 1305, introduced by Senator Steve Glazer (D – Orinda), would ensure that first responders and their employees cannot be held liable for civil damages or criminal prosecution if they provide pre-veterinary emergency care to an injured dog or cat at the scene of an emergency.
Another bill, AB 2791, by Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D – Torrance), speeds the adoption of impounded kittens and puppies which are currently subject to a three-day hold requirement. The animals would be made immediately available to non-profit rescue groups, relieving shelters from the need to use their limited space &
resources to hold and care for them.
Our love of animals does not just include the four legged variety. SB 1017, authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica), would limit the use of mile-long drift gillnets intended for swordfish and thresher sharks. Unfortunately other species including whales, dolphins and sea lions are often trapped in them. Much of this unintended catch, 20% of which is already dead, is thrown back. Since new fishing techniques have been developed that limit unintended catch, it’s time California joined Washington and Oregon in outlawing the use of large mesh drift gillnets. I am proud to join outstanding local groups like the San Diego Humane Society in support of these important measures. I have always dreaded old age. I cannot imagine anything worse than being old.
How awful it must be to have nothing to do all day long but stare at the walls or watch TV. So last week, when the mayor suggested we all celebrate Senior Citizen Week by cheering up a senior citizen, I determined to do just that. I would call on my new neighbor, an elderly retired gentleman, recently widowed, who, I presumed, had moved in with his married daughter because he was too old to take care of himself. I baked a batch of brownies and without bothering to call (some old people cannot hear the phone), I went off to brighten this old guy's day. When I rang the doorbell, this "old guy" came to the door dressed in tennis shorts and a polo shirt, looking about as ancient and decrepit as Donny Osmond. "I'm sorry I can't invite you in," he said when I introduced myself, "but I'm due at the Racquet Club at two. I'm playing in the semifinals today."
"Oh, that's all right," I said. "I baked you some brownies..." "Great!," he interrupted, snatching the box, "Just what I need for bridge club tomorrow! Thanks so much!" "...and just thought we'd visit a while, but that's okay, I'll just trot across the street and call on Granny Grady..." "Don't bother," he said, "Gran's not home. I know, I just called to remind her of our date to go dancing tonight. She may be at the beauty shop. She mentioned at breakfast that she had an appointment for a tint job."
I called my Mother's cousin (age 83), she was in the hospital... working in the gift shop. I called my aunt (age 74); she was on vacation in China. I called my husband's uncle (age 79). I forgot, he was on his honeymoon.
I still dread old age, now more than ever. I just don't think I'm up to it.....

on a quick half hour flight, I dunno (yet). But add in that a replacement engine for a P51 is $160,000 and for one of the bombers, $48,000 (each). Plus maintainence, plus housing and feeding and transporting the volunteer staff, plus a small stipend for some, not all. They don't do this for the money or perks; they just love aviation and the history.

I did learn that most of the pilots got their pilot's rating through the Collings Foundation, sponsors of the Tour. One bomber pilot told me he got his multi-engine rating and training in flying the bombers, courtesy of the Collings Foundatin, in return for the countless hours he had volunteered. Another young volunteer told me he was working on his Private Pilot's License but that he only had 3-4 hours. But, those 3-4 hours were in a P51! How many of us get to train for a pilot's license in a P51?! (I soloed in a J3 . . . a small Piper aircraft, 65 hp engine, tail dragger - a plane you had to fly. Today's Cessna's 150's and 172's pretty much fly themselves. I'm glad I learned how to fly on a plane you had to fly . . . if there's ever an emergency, I know how aerodynamics work and the flaps and all. I do believe I could get her down on the ground safely . . . those who learn on planes that pretty much fly themselves could be in a real pickle in an emergency. My opinion (but shared by many pilots who learned to fly on tail draggers).

Arguably, the “Battle of Britain,” which took place in the summer and fall of 1940, saved the free world from Nazi tyranny and possible world domination.
After Adolf Hitler’s lighting success in capturing most of Western Europe using the German army’s “Blitzkreig” (lighting warfare) tactics, only Great Britain remained to be harnessed in the Nazi yolk of dictatorship. But all that stood in the way of German domination of England, Scotland, and Wales was the English Channel and the world’s most powerful flotilla: Britain’s Royal Navy.
At that time, German Luftwaffe (air force) was the most powerful in the world with more than 2,500 fighters and bombers; Britain’s Royal Air Force numbered less than 800 fighters and bombers. Probably around 600 usable aircraft was a more realistic number. Hitler decided that bombing British airfields and demolishing the RAF would be a prelude to a Channel crossing and land invasion from the French coast some 25 miles away.
Luftwaffe leader and Hitler’s No. 2, Herrman Goering, underestimated the tenacity of the British people’s will to resist and the bravado of RAF pilots. In order to equalize the numbers, British pilots would have to shoot down invading German planes on a four-toone ratio. Hitler was confidant his bombers could overwhelm the British with brute force, knocking out coastal defenses and shipping, eventually giving the Germans air control over the whole of southern England. When the initial mission failed
to destroy the RAF, Hitler launched a night-time bombing campaign, or as the British called it, “Blitz,” of London. So confident Goering was of his air force’s superiority, he bragged to Hitler that if any British bombs ever fell on Berlin, he mockingly told the Nazi leader that he could call the rotund air marshall, “Meyer,” (a Jewish name considered by the Nazis to be a supreme insult). When the first RAF bombs rained down on Berlin, no one knows what Hitler said to Goering, but it’s a good bet it wasn’t pleasant. Hitler under estimated the stamina of the British people and the skill of RAF pilots and their aircraft. While the Me109 fighter was a fast and agile aircraft, the RAF “Spit fire” was a superior weapon.
The Brits united under Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s leadership to defend their nation at all costs. They refused to give up, even as their cities were repeatedly bombed. The British had an advantage over the Germans: radar, which they invented. The Brits knew exactly when the Luftwaffe was coming, in what strength and at what altitude. RAF fighters, “Spitfires” and “Hurricanes,” kept German air raids at bay, but at great cost to the RAF. British and German aircraft factories were turning out planes as fast as possible to keep up with the daily destruction. Still, when the Battle of Britain ended, the British had lost some 900 aircraft to the Germans’ 2,300 planes. The RAF had nearly equaled their needed “four-toone” combat ratio.
Though the United States had yet to enter the war, President Roosevelt persuaded Congress to approve the “Lend-Lease” agreement, which sent ships, planes, guns, ammo, and desperately-needed food and medical supplies to the beleaguered British people. Historians generally agree that if the British nation had not stopped the Nazi aggression, an attack on North America would have been imminent. That one air battle might very well have preserved our democratic way of life instead of living under a dictatorship. One footnote to history – Goering asked his top fighter ace what he needed to defeat the British? Flight leader Adolf Galland replied: “Give me a squadron of Spitfires.” Goering was not amused.

and drive us home. We decided that was too much work and hassle so we just rented a car, had a leisurely (though slightly more expensive) drive home, stopped at a Sizzler Restaurant in Vista (which we adore) and had a sumptuous feast . . . then made the final drive home.
A fun day, a tiring day (witness my two hour nap upon arriving home . . . and evelyn falling asleep on the couch at the same time, albeit for about an hour instead of two) . . . today, I'm refreshed, filled with fun memories. Evelyn is much more agile than I am. Bomber aircraft are spartan in construction. No frills, damn little space. Try walking the catwalk between the bomb racks (right above the bomb bay doors). About 30" in width, one has to turn sideways to transit the catwalk . . . and going from one compartment to another is an adventure (and exercise) in itself. I was huffing and puffing by the time I got from the tail section to the nose of the aircraft.
Evelyn made it all the way to the bombardier's section, in the nose of the aircraft. Naught but plexiglass all around, top, sides, bottom . . . everywhere you looked was just . . . airpace. Unobstructed view. The only thing blocking it was a Norden bombsight, once one of our nation's most secret pieces of equipment. Men died to keep this instrument from falling into enemy hands.

Back on the ground, John Wayne Airport just outside the Lyon Air Museum Next year, I hope to grab a ride on the B24; this one is the only one still flying. Southern Dames of America Held SemiAnnual Meeting – The Poinsettia Chapter, Southern Dames of America, held their semi-annual meeting at the San Diego Center for the Blind. Guests Danny Casara and Scott Leason spoke about Operation Rebound, part of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Casara, a US Army veteran, was deployed to Iraq in 2005. His M113 tank rolled over an anti-tank mine, severely injuring him. Multiple breaks to multiple bones has led to over 36 surgeries, 24 of which
were just so he could walk again. Leason, a US Navy veteran, was working night shift in a convenience store when a robber shot him in the head leaving him blind and without a sense of smell. Both men told of how Operation Rebound gave them support in their efforts to rebuild their lives. Leason, despite his blindness, is a champion surfer and marathon participant. Dozens of beach towels and bottles of sunscreen were brought in for Leason’s surfing group. Chapter president, Wanda Prosser, presented each with a certificate, and checks were sent in their honor to CAF Operation Rebound. Dangerous Amendment Will Threaten Farm Animal Safety Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has introduced a dangerous “Protect Interstate Commerce Act” (H.R. 3599 / H.R. 4879), which was previously defeated when he tried to add it as an amendment to the 2014 Farm Bill. This act seeks to restrict states’ ability to enact higher levels of farm animal welfare standards and would nullify existing state standards. Oceanside Charitable Foundation Awards $63,300 in Grants – The Oceanside Charitable Foundation (OCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, recently held their Grant Awards Celebration at the Oceanside Museum of Art where they announced they have awarded $63,300 in grants to strengthen quality of life for local youth and families.
“Oceanside is known as one of the most diverse communities in the region, with a long history of civic participation and engagement among those who work and live here,” explained Vince Alessi, Board Chair of OCF. “By giving together through the Oceanside Charitable Foundation, individuals and organizations are strengthening their commitment to the community and investing in solutions that develop and enhance the Oceanside they envision.” The 2018 grants underscore the importance of supporting all residents in Oceanside, and will increase support for underserved residents in the community and provide more opportunities for families and particularly youth to thrive. Our youngest daughter Julie, left this Earth at 6:07 AM Friday May fourth. We are only now beginning to understand the toll that her long illness and passing has taken on all of us. Nome and I find that in many ways we put our lives on hold during the long months of her illness. Not wanting to laugh or enjoy things, letting things slide at home and in our business, just drifting in a sad, painful cloud. As parents, it is our duty to protect our children and we felt helpless as we watched her slip away from us day by day. That part ended last

It was comforting to know that Julie was never alone, whether home or in the hospital, she was always surrounded by crowds of friends and family. It was wonderful the way everyone came together in support of Julia and one another. Everyone came to see and be with her.
The fact that Julie asked to be cremated and that there was no immediate ceremony following her death left us with a cold emptiness. My brother Doug and his wife Bernie flew from South Carolina to spend that first weekend with us and brother Gary came in from Indiana the following Monday and stayed with us through Thursday. Their instinctive presence was a Godsend for us. They really helped us get through a tough time and we will never forget their love and compassion.

Polly and her “Puglets”! at the Humane Society – Mother’s Day—San Diego Humane Society is celebrating the newest mama in their care. Polly, a three-year-old pug, was found as a very pregnant stray in Escondido. The person who found Polly brought her to the Escondido Campus, where we were able to give this mother-tobe the care she needed. We saw right away that Polly was a sweet dog who would make someone a wonderful companion. But being able to help Polly find a new home wasn't the only reason we were glad she made it to our shelter. When Polly went into labor, she delivered one healthy puppy naturally before complications required an emergency caesarean to deliver the rest. Thanks to friends like you, our veterinary team was able to safely deliver eight more beautiful puppies. Today Polly is recovering in a loving foster home and is a wonderful mama to her nine beautiful babies Finn, Rey, Yoda, Solo, Jabba, Poe, Chewie, Leia and Rose. While the members of this little family won’t be ready for adoption for a few weeks, you can go to our Facebook page for Day of Giving on Thursday, June 28 for an update on their journey. Gofri Needs a Home
My name is Gofri. Gofri means "waffles" in Hungarian. I am a lovable year old puppy who was rescued in Hungary by an animal rescue organization, "FAPF (Foundation of Animal Protection in Füzesabony) Hungary). I look nothing like a waffle but I am Hungarian and look like a blond German Shepherd / Labrador. Discovered in a Dump. My story is a long and sad one although I am only a little over a year old. But here is a quick version of my life so far. Nothing is known of me or my life before I was 10 weeks old when FAPF, the local rescue group, found me sniffing garbage heaps looking for something to eat. Adopted. Then a couple months following my rescue by FAPF, I was adopted to an American military family and when they were sent back to the U.S., to a military base in southern California, they took me with them. Then something bad happened shortly after getting to the U.S. The husband left the family. He decided his freedom was more important than his family so he just left his wife, his kids and me.
The wife (my Mom) and kids went to live with her parents. She begged her folks to allow me to come because the kids really needed me now.
An Unwelcome Guest. Sadly, the grandparents were not happy about me being there and to make it worse, to be cruel, another kid living in the home would steal my food bowl and I would go without eating. I went to sleep many times with no dinner. I couldn't understand why he would do that. So I learned that not all people are good people and they are not like the great people at the rescue. I learned that sometimes they will take your things away and when you go to get your stuff back they beat you.

When I saw the kid taking away my food once, I growled at him because I knew I wouldn't get to eat again. The grandmother saw this and she would beat me with a broom stick so hard it even cracked some vertebrae in my back and it really hurt a lot. Someties she would just beat me because she was angry I was there. It wasn't very fair and I didn't understand

Then one day they told my Mom, "Get rid of the dog. He is behaving badly. He is a bad dog. He can't stay here anymore. We gave him a chance."
The Next Stop - The County Shelter. Mom told me, "I am sorry Honey. You have to go. This is not a good place for you anymore." She opened the back door to the car and said "Let's go for a little ride in the car." I jumped right in like I always did. The kids piled in too. I always loved to ride in the car with my head sticking way out of the window with my tongue flapping in the wind.
After about twenty minutes we stopped at this place where there was a lot of barking and really sounding scary. It didn't feel good. I sensed something not very good. The sign on the door said, Mojave Animal Shelter - Kern County.
Mom opened the car door and said, "C'mon Gofri. Come on with me." We went to this office across from a bunch of kennel buildings` and we had to take a number and wait until they called our number. After a couple minutes they called our number and we went to the front desk. My Mom filled out a form and with a big sigh and her hand trembling handed my leash to a big guy working there. Mom knelt down and kissed me on the top of my head and with a quivering lip said to me, "Now Gofri, you be a good boy. Make me proud of you and everything will be fine, you'll see. I promise, Honey." With that she turned away quickly and ran to the car. The dog handler said, "Come with me little fella." I was pulling on the leash trying to walk back to the car with my Mom. Then he put me in a big cage on wheels. My Mom was walking away faster and faster. I had this sick feeling in my stomach. She was actually leav-

I started running back and forth in my cage barking, trying to say "Hey, you love me, remember? What are the kids gonna do?" She ran faster to the car. Her head was down a little and I could hear her crying. Then after a moment the car sped off fast. The kids were looking at me through the rear window crying with their hands on the rear window on top of where my nose marks were. I never saw them again. My heart sank. Then things got kinda gray. A Temporary Home. Just as I was going to give up for good and just lay down to die, one day a lady came to the shelter. She had heard my story from a friend of hers and wanted to foster me. I couldn't believe it. My prayers were answered. I made it out of there just before they were going to take me to the room where no dogs ever came back from.
The lady's name was Kelly and she was pretty. (The most beautiful person in the whole world to me.) She came from far away Encinitas a couple hundred miles to the south. She knew she couldn't keep me but she decided to take me home to foster me so I wouldn't have to stay in a terrible, uncomfortable and noisy kennel while a home was being found.
I have been here now for about two months and the couple I have been with have some plans which will make it hard for them to keep me there much longer. I have to find another home soon and hopefully a permanent one that will love me like these people. I hate to go but the RIGHT home that could be my forever home would be awesome.
Time to Find My Forever Home. My volunteers said that the best way for people to learn about me would be for them to help me write up an ad to let people know where to find me. They said we have to let people know what a treasure you are. They said if we wish real hard, it's just possible that the people who are SUPPOSED TO FIND ME might just find my little ad on this whole world wide web, come see me and want me for their very own. Is that you? Are the one who is supposed to find my little ad and take me home? Geez, I hope so. I am not much trouble but I am still a puppy so I need to get daily exercise. An active family would be my best home. Kids are fine but older children would be better than younger children because they can be taught how to behave around animals. There is a re-homing fee to reimburse some volunteers who paid for my veterinarian expenses but that's all and is only a small percentage of what my costs have been.
