It’s now the month of May in 2018 and Mother’s Day is upon us. Just a couple days ago, a close friend sent me a parody version of Britain’s writer/poet, Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem, “I Luv Me Mudder and Me Mudder Loves Me.” In part, this humorous, re-created version goes as follows: “Who carried me to me widdle bed, And sang lullabies to me sleepy head, And spanked me till me buns was red? on Earth – you still had a mother who once cradled you in her loving arms; nurtured and protected you at all costs; comforted and washed your pain away with her tears; and would gladly have laid her life down so that every heartbeat of yours would continue – even if she knew she would no longer be there to hear it. Aside from their unconditional love and sacrifice in rearing us, all mothers can be downright hilarious, even without intending to be. When famous American physicist, Steven Chu, won the coveted 1997
Nobel Prize in Physics (along with two colleagues), he became the toast of the world! But when the celebrated scientist called his mother, he was instantly grounded in reality. As the celebrated physicist, Steven Chu recalls in his own words: “I called my mother up when they announced the Nobel Prize! She said, ‘That’s nice – and when are you coming to see me next?’” All moms work and function on a totally different set of laws, ethics, and principles. Their paradigm of thinking is an uncharted one. It

matters not what great accomplishments you made, nor how much money you’ve accumulated, they simply want to be in your company. Pure and simple. And yet it takes us a lifetime to learn this equation. FIRST 6 YEARS: Mom knows everything. 8 YEARS: Mom knows a lot. 14 YEARS: Mom knows nothing! 18 YEARS: Mom is outdated!! 25 YEARS: Maybe Mom knows. 35 YEARS: Before deciding, let’s ask Mom! 45 YEARS: OMG! My Mom was right about everything!
It’s far from easy being a mom. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld said: “A 2-year-old is kind of like having a blender – but you don’t have a top for it!” All moms are like a new form of school calculus. You’ll never fully understand it. Moms also seem to be magical, mysterious, beings that dwell among us. 82-year-old American humorist and journalist, Calvin Trillin, has lived most of his life and has only managed to partly glimpse into that strange uncharted world of motherhood: “The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.”

A policeman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was okay, however, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs in his crotch.
Worried that it might be a second surgery and the doctors hadn't told him about it, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown up enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his pubic hair and private parts were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off easily --- if at all.
Written on the tape in large black letters was the sentence, "Get well soon, from the nurse in the Ford Explorer you pulled over last week." Kind of brings tears to your eyes doesn't it?
And yet for all they do and sacrifice for us, we rarely do the same for mom. Quite the reverse, we often drive them to the ends of their rope. The other day I saw a hand-painted sign on the back of an old parked truck that read: “DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP A BOTTLE OF WINE FOR YOUR MOM FOR MOTHER’S DAY. AFTER ALL, YOU’RE ONE OF THE REASONS SHE DRINKS!” Canadian author and screenwriter, Kelly Oxford, removes the gloves and gives a raw, bare-knuckle assessment of the rite-of-passage for all future moms: “If you like people who do stupid s**t all the time, become a parent!”
Hmm, and yet, for all the crap we make them go through when growing up, moms still love us, come rain or shine. We kids can be ruthless; challenging; rebellious; and a perpetual headache for mom – yet, she sees us as simply an “unfinished masterpiece” that just needs nurturing. Oddly enough, we are perfect in mom’s eyes, which defies all known human logic and reasoning. Yet, there sits a thousand-yearold Chinese proverb that time has never changed: “THERE IS ONLY ONE PRETTY CHILD IN THE WORLD, AND EVERY MOTHER HAS IT.” I often wonder what other moms of famous people would’ve said to their kids. For example, the Jewish mother of Albert Einstein might have said something like: “Albert! The Sensitive Man
A woman meets a man in a bar. They talk; they connect; they end up leaving together.. They get back to his place, And as he shows her around his apartment she notices that one wall of his bedroom is completely filled with soft, sweet, cuddly teddy bears.
There are three shelves in the bedroom, with hundreds and hundreds of cute, cuddly teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall! It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing the display.
There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the length of the middle shelf, and huge, enormous bears running all the way along the top shelf. She found it strange for an obviously masculine guy to have such a large collection of Teddy Bears. She is quite impressed by his Sensitive side but doesn't mention this to him.
They share a bottle of wine and continue talking and, after awhile, she finds herself thinking,
'Oh my God! Maybe, this guy could be the one! Maybe he could be the future father of my children!' She turns to him and kisses him lightly on the lips He responds warmly.

Or the mother of Jonah who, according to the Bible, lay within the belly of a great fish for 3 whole days and survived. Perhaps Jonah’s mother inquired: “So, Jonah, tell your mother the truth – where have you been the last few days?” Or perhaps the mother of Benjamin Franklin, when he struggled to get his kite off the ground during an electrical storm, desperately trying to test “lightning-electricity theory,” his mother might have said: “Oh, my God – just look at him! He really needs a little more tail!” Then, there’s the mother of Attila the Hun (406–453), eventual ruler of the Huns and one of history’s most feared enemies in Central and Eastern Europe. When Attila the Hun was just a small child his mother – when hearing his little footsteps coming through the front door – may well have asked: “Is that you, Hun?” All throughout human history, great men and women all had to answer to their mothers.
In real life, the late comedian, Phyllis Diller, often quipped about
his arms and carries her into his bedroom where they rip off each others clothes and make hot, steamy love. She is so overwhelmed that she responds with more passion, more creativity, more heat than she has ever known.

Then, I want to move-in with them!” For all we put them through, mothers have to be true superheroes, except they don’t wear capes. Besides, Superman is just a superhero now and then -- moms are superheroes all the time. Big difference.
Very early-on in life, I came to the steadfast conclusion that all moms are, in fact, secret agents. While we are away in kindergarten or, perhaps, at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house, moms slip away, like C.I.A undercover agents, and attend secret classes at “Mom School.” Haven’t you ever noticed that all moms talk alike and think alike? They even have their own secret codes to communicate with one another. In Mom School they all learn the same vocabulary and phrases which they often use against us in our growing-up years. In Mom 101 class, they sometimes all stand up and recite out loud these fundamental phrases together: “I don’t care who started it!” “Wait till your father gets home!” “Because I said so, that’s why!” “If everyone jumped off a bridge would you do it too?” “Your face is going to freeze like that!”

The Coyote Principle
CALIFORNIA: • Long time California Governor Jerry Brown (former mayor of Oakland) is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor’s dog, then bites the Governor. • The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie “Bambi” and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural. • He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it. • He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases. • The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged. • The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals. • The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the area. • The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world. • The Governor's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. The state spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training for the nature of coyotes. • PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the state. Mother’s Day Tea Planned at San Marcos Senior Center - The City of San Marcos will host a Mothers Day Tea at the Senior Activity Center located at 111 Richmar Ave., San Marcos, 92069, at 3pm on Friday, May 11. In Mom School there is one test called “The Mess Test.” All moms must pass this test to determine if they are ready for Motherhood. The Mess Test is given to all moms from a certified mental institution. The test includes smearing peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Then placing a fish stick behind the couch and leaving it there all summer. Once becoming a mom, all mothers are now required to continue attending advanced Child-Rearing classes, which is taught by a former mental patient. In these classes, mothers are taught basic things they will soon learn from their own children, such as:
1. A 3-year-old’s voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant. 2. A magnifying glass can start a fire even on an overcast day. 3. VCRs do not eject peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 4. Marbles in the car’s gas tanks make lots of noise when driving. 5. The spin cycle on the washing machine makes the cat dizzy.
Aside from learning these basic truths, all mothers are required to memorize certain things, which are

1. “Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too.” 2. “Here, let me smell that shirt again – oh yeah, it’s good for another week.” 3. “Oh, you’re wearing your Superman pajamas to bed? Sure, you can have the top bunk.” 4. “Yeah, sure. Just leave all the lights on . . . it makes the house look so much more cheery!” 5. “Oh, is that the cat you’re holding? Oh sure, your daddy’s shaving razor is in the bathroom.” In simulated field-training classes, moms also become super-efficient and quickly learn multi-tasking. For example, the baby’s pacifier falls on the floor and you quickly give it back to the baby – after you suck the dirt off of it because you’re too busy to wash it off. That’s a passing grade!
In addition to all this motherhood training, moms are still required to attend special “Survival Skills and Hand-to-Hand Combat Classes,” usually taught by the Navy Seals, the Army Rangers, or at the U. S. Marine Corps’ elite “How to Fight Dirty” field-and-obstacle courses. Some basic training includes survival skills and learning certain things that all moms need to know, for example:
Deep Pit BBQ to Honor Military and First Responders - The Escondido East Rotary Club’s Annual Deep Pit BBQ will take place this Saturday, May 12th and will honor Active and Retired Military and Police and Fire Department personnel. The event is held at the Kit Carson Park El Arroyo Picnic Area and the public is welcome to attend. The Rotary club will be giving special recognition to Escondido Police Chief Craig Carter, Escondido Fire Chief Rick Vogt and military veteran Shawn Ryan. The BBQ runs from 11am to 2pm with great food, games, and entertainment by Calico Ridge. There will also be a silent auction and raffle. The Presentation of Colors will be provided by the Orange Glen High School ROTC at 12:15pm and the Escondido Police Department K-9 unit will be putting on a demonstration at 12:45pm. Active Duty Military, On-Duty Escondido Police and Fire personnel and their families eat for free. Military, Police and Fire Veterans tickets are $15 each, and general public adult tickets are $20. Children under 12 years of age are $10/person, and a Family Pass for two adults and three children is $50.00.
Republican Club of Ocean Hills to Welcome Two Key S.D. Republicans at Meeting – On Wednesday, May 16, join the Republican Club of Ocean Hills (RCOH) to meet two key Republicans, San Diego County Assessor Ernie Dronenberg and local Republican Activist Waskah Whelan. Mr. Dronenberg was elected Assessor, Recorder, and County Clerk (ARCC) in 2010, re-elected in 2014, and will be on the June 5th Primary ballot. Also, he is chairman of the CA Assessor Association, Legislation Committee. Guest speaker Waskah Whelan is the Precinct Operations Chair for the San Diego County Republican Party. She is Past President of the San Diego County Republican Women (SDCFRW) and currently serves as the 2nd VP Membership for SDCFRW. On Mother’s Day, all moms should be made to feel extra special. My dad always tried to make mom feel special on Mother’s Day, but it sometimes back-fired on him. One year we had a big family gettogether for mom. After we all ate, mom started to get up to wash the dishes. That’s when dear ol’ dad proudly said: “Oh, honey! Leave the dishes. You can always do them tomorrow.”
I’ll never forget the look on mom’s face that day when dad told her that. It was the same exact expression on her face when she used to change diapers.
Sometimes mothers need “time off,” in order to maintain their sanity. After all, their job is never-ending, like 24/7 at the hospital trauma

Waskah Whelan will address two topics: “Getting Out the Vote - Why it Works! and “What the Democrats Are Up To This Year and How to Stop Them!” Ms. Whelan graduated from SDSU with a M.A. degree in Education, and worked for the San Diego City Schools for over 30 years as a teacher in various elementary grades. She has been involved in every Presidential Campaign from 1980 to present, and has also been a Delegate to the California Republican Party Conventions representing SDGOP Chairman Tony Krvaric and Senator Joel Anderson. Waskah is married to Tom Whelan and has lived in Pt. Loma since 1978. She is very active in the preservation of historical homes and buildings in the area.

ward. It’s not that moms don’t love us all the time, they do. But, they are only made of flesh and blood and, therefore, have limitations. All moms occasionally require some “free time” away from the kids, just so that moms are not found standing out on a ledge somewhere. Once when dad asked mom what’d she’d like on Mother’s Day, mom just said with a very tired expression on her face and a very weak voice: “I just want you to drive 7 hours east with the kids in the car and then turn around and come back.” I think dad got the point mom was trying to make.
Anyway, this year Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 13 and I’m sure many of you will be taking mom out to lunch or dinner and then spoiling her the entire day. It’s hard to believe but Mother’s Day almost never happened here in America. Shocking but true. In 1908, Congress first turned the idea down flat. They thought that if they made Mother’s Day an official holiday that they would have to make “Mother-in-Laws Day” a holiday also. And that left a bad taste in their mouths. But, six years later, President Woodrow Wilson did the right thing in 1914 by signing Mother’s Day into law and to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor our mothers. On 05-02-18 at 9:47PM, Escondido police officers responded to a disturbance call in the 600 block of N. Grape St. When officers arrived several people were seen fleeing from the area. Officers searched the area and located a deceased 36-yearold male in the backyard of a residence with multiple gunshots wounds. Officers detained several people at the scene. Their involvement in the crime is still being determined. Escondido Police detectives responded to the scene to investigate the incident.
The crime is believed to be gang related. Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Escondido Police at 760-8394722, or leave an anonymous tip at 760-743-TIPS (8477). Kiwanis Awards Scholarships to Local Marines
The Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to four outstanding local Marines
and a Marine spouse. Susy Arneson Guthrie and her husband, Larry Guthrie, started the privately funded Roberta and Bob Gibson Memorial scholarship program last year for Marines and their spouses who are transitioning to civilian jobs.

I love kids . . . but when they are illbehaved while I’m dining in a restaurant, or anywhere else, I would gladly string up the parents . . . for it is the parent’s fault when kids are loud, noisy, rude, yammering, running all over the restaurant.
Good Lord! What dumbness much reside in the heads of these parents that refuse to teach their kids how to behave in public.
Man About Town
A tour group of seven Tibetan Monks will conduct a Blessing of the Animals at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society's new San Diego Wildlife Center in Carlsbad on Saturday morning, May 12th beginning at 9:00 AM.
Then, from 10 AM until noon, the monks will be available to bless pets brought in by members of the public.
While RCHS has participated in a number of Blessing of the Animals events during the last 58 years, this is the first time that the wildlife under our care will be included and it's the first time the blessings will be conducted by monks from India.
Two of the monks speak English, and they will be accompanied by a translator.
We had a very nice pasta dinner with a glass of Chianti at one of my favorite eateries (not naming the restaurant because it was not their fault they had idiots for patrons). What promised to be a relaxing and enjoyable dinner was anything but. The food was good but I couldn’t wait to get the check and get out and away. The loudmouth kids and their dad left before we did but the mood was broken and the dinner had not been enjoyable.
Earlier, we had transported Evelyn to the fantastic Physical Therapy unit at Kaiser in San Marcos. I watched and listened as Mark Hruska, the physical therapist, put Evelyn through her paces. Absolutely fascinating to listen to him talk and explain how this exercise affected this muscle and this exercise affected that muscle. Clearly, Mark knows his stuff!
If someone is considering entry into the medical field one might consider physical therapy; typically, a clinic is headed up by a physiatrist (an MD who specialized in Physical Medicine/Physical Therapy). He or she supervised a crew of highly trained and competent physical therapists. It’s magic!
Escondido Country Club Clubhouse Demolished
Escondido Country Club demolition crews began working last week to tear down the remains of the clubhouse at the long-closed Escondido Country Club, six months after a fire destroyed the abandoned building. The demolition and cleanup, which will take about a month, comes after the earlymorning fire tore through 12,000-square-foot clubhouse on Nov. 22.
The entity paying for the clean up is New Urban West, a developer with plans to buy the roughly 109-acre property and put up 380 homes. New Urban West said the project will include a $10 million clubhouse with a restaurant, pool and banquet facilities, and a 29-mile greenbelt. New Urban West has agreed to purchase the land from investor Michael Schlesinger, who bought the struggling country club back in 2012 and closed it a few months later. The deal, however, is held up by a lawsuit filed late last year by opponents hoping to block the housing development. These folks help us heal so much more quickly and to understand how our bodies work.
One thing I found of interest - it takes at least 12 weeks for the body to heal from the major trauma it has experienced by being cut open and tended to. During that 12 weeks you are likely to be constantly fatigued. Why? Because your whole body, both physical and emotional, is pouring its healing power into recovery. This explained why Evelyn has been so tired of late. She’s a very active woman but noticed she needed to take a nap now and then and even after the nap she felt tired and weak. What’s more, if you try to be a “tough guy” and tough it out . . . you simply take away the body’s struggle to heal itself. My hat is off to the folks at Kaiser. I’ve been a patient for 25+ years and have almost always been treated like royalty. I’m constantly amazed at their competency, their cheery disposition, and their treatment.

They lost their daughter, Julia, to cancer. Julia had been ill for some time and suffered a great deal. When we got the news from Paul we were at a loss for words. We all knew this was coming but it's still a kick in the guts to hear the news. About the only good thing about this is Julia is no longer suffering such enormous pain. Not much we can do but to let Paul and Nome know we're sharing this pain and feeling badly for our dear friends of 20 years.

One of my neighbors told me that he just read where North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, had asked his mother what she wished for on Mother’s Day and she replied: “Thank you, Son, but all I want is a bit of caring and looking-after.” So, Kim Jong-un put her in a nursing home.
I don’t put a lot of stock in that story, to be honest, but that’s my neighbor. Regardless of the veracity of such story-telling I do recall my Jewish friend, Marilyn, telling me that she asked her mom what she wanted on Mother’s Day and her Jewish mom said: “A doctor for a son-in-law.”
Regardless of Jewish, Christian, Moslem, Hindu or any other spiritual belief, it is a universal trait with all mothers of the world to teach religion in one form or another, such as when they tell us: “You better pray that will come out of the carpet!” Mothers also are equipped with keen foresight, like Nostradamus, when they say: “Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident.” All mothers are also meteorologists
with great training in weather forecasting and weather analysis. This is usually evident when mom tells us: “It looks like a tornado swept through your room!”
Regarding Time-Travel, mothers are on the cutting edge when they say: “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!”
In short, mothers are great teachers in a vast variety of subjects, topics of science, and everything inbetween. For example:
On Logic: “Shut your mouth and eat your food!” On the Circle of Life: “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!” On Hypocrisy: “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times – don’t exaggerate!!!” On Becoming a Contortionist: “Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!” On the subject of Irony: “Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about!” On Preservation and Order: “If you two kids are going to kill each other, do it outside! I just finished cleaning the house!” On Reason and Common Sense: “If you cut your toes off with that lawn mower -- don’t come running to me!” Moms sometimes reach the end of their rope. That’s understandable. I mean, think about all the things you did behind her back and almost
caused all her hair to fall out! And that goes for dad as well. Some things never change. The other day while visiting my friend David, I heard him ask: “Hey Pop, do you mind if I take Friedrich on a ride in your new BMW?” That’s when I saw his dad slowly put his newspaper down and calmly walked up to his son and – nose touching nose – David’s dad slowly saying: “Now Son. Be very careful with my BMW.” Then his dad looked down at the carpet for a dramatic pause, then looked up again and continued: “Son, you saw the movie ‘Passion of the Christ’ didn’t you? Well . . . you don’t want that to happen to you, do you, Son?” David never did take me for that ride in his dad’s Beamer that day, but, I digress. Let’s get back on track with dad’s other side, mom, and her endless schooling in motherhood.

All moms, everywhere, learn these same basic warning phrases: 1. “I’m gonna give you until the count of three!” 2. “If you don’t clean your room, all this stuff is going into the trash!” 3. “Do that one more time and I’m turning this car around!”
I don’t know about you, but, I’m plumb-fascinated with moms. I once overheard my mom’s secret conversation over the phone with another mom and I got an earful. I heard my mom say: “My kids wanted to know what it’s like to be a mom, so, I woke them up at 2 a.m. to tell them my sock came off.”
Moms are aware that there are certain steps or stages of “The Principles of Motherhood.” Basically, what this means is that, in time, mom’s maternity clothes eventually become her regular clothes. And also, that science has proven that husbands live 10 to 20 years longer if they don’t notice or say anything about this. Preparing for childbirth always happens in 3 basic stages for mothers:
1st Baby: You practice your Lamaze breathing exercises religiously in preparation for labor. 2nd Baby: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time breathing didn’t do a damned thing! 3rd Baby: You ask for an epidural in your 7th month. The doctor does not refuse your request because he quickly evaluates your body language: you are holding a loaded gun in your hand! Trust me on this, we can never do enough for dear ol’ mom. After all, moms don’t just bring us into this world, they do a helluva lot more once we get here. For instance, I once saw an inscription that read: “Happy Mother’s Day to someone who carried me for 9 months physically, and 29 years financially.” That says it all.
In zillions of ways, moms are simply amazing. Have you ever noticed how mothers will do anything for us? And how much we truly feel loved and accepted by them? Even as a tiny boy of only 5 years of age, I knew how much moms will even sacrifice for us. We weren’t poor, but we were also far from being rich. My mom was magic. When we would have pie together and there was only one piece left, she’d smile sweetly at me, hug me gently, and then say, “Go on, Honey – that’s your piece. I already ate mine.” I never saw but one piece of pie, but I believed my mom that there must have been another slice that she ate when I just wasn’t looking. At night when I curled up safely
with my mama with sleepy eyes, I would sometimes hear her stomach growling. But, at the time, I never knew what hunger pains were. Thanks to my magician-mom, who could eat a slice of pie without me seeing her, my stomach never felt empty to make that same sound that her stomach sometimes made at night. My two older brothers loved playing outside and never spent as much time as I did with mom. Didn’t matter; mom always loved us all the same, regardless. My sister, Debbie, came much later and like me, she was also in awe of mom’s wisdom and boundless affection which she showered on us all.
Mom never ceased to amaze me. She just seemed to know everything! She was the smartest person I ever knew. Even to this day, her wisdom has helped guide me through the darkness, and the pain, and the fear which comes with being left alone, without her, to hold my little hand, or pick me up and squeeze me and make me laugh out loud with her, as she once did. It’s hard for me to understand that I will never, again, be allowed to hug and tell my mom how much I love her – ever again. She was truly my best friend, as well as being my mom.
To put it in a nutshell, mom’s wisdom and discipline prepared me for life. You see, life doesn’t come with a manual -- it comes with a mom. All of us have or had moms. And all of us truly understand how much they all mean to us.
It’s truly amazing how our worlds revolve around our moms. Just think of it. Mom and motherhood are words that instantly pop up visions of happiness, holidays, family picnics, bright sunshine, and feelings of love and unconditional acceptance.
Sometimes when you think you don’t have a friend in the whole wide world, or that you just hate yourself and slam your bedroom door in an expression of ultimate frustration, your mom knows just when to talk, and just how to say the right words that have more power, more medicine, more healing than any super hero you’ve ever grown to admire. At various moments I can both laugh out loud, or suddenly become quiet and hang my head in knowing that I truly miss my mom and will never again hug her and look into her angel-like eyes and see myself reflected in them and realizing that no one could ever possibly love more than a mother loving her small child. Memories can be bittersweet.

Attention Ford Lovers, but maybe not for long. Ford has plans to discontinue a number of its car lines in the next few years and concentrate on trucks. This means that 90% of their production will be trucks. Consider yourself warned.
When I was a young boy my father, who was in the car business, drove home a very small car that he took the liberty to drive the last half block approaching our house on the sidewalk, much to the chagrin of a couple of neighbors. What an impression that left on me and my pals who witnessed in disbelief. This car was an American Bantam. This week’s mystery car is an English version of such a car. The English “Sir” who was responsible for launching this small car in 1922, did so to wrest sales from the light cycle cars and sidecarequipped motorcycles that the British loved so much at that time. They joined forces with the producer of motorcycle sidecars. The result was a very cute little British car. It had room for two adults and two children, four wheel brakes (with separate front and rear wheel activators) and a single transverse spring in the front and quarter-eliptics in the rear suspension. The “L” head 4-cylinder engine was 696cc, but enlarged to 747 cc after the first 100 cars were produced. Notice the little smoker’s vent in the roof …quite ahead of its time, don’t you think. Better roads without higher taxes
Even before the recent increase, Californians were paying some of the highest gasoline taxes in the United States. Despite this, our highways were consistently rated among the nation’s worst, and we were told a drastic tax increase would be necessary to fix the problem. But is that really true? Well no, it’s not. Alternatives that would generate billions for transportation without raising taxes are on the table. If we can ensure that fees and taxes paid by transportation system users are actually dedicated to fixing our roads, we can devote major funding to relieving traffic congestion without increasing taxes.
So where would the money come from? To start, transportation funding would be streamlined by removing regulatory red tape that increases costs by slowing street repairs. Accountability would be improved by expanding audits for major transportation projects to make sure we’re getting maximum bang for our transportation tax bucks. Revenue sources would include billions from motor vehicle sales and use taxes, existing vehicle insurance taxes, and from the return of truck weight fees, miscellaneous

transportation revenues, Caltrans efficiencies, and more.
All funds would be distributed directly to transportation projects, including billions for local streets and roads, for new highway capacity and traffic relief projects, as well as for maintenance and other needs.
Passage of SB 1 last year increased vehicle registration fees and fuel taxes by 12/20 cents per gallon for gasoline and diesel, with most “highway lane-capacity-increasing projects” strictly prohibited. Much of that funding is earmarked for non-highway projects including parks and apprenticeships, with no guarantee that any of the money must be spent on roads.
As always, I support cost-effective proposals to maintain and improve state highways, without adding to the excessive tax burden on California’s long-suffering drivers. permeate the universe, like stardust. Ships are referred to in the feminine pronoun such as ‘she’ or ‘her.’ When I was away from mom on the high seas, serving my country, all military personnel referred to all our warships in such a manner: “She’s going out for sea-trials next week,” or “Her top speed is 40 knots in battle alert.” Even our war birds (military planes to you civilians), are collectively referenced as ‘she’ or ‘her.’ And our own Native Americans refer to this spinning blue planet which nurtures, feeds and raises us, as simply, “Our Mother Earth.” My mom bore the rich Irish name of Molly. She always told me she loved her name that her mama gave her. The doctors said my mom’s heart stopped beating because it was flawed. I still find that hard to believe. How could such a perfect heart made out of solid gold, ever be flawed? To me, mom had the purest heart fashioned out of 24carat gold bullion. She had the heart of a saint.
Mom always taught me things that sometimes made me question the world around me. For example, a psychiatrist on television once said that the notion of “Love at first sight” was just an illusion; a fanciful notion found only in unrealistic soap operas and syrupy love songs.
Recently, at Cruisin’ Grand, here in Escondido, I ventured into a corner store and in the rear of the store I saw a plaque sitting on the floor. It had various quotes of mothers to their children. I found one sentence that seemed to jump out at me. It said something I needed to hear. It read: “May you always know how deeply you are loved, how your life shines brightly. And how your heart is never alone. May our spirits be connected always.”
Mom, if you’re reading this, somehow, somewhere, please know how much I still love you. And how much I still miss you. And Mom, I only hope I’ve made you proud of me.
A little girl was once asked where her home was. And she answered: “Where my mom is.” No philosopher, no poet, no sage in all of history can improve on that little girl’s answer. Happy Mother’s Day to you, Mom, if you’re reading this.
And to all the moms out there reading this, this article is dedicated to you. I send you all my love, along with bushels of hugs. Happy Mother’s Day and may God richly bless you!

What troubles me is that mom always taught me the wisest things in life, and yet, I found a serious flaw in her reasoning. Sometimes, when I’m walking all by myself on a sunny day on Grand Avenue here in Escondido or in San Diego, on Armstrong Street where I finished elementary school, I’ll revisit our modest house which still stands. I’ll walk the familiar streets, remembering things from the past and, sometimes, I’ll smile slightly and look upward to the endless sky and whisper: “Mom, you were wrong. I still miss you. And I still need you in my life.”
8 Presidents to Study
There are eight Presidents of the 20th century whom students of history should study to understand what made America the dominant global nation. Today’s young people, for the most part, pay little attention to history and take for granted America’s position in the world. It was no accident how we got here.
While today’s President Donald Trump is an easy target for his bombastic style, his isn’t that much different than Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, the turnof-the 20th century president who found himself in the Oval Office due to the assassination of President William McKinley. Roosevelt, a Republican, believed in a strong Navy. He had the Navy’s “Great White Fleet” circle the globe to demonstrate the nation’s growing power. T.R. believed in his so-called “Big Stick” policy – “Walk softly but carry a big stick.”

However, probably one of the best presidents during the century arguably was Harry S. Truman. Known among detractors as “His Accidency,” Truman ascended to the presidency like T.R. Roosevelt. He was FDR’s vice president and when Roosevelt died a few weeks into his fourth term. Truman, who was the only high school graduate of the century to become president, moved into the Oval office.
Teddy oversaw the building of the Panama Canal, opening the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, cutting in half the time needed to go from ocean to ocean without traveling around South America.

Franklin D. Roosevelt has been called America’s greatest president. He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s into five years of World War II. Dozens of books have been written on FDR, making his presidency the pivotal time of the century.
It was as if my mom was in the store that day. As if she were speaking to me, again.
Yet, when my mom clutched me tightly she would often say to me: “When you were born, and the nurse first placed you into my arms, believe me, it was love at first sight.” As a small child I would always tell her, “Mommy, you are the smartest person in the universe.” And she would answer me, “Honey, you’re gonna grow up someday, and things will change and you won’t always think of me this way. You’ll have your own life, and you won’t need me anymore.”

Roosevelt was placed in the vice presidency by the Republicans to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been such a thorn to old-guard politicians they wanted to put him where he couldn’t do any harm. It backfired. Once in the presidency, T.R. created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms, (sound familiar?) Among other monikers, he became known as the “Trust Buster.”
Admittedly, Woodrow Wilson was a significant president, primarily for his leadership in World War I and being the architect of the League of Nations, forerunner of the United Nations. But, Wilson’s impact on U.S. history pales in comparison to other 20th century chief executives. Still, he deserves a perusal in order to understand how the nation pulled itself into ‘20s and ‘30s isolationism.
Herbert Hoover is best remembered for supposedly being an ineffective, even a bad president. He was a complicated character, yet an important historical figure. Some 15 years after leaving office, he was asked by President Harry Truman to organize the feeding of millions of Europeans after World War II. FDR never confided in Truman about the atomic bomb. He was told about the $2 billion World War II project after assuming office. He had to make the decision to drop the two bombs on Japan, known as “Fat Man” and “Little Boy.” It was his most momentous, (and one of the century’s most important) decision. An estimated half-million U.S. troops and as many as 1.5 million Japanese were saved from death that would have occurred in assaulting the mainline of Japan. With Truman, the so-called “Cold War” began and lasted for more than 40 years until Ronald Reagan built up American armed forces to the point it caused the Soviet Union to go broke trying to keep up.
Reagan was one of the nation’s most charismatic chief executives. Staunchly anti-Communist, Reagan dedicated himself to defeating the Soviet Union in order to end the Cold War that had existed since the end of World War II. Among his many accomplishments, causing the collapse of the Soviet Union. The world took a deep breath as the two super powers backed away from a nuclear war. For those of you who have children or grandchildren who are bored with or lacking in history, you might suggest they read this column. It might help.

Version 1803, AKA “build 17133” to Microsoft insiders, is the fifth brand new OS (operating System) Microsoft has installed since introducing Windows 10 on July 29, 2015. If you started with the original version of Win 10, Microsoft has completely uninstalled your OS and reinstalled a brand new OS at least four times. Microsoft planned to “roll out” (begin mandatory installation) of its latest OS, (version 1803) in early April but they found more than the “acceptable” level of bugginess. Each time Microsoft force feeds a new OS to its Win10 user base, business picks up here at the Computer Factory. Previous versions were 1709 (Redstone 3) in October 2017, 1703 (Redstone2) in April 2017 and 1607 (Redstone 1) in August of 2016, While Microsoft does try to keep update problems to a minimum, each new version crashes millions of Win 10 PCs. Typically a repair involves reinstalling the new version from scratch including all drivers and updates. Depending on whether or not files must be saved, this will cost the Win 10 user between $105 and $150 in our shop.

for the Car Show – The Valley Center/Pauma Music Boosters announce their 7th annual free MusicFest and Car Show in Valley Center from 3pm-8pm on Saturday, June 2nd at Bates Nut Farm. Signs up are now being taken for the all-model car show. This year’s all-model car show returns as a fun addition to the MusicFest event that features food, fun family activities and the live music of Detroit Underground. This free event also features the award-winning school jazz bands/choirs, drumlins and winter guard, along with food, raffles and silent auction. This year’s event will also feature overnight camping at Bates for just $20. Car enthusiasts are encouraged to sign up and bring their cars to this event which is aimed at raising money for the local music programs in the Valley Center and Pauma schools. Anyone who wants to show off your special car at this event is invited and welcomed. The MusicFest car show will be judged in four categories of Best in Show, Best Work in Progress, People’s Choice and Best Club Participation. Entry cost of $25 goes straight into supporting the hundreds of students in the music programs. The music boosters will be serving their famous hamburgers, hot dogs and burritos. The kid zone will feature bouncy slides, face painting with the Valley Center pageant court, henna tattoos and hair feathers with the VCHS Winter Guard, popcorn, snow cones and cotton candy. There will be a wide variety of raffle baskets and silent auction items and the Boosters are in need of and appreciate items to be donated from local businesses in support of this event. This is the Booster’s largest fundraiser for the music program, which encompasses about 800 students throughout Valley Center Pauma School District.
