Volume 47 - No. 19 By Friedrich Gomez

Very early on in life I came to the steadfast conclusion that all moms are, in fact, secret agents. While we are away in kindergarten, or perhaps at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house, moms slip away, like C.I.A. undercover agents, and attend secret classes at “Mom School.” Haven’t you ever noticed that all moms talk alike and think alike? They even have their own secret codes to communicate with one another. In Mom School they all learn the same vocabulary and phrases which they often use against us in our growing-up years.

“I don’t care who started it!” “Wait till your father gets home!” “Because I said so, that’s why!” “If everyone jumped off a bridge would you do it too?!” “Your face is going to freeze like that!” “Get in the car!” “Get out of the car!” “Eat your dinner!” “Put your shoes on!” “Go to sleep!”

In Mom 101 class they sometimes all stand up and recite aloud these fundamental phrases together:

If you think you have a snowball’s chance of fooling mom, you better think twice. You have absolutely no chance against their arsenal of skills. How else can you explain their extraordinary powers of intuition, ESP, and Xray vision? All moms have super powers that we don’t even know about. How else can you explain their ability to hear a sneeze through closed doors, in the middle of the night, 3-bedrooms away, while dad is snoring up a storm? In Mom School, moms even learn how to secretly use psychology on us. For example, they all know that the quickest way for a mother to get her children’s attention is to sit down and look comfortable. It works every time!

Just when mom is relaxing and sitting down and pretending to look comfortable – viola! – all of a sudden we kids have to stop our shenanigans outside to go and bother her. And moms know that. They often set these psychological traps for us so that they can get our undivided attention.

Moms are super-duper smart. If you think “Bill Nye, the Science Guy” on TV is smart, think again. Mom’s quick-thinking scientific brain averted a disaster at our house. She told me to quit playing with the light switch (turning it off-and-on) because I could easily start a fire!

Moms are so smart, in fact, that they know when something is about to happen, waaay before it happens. That’s because all moms have a special radar and ESP device implanted in their heads. For example, moms know that when their kids are too quiet in their rooms – they’re up to something no

good.

You see, mom’s ESP and radar devices come with a special operating manual which only moms can read and understand. For instance, one passage from the manual says: “Silence is golden . . unless you have kids, then it’s just suspicious.”

To prevent children from trying to overrun the house, moms also learn survival skills by secretly attending military hand-to-hand combat classes. Sometimes with the Navy Seals, the Army Rangers, or at the Marine Corps’ elite “How to Fight Dirty” field-andobstacle courses. Consequently, out-of-control water squirt-guns and pillow fights can easily be put-down with minimal effort from mom.

Spanking is a last resort that is learned in these combat training classes; moms first learn how to use certain command-phrases and special warnings to defuse any situation first, before resorting to spankings. All moms, everywhere, learn these same basic warning phrases:

Obituaries Memorials Area Services Page 12

“I’m gonna give you until the count of three!” “If you don’t clean your room, all this stuff is going into the trash!” “Do that one more time and I’m turning this car around!” And, of course, the ever-popular classic: “Listen, I brought you into this world and I can take you out!”

I don’t know about you, but I’m plumb-fascinated with moms. I once overheard my mom’s secret conversation over the phone with another mom and I got an earful. I heard my mom say: “My kids wanted to know what it’s like to be a mom, so, I woke them up at 2 a.m. to tell them my sock came off.”

Moms can also be super-sneaky. To infiltrate our world they sneakily learn our lingo and even become like ‘music rappers’ to learn ‘street smarts’ and ‘come-back-phrases’ to put us in our proper places, like: “My nickname is ‘Mom,’ but if you don’t get your tiny butt into bed my full name is “MomHas-Had-Enough-of-This! For Real!” They also say, “What part of you don’t you understand?”

One day, when mom yelled at us, I told her that in school I learned from my teacher that it isn’t nice to shout at people. But my mom was calmly waiting with her combat-training skills when she unloaded on me: “YOU TELL YOUR TEACHER I’M NOT YELLING WHEN I RAISE MY VOICE!! I CALL IT ‘MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING’ FOR THE SELECTIVE LISTENER!” At the time, I wasn’t sure what all those big words meant that mom used that day. So I never told my teacher anything. I think it was best that I didn’t. After all, my teacher was a mom, herself, and moms tend to stick together. They totally understand each other. Did you know that moms actually rule the world? We just don’t know it. The world begins and ends with them. For instance, as an American, I’ve often wondered why North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, hates us so much. I think he might have ‘mom issues.’

You see, as an absolute, all-powerful dictator in his own country, Kim Jongun doesn’t take orders from anyone . . . except his mother; and I don’t think

that sits well with him, and that’s why he’s always in a nasty mood. I don’t think his mom is happy at his bad behavior and I think that makes him throw temper tantrums towards us here in the United States.

And all this is not making his mom happy. I’ll bet that if you snuck into the house of Kim Jong-un’s mother, you might see a plague on her wall that would read: “If mama ain’t happy – ain’t nobody happy!” It also might have something to do with North Koreans being very tiny people compared to us Americans; I mean ‘tiny’ south of the equator (if you catch my drift). Aside from that, they are a lot shorter in height than we are. In school we learned that the average North Korean height is only 5’ 5” while we Americans average out at 5’ 10.” My friend’s dad said that maybe Korean leader, Kim Jong-un’s obsession with large missiles is, somehow, a compensation for some of his own (personal) shortcomings.

I’m not sure about all that but whatever the cause I wish his mom would talk to him more. I have a feeling that she is a very nice person. A lot nicer than he is. It’s hard to believe but Mother’s Day almost never happened here in America. Shocking but true. In 1908, Congress first turned the idea down flat. They thought that if they made Mother’s Day an official holiday that they would have to make “Mothers-inLaw Day” a holiday also. And that left a bad taste in their mouths. But six years later, President Woodrow Wilson did the right thing in 1914 by signing

Mother’s Day into law, and to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor our mothers. Amen, for that.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world in over 46 different countries. It is getting more and more popular every year in China, for example, just like in our own country. A recent study found out what many of us already knew – that more phone calls are made over Mother’s Day than most any other special day of celebration! Hot damn, I like that! To me, that law is beyond cool.

Trust me on this, we can never do enough for dear ol’ mom. After all, moms don’t just bring us into this world, they do a helluva lot more once we get here. For instance, I once saw an inscription that read: “Happy Mother’s Day to someone who carried me for 9 months physically, and 29 years financially.” That says it all.

My mom bore the rich Irish name of “Molly,” but to me, my younger sister and two older brothers, we all just knew her simply as “Mom.” Mom passed away just 12 days after Mother’s Day several years ago, but to me it still feels like yesterday. She had a bad heart, but to me that heart was pure as gold and perfect in every way. By my calculations, if she would have lived a thousand years she still would have passed away too soon. As a little boy I would never leave her side. My world seemed to revolve around her. To me, she was the wisest and most powerful person in the uni-

It is not nice to make fun of elderly people when they eat. Particularly spaghetti. They (elderly people) have fought many battles, many wars, just so you could have the freedom to eat Italian food and spill it all over yourself . . . or to laugh at others, less fortunate than you, who occasionally, whilst trying to carry on an earnest conversation, occasionally spill a slight amount of pasta and/or meat sauce on their shirt, their bib, or their table. e. I hope you are very proud of me for finishing the spaghetti in such an exemplary manner. f. I hope you feel really, really lousy for having laughed at elderly people. verse. So much so that even my fear of the dark, as well as of the dreaded boogie man who lived under my bed, all seemed to evaporate as long as I held her hand or clasped tightly to her dress. I became so close to my mom that my friends nicknamed me “Apron Strings,” because I always stayed close around her like, well . . . like apron strings.

To this day, I’ll see something that reminds me of my mama. It may not necessarily be sad; it may even make me smile slightly, or perhaps even chuckle out loud. At a recent Cruisin’ Grand event here in Escondido, I strolled inside a gift shop and saw some famous sayings from mothers which we all had heard when we were small. There was one on motherly logic, “If you fall off that swing and break your neck, you can’t go to the store with me!” Or this gem of momlogic, “When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me!” In zillions of ways, moms are simply amazing. Have you ever noticed how mothers will do anything for us? And how much we truly feel loved and accepted by them? Even as a tiny boy of only 5 years of age, I knew how much moms will even sacrifice for us. We weren’t poor, but we were also far from being rich. My mom was magic. When we would have pie together and there was only one piece left, she’d smile sweetly at me, hug me gently, and then say, “Go on, Honey – that’s your piece. I already ate mine.”

I never saw but one piece of pie, but I believed my mom that there must have been another slice that she ate when I just wasn’t looking. At night when I curled up safely with my mama with sleepy eyes, I would sometimes hear her stomach growling. But at the time, I never knew what hunger pains were.

The Sensitive Man

A woman meets a man in a bar. They talk; they connect; they end up leaving together. They get back to his place,

And as he shows her around his apartment she notices that one wall of his bedroom is completely filled with soft, sweet, cuddly teddy bears. There are three shelves in the bedroom, with hundreds and hundreds of cute, cuddly teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall!

It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing the display.

There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the length of the middle shelf, and huge, enormous bears running all the way along the top shelf. She found it strange for an obviously masculine guy to have such a large collection of Teddy Bears.

She is quite impressed by his sensitive side but doesn't mention this to him. They share a bottle of wine and continue talking and, after awhile, she finds herself thinking, 'Oh my God! Maybe, this guy could be the one! Maybe he could be the future father of

Thanks to my magician-mom, who could eat a slice of pie without me seeing her, my stomach never felt empty to make that same sound that her stomach sometimes made at night. My mom lived on a shoestring budget and sometimes she didn’t pay the utility bills with the money my dad would give her. Instead, she would sometimes use it so she and I could go to the zoo or maybe we’d take a Greyhound bus to visit her parents (Grandma Josephine and Grandpa Ralph). To this day, not even my siblings knew of this, except now, if they are reading this article. But it’s the God’s truth.

Diverting my dad’s utility bill-money for fun adventures with mom was ultra cool. It was a ‘mother-child’ secret, which dad would sometimes later raise a fuss over. My dad was a great provider, but a parsimonious one. He knew how to pinch a penny.

I never knew how little money mom had of her own, until after she died. She once secretly sold her wedding ring for $25 and somehow kept it a secret from dad all those years. She used that ‘ring money’ along with some of her own, so that she and I could take the Greyhound bus to visit kinfolk up north. Again, that’s Gospel.

My two older brothers loved playing outside and never spent as much time as I did with mom. Didn’t matter; mom always loved us all the same, regardless. My sister, Debbie, came much later and like me, she was also in

my children!'

She turns to him and kisses him lightly on the lips He responds warmly.

They continue to kiss, the passion builds, and he romantically lifts her in his arms and carries her into his bedroom where they rip off each others clothes and make hot, steamy love. She is so overwhelmed that she responds with more passion, more creativity, more heat than she has ever known.

After an intense, explosive night of raw passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow. The woman rolls over, gently strokes his chest and asks coyly, 'Well, how was it?' The guy gently smiles at her, strokes her cheek, looks deeply into her eyes, and says: 'Help yourself to any prize from the middle shelf.' ••••• If everyone jumped off the docks I would too. awe of mom’s wisdom and boundless affection which she showered on us all.

A neighbor of ours also reared three young boys and a daughter, but her kids were even worse than us Katzenjammer Kids -- they were like bottled lightning compared to us; all full of mischief, plus some. I once overheard their mom say in a tired voice: “You know when your life has changed when going to the grocery store, alone, is a vacation!”

The Katzenjammer Kids was a popular American comic strip which I loved. It ran in the newspapers from 1897 to 2006 and it was my Grandpa Marshall’s favorite! The word “Katzenjammer” is a German word meaning “caterwaul” (literally: the wailing of a cat). The two kids that always got a spanking in that cartoon strip were Hans (translation: John or Jack) and Fritz (translation: Fred). As I mentioned, it was my Grandpa Marshall’s favorite comic strip and he sometimes referred to us boys as “The Katzenjammer Kids.” And like the Katzenjammer Kids comic strip, we often got a royal spanking!

Speaking of spankings, have you ever noticed that all moms spank the same way? That’s because they all learn the same technique in “Moms Military Spanking School” where everything is done in marching-rhythm or cadencestyle. When moms are spanking you they never break their rhythm and voice commands. They would alternate their words with the actual smacking sound of the spanking itself. They all sound like this when spanking: “This is (spank) going to (spank) hurt me (spank) more than (spank) it hurts

Mom never ceased to amaze me. She just seemed to know everything! She was the smartest person I ever knew. Even to this day, her wisdom has helped guide me through the darkness, and the pain, and the fear which comes with being left alone, without her, to hold my little hand, or pick me up and squeeze me and make me laugh out loud with her, as she once did. It’s hard for me to understand that I will never, again, be allowed to hug and tell my mom how much I love her – ever again. She was truly my best friend, as well as being my mama.

But it wasn’t all sunshine and sugar, no siree Bob! I still remember how she deserted me when I had to start kindergarten when I turned 5 years old! It’s the untarnished truth! My mom, who was my best friend, world’s smartest teacher, protector against all boogiemen and monsters that lived under my bed – she deserted me, at kindergarten school!

God bears witness to what I’m about to say.

My own mom, my own flesh and blood, had me momentarily distracted (magicians call it “misdirection”) while she somehow slipped away, completely unnoticed, while I sat on a carpet with the other kids as our kindergarten teacher proceeded to entertain us! When I discovered she had deserted me, well, I was angrier than a piranha that just had root canal! Seriously.

way from the elementary school to our modest house on 7568 Westmoreland Street! Mom always made me remember our own street address just in case I ever got lost and had to tell the police where I lived.

Anyway, as I walked the remaining few yards to the house, I remember seeing my mom doing the wash when she suddenly looked up at me and gasped out loud! Scared me silly because I knew I had done wrong. Before she could say anything I said, “Mama, there’s no school today!” Of course I didn’t make any sense cause she just took me there! And besides, I was only 5 years old at the time and that’s how 5-year-olds think! It was the best I could do under the circumstances. Anyway, mom marched me all the way back to school and made my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Ratlitch, pay better attention!

At such times when my mom would become exasperated with me she would repeat that same old mantra that all mothers must’ve learned when they graduated from Mom School: “One day you’ll have kids of your own and I hope to God they turn out just like you!”

At the time I never could figure out what that meant. I still can’t.

My dad was a busy working man. Dad’s name was Ernest, but he had the coolest middle name: Rangel. To me, Rangel was very western-sounding and God knows I loved western movies! My great paternal grandparents must’ve liked western films, too, because they named my grandpa, “Marshall.” Thank God my grandma was named Mary, and not Annie Oakley!

erns a lot because he once owned his own saloon, uh, I mean bar, up in San Bernardino, which quickly became a popular watering hole back then. Each time I visited him there he would take me behind the bar, pop open the cash register, and give me a silver dollar! Yep, Grandpa must’ve loved westerns, after all, he Christened my dad with the middle name “Rangel.”

According to experts, the surname “Rangel” originated in Germany over 900 years ago, back in the year 1100. But that takes all the romance out of it, so I just prefer to think of it as a western movie-name. It’s more fun that way for me.

My favorite movies to this day are still westerns like, “Pale Rider,” starring Clint Eastwood, “Silverado” and “Dances With Wolves,” both with Kevin Costner. I also love Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in the “Lonesome Dove” TV mini-series and own the DVDs.

Unlike any of my older brothers, I would spend hours talking to my maternal grandma (who was born in Julian) about our Native American roots. It was Elvis Presley’s biography that inspired me to chronicle this part of our life. Presley’s three-time great grandmother was named “Morning Dove” (1800-1835) and was a fullblooded Cherokee. Scores of our most famous country-western singers, and cowboys like Roy Rogers, proudly claim part Native American ancestry, including my fave actor, Tommy Lee Jones (from “Lonesome Dove”). My sister, Debbie, and I would spend hours at the San Diego Museum of

encountered an Audi A4 driver, a 21year-old man, and a passenger at a gas station on Deer Springs Road near Interstate 15 north of Escondido. A drug-sniffing dog reacted to the sedan, leading to a search of the car. Agents discovered 23 bundles of cocaine stashed in a makeshift compartment built into the exhaust system, officials said.

The cocaine weighed 58 pounds and has an estimated street value of $876,900, officials said. The driver and his passenger, a 26-yearold man, were arrested.

The drugs and the two occupants were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Audi was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol. Pedestrian Killed in Oceanside

A man who was crossing an Oceanside street mid-block was hit by two vehicles and killed Friday night, police said.

The pedestrian, 39, was not in a crosswalk as he walked south across Mission Avenue just west of Interstate 5 about 9:40 p.m., police Lt. Dan Sullivan said.

A westbound Ford pickup hit him, and the driver stopped. But a second vehicle hit the victim while he was lying on the ground, and that driver did not stop, witnesses told police. The pedestrian was dead by the time officers and medics reached him. The pickup driver was not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and speed did not appear to be a factor, Sullivan said.

Where is Gary? There is a phenomenon within the nail salon industry. You find a manicurist you love - s/he is superb at giving manicures and, in my case, pedicures . . . and then the nail salon sells and new people come in and the manicurist you preferred either moves on voluntarily or is terminated by the new owner(s). I had such a manicurist. Young guy named Gary. He was from Vietnam and his English wasn’t the greatest but he was so good with pedicures, nice and gentle, so efficient, that I looked forward to seeing him at TK Nails and Spa, Escondido.

(Incidentally, those ornery rascals known as women take great delight in keeping the secret from men that pedicures are really relaxing. I had to get them because I’m a diabetic and diabetics have to take good care of their feet and toes . . . but I learned it’s also a great experiencel). So, where did Gary go? I’d like to find him again for my next pedicure.

ciplinarian, but a handsome one. When he was in his 20s everyone told me he was a dead-ringer for the old-time movie actor, Robert Stack, and looking back on it, he was! And I have the family photo album to prove it.

Man at Balboa Park; studying the Kumeyaay exhibits there. Again, it was my mom who prodded me to do this. “Grandma won’t always be around,” mom often told me, “So ask your questions now.”

I recently rented some old Robert Stack movies from the local public library just to take another look at ‘dad’ in his greener years. Stack used to star in the popular ABC-television series, “The Untouchables” (1953-1963), during which Stack played famous true-life law enforcement agent, Eliot Ness, who enforced Prohibition in Chicago, back in the day. Dad . . . er, I mean, Robert Stack, also was the popular host on television’s “Unsolved Mysteries” (1987-2002).

I think moms are visionaries and can see things in the future. Again, they probably all learned this in Mom School.

Whenever I would spend sleepovers at my friends’ house, I found their moms talked and acted just like my mom. For instance, whenever we wanted his mom to take us somewhere like the beach or shopping mall, my friend’s mom would sometimes tell us, “Look, I’m not running a taxi cab service here!” On her kitchen wall, next to the clock, she had a funny sign: “Good moms let you lick the beaters after making chocolate frosting for the cake. Great moms turn the beaters off first!”

It was mom who wore the pants in the family. My aunt Mercedes (mom’s sister) used to joke to me, “Your daddy may wear the pants in the family, but your mama tells him (when) to put them on!”

Somehow, that joke got funnier as time passed and I got older to fully understand it. Talk about a delayed reaction to humor! That’s how a mother’s wisdom often works -- it doesn’t always make sense back then but with the hindsight of the years – wow! – my mama was wiser than Solomon, himself!

For some reason, I found that funnier than my friend.

Moms are used to being on roller coaster rides because their lives are a series of unexpected turns and a whole bunch of “ups-and-downs.” One minute they’re happy, the next minute they’re not. For example, as a little boy Michael Jr. told his mom he wanted to be a doctor someday. His mom was so proud she choked-up with tears. Then Michael Jr. said: “Or maybe a dinosaur.” (Michael Jr. grew up to be a professional comedian and can be seen today in the “Thou Shalt Laugh” DVD at the Escondido Public Library at Kalmia Street. You should rent it.)

By the way, I always thought my Aunt Mercedes was named after a car because my uncle would jokingly call her “motor mouth.” She didn’t mind cause she had a lot of other names for him too. One thing I learned early-on from mom is that no matter how old you are, you’re still mom’s little child, at least in her eyes. To put it in a nutshell, mom’s wisdom

Getting back to dad, he was a strict dis-

and discipline prepared me for life. You see, life doesn’t come with a manual -- it comes with a mom. Dad passed years before my mom did. Dad could have lived a lot longer, but cancer struck him down. Mom just pressed on, but I think part of her heart went with him.

All of us have or had moms. And all of us truly understand how much they all mean to us. They spank us or scold us when we are bad, but they also spoil us and wipe away any sad tears we might have earned out in the trenches of warfare – like in the dreaded school yards, where bullies can run rampant, destroying egos and self-esteem, left, right, and center! Not to mention taking our lunch money from us. I miss my mom, a lot. And every once in a while a coworker or neighborfriend will tell me an amusing encounter with their mom that makes me smile and reflect on my own mama. The other day my friend, Hans Mueller, told me a funny mom story that he had read about: A son received a text message on his cell phone from his mom: “Your great-aunt just passed away. LOL.” Confused, the son quickly texted her back, “Mom, why is that funny?!” Equally confused, his mom texted her reply, “It’s NOT funny! Why did you ask me that?” That’s when the son texted, “Mom, LOL means: Laughing Out Loud.” A few minutes later, his mom texted, “I thought it meant Lots of Love! I have to call everyone back!”

It’s truly amazing how our worlds revolve around our moms. Just think of it. Mom and motherhood are words that instantly pop up visions of happiness, holidays, family picnics, bright sunshine, and feelings of love and

unconditional acceptance.

And all moms are the real super heroes in life. Yes, Batman, Spiderman, and other superheroes may live vividly on the movie screen, but, our moms – well, they’re the real stuff, the real deal, the real curfew police, too!

Sometimes when you think you don’t have a friend in the whole wide world, or that you just hate yourself and slam your bedroom door in an expression of ultimate frustration, your mom knows just when to talk, and just how to say the right words that have more power, more medicine, more healing than any super hero you’ve ever grown to admire. My very close friend, Heather, said she laughed out loud the other day when she read of a mother who texted her daughter, “Honey, can you come over and take a selfie of me.” Heather swears that really happened to her, personally!

Because memories are forever, there’s no getting away from motherly humor and love. The other night on “The Tonight Show,” host Jimmy Fallon said, “I once got a text from my mom where the words ‘You’re amazing’ autocorrected to ‘You’re adopted.’” Jimmy Fallon said he was thunderstruck!

At various moments I can both laugh out loud, or suddenly become quiet and hang my head in knowing that I truly miss my mom and will never again hug her, and look into her angel-like eyes and see myself reflected in them and realizing that no one could ever possi-

bly love more than a mother loving her small child. Memories can be bittersweet.

Science doesn’t show it, but moms permeate the universe like stardust. Ships are referred to in the feminine pronoun such as ‘she’ or ‘her.’ When I was away from mom on the high seas, serving my country, all military personnel referred to all our warships in such a manner: “She’s going out for sea-trials next week,” or “Her top speed is 40 knots in battle alert.”

Even our war birds (military planes to you civilians), are collectively referenced as ‘she’ or ‘her.’ And our own Native Americans refer to this spinning blue planet which nurtures, feeds and raises us, as simply, “Our Mother Earth.”

I was the first in my family to discover my mom’s lifeless body. Like daggers to my brain, the scenario is forever etched. There is nothing in earthly existence that I can do to bring her back or, to somehow, ease the pain. No matter how many years have passed, the trauma of dealing with this eternal separation never, ever eases up. There are some things which time cannot heal, no matter how often we hear that refrain. A mother’s love runs too deep, too powerful, too rich and overwhelming to be fixed by the band-aid of passing-time. Contrary to that belief, I miss my mom more and more with each passing day.

Yes, I was the first to find mom’s lifeless body. It’s was around nine in the evening and my neighbors could hear my piercing screams of anguish, like a lone coyote pup who bays at the lifeless moon! My neighbor across the street ran into my house and clutched me to her bosom as I sobbed endlessly, my body shook in spasms, and my universe seemed to be spinning away from me. My neighbor shouted my name over and over again until she finally got my attention. She locked eyes with me like a laser beam, her forehead gently touching my forehead, and my lips fell to a trembling silence. To my grave, I will forever cherish what she relayed to me. With a motherly voice, my neighbor said these words to me: “Listen to me!! Just the other day . . . your Mama was telling me just how proud she was of you! And . . . just how much she loved you . . . and how happy you made her!” Like a blur, in slow-motion, I could see the paramedics surrounding my mom’s fallen body and how they tried so valiantly to revive her. My neighbor, Ann, bless her soul, led me limply into our back rumpus room and twirled her fingers through my hair, and gently kissed my tear-soaked cheeks. She, too, was a mother and she instinctively felt my pain of eternal separation.

notion of “Love at first sight” was just an illusion; a fanciful notion found only in unrealistic soap operas and syrupy love songs. Yet, when my mom clutched me tightly she would often say to me: “When you were born, and the nurse first placed you into my arms, believe me, it was love at first sight.” I believe mom, over the universityeducated psychiatrists.

As a small child I would always tell her, “Mommy, you are the smartest person in the universe.” And she would answer me, “Honey, you’re gonna grow up someday, and things will change and you won’t always think of me this way. You’ll have your own life, and you won’t need me anymore.” I remember staring long and silent at what my mom had just told me. I answered her as best I could, “Mama, I will always need you in my life.” Then I hugged her.

What troubles me is that mom always taught me the wisest things in life, and yet, I found a serious flaw in her reasoning. Sometimes, when I’m walking all by myself on a sunny day on Grand Avenue here in Escondido or in San Diego, on Armstrong Street where I finished my 4th and 5th grades in elementary school, I’ll revisit our modest house which still stands. I’ll walk the familiar streets, remembering things from the past and, sometimes, I’ll smile slightly and look upward to the endless sky and whisper: “Mom, you were wrong. I still miss you. And I still need you in my life.”

Recently, at Cruisin’ Grand, here in Escondido, I ventured into a corner store and in the rear of the store I saw a plaque sitting on the floor. It had various quotes of mothers to their children. I found one sentence that seemed to leap out at me. It said something I needed to hear. It read: “May you always know how deeply you are loved, how your life shines brightly. And how your heart is never alone. May our spirits be connected always.” It was as if my mom was in that store that day. As if she were speaking to me, again.

Mom, if you’re reading this, somehow, somewhere, please know how much I still love you. And how much I still miss you. And Mom, I only hope I’ve made you proud of me. Happy Mother’s Day to you, Mom.

And to all the other moms out there reading this, may you have the best Mother’s Day ever! I send you all my love, along with bushels of hugs.

Perhaps an hour had passed before family and friends made their way to the house. My younger sister, Debbie, and older brother, Mario, both arrived with their respective families.

The doctors said my mom’s heart stopped beating, because it was flawed. I still find that hard to believe. How could such a perfect heart made out of solid gold, ever be flawed? To me, mom had the purest heart fashioned out of 24-carat gold bullion. She had the heart of a saint.

Mom always taught me things that sometimes made me question the world around me. For example, a psychiatrist on television once said that the

Awareness of Genetic Testing Saves Lives

Getting a diagnosis of cancer can be scary and uncertain. As a member of the Assembly Health Committee, I am seeking ways to improve access to new and innovative treatments, cures and therapies to prevent diseases and save lives. This session I introduced Assembly Bill 1386, establishing a women’s health pilot program to raise awareness of genetic testing for the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes, in newly diagnosed patients, many of whom are not given the information. Breast and ovarian cancer are among the leading causes of cancer deaths for women in the United States. If a genetic test is appropriate, the results can clarify the type of treatment needed so that the patient has a better chance of a successful outcome. BRCA genes, which pass from parent to child, help a cell’s genetic material to function properly. However, mutations in BRCA genes can occur, which severely

AB 1386 will promote genetic testing through public awareness aimed at newly diagnosed women in underserved communities, including those on Medi-Cal or who have limited access to health insurance. increases a woman’s risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Women at high risk for having a BRCA mutation or who are newly diagnosed, often don’t get genetic testing or the chance to speak with a genetic counselor to help them weigh the necessity of a test. Women in underserved communities are even less likely to get genetic counseling and testing. According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 80.9 percent of high-risk patients wanted testing, but only 39.6 percent received counseling and only 50.9 percent of these have actually had a genetic test.

“Just in Time” for Foster Youth Has New Home – “Just in Time” (JIT) for Foster Youth has moved to its new youthfriendly headquarters just in time to mark the beginning of May’s National Foster Care Month. JIT programs (https://jitfosteryouth.org/) and offices are now located at 4560 Alvarado Canyon Road, #2G, off Mission Gorge Road, San Diego, offering easy access, more space for transition age foster youth, and easy across to the Grantville Trolley Station across the street. JIT’s mission is to help foster youth achieve self-sufficiency and well-being after they leave the foster care system. The goal is to provide a community of caring adults, offering consistent, long-term help so the young adults can thrive and enjoy productive, satisfying lives. The move consolidated multiple former workspaces in Old Town, bringing Youth Services, Volunteer Engagement, Investor Stewardship, and Administration under a single roof. The building offers more space for larger workshops and additional room to house donations for My First Home. The connection to JIT often starts with meeting an emergency need, such as rental assistance or a bus pass or help with setting up a first apartment. Other gaps to fill might include assistance with money management, educational support, job skills, networking, transportation, and employment. Help through providing some basic furniture or academic tool can begin the process of making a significant difference in a young person’s life.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

Who Were The Best and Worst Presidents

Many of us have lived to witness a number of U.S. Presidents and the question often asked is: who was the best you remember?

I was six-years old April 12, 1945, the day Franklin Roosevelt (1933-54) died, so I can’t comment too much on his tenure other than what history tells us – and recent years have brought more critical comment. I well-remember Harry S. Truman’s (1945-54) nearly two terms. At the time he wasn’t all that popular with my parents and grandparents. Looking back as times pass, one has to ask: where’s Harry and his common-downhome sense and logic when we need him? Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-60) was one of our most popular presidents even though he had his detractors. Democrats chided him for taking naps and playing too much golf. There were complaints he didn’t do any work, but those naysayers forgot Ike was an Army General used to delegating and not doing things himself. Those in the know agree his White House ran fairly smooth with only minor hitches. He left us our fabulous Interstate system – an idea he got studying Hitler’s autobahn at the end of the war. In college political studies, historical rankings of presidents are garnered from surveys conducted to judge theirsuccess. These surveys are of academic historians and political scientists or popular opinion. The rankings focus on the presidential achievements, leadership qualities, failures, and faults, but I find personal observations often can be a better barometer.

Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and George Washington are usually the three highest rated presidents among historians. The remaining places in the top 10 are often rounded out by Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry S. Truman, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Andrew Jackson, and John F. Kennedy. More recent presidents such as Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton are often rated among the greatest in world opinion polls, but do not always rank as highly among our (U.S.) presidential scholars and historians.

Kennedy (1961-63) followed Ike. It was my first election (1960). I didn’t vote for JFK, but I wept when he was gunned down – as I saw it, it was an assault on America. Today’s Democrats would recognize him as more conservative than liberal.

The bottom 10 often include James Buchanan, Warren G. Harding, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Ulysses S. Grant, Zachary Taylor, and George W. Bush. Buchanan always is listed in last place and often is blamed for allowing the Civil War to take place.

David H. Donald, noted biographer of Abraham Lincoln, relates that when he met John F. Kennedy in 1961, Kennedy voiced his deep dissatisfaction and resentment with historians who had rated some of his predecessors. Kennedy said that "No one has a right to grade a President -- even poor James Buchanan -- who has not sat in his chair, examined the mail and information that came across his desk, and learned why he made his decisions."

A 2010 Siena poll of 238 presidential scholars found former President George W. Bush was ranked 39th out of 43, with poor ratings in handling of the economy, communication, ability to compromise, foreign policy accomplishments, and intelligence. Meanwhile, the then-current president, Barack Obama, was ranked 15th out of 43, with high ratings for imagination, communication ability and intelligence and a low rating for background (family, education and experience). Time will tell if either assessment holds up. In 2012, Newsweek magazine asked a panel of historians to rank the 10 best presidents since 1900. The results showed that historians had ranked Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama as the best since that year.

A 2015 poll administered by the American Political Science Association among political scientists specializing in the American presidency had Abraham Lincoln in the top spot, with George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bill Clinton, Andrew Jackson, and Woodrow Wilson making the top 10.

Abraham Lincoln

Incumbent President Donald Trump is not yet included in any survey, as none have been conducted since his January 20, 2017 inauguration. However, at the end of his term(s), it will be interesting to see how he fares with historians. One thing is for certain for future scholars of history, Trump’s tenure will not be a boring read. The Black Bra (as told by a woman)

I had lunch with 2 of my unmarried friends. One is engaged, one is a mistress, and I have been married for 20+ years. We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes. Here's how it all went.

My engaged friend: the other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my dreams...I love you.' Then we made passionate love all night long. The mistress: Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat, under it only the black bra, heels and mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night. Then I had to share my story: When my husband came home I was wearing the black bra, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. When he came in the door and saw me he said, "What's for dinner, Zorro?" For the over 50 crowd

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways...yadda, yadda, yadda And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of fifty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it! 1) I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the

5) Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car or those great 8 track players. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig? 6) We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

7) There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends." OH MY GOSH! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

Understanding the Costs of Reverse Mortgage Loans

Older Americans are facing a financial crisis in retirement. Simply put, their income from savings, Social Security and pensions is not keeping up with the cost of living longer.

For most older Americans, their wealth is in their home equity. In fact, this population has accumulated more than $6 trillion in home equity (https://www.nrmlaonline.org/about/pr ess-releases/senior-home-equityreached-6-1-trillion-q3-2016), funds that are increasingly being leveraged to finance retirement through reverse mortgage loans or other home equity solutions.

Fortunately, over time the costs to obtain a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan (reverse mortgage loans that are insured by the Federal Housing Administration

(FHA)) have come down substantially.

The closest comparable loan to a HECM reverse mortgage (pronounced “heck-um”) is a traditional FHA loan since both of these are governmentbacked loans and borrowers pay insurance to the government on that loan. The MIP, or the insurance that the borrower pays for having a HUD-backed loan, is lower for a HECM reverse mortgage with less than 60% of its maximum claim drawn than the MIP charged on a forward FHA loan. AAG started to see this trend after the HUD mortgagee letter 2013-27 came out in September 2013. This changed the amount that is charged for MIP, and thus, most borrowers who closed loans after this time saw a significant reduction in costs to their loan. Most reverse mortgage loans are HECM loans and are insured by the FHA. It’s easier to understand the costs of a HECM loan by breaking down the fees:

1. Mortgage Insurance Premium (MIP): The initial MIP will be .5 percent or 2.5 percent, depending on your disbursements. Over the life of the loan, you will be charged an annual MIP that equals 1.25% of the outstanding mortgage balance. The MIP on a traditional FHA loan is 1.75 percent.

2. Origination Fee: This fee is highly regulated by HUD/FHA. A lender can charge the greater of $2,500 or 2% of the first $200,000 of your home's value plus 1% of the amount over $200,000. HECM origination fees are capped at $6,000.

3. Interest: Varies lender to lender

4. Servicing: This pays for the ongoing servicing of the loan that the lender provides.

5. Third-party fees: This can include appraisal, title, homeowners insurance, inspections, repairs, etc.

A reverse mortgage loan is highly regulated, just like most financial products. To qualify: • The borrower must be 62 years or older; • The home must be the borrower’s primary residence; • The borrower must have enough equity in the home to qualify; and • The borrower must undergo a financial assessment to ensure they are able to continue paying for property taxes, homeowners insurance and home maintenance.

With a HECM reverse mortgage loan, homeowners are not required to make monthly mortgage payments. Just like a conventional mortgage loan, they may face foreclosure if they do not comply with the loan terms, including paying property taxes, homeowner's insurance, and home maintenance costs. This is why it is important to discuss your options with a financial advisor and/or estate attorney, if you are considering a reverse mortgage loan. You can learn more about reverse mortgage loans at www.nrmlaonline.org.

My Favorite Animal

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken."

She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.

I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much.

She used to live with a 10-year-old and has met many strangers, all of whom she adores! She always wags her tail when meeting new people and she loves to give kisses. She is house-trained as long as she has access to outside. Stuffed dog toys are her favorite and she enjoys snuggling with them and kissing them. She also LOVES to play and can be quite goofy. How to Make People Happy

We recently held a series called “Getting More Joy out of Life.” It was a blast! We discovered ways to generate personal joy, and ways to help others feel happier too. Here are five suggestions that will help you help others be happy:

1. To add joy to others, first add joy to yourself. – Make a list of 15-20 things that fill your emotional tank. Post it on your bulletin board and do more of these over the next 6 months. Happiness is contagious. Become a carrier! 2. To add joy to others, INjoy them. – Don’t just hang

out. Review your day’s calendar every morning and determine to enjoy every meeting and event you’re involved in that day. 3. To add joy to others, help them with their list. – Once you’ve produced a “tank-filling list,” help a friend make a list for themselves. Then start doing those things with them. 4. To add joy to others, catch them doing something right. – Few things make you feel better than a compliment. (We studied the Apostle Paul’s writings for this one. Practically every one of his letters in the New Testament contains praise for things the recipients were doing right.) 5. To add joy to others, point them to something bigger than themselves. – We were made by a big God and therefore have a need to do things bigger than ourselves. Pointing people to their God-given mission of honoring Him and serving others lifts people to higher levels. What makes you happy? And which of these five would you like to practice with those you love? For more suggestions, visit http://newsongchurch.com/ser mons/service-type/oceanside/.

Internal combustion engine powered vehicles were invented in the early 1800s but until Henry Ford began mass producing automobiles in the 1920s, motor vehicles were toys for the wealthy and transport vehicles for military and business. When motor vehicles became affordable to the public, they changed our lives. Computers were invented in the 1930s and were also initially a tool used by business and the military. The IBM PC in 1981 brought PCs to the people in the same way that Henry Ford’s assembly line brought cars to the masses. In the early years, non-business PCs users were mainly hobbyists who, like the “shade tree mechanics” of the automobile days, replaced components and

The “interstate highway system” and the “Internet” both caused a revolution in their respective technologies. The “interstates” built in the 50s and 60s changed how products were shipped, how we traveled and where we shopped. Shopping centers, supermarkets, massmerchandisers, restaurants and suburban communities clustered around the Interstates. New towns and businesses sprung up and old towns and businesses died. The growth of the Internet since 2000 is having a similar affect. Increasingly we shop “online” for groceries, take-out food, medicine, tools and pretty much anything that can be delivered. Brick and mortar retail stores are closing and shopping centers storefront vacancies are on the rise. Technology creates winners like Amazon and losers like Sears. The changes are accelerating, so where is it leading? It’s great fun to speculate. Retail shopping centers could be converted into much needed housing. Think how many luxury and low cost apartments would fit in a Costco or Wal-Mart store. She is survived by her sons, grandson, and many extended loved ones and friends. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her, and forever loved in our hearts. There will be a celebration of Delia's life at The Oaks, 1915 N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd., San Marcos, CA on Saturday, May 27th at 3:00 P.M.

Only a minute fraction of the time and money spent on a college education is spent on actual learning. Smaller more intimate Internet based learning institutions are already starting to replace the pedagogue palaces we call universities. Learning process professionals could replace teachers and professors in monitoring the behavior and progress of students throughout the education industry. Internet connected K12 learning centers could be small and neighborhood centered operating holistically as they did in the “good ole days” before gigantism took over the education industry. rity, entertainment, education, medical monitoring and communication features. All our erstwhile computer functions (word processing, photo editing, spread sheets, tax prep, and data storage) will be “cloud” based. Each family member will have their own access device, (smart phone, tablet, chrome book). Homework, taxes and other activities where a large screen, keyboard and mouse make work more convenient would be accomplished by plugging their access device into the big screen Internet interface in the “family room”. The “family room” is the converted garage because you won’t need a car. You can voice-text for a self driving auto any time you need to go somewhere, but where are you going to go? Everything comes to you. Your home robot will even style your hair and trim your nails. “Junior’s Barber Shop” will be history. How does the Computer Factory fit into this “brave new world?” That’s easy, someone has to show you how to use all this crap, and that’s us.

A Notice of Preparation (NOP) has been prepared to notify potential responsible and trustee agencies, interested parties, and members of the public that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), as the Lead Agency, will prepare an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the Pipeline Safety and Reliability Project – New Natural Gas Line 3602 and De-rating Line 1600 (PSRP, or the proposed project). On September 30, 2015, San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Company (the applicants) requested a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (Application No. A.15-09-013) from the CPUC to construct, operate, and maintain an approximately 47-mile natural gas transmission pipeline (Line 3602) that would carry natural gas from SDG&E’s existing metering station in Rainbow, California, to a tie-in with SDG&E’s existing system within U.S. Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego, California. The proposed project also includes de-rating, or lowering the pressure of, SDG&E's existing Line 1600 to convert its function from transmission to distribution. The proposed project is located in San Diego County, California, and crosses: the cities of Escondido, San Diego, and Poway; unincorporated communities in San Diego County; and federal land (MCAS Miramar).

The NOP contains more information regarding the proposed project facilities and the CPUC’s environmental review process. The NOP is available for review at http://sandiegopipeline-psrp.com.

The NOP is being circulated for a public review and comment period beginning May 9, 2017, and ending on June 12, 2017. The CPUC is soliciting input from potential responsible and trustee agencies under CEQA, interested parties, and members of the public on the potential effects of the proposed project, the scope of the EIR, and the issues and alternatives to evaluate in the EIR. Comments must be received, or postmarked if hard copy, by June 12, 2017.
