Ever wonder just how amazing our world is? Not the physical world, as such, but its inhabitants? The people that comprise and make our world what it is today is a most fascinating study and, certainly, helps define not just who we are as a collective species but, fundamentally, what we are. Carl Sagan said we are made out of “the same stuff as stars.” When Sagan first said those words back in 1980, they both shocked and ignited the imagination of the world: “The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made of the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.” Celebrated American scientist, Neil deGrasse Tyson (who, incidentally, has read past issues of The Paper), added to Sagan’s remark: “We are, each of us, a little universe.”
However we perceive ourselves, there is no doubt that we are both a strange and fascinating species of life-form. It is as children – not adults – that we are at our most creative level, along with possessing unbounded imagination. Children create endless games, songs, poems and imaginary worlds in which to play. They are the undisputed masters of makebelieve. They can transform the simplest of things into inventive fun. As one social scientist phrased it, “Children don’t just walk to school – they often skip, dance, or sing their way there.”
The mind of a child is forever inquisitive, forever asking questions about our surrounding world. When they crawl upon Grandpa’s lap they may well ask: “Grandpa, how does it rain?” or “Where do rainbows get their colors?” “Why do butterflies fly crooked?” or even, “Grandpa, how does my goldfish breathe under water?” Sitting on our laps, we look lovingly into these innocent and inquisitive little faces and silently ask ourselves a far more painful and soul-searching question: “Why do we adults become so jaded to the miracles which surround us? Why did we lose one of childhood’s most precious and valuable possession: our sense of wonder?”
Let’s rediscover that childhood fascination by looking at the world around us, and have a closer, intimate look at our fellow Earthlings, our international neighbors, which populate this Blue Marble of ours. WHICH COUNTRY OR REGION HAS PEOPLE WITH THE HIGHEST I. Q.?
Children are not afraid to ask the tough questions, so let’s ask this one. It can be a touchy subject and, certainly, a most controversial one, but, as one noted philosopher wrote, “Once fear shackles the human mind from asking certain questions, it is our first step away from intellectual freedom and one huge step towards intellectual enslavement.”

First off, ranking different countries by average I. Q. is, arguably, not an exact science and therefore such I. Q. findings provide only a ‘rough indication’ and not precise truth. These I. Q. sources, themselves, often give the following cautionary disclaimer: “These I. Q. scores are only ‘indicative’ and should not be considered infallible findings. It is not advised that these statistics be interpreted as either absolutely scientific or academic.”
However, according to repeated studies (flawed as they may be), “D” above, Singapore, appears to be a consistently high-scorer in international I. Q. tests. Despite any controversy, it is compelling that the recurring top countries, or regions, with highest average I. Q. scores are of Asian influence. The top four countries cited here, with highest I. Q. scores are, in transmission order: Singapore (sometimes tied in first-place with Hong Kong) with 108

average I. Q., followed by South Korea (106), then Japan (105).
Once again, measuring I. Q. levels from different countries, or regions, is not absolute science and therefore may have various flaws. Nevertheless, this ongoing study of comparative I. Q. levels between different countries remains a most vigorous forum of research and debate which leaves the door wide open to welcome any discussion and perceived discrepancies.
Despite human error and other offsetting variables, it still remains a powerful and compelling fact that Asian countries, or regions, are consistently high in regards to education, learning, and overall academic achievements, all of which point to high I. Q. levels. What have we learned from such repeated studies? And what could be the cause behind (perceived) high-and-low I. Q. levels?
In a 2016 survey of 71 experts in intelligence, “Genes were rated as the most important cause of perceived high I. Q. (17%), followed by educational quality (11.44%), health (10.99%), and education ‘quantity’ (10.20%).”

This may shock you so, perhaps, you should be sitting down. A. Japan B. Switzerland C. Singapore D. Australia First off, the United States ranked No. 31 for those of you who are (dying) to know! The big surprise is that the countries/regions with citizens that have the longest life expectancy are listed in exact transmission order above! So, if you selected “A” above, Japan, you are correct.
According to the World Health Organization (2015 data published in May 2016), the people in Japan have a life expectancy of 83.7 years. Next, Switzerland (average 83.4 years), Singapore (83.1 years), and Australia (82.8 years). For those of you who crave details, the United States’ average life expectancy is 79.3 years. This is worthy science because these

longevity figures reflect the quality of healthcare in every country studied, along with other factors including ongoing wars, obesity, and HIV infections.
Worldwide, the average life expectancy is 73.0 years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Interesting science is that women – in every country or region – live longer than men (on average). The only exception to this rule is the small Polynesian island-kingdom of Tonga, in the South Pacific. The disparity in length of Earthly years between genders (males and females) is also a focus of global study. The answer may be a key in genetic banks and a breakthrough to better serve humanity, along with improving health conditions for all. WHICH COUNTRY HAS THE TALLEST PEOPLE?
Recent worldwide studies reveal that this is a most worthwhile question to ask for a variety of genetic and health-related reasons. Yet, children have long-asked this question before blossoming into adulthood. The adults, ironically, are desperately trying to catch up with the inquisitive mind of past childhood in today’s science!
The World Health Organization has been studying the growth of children from birth to the age of 6 from most every country with intensified interest. Why do some countries produce a lot taller people than others? And why is this important to science? Before we answer these questions, take a look at the countries listed below and ask yourself,

The amazing thing about this global study is that it was conducted by different sources from different countries and the answers all came out the same! That, alone, is truly amazing!
If you picked “D” above, Holland (officially known as the Netherlands), well, you need a hearty pat on the back – because you’re right! The Netherlands is the country which has the tallest men in the world – the average height of men in the Netherlands is an unbelievable six feet (remember, this is ‘average,’ so keep that in mind). For the record, the country of Latvia has the tallest women where the average female height is 5’ 7” -- which narrowly edges out the Netherlands in this regard. That the Netherlands has the tallest men (and among the tallest women) has become most apparent when the Dutch government recently redesigned changes to their building regulations to increase the height of doorways, etc.
By the way, it used to be (when records began back in 1914) that Sweden had both the tallest men and women on the planet, but, no longer.

And for American women, today, they now occupy an even lower 42nd spot in world-height comparisons. For the United States, we are a far cry from being – even remotely -- among the tallest people in the world . . . a spot we once “owned.” Why is all this research important to all these scientists from around the world? It seems that comparative height (or lack thereof) has a crucial correlation strongly linked to health, environment, genetics, and so on. Scientists from around the world are networking in a ‘super vast’ project monitoring over 18.6-million people from over 200 countries to better understand how to improve health, nutrition, and to eradicate diseases. And height plays into this picture. “In these countries, the stagnation or decreases in height could be due to a mix of the wealthy people already receiving the maximum amount of nourishment and health care, and lower-class people getting subpar nutrition, especially during pregnancy,” says James Bentham, a research scientist from London’s Imperial College.
What most people may think is unimportant (e.g. why people are taller in some countries) is, in fact, often a lifesaving investigation for millions of people. “The average height of people can serve as a proxy for how healthy their nation is,” the researchers all agreed. This is exciting science!
“Tall people are also less likely to experience heart disease and stroke, and taller women and their children are less likely to have complications before and after childbirth,” a global network of research scientists recently reported in Live Science.

Just think, little children have been asking such questions as, “Why are some people taller than others?” long before science and researchers started to ask themselves this same critical query. Adults must reclaim this childlike sense of wonder and stop taking this amazing world around us for granted. The tallest man in history, with irrevocable proof, was Robert Pershing Wadlow (1918–1940) who grew to an unbelievable height of almost 9-feet! But, why did this happen? And why is this important? baby! As a mere 5-year-old child in kindergarten, he wore clothes fit for a 17-year-old teenager! Three years later, Wadlow stood at an astounding height of 6’ 2” with a weight of almost 200 pounds – at only 8 years of age! At age 10 he tipped the scales at 210 lbs. and wore a shoe-size of 17 ½.
Finally, when this native of Illinois reached the age of 19, he would make world news and shatter a historic record. At age 19, the teenager’s height had already reached an unbelievable 8’ 7” tall, at which time he was officially proclaimed the “Tallest Man in the World.” He now wore a staggering shoe size of 37 and each pair would cost $100. That may not seem like very much money today but, back in 1937, $100 was equal to $1,724.51 today for a pair of shoes in 2017! But, he wasn’t done yet. He just kept growing!
Robert Wadlow would eventually reach a gigantic height of 8’ 11” (one inch short of being 9-feet) before death finally claimed him. Doctors and specialists concluded that had death not intervened, well, he would have just kept right-on growing!
Despite all the gawking and staring he endured throughout his life, Robert Wadlow became known as “The Gentle Giant” because of his kind and understanding personality. Once, in a radio interview, he was asked if the constant staring annoyed him. Wadlow calmly replied with a sense of humor: “No, I just overlook them.” The Gentle Giant finally passed away in

Wadlow’s massive size necessitated a 1,000-lb casket which, in turn, required 18 pallbearers to carry it. Robert Wadlow’s family made certain all of his personal belongings were destroyed to prevent them from falling into the hands of anyone who might wish to parade them in ‘freak’ exhibits or circus-like museums. To make sure this would not happen, Wadlow’s parents buried their son’s body under a vault of concrete to prevent any sort of graverobbing. How tall Wadlow would have continued to grow is unknown. As previously stated, he was still growing at the time of his death at the young age of 22. But, why did he grow so large? And why is this of any worldly importance?
All human beings have what is called a “pituitary” gland inside of them which determines how big or how tall you will be during your lifetime. This pituitary gland is so important that it has been nicknamed “The Master Gland.” Wadlow’s worldwide celebrity helped spotlight the need for further study into human growth and this intensified study resulted in focusing research on the pituitary gland in particular.

Science has proven that as children, we are vastly more inquisitive, imaginative, and actually learn at a faster rate than at any other time in our adult life. Language, reasoning, logic, perception and brain development all basically develop within the first six years of human life. Even at this young age, the world’s foremost computer experts say, “Even at this early stage of brain development within children, their brain is still 30 times more powerful than the best supercomputers!”
Recently, in Japan, clever researchers found that: “By six years of age, a child’s brain already has more ‘switches’ than all the computers and routers and internet connections on Earth!”
Somewhere, down through the years, adults begin to be less imaginative, and less curious about the world they live in. Caterpillars which miraculously transform into brilliantly-colored butterflies, rainbows, and birds which fly south for the winter without compass or global navigaton systems – all cease being jawdropping miracles.
We, as an adult species, no longer see this amazng world of ours through the eyes of a child.
One of the greatest gifts that children have which the greatest scientists today chase after to rediscover is this: Children dare to believe that all things are possible. This is quintessential for science to relearn because, without exception, all of the greatest discoveries, inventions, and revelations in human thinking were all first thought to have been utterly impossible.
Famous British science writer and inventor, Arthur C. Clarke (1919-2008), once said: “If anyone states that something is impossible, they are very probably wrong.” Clarke was keenly aware of how crucial it is for our human species to recapture the thinking process of how children boldly believe. He was fond of saying, “The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.” As children, we lived that philosophy.
Yes, it is true that we are more knowledgeable than children; but they are more magical. They are vastly more imaginative. “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” Albert Einstein wisely noted. And he repeated that scientific mantra throughout his Earthly years.
If you have children or grandchildren, cherish their inquistive minds and take delight in their childlike questions which they may ask of you: “Mommy, where did I come from?” Yes, cherish those years of early imagination where magic seems sprinkled all about them, like faerie dust. Don’t step on their dreams or turn a deaf ear to

The Paper • Page 4 • May 04, 2017 Child Molestation Suspects Arrested Update –– Additional Unidentified or Unaware Families Sought
Investigation into the child molestation case involving 22-year-old Brittney Lyon has led detectives to believe there are additional unidentified or unaware victims.
The City of Carlsbad Police Department is asking for the media and community’s help to find additional families that have used Lyon’s babysitting services. The victims could be in regions outside San Diego including San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles.
On July 5, 2016, investigators arrested Lyon on suspicion of eight counts of lewd and lascivious acts on children she was babysitting. Families who have used the babysitting websites www.care.com, www.sitter.com or www.sittercity.com are asked to look at the included photos to see if they
hired Lyon as a sitter.
During the evening of July 5, the City of Carlsbad Police Department received notification from the Oceanside Police Department that they had been made aware of child molestation that had reportedly occurred in the City of Carlsbad. Carlsbad investigators took over the case and worked throughout the night to identify and arrest two suspects thought responsible for the crimes. The investigation included multiple search warrants within the 24 hour period and resulted in the collection of evidence. During the investigation, detectives learned that one of the suspects, 22year-old Brittney Lyon of Escondido, took children that she was babysitting to a home in the 6300 block of Greenhaven Drive that was occupied by her boyfriend, 22-year-old Samuel Cabrera Jr. At the residence, Cabrera reportedly engaged in sexual molestation of the children while Lyon filmed the acts. Investigators arrested Lyon and Cabrera for multiple felony counts that included conspiracy and lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under the age of fourteen. Both were booked into the Vista Detention Facility where Lyon’s bail was set at $100,000 and Cabrera’s bail was set at $2.3 million.

Among others that were there to welcome us was dear friend, Alan Skuba, the owner of radio station KOWN which I managed. Alan was on the Escondido City Council, later becoming Mayor. He is still active in business life, heading up membership at Big Horn, a prestigious (and very expensive) private golf club and residential area in Palm Desert. I rode all the way from San Diego to Kit Carson Park (about 40 miles). It was a hot summer day and I wound up the day by doing one of the dumbest things I've ever done.

This was a ride I organized with the Escondido Chamber of Commerce that provided horses and tack (thanks to the (then) Miramar Naval Station Special Services and their stable; we arranged for dignitaries to ride different legs from Old Town in San Diego (the original destination of Kit Carson following the battle of Mule Hill) all the way
I got home . . . thoroughly bushed, hot and tired . . . and I jumped into my swimming pool. The cool (cold) water hitting my overheated body damn near killed me. If I were to pull that same stunt today it likely would kill me.
In spite of the dumb jump into the pool . . . the overall event was one of my greatest memories. (And most tiring). Those were the days!

On April 28 at 2:58 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the 2500 block of El Camino Real regarding an injured adult male. The caller reported that he found a subject near a vehicle in the parking lot who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The caller also indicated that the male had a handgun in his hand. Officers responded to the 2500 block of El Camino Real where they located a male lying next to a vehicle who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The Carlsbad Fire Department arrived on scene and determined that the male had succumbed to the injury.
Carlsbad Police Department Detectives and Medical Examiner’s from the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the death. San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will be notifying the next of kin. The investigation into the death of the male is ongoing. Arrest Made in Homicide

It is the club’s annual major fundraiser, operated by its Foundation. Last year they netted $13,200; this year they expect the net to be closer to $20,000+. There used to be this young kid who came up fishing at Dixon Lake when I owned “Lyle’s at Dixon Lake,” the concession that handled fishing permits, boats, bait and tackle and food. Cute kid. Polite, well mannered. And a pretty good fisherman.
Well that kid, Jed Dickerson, went and grew up on me. He’s one of the area’s top fishermen and, sure enough, he won the Grand Prize on Saturday, with a 8.1 lb rainbow. Jed has a son who is almost a mirror image of himself when he was that age . . . and he’s chasing dad for fishing honors. They’re both superb fishermen. Witnesses stated they discovered the possible murder of their friend via the social media app “Snapchat” and indicated the suspect was an acquaintance named Salvador Sanchez, a 19-year-old Escondido resident. After a thorough investigation by EPD, it was learned that on Thursday, April 27, in the evening hours, Sanchez had a disagreement with the victim while drinking in an undisclosed area of Escondido. A fight ensued, and Sanchez killed the victim. Sanchez then drove the victim’s body to the 49100 block of E. Paradise Creek Lane in Valley Center where he dumped the victim’s body and buried it in tall grass.
The victim’s body was located on Sunday, April 30, by EPD detectives. The San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department Forensic Team and personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and collected the victim’s remains. An autopsy is pending for Tuesday, May 2, and the victim will remain unnamed until the Medical Examiner can make a positive identification and notify next of kin. Sanchez was arrested Sunday, April 30, at about 2:50pm, on Ash St / Grand Ave in Escondido and booked into the Vista Jail for PC 187(a) – Murder.

1055 anglers hit the lake with dreamy perfect weather. Lots of smiles and a lot of the 4500 lbs of trout were caught by happy fishermen.
As usual, the Kiddy Pond was very popular with the little ones; kids under 8 got to fish free with the aid of the Escondido Senior Anglers who provided bait, tackle, and advice as to how to catch the wily Blue Gill. 350 lbs of Blue Gill had been planted in the Kiddy Pond, a roughly 10’ x 20” enclosure into which the fish had been placed. Over 100 little tykes caught fish on Saturday . . . then either Cormorants or Pelicans (or poachers) hit the kiddy pond overnight and there were only about 8-10 Bluegill left on Sunday morning. This killed the Kiddy Pond fishing for Sunday. Next year, netting or some other device will be employed to protect the fish so the little rascals will have two days of fishing. Many other prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as well as Opportunity Prizes.

Soroptimist Club Awards $26,500 to Six Local Women - Six local women were honored at Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland’s annual Soroptimist Women’s Award Gala (SWAG) held recently at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista. About 80 guests, including Vista Mayor Judy Ritter, attended. It had a Hollywood theme and several celebrity looka-likes in attendance, a ballroom dance demonstration, Academy Awards-related trivia quiz for prizes, a $250 “Money Bouquet” raffle, and a Dessert Dash with tables bidding on the right to pick first from an array of desserts made or donated by members. The featured event was the presentation of the Club’s annual “Live Your Dream” Award to three single mothers who are all attending local colleges. As presenter Aleta Dirdo explained, the Live Your Dream award assists women who have overcome great obstacles and are the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve
their education and employment prospects. Each of the three awardees received a $5,000 check and award certificate as well as a proclamation from Vista Mayor Judy Ritter. “Eleyna Smith” (she asked that her real name not be published) of Escondido is the single mom of a 9-year-old son. “Eleyna” grew up in a broken, dysfunctional home, abusive mother, absent father; she suffered emotional/physical abuse from her mom; was physically abused and molested by an older brother. All of this she kept secret. Becoming pregnant at age 15 increased her mother’s rage, and she was kicked out of the house. More issues with her son’s father makes their relationship even worse, and as a result, her son is struggling with depression and anger, for which he is seeing a therapist. He is her life so everything she does is for him. She completed high school and received her diploma, and currently attends Palomar College while working part-time, and plans to transfer in two years to UCSD to complete her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her goal is to continue through Medical School to become a Psychiatrist, to help people suffering from similar types of abuse.
Blanca Gonzalez of San Marcos is a single mom of 5-year-old Priscilla. Blanca is attending Cal State San Marcos, maintaining a high GPA (3.3 overall; 3.9 in her major) in pursuit of her B.A. in Environmental Studies, a subject she is passionate about. She is working on a Geographical Information Systems research project to help with the city’s climate action plan. Pregnant at age 16 resulted in challenges for Blanca; she has had to support herself and her daughter and endure years of unstable housing situations, moving frequently. Money is a constant problem, and she worries about the effect on young Priscilla. I was fortunate enough to receive a paid internship while having three other paying jobs last semester. Alisha Donaldson of Vista is a single mom of a 6-year-old son. Raised by a single parent father until age 11, Alisha had a rough time when her father remarried and she was kicked out of the house while a freshman in college. She dropped out of college and had to fend for herself, working two jobs. She became pregnant, and after giving birth became very ill. Diagnosed as having ulceritive colitis, then later Crohn’s Disease, she eventually underwent a total proctocolectomy with ileostomy surgery. After recovering from that drastic and life-changing surgery, she managed to return to work and to college. “I recently graduated from Cuyamaca College in June 2015 with 4 Associate Degrees, and was accepted into Cal State San Marcos,” Alisha said. She is pursuing a BS degree in Social Sciences with emphasis in Communication, and secondary studies in Sociology and Psychology. “I remain a single mother, with full custody of my son. I work three jobs,” she said. She has created a Facebook awareness/support page to keep in contact with other people with chronic illnesses who live with an ileostomy. She is also organizing The Single Parent Network
Awareness of Genetic Testing Saves Lives
Getting a diagnosis of cancer can be scary and uncertain. As a member of the Assembly Health Committee, I am seeking ways to improve access to new and innovative treatments, cures and therapies to prevent diseases and save lives. This session I introduced Assembly Bill 1386, establishing a women’s health pilot program to raise awareness of genetic testing for the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes, in newly diagnosed patients, many of whom are not given the information. Breast and ovarian cancer are among the leading causes of cancer deaths for women in the United States. If a genetic test is appropriate, the results can clarify the type of treatment needed so that the patient has a better chance of a successful outcome. BRCA genes, which pass from parent to child, help a cell’s genetic material to function properly. However, mutations in BRCA genes can occur, which severely on campus, partnering with other on-campus organizations recently to host a Student Parent Mixer to get more parents networking. “I do my best to stay positive, think positive, and encourage and support others around me,” Alisha said. “My goals in life are to show those who have gone through hardships and struggles, that although times can be very hard, you can still do anything you set your mind to.” The Club’s Foundation, a separate entity established as a testamentary trust when long-time Soroptimist Lucille Strachan passed away in 1983, then awarded $5,000 each to graduate nursing students Nicole Galicia and Michelle Glathe, and a $1,500 grant to Rachelle Schull, for graduate work in Special Education. Women at high risk for having a BRCA mutation or who are newly diagnosed, often don’t get genetic testing or the chance to speak with a genetic counselor to help them weigh the necessity of a test. Women in underserved communities are even less likely to get genetic counseling and testing. According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 80.9 percent of high-risk patients wanted testing, but only 39.6 percent received counseling and only 50.9 percent of these have actually had a genetic test. AB 1386 will promote genetic testing through public awareness aimed at newly diagnosed women in underserved communities, including those on Medi-Cal or who have limited access to health insurance. DIY Off Grid Living in Ocean View, Hawaii by Emily Farhoodi
“In Ocean View, there’s no social structure; you can have a mansion right next to a shack,” says Erik Wilcox.
We are sitting in the living room of his off grid home in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE). Also present are his wife Justine Hanchar and their Yorky terrier, Roxy, who gnaws menacingly on a human foot (it’s rubber, ok?) Their place holds it’s own somewhere in the middle of Ocean View’s unofficial mansion to shack scale.
All Photos by Ronit Fahl Some 45 miles south of touristy Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, Ocean View is kind of like the “wild west” of West Hawaii. It has a reputation for anti-social eccentrics, un-permitted off grid dwellings and cheap land. Dating back to the 1950’s, Ocean View is home to the biggest subdivision in the Hawaiian Islands and in the entire U.S. with 11,000 one acre parcels of land, over 200 miles of paved roads and with a total area of 106.5 square miles (276 sq. km). According to the census, only a few thousand people live here.
Ocean View sits on the side of active shield volcano, Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world in terms of mass. The US Geological Survey classifies Ocean View in lava flow hazard zone 2, on a scale of 1–10 where 1 represents the most risk. A few blocks over from Erik and Justine’s place, you can see the path of Mauna Loa’s 1907 lava flow, one of many documented in the last 200 years since eruptions have officially been recorded. Covered in old growth Ohia trees, the couple’s property sits on a much older lava flow which they estimate is at least 500 years old given the maturity of the trees.
Originally from the Bay Area, Erik purchased the 1.03 acre parcel of land in 2008 using owner financing for 40k. The land came with a small, windowless shack, which he lived in for a year while building the first portion of what is now the main house. You can read about his experience in his self published book, A Path to Paradise. Justine met Erik after moving to the Big Island from Chicago. The two quickly hit it off and Justine moved in. Membership is the life blood of any charitable organization, and she made it her personal goal to raise membership by 20% during her tenure, and worked diligently to achieve this goal. Nonmembers become aware of multifaceted functions of the club and how they interact with the community. Arlene followed up with the event chairs to ensure each nonmember attendee was contacted and questions about the club were answered. The reward of Arlene’s efforts culminated in BWC membership increasing from 100 to 122. These two ladies represent what BWC is all about. Congratulations to them both; Well Done! Well Deserved! EAA 2017 Kids Kaleidoscope Winners Announced Escondido Art Association members, parents and students gathered together at the Awards Ceremony and Reception held on Saturday, April 8th, to honor the Kids Kaleidoscope art students at the Artists Gallery on Grand Avenue in Escondido. The Kids Kaleidoscope competition is sponsored by the EAA and a generous donation from Bjarne and Suzanne Nicolaisen and salutes young artists ages 5 through 18 who compete for cash prizes and ribbons in three age categories: elementary school; middle school; and high school. A total of 46 students took part in the competition. The Literary Rebel With Many Causes
“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”– Dorothy Parker upon writing a book review. Dorothy Parker was an American poet, short-story writer, critic, and satirist, best known for her wit, wisecracks and eye for 20th-century urban foibles.
She was born Dorothy Rothschild Aug. 22, 1893, in Long Branch, N.J. Parker rose to acclaim, both for her literary output in publications such as The New Yorker and as a founding member of the famed Algonquin Round Table of noted writers and humorists.
Dismissive of her own talents, she deplored her reputation as a "wisecracker." Nevertheless, her literary output and reputation for sharp wit have endured. Parker once joked that she was asked to leave a Catholic high school following her characterization of the Immaculate Conception as "spontaneous combustion." She sold her first poem to Vanity Fair magazine in 1914 and some months later was hired as an editorial assistant for Vogue magazine. She moved to Vanity Fair as a staff writer two years later. In 1917, she met and married a Wall Streetstockbroker, Edwin Pond Parker II. She had ambivalent feelings about her Jewish heritage given the strong anti-semitism of that era and joked that she married “… to escape my name.”

Her career took off while she was writing theatre criticism for Vanity Fair, which she began to do in 1918 as a stand-in for the vacationing P. G. Wodehouse. At the magazine, she met humorist Robert Benchley, who became a close friend, and writer Robert E. Sherwood. The trio began lunching at the Algonquin Hotel on a near-daily basis and became founding members of the Algonquin Round Table. Parker began developing a national reputation as a wit. One of her most famous comments was made when the group was informed that famously taciturn former president Calvin Coolidge had died; Parker remarked, "How could they tell?" One of her acerbic book reviews under the byline "Constant Reader" (in response to the whimsy of A. A. Milne's “The House at Pooh Corner,” she wrote: "Tonstant Weader fwowed up."
Her best-known short-story, "Big Blonde," published in The Bookman magazine, was awarded the O. Henry Award as the best short-story of 1929.
What would become a life-long commitment to activism began in 1927 with the pending executions of Sacco and Vanzetti. Parker travelled to Boston to protest the proceedings. She married Alan Campbell, an actor with aspirations to become a screenwriter. They moved to Hollywood and would eventually earn upwards of $5,000 per week as freelancers for various studios. She and Campbell worked on more than 15 films. Parker co-wrote the script for the 1937 film “A Star is Born,” for which she and fellow writers were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Written Screenplay. She wrote additional dialogue for “The Little Foxes” starring Bette Davis in 1941 and received another Oscar nomination, with cowriter Frank Cavett, for “Smash Up,” starring Susan Hayward.
After the United States entered World War II, Parker and Alexander Woollcott collaborated to produce an anthology of her work for servicemen stationed overseas. The volume compiled over two dozen of Parker's short stories. It was released in the United States in 1944 under the title “The Portable Dorothy Parker.” This book is one of only three of the serviceman’s “Portable” series (the other two being William Shakespeare and The Bible) to remain continuously in print. Parker helped start the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League in 1936 (which was suspected by the FBI of being a Communist Party front). The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League's membership eventually grew to some 4,000 strong. During the McCarthy era, the FBI compiled a 1,000-page dossier on her because of her suspected involvement in Communism. As a result, she was placed on the Hollywood blacklist by the movie studio bosses.
In her later years, Parker would come to denigrate the Algonquin Round Table, the group that brought her such early notoriety. “These were no giants,” she said. “Think who was writing in those days -- Lardner, Fitzgerald, Faulkner and Hemingway. Those were the real giants. The Round Table was just a lot of people telling jokes and telling each other how good they were.
Parker died on June 7, 1967, of a heart attack at the age of 73. In her will, she bequeathed her estate to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following King's death, her estate was passed on to the NAACP. Her executor, author/playwright Lillian Hellman, bitterly but unsuccessfully contested that disposition. Her ashes remained unclaimed in her attorney Paul O'Dwyer's filing cabinet for approximately 17 years. – a sad ending to one of America’s great literary talents. nest for views of the Pacific on clear mornings and a rolloff roof observatory for Erik’s astronomy habit. There is also a separate pool house decorated in a Gilligan’s Island theme. It’s still a work in progress, with Erik continuing to add bits and pieces over the last eight years. Instead of taking out one large construction loan, he took out a few small loans to finance the build and paid for the rest out of pocket as he went. He estimates the cost of the build so far is about 70k. “Nothing’s ever done,” says Erik laughing. “If I didn’t have to work full time, I’d have a lot more time to work on the house.”
His most recent project was a band practice room, for their band Kauz of Affliction. They weren’t sure how their hard edged sound would be received in rural Hawaii, until a neighbor started blasting Metallica every Wednesday before practice time, sounding his approval. Their first album Soultaker, released in 2016, is available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. A second album is in the works. Erik and Justine are busy. In fact, they make me feel kind of lazy. In additon to working on their home, playing music and writing, both work full time in Kailua Kona in the tourism industry. All this work really pays off when you live off grid and don’t have to pay rent or utility
bills. The couple recently returned from a several week trip to South East Asia. Before that, they traveled to Fiji and Kiribati and swam with sharks in French Polynesia. Trust me, I’m friends with them on Facebook and their travel posts tend to inspire a pure, childish envy.
So how exactly do they escape utility bills, you ask? The pair uses a 700 watt solar photovoltaic system for their electricity needs, with 6 solar panels mounted on their roof. They aren’t roughing it either, with a nice flat screen TV, washer and dryer, full size refrigerator and did I mention all the electric guitars, amps and sound equipment that a metal band requires? They use propane gas for cooking and a large rain water catchment tank supplies all their water. Erik built their own septic system after having too many house guests struggle with the simple logic behind a composting toilet. “I can’t imagine paying a power

bill,” says Erik. When I ask him where he learned to build all this stuff, he mutters something about working for his uncle’s roofing company as a teenager and then extolls the virtues of DIY Youtube tutorials. Go figure. It’s what I’d expect from a crazy Ocean
A letter from the Post Office...
We don't know who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US Postal Service. Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month.
The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her.
I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much.
I 'm happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls.
I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey & Meredith, addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it.
Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope cause she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.
A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith,

Recently, I read an article about David Letterman’s retirement. Most of us remember him in his nightly entertainment program. I found his comments about retirement both amusing and tragic. He said he was bored, unhappy, unfulfilled, and didn’t know what to do with himself. He is only seventy. If this is his daily experience, we have to pity him. So much money, time, past fame, and nothing to do. What this really shows us is that retirement, at least for him, is not that golden ring so many aspire to grab, as the merry-go-round of life goes by. In contrast, I minister to many in retirement homes, board and care facilities, private homes, and even
convalescent units and am amazed as to what fulfills the residents. A recent discussion with a senior revealed that she fulfills her life with two daily Bible studies over TV and a chapter a day from the book, A Purpose Driven Life, for motivation and inspiration. She loves bingo, daily walks, and sharing with the other residents her love of life.
As I go through my own stages of life, I find it encouraging to see how others have found the aging process. Whether they are in their sixties or even early hundreds, they find meaning in taking classes in creative writing, gardening, cooking, music, dancing, and much more. Not only are they continuing to grow intellectually, but also socially. Many add to their lives by volunteering their services in tax preparation, meals on wheels, visiting shut-ins, reading to children, yes, and even adults who have lost their eyesight. Much of this meets the emotional and spiritual needs of the lonely and often neglected. Perhaps even more so, it is to accept the challenge of Christ when he said, “Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” With so much to do, who has time to retire?

Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I'm sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. When the Computer Factory opened in 1995 most of our revenue came from building and selling new desk top PCs. The average price of a new computer was around fifteen hundred dollars. Our service revenues were mainly from repairing PCs and fixing Windows problems. The average lifespan of a computer was about two years. They didn’t wear out or break. They simply became obsolete. The technologies driving the design of PCs and the applications were moving so rapidly that there was no market for used PCs. By the time PCs were two years old there was nothing in them worth saving. Hard drives, memory and CPUs doubled in speed and functionality every 18 months.

By 2007 the pace of technology began to slow. Nearly every home had at least one PC. Windows XP was six years old and well established as a popular OS. Everyday stand alone operations like word processing, spreadsheets and presentation graphics were easily handled by existing technology. The Internet was playing an increasing role in consumer user patterns but new PCs couldn’t make the Internet any faster. PC sales slowed as users had no incentive to buy newer PCs. Microsoft tried to give PC sales a boost with the release of a new OS, “Vista,” in late 2007 but “Vista” offered nothing new and was slower than XP so consumers stayed home. Independent PC builders like us enjoyed increased PC sales as we were able to continue selling XP computers while major retailers could sell only “Vista” PCs. Windows7 replaced “Vista” in 2009 and PC sales boomed again for the next two years. By the end of 2011 the majority of users had replaced their old XP and “Vista” PCs with new Windows 7 models and PC sales have declined each year since then. Win 8/8.1 and Win10 failed to reverse that trend as most users

At the Computer Factory we still build some PCs in the $1000 to $2000 range (gamers, servers, designer workstations) but the average cost of our new Windows 7 or 10 PCs is in the $500-$600 range. Since the average six or seven year old PC is perfectly capable of doing what’s needed, on or off the Internet, our emphasis has shifted away from selling as many new PCs and toward maintaining and upgrading existing PCs. For most users it makes little sense to spend $500 on a new PC when the old one can do the job with a $100 to $200 repair or upgrade. Home Fire in Escondido
On April 30th 2017 at approximately 6:10 PM, the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of smoke coming from a home located at 755 E Mission Ave. A structure fire response was dispatched to the location.
The first arriving engine reported a manufactured home with heavy smoke and fire coming from a bedroom of the home. Aggressive action by the firefighters contained and controlled the fire in approximately 10 minutes. The residents were not at home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. In all, four fire engines, two trucks, one rescue ambulance and one Battalion Chief responded to the fire. Six residents were displaced as the fire and smoke damage made the home uninhabitable. The Red Cross was requested to provide accommodations and support to the displaced persons. In addition, the Escondido Fire Department provided financial assistance to the residents through the
