The scream of police sirens, the wonk, wonk, wonk of emergency vehicles, the stench of burning rubber filled the chill November air. For two days the Pakistani military, armed and dressed in riot gear, lined the barricaded streets. News accounts and intelligence briefings warned the American Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan would soon be attacked by as many as 10,000 protestors.

ordered all hands to don combat gear: brown battle fatigues, steel helmets with chin strap, body armor, and ammo belts. The Marines checked their gas mask’s fit and hung tear-gas grenades from their belts, making sure their 12-gauge pump action shot guns were ready to fire, then cleaned their standard -issue .38 caliber Smith and Wesson pistols one more time.
To Marine Corporal Vickie Gaglia and Lance Corporal Betty Jo Rankin, this combat readiness was a tense and unfamiliar action. They had joined Mullis’ detachment only two weeks earlier, the first female Embassy Marines Mullis had ever command-
ed. Wisely, he’d integrated them into the regular work schedule, treating them like any other well-trained Marine.
On 21 November 1979, Mullis posted L/Cpl. Rankin to the consulate’s exposed roof top - a key position if the consulate came under fire. Cpl. Gaglia was to guard the supply and communications center in the basement of the three-story consulate, with orders to radio each Marine within the compound every fifteen minutes for situation reports. That Wednesday morning at 10:22 hours, as expected, the protestors
attacked, discharging smoke cannisters, setting off fireworks, and hurling gasoline -filled bottles that exploded on consulate grounds, spewing sharp shards of glass. Rocks bounced off the building’s walls. Men with battering rams intent on knocking down the facilities’ doors, advanced, screaming. Th,e mob screamed, “Death to Satan America.”
The Pakistani military repelled the first wave. The protestors re-assembled, added reinforcements and returned, led by roaring motorcycles and pickup trucks. A tear-gas grenade

arched up, up, up, fell into a palm tree, then tumbled onto the consulate’s roof. Unless it was quickly extinguished it could set fire to the consulate. Ignoring the hail of rocks hitting around her, L/Cpl. Rankin calmly shoveled the smoldering container onto the grass below where it soon burned itself out. Again, the Pakistani army stopped the protestor’s attack. Not one American in the Karachi raid was injured. The consulate in Rawalpindi and the Embassy in Lahore were also attacked. Tragically at Lahore, Marine Security Guard, Corporal Stephen J. Crowley, was killed. In the inquiry that followed, an investigating officer asked M/Sgt. Mullis to assess how the women Marines responded to combat. He’s quoted as saying, “They exceeded expectations. After all, they are Embassy Marines.” (This was 22 years before the topic of women serving in combat situations was even discussed by the U.S. Congress.) *** Embassy Marines

She emphatically told Frank, (and several others), that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing! Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He simply said nothing.
Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house, walked home... and left it there all night.
There are times when my greatest accomplishment is just keeping my mouth shut.
Russia, and Sana’a, Yemen. They act as couriers, coffee makers, messengers, chauffeurs, guides, and blood donors. They get cats out of trees, ensure the safe handling of classified or sensitive material, even serve as a fourth hand in bridge if needed. Equally important, they provide a reassuring and stabilizing presence for those who visit American embassies or consulates. A tough order to be sure. . The first detachments were assigned to Tangiers, Morocco and Bangkok, Thailand, in 1949. Since then, marines have served in remote African countries (think Chad, Mali, Somalia) and busy Western European cities (Paris, Rome, Oslo) and dangerous war zones: Beirut, Baghdad, Vietnam.
A marine must volunteer for Marine embassy duty and have letters of recommendation from two officers and his or her commanding officer. This requirement deters good marines from embassy duty as command frequently refuses to grant top marines permission to join. To be onsidered, Marines with the rank of sergeant or below must have 39 months of service time remaining and have no more than four immediate dependents, including their spouse. They must be U.S citizens, with no Uniform Code of Military Justice convictions, be financially stable, and possess a minimum General Test Score of 90. They must also pass a vigorous background check and receive Top Secret clearance. Training is intense and lasts for sixty days. According to a 2010 Marine Gazette IRISH ALZHEIMERS
Murphy showed up at Mass one Sunday and the priest almost fell down when he saw him. He'd never been to church in his life. After Mass, the priest caught up with him & said, "Murphy, I am so glad ya decided to come to Mass. What made ya come?"
Murphy said, "I got to be honest with you Father, a while back, I misplaced me hat and I really, really love that hat. I know that McGlynn had a hat just like mine and I knew he came to church every Sunday I also knew that he had to take off his hat during Mass and figured he would leave it in the back of the church. So, I was going to leave after Communion and steal McGlynn's hat."
The priest said, "Well, Murphy, I notice that ya didn't steal McGlynn's hat. What changed your mind?"
Murphy replied, "Well, after I heard your sermon on the 10 Commandments I decided that I didn't need to steal McGlynn's hat after all."
With a tear in his eye the priest gave Murphy a big smile and said; "After I talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' ya decided you would rather do without your hat than burn in hell, eh?"
Murphy slowly shook his head. "No, Father, after ya talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery' I remembered where I left me hat."

Zero tolerance means just that when it comes to marijuana and drug use for Embassy Marine candidates. Failed drug tests are the major reason marines do not complete the selection process. The second obstacle reason is the inability to obtain a Top -Secret clearance. The third is the much-dreaded personal interviews. Conducted by Marine officers, these are intrusive and raw, often awakening psychological hurts and mental scars that may cause depression or otherwise deter a Marine’s ability to cope or make rational decisions under stress.
A recent day’s training schedule at Marine Security Guard School in Quantico, Virginia, started at 0530 (five thirty in the morning, civilian time), with group exercise and a 5mile run. Classes on American State Department history, personal etiquette, and hygiene were followed by a demonstration of proper table manners. A refresher class on the American Constitution dominated the afternoon. The day ended at 1900 (7 p.m.), with a lecture on voting laws followed by a 30-minute jog. The goal, according to former Marine Commandant Peter Pace, is to produce “quality men and women who exceed Marine Corps personal appearance standards, display exemplary self-discipline, possess above average communication skills and own the ability to execute orders with integrity and thoroughness, often under trying circumstances, yet per-

As the sun rose 31 April 1975, eleven Marines crouched on the flat roof of the American Embassy in Saigon, Vietnam, nervously fingering their M-16 rifles, fearful they’d been forgotten by their command. They had no ship-to-shore radio. No telegraph. No fax. No phone lines. No way to communicate their situation to the US Navy ships and South Vietnamese flotilla laying off the coast.
Colin Broussard, one of the Embassy Marines on the roof that day, said in a 2005 Chicago Tribune interview, “When Tan Son Nhut Airport was heavily bombed the day before, we knew fixed-wing operations were done.” If the marines were to be rescued, it had to be by helicopter. As they waited, shots rang out from time to time from below, where thousands of South Vietnamese crowded onto the embassy grounds. The more desperate, clambered up the lower floors of the six-floor embassy, breathing noxious tear-gas fumes, hoping somehow to find a ride to freedom.

touched down, the marines piled on. Gunnery Sergeant John J. Valdez of Oceanside, California, the detachment’s N.C., O. I.C., carried the embassy flag in a brown -bag. The last to climb aboard, he calmly counted heads, then confident all his marines were aboard, gave the ‘Go Sign’ and the last helicopter out of Saigon lifted off, part of the largest helicopter evacuation in history: 1,373 Americans and 5,595 Vietnamese were flown to safety in some 19 hours. When Gunny Valdez arrived aboard the command ship, USS Blue Ridge, he presented the neatly folded flag to American Ambassador Graham Martin. “Embassy secure, sir,” Valdez said, rendering a hand salute.
America’s war effort in Vietnam officially ended at that moment.
Of the 56,554 Americans killed in Vietnam, the last two warriors to pay the ultimate sacrifice were Embassy Marines: Corporal Charles McMahan and Lance Corporal Darwin Judge. Their bodies were recovered 30 April, the day before that final helicopter flight. ***

Marines returned state-side to find their careers derailed; deserved promotions denied because their detachment’s billets (positions), were all foreclosed. Deserving marines fell behind not for lack of merit, but because their unit had no need for higher ranks. This discrepancy was somewhat resolved when the Marine Corps began awarding promotion points for time served at embassies in late 1978. Also, meritorious promotions became more prevalent. Another applauded policy change, concerned time served at one embassy. In the past, an entire tour might be spent at a ‘hardship’ station, such as in the tension-filled Middle East. New regulations were adopted so that after 12 months duty at such a station, marines would be rotated to a ‘good’ post often in a NATO country.
A major morale-booster came when Secretary of Navy, John Dalton established an Embassy Marine duty ribbon on 15 July 1997. Retroactive to 1949, this decoration can be worn only by those who have served at a foreign detachment associated with the State Department. Another improvement established extra pay of $110.00 a month; a more generous clothing allowance for the purchase of civilian attire was included in this time regulation, as was a wardrobe issue expansion of 6 extra blues trousers and 2 complete summer and winter uniforms. A few days into January 1961 at the U.S. Embassy in, Havana, Cuba, three marines were tasked with the sad duty of lowering and retiring the American flag. The non-commissioned officer in charge asked for “the ugliest, meanest looking Marines I have,” recalled retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Jim Tracy, then a sergeant.
He and two other marines, Lance Corporal Larry C. Morris and thenCorporal Francis ‘Mike’ East, marched out in front of probably 300 Cubans - who hoped to obtain lastminute exit visas, to escape Fidel Castro’s Communists, - lowered the flag, folded it neatly, and presented it to a U.S. State Department representative.
On Friday, 14 August 2015, these same three marines, now in their 70s, were guests of Secretary of State John F. Kerry and took part in the flag ceremony at the American Embassy, Havana, Cuba.
Secretary Kerry said, “Fifty-four years ago, you men promised to return and hoist the flag of the United States over the American Embassy again. Today, the flag you lowered that January day so long ago, will once again fly over our embassy.” The secretary handed the flag to Tracy, the ranking marine in the group. “Today, I invite you on behalf of President Obama and the American people to fulfill your pledge by presenting the Stars and Stripes to be raised by our current Marine detachment.”

On a cold December day in 1959, I reported to Marine Security Guard School, Henderson Hall, Washington, D.C. I was nineteen, two years out of high school. There were 122 other marines already in quarters awaiting the start of training. My bunk mate discoursed on super magnification as I un-packed. “The smaller the particle, the easier to transport,” he said. “That’s how we’ll transport people. Shrink ‘em.”
Another marine burned polish off his shoes with lighter fluid, then re-dyed and polished them to a level of luster I’d never seen before.

The Paper • Page 4 • April 19, 2018 The Warrant Scam is back. Be aware of someone calling and pretending to be a San Diego County Sheriff's Department employee asking you for money in the form of gift cards. IT IS A SCAM.
In recent days, we have received several calls from the public inquiring about these suspicious telephone calls. Your best response to this scam call is to HANG UP THE PHONE! No amount of discussion with the scammer will be worth your effort and you may actually give them information which could be used to separate you from your money! The Phone Call: To sound believable, scammers will use a real Sheriff's employee's name or Sheriff's Department telephone number which can be found online. They will also use Caller ID "spoofing," which makes it appear as though the call is coming from a Sheriff's Station, Substation, facilities or court offices. They may also ask you to deliver the money to Sheriff's Headquarters at 9621 Ridgehaven Court in San Diego. The Scare Tactic: The caller will try to intimidate you and as a scare tactic will say: "You have a warrant out for your arrest. Pay up or you will end up in jail!" The Hook: These scams play on your fears. You want to be a law abiding citizen and don't want to end up in jail. In a panic, you end up giving personal
information or money to defuse the situation.
RED FLAG: Phone + Money = Scam. If you receive a phone call and someone is asking for money, STOP! IT IS A SCAM. FACT: No employee of the Sheriff's Department will ever contact members of the public by telephone to demand money or any other form of payment. If you get this type of call, HANG UP IMMEDIATELY.
FACT: Outstanding warrants cannot be resolved over the phone. Warrants can only be cleared through the court. People with outstanding warrants are encouraged to turn them-
selves in Monday through Friday during business hours at any one of the Sheriff's Court Facilities.

I was rather dissapointed but not shocked at the 4.1 no vote on the Sanctuary City fiasco. From Olga Diaz, this is not surprising. This is how people like Olga gain power, by stirring up the masses as we know Escondido is heavily populated with Latinos. This is where the advantage is taken.

Kiwanis Trout Derby
This will be the 21st year the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club of Escondido sponsors the annual trout derby at Dixon Lake in Escondido.
It is their major fundraiser and each year it seems to draw more and more financial support from area businesses and professional people.
And, word has gotten out that the fishin is mighty good and there’s lots to do and all kinds of goodies that you just might wind up winning.
The highlight of the derby, however, is the little tykes who fish at the Kiddie Fishing Pond. The Kiwanis Club has set up a floating net on one of the docks that contains hundreds of hungry trout.
The Kiddie Pond is open from 9 to 11 am and again from 1 to 3pm on both
Poles and bait are provided, guidance and assistance as well. The reward comes for the child when she or he catches that trout; the reward for mom and dad and the grandparents, comes when they see the sparkle in the kids’ eyes . . . the laughter and thrill they bring to the party.
Kiwanians will have cameras at the entrance to the dock and will record for posterity that great big trout and that great big grin and wide eyed look of astonishment that they caught their first trout!

Any member of the Kiwanis club will tell you this is their favorite part of the derby . . . seeing the little ones enjoying life so much . . . and, perhaps, beginning to follow a life long sport to share with family and friends. Gates open at 6am on both Saturday and Sunday, April 21st and 22nd, and runs till 6pm Saturday and 4pm Sunday, respectively. At 4pm Sunday the winning anglers will be announced for largest trout on Saturday in both adult and junior age levels; prizes will go to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There are also 15 tagged fish with guaranteed prizes of $25 for each one caught. In addition, many Opportunity Prizes are awarded to lucky participants. No California Fishing License is required; fishing permits are. Adult permits are $14, $10 for both junior and senior permits. A limited number of boats are available for rent from
It came to be my duty to head over to Evelyn's to assist her. The physical therapist said she could now shower - one week after her hip replacement surgery. She could shower by herself but was unable to bend down to wash her feet . . . or to put on her underwear and/or shorts/slacks. That would be my job. I helped her into the shower and then left her while I played with the pups. After she finished her shower she would call me and I would happily wash her feet and assist her in any other way I could. All went well.
While she finished getting dressed I took the pups outside to play in our fenced yard. They scooted around the yard, sniffing here and there, and were at peace. in Central California, I’d received a Top- Secret clearance, which removed a major reason for flunking the selection policy.
Still, I worried about my personal interviews. How would an orphan boy from a small mid-western town stack up? Was I doomed before I started?
The first question asked me at my first interview was, “Your sister raised you. She turn tricks to get the money?” I answered clearly. “Not that I know of, sir. She worked as a seamstress.” “Our paper work says you have eleven siblings. Why so many kids?” “Cold winter nights, sir.” ***
I passed, but the following Monday only eighty-seven marines answered roll call. Twenty more would be scrubbed the next few weeks. Two days after my second interview, my duty station was announced: Monrovia, Liberia. I knew about that African country from high school. Established by freed American slaves, its capitol was named for American President James Monroe. It had an elected House of Representatives and Senate, a written Constitution, and used the American monetary system. It was one of the first countries our government
pledged to support, then reneged on this promise once the crisis was ended.
While awaiting orders, I was assigned to Casual Company. Six or eight times a day, five days a week., along with five other marines and a Marine Band bugler, we’d pile into a gray Navy van and jolt off to be Honor Guards for funerals of deceased military personnel, shooting blanks and presenting arms during Taps, then giving a folded American flag to the next of kin. For recreation, I hooked onto a baseball team that played weekends.
One Saturday in June, 1960** (what year?),, Military Policewoman Corporal Mavis Younger, came onto the field and handed me a manila envelope. “You must be in deep trouble,” she said. “My orders are to deliver you to the D.C. train station within four hours. Let’s go.” Why all the cloak and dagger subterfuge, I’ll never know. The envelope contained orders to Tehran, Iran, a country I knew nothing about except it was in the Middle East, with scads of oil. Good bye, Liberia. *** Iran, Here I Am Assigned to Tehran, Iran

*** Thanks to Military Air Transport Service (MATS), I’d arrived with three other marines the night before. Master Sergeant Canter, the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, ramrodded a 16-person detachment responsible for security at five facilities: The Embassy, United States Information Services, Point Four, the Joint Military Attaché Office, and the American Consulate.
My ride from Mehrabad International Airport to the Embassy opened my country- boy eyes. On the jammed streets, horse- drawn carts jockeyed with fancy Jaguars; vendors selling cameras and French cigarettes, Colgate tooth paste, Butterfinger candy bars, newspapers, street maps and hundreds of other items, challenged high-rise department stores. A jube -— an open ditch with water from melting snow in the Alborz Mountains -— ran down most streets, a handy place to wash donkeys, clothes, and vegetables, often at the same time. I found the Iranian people friendly and curious about Americans. The Shah was still in power, so society was more Westernized than it is today. spent overseeing the mess facilities. We had two cooks and served meals at five different times daily due to staggered work hours. There were also uniforms to iron and shoes to polish and some semblance of a physical fitness program to maintain. By October 1962, detachment personnel in Tehran had turned over three times, but my replacement had been delayed. Again.
In the meantime, I’d been TAD— Temporary Assigned Duty—to Beirut and the Belgian Congo, but it had been 42 months since my last leave. I was serving Convenience of Government - since my enlistment had ended in was March. That morning I’d changed rooms because the marine in the room next to mine was quarantined with hepatitis. I’d also helped with the classified material burn and donated blood to an Embassy Officer’s wife. In full blues, I greeted a woman as she entered the embassy. She appeared distraught. “I’m an American tax payer from Washington, D.C. You speak English?”
“Yes, ma’am. I’m an American Marine,”
She looked at me like I was a street urchin peeking through a candy store window. “We have marines in my country, too,” she said. I smiled, listened to her problem, and showed her to the appropriate office. Her problem solved, I escorted her to the foyer, thanking her for the visit.
She tapped me on the chest. “You want to see some real Marines? Come to America.” I smiled. “That’s a great suggestion. I hope to take you up on that soon.” I meant every word I said.

plant and patches of dirt . . . and the slope of which is about a 45 degree angle.
Dumb ol' me . . . felt an overwhelming compulsion to begin harvesting that tree of those lovely looking oranges. But I held back . . . dumb ol' me was no longer young ol' me . . . I'm in my late middle earlies and I had reservations about going up that 45 degree bank to reach the orange tree. I have been known to fall in my latter years . . . and to break a shoulder. Didn't want to go through that again. But, still . . . those oranges sure looked mighty good. I remembered how sweet and juicy they were from last year. Dumb ol' me went into the garage, retrieved two plastic grocery bags and committed myself to climbing that 45 degree bank, reaching the tree, harvesting the oranges and then feasting upon same.
Dumb ol' me cautiously began my climb . . . in fairly short order I had reached the tree and, with a big silly grin, began to harvest the oranges. I guess I got about a dozen before the bag was filled.
Now dumb ol' me had to decide how I was gonna get back down that 45 degree angle bank. It would be much more difficult to get down the slope than it was getting up. Very, very slowly I edged myself, foot by foot, downward . . . occasionally sliding a bit . . . occasionally beginning to lose some balance . . . and often wondering, "what in the hell did I get myself into this time?" Eventually, I made it to the bottom. Safely. Dumb ol' me had not fallen. Dumb ol' me actually survived.
I parceled out half the oranges for Evelyn, half for me (after all it was ME who risked life and limb to retrieve them!) I ate one immediately and, indeed, it was like nectar of the Gods. Just as I suspected. Sweet, juicy, lovely pulp. Evelyn emerged, all freshened up from her shower (she doesn't like showers; prefers a bath; but the hip replacement doctors say "not yet.") We chatted a bit, played with the pups, and then I went on my way to take care of other typical Sunday business.
Which included the consumption of several more fresh oranges.
Such are the exciting times on a Sunday morning in California.

Does the color of your car project a message to others? Experts say it does in some cases. I often thought it did.
On many occasions when I was preparing to go on a buying trip, my wife would ask, ”What are you looking for today?” My stock answer many times was “A red one.” I nicknamed it “Retail Red,” because it not only sold, but it increased our customer traffic on the balance of our inventory, of which the majority were conservative colors.
Let’s go thru the list of colors and the story each tells. What you are telling others by the color car you drive? Red, you’re assertive or aggressive and strong, plus easy to pick out by the cops. Silver, you ooze with class. It represents power and success, a favorite color for baby boomers, age 38-56. White is always at the top of the list or close to it. People under 65 who like to blend in choose it, also the elderly because it harks back to elegance and wealth of bygone days. Blue, is for the usually conservative middle of the road owner, but it always hangs in the middle. Green, denotes a touch of environmentalism. Light Tan (champagne), is an in color that says, “I’m easy maintenance “ and also easy to lose in the parking lot. Orange, comes out of nowhere to become a trendy fashion statement in lots of shades. Yellow, really screams,”Look at me”. It’s a sexy color, but not for the family sedan. It’s for expensive sport cars. If it could talk it would say, “I’m so rich and I don’t care what you think”. In the right shade it’s a dynamite color. Many shades could represent bad taste. Pink, here comes Mary K! Black, power, aggression sums it up. It’s a color for the 24 to37 crowd. It’s a color targeted by thieves along with red.
Holocaust Remembrance Day
I am honored to recognize Bernard `Bernie’ Zelkowitz, a Temecula resident and a actual survivor of the Holocaust, at this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day in the State Capitol. Born in Vishk, Czechoslovakia, in 1925, he was forced into a ghetto at age 17 by the Nazi's. He was crammed into a two-bedroom house shared by seven families. At age 18, he was ordered onto a train for four days until he and his family arrived at their destination – Auschwitz concentration camp, Poland. Separated from his family, he was later transferred to another camp, where he was liberated by the allies on April 15, 1945. He lost 56 relatives, including his parents. Only two brothers survived. Bernard, now age 92, has made his home in the United State since 1960, finally settling in Temecula in my Assembly District.
Holocaust Remembrance Day is much more than a ceremony to recognize survivors of history’s most horrific genocidal act – its message is the prevention of future atrocities. Keeping these memories alive is just one goal of the Legislative Jewish Caucus, which is dedicated to being a voice for justice and
equality, and to serve as a resource for the concerns of California’s Jewish community.
Unfortunately however, our collective memory of these events may be fading. A recent survey shows that 31% of all Americans and 41% of millennials believe that substantially less than 6 million Jews were killed – and 49% of millennials cannot name a single concentration camp. Even so, over 90% of Americans believe students should be taught more about the Holocaust, and 80% believe this knowledge will help prevent new atrocities.
We must learn history to understand and remember. That is the true meaning of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Illegal immigration is what it is. ILLEGAL. Many years ago when I immigrated to this great country, stamped on my green card was Legal Alien. How would she like that one? I have no personel qualms with Olga I think she is a good person and does a good job I read her weely articles with interest. However, as we all know, the immigration issue in this country is a sad story and the blame can only go to Washington. The nasty bigotry remarks to Olga in the last article was uncalled for and she should not take this to heart. Edison: The Wizard of Menlo Park
The last of our six industrial giants who helped build America was inventor Thomas Alva Edison. He gave us the electric light, the motion picture camera, sound recordings, electric car batteries and so much more. Despite Henry Ford’s leadership in the auto industry, today, Edison’s many inventions touch every American more than anyone else. Each time you turn on a light, watch a movie, take a photo, play recorded music, slip some batteries into a flashlight and make a telephone call, they’re all because of Edison inventions and/or developments.
Thomas Alva Edison, born Feb. 11, 1847, has been described as America's greatest inventor. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park” is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory. Edison was a prolific inventor, holding 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. To power his lights, Edison developed a system of electric-power generation and distribution to homes, businesses, and factories – a crucial development in the modern industrialized world. His first power station was on Pearl Street in New York’s Manhattan Island. Edison began his career as an inventor in Newark, N.J,, with the automatic repeater and his other improved telegraphic devices, but the invention that first gained him wider notice was the phonograph in 1877.
Nearly all of Edison's patents were for utilities, which were protected for a 17year period and included inventions or processes that are electrical, mechanical, or chemical in nature. In just over a decade, Edison's Menlo Park laboratory had expanded to occupy two city blocks. In 1876, Edison began work to improve the microphone for telephones by developing a carbon microphone, which consists of two metal plates separated by granules of carbon that would change resistance with the pressure of sound waves. This type was put in use in 1890 and was used in all telephones along with the Bell receiver until the 1980s.
In 1878, Edison began working on a system of electrical illumination,
something he hoped could compete with gas and oil-based lighting. The first successful test was on Oct. 22, 1879; the lamp’s filament lasted 13.5 hours. Edison continued to improve this design and on Nov. 4, 1879, filed for U.S. patent for an electric lamp using "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires.” This was the first commercially practical incandescent light.
In 1878, Edison formed the Edison Electric Light Company in New York City with several financiers, including J. P. Morgan and the members of the Vanderbilt family. He said: "We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles." The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company's new steamship, the Columbia, was the first commercial application for Edison's incandescent light bulb in 1880. After devising a commercially viable electric light bulb on Oct. 21, 1879, Edison developed an electric "utility" to compete with the existing gas light utilities. On Dec. 17, 1880, he founded the Edison Illuminating Company, and during the 1880s, he patented a system for electricity distribution.
As Edison expanded his direct current (DC) power delivery system, he received stiff competition from companies installing Nicola Tesla’s alternating current (AC) systems. From the early 1880s AC arc lighting systems for streets and large spaces had been an expanding business in the U.S. With the development of transformers in Europe and by Westinghouse Electric in the US in 1885-1886, it became possible to transmit AC long distances over thinner and cheaper wires, and "step down" the voltage at the destination for distribution to users. Edison is credited with designing and producing the first commercially available fluoroscope, a machine that uses X-rays to take radiographs. The fundamental design of Edison's fluoroscope is still in use today.
Edison also was granted a patent for the motion picture camera or "Kinetograph.” In 1891, Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope or peephole viewer. This device was installed in penny arcades, where people could watch short, simple films. The kinetograph and kinetoscope were both first publicly exhibited May 20, 1891. Edison's film studio made close to 1,200 films. The majority of the productions were short films showing everything from acrobats to parades to fire calls including titles such as The Kiss (1896), The Great Train Robbery (1903), and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1910). The Edison Storage Battery Company was founded in 1901. With this company Edison exploited his invention of the “accumulator.” Not until 1910 Edison showed a mature product: A NickelIron-Battery with Lye as liquid.
Edison died of complications of diabetes on Oct. 18, 1931, at his home in Llewellyn Park, N.J. Edison is buried behind the home.
Of all the innovators, Edison’s inventions continues to have the greatest impact around the world touching every aspect of our lives.

BILLY GRAHAM TOUCHED MY LIFE
It’s been a couple weeks since the passing of Billy Graham. That event touched me more than I thought it would…and caused me to reflect back. I remember vividly every Sunday when I visited my grandmother’s after church as a small child, after lunch - we’d all gather around the radio and listen to the “Hour of Decision” with Billy Graham. I could see the tears in the eyes of everyone listened intently and heard him proclaim “Come to Christ” in his resonating voice. I’m glad I was in that circle. Later on, when we finally got a television, I still remember watching, for the first time, a “crusade” with Dr. Graham. The amazing crowd,
Having never been to a Billy Graham crusade, and by now living in San Diego, Bill Graham came to do what would turn out to be one of his final crusades in 2003. I had to go. We not only got to hear him (I remember he was seated during his sermon), but also had the privilege of being a counselor at the crusade. I am glad I did it. Having observed his life, heard his messages, seen his integrity, witnessed his love for Ruth, and seeing the legacy he left behind… I’m a better person for it. Thank you God for Billy Graham. Our generation may not live to see another evangelist like him. I am happy to have known his story!
Billy, I’ll see you on the other side... PS – The music changed a lot through the years - from the late fifties and early sixties when we gathered around the radio to his crusades in the 2000’s and the Friday night “youth nights” toward the end. I heard Billy say once, when asked what he thought of the “modern” music at that Friday night event, “after that… I get to PREACH”. Gotta love him.

Moments later, the woman's husband Keith came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, "Hi Keith. •••• A buddy of mine just told me he's getting it on with his girlfriend and her twin. I asked, "How can you tell them apart?" He said, "Her brother's got a moustache". •••• When I checked into my hotel on a recent trip, I said to the lady at the registration desk, "I hope the porn channel in my room is disabled. "To which she replied, "No, it's regular porn, you sick bastard.” •••• Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam.
The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk. The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard
put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote:
1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed.
And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote:

Lawyers don't lie . . .
A lawyer had a wife and 12 children and needed to move as his rental agreement was coming to an end for the home where he lived but was having difficulty in finding a new home. When he said he had 12 children, no one would rent a Home to him because they knew that the children would destroy the home.
He could not say that he had no children, he could not lie, after all, lawyers cannot and do not lie. So, he had an idea: he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with 11 of their children.
He took the remaining one with him to see homes with a real estate agent. He liked one of the homes and the agent asked: "How many children do you have? He answered: "12 children.

Kent Ballard was a friend, a gifted writer and a frequent feature contributor for The Paper. Some of his articles like “Last Flight” and “Blind Curve” were classics. There was a lovable quirkiness about Kent. He never met a conspiracy theory he didn’t like, was a leader in the movement to find Bigfoot, highly distrustful of Governments and protective of his privacy to the point of paranoia. Here’s to You, the Volunteers! – Next week is Volunteer Appreciation Week at the San Diego Humane Society, and as we celebrate all of our dedicated, selfless volunteers this week, I’m reminded of all the ways our entire community comes together to protect animals and support the mission of the Humane Society. Whether you contribute your time and talents through volunteering, or are an Adoption Partner transferring animals to give them a better chance at finding a home, or simply through adopting a pet, everyone plays a role in inspiring compassion throughout our region. This year, we’re on the brink of increasing the number of animals we help,

Kent died suddenly last summer only a couple of weeks after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Kent went to his maker believing that the Government had taken him out for resisting the probing eye of the “deep State.” A few weeks before his death Kent and I had the following Email conversation. I started it with a tongue in cheek post chiding Kent for his efforts to hide from the cyber snoops.

These processes take place at the Registrar of Voters office in every county beginning on or about May 9 through July 5. Please give a few hours before Election Day and again Between Election Dau and when the election is certified. What a difference we can make – a small sacrifice for a BIG payoff. Training for this effort will be conducted by computer connection from your own home. The training session takes about one hour. Trainings will be conducted every Monday night from May 14 through June 18. Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Announces 2018 Grants – The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation (RBCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, announced its annual call for grant applications. In its 30th year of grant-making, RBCF invites nonprofit organizations and agencies to submit proposals that address the health and well-being of individuals and families in Rancho Bernardo, as well as proposals that support music or musical programs in the community. The goal of the grant cycle is to support programs that make Rancho Bernardo a great place to live, work and play. Preference will be given to projects that clearly address Rancho Bernardo-specific needs; including activities that promote creativity and enhance civic engagement. To achieve the greatest impact, RBCF will prioritize programs that involve collaborative efforts, specifically those bringing together a variety of stakeholders. Additionally,
projects should be practical, achievable within a 12-month time frame, and have prospects for long-term sustainability. Grant guidelines for health and well-being programs and guidelines for music programs are available. The deadline for application submission is Monday, May 14, at 1:00pm.
